Abstract

Multidimensional torus networking topology has become widespread recently in the domain of high-performance computers, clusters, and grids, as well as in the domain of networks on chip. Torus represents an ideal communication structure with the shortest distance and multitude of alternative shortest paths between a pair of nodes. We study simple and powerful local packet forwarding (switching) rules that provide packet delivery with quasi-optimal load balancing and do not use tables of addresses (routes). Implementation of these rules in the form of micro-program code within switching nodes increases considerably network performance, security, and QoS. We use infinite Petri nets and reenterable models in the form of colored Petri nets for prototyping the multi-dimensional torus interconnect simulator to study and compare the packet forwarding rules. Then, an ad-hoc simulator of torus interconnect ts is implemented in the C language to provide high performance and the possibility of simulation over prolonged intervals of time. The simulation results acknowledge the advantages of local packet forwarding rules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Methods for representing and processing algorithms for dynamically adaptive locally refined meshes are proposed for serial and parallel computing systems, including hybrid ones. Estimates of the complexity of the algorithms are given. New parallel algorithms for the decomposition of locally condensed meshes and dynamic load balancing, which ensure low overhead costs and reduce the overall computation time for two- and three-dimensional numerical modeling, are proposed. This paper analyzes the factors influencing the selection of supercomputing resources. Using the results of a survey targeting supercomputing resources in the public sector, a resource selection model was presented through logistic regression and principal component analysis methods. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that affiliation, purpose of use, size of research funding, possession of a supercomputer, and whether specialized services are needed have a significant impact on resource selection. Abstract

In short, the current status of the HPC ecosystem in Bulgaria includes diverse modern hardware (including two supercomputers from the TOP500 list – Discoverer and HEMUS, as well as multiple HPC clusters), and extensive expertise in HPC and the adjacent fields. The competencies and expertise were acquired during a multitude of successful EU projects, as well as leadership and participation in high-profile national programmes and projects with industry/SMEs. Experience in negotiating and managing contracts with different sources of funding and for the use of both equipment and expertise has been gathered. In this paper, we discuss the new developments in the HPC Ecosystem, supported by the acquisition of the HEMUS supercomputer in 2023, as well as our design choices and optimization approaches.

Abstract

What is a supercomputer and why is it needed? What place does it occupy among computing equipment? Thanks to this article, we will determine the evolution and role of the supercomputer in the modern world and in the life of an average citizen. A supercomputer is a class of the most powerful computer systems available, which are evaluated in comparison with currently existing general purpose computer systems and the level of technology development. In general, the term "supercomputer" refers to a complex of server computers. All of them are connected to each other and work in parallel through a high-speed network. The similarity of a home computer and a supercomputer lies in their functions – data storage and processing, belonging to the same von Neumann architecture (the architecture of computing machines, the feature of which is the joint storage of data and machine commands in cells of the same memory). But the difference is huge in quantitative characteristics: these are the arrays of data that can be processed on these devices and the speed of performing the assigned tasks. By the way, a new unit of measurement – FLOPS – was proposed for measuring the speed of supercomputers. It is thanks to this value that performance is measured - the higher the number, the more powerful the computer is and which serves as the basis for ranking supercomputers. Today, supercomputers help solve a number of tasks in various fields – medicine, physics, mathematics, energy, etc. and are considered advanced computing technology. Traditionally, supercomputers are not considered rare: their development is ongoing and they bring a lot of benefits in many areas. In the future, powerful computing machines can become the main assistants in fields closely related to machine learning and artificial intelligence.
