Background: Metadehumanization (the feeling of being considered as less than human by others) is a pervasive phenomenon in psychiatric states, notably promoting self-dehumanization and suicide antecedents. However, its role in suicidal ideations among patients with addictive disorders remains unexplored. We thus investigated the involvement of metadehumanization/self-dehumanization in suicidal ideations and suicidal thoughts interference in severe alcohol use disorder. Methods: We measured metadehumanization, suicidal ideations, and desire for social contact through questionnaires among 35 recently detoxified patients with severe alcohol use disorder (26 males). We measured animalistic/mechanistic self-dehumanization using an Implicit Association Task, and suicidal thoughts interference using a Stroop Task with suicide-related words. We performed regression analyses while controlling for depression/anxiety. Results: Animalistic self-dehumanization was positively associated with suicidal thoughts interference and with decreased desire for social interactions, such link being absent for metadehumanization or mechanistic self-dehumanization. Conclusions: This link between self-dehumanization and suicide-related factors suggests that a reduced sense of belonging to humanity is associated with self-harm antecedents. Results also emphasize the importance of using indirect measures to investigate sensitive variables, such as self-dehumanization and suicidal thoughts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Domestic workers ,Suicidal ideations ,Rwanda ,Suicide ,Prevalence ,Employment ,Psychology ,BF1-990 - Abstract
Abstract Background Due to urbanization and changes in family structure, the need for domestic workers has surged in many developing countries, including Rwanda. While being employed as a domestic worker presents financial benefits to many of them and their dependents, it also comes with risks and difficulties that might harm the domestic worker's mental health. Aim This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with suicidal behaviors (i.e., suicidal ideations, plans, and attempt(s)) among domestic workers in Rwanda. Method In this cross-sectional study, data was captured from 884 domestic workers in Kigali, Rwanda. Suicidal ideation was measured using questions from the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), while suicide attempts and plans were measured using questions adopted from previous studies in the region. The methods used/plan to attempt suicide were also captured from individuals with a recent history of suicide plan/attempt(s). Three separate regression models were employed to ascertain the factors associated with suicidal behaviors. Results The prevalence of past-year suicidal behaviors was 32.5% for suicidal ideations, 9.5% for suicide plans, and 7.8% for suicidal attempts. Being female and having a chronic medical illness were linked to a higher risk of participating in any form of suicidal behavior. Suicidal ideations were less likely to occur among those who attained secondary education. However, more years of working as a domestic worker were associated with an increased likelihood of suicidal ideations. Having more than five dependents at work increased the likelihood of experiencing suicidal plans or attempts among domestic workers. For those who attempted suicide, overdosing with medications/drugs was the most common method of attempting. Conclusion Domestic workers have prevalent suicide behaviors, especially among females and those with a chronic medical illness, more years of work experience, and those with many household members at work. Based on the present study, for domestic workers at risk, there is a critical need for focused mental health interventions and support networks in various sectors of the domestic labor force.

Bullying is a risk factor for the physical and mental health of adolescents. The advent of new technologies has resulted in a brand-new type of bullying, cyberbullying (CB). The co-occurring effects of cyberbullying and traditional bullying(TB) forms of bullying on adolescent mental health are unclear. We performed a meta-analysis to explore the unique and combined effects of CB and TB on adverse psychological outcomes in victims by conducting a joint study of both types of bullying. By doing so, we provide the basis for a comprehensive community bullying prevention program. The database PubMed, PsyclNFO, and Web of Science were searched for studies from 2010 to 2021. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) reporting guideline was followed for data abstraction, and the NIH tool was used to evaluate study-level risk of bias. 42 studies with 266,888 participants were identified. Random-Effect models were used for our study. The moderator analysis was used to explore the moderator of prevalence. Studies with three groups of victims (TB only, CB only, and Both) and two groups of victims (TB and CB) were compared in subgroup analysis. The mean victimization rate was 24.32% (95% CI 20.32–28.83%) for TB and 11.10% (95% CI 9.12–13.44%) for CB. Roughly one-third of TB victims were also victimized by CB. Conversely, only about one-third of CB victims were free from TB. The estimated ORs for depression, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and self-harm in the three-group (TB only, CB only and Both) analysis were: depression [TB only: 3.33 (2.22–5.00); CB only: 3.38 (2.57–4.46); Both: 5.30 (2.43–11.56)]; suicidal ideations [TB only: 3.08 (2.12–4.46); CB only: 3.52 (2.38–5.20); Both: 6.64 (4.14–10.64)]; self-harm [TB only: 2.70 (1.86–3.91); CB only: 3.57 (3.20–3.98); Both: 5.57 (2.11–16.00)]; and suicide attempts: [TB only: 2.61 (1.50–4.55); CB only: 3.52 (2.50–4.98); Both: 7.82 (3.83–15.93)]. TB and CB victimization among youth are a matter of public health concern. Victimization appears to be a marker of greater psychopathological severity, particularly suicide-related issues. ObjectiveMethodResultsDiscussionThe Blue Whale Challenge (BWCh), widely reported as a media hoax in 2017, was allegedly an online game encouraging teenagers to commit suicide.Google Trends identified the peak interest in the BWCh in March 2017. Tweets containing ‘suicide’ were analyzed, with each tweet reviewed for personal suicidal content. Data on suicide attempts and deaths were sourced from the National Police Headquarters, while hospital admissions data (ICD-10 codes F00-F99 and T36-T65) was collected from the Hospital Morbidity Survey. Crisis helpline data for children and adolescents (116 111) was also gathered.Between January 24 and April 10, 2017, 17,063 tweets containing ‘suicide’ were posted, with 240 identified as personal suicidal content: 65.7% expressed suicidal thoughts, 11.7% plans, and 1.3% encouragement. In April 2017, suicide deaths were higher among 19–24-year-olds compared to April 2018, while suicide attempts were lower among 13–18-year-olds compared to April 2019. No significant increase in suicide attempts was found during the BWCh period for individuals aged 0-18. Hospital admissions for T36-T65 codes peaked in 2017 for the 5–14 age group. Crisis helpline data showed decreasing phone calls and increasing chat messages from 2015 to 2020.There is no definitive link between BWCh popularity and a rise in suicidal behaviour nationwide. Despite widespread media coverage, there was no noticeable surge in suicide statistics. This study highlights the prevalence of harmful suicidal content on Twitter, emphasising the importance of mental health promotion, prevention, and support for social media users. THERAPEUTIC alliance ,SUICIDAL ideation ,ATTEMPTED suicide ,PSYCHOTHERAPY ,EMOTION regulation - Abstract
Chronic suicidal ideations can be consistently present as part of the individual's sense of identity and self-regulation or as a reoccurring pattern to control intense feelings and communicate and relate experiences or intentions. While they can be the precursor to self-harm and suicide attempts, requiring a thorough risk assessment, they can also represent a way to control, avoid, or contain intolerable feelings and experiences. In addition, suicidal ideations can be either deeply internalized and hidden or indirectly or directly conveyed to others. This article focuses on understanding and approaching chronic suicidal ideations that specifically relate to self- and interpersonal characterological functioning, i.e., sense of identity, self-regulation, emotion regulation, and interpersonal intentions. Suicidal ideations must be identified and assessed both in terms of intention, i.e., motivation, plans, and means to harm oneself or end one's life, as well as in terms of function, i.e., related to selfregulatory strategies for counterbalancing or protecting against overwhelming, painful, and frightening external, interpersonal, or internal experiences. Therapeutic strategies and challenges will be discussed, including engaging patients in the therapeutic alliance and building consistency, trust, and reliability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts and self-harming behaviors often struggle with various mental health, social, family, and personal challenges. Existential anxiety or meaninglessness may contribute to these thoughts and behaviors. The current study aims to examine the impact of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy on reducing existential anxiety and the propensity for self-harming behaviors and suicidal ideations among students. The present study was quasi-experimental, and its research design was pre-test-post-test with a control group. The statistical population of the research consisted of the students of Hamedan Azad University in 2022. The convenience sampling method was used to select the sample. After the Self-Harm Inventory (1998), Lawrence Good's Preliminary Measure of Existential Anxiety (1974), and Beck's Scale-for-Suicidal-Ideation (1961) were implemented among the statistical population of the research. The essential data was collected and analyzed using SPSS-26 software. Sixteen individuals with scores above the cut-off point were chosen and randomly divided into two groups of eight people each: An intervention group and a control group. The intervention group was exposed to the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy group for eight sessions. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used to analyze the data. The results revealed that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy significantly reduced existential anxiety (P ≤ 0.001), self-harming tendencies (P ≤ 0.001), and suicidal ideations (P ≤ 0.001). The study's findings suggest that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is essential in reducing suicidal ideations, self-harm tendencies, and existential anxiety. As a result, it effectively promotes mental health and fosters community well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and contributing factors of depression and suicidal ideations among stroke survivors in Nigeria. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study comprising 75 consenting stroke survivors who were purposively recruited from 2 tertiary hospitals. Suicidal ideations and depression were measured using standard questionnaires. Obtained data was analyzed with appropriate statistical tools. Results: 9.3% of the participants had depression while 4% reported suicidal ideations. Significant correlation existed between suicidal ideations and depression (ρ =.31, P =.01), and levels of depression and suicidal ideations (χ
2 = 85.76; P <.01). Depression had a significant relationship with gender and marital status, while suicidal ideations had a significant relationship with marital status. Females were significantly more depressed than their male counterparts (U = 512.50, P =.04) and also had a higher score on suicidal ideations. The widowed/divorced recorded the highest scores on depression (χ2 = 8.77, P =.01) and suicidal ideations (χ2 = 6.62; P =.04). Conclusion: A worrisome prevalence of depression was reported among the study participants. The level of suicidal ideations was quite low. Depression and suicidal ideations were higher among females and those who lost their life partners (either by divorce or death). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Suicidal ideation is a major health problem that occurs in response to complex interactions among psychological, sociocultural, and environmental factors. The phenomenon of suicidal ideation among healthcare professionals is still shrouded in mystery in Jordanian society, and there is still a scarcity of studies on its relationship with job strain and job satisfaction has been examined in the Arab world. Therefore, to fill this gap, this study aimed to reveal the prevalence of suicidal ideation among Jordanian hospitals health care professionals, and its relationship to job satisfaction and job strain. Additionally, how some sociodemographic factors were correlated with suicidal ideation levels, including age, sex, monthly income, occupation, years of experience, and sector type. Data were collected through a survey including sociodemographic characteristics, Suicidal ideation Scale (SIS), Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS), and Demand Control Support Questionnaire (DCSQ). The survey was distributed among 910 physicians and nurses of both sexes in public and private Jordanian hospitals. The survey was conducted using an anonymous online platform via Google Forms between October 2022 and December 2023. In light of the strain theory of suicide (STS), our results showed that physicians and nurses reported low levels of suicidal ideation and job satisfaction, with high levels of job strain. Suicidal ideation was positively correlated with job strain and negatively correlated with job satisfaction. Job satisfaction is negatively correlated with job strain. Job satisfaction was a significant mediator between job strain and suicidal ideation. Greater attention should be paid to the work environment in healthcare, particularly to enhance social support, increase job satisfaction levels, reduce job strain, and provide extensive training on effective prevention strategies for suicidal ideation and behaviour in the workplace. Additionally, policies and practices related to the health sector should be modified to create stable, healthy, and safe relationships and work environments.

The present study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on levels of self-criticism and suicidal ideations in adolescents with self-harm. The research method was semi-experimental which was carried out with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of the research included male adolescents in the age range of 13-18 years in Ardabil city in the second half of 2022. The research sample consisted of 30 adolescents who were selected by the purposeful sampling method and randomly replaced in experimental (15 adolescents) and control groups (15 adolescents). The self-criticism level scale of Thompson and Zoroff and the Beck suicidal ideation questionnaire were used to collect data. For the experimental group, eight 90-minute sessions of ACT were performed. Data analysis were done with the multivariate analysis of covariance test. Based on the findings, ACT was effective on comparative self-criticism, internal self-criticism, and suicidal ideations in adolescents with self-mutilation. Therefore, according to the results, ACT can reduce the levels of self-criticism and suicidal ideations in adolescents with self-mutilation. Therefore, counselors and therapists can use the mentioned treatment method to reduce the levels of self-criticism and suicidal ideations of adolescents.

Background: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a debilitating chronic disease of significant public health and clinical importance. It affects multiple systems in the body and has neuro-immunological characteristics. The disease is characterized by a prominent symptom called post-exertional malaise (PEM), as well as abnormalities in the immune-inflammatory pathways, mitochondrial dysfunctions and disturbances in neuroendocrine pathways. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of ME/CFS on the mental health and secondary psychosocial manifestations of patients, as well as their coping mechanisms. Method: In 2021, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Switzerland. A self-administered paper questionnaire survey was used to gather data from 169 individuals diagnosed with ME/CFS. Results: The majority of the patients (90.5%) reported a lack of understanding of their disease, resulting in patients avoiding talking about the disease due to disbelief, trivialization and avoidance of negative reactions. They felt most supported by close family members (67.1%). Two thirds of the patients (68.5%) experienced stigmatization. ME/CFS had a negative impact on mental health in most patients (88.2%), leading to sadness (71%), hopelessness for relief (66.9%), suicidal thoughts (39.3%) and secondary depression (14.8%). Half of the male patients experienced at least one suicidal thought since clinical onset. Factors significantly associated with depression were the lack of cure, disabilities associated with ME/CFS, social isolation and the fact that life was not worth anymore with ME/CFS. The three main factors contributing to suicidal thoughts were (i) being told the disease was only psychosomatic (89.5%), (ii) being at the end of one's strength (80.7%) and (iii) not feeling being understood by others (80.7%). Conclusion: This study provided first time significant insights into the mental and psychological well-being of ME/CFS patients in Switzerland. The findings highlight the substantial experiences of stigmatization, secondary depression and suicidal thoughts compared to other chronic diseases, calling for an urgent need in Switzerland to improve ME/CFS patient's medical, psychological and social support, in order to alleviate the severe mental health burden associated with this overlooked somatic disease.

Given the limited data available in the literature, the aim of this study was to investigate the potential role played by the temporal dynamics of anhedonia (lifelong anhedonia and recent changes in anhedonia) in the occurrence of suicidal ideations in major depressed subjects. The clinical data of 285 major depressed subjects recruited from the database of the Erasme Hospital Sleep Laboratory were analyzed. A score on item nine of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) ≥1 and/or an identification during the systematic psychiatric assessment were used to determine the presence of suicidal ideations. The association between anhedonia complaints (lifelong anhedonia and recent change in anhedonia) and suicidal ideations in major depressed subjects was assessed by logistic regression analyzes. The prevalence of suicidal ideations was 39.3% in our sample of major depressed subjects. After adjusting for the main confounding factors, multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that unlike lifelong anhedonia, only recent changes in anhedonia were a risk factor for suicidal ideations in major depressed subjects. Given this potential involvement of the recent change in anhedonia in the occurrence of suicidal ideations in major depressed subjects, it seems essential to better identify and adequately manage this specific form of anhedonia in order to open new perspectives for the prevention of suicide in this particular sub-population. Objectives: To synthesize and reinterpret findings from primary qualitative studies on the emotional experience of health care professionals working with mental health and mental health professionals providing care for people with suicidal behavior. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature with the SPIDER structured search strategy in six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and LILACS). A meta-synthesis was performed with data from qualitative studies published between 2005 and 2021. Two independent reviewers screened and assessed the articles. They evaluated methodological quality of included articles, extracted data, and performed the thematic synthesis. Results: Of 852 articles, 21 met the inclusion/exclusion criteria and were synthesized. The meta-synthesis revealed three descriptive themes: coping with adverse experiences; coming across fortunate experiences; professional-personal implications. Based on these descriptive themes, we elaborated the analytical theme: bittersweet experiences of personal and professional transformation. Conclusions: Mental health professionals working with people manifesting suicidal behaviors must cope with complex emotional experiences that involve controversial and ambivalent feelings. Such feelings have repercussions that may transform personal and professional life. The present results are useful for the development and implementation of interventions that promote better overall mental health outcomes for healthcare providers. Abstract Background Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among university students have been linked to a variety of factors and have been shown to have a dose–response relationship with adult health and behavior. Objective To investigate the effect of exposure to ACEs on academic performance, depression, and suicidal ideations among university students. Methods A cross-sectional survey among university students at a public university in southwestern Uganda was conducted in 2021, integrating the Adverse Childhood Experiences International Questionnaire for assessing ACEs, the Patient Health Questionnaire for assessing depression symptoms and suicidal ideations, and questions assessing the family structure and academic performance as adopted from similar studies. Regression analysis was performed, and 3 models were generated to answer the study hypotheses. Results A total of 653 undergraduate university students with a mean age of 22.80 (± 3.16) years were recruited. Almost all students (99.8%) experienced one or more ACEs, with physical abuse being the common ACE reported. The average depression symptom severity was statistically higher among individuals who experienced any form of ACEs. No relationship was observed between the ACEs experienced and self-rated academic performance. Similarly, on regression analysis, the cumulative number of ACEs was not associated with self-rated academic performance (β = − 0.007; 95% CI − 0.031 to 0.016; p = 0.558). However, the cumulative number of ACEs was positively associated with depression symptom severity (β = 0.684; 95% CI 0.531–0.837; p

HEAD & neck cancer , *PSYCHOTHERAPY , *MENTAL illness , *SUICIDAL ideation , *THERAPEUTIC alliance , *CANCER patients - Abstract
The paper aims to show the multilevel and complex cooperation and the inclusion of the psychotherapist leading the psychotherapy in the medical team at the radiotherapy and clinical oncology clinic. We illustrate these interventions with the case of Stan. This 43‐year‐old firefighter was diagnosed with advanced head and neck cancer and pre‐existing mental health problems meeting the criteria of ICD‐10: obsessive‐compulsive disorder, post‐traumatic stress disorder and psychoactive substance abuse. During the treatment, suicidal thoughts and impulses emerged, triggered at the hospital by electronic noises and the feeling of entrapment without a way out. This situation put the patient at high risk and the whole healthcare team needed an urgent effective response. The patient agreed to stay in the secured room, where he was cared for by doctors, nurses, a dietitian, and a psychotherapist. He actively attended daily sessions with noticeable engagement. Psychotherapy sessions focused on alleviating posttraumatic stress disorder and OCD. Mindfulness and breathwork‐based exercises were implemented to increase non‐judgemental self‐awareness and regulate the over‐aroused nervous system. As a result, the patient's mental health has improved and the completion of the cancer treatment was possible. Psychotherapy, good therapeutic alliance, and attentive teamwork effectively managed his mental health and treatment‐related symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among university students have been linked to a variety of factors and have been shown to have a dose–response relationship with adult health and behavior. Objective: To investigate the effect of exposure to ACEs on academic performance, depression, and suicidal ideations among university students. Methods: A cross-sectional survey among university students at a public university in southwestern Uganda was conducted in 2021, integrating the Adverse Childhood Experiences International Questionnaire for assessing ACEs, the Patient Health Questionnaire for assessing depression symptoms and suicidal ideations, and questions assessing the family structure and academic performance as adopted from similar studies. Regression analysis was performed, and 3 models were generated to answer the study hypotheses. Results: A total of 653 undergraduate university students with a mean age of 22.80 (± 3.16) years were recruited. However, the cumulative number of ACEs was positively associated with depression symptom severity (β = 0.684; 95% CI 0.531–0.837; p < 0.001), as well as increased the likelihood of suicidal ideations (aOR = 1.264; 95% CI 01.090–1.465; p < 0.001). Conclusions: The burden of ACEs is exceedingly high among Ugandan university students, highlighting the urgency in strengthening effective child protection strategies to protect Uganda’s rapidly growing population from mental ill-health and avoid future psychological disability, a burden to the healthcare system. The study's findings will also be useful to practitioners/policymakers working to prevent/limit child maltreatment globally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this retrospective study was to question the psychological consequences of the health crisis in a pediatric population, through an analysis of the variations in the activity data of a pedopsychiatric emergency consultation service. The present study is a retrospective and comparative epidemiological study based on an analysis of activity data from a pedopsychiatric emergency consultation at the Lille University Hospital center collected over the period contemporary of the social restriction measures of March 17th, 2020 to May 19th, 2021 as well as those collected after the lifting of these measures from May 19th, 2021 to May 31st, 2022 by comparing them to the activity on this same service over the equivalent periods between January 1st, 2017 and March 17th, 2020. Comparisons centered around the three confinement periods were also carried out. Any patient between 0 and 18 years old taken care of in this emergency consultation was included in this study. A significant increase in drug prescriptions and consultations for suicidal ideations was observed during, but also at a distance from social restriction measures. The first confinement was marked by a significant drop in the number of consultations and a significant increase in the drafting of child protection documents. These results were therefore in favor of an increase in suicidality in the pediatric population during and after the lifting of social restriction measures, as well as an increase in situations relating to child protection during the first confinement. The significant increase in discordant discharge drug prescriptions with the more modest increase in hospitalizations foreshadowed a mismatch between needs and hospitalization capacity. An impact of the health crisis could therefore be observed on the activity of a pedopsychiatric emergency consultation during, but also after the lifting of social restriction measures. This raises the importance of not limiting research to periods of confinement, as well as the question of the reversibility of the variations observed for the generation considered. The metasynthesis revealed three descriptive themes: coping with adverse experiences; coming across fortunate experiences; professional-personal implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Suicide is a major public health problem and for decades, it has remained one of the leading causes of injury and death worldwide. The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence of suicidal behavior, suicidal ideation, and patterns among youth in the Anywaa zone of the Gambella regional state, Southwest Ethiopia. Methods and materials A mixed-method study design was used in which a quantitative survey was conducted along with qualitative interviews and FGDs in the Anywaa zone. A total of 136 respondents were included in the survey study from the two woredas. The survey was conducted to assess the prevalence of suicidal behavior and ideations in a sample of preparatory school youth students. A pre-tested and structured questionnaire was used for the descriptive analysis. Qualitative information was also obtained through interviews and focus group discussions to identify the patterns of suicide and to gain more nuanced participants/ survivors’ experiences. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20, for which descriptive statistics were used. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results Suicidal behaviors and ideation were high among youths in the study area. In this study 62.3% of respondents reported they had heard others talk about their wish to die by suicide, 68 (64.2%) of youth said they had heard many youths claim that “I feel like there is no way out”, 48 (43.3%) reported having seen someone with the signs of planning a suicide such as obtaining a weapon or writing a suicide note. About 68 (64.2%) of participants said, “My family would be better off without me.” The majority of respondents were in the age groups ranging from 26 to 30 years. The results on the patterns of suicide attempts showed that hanging and drug overdose or poisoning were the most common patterns used by both men and women. Conclusion The findings indicate that the prevalence of suicide-related behaviors and ideations was high among youths in the Anywaa zone. The results on the patterns of suicide attempts showed that hanging and drug overdose or poisoning were the most common patterns used by both men and women. As a result, we would like to recommend that Government, Non-Governmental Organizations NGOs, and Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs), along with health care providers and counselors should work together by creating awareness, and by establishing Programs that target youths. Meanwhile, early identification and management of suicide risk in youth should be strengthened.

Abstract Introduction Major depression episode (MDE) and postpartum depression (PPD) have the same diagnosis criteria, but dissimilarities may be present regarding the frequency and structure of depressive symptoms. Methods We used data from the IGEDEPP Cohort (France) to examine DSM-5 depressive symptoms in two groups of women: 486 with PPD and 871 with a history of non-perinatal MDE. We compare (i) the frequency of each depressive symptom adjusted for the severity of depression, (ii) the global structure of depressive symptom networks, and (iii) the centrality of each symptom in the two networks. Results Women with PPD were significantly more likely to have appetite disturbance, psychomotor symptoms, and fatigue than those with MDE, while sadness, anhedonia, sleep disturbance, and suicidal ideation were significantly less common. There were no significant differences in the global structure of depressive symptoms of MDE and PPD. However, the most central criterion of the MDE network was “Sadness” while it was “Suicidal ideations” for the PPD network. “Sleep” and “Suicidal ideations” criteria were more central for PPD network, whereas “Culpability” was more important for MDE network than for PPD network. Conclusion We found differences in depressive symptoms expression between PPD and MDE, which justify continuing to clinically distinguish PPD from MDE.

Previous studies suggest that mental illness symptoms among adolescents, such as conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and panic disorder symptoms often associate with suicidal ideations. Despite this, few studies have examined whether these mental illness symptoms associate with suicidal ideations among African American adolescents. To address these limitations, the current study examined whether conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and panic disorder symptoms associated with suicidal ideations (N = 261). Using binominal logistic regression, results suggest that conduct disorder symptoms were associated with a higher likelihood of endorsing suicidal ideations than oppositional defiant disorder symptoms. Finally, panic disorder symptoms and gender differences were not associated with suicidal ideations. Preventive efforts and psychotherapy implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ATTEMPTED suicide , *COVID-19 pandemic , *YOUNG adults , *SUICIDAL behavior , *POISSON regression - Abstract
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and public life restrictions may have a negative impact on people's mental health. Therefore, we analyzed whether this condition affected the occurrence of suicide attempts (SA) over 20 months during the pandemic period. Methods: We included patient records according to DSM-5 criteria for suicidal behavior disorders (n = 825) between Jan 1, 2017, and Dec 31, 2021. We applied interrupted time-series Poisson regression models to investigate the effect of the pandemic on SA occurrence, time trends, and seasonal patterns in the whole group of patients as well as stratified by age and gender. Results: There was no significant effect of the pandemic on the occurrence of SA in the overall group. However, we observed a significant impact of the pandemic on the seasonal pattern of SA, also the variance differed significantly (pre-pandemic mean ± variance: 13.33 ± 15.75, pandemic: mean ± variance: 13.86 ± 7.26), indicating less periodic variation in SA during the pandemic. Male patients and young adults mainly contributed to this overall effect. Subgroup analysis revealed a significant difference in SA trends during the pandemic in older adults (>55 years) compared with younger adults (18-35 years); SA numbers increased in older adults and decreased in younger adults as the pandemic progressed.Limitations: A few patients may have received initial care in an emergency department after SA without being referred to psychiatry. Conclusions: In general, the COVID-19 pandemic and related measures did not significantly affect the occurrence of SA but did significantly affect the dynamics. In addition, the pandemic appeared to affect suicidal behavior differently across age groups as it progressed. Particularly for the older adult group, negative long-term effects of the pandemic on suicidal behavior can be derived from the present results, indicating the need to strengthen suicide prevention for the elderly. Introduction: Self‐injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) are difficult to predict, and novel risk factors must be identified. While diminished interoception is associated with SITBs cross‐sectionally, the current study assesses whether multiple measures of interoception predict future SITBs. Methods: Adults (N = 43) with recent SITBs completed assessments of interoception during a baseline visit. Participants then completed biweekly assessments for 6 months in which they reported the presence and severity/frequency of suicidal ideation and nonsuicidal self‐injury (NSSI). Results: Multilevel models were performed, where baseline interoceptive measures predicted presence and severity/frequency of suicidal ideation and NSSI at follow‐up. The Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) Trusting subscale was the only significant predictor of the presence/severity of suicidal ideation. The MAIA Trusting, Emotional Awareness, and Body Listening subscales significantly predicted the presence of NSSI. The MAIA Emotional Awareness subscale and the Body Perception Questionnaire significantly predicted NSSI frequency. Discussion: Diminished body trust predicted both suicidal ideation and NSSI, indicating a potential shared risk pathway. However, two interoception measures (Body Listening subscale and Body Perception Questionnaire) were associated with NSSI only, indicating potentially unique risk pathways. Given the differential associations between interoception measures and SITBs, results highlight the importance of clearly defining how interoception is measured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In palliative care, patients who have a serious illness associated with severe suffering are cared for, especially at the end of life. At times, patients in palliative care express suicidal thoughts, a wish to die or to hasten their death, which can be experienced as challenging for healthcare professionals to respond to. Suicide is when a person inflicts injury on to themselves with the intention to end their life. It is associated with mental illness, however, it can also have other causes such as, crises resulting from mental pain or physical illness. As well as the desire for a hastened death which is difficult to distinguish from thoughts of suicide and which is based on the suffering of patients with serious life-threatening diseases. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the experience and occurrence of a desire to hasten one's death, as well as suicidal thoughts in patients with palliative care needs. Method: General literature review with an inductive methodology based on 17 peer-reviewed articles that were analyzed utilizing a thematic analytical approach. Results: The results illuminated six themes; Existential factors that influence the experiences of a wish to die, The experiences of identity in relation to the life situation, Symptom burden and disease burden as contributing factors to a wish to die, How the relationship with healthcare affects patients who wish to die, Actions to hasten death and Occurrence and frequency of a wish to die. The most prevalent theme was existential factors that was associated with feelings surrounding meaning, dignity, quality of life, shame, and hopelessness. The feeling of being a burden to others and a loss of autonomy was also included. Physical symptoms such as pain, as well as psychological symptoms such as depression were also found to be present. Conclusion: Patients with palliative care needs, who express a desire to hasten their death, endure complex suffering that is caused by a multitude o

- Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to surprise us all with its aftermath. The connection between the virus and neuropsychiatric symptoms is thought to arise from both direct and indirect impacts on the brain, and various explanations have been proposed to account for these effects. This is a case of visual and persisting auditory hallucinations in a middle-aged man, with no previous psychiatric illnesses, after suffering from very severe symptoms of COVID-19. These hallucinations remained for months following recovery from the virus. While hospitalized, the patient also reported having a near-death experience and seeing his deceased father. Despite the inevitable time frame limitation when it comes to severe neuropsychiatric manifestations of patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19, it is imperative to research adequate and effective interventions., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent for treatment and open access publication was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. 29. How do adolescents consider life and death? A cognition-to-action framework for suicide prevention.

- Abstract
Rising rates of suicide fatality, attempts, and ideations among adolescents aged 10-19 over the past two decades represent a national public health priority. Theories that seek to understand suicidal ideation overwhelmingly focus on the transition from ideation to attempt and on a sole cognition: active suicidal ideation - the serious consideration of killing one's self, with less attention to non-suicidal cognitions that emerge during adolescence that may have implications for suicidal behavior. A large body of research exists that characterizes adolescence not only as a period of heightened onset and prevalence of active suicidal ideation and the desire to no longer be alive (i.e., passive suicidal ideation), but also for non-suicidal cognitions about life and death. Our review synthesizes extant literature in the content, timing and mental imagery of thoughts adolescents have about their (1) life; and (2) mortality that may co-occur with active and passive suicidal ideation that have received limited attention in adolescent suicidology. Our "cognition-to-action framework for adolescent suicide prevention" builds on existing ideation-to-action theories to identify life and non-suicidal mortality cognitions during adolescence that represent potential leverage points for the prevention of attempted suicide and premature death during this period and across the life span.

Objective: To assess the frequency of compliance to provide psycho-education in patients suffering from suicidal ideations. Study Design: Retrospective Descriptive cross-sectional study. Place and Duration: Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Center, Lahore from 1st January 2021 to 31st December, 2021. Methodology: Electronic medical record of patients visiting psychiatric clinic at Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Center from 1st January 2021 to 31st December 2021. Results: Among the total 487 patients majority (34%) were consulted for pre-transplant assessment. The ideations were reported by 6.8% patients only, whereas in 1.4% of patients the record regarding suicidal ideations were not found. The mental health team provided psycho-education in 93% of all patients with ideations. The data suggests that medications were prescribed in all patients who reported suicidal ideation. Conclusion: The suicidal ideations are essential to ask in the clinical encounter. It is concluded that patients report ideations but to enquire is essential. The suicidal risk assessment is not dependent on the clinical site, i.e. whether a tertiary care center or a transplant center. We also conclude that documentation is pertinent and this can be achieved by selecting suicidal risk assessment as department's Key Performance Indicator (KPI).. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Suicide rates are higher for people with an opioid use disorder, compared to the general population. This study aims to characterize opioid agonist treatment entrants who present a history of suicidal ideations or suicide attempts, according to concurrent comorbidity profiles, in an opioid use disorder treatment facility. A chart review design was used. Data was collected from 202 patient files. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. In multivariate analysis, patients with a diagnosis or symptoms of a mood disorder were 2.48 [1.01 – 6.11] times more likely to report suicidal ideations and 2.64 [1.05 – 6.62] times more likely to report suicide attempts. Those with a diagnosis or symptoms of an anxiety disorder were 2.41 [1.01 – 5.81] times more likely to report suicidal ideations. Patients who report chronic pain were 2.59 [1.06 – 6.35] times more likely to report suicidal ideations as well. The probability to report suicide attempts was 5.09 [1.16 – 22.4] times higher for those with a confirmed or suspected personality disorder. Clinicians should bear in mind the high suicide rates in people with opioid use disorder, as well as the importance of addressing suicidal risk and providing easy access to mental health and chronic pain treatment as part of the service offer in opioid agonist treatment. Future research should focus on evaluating the effectiveness of treatments aimed at addressing the needs of opioid agonist treatment patients with interrelated mental health and pain comorbidity profiles to reduce risks associated with suicide. Individuals with insomnia are a subpopulation at high-risk of suicide. However, despite the elements in favour of an implication of anhedonia in the occurrence of current suicidal ideations (SI), no study has investigated the role played by this affective symptom in the occurrence of current SI in individuals with insomnia. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of current SI associated with lifelong anhedonia and recent change of anhedonia in individuals with insomnia. Demographic and polysomnographic data from 493 individuals with insomnia selected retrospectively from the clinical database of the Erasme Hospital Sleep Laboratory were analysed. Current SI were considered present if the score in item 9 of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) was ≥1 and/or if they were highlighted during the systematic psychiatric assessment conducted on admission to the Sleep Laboratory. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the risk of current SI associated with anhedonia in individuals with insomnia. The prevalence of current SI was 21.5% in our sample of individuals with insomnia. After adjusting for major confounding factors, multivariate logistic regression analyses demonstrated that unlike lifelong anhedonia, only recent change of anhedonia was a risk factor for current SI in individuals with insomnia. In this study, we demonstrated that in individuals with insomnia, recent change of anhedonia is a risk factor for current SI, which seems to justify more systematic research and adequate therapeutic management of this condition to allow better prevention in this particular subpopulation at high-risk of suicide. • Current SI are frequent (21.5%) in subjects with insomnia. • Recent change of anhedonia is risk factor for current SI in subjects with insomnia. • Lifelong anhedonia is not risk factor for current SI in subjects with insomnia. • Adequate management of anhedonia is essential in subjects with insomnia. Suicide, a deliberate act of self-harm with the intention to die, is an emerging health concern but, unfortunately, the most under-researched subject in Pakistan, especially in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa (KPK). In this study, we aimed to identify risk factors that can be associated with suicidal behavior (SB) and to evaluate the prevailing treatment practices for therapeutic efficacy and drug-related problems (DRPs) in psychotic patients among the local population of KPK. A prospective, multicenter study was conducted for suicidal cases admitted to the study centers by randomized sampling. Socio-demographics and data on suicidal behavior were assessed using the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), socioeconomic condition by Kuppuswamy socioeconomic scale (KSES) and treatment adherence by Morisky Medication-Taking Adherence Scale (MMAS-4). Drug-related problems and the therapeutic efficacy of prevailing treatment practices were assessed at baseline and follow-up after 3 months of treatment provided. Regarding suicidality (N = 128), females reported more ideations (63.1%), while males witnessed more suicidal behavior (66.6%, p < 0.001). Suicide attempters were mostly married (55.6%, p < 0.002); highly educated (53.9%, p = 0.004); dissatisfied with their life and had a previous history (p < 0.5) of suicide attempt (SA) (20.6%), self-injurious behavior (SIB) (39.7%) and interrupted (IA) or aborted attempts (AA) (22.2%). A greater improvement was observed in patients receiving combination therapy (p = 0.001) than pharmacotherapy (p = 0.006) or psychotherapy (p = 0.183), alone. DRPs were also detected, including drug-selection problems (17.88%), dose-related problems (20.64%), potential drug–drug interactions (24.31%), adverse drug reactions (11.46%) and other problems like inadequate education and counseling (21.55%). Furthermore, it was also found that psychotic patients with suicidal ideations (SI) were significantly (p = 0.01) more adherent to the treatment as compared to those with suicidal attempts. We concluded that suicide attempters differed significantly from patients with suicidal ideations in psychotic patients and presented with peculiar characteristics regarding socio-demographic factors. A combination of therapies and adherence to the treatment provided better outcomes, and targeted interventions are warranted to address drug-related problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
• Life and help-seeking experiences regarding suicidal ideation among nursing home residents were explored. • Semi-structured interviews were conducted in 19 nursing home older adults with suicidal ideation. • Nursing home residents' suicidal ideation is associated with negative life experiences in both individual and institutional setting. • Older adults' negative attitudes toward seeking assistance and limited resort resources hinder them from finding more support or treatment. Globally, older adults, especially nursing home residents, are at a higher risk of suicide. This study examined the life of nursing home residents with suicidal ideations and their help-seeking experiences. A qualitative analysis of 19 semi-structured interviews was conducted. Results indicate that suicidal ideations among nursing home residents correlates with their negative life experiences, both personally and institutionally. In terms of their life experiences, themes included the desire for death, emotional loneliness, a state of discomfort arising from incapacity, feeling like a burden on children, and dealing with the low-quality service. Older adults' negative attitudes toward seeking assistance as well as limited resort resources and ineffective help-seeking hinder them from finding more support or treatment. This study adds to a growing body of research on late-life suicide in institutional settings, and relevant findings can serve as references in improving nursing home residents' life quality and developing suicide-prevention strategies. Abstract Background Suicidal ideations were reported in many studies among patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with current suicidal ideations among Egyptian patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A consecutive sample of 120 Egyptian OCD patients was included in the study. OCD was diagnosed using the structured clinical interview for DSM-V axis Ι disorders, clinical version (SCID-I-CV). Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) was also applied to the patients. Presence of current suicidal ideations was assessed using Scale for Suicidal Ideation (SSI). Results Twenty eight (23.3%) of the OCD patients reported presence of current suicidal ideations, religious obsessions OR = 3.53, P = 0.009, and presence of comorbid major depressive disorder OR = 1.77, P = 0.04. Conclusion Religious obsessions and comorbid major depressive disorder were found to be significant predictors for the current suicidal ideations in patients with OCD; however, religious obsessions were the strongest predictor. Religious obsessions should be evaluated and treated to decrease the risk of suicidal thoughts in Egyptian OCD patients.

- Abstract
Objective: Two-step questions to assess gender identity are recommended for optimizing care delivery for gender-diverse individuals. As gender identity fields are increasingly integrated into electronic health records, guidance is needed on how to analyze these data. The goal of this study was to assess potential approaches for analyzing 2-step gender identity questions and the impact of each on suicidal ideation.Materials and Methods: A regional Youth Risk Behavior Survey in one Northeastern school district used a 2-step question to assess gender identity. Three gender measurement strategies (GMSs) were used to operationalize gender identity, (1) combining all gender-diverse youth (GDY) into one category, (2) grouping GDY based on sex assigned at birth, and (3) categorizing GDY based on binary and nonbinary identities. Mixed-effects logistic regression was used to compare odds of suicidal ideation between gender identity categories for each GMS.Results: Of the 3010 participants, 8.3% were GDY. Subcategories of GDY had significantly higher odds (odds ratio range, 1.6-2.9) of suicidal ideation than cisgender girls regardless of GMS, while every category of GDY had significantly higher odds (odds ratio range, 2.1-5.0) of suicidal ideation than cisgender boys. Conclusions: The field of clinical informatics has an opportunity to incorporate inclusive items like the 2-step gender identity question into electronic health records to optimize care and strengthen clinical research. Analysis of the 2-step gender identity question impacts study results and interpretation. Attention to how data about GDY are captured will support for more nuanced, tailored analyses that better reflect unique experiences within this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory systemic disorder often associated with psychiatric comorbidities such as depression and anxiety. This case report describes a 25-year-old man with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type, whose suicidal ideation was worsened by a severe psoriasis flare that was induced by the initiation of lithium for psychiatric management. Lithium was switched to valproate, and treatment with secukinumab, an IL-17A inhibitor, was initiated, resulting in significant improvement in both psoriasis and mental health. This case highlights the phenomenon of drug-induced psoriasis, emphasizing the need for a high index of suspicion and careful review of past medical history. It underscores the reciprocal relationship between psoriasis and psychiatric comorbidities, advocating for a tailored approach to treating both conditions to achieve optimal outcomes., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. Background: Stimulants such as methylphenidate and atomoxetine, a nonstimulant norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, are approved for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Associations between the use of methylphenidate or atomoxetine with suicidal ideation and suicide-related behavior have been reported in the literature. The present study aimed to compare the effects of atomoxetine with that of methylphenidate on suicidal ideation and behavior in children and adolescents. Methods: Children and adolescents between 7 to 17 years of age with the diagnosis of ADHD, based on DSM-5 criteria, were included in this observational, cross sectional study. The suicidal ideation was assessed among children and adolescents who have been receiving either atomoxetine or methylphenidate for at least 12 months prior to entering the study. A Farsi version of Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation (PANSI) inventory was applied for the assessment. Differences among age groups, duration of therapy and comparison of positive and negative scores in both genders were analyzed using t-test. In addition, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to examine the differences in positive and negative scores among different age groups. Moreover, chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were performed to examine the effects of past history of drugs and other present illnesses on suicidal ideation. P-value of

There is an increasing recognition that suicidal ideation is a major public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa. We employed a case study design, taking a case study of adolescents currently under the care of Uganda Youth Development Link (UYDEL). The data analyzed were collected from 219 female and male adolescents (13–19 years) recruited through UYDEL in Kampala, Uganda. A Poisson regression model with robust variance was used to assess the risk factors associated with suicidality. The prevalence of suicidal ideation in the past 4 weeks and attempt within the past 6 months among adolescents was 30.6% (95% CI: 24.8, 38.0%) and 24.2% (95% CI: 18.7, 30.4%), respectively. The most stressful precursors of suicidal ideation or attempt included financial difficulties (59.5%), family breakdown or conflicts (37.4%), and trauma (23.1%). Suicidal ideation in the past 1 week preceding the survey was as high as 13.3% (95% CI: 9.0, 18.6%), of which 75.0% (95% CI: 55.1%, 89.3%) had a suicide plan. Prevalence of suicidal ideation in the past 4 weeks was significantly higher among respondents with moderate psychological distress [Prevalence Ratio (PRR) = 2.74; 95% CI: 0.96, 7.84] and severe psychological distress (PRR = 4.75; 95% CI: 1.72, 13.08) but lower among adolescents who knew where to obtain professional psychological care (PRR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.30, 0.87). Similarly, suicidal attempt was significantly higher among respondents with moderate psychological distress (PRR = 4.72; 95% CI: 1.01, 12.03) and severe psychological distress (PRR = 11.8; 95% CI: 4.66, 32.37), and who abuse drugs or substances (PRR = 2.13; 95% CI: 1.13, 4.01). Therefore, suicidal ideation is a major public health issue among adolescents living in poor urban settlements in Kampala, Uganda. Psychological distress due to financial difficulties, unemployment, and family breakdown are major facilitators of suicidality among adolescents in urban poor settlements in Kampala. Interventions aimed at preventing suicide among vulnerable adolescents in urban settlements in Kampala, Uganda should incorporate this unique risk factor profile.

Background and Objectives: Data on suicidal ideation, behavior and the risk factors in patients with dementia is scarce. To evaluate the prevalence of death wishes, suicidal ideation, and suicidal behavior of young (YOD) and late onset dementia (LOD) and to identify risk factors for suicidal ideation and behavior. Methods: We interviewed 157 family caregivers of patients with advanced dementia using questions from the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale to gather information about suicidal ideation and behavior before the onset of symptoms of dementia, after the onset of dementia and within 30 days prior to the interview. At the time of the interview, we also assessed disease severity, cognitive function, and other psychological, behavioral and physical symptoms of the patients as well as the caregivers' psychological well-being.Results: Forty four (28%) of the patients expressed suicidal ideation or behavior at some time after the onset of symptoms, and 14 (9%) of these within the month prior to the assessment. Two patients had attempted suicide after the onset of dementia. There were no statistically significant differences between patients with and without suicidal ideations or behavior with regards to demographics or age at onset of dementia. In patients with advanced dementia, Alzheimer's disease (rather than frontotemporal lobar degeneration), better cognitive function, more severe psychological, behavioral, and physical symptoms, and a reduced quality of life were associated with the expression of suicidal ideation. Conclusions: According to caregivers' reports, majority of patients with dementia did not express suicidal ideation or show suicidal behavior. Patients who expressed suicidal ideation during early stages of dementia often stopped expressing them in advanced stages. It remains unclear if this was due to reduced communication abilities, a reduction of disease awareness, and/ or an adjustment to their situation.

OBJECTIVE To explore the association of different variables and the role of Vortioxetine in managing suicidal ideation in patients suffering from depression in Pakistan. STUDY DESIGN This is a secondary-analysis of a large, multi-centre, noninterventional, prospective longitudinal study with patients who were prescribed Vortioxetine. PLACE AND DURATION OF THE STUDY The main study was conducted in 16 Psychiatry outpatient clinics in eight cities across Pakistan. The period of study was August 2019 to June 2020. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 498 depressed patients aged 18- 65 years participated in the study. Suicidal ideation was measured using item number 9 of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Participants were assessed at baseline, 1 week, 1-month and 3-month after treatment initiation. RESULTS There was statistically significant reduction in reporting of suicidal ideation from 80% at baseline to 13% at outcome assessment. There was significant positive correlation between suicidal ideation and cognitive dysfunction on Perceived Deficits Questionnaire (PDQ) and suicidal ideation and depression scores on PHQ-9. There was a statistically significant difference between those who reported suicidal ideation and those who did not report suicidal ideation on the clinical global impression-severity scale both at baseline and at 3-month outcome assessment. CONCLUSION Suicidal ideation is common in depressed patients and this study demonstrated that suicidal ideation was reduced significantly with Vortioxetine treatment. Future research is warranted to further confirm the findings with controlled groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim of the Study: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors for suicidal ideations (SIs) and suicidal attempts (SAs) among elderly patients with depression, seeking treatment in psychiatric setups. Methodology: The study sample comprised 488 elderly patients (age ≥60 years) with depression recruited across eight centers. These patients were evaluated on the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale-30, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-15 Scale, UCLA Loneliness Scale, Revised Social Connectedness Scale, and Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale. Results: “Wish to die” was present in one-fifth (21.7%) and about one-fourth (26.6%) of the study samples at the time of assessment and in the lifetime, respectively. Overall, one-fourth (25.8%; n = 126) of the participants had SIs at the time of assessment and two-fifths (41.5%; n = 203) had SIs in the lifetime. Overall, about one-tenth (9.2%) of the participants made an SA just before assessment and one-sixth (16.6%) had at least one SA in the lifetime. Compared to those with no SIs in the lifetime, those with current and lifetime SIs had lower age of onset and longer duration of illness, less often had a comorbid physical illness, more often had recurrent depressive disorder, had significantly higher anxiety as assessed on GAD-7 scale, and had significantly higher prevalence of loneliness and significantly higher prevalence of cognitive deficits. When those with any current and lifetime SAs and those with no lifetime SAs were compared, those with SAs had longer duration of current treatment and more often had comorbid physical illness and significantly higher cognitive deficits. Conclusions: The present study suggests that about one-fourth (25.8%) of the elderly with depression have SIs at the time of assessment and about two-fifths (41.5%) have lifetime SIs. About one-sixth of the elderly patients with depression make at least one SA in the lifetime and about one-tenth attempt suicide in recent past. In terms of risk factors for SIs and SAs, the present study suggests that the presence of comorbid anxiety, loneliness, and cognitive deficits possibly predispose the elderly to suicidal behaviors.

Introduction Suicidogenic effects COVID-19 pandemic are expected to reveal themselves not immediately, but within a longer period. Objectives To evaluate the prevalence of suicidal tendencies in university students during the COVID-19 outbreak and specify the psychosocial characteristics of the students with a low anti-suicidal barrier to mitigate their suicide risks. Methods The research was done via an on-line survey, which covered 536 students of both sexes (aged 21.46±2.95), who studied in Russian universities and who filled in a structured questionnaire during their distance learning due to COVID-19 outbreak. Results We revealed that 11.38% of the respondents (57.47% of whom are males) with a low anti-suicidal barrier showed suicidal tendencies by allowing the possibility of committing a suicide in a certain situation. Among them were more Russian students than international ones (p=.0272). They also certainly exceeded the students with the developed anti-suicidal barrier in taking alcohol (p=.0126), in underestimating their own health (p=.0053), in expressing happiness (p=.0001), and in degree of religious belief (p=.0001). They perceived the situation associated with the COVID-19 outbreak with a more strongly manifested anxiety due to the fear of their own infection with coronavirus (p=0.0347). At the same time, they acted less responsibly in following personal restrictive measures aimed to reduce the risk of infection (p=.0002). Conclusions Students with suicidal tendencies during the COVID-19 outbreak present a risk group in COVID-19 spread and infection. The pandemic can intensify anti-vital sufferings and enhance the risk of committing suicide in individuals with suicidal tendencies, which should be taken into account in prevention programs.

The association of cannabis use and suicidal ideations in adolescents and young adults has been inconsistent. This discrepancy may reflect differences in controlled confounders but also the lack of consideration of the relationships between confounders. In particular, few studies have examined whether controlled variables mediated rather than confounded the relationship between cannabis use and suicide. Participants were 1034 college students who completed questionnaires assessing cannabis use and symptoms of cannabis use disorder (CUD), suicidal ideation, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and borderline personality traits. The dichotomic variable cannabis use versus non-use was not a significant independent predictor of suicidal ideation. Among cannabis users, the association between symptoms of CUD and suicidal ideation was significant before adjustment for confounding variables. The loss of significance of this association after control for confounders reflected the mediating effects of depressive symptoms and borderline traits on the relationship between symptoms of CUD and suicidal ideation.
