Digital image correlation (DIC) for displacement and strain measurement has flourished in recent years. There are integer pixel and subpixel matching steps to extract displacement from a series of images in the DIC approach, and identification accuracy mainly depends on the latter step. A subpixel displacement matching method, named the double-precision gradient-based algorithm (DPG), is proposed in this study. After, the integer pixel displacement is identified using the coarse-fine search algorithm. In order to improve the accuracy and anti-noise capability in the subpixel extraction step, the traditional gradient-based method is used to analyze the data on the speckle patterns using the computer, and the influence of noise is considered. These two nearest integer pixels in one direction are both utilized as an interpolation center. Then, two subpixel displacements are extracted by the five-point bicubic spline interpolation algorithm using these two interpolation centers. A novel combination coefficient considering contaminated noises is presented to merge these two subpixel displacements to obtain the final identification displacement. Results from a simulated speckle pattern and a painted beam bending test show that the accuracy of the proposed method can be improved by four times that of the traditional gradient-based method that reaches the same high accuracy as the Newton–Raphson method. The accuracy of the proposed method efficiently reaches at 92.67%, higher than the Newton-Raphon method, and it has better anti-noise performance and stability.

Automatic fine registration of multisensor images plays an essential role in many remote sensing applications. However, it is always a challenging task due to significant radiometric and textural differences. In this paper, an enhanced subpixel phase correlation method is proposed, which embeds phase congruency-based structural representation, L1-norm-based rank-one matrix approximation with adaptive masking, and stable robust model fitting into the conventional calculation framework in the frequency domain. The aim is to improve the accuracy and robustness of subpixel translation estimation in practical cases. In addition, template matching using the enhanced subpixel phase correlation is integrated to realize reliable fine registration, which is able to extract a sufficient number of well-distributed and high-accuracy tie points and reduce the local misalignment for coarsely coregistered multisensor remote sensing images. Experiments undertaken with images from different satellites and sensors were carried out in two parts: tie point matching and fine registration. The results of qualitative analysis and quantitative comparison with the state-of-the-art area-based and feature-based matching methods demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed method for multisensor matching and registration.

Compared with the current mainstream algorithm, the proposed method makes the physical meaning of correlation matching clearer, so that the correlation function can be defined according to the actual lighting environment, and correlation matching can be more accurate. In this letter, an improved phase correlation (PC) method based on 2-D plane fitting and the maximum kernel density estimator (MKDE) is proposed, which combines the idea of Stone's method and robust estimator MKDE. The proposed PC method first utilizes a vector filter to minimize the noise errors of the phase angle matrix and then unwraps the filtered phase angle matrix by the use of the minimum cost network flow unwrapping algorithm. Afterward, the unwrapped phase angle matrix is robustly fitted via MKDE, and the slope coefficients of the 2-D plane indicate the subpixel shifts between images. The experiments revealed that the improved method can effectively avoid the impact of outliers on the phase angle matrix during the plane fitting and is robust to aliasing and noise. The matching accuracy can reach 1/50th of a pixel using simulated data. The real image sequence tracking experiment was also undertaken to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PC method with a registration accuracy of root-mean-square error better than 0.1 pixels.
