Submarine fan reservoirs are important accumulation zones for oil, gas, and natural gas hydrates, offering significant potential for hydrocarbon exploration. During the deposition period of the Sanya Formation in the southern part of the Changchang Sag of the Qiongdongnan Basin, a large submarine fan developed. However, the internal structure, source-sink system, and formation mechanism of this fan remain poorly understood, posing significant challenges to exploration in this area. This paper examines the source-to-sink sedimentary processes and deposition of submarine fans, using the Changchang Sag, in the Qiongdongnan Basin in the Northern South China Sea, as an example, which will provide valuable general guidance for deep water oil and gas exploration. Based on the theories of seismic stratigraphy and seismic sedimentology, this paper utilizes techniques such as seismic facies analysis, seismic attribute optimization, paleogeomorphology reconstruction, and source-to-sink sedimentary systemanalysis to analyze the 3D seismic data of the study area. Research indicates that the Sanya Formation in the Changchang Sag of the Qiongdongnan Basin comprises three depositional units: submarine fan, feeder channel, and Semi-deep marine to deep marine mudstone. The submarine fan is a fan formed by the coupling and convergence of submarine fans sourced from the southwest and southeast. Internally, it is divided into three sub-facies: the proximal fan of the sand-rich submarine fan, the main body of the sand-rich submarine fan lobes, and the distal lobes of the sand-rich submarine fan. The submarine fan sourced from the southwest extends nearly north-south and is primarily fed by sediment transported through three large, banded ancient valleys. The sedimentary filling is characterized by three-phase progradation. The submarine fan sourced from the southeast extends nearly east-west and is primarily fed by sediment transported through a single large, banded ancient valley. The sedimentary filling is characterized by two-phase lateral accumulation. During the deposition period of the Sanya Formation, certain areas of the southern uplift belt were exposed for extended periods and subjected to weathering and erosion. Sediments are transported to large ancient valleys through small supply channels. A large number of sediments were transported to the southern slope of the Changchang sag through the provenance channel system such as large ancient valleys and slope belts and deposited in the center of the sag. These make up a complete system of large ancient uplifts and submarine fan source-to-sink sedimentary systems. The deepwater area is one of the frontiers of oil and gas exploration, with the understanding of distribution and genesis of deepwater reservoirs being crucial for reservoir formation research. Despite Baodao Sag in the Qiongdongnan Basin being proven to be rich in hydrocarbon generation, significant oil and gas fields have yet to be discovered in the ultra-deepwater areas, and the distribution patterns of reservoirs in deep water remain unclear. Taking the southern slope area of the Baodao Sag as an example, the distribution characteristics of submarine fans are studied by employing seismic prediction methods, including seismic reflection structure analysis, seismic facies geometry, seismic attribute analysis, and the source-to-sink theory. The results show distinct characteristics: the fan delta exhibits parallel oblique progradational reflection, the slumping submarine fan displays lenticular reflection, and the submarine fan of the Sanya Formation demonstrates subparallel sheet reflection. The provenance of sediment is traced back to the denudation area of the Songnan low uplift and the Southern Uplift area in the southwest. The sediments were primarily transported through two main incised channel systems in the north and south, ultimately flowing into the southern slope area of the Baodao Sag. The application of seismic sedimentological prediction methods and source-sink theory has laid a solid geological foundation for oil and gas exploration and the analysis of reservoir forming conditions in the deepwater area of the Baodao Sag.

Enhanced sedimentation at glacial margins can produce submarine megaslides (>10,000 km3). We report a single megaslide in the Surveyor Fan, Gulf of Alaska. Minimum extant size is ∼16,124 km2 in area and ∼9,080 km3 in volume. Slope failure occurred ∼1.2 Ma at the onset of the mid‐Pleistocene transition (MPT). With accretion along the Aleutian‐Alaska Trench, the original volume is conservatively ∼16,280 km3, with only a 140 km run‐out due to its blocky, high shear strength nature. We suggest the megaslide was triggered by a major sediment influx at the onset of the MPT, when glacial‐interglacial cycles shifted from 41 to 100 Kyr. The absence of repeat megaslides may reflect a changing balance between seismic strengthening and sediment flux, where later sedimentation driven by cross‐shelf ice streams results in thin, fluidized, non‐cohesive slides. Continued accretion of the Surveyor Fan and megaslide also reduces critical wedge taper, further inhibiting major failure. Deepwater oil and gas exploration is the key to sustainable breakthroughs in petroleum exploration worldwide. The Central Canyon gas field has confirmed the Lingshui Sag is a hydrocarbon-generating sag, and the deepwater reservoirs in the Lingshui Sag still have more fabulous oil and gas exploration potential. Based on drilling data and three-dimensional (3D) seismic data, this paper uses seismic facies analysis, seismic attribute analysis, and coherence slice analysis to identify the types of submarine fans (lobe-shaped and band-shaped submarine fans) that developed in the Lingshui Sag during the Middle Miocene, clarify the source-to-sink system of the submarine fans and discuss the genesis mechanism of the submarine fans. The results show that: (1) the deepwater source-to-sink system of the Lingshui Sag in the Middle Miocene mainly consisted of a "delta (sediment supply) - submarine canyon (sediment transport channel) - submarine fan (deepwater sediment sink)" association; (2) the main factor controlling the formation of the submarine fans developed in the Lingshui Sag was on the relative sea level decline; and (3) the bottom current reworked the lobe-shaped submarine fan that developed in the northern Lingshui Sag and formed the band-shaped submarine fan with a greater sand thickness. This paper aims to provide practical geological knowledge for subsequent petroleum exploration and development in the deepwater area of the Qiongdongnan Basin through a detailed analysis of the Middle Miocene submarine fan sedimentary system developed in the Lingshui Sag. Seafloor topography plays an important role in the evolution of submarine lobes. However, it is still not so clear how the shape of slope affects the three-dimensional (3-D) architecture of submarine lobes. In this study, we analyze the effect of topography factors on different hierarchical lobe architectures that formed during Pliocene to Quaternary in the Rovuma Basin offshore East Africa. We characterize the shape, size and growth pattern of different hierarchical lobe architectures using 3-D seismic data. We find that the relief of the topographic slope determines the location of preferential deposition of lobe complexes and single lobes. When the topography is irregular and presents topographic lows, lobe complexes first infill these depressions. Single lobes are deposited preferentially at positions with higher longitudinal (i.e. across-slope) slope gradients. As the longitudinal slope becomes higher, the aspect ratio of the single lobes increases. Lateral (i.e. along-slope) topography does not seem to have a strong influence on the shape of single lobe, but it seems to affect the overlap of single lobes. When the lateral slope gradient is relatively high, the single lobes tend to have a larger overlap surface. Furthermore, as the average of lateral slope and longitudinal slope gets greater, the width/thickness ratio of the single lobe is smaller, i.e. sediments tend to accumulate vertically. The results demonstrate that the shape of slopes more comprehensively influences the 3-D architecture of lobes in natural deep-sea systems than previously other lobe deposits and analogue experiments, which helps us better understand the development and evolution of the distal parts of turbidite systems. The Qom Formation is the most important hydrocarbon reservoir target in Central Iran. The Qom platform developed in a back‐arc basin during the Oligo–Miocene due to the closing of the Tethyan Seaway. This formation consists of a variety of carbonate and non‐carbonate facies deposited on a platform ranging from supratidal to basin. A combination of tectonic and eustatic events led to some lateral and vertical facies variations in the study area. Six third‐order depositional sequences and related surfaces were identified regarding vertical facies changes in the studied sections of this Oligo–Miocene succession. According to all results and data, this succession was initially deposited during the Chattian upon a distally steepened ramp of siliciclastic‐carbonate composition, including the Bouma sequence. Then, from the late Chattian to the Aquitanian, the platform changed into a homoclinal carbonate ramp with a gentle profile. With respect to tectonic activity, this phase was a calm period during the deposition of the Qom Formation. Finally, a drowned carbonate platform and a rimmed shelf emerged during the Burdigalian, terminated by the continental deposits of the Upper Red Formation. Abstract Deep‐water carbonate deposition is relatively poorly understood but an area of vigorous research in academia and industry, where these deposits are a significant component of many unconventional petroleum reservoirs. Recent studies of modern deep‐water carbonates have highlighted the wide variety of depositional processes, sediment types and resultant geomorphology; however, well‐documented outcrops of ancient systems, their rock types and architecture are relatively sparse. The Mississippian Lake Valley Formation provides world‐class exposures of slope‐basinal carbonate deposits. The Tierra Blanca and Doña Ana members comprise submarine fans that are >14 to 20 km in length, >5 km wide, and exposed in strike and dip view, affording a unique opportunity to constrain the architecture, rock types and sedimentary processes. Tierra Blanca and Doña Ana sedimentation was dominated by crinoids shed from an up‐dip platform and supplemented by sediments sourced locally from Waulsortian mounds. Depositional processes include turbidity flows, debris flows and hybrid sediment‐gravity flows. The Tierra Blanca submarine fan thins towards its lateral flanks and distal fringe, where deposits become more mud‐dominated, gravelly grain‐supported flows are less common, and fewer beds have scoured bases. In proximal settings, bed tracing complemented by measured sections allow mapping of stratal surfaces and identification of stories, elements and complexes. The Tierra Blanca evolved from more unconfined to confined deposition. Point‐sourced deposition of the Tierra Blanca fan required a funnelling mechanism, probably due to bathymetry created by Waulsortian mounds or possibly a platform margin re‐entrant. Outcrop exposures illustrate that younger Doña Ana submarine fan deposits onlap onto, and compensationally stack with, the thickest portions of the antecedent Tierra Blanca fan. These outcrops illustrate both similarities and differences between carbonate and siliciclastic gravity flow deposits. Similarities include comparable deposit types, depositional processes and architecture; differences relate to hydrodynamics of carbonate grains, funnelling mechanisms for point‐sourced deposits and sequence stratigraphic forcing.

The submarine fan with a narrow shelf is usually reactive to environmental signal propagation; however, source-to-sink functioning can be further complicated by several allogenic forcings. Here, we document the high-frequency provenance variations and different sediment delivery models recorded in the late Triassic Zhuoni fan developed in the northeastern Paleo-Tethys Ocean, mainly based on process-based sedimentological and provenance study of the Panyuan section in the West Qinling area in the northeastern margin of Tibetan Plateau. High-, low-density turbidites, hybrid event beds and hyperpycnites are distributed in the lobe-dominated submarine fan succession. Field sedimentological evidence from surrounding outcrops suggests that shelf-edge failure was the main cause of most high-and low-density turbidites with the overall absence of submarine slides or slumps, whereas the narrow shelf configuration together with late Triassic humid pulses is favourable for the occurrence of flood-related hyperpycnites in the Zhuoni fan. Detrital zircon grains (N = 6; n=123-272) generally have Palaeozoic-Mesozoic ages (ca. 350-250 Ma and 500-400 Ma) and Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic ages (ca. 2100-1750 Ma and 2600-2400 Ma), but they can be further categized into three age groups due to different proportions of Precambrian age populations. The results demonstrate that the potential source areas may include the South and North Qinling Orogenic Belt, Qilian Orogenic Belt, different segments of North China Craton and the tectonic junction area between the Qinling and Qilian Orogenic Belts. The temporal changes in provenance signals, which are reflected by both the detrital zircon age spectra and heavy mineral assemblages, indicate different contributions of those sources in response to sea-level fluctuation. It could thus give rise to temporal variations between reactive and buffered source-to-sink sediment delivery models of the Zhuoni fan, despite the overall narrow shelf configuration. The development of the lowstand Zhuoni fan was directly related to extrabasinal hyperpycnal delivery from the river mouth and its high-frequency provenance variability recorded different efficiencies of signal transfer through the onshore catchment with significantly influence of temporal storage, fluvial rejuvenation or even regional climate variability. The highstand submarine fan was thought to be formed by shelf-edge failure with sediment buffering in the shelf region, which was associated with a strong magnitude of provenance mixing. The influence of bottom currents on submarine channels has been widely recognized, for instance, by the formation of asymmetric channel-levee systems and drifts. In contrast, it is often considered that submarine lobes can be only reworked by strong bottom currents and are not affected by bottom currents during their deposition. In this study, we analyse the potential effect of bottom currents on different hierarchical lobe architectures that formed during the lower Oligocene in the Rovuma Basin offshore East Africa. We characterize the stacking patterns, morphology and connectivity of different hierarchy lobes using well data and three-dimensional seismic data. We found no direct influence of bottom currents on the lobe complexes and single lobes that show a unidirectional stacking pattern that is opposite to the direction of bottom currents. Lobe elements in single lobes display vertical accretion with no obvious relationship with bottom currents. Additionally, the first deposited single lobe morphology presents an asymmetric shape, with a thicker lobe margin on the downstream side of the bottom currents, but this is due to an initial low topography on the downstream side rather than bottom currents. The architectural distribution reflects that the topography present before the depositions of the submarine lobes was controlled by previous asymmetrical channel-levee systems formed by the synchronous interaction of bottom currents and gravity flows. This asymmetric topography controls the subsequent deposition of lobes and results in the migration of single lobes in the upstream direction of bottom currents. Although weak to moderate bottom currents may not be able to substantially rework submarine lobes, our results demonstrate that they may control the geometry and evolution of submarine channels and thus indirectly affect the thickness and migration of lobes in more environments than previously thought. The deposits of the upper Neoproterozoic Zerrissene Group of central‐western Namibia represent a large siliciclastic deep‐water depositional system that showcases the intricacies of facies and architectural relationships from bed‐scale to fan‐system‐scale. The lack of vegetation in the Namib Desert and regular east–west repetition of folded stratigraphy (reflecting ca 50% tectonic shortening) provides quasi‐three‐dimensional exposure over a current area of approximately 2700 square kilometres. The Brak River Formation, the middle sand‐rich unit of the Zerrissene Group, consists of nearly 600 m of strata exposed in multiple parallel continuous outcrops up to ca 10 km in length and oriented obliquely to depositional dip. Ten stratigraphic sections are correlated ca 32 km (ca 64 km restored) across the basin and offer exposure comparable in scale to modern submarine fans. Six sedimentary facies are identified and grouped into four facies associations that represent axial‐to‐marginal portions of deep‐water lobes in an unconfined submarine fan system. Spatial facies patterns, regional thickness variations, and palaeocurrents indicate that Brak River Formation sediments were transported primarily from the north to south–south‐west through a trough‐like basin, and deposited within an unconfined basin plain at the junction of the Adamastor and Khomas oceans. The unique outcrop exposure and extent permits the documentation of system‐scale architecture and basin configuration of the Brak River submarine fan system. A transition from the sand‐rich lower Brak River Formation to more intercalated mudstone‐dominated intervals in the middle and upper Brak River Formation is interpreted to record a change from aggradational to compensational stacking of lobe deposits. This records the evolution of a large submarine fan as it filled the subtle seafloor topography and became less confined at the system‐scale. The documentation of these deep‐water deposits from centimetre‐scale to basin‐scale provides a new model for a system with extensive long‐distance transport of sand‐rich sediment gravity flows to submarine lobes without apparent channelization. Investigating the sedimentary architecture and evolution of sand-rich submarine fans is vital for comprehending deep-water sedimentary processes and enhancing the success rate of hydrocarbon resource exploration. Recent drilling activities in the Qiongdongnan Basin, northern South China Sea, have unveiled significant gas hydrate and shallow gas potential. However, exploration in this area faces substantial challenges due to the limited understanding of sandy reservoirs. Leveraging extensive newly acquired extensive 3D seismic data (~9000 km²) and well data, our study reveals five distinct deep-water depositional systems in the Quaternary Ledong Formation, including a submarine fan system, mass transport deposits, deepwater channel-levee systems, slope fans, and hemipelagic sediments. Notably, the targeted sandrich submarine fan lies within the abyssal plain, situated at a water depth of 1300-1700 m. This fan exhibits a unique tongue-shape configuration and a SW-NE flow direction within the plane and spans an expansive area of ~2800 km² with maximum length and width reaching 140 km and 35 km, respectively. Vertically, the fan comprises five stages of distributary channel-lobe complexes, progressing from Unit 1 to Unit 5. Their distribution ranges steadily increase from Unit 1 to Unit 3, followed by a rapid decrease from Unit 4 to Unit 5. Our results suggest that the occurrence and evolution of the submarine fan are primarily controlled by sea level fluctuation, confined geomorphology, and sediment supply. Specifically, sea level fluctuation and sediment supply influenced the occurrence of the submarine fan. Concurrently, the confined geomorphology in the abyssal plain provided accumulation space for sediments and shaped the fan into its distinct tongue-like form. In contrast to the deepwater channels within the deepwater channel-levee systems, the distributary turbidite channels within the submarine fan are marked by lower erosion depth with "U" shapes, greater channel width, and higher ratios of width to depth. The comparative analysis identifies turbidite channels as the focal points for offshore gas hydrate and shallow gas exploration in the Qiongdongnan Basin. Furthermore, the temporal evolution of submarine fan offers valuable insights into Quaternary deep-water sedimentary processes and hydrocarbon exploration within shallow strata of marginal ocean basins. The Tertiary-age deep-marine succession cropping out between Tarifa and Algeciras can be subdivided into two units, namely the Late Eocene-?Early Oligocene Getares Unit and the overlying Oligocene-?Early Miocene Algeciras Formation. These strata comprise six sedimentary facies, ranging from thick-bedded sandstones to mudstones. The depositional settings are variable, comprising sandstone/calcarenite packages with intercalated mudstones and marls. The lowermost coarse-grained package is the Getares Unit (fan-fringe setting). This is overlain by the thick-bedded sandstones of the Algeciras Fm (channel, channel-margin setting) which pass upwards into more laterally-extensive beds (sheet-like lobe). Sediments were derived from a coastal setting to the north, as evidenced by occasionally abundant plant remains, from direct fluvial input (hyperpycnal flow). Within this succession, 34 ichnogenera (48 ichnospecies) have been recorded, including, Belorhaphe, Capodistria, Chondrites, Circulichnis, Cochlichnus, Cosmorhaphe, Desmograpton, Gordia, Halopoa, ?Helicorhaphe, Helminthopsis, Helminthorhaphe, Imponoglyphus, Lorenzinia, Megagrapton, Oldhamia, Ophiomorpha, Palaeophycus, Paleodictyon, ?Phycodes, Phycosiphon, Planolites, Protopaleodictyon, Protovirgularia, Scolicia, Skolithos, Spirophycus, Spirophyton, Spirohaphe, Taenidium, Teichichnus, Thalassinoides Urohelminthoida and Zoophycos. Of the ichnofossil assemblages that were defined, most are concentrated in the fan-fringe (Getares Unit; 74%) and channel/channel-margin (lowermost Algeciras Fm; 41%) settings, with a marked reduction in the sheet lobe system (uppermost Algeciras Fm; 9%). The ichnofaunal assemblage from the Tarifa-Almeria section represents the Nereites ichnofacies, or more specifically, the Paleodictyon and Nereites subichnofacies, both typified by abundant graphoglyptids. Deposition in the Algeciras-Tarifa region commenced with the mudstones underlying the Getares Unit followed by a sandstone package (fan fringe; Punta de Getares), indicative of fan progradation. Subsequent mudstones suggest a phase of quiescence before the deposition of the thick, sandy hyperpycnites in the lower part of the Algeciras Fm (Punta del Carnero I & II) where deposition was probably related to flooding events in the source rivers to the N. These were subsequently overlain by the Tarifa area lobe sediments. Deposition of the succession coincided with the transition from a Greenhouse to an Icehouse climatic regime (Eocene-Oligocene) and this change may be reflected in the marked reduction in ichnofaunas moving from the lower (Punta del Carnero) to the upper (Tarifa) Algeciras Fm. The absence of repeat megaslides may reflect a changing balance between seismic strengthening and sediment flux, where later sedimentation driven by cross‐shelf ice streams results in thin, fluidized, non‐cohesive slides. Continued accretion of the Surveyor Fan and megaslide also reduces critical wedge taper, further inhibiting major failure.

We use heat flux measurements colocated with seismic reflection profiles over a buried basement high on the Juan de Fuca plate ∼25 km seaward of the deformation front offshore Oregon to test for the presence of hydrothermal circulation in the oceanic crust. We also revisit heat flux data crossing a buried basement high ∼25 km seaward of the deformation front ∼150 km north, offshore Washington. Seafloor heat flux is inversely correlated with sediment thickness, consistent with vigorous hydrothermal circulation in the basement aquifer homogenizing temperatures at the top of the basement. Heat flux immediately above the summit of the basement highs is greater than expected solely from conduction. Fluid seepage at rates of ∼2.6–5.4 cm yr−1 in a 1–1.5 km‐wide conduit through ∼800–1,300 m thick sediment sections above these basement highs can explain these observations. Observations of thermally significant fluid seepage through sediment >225 m thick on oceanic crust are unprecedented. High sediment permeability, high fluid overpressure in the basement, or a combination of both is required to drive fluid seepage at the observed rates. We infer that rapid seepage occurs because the basement highs rise above the low permeability basal sediment with their tops protruding into the base of high permeability Nitinat or Astoria Fan sediment. Seepage from basement highs penetrating into the submarine fans can affect the thermal state of crust entering the subduction zone. Plain Language Summary: Fluid circulation in the oceanic crust can transport large amounts of heat, influencing the heat content and the distribution of heat within the crust. This fluid circulation primarily occurs in a high permeability aquifer composed of rapidly cooled basalt flows that comprise the upper ∼300 m of oceanic crustal rocks. Most marine sediments that accumulate on the basaltic aquifer have very low permeability and inhibit fluid flow; for sediment covered oceanic crust, fluid recharge/discharge from/to the ocean only occurs at sediment‐free basement outcrops. For most sediment types, ∼40 m of sediment accumulation is sufficient to slow fluid flow rates through them, so that fluid flow is not thermally significant. For sites offshore Oregon and Washington, we document thermally significant fluid seepage through sediment ∼800–1,300 m thick. This seepage occurs over buried basaltic hills that penetrate through low permeability sediment into a thick layer of high permeability sandy sediment that hosts the seepage. The fluid seepage, at ∼2.6–5.4 cm yr−1, is fast enough to remove heat from the underlying crust. This can affect the temperature of the crust entering the subduction zone offshore North America. There are many large-scale Cenozoic sedimentary basins with plentiful river deltas, deep-water fans and carbonate platforms in the southern South China Sea. The Crocker Fan was deposited as a typical submarine fan during the late Eocene—early Miocene, and stretches extensively across the entire Sarawak-Sabah of the northern Borneo area. However, systematic analyses are still lacking regarding its sediment composition and potential source suppliers. No consensus has been reached yet on the provenance evolution and sedimentary infilling processes, which seriously impeded the oil-and-gas exploration undertakings. By combining with sedimentary-facies identification, heavy mineral assemblages, elemental geochemistry and detrital zircon U-Pb dating, this paper aims to generalize an integrated analysis on the potential provenance terranes and restore source-to-sink pathways of the Crocker Fan. In general, the Crocker Fan was initially formed over the Cretaceous-lower/middle Eocene Rajang Group by an angular Rajang unconformity. The continual southward subduction of the proto-South China Sea resulted in magmatic activities and subsequent regional deformation and thrusting along the Lupar Line in the northern Borneo. The lowermost Crocker sequence is featured by a thick conglomerate layer sourced from in-situ or adjacent paleo-uplifts. From the late Eocene to the early Miocene, the Crocker Fan was constantly delivered with voluminous detritus from the Malay Peninsula of the western Sundaland. The Zengmu Basin was widely deposited with delta plain and neritic facies sediments, while the Brunei-Sabah Basin, to the farther east, was ubiquitously characterized by turbiditic sequences. The Crocker Fan successions are overall thick layers of modest-grained sandstones, which formed high-quality reservoirs in the southern South China Sea region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mechanisms causing quality variations and key control factors of submarine-fan reservoirs in the gas field X of the Rovuma Basin, East Africa are analyzed based on core and well-log data in this paper. Depositional fabric, lithofacies difference and characteristics of genetic units are the fundamental reasons of reservoir quality variations. In the case of weak cementation, porosity and permeability of submarine-fan reservoirs are controlled by grain sorting and clay content, respectively. Reservoir quality variations for 5 main lithofacies are related to variable depositional fabrics and calcite cementation. Among them, massive medium-coarse sandstones with weak cementation have the highest porosity and permeability, and coarser or finer sandstones have poorer reservoir quality. The existence of bottom current can develop laminated sandstones, improving the pore structure and physical properties greatly. Lithofacies vary among different types, locations and stages of genetic units, and they control the distribution patterns of submarine-fan reservoir quality: the physical properties of channel shaft or lobe main body are better than those of the channel or lobe edge. The sandstone sorting and physical properties are gradually improved from near-source to far-source. When multi-stage sand bodies are superimposed, the sand-mud ratio in the later stage is higher than that in the earlier stage, making the physical properties get better in the later stage.

Abstract Over the last several years, numerous outcrop localities have been revisited to add quantitative detail to submarine lobe facies models that previously focussed on facies relationships in a qualitative sense. This study utilises well‐exposed submarine lobe deposits of the Point Loma Formation in Cabrillo National Monument (San Diego, CA) to provide quantitative and statistical insights into the lateral variability of event‐bed (i.e. turbidite) architecture within and between lobe elements. Within a lobe element (defined as a surface‐bounded, genetically related package), event beds compensationally stack, thinning over subtle sea floor topography created by the previous event bed. Between lobe elements, larger‐scale compensation is observed, with clearly defined stratal surfaces and facies architecture distinguishing the four lobe elements. A lateral facies transition is observed for one lobe element, where sandstone beds pinch out and the element thickness halves over a distance of 100 m. However, architectural parameters of event beds (e.g. bed thickness, thinning rate, fining rate) are not appreciably different between these elements, suggesting that the observed stratal architecture does not readily translate into vertical bed thickness (i.e. stacking) patterns that could be easily recognised in common subsurface data types like borehole‐derived core. While the data derived from this outcrop study are valuable for improving the construction of realistic geological and reservoir models, caution is necessary when interpreting lobe element boundaries from borehole data. The lobe deposits measured in this study have event‐bed thicknesses and thinning rates most similar to semi‐confined proximal lobes, suggesting a more proximal position and more confined than previously interpreted. Based on the relationships between sandstone and mudstone thicknesses and thinning rates, bed and lobe‐element compensation and minimal evidence of erosion, the Point Loma Formation at Cabrillo National Monument is reinterpreted as a medial lobe environment with some degree of lateral and/or frontal confinement.

As the main target of deepwater oil and gas exploration, submarine fans are also the frontier and focus of sedimentology research. Based on the latest three-dimensional (3D) seismic data covering the study area, as well as heavy mineral, rare earth elements, and other data and guided by the theory of seismic sedimentology, this study analyzes the lower Miocene provenance system and sediment dispersion system in the eastern deepwater area of the Qiongdongnan Basin, northern South China Sea, from the perspective of source-to-sink system research. Our research defines the sediment supply function of provenance, paleogeomorphology and valley transport system, sedimentation results and distribution, and the coupling relationship between the source–channel–sink system and comprehensively constructs a set of application guidelines of source-to-sink system research to guide the exploration and prediction of favorable play in the study area and other similar basins. This study shows that in the early Miocene, as controlled by tectonics and paleogeomorphology, uplift areas developed on both the northern and southern sides of the Songnan, Baodao, and Changchang Sags in the Qiongdongnan Basin and small provenances of near-sag uplifts were found in the southern part of the sag. The provenance area in the northern part of the sag was large but not unified, and it formed different provenance systems consisting of the Hainan Uplift in the northern Songnan Sag, Hainan Uplift in the northern Baodao Sag, and Shenhu Uplift in the northern Changchang Sag. A series of canyon systems that developed in the early Miocene were the main channels for sediment transport from the shelf to the slope in the northern Songnan, Baodao, and Changchang Sags. In the early stage of the early Miocene, due to regional sea level decline, the scale of the canyons was generally large, and the scale of the canyons on the northern edge of the Songnan Sag was significantly larger than that of the Baodao Sag. As the relative sea level rose, the canyons became small, narrow, and shallow in the late stage of the early Miocene. Under the dual control of the “source–channel” system, multiple “delta–canyon–submarine fan” depositional systems developed in the Songnan, Baodao, and Changchang Sags in the early Miocene, and large deltas in the depositional systems were mainly located along the northern part of the sag and prograded to the shelf edge of the northern Songnan, Baodao, and Changchang Sags from north to south, providing a good material basis for the development of deepwater sediments.

The Ledong submarine channel and the Dongfang submarine fan, two remarkable sedimentary systems developed during the late Miocene, are considered promising hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Yinggehai Basin of the South China Sea. A comparative study was conducted to reveal the differences between the source-to-sink characteristics of the two gas-bearing and gravity-driven depositional systems to determine their provenances, formation mechanisms and migration paths as well as their key controlling factors. The heavy mineral assemblages and detrital zircon U-Pb dating results suggest that the Ledong channel was fed by the Hainan provenance from the eastern margin, whereas the Dongfang fan was supplied by northwestern terrigenous sources. The relative sea level transgression and sufficient sediment supply triggered the delivery of deltaic loads toward the continental shelves. Seismic data show that fracture activity had a great impact on the tectono-morphologic features of the margins. During downward flow, the gravity flow along the Yingdong Slope encountered steeply falling faulted slope break belts and formed the Ledong incised channel, and the gravity flow of the Yingxi Slope moved through the gently dipping flexural break slope zone and formed the Dongfang dispersed lobe deposits. Since ca. 30 Ma, the sedimentary center has been migrating from the north to the southeast, which produced a clear control of the southeastward distribution pattern of these two sedimentary systems. Observations of cores and thin sections indicate that the rock structures and their compositions are more mature in the Dongfang channel than in the Ledong fan. This study documents significant differences and similarities by comparing the source-to-sink processes of the two gravity-driven systems that developed in the Yinggehai Basin and provides analogies for understanding similar submarine sedimentary systems that developed under similar geological contexts worldwide. Fractionation of particles in deep‐water sediment gravity flows is an important factor in the resulting deposit and for discriminating sedimentary environments, but remains poorly understood. Quantitative characterization of particle shape was performed for more than ten‐thousand particles of experimental gravity flow experiments (both of cohesive and non‐cohesive nature) made using coal and kaolin particles. Eleven particle shape parameters were calculated and their distribution and trends within the experimental basin were evaluated. Results indicate the existence of non‐normal distributions and observable correlations between particle shape parameters. Shape parameters such as circularity and roundness are dominant controls on shape variation. Strong correlations exist between mean shape parameters and along‐flow distance from the source for particles in non‐cohesive flow experiments. Important differences were observed between shape parameter distributions of particles sampled at different areas within the experimental basin, which can be grouped based on their depositional setting (proximal or distal) using multivariate statistical analysis, especially for the non‐cohesive flow experiments. A tendency for more elongated and irregularly‐shaped particles at the more distal and marginal areas of the studied experimental basin was observed and validated by previous field studies in real‐world deep‐marine deposits. Besides, fractionation of particles is less‐pronounced in cohesive flows compared with non‐cohesive ones suggesting the soundness of discrimination of depositional settings based solely on particle shape characteristics is strongly dependent on parent flow characteristics. Yet, results highlight the potential of particle shape analysis in revealing spatial particle shape trends due to hydrodynamic fractionation and discriminating different depositional settings within submarine fans. Submarine canyons are efficient sediment transport pathways from shallow marine areas to deep sea. Along active margins, large tsunamis are a trigger for sediment transport to deep sea. However, sediment transport through submarine canyons by such extreme wave events in the carbonate depositional environments has not been fully understood. Large tsunamis have repeatedly struck the coral reef islands of the southern Ryukyu Islands and have transported large boulders composed of coral from the reef to shore. In this study, we examined sediment cores collected near the mouths of submarine canyons and basin floor on the southern Ryukyu arc’s forearc. The presence of coarse calciturbidites containing coral, molluskan fragments, and coral reef benthic foraminifera was limited on the submarine fan formed at the mouth of the reef-connected and shelf-incised submarine canyon. In cores collected near the mouth of shelf-incised submarine canyons with no reef connection and slope-confined canyons, no coarse calciturbidite is observed. Few calciturbidites were found in more downslope cores, implying that most calcareous grains derived from shallow marine areas were deposited on this fan. Depositional intervals of turbidites were calculated to be several hundred–a few thousand years, which agree with the recurrence intervals of large tsunamis estimated from onshore tsunami deposits, based on radiocarbon dates in hemipelagic mud intervals. No temporal change in the depositional intervals of calciturbidites in the cores from the submarine fan since the last glacial maximum. Therefore, the tsunamis may be an important mechanism for surface sediment reworking in coral reefs, and shelf-incised and reef-connected submarine canyons can play an important role in the efficient transport of shallow marine calcareous grains to the deep sea.

The sedimentology of upper flow regime bedforms represents an important research topic at the present. Deposits interpreted as those of supercritical flows are widely recognized in modern fan systems, but their recovery is challenging. Most of the sedimentological information has come from channel thalwegs but supercritical bedforms are also frequently downslope from the channel mouths. Such an environment has been identified in the Paola basin, where erosive and depositional cyclic steps have been imaged and identified in a sandy submarine lobe of the Amantea Fan. High-resolution sub-bottom profiles provide insight into the bedform internal architecture and their relationships with a frontally-confining ridge. For the first time, supercritical bedforms in a submarine lobe have been interpreted in two distinct positions: in the scour of an erosional cyclic step and in the stoss side of a depositional cyclic step. Coarse to medium-grained massive sand with flame structures, indicating rapid sediment fall-out and frequently associated with the occurrence of hydraulic jumps, has been identified in the scour and at the toe of the ridge. The latter represents an example of topographically induced hydraulic jumps driven by a frontal confinement. Top-cut-out medium to fine sands with tractive structures have been interpreted as the deposits related to the stoss side of a cyclic step or small-scale antidune superimposed on the cyclic step surface. The presented data broaden the understanding of the range of processes that are driven by the interaction between turbidity currents and seafloor topography and the dip of the slope. The recognition that topography influences the density structure and the degree of criticality of the flow and, consequently, the morphodynamics and facies of the relative deposits may help to explain sediment distribution and improve depositional models of fan lobes in confined settings. • Sedimentological information about supercritical bedforms in a frontally confined submarine lobe are provided. • Observations result from the interpretation of high-resolution seismic profiles and the analysis of five gravity cores. • Sedimentary structures, generally associated with hydraulic jumps, have been identified in scour fills and at the base of a ridge. • The topography influences the distribution of supercritical bedforms and the flow criticality. This paper comprehensively reviews recently discussed sedimentological and petroleum geological topics on submarine-fan turbidites as the major hydrocarbon reservoir rocks of the world. After the proposals of primary basic submarine-fan models in 19?〇・, many academic and industrial survey results recognized that submarine-fan depositional configuration has much variation affected by various control factors. Although practical type classification has been proposed, "sandy radial fan type" and "muddy channel levee type" can be recognized as the two representative configuration types of submarine fans. MHyperpycnal 'f*low is a newly recognized flow mechanism to transport a certain amount of terrestrial organic materials into the deep sea territory, resulting in the formation of high TOC source and reservoir rocks of turbidites. Submarine-fan turbidites occur not only in a clastic deep-sea environment but also on a continental shelf as "shelf turbidites", in a carbonate setting as "calci-turbidites" and in a shale basin as calci- or silty turbidites, all of which possess the potential as exploration targets. Reservoir property of turbidite sandstones can be controlled by three basic factors: background, primary facies and secondary diagenesis factors. Coarser facies deposited in a channel or depositional lobe tends to demonstrate high reservoir quality primarily but easily be cemented 辻 diagenetic effect is intense. As the major trap type of turbidite sandstone reservoirs, the combination of structural and stratigraphic traps can easily be found in the world-wide oil fields. "Seismic geomorphology" using 3D seismic survey data has widely been used for detailed distribution and property analysis of submarine-fan tubidites, as a recentiy developed effective analytical method. The obtained data are provided to a geostatistical reservoir modeling as basic geologic framework constraints. To implement sedimentologically meaningful reservoir modeling, object-based modeling, multipoint-geostatistics using a training image, surface-based modeling and depositional process-based modeling are adoped for submarine-fan turbidite reservoirs. The Crocker Formation, Late Eocene to Middle Miocene in age, was deposited in a deep-marine environment by a turbidity current. Most of the facies identified in the field are related to the sedimentary bed-form structures belonging to Bouma sequences. These prominently include unit divisions such as Ta referring to grading sand, Tb for parallel laminae, Tc for cross laminae, Td for mud laminae, and Te referring to hemipelagic mud. Five facies have adequately been identified using Bouma sequence implications, namely Facies 1 (F1: Ta-Tb layers), Facies 2 (F2: Ta-Te layers), Facies 3 (F3: Tb-Te layers), Facies 4 (F4: Tb / Tc-Te layers), and Facies 5 (F5: Td-Te layers). Based on the Crocker Formation facies analysis, three distinct groups of facies associations were recognised: Deep-Marine Channel-Lobe Association (Type A1), Deep-Marine Channel-Levee Association (Type A2), and Distal Lobe Association. These facies associations precisely revealed that the Crocker Formation's depositional environments were likely deposited in the middle-fan with associated outer-fan settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of sedimentological core analysis of the Achimov Formation (Upper Valanginian, Lower Cretaceous) confirm that it was formed by higher efficiency systems of submarine fans in (relatively) deep marine basin. Lithofacies models of Ach5-6 were generated, well correlation was performed based on the comprehensive analysis of core, well logging and seismic data. Distributary channels and proximal parts of depositional lobes are characterized by the best reservoir properties.

Overbank deposits provide a potentially valuable record of flows that have passed through a submarine channel. The architecture of overbank deposits has generally assumed to relate to autogenic processes related to channel construction. In previous models, which are largely based on passive margins, the distribution and geometry of these deposits is relatively simple, and hence generally predictable. Here, we show how the interaction of different flow types with the complex morphology on a highly-tectonically modified margin can profoundly affect overbank depositional processes, and hence also the resultant deposit geometry and architecture. Our case study is the Acquarone Fan, located in the intraslope Gioia Basin in the south-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea, whose topography is mainly controlled by the presence of the Acquarone structural ridge, which results in the confinement of the left south-west side of the channel-levee system. The research is carried out through analysis of multibeam bathymetric and high-resolution Chirp sub-bottom profiler data. Seven depositional units (Units I-VII) record the recent depositional history of the fan; their thickness has been mapped and their parent flow-types have been interpreted through their seismic response. According to unit thickness maps, two main patterns of deposition are recognized in the overbank area. Their depocenters coincide with different extensive sediment wave fields developed in specific tracts of the right levee and in the frontal splay area. We show that the location of the depocenters varies in time according to the prevalent flow-type and by its interaction with the surrounding seafloor topography and channel planform. We interpret that the lateral confinement of the channel by the structural high generates episodic rebound of the overspilling flow and the inversion of the channel asymmetry. The vertical stratification of the flow strongly influences the overbank deposition where the channel planform has a non-linear shape such as bends and knick-points. In particular, the vertical stratification influences the hydraulic jump size that conditions the amount of overspill and thus the location of overbank depocenters. This study highlights that variations in the sediment distribution and composition on the overbank can be related to the way different flows interact with tectonic setting.

Based on the relationships between sandstone and mudstone thicknesses and thinning rates, bed and lobe‐element compensation and minimal evidence of erosion, the Point Loma Formation at Cabrillo National Monument is reinterpreted as a medial lobe environment with some degree of lateral and/or frontal confinement. Lobate deposits in deep-water settings are diverse in their depositional architecture but this diversity is under-represented in the literature. Diverse architectures result from multiple factors including source material, basin margin physiography, transport pathway, and depositional setting. In this contribution, we emphasize the impact of differing source materials related to differing delivery mechanisms and their influence on architecture, which is an important consideration in source-to-sink studies. Three well imaged subsurface lobate deposits are described that display three markedly different morphologies. All three lobate examples, two from intraslope settings offshore Nigeria and one from a basin-floor setting offshore Indonesia, are buried by less than 150 m of muddy sediment and are imaged with high resolution 3D reflection seismic data of similar quality and resolution. Distinctively different distributary channel patterns are present in two of the examples, and no comparable distributaries are imaged in a third example. Distributary channels are emphasized because they are objectively recognized and because they often represent elements of elevated fluid content within buried lobate deposits and thus influence permeability structure. We speculate that the different distributary channel patterns documented here resulted from different processes linked to source materials: 1) a lobate deposit that is pervasively channelized by many distributaries that have branched at numerous points is interpreted to result from comparatively mud-rich, stratified, turbulent flows; 2) an absence of distributaries in a lobate deposit is interpreted to result from collapse of mud-poor, turbulent flows remobilized from littoral drift; and 3) a lobate deposit with only a few, long, straight distributaries with few branching points is interpreted to be dominated by highly viscous flows (i.e., debris flows). We propose a conceptual model that illustrates the relationship between the proportion of mud in contributing flows and the relative size and runout distance of lobate deposits. We conclude that reconciling 3D seismic morphologies with outcrop observations of channels, scours, and amalgamation zones, and simple application of hierarchical schemes, is problematic. Furthermore, when characterizing unconfined deep-water deposits in the subsurface, multiple models with significant differences in predicted permeability structure should be considered.

Machine-learning algorithms have been used by geoscientists to infer geologic and physical properties from hydrocarbon exploration and development wells for more than 40 years. These techniques historically utilize digital well-log information, which, like any remotely sensed measurement, have resolution limitations. Core is the only subsurface data that is true to geologic scale and heterogeneity. However, core description and analysis are time-intensive, and therefore most core data are not utilized to their full potential. Quadrant 204 on the United Kingdom Continental Shelf has publicly available open-source core and well log data. This study utilizes this dataset and machine-learning models to predict lithology and facies at the centimeter scale. We selected 12 wells from the Q204 region with well-log and core data from the Schiehallion, Foinaven, Loyal, and Alligin hydrocarbon fields. We interpreted training data from 659 m of core at the sub-centimeter scale, utilizing a lithology-based labeling scheme (five classes) and a depositional-process-based facies labeling scheme (six classes). Utilizing a “color-channel-log” (CCL) that summarizes the core image at each depth interval, our best performing trained model predicts the correct lithology with 69% accuracy (i.e., the predicted lithology output from the model is the same as the interpreted lithology) and predicts individual lithology classes of sandstone and mudstone with over 80% accuracy. The CCL data require less compute power than core image data and generate more accurate results. While the process-based facies labels better characterize turbidites and hybrid-event-bed stratigraphy, the machine-learning based predictions were not as accurate as compared to lithology. In all cases, the standard well-log data cannot accurately predict lithology or facies at the centimeter level. The machine-learning workflow developed for this study can unlock warehouses full of high-resolution data in a multitude of geological settings. The workflow can be applied to other geographic areas and deposit types where large quantities of photographed core material are available. This research establishes an open-source, python-based machine-learning workflow to analyze open-source core image data in a scalable, reproducible way. We anticipate that this study will serve as a baseline for future research and analysis of borehole and core data.

Whereas the effects of high-order relative sea level change (3rd-order and higher) on the formation and architecture of submarine fan systems are relatively well established, a lack of large-scale spatial and temporal data has resulted in the impacts of low-order relative sea level change (i.e. , 2nd-order) eluding characterization. With the aim of revealing the impacts of 2nd-order relative sea level, this study applied regional-scale seismic geomorphology to examine 142 Miocene-aged (21–8.2 Ma) submarine fans in the Baiyun Sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin (China), integrating a large 3D seismic volume (6000 km2), well logs and core data. By extracting seismic attributes calibrated to well data, architectural elements were interpreted, statistically correlated, and their evolution through time was assessed. The results were as follows: (1) architectural elements of submarine channels and lobes, as well as associated highstand deltas, shelf-margin deltas and incised valleys, were identified based on their seismic geomorphological features and location, revealing that submarine channels shift paleo-seaward from incised valleys and feed lobes; (2) there is a positive correlation between average width of submarine channels and average area of lobes, as well as between the average width of incised valleys and average width of submarine channels; (3) the size of architectural elements is inversely related to proportion of sand; and most importantly, (4) the size variation of architectural elements coincides with changes in 2nd-order relative sea level. Results also indicate that rapid tectonic subsidence played an important control on the size and sandiness of deep-water architectural elements. The understanding of the stratigraphic evolution of marine rift basins is important for both "pure" scientific and economic reasons. From a hydrocarbon exploration point of view the main goal is to develop tools to predict reservoir location, quality, and extent. Stratigraphic models try to do that, and only historical cases can be used to test those models. On the other hand, depositional model cannot precisely predict reservoir location as factors unique to the specific basin under analysis affect sediment distribution (basin physiography, type of flows, among others). This aspect can be assessed only on a case-by-case basis and can be used for initial hypothesis generation based on analogues. This paper shows a case history study based on the integration of well logs, and 3D seismic data across the Eastern Dampier sub-basin, Northwester Shelf of Australia. Advanced seismic interpretation techniques, calibrated to well data, enable the definition of a chrono-stratigraphic framework of the late syn-rift sequence (Late Jurassic) of the Lewis Trough, and the description of the sediment distribution through the interpretation of geomorphological features. During the Late Jurassic three different channel systems deliver sandstones to the deep-water part of the basin through multiple entry points. The timing of the sediment input seems to be linked to variation of sediment input as during that time relative sea-level was slowly rising. The location of the entry points is related to local physiography and defies any attempt of prediction based on general "rules." From a stratigraphic point view, the findings of the study support the idea that, in rift basin, mechanical subsidence is the primary control for accommodation space, with episodic pulses of extension followed by longer periods of tectonic quiescence. It is during these episodic movements along the basin's bounding faults that space for sedimentation is created. The fine siliciclastic rocks of the Early Permian Shoushangou Formation in West Ujimqin Banner, central Inner Mongolia are a hot spot for Late Paleozoic oil and gas exploration and hold key implications for the tectonic evolution during the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). Therefore, the sedimentary characteristics of the Shoushangou Formation in West Ujimqin Banner, along with the geochemical and Sm–Nd isotopic characteristics of the clastic rock samples in Well MXD1, were investigated to privde additional constraints on its provenance and tectonic background. The mudstones contain large proportions of quartz, feldspars and igneous debris, and the CIAcorr (0.52–0.66), the A–CN–K plot and the lack of Ce anomalies in REE show a weakly weathered provenance and the chemically unaltered parent rocks, suggestive of the proximal deposition and rapid burial. Slip-roll beddings, gravity flow, Bouma sequences and the (trace) fossil assemblages in the profile indicate that the Shoushangou Formation is mainly a shallow- (semi-)abyssal submarine fan and the lithological information indicates the presence of microfaces including main and lesser water supply channels, interchannels, lobes, natural levees. Furthermore, a narrow continental shelf above the submarine fan and the concentrated zircon age population of the Shoushangou formation suggest that the tectonic background is most likely a retroarc basin. The Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 ratio (19–24, average 22), the multivariable principal element source identification diagram and the plots of Th/Sc vs. Zr/Sc and Co/Th vs. La/Sc indicate that the source is mainly felsic, with a minor proportion of intermediate rocks. Trace elemental characteristics (e.g., Th, Zr, Sc, Co, Nd, and REE) deomonstrate that the tectonic setting of the Shoushangou Formation is confined by continental arcs. The whole rock Sm–Nd isotopic spectra of the Carboniferous and Permian strata indicate that the Baolidao arc is the main source of central Inner Mongolia. Additionally, the comparison of the Nd model ages and the zircon U–Pb ages of the Baolidao arc and other entities in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is in support of a prolonged subduction of the PAO since ∼510 Ma, suggesting that the Baolidao arc was developed from the southern continental arc of the original South Mongolia microcontinent. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Shoushangou Formation was deposited in a retro-arc basin which was strongly influenced by the steep subduction of the PAO and the results collectively suggest that the PAO terminated no earlier than the middle to late Permian. • Proposed a submarine fan model for the gravity flow system in central Inner Mongolia. • The Shoushangou Formation is deposited in the retro arc basin semi-confined by the Baolidao continental arc. • The siliciclastic rocks in the Shoushangou Formation are mainly derived from the Baolidao arc. • Sedimentary and geochronological evidences suggest that the PAO terminated no earlier than middle-late Permian. • The Nd isotope data indicate the affinity of the Baolidao arc with other entities in the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Abstract Submarine channel and fan deposits form the largest sediment accumulations on Earth and host significant reservoirs for hydrocarbons. While many studies of ancient fan deposits describe architectural variability along 2D transects (e.g. axis‐to‐fringe, proximal‐to‐distal), these relationships are often qualitative and are rarely quantified at the event‐bed scale. In order to enable quantitative comparison of the fine‐scale architecture of submarine depositional environments, 56 bed‐scale outcrop correlation panels from five broadly categorized environments (channel, levee, lobe, channel‐lobe transition zone, CLTZ and basin plain) were digitized. Measured architectural parameters (bed thickness, bed thinning rates, lateral correlation distance, net‐to‐gross) provide a large (n = 28,525) and statistically robust framework to compare event‐bed architectures within and between environments. “Thinning rate” data (i.e. the lateral rate of change of bed thickness) clearly differentiate deposits from different submarine depositional environments, helping to quantify generally accepted models for proximal‐to‐distal evolution of stratigraphic architecture. The thinning rates of sandstone beds and mudstone‐dominated intervals vary predictably between environments. For example, the highest sandstone thinning rates occur in channel deposits (0.2–6 cm/m; P10 and P90 values here and below) and decrease to lobe (0.1–1.6 cm/m), CLTZ (0.2–0.9 cm/m), levee (0.0024–0.078 cm/m) and basin‐plain deposits (0.000017–0.0054 cm/m). These quantitative relationships provide valuable insights for downslope flow evolution and the construction of stratigraphic architecture in submarine settings. Due to intra‐environment variability, net‐to‐gross is highly variable and thus (when considered alone) is not a diagnostic indicator of depositional environment. Submarine lobe deposits show the most variability in event bed thickness, thinning rate and net‐to‐gross, likely due to the inherent facies variability and differing boundary conditions. To explore this variability, lobe deposits were sub‐classified based on position (proximal, distal) and effective confinement (unconfined, semiconfined, confined) to provide a more detailed sub‐environment analysis. Unconfined lobe deposits show a proximal‐to‐distal increase in sandstone thickness and decrease in mudstone thickness, supporting conceptual models. Confined lobe deposits have thicker sandstone and mudstone beds and lower net‐to‐gross values as compared to unconfined and semiconfined lobes, supporting a sediment trapping mechanism by confinement. These quantified bed‐scale parameter comparisons enable the recognition of architectural similarities and differences within and between environments, demonstrating the need for more quantitative studies of bed‐scale heterogeneity. The results from this study are immediately applicable to parameterizing forward stratigraphic models, constraining property distribution in reservoir models, and probabilistic determination of depositional environment from outcrop and core descriptions of submarine depositional environments.

Abstract Sedimentological and petrographic studies of the Haymana Formation sandstones identify a submarine fan in the Haymana Basin. This study is confined to outcrop samples from the submarine-fan sandstones (the L1, L2, and L3 sections) and focuses on documentation of the petrographic characteristics of and depositional controls on reservoir properties of the Haymana Formation sandstones. Analysis of the lithology, texture, sedimentary structure, and petrography of the outcrop samples allows separation of the Haymana Formation sandstones into three distinct lithofacies, A, B, and C. Lithofacies A sandstones exhibit medium-coarse grain sizes (0.4–0.6 mm), moderate-good sorting, and subrounded grains. Lithofacies B sandstones exhibit fine grain sizes (0.2 mm), moderate sorting, and subrounded-subangular grains. Lithofacies C sandstones exhibit very fine grain sizes (0.112 mm) and nonreservoir facies. The main aim of this study is to document the diagenetic history and reservoir quality of the Haymana Formation sandstones. Lithofacies A has the best permeability, ranging from 80 to 120 mD, which can be related to the large grain size, the presence of cross-bedding, small amount of authigenic clays or cements in the pore throats, and enlarged pore apertures. In contrast, Lithofacies B sandstones contain variable yet small pore and pore-throat sizes, which are affected by abundant pore-filling authigenic clays, small grain sizes, and no dissolution. The permeability of the Lithofacies B sandstone ranges from 16 to 35 mD, which is lower than that of the Lithofacies A sandstone. Additionally, the Lithofacies B sandstones have small median pore-throat sizes (mean = 1.52 μm) and low porosities (average 4–6%), and the Lithofacies A sandstones have large pore-throat sizes (mean = 2.06–3 μm) and high porosities (average 20–25%), with most pore throats (50% or more) ranging between 1 and 4 μm. According to these data, the Lithofacies A sandstones show good reservoir characterisation. To date, significant hydrocarbon deposits have not been discovered in the Haymana Formation sandstones, although intensive exploratory work towards this end has been carried out in the Haymana Basin. According to this study, the proximal sandstones of the submarine-fan complex of the Haymana Formation may contain high-potential reservoirs in the Haymana Basin. In the basin, hydrocarbon is sourced from deep zones and may be capped by the proximal part of the Haymana Formation sandstones. According to this study, the Lithofacies B sandstones of the Haymana Formation are not suitable as diagenetic traps for hydrocarbon exploration in the Haymana Basin. However, the Lithofacies A sandstones may be expected to have the highest exploration success.

The Ledong submarine channel and the Dongfang submarine fan, two remarkable sedimentary systems developed during the late Miocene, are considered promising hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Yinggehai Basin of the South China Sea. A comparative study was conducted to reveal the differences between the source-to-sink characteristics of the two gas-bearing and gravity-driven depositional systems to determine their provenances, formation mechanisms and migration paths as well as their key controlling factors. The heavy mineral assemblages and detrital zircon U-Pb dating results suggest that the Ledong channel was fed by the Hainan provenance from the eastern margin, whereas the Dongfang fan was supplied by northwestern terrigenous sources. The relative sea level transgression and sufficient sediment supply triggered the delivery of deltaic loads toward the continental shelves. Seismic data show that fracture activity had a great impact on the tectono-morphologic features of the margins. During downward flow, the gravity flow along the Yingdong Slope encountered steeply falling faulted slope break belts and formed the Ledong incised channel, and the gravity flow of the Yingxi Slope moved through the gently dipping flexural break slope zone and formed the Dongfang dispersed lobe deposits. Since ca. 30 Ma, the sedimentary center has been migrating from the north to the southeast, which produced a clear control of the southeastward distribution pattern of these two sedimentary systems. Observations of cores and thin sections indicate that the rock structures and their compositions are more mature in the Dongfang channel than in the Ledong fan. This study documents significant differences and similarities by comparing the source-to-sink processes of the two gravity-driven systems that developed in the Yinggehai Basin and provides analogies for understanding similar submarine sedimentary systems that developed under similar geological contexts worldwide.

Extensive 2D multichannel seismic (~17340 km) and well data provide an opportunity to investigate the source to sink processes and triggering factors of the Late Miocene sedimentary record in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea (Sea of Japan). The sedimentary succession of the basin comprises two distinct deep-water depositional systems, which are characterised by stacked mass-transport deposits (MTDs) and subsequent submarine fan. Individual MTDs spread downslope over areas as large as ~9000 km2 with NW-SE or N-S flow direction. The deep-water fan consists of distributary channel-lobe complexes (DLCs) that are 80 km wide and 140 km long. Two major tectonic periods driven by structural deformation characterised the Late Miocene deep-water sedimentation growth. During early to middle Late Miocene (10.3-8.2 Ma), the MTDs were sourced from degraded fold triggered by slope oversteepening and seismicity on the southeastern basin margin, where the thrust-andfold belt developed. In the middle to latest Late Miocene (8.2-6.3 Ma), the DLCs were fed by canyon-channel systems on the southwestern basin margin, where the tectonic uplift of the anticline was active. Therefore, this study suggests that strike variation in shelf-margin erosional and depositional processes were caused principally by the locations and timings of tectonic deformation.
