Background: Climate and livestock grazing are key agents in determining current Mongolian steppe vegetation communities. Together with plant coverage or biomass, palatability of steppe community is regarded as a useful indicator of grassland degradation, in particular, at grazing hotspots in arid and semi-arid grasslands. This study analyzed relationships between livestock grazing pressure and steppe vegetation palatability at three summer pastures with different aridity (dry, xeric, and mesic) and livestock numbers (1,100, 1,800, and 4,100 sheep units, respectively). At each site, it was surveyed coverage, biomass, and species composition of different palatability groups (i.e., palatable [P], impalatable [IP], and trampling-tolerant [TT]) along a 1-km transect from grazing hotspots (i.e., well) in every July from 2015 to 2018. Results: In results, total vegetation coverage increased with wetness, 7 times greater at mesic site than dry one in averages (33.1% vs. 4.5%); biomass was 3 times higher (47.1 g m-2 vs. 15.7 g m-2). Though P was the dominant palatability group, the importance of IP in total coverage increased with aridity from mesic (0.6%) to dry (40.2%) sites. Whereas, TT increased with livestock numbers across sites. Locally, IP was observed more frequently near the wells and its spatial range of occurrence becomes farther along the transects with aridity across sites from mesic (< 100 m) to dry (< 700 m from the well). Conclusions: Our results showed that the importance of IP and its spatial distribution are different at both local and regional scales, indicating that the palatability parameters are sensitive to discern balance between selective-grazing demand and climate-driven foraging supply in Mongolian rangelands.

In Turkey, according to Pasture Law, land allocated for farmers to spend the summer with their animals, graze their animals and benefit from grass is defined as “summer pasture (yaylak in Turkish).” Summer pasture is of national importance for its biodiversity, landscape, cultural heritage and transhumance. However, especially after 1990s, the summer pasture areas have been extensively used in tourism activities in Turkey. By changing land use, the increasing tourism activities combined with legal uncertainties and the legalization policies have caused summer pasture areas transferred into built-up areas. The effect of the tourism and legalization policies on the land use changes in summer pasture areas was evaluated in this study. It was determined that Turkey's tourism and legalization policies have adverse effect on sustainable use of summer pasture areas. These policies aimed at economic development and solving property problems of rural areas caused new legal problems and expansion of built-up areas. A better land use policy and an effective control mechanism are necessary for the sustainable use of summer pasture areas. © 2022, Murat Yakar. All rights reserved.

Les vestiges sont cette pratique sont la plupart du temps fugaces ; arfefacts, saisissables par l’approche archéologique, et écofacts, perceptibles par l’approche environnementale, permettent d’émettre des hypothèses sur les transformations de cette occupation de l’espace et parfois, sur des types d’élevage et l’organisation sociale sous-jacente.

International audience; This article describes the evolution of Kazakh techniques of animal husbandry from the nomadic pastoralism practised in the 19th century, through Soviet rationalisation and professionalisation, to the crisis of this sector due to decollectivisation and to its recover in the 21st century. Two field studies carried out between 1994 and 2013 in two Kazakh auls, a sedentary village and a nomadic summer camp, show on a micro scale how ways of acting on and with livestock, especially sheep, reflect a transformation of the relationship with nature : loosening of the control over animal reproduction and mobility, decline of zootechnic interventionism, in favour of more opportunistic forms of actions, but without returning to the previous versatility of species uses or to a more extensive system. If pastoralism can be a model of sustainable exploitation of the steppes, Kazakh pastoralists practise it not for ecological reasons, but to maintain the essential relationship between livestock and people.‪; L’évolution des techniques kazakhes d’élevage est décrite depuis le pastoralisme nomade du XIXe siècle, en passant par la rationalisation et la professionnalisation soviétiques, jusqu’à la crise du secteur, liée à la décollectivisation, et sa reprise au XXIe siècle. Deux études de terrain menées entre 1994 et 2013 dans deux aouls, un village sédentaire et une estive nomade, montrent au niveau micro dans quelle mesure les manières d’agir sur et avec le bétail, notamment ovin, traduisent une transformation du rapport à la nature : relâchement du contrôle sur la reproduction et la mobilité animales, recul de l’interventionnisme zootechnique en faveur d’actions plus opportunistes, mais sans retour à la polyvalence des espèces ni regain d’extensivité. Si le pastoralisme est un modèle d’exploitation durable des steppes, les éleveurs kazakhs le pratiquent non par souci écologique, mais pour entretenir la relation essentielle entre bêtes et gens.

This paper aimed at evaluating the effect of summer transhumance to mountain pastures of dairy cows of different breeds on cheese-making ability of milk. Data were from 649 dairy cows of specialized (Holstein Friesian and Brown Swiss) dual purpose (Simmental) and local (mostly Rendena and Alpine Grey) breeds. The Fourier-Transform Infra-Red Spectra (FTIRS) of their milk samples were collected before and after transhumance in 109 permanent dairy farms, and during transhumance in 14 summer farms (with multi-breeds herds) of the Trento Province, north-eastern Italy. A variety of 18 traits describing milk coagulation, curd firming, cheese yield and nutrients recovery in curd/loss in whey were predicted on the basis of FTIRS collected at the individual cow level. Moving the cows to summer farms improved curd firming traits but reduced cheese yields because of an increase of water and fat lost in the whey. During summer grazing, most of cheese-making traits improved, often non-linearly. The milk from summer farms supplementing cows with more concentrates showed better curd firming and cheese yield, because of lower fat lost in the whey. The breed of cows affected almost all the traits with a worst cheese-making ability for milk samples of Holsteins through all the trial, and interacted with concentrate supplementation because increasing compound feed tended to improve cheese-making traits for all breed, with the exception of local breeds for coagulation time and of Brown Swiss for curd firming time. In general, summer transhumance caused a favourable effect on cheese-making aptitude of milk, even though with some difference according to parity, initial days in milk, breed and concentrate supplementation of cows.

Alpine pastures, or mountain summer pastures can be defined as permanent grasslands used in summer by mountain and surrounding plains farmers (especially Provence in the French Alps). They are rich but fragile ecosystems, managed exclusively through the grazing of herds. Therefore adaptation to climate change is very specific on these spaces. Pastoral diagnosis methods and technical references are insufficient to analyse dynamic management of summer mountain pastures: static vision of vegetation and practices, climatic hazards considered only through a security coefficient, and no consideration for interactions between summer pastures and farms. In order to renew these analytical frameworks, our PhD thesis proposes a conceptual model of how the system “mountain summer pastures-farm” works, both in biophysical terms and in terms of management. The building of this model relies both on researches in ecology and agronomy, and on participatory modelling. We evaluate the model through an analysis of the vulnerability to climatic hazards of a diversified sample of systems. In order to take into account long term dynamics of climate change, we also mobilise the theories of social-ecological resilience.; Les alpages sont des espaces utilisés par la majorité des exploitations d’élevage de montagne et de Provence, qui y envoient tout ou partie de leurs troupeaux durant la saison estivale. Ce sont des milieux très riches sur le plan environnemental, mais aussi très fragiles et gérés exclusivement par le pâturage des troupeaux, constituant de ce fait des espaces particuliers dans la problématique de l’adaptation au changement climatique pour les systèmes d’élevage provençaux et de montagne. Or le constat est fait que les approches de diagnostic d’alpage et les références utilisées au plan pastoral présentent des lacunes pour appréhender la gestion dynamique des alpages : vision statique des végétations d’alpage et des pratiques, prise en compte des aléas et de la variabilité interannuelle souvent réduite à un coefficient forfaitaire de sécurité... et pas de prise en considération des interactions entre alpage et exploitations utilisatrices. Afin de renouveler ces cadres d’analyse, notre travail de thèse propose une modélisation conceptuelle du fonctionnement du système « alpage-exploitations », intégrant les plans biophysique et de la gestion. La construction du modèle s’appuie sur la combinaison de travaux en écologie et en agronomie « système », et de dires d’expert (modélisation participative). Le modèle est mis à l’épreuve sur une diversité de cas, issus du réseau Alpages Sentinelles dans le massif Alpin. Une analyse de la vulnérabilité des systèmes à la recrudescence des aléas climatiques est effectuée en étudiant leur exposition aux aléas puis leur sensibilité ; afin d’intégrer la dynamique de long terme du changement climatique dans la gestion des alpages, une analyse mobilisant les théories de la résilience socio-écologique est proposée en complément.

International audience; Au plus près du terrain, les relations entre cabanes, enclos et parcours des troupeaux conditionnent les partages de l’espace pastoral. Elles sont très diverses et varient selon le relief, la végétation, les espèces élevées et les productions (lait, laine, viande). Observer ces relations sur Anéou permet à la fois d’appréhender des pratiques d’utilisation des territoires d’estive et de répertorier les traces qui leur sont liées. Pour l’archéologue, appelé dans sa démarche à faire le chemin inverse, des traces aux pratiques, constituer des référentiels ethnographiques liant les traces aux différentes formes que prennent les territoires de parcours est essentiel.

International audience; Engager les fouilles parallèlement aux prospections est un principe général des opérations d’archéologie pastorale : en l’absence de matériel datant en surface, l’inventaire des structures, extrêmement nombreuses, risque sinon de se prolonger indéfiniment sans aucun critère de datation autre que des chronologies relatives fondées sur des degrés de conservation différentielle des sites. Fouilles ou sondages ? La nouveauté des formes de sites observées en Ossau rend impossible la transposition des typochronologies obtenues sur les terrains précédents, qu’ils soient pyrénéens, ou même alpins. Elle oblige à repartir de zéro, pour établir un référentiel local. Pour y parvenir assez rapidement, et obtenir ainsi une première vision d’ensemble du corpus, on a opté pour des séries de sondages préliminaires d’extension réduite.

Cortisol and DHEA are involved in adaptive and constructive coping strategies response to environmental changes. The aim of this study was to examine changes in hair cortisol and DHEA concentrations (and consequently their ratio) produced in response to a change from indoor winter to summer grazing conditions in dairy cows. The study population comprised 15 dairy cows from one single herd. Hair samples were obtained using electric razor from the animal's forehead at the time points: 0 (ST1), 30 (ST2) and 60 days (ST3) after the start of summer grazing. Hair cortisol concentrations increase during the first month of grazing from ST1 to ST2 (1.29 ± 0.083 pg/mg vs. 1.64 ± 0.120 pg/mg; P < 0.05) and then remained constant from ST2 to ST3 (1.64 ± 0.120 pg/mg vs. 1.40 ± 0.066 pg/mg; P > 0.05). The hair DHEA concentrations were higher during grazing, ST2, than in stall, ST1 (342.06 ± 17.594 pg/mg vs. 200.40 ± 9.989 pg/mg; P < 0.05) and then remained constant from ST2 to ST3 (342.06 ± 17.594 pg/mg vs. 303.67 ± 18.819 pg/mg; P > 0.05). The cortisol to DHEA ratio decreased during the first month of grazing (6.58 ± 0.480 pg/mg vs. 5.04 ± 0.578 pg/mg; P < 0.05) remaining then constant from P2 to P3 (5.04 ± 0.578 pg/mg vs. 4.77 ± 0.254 pg/mg; P > 0.05). During transition from winter housing to high mountain conditions variations in hair cortisol and DHEA levels are produced that suggest that the HPA axis reacts to environmental changes such as changes in social groups, diet, housing, and transport. Data suggest that even if animals undergo important environmental change moving from winter housing to summer highland grazing maintain the resilience. A beneficial impact of summer grazing on the health of dairy cows may be evaluated using hair matrix.

La prospection effectuée en juin 2012 sur une petite partie de la commune de Larrau s’inscrit dans une démarche de recherche initiée par des membres du laboratoire ITEM EA 3002 de l’UPPA. Depuis 2003, un projet vise à explorer la vallée de la Soule d’une manière comparative ; l’autre champ d’exploration est situé dans le sud des Appalaches en Géorgie (Université de Géorgie à Athens). Cette démarche est fondée sur la mémoire inscrite dans les paysages, véritables archives naturelles, afin de comprendre le fonctionnement de l’anthroposystème souletin, constitué par des facteurs naturels (biotiques et abiotiques), mais aussi par une société montagnarde et une économie agropastorale. Les périodes concernées par les études sont comprises entre le Moyen Age et aujourd’hui, périodes aussi documentées par des archives.Les interactions entre ces différents éléments sont au coeur de la démarche et l’occupation du territoire constitue un des éléments exploré. Toutefois, et jusqu’à présent, l’approche archéologique n’avait pas été réellement intégrée. Pourtant, la zone avait fait l’objet de prospections axées sur la protohistoire. En effet, les vestiges du type tertres, tumulus et cromlech sont particulièrement bien repérables.L’objectif de cette nouvelle prospection était très clairement centré sur les structures à vocation économique, principalement liées au pastoralisme. Elle porte sur deux zones : l’est du pic d’Orhy, le long de la frontière espagnole d’une part et l’ombrée de la Montagne Saint-Joseph d’autre part. Reprenant les méthodologies utilisées dans en Cerdagne et Ossau, une trentaine de sites inédits ont été repérés. Il s’agit de sept enclos, de douze cabanes et de neuf tertres. La fonction de ces derniers reste au stade de l’hypothèse (tertre d’habitat ou funéraire), mais tous les tertres repérés cette année sont à proximité à des cabanes et des enclos. En revanche, enclos ou cabanes peuvent être soit isolés (à moins que les structures associées aient été détruites par les cayolars actuels), soit associés. Ainsi à Uthurzéhéta, c’est une cabane, un enclos et cinq tertres qui sont installés dans le petit cirque.Il est encore difficile de tirer des conclusions de cet inventaire préliminaire. Il faut cependant noter que la concentration des structures (enclos et couloirs de traite) est faible au regard des expériences ossaloises et cerdanes. Les résultats de cette première campagne sont tout à fait encourageants, même si des difficultés subsistent. Nous souhaitons ainsi pouvoir poursuivre cette démarche l’an prochain et l’associer à une recherche documentaire.

Our final aim is a modelization of pastoral territories based on archaeological sites. We decided to apply the HBDS method in order to analyze pastoral territories of the Pyrenean National Park with a Geographical Information System.
