Introduction: Fragile X syndrome is an inherited X-linked disorder associated with intellectual disabilities that begin in childhood and last a lifetime. The symptoms overlap with autism spectrum disorder, and the syndrome predominantly affects males. Consequently, FXS research tends to favor analysis of social behaviors in males, leaving a gap in our understanding of other behavioral traits, especially in females. Methods: We used a mouse model of FXS to analyze developmental, behavioral, neurochemical, and transcriptomic profiles in males and females. Results: Our behavioral assays demonstrated locomotor hyperactivity, motor impulsivity, increased "approach" behavior in an approach-avoidance assay, and deficits in nest building behavior. RNA sequencing of the ventral striatum unveiled expression changes associated with neurotransmission as well as motivation and substance use pathways. Sex differences were identified in nest building behavior, striatal neurotransmitter content, and ventral striatal gene expression. Background: Sonder's In-Home Withdrawal Service (IHWS) has been providing a unique home-based, multidisciplinary, wraparound withdrawal option for people with low-to-moderate levels of substance dependence since September 2019. This paper provides an evaluation of the service's overall impact on reducing substance use among clients through the delivery of this innovative service model. The evaluation explores the acceptability and feasibility of the service via client, stakeholder, and staff perspectives. Methods: A mixed-method design was used to evaluate the IHWS. Descriptive analysis of quantitative data was conducted using clinical assessments from client records and online feedback surveys. Qualitative data from client, staff, and stakeholder feedback surveys were analysed thematically. Results: Overall, 1166 referrals were received over the lifespan of the service, and a data set of 96 clients was included in the analysis. Self-reported measures showed that most clients decreased their substance use (89%), improved their psychological health status (75%), improved their physical health (65%), improved their quality of life (69%), and improved their understanding and ability to manage their alcohol and other drugs (AOD) use (84%). Client feedback suggests the service is providing a unique option for AOD withdrawal. Stakeholders commend the service's home-based setting, multidisciplinary and person-centred approach to care, and recommended expansion of the service to increase access for clients and reduce demand on inpatient settings. Conclusions: The IHWS is having a significant impact in reducing substance use and highlights the need for increased access to holistic approaches to withdrawal. This includes pre- and post-withdrawal support and the inclusion of multidisciplinary teams, and engaging lived experience practitioners. A focus on funding primary-based services is required to meet the rising costs of tertiary-based care and to better meet the needs of consumers. Individuals with low-to-moderate levels of substance dependence require targeted services to safely manage their withdrawal. This paper evaluates a holistic approach to withdrawal that broadens the common medicalised approach through pre- and post-withdrawal stages of care and support from a multidisciplinary team including lived experience practitioners. The service reduces levels of substance use while also improving overall quality of life, demonstrating the need for more withdrawal services to consider the inclusion of holistic approaches to substance dependence support. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are frequently subjected to traumatic events, making them vulnerable to using substances. This study explores predictors and types of substances used by IDPs, prevalence of substance dependence, and reasons for substance use. Cross-sectional survey data were obtained from 520 IDPs living in camps located in Borno State, Nigeria. The Drug Use Disorders Identification Test (DUDIT) was adapted and administered to the participants. IBM SPSS was used to conduct univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses. More than half (66.2%, n = 344) of the survey participants used at least one substance while a third of them (31.2%, n = 162) used more than one substance. About one in ten respondents met the instrument cut-off for dependence. The most popular substance used was Kolanut (46.5%, n = 242). Popular reasons for substance use were availability of substance, influence from others, and having a disease condition. Education, marital status, employment, and number of substances used were significantly associated with substance dependence. A high prevalence of substance use was found among the IDPs. Substance dependence is a biopsychosocial, multidimensional and multifactorial phenomenon. The family is a dynamic and multifaceted system of ideas, emotions and behaviors. The elements of the family system influence and feed off each other, and changes within the family have an impact both individually and collectively as the family goes through its life cycle. The results of most research studies pointed out that: 1) the phenomenon of substance dependence is not associated with a specific type of family i.e. with a stable pathognomonic profile 2) drug-dependent personalities can arise in different types of family structure 3) certain characteristics of family structure, in general, seem to be common to the functioning of families of addicted persons 4) in the family of substance-dependent persons the characteristics that are found in many other families 5) there is a high incidence of mental disorders in the family of substance abusers and 6) therapeutic intervention in the family is imperative, but must be accompanied by other interventions. Substance dependence seriously affects public health and needs to be addressed in a variety of ways. It has become clear that intervention in the family becomes necessary in order to change the behavior of the user, to change the attitudes of other family members and to modify the overall family dynamics. Health literacy comprises an individual's ability to adequately access, understand and utilise health information, enabling effective navigation of the healthcare system. Low health literacy is a problem for people living with substance use disorders (SUDs). This study aims to examine whether health literacy changes for people discharged from specialist SUD treatment services. Two hundred thirty-one people recruited from residential SUD treatment services across New South Wales, Australia, completed a questionnaire upon entry into the service and again at 6 months post-treatment. Treatment outcomes were also measured. Three health literacy profiles were identified: lowest (n = 52, 22.5%), moderate (n = 111, 48.1%) and highest health literacy (n = 68, 29.4%). Lowest and moderate profiles showed improved health literacy at 6 months. However, the lowest profile still had significantly lower health literacy, quality of life and higher levels of psychological distress compared with participants in the highest profile at 6 months. People within the lowest health literacy profile improved, although they continued to experience lower health literacy and some poorer treatment outcomes. Health literacy interventions tailored for people within lowest health literacy profiles should be implemented and assessed for effectiveness within specialist SUD treatment services. INTRODUCTION: There are growing concerns about commonly inflated effect sizes in small neuroimaging studies, yet no study has addressed recalibrating effect size estimates for small samples. To tackle this issue, we propose a hierarchical Bayesian model to adjust the magnitude of single-study effect sizes while incorporating a tailored estimation of sampling variance. METHODS: We estimated the effect sizes of case-control differences on brain structural features between individuals who were dependent on alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, methamphetamine, or cannabis and non-dependent participants for 21 individual studies (Total cases: 903; Total controls: 996). Then, the study-specific effect sizes were modeled using a hierarchical Bayesian approach in which the parameters of the study-specific effect size distributions were sampled from a higher-order overarching distribution. The posterior distribution of the overarching and study-specific parameters was approximated using the Gibbs sampling method. RESULTS: The results showed shrinkage of the posterior distribution of the study-specific estimates toward the overarching estimates given the original effect sizes observed in individual studies. Differences between the original effect sizes (i.e., Cohens d) and the point estimate of the posterior distribution ranged from 0 to 0.97. The magnitude of adjustment was negatively correlated with the sample size (r = -0.27, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with empirically estimated sampling variance (r = 0.40, p < 0.001), suggesting studies with smaller samples and larger sampling variance tended to have greater adjustments. DISCUSSION: Our findings demonstrate the utility of the hierarchical Bayesian model in recalibrating single-study effect sizes using information from similar studies. This suggests that Bayesian utilization of existing knowledge can be an effective alternative approach to improve the effect size estimation in individual studies, particularly for those with smaller samples.

Importance: More than 109,000 Americans died of drug overdose in 2022, with 81,231 overdose deaths involving opioids. Methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone are the most widely used medications for opioid use disorders (MOUD) and the most effective intervention for preventing overdose deaths. However, there is a concern that methadone results in long QT syndrome, which increases the risk for fatal cardiac arrythmias. Currently few studies have systematically evaluated both the short‐term and long‐term differences in cardiac and mortality outcomes between MOUD. Objectives: To compare the risks of cardiac arrythmias, long QT syndrome and overall mortality between patients with opioid use disorders (OUD) who were prescribed methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone. Design, Setting, and Participants: Retrospective cohort study based on a multicenter and nationwide database of electronic health records (EHRs) in the United States. The study population was comprised of 144,141 patients who had medical encounters for OUD in 2016‐2022, were prescribed MOUD within 1 month following a medical encounter for OUD diagnosis and had no diagnosis of cardiac arrythmias or long QT syndrome before any MOUD prescription. The study population was divided into three cohorts: (1) Methadone cohort (n = 40,938)—who were only prescribed methadone. (2) Buprenorphine cohort (n = 80,055)—who were only prescribed buprenorphine. (3) Naltrexone cohort (n = 5,738)—who were only prescribed naltrexone. Exposures: methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone. Main Outcomes and Measures: Cardiac arrythmias, long QT syndrome, and death. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of outcomes at six different follow‐up time frames (1‐month, 3‐month, 6‐month, 1‐year, 3‐year, and 5‐year) by comparing propensity‐score matched cohorts using Kaplan‐Meier survival analysis. Results: Patients with OUD who were prescribed methadone had significantly higher risks of cardiac arrhythmias, long QT syndrome and death compared with propensity‐score matched patients with OUD who were prescribed buprenorphine or naltrexone. For the 1‐month follow‐up, the overall risk for cardiac arrythmias was 1.03% in the Methadone cohort, higher than the 0.87% in the matched Buprenorphine cohort (HR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.04−1.39); The overall risk for long QT syndrome was 0.35% in the Methadone cohort, higher than the 0.15% in the matched Buprenorphine cohort (HR: 2.40, 95% CI: 1.75−3.28); The overall mortality was 0.59% in the Methadone cohort, higher than the 0.41% in the matched Buprenorphine cohort (HR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.21−1.81). The increased risk persisted for 5 years: cardiac arrhythmias (HR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.23−1.38), long QT syndrome (HR: 3.14, 95% CI: 2.76−3.58), death (HR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.41−1.59). Conclusions and Relevance: Methadone was associated with a significantly higher risk for cardiac and mortality outcomes than buprenorphine and naltrexone. These findings are relevant to the development of guidelines for medication selection when initiating MOUD treatment and inform future medication development for OUD that minimizes risks while maximizing benefits. Background: The treatment gap for people with common mental disorders is large, estimated to be 75–95% in India; the reasons are multi-factorial. It was found that 89% of the primary health centers are not providing mental health care services. Technology like the electronic-mental Health Global Action Program-Intervention Guide (e-mhGAP-IG) is necessary to fill this gap, which in turn helps to attain one of the aims of National Mental Health Program-1982. Hence, the study is planned to understand the feasibility and adaptability of WHO’s e-mhGAP-IG by the primary health workers in the delivery of mental health care for child and adolescent mental/behavioral disorders (CMH) and substance use disorders (SUB). Methods: It is an open-label randomized control trial planned to conduct at primary healthcare centers, Chittoor district. Primary health care staff working at PHCs/Sub-centers having one year experience, and being able to handle smart phones will be included in the study. Data will be collected using a self-structured case report form (CRF) and analyzed by applying per protocol analysis using JAMOVI software. The cost of intervention and the impact on disease outcomes will be taken concurrently to estimate the cost-effectiveness of the intervention. Regression analysis was carried out to examine the association between certain socio-demographic characteristics and substance use among internally displaced persons (IDPs). Using an adapted version of the Drug Use Disorder Identification Test (DUDIT) instrument, cross-sectional survey data were obtained from 520 IDPs living in three camps located in Maiduguri, Borno state of Nigeria. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences software version 21.0. Specifically, this article provides data about the participants’ demographic characteristics, the types of substances they use, reasons for using such substances, and the prevalence of substance use. This dataset can offer valuable multivariate information for future research agendas in similar, or closely related study populations. This cross-sectional dataset is also valuable for policymakers who are seeking ways to intervene in the substance use problem, as well as other associated social vices, affecting the vulnerable population of IDPs.

Brain asymmetry reflects left-right hemispheric differentiation, which is a quantitative brain phenotype that develops with age and can vary with psychiatric diagnoses. Previous studies have shown that substance dependence is associated with altered brain structure and function. However, it is unknown whether structural brain asymmetries are different in individuals with substance dependence compared with nondependent participants. Here, a mega-analysis was performed using a collection of 22 structural brain MRI datasets from the ENIGMA Addiction Working Group. Structural asymmetries of cortical and subcortical regions were compared between individuals who were dependent on alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, methamphetamine, or cannabis (n = 1,796) and nondependent participants (n = 996). Substance-general and substance-specific effects on structural asymmetry were examined using separate models. We found that substance dependence was significantly associated with differences in volume asymmetry of the nucleus accumbens (NAcc; less rightward; Cohen's d = 0.15). This effect was driven by differences from controls in individuals with alcohol dependence (less rightward; Cohen's d = 0.10) and nicotine dependence (less rightward; Cohen's d = 0.11). These findings suggest that disrupted structural asymmetry in the NAcc may be a characteristic of substance dependence.

Abstract Introduction The Spanish Yale Food Addiction Scale for Children (S-YFAS-C) scale is the first tool adapted to Spanish to evaluate food addiction (FA) in the paediatric population. The aim of this study is to preliminarily evaluate the degree of FA in a non-clinical pilot paediatric population. Material and methods A transversal observational study was performed on a convenience sample comprised of boys and girls aged 9 to 12 (4th to 6th year primary school). The main outcome measures were evaluation of FA (S-YFAS-C scale), child feeding attitudes (ChEAT scale) and evaluation of body image (CDRS scale). Moreover, sociodemographic and anthropometric data were collected. A descriptive and bivariate analysis of the main characteristics of subjects and outcome measures was performed. Results A total of 21 boys and 24 girls were preliminarily evaluated and the minimum and maximum values obtained were for age (9.48–12.33), weight in kilograms (26.6–64.5), height in centimetres (131–163), BMI (14.2–27.9) and BMI Z-score (−1.36–2.66). The average number of FA symptoms measured with the S-YFAS-C scale is 1.67 ± 1.45 (range 0–7). A total of 20% of the sample shows three or more symptoms for FA, risk of developing a food disorder and distortion of the body image. Moreover, statistically significant differences were observed between desired body image in boys and girls (P = 0.001). Conclusions The S-YFAS-C scale enables evaluating food addiction in Spanish-speaking boys and girls. The data obtained in regard to quantifying symptoms are similar compared to the original scale (S-YFAS-C: 1.67 ± 1.45 vs. YFAS-C: 2 ± 1.81). The option to score the counting of symptoms is the most sensitive measure to evaluate subclinical food behaviours.

The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare psychodynamic with other treatments in studies of substance addiction. The literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Web of Science, Cohcrane library, SCOPUS, and Onesearch databases. All studies comparing psychodynamic therapy with other types of psychological interventions for Substance Use Disorder were eligible. Three outcomes were considered to compare intervention performance: substance use, participation in treatment and other symptomatic conditions (OSCs). Hedges' G was used to measure effect size. The Revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized trials was used to assess quality of evidence and possible bias, Egger regression analyses for publication bias, and Q and I-square statistics were used to assess heterogeneity. The alcohol group showed no differences between treatments on the three outcomes. The cocaine group showed no significant differences in the two outcomes, while for OSCs, available data was insufficient. The opioids group showed small but significant differences regarding participation in favor of non-psychodynamic interventions and no significant results for other outcomes. Based on the three measures of recovery considered in this meta-analysis, psychodynamic interventions were shown to be as effective as other psychological treatments in treating substance dependence and proved to be an empirically-supported treatment for the above addictions. Background: According to the World Health Organization, substance dependence is persistent or sporadic drug use inconsistent with or unrelated to acceptable medical practice. Substance dependence is showing a rising trend all over the world, and these disorders are rapidly recognized throughout in India. It is considered as a major cause of preventable ill health, social harm, and premature death throughout the population. As compared to the general population, those with substance use disorders are 5.3% more likely to die from suicide. There are several distal or predisposing risk factors associated with suicidal behavior such as personality traits, childhood trauma, and family history of suicide. Therefore, the present study is to compare and examine the distal factors of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicidal attempt (SA) with patients without SI and SA (WS) in patients with substance dependence. Materials and Methods: This was a cross‑sectional observational study conducted at the inpatient departments of Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi. Purposive sampling of sixty patients was done to further divide them into Group 1 (SI), Group 2 (SA), and Group 3 (WS). The sample was purposively collected to include sixty patients with substance dependence. They were screened by using the Addiction Severity Index scale, and Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSSI), Suicide Intent Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and the NEO five‑factor inventory‑3 (NEO‑FFI‑3) were administered to assess SI, SA, childhood trauma and personality traits, respectively. Results: The present study reveals that all the personality domains except conscientiousness on NEO‑FFI 3 may have importance in differentiating the substance‑dependent patients with SI/SA from WS patients. Only physical and emotional abuse on CTQ may be a significant distal factor for suicidal thoughts and behavior, whereas physical abuse may have more significance for SAs in substance dependence patients. Family history of suicide was not significant in patients with SI/SA. Conclusions: These findings may assist in formulation of therapeutic strategies for suicidal patients of substance dependence. Objective: The present investigation aimed to explore the efficacy of schema therapy in enhancing the dimensions of interpersonal relationships among individuals undergoing treatment for drug addiction in the city of Sirjan (Iran). Methods: The research design employed was a semi-experimental approach, incorporating both control and experimental groups. The target population consisted of all drug addicts receiving treatment in Sirjan, while the sample size comprised 30 individuals, selected through the convenience sampling method and divided into two experimental groups (15 individuals each) and a control group (15 individuals). The experimental groups underwent schema therapy for a duration of 8 sessions, while data were collected using an interpersonal relationship questionnaire. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis of covariance using SPSS software version 26. Results: The findings of the data analysis revealed that the treatment protocol effectively influenced interpersonal relationships and their various dimensions, leading to improvement. Conclusions: According to our research outcomes, the implementation of schema therapy holds significant importance in the enhancement of interpersonal relationships dimensions throughout the duration of the therapeutic process for individuals receiving treatment for substance abuse. Abstract Background Child laborers are often defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development. Child laborers are one of the most vulnerable groups in domestic violence. Domestic violence severely affects the physical and mental health, and consequently affects substance dependence and resilience to suicide of these children. Accordingly, it is essential to examine domestic violence, substance dependence, and suicidal ideation in working children. Objectives the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between exposure to domestic violence and substance dependence and suicide resilience on the other among child laborers in Iran. Methods This study employed cross-sectional research. 600 child laborers were selected via convenience and snow ball sampling from one rehabilitation and welfare center and three charity organization societies in the west of Iran, from January to August 2022. They completed questionnaires. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 22 and with using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and ANOVA, independent t-test and the multiple linear regression model with a backward strategy. While imaging studies have demonstrated volumetric differences in subcortical structures associated with dependence on various abused substances, findings to date have not been wholly consistent. Moreover, most studies have not compared brain morphology across those dependent on different substances of abuse to identify substance-specific and substance-general dependence effects. By pooling large multinational datasets from 33 imaging sites, this study examined subcortical surface morphology in 1628 nondependent controls and 2277 individuals with dependence on alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, methamphetamine, and/or cannabis. Subcortical structures were defined by FreeSurfer segmentation and converted to a mesh surface to extract two vertex-level metrics-the radial distance (RD) of the structure surface from a medial curve and the log of the Jacobian determinant (JD)-that, respectively, describe local thickness and surface area dilation/contraction. Mega-analyses were performed on measures of RD and JD to test for the main effect of substance dependence, controlling for age, sex, intracranial volume, and imaging site. Widespread differences between dependent users and nondependent controls were found across subcortical structures, driven primarily by users dependent on alcohol. Alcohol dependence was associated with localized lower RD and JD across most structures, with the strongest effects in the hippocampus, thalamus, putamen, and amygdala. Meanwhile, nicotine use was associated with greater RD and JD relative to nonsmokers in multiple regions, with the strongest effects in the bilateral hippocampus and right nucleus accumbens. By demonstrating subcortical morphological differences unique to alcohol and nicotine use, rather than dependence across all substances, results suggest substance-specific relationships with subcortical brain structures.

Background: Describe the epidemiology and characteristics of patients with a history of mental illness undergoing otolaryngologic procedures. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis utilizing the Nationwide Readmissions Database, 2010 to 2015. The study sample included adult (≥18 years) patients undergoing otolaryngologic procedures. Results: A total of 146 182 patients were included, 18.3% with mental illness history. The prevalence of patients who required otolaryngologic surgeries with history of mental illness increased significantly from 14.9% in 2010 to 25.0% in 2015 (P <.001). Mental illness diagnoses included: depression (6.9%), anxiety (5.8%), alcohol dependence (4.2%), substance dependence (2.9%), bipolar disorder (1.4%), memory disorders (1.2%), delusional disorders (0.6%), self-harm (0.1%). Patients with a history of mental illness were more likely to be <65 years, female, and have multiple comorbidities (P <.05 each). Patients with history of mental illness had a higher risk of complications [OR:1.59, 95% CI:1.50,1.69, P <.001]. Conclusions: Patients with a history of mental illness are increasingly encountered in otolaryngology service. This study provides an epidemiological perspective that warrants increasing clinical investigation of this subpopulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The Spanish Yale Food Addiction Scale for Children (S-YFAS-C) scale is the first tool adapted to Spanish to evaluate food addiction (FA) in the paediatric population. The aim of this study is to preliminarily evaluate the degree of FA in a non-clinical pilot paediatric population. Material and methods: A transversal observational study was performed on a convenience sample comprised of boys and girls aged 9 to 12 (4th to 6th year primary school). The main outcome measures were evaluation of FA (S-YFAS-C scale), child feeding attitudes (ChEAT scale) and evaluation of body image (CDRS scale). Moreover, sociodemographic and anthropometric data were collected. A descriptive and bivariate analysis of the main characteristics of subjects and outcome measures was performed. Results: A total of 21 boys and 24 girls were preliminarily evaluated and the minimum and maximum values obtained were for age (9.48–12.33), weight in kilograms (26.6–64.5), height in centimetres (131–163), BMI (14.2–27.9) and BMI Z-score (−1.36–2.66). The average number of FA symptoms measured with the S-YFAS-C scale is 1.67 ± 1.45 (range 0–7). A total of 20% of the sample shows three or more symptoms for FA, risk of developing a food disorder and distortion of the body image. Moreover, statistically significant differences were observed between desired body image in boys and girls (P = 0.001). Conclusions: The S-YFAS-C scale enables evaluating food addiction in Spanish-speaking boys and girls. The data obtained in regard to quantifying symptoms are similar compared to the original scale (S-YFAS-C: 1.67 ± 1.45 vs. YFAS-C: 2 ± 1.81). The option to score the counting of symptoms is the most sensitive measure to evaluate subclinical food behaviours. Background: According to the World Health Organization, substance dependence is persistent or sporadic drug use inconsistent with or unrelated to acceptable medical practice. Substance dependence is showing a rising trend all over the world, and these disorders are rapidly recognized throughout in India. It is considered as a major cause of preventable ill health, social harm, and premature death throughout the population. As compared to the general population, those with substance use disorders are 5.3% more likely to die from suicide. There are several distal or predisposing risk factors associated with suicidal behavior such as personality traits, childhood trauma, and family history of suicide. Therefore, the present study is to compare and examine the distal factors of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicidal attempt (SA) with patients without SI and SA (WS) in patients with substance dependence. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study conducted at the inpatient departments of Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi. Purposive sampling of sixty patients was done to further divide them into Group 1 (SI), Group 2 (SA), and Group 3 (WS). The sample was purposively collected to include sixty patients with substance dependence. They were screened by using the Addiction Severity Index scale, and Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (BSSI), Suicide Intent Scale, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and the NEO five-factor inventory-3 (NEO-FFI-3) were administered to assess SI, SA, childhood trauma and personality traits, respectively. Results: The present study reveals that all the personality domains except conscientiousness on NEO-FFI 3 may have importance in differentiating the substance-dependent patients with SI/SA from WS patients. Only physical and emotional abuse on CTQ may be a significant distal factor for suicidal thoughts and behavior, whereas physical abuse may have more significance for SAs in substance dependence patients. Family history of suicide was not significant in patients with SI/SA. Conclusions: These findings may assist in formulation of therapeutic strategies for suicidal patients of substance dependence.

Background: Temperament is a relatively stable individual characteristic. Temperament predicts many consequential outcomes throughout life. Different dimensions of temperament lead to different patterns of responses to external stimuli. Dimensions such as activity level and negative emotionality are related to risk-promoting behavior like substance use in adolescents. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 35 adolescents in the age group of 10–17 years. We included adolescents attending outpatient clinics and inpatient services who were diagnosed with mental disorders due to substance use according to ICD-10 diagnostic criteria. We also included 35 healthy controls. All study participants in the case and control groups were assessed using the Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire-Revised (EATQ-R) scale. Results: When temperament was assessed using the EATQ-R, the mean scores were highest for frustration, aggression, surgency, and depressed mood, but were lowest for shyness in the study group. While comparing temperament between the study group and the control group, significant differences were found between activation control (p < 0.05), aggression (p < 0.001), attention (p < 0.001), depressed mood (p < 0.05), fear (p < 0.001), inhibitory control (p < 0.001), shyness (p < 0.001), and surgency (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Temperament plays a significant rôle in adolescent substance use. Person-specific treatment can be designed to provide better care and management of patients in taking temperament into account.

Substance addiction, which includes tobacco smo­king, alcohol consumption and using of illicit drugs, are indirectly or directly responsible for the number of annual deaths worldwide, which is higher than that of due to cancer and is considered to be the cause of one fifth of all deaths in the world. Treatment possibilities very often are limited and not sufficient, relapses are common. Ways of appearing of substance addiction are complex and multidirectional, and include the differences in molecular and genetical expressions, altered brain sensitivities to stimuli, which are connected to rewarding and stress, and behavioural features, which include admittance of the risks, social isolation and/or stress dysregulation. Some countries perform regular cross-sectional population studies of illegal drug using and associated disorders. Article describes own clinical observation of a rare case of saving lower extremity after ligation of main trunks of the femoral artery and vein as a consequence of collateral circulation in a drug addict on the background of severe anemia. We consider the materials of this case to be demonstrative for discussion and widely use them during practical classes in both the state and English languages at the undergraduate and postgraduate stages of training general practitioners — family physicians.

Rho GTPases family are considered to be molecular switches that regulate various cellular processes, including cytoskeleton remodeling, cell polarity, synaptic development and maintenance. Accumulating evidence shows that Rho GTPases are involved in neuronal development and brain diseases, including substance dependence. However, the functions of Rho GTPases in substance dependence are divergent and cerebral nuclei-dependent. Thereby, comprehensive integration of their roles and correlated mechanisms are urgently needed. In this review, the molecular functions and regulatory mechanisms of Rho GTPases and their regulators such as GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs) and guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) in substance dependence have been reviewed, and this is of great significance for understanding their spatiotemporal roles in addictions induced by different addictive substances and in different stages of substance dependence. Background: Child laborers are often defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development. Child laborers are one of the most vulnerable groups in domestic violence. Domestic violence severely affects the physical and mental health, and consequently affects substance dependence and resilience to suicide of these children. Accordingly, it is essential to examine domestic violence, substance dependence, and suicidal ideation in working children. Objectives: the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between exposure to domestic violence and substance dependence and suicide resilience on the other among child laborers in Iran. Methods: This study employed cross-sectional research. 600 child laborers were selected via convenience and snow ball sampling from one rehabilitation and welfare center and three charity organization societies in the west of Iran, from January to August 2022. They completed questionnaires. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 22 and with using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and ANOVA, independent t-test and the multiple linear regression model with a backward strategy. Results: Findings showed that exposure to domestic violence has a strong and direct correlation with substance dependence (r = 0.94, p < 0.001) and strong and indirect correlation with suicide resilience (r =- 0.91, p < 0.001). Also substance dependence has a strong and direct correlation with suicide resilience (r = -0.87, p < 0.001) in child laborers. Variables of substance dependence, suicide resilience, gender, guardian's disease status, living status and age can predict 76.51% of the variance in domestic violence in these children. Conclusion: Child laborers experience a lot of domestic violence, which severely affects their suicide resilience and substance dependence in them. Therefore, there is an urgent need for systematic support programs with content (teaching self-care behaviors, stress management, avoiding tense and violent environments) in order to support of these children and reduce domestic violence against them and subsequently reduce substance improve abuse resilience to suicide in these children. While research suggests that the therapeutic alliance is important in predicting outcomes of psychotherapy, relatively little is known about the development of the alliance or the moment-to-moment components of the relationship and how they combine to create an alliance, which may represent a serious limitation in existing methods of measurement. Language style matching (LSM), or the degree to which unconscious aspects of an interactional partners language mimic that of the other partner, is a promising, unobtrusive measure of interaction quality that could provide novel insight into the therapist-client alliance. In this article, we present a theoretical argument regarding the trajectory of therapist-client LSM across therapy sessions, as well as potential precursors and consequences of LSM. We then report on a pilot test of our hypotheses that examined how LSM, clients relational histories, and clients symptoms were associated within a therapeutic context. Using a small sample of substance dependent mothers (N = 7, 100% Caucasian women) enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of psychodynamic psychotherapy lasting 12 sessions, we examined client and therapist LSM across 4 of the 12 sessions. We found that, on average, LSM decreases over the course of treatment. Furthermore, greater client interpersonal problems prospectively predict lower early LSM in therapist-client dyads, which in turn predicts greater posttreatment psychiatric distress. Results generate questions for future research and support further investigations of LSM as one index of the quality of interactions between therapist and client.
