Despite efforts to foster a more equitable gender representation, Australia's higher education sector and workforce continue to be highly segregated. This article focusses on the gendered experiences of first-in-family (FIF) students—many who are from low-socioeconomic communities—transitioning to Australian universities. In terms of the gendered nature of widening participation, we know students who are FIF will often study disciplines which align with traditional gender norms. Drawing on the First-in-Family Project (n = 48), we present the analysis of our findings in two parts. First, we provide an overview of the cohort where we analyse the gendering of degree choice of FIF students. Second, underpinned by theoretical work focussed on student gendered and classed subjectivities, we address how FIF young people negotiated classed and gendered norms during the transition to university. Our data suggest that young people engage in 'gender work' and 'class work' which informs their identities and how they make choices about their futures. This study explores the link between gender and language in single-sex schools in Colombia. Using feminist theory, the study analyzes the gendered subjectivities of English-as-a-foreign-language learners in a private school in Bogotá. It examines how heterosexuality is forced upon learners and how their subjectivities are impacted by the heteronormative discourse surrounding sex-gender learning differences. The study utilizes conversation analysis and speech act theory to examine data. The findings reveal that gendered subjectivity is complex and constitutes an ongoing struggle. There is a need for further research on gender and English teaching in educational settings, emphasizing the importance of studying sociolinguistic power relationships.

In response to a recent call on reducing social inequality and improving climate resilience, the attention has been shifted to examine power relations that influence disadvantaged groups' representation in adaptation policy and decision-making. While current studies have mainly examined micropolitics of power and agency in democratic countries or based on gender perspective, this research uses a qualitative case study approach that investigates the dynamics of power relations in climate adaptation processes in Vietnam. I draw upon the politics of adaptation framework with a focus on subjectivities and everyday resistance to scrutinize if and how local farmers negotiate, comply with or contest the centralized hierarchical structure in adaptation. Summary: Although wildlife management models across the world have since the early 1980s shifted from top-down fortress conservation to different labels of people-friendly community-based conservation, their outcomes remain contested. This paper explores how, and in whose interests, approaches to wildlife conservation in Malawi have been reconfigured from fortress conservation to market–community collaborative management. Based on qualitative field data, we demonstrate how varying levels of community participation in the processes of wildlife conservation transformed the identities and interests of powerful groups of people regarding wildlife conservation in the Majete Wildlife Reserve. We highlight how commodification and monetarization of wildlife conservation served the interests of the emergent powerful groups whilst marginalizing those of the weak. The work indicates how new community identities with regard to wildlife conservation mask the power hegemonies that dictate mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion regarding natural resource use. Australia is already experiencing climate change losses and damages. Australian governments and other institutional actors acknowledge vulnerability, yet they centre building resilience to climate change. Resilience is frequently used as a synonym for vulnerability reduction, but important ideological differences exist. Indeed, scholars have suggested that resilience, as a politico-ideological tool of subject formation, can be considered a type of governmentality. While there is much research on the political and ideological dimensions of resilience, there is less focus on illuminating how resilience, as a form of climate governmentality, interacts with vulnerability to climate change. Drawing on a climate ethnography in regional Australia, I ask how do resilience discourses and interventions influence vulnerability to climate change in regional Australia? To answer this question, I explore examples of the historical–structural, intersectional and psychosocial determinants of vulnerability, identify key resilience discourses and interventions and examine how, what I term, climate resilience governmentality is influencing vulnerability to climate change. Unable to identify clear causality, I instead show how resilience governmentality is working to reinforce rather than redress the root causes of vulnerability in regional Australia. I observe that resilience discourses emphasise shared responsibility, but in practice, this translates into a focus on individual capacities. Subjects' psychological dispositions are targeted and neoliberal rationalities are desired outcomes. Climate resilience governmentality is not linked to a withdrawal of the state. Instead, it is a top-down process based on government prioritisation, subject formation strategies and the building of non-governmental institutional landscapes to provide services. I argue that climate resilience governmentality is a form of governmental gaslighting because it denies the lived experiences of precarity, insecurity and structural violence throughout regional Australia. I suggest that significant government investment in regional communities, critical societal reflection and truth-telling are urgently needed to reduce vulnerability in regional Australia. This article explores how irrigation farmer (regante) subjectivities are constructed in direct conjunction with the production of modernist–capitalist hydrosocial territories across the Tagus and Segura river basins in central and south-east Spain. We explore the complexities and contradictions of how, at various scales of governance, authorities establish and seek to realize ideal regante subjects across time and space. We mobilize a hydrosocial territory approach, combined with feminist political ecology and hegemony literature, to explore how such ideal subjects are built through Spanish and regional legislation and policies from 1866 to 2023. Through interviews with regantes in six irrigation communities, we identify different ideal and actual regante subjects in territories interconnected by the Tagus–Segura Aqueduct. We analyze how policy shifts lead to multiple and contradictory roles and responsibilities for regante subjects, which are linked to plot modernization, agricultural professionalization, and farmer rejuvenation. These sharpen divisions between smallholders and emerging large capitalist actors. Counterhegemonic territorial proposals resist these pressures by embodying alternative values and imaginaries. We conclude that through such counterhegemonic struggles, subject construction is enriched, identifying real-life existing and future alternatives for more just hydrosocial territories. This article is concerned with unraveling the meanings about motherhood and parenting in Colombia, of mothers and health professionals participating in Facebook and WhatsApp groups, regarding empowerment and the implications of this concept in the experiences of motherhood, in perspective of women's autonomy. In addition, it problematizes the misrepresentations in some empowerment approaches that, paradoxically, mask mothers' dependence. Finally, it discusses the real possibilities, as well as the obstacles that could constitute the interactions in virtual social networks on motherhood and parenting in the construction of autonomy of its participants. In Journal sexuel d'un garçon d'aujourd'hui, Arthur Dreyfus records his sexual experiences over several years. But he doesn't limit himself to recounting his sexual intimacy; he also writes down some of his thoughts on other areas, such as relationships, writing and psychoanalysis. He generally proceeds in short narratives that can take different forms (anecdotes, poems, letters...) and are brought together to form a work of over 2000 pages. The reader is thus led into the author's systems of thought. The aim of this article is to highlight the labyrinthine construction of this work: first, we'll see how the Journal is the result of a search for identity. Next, we'll look at how this work proposes a new form of intertextuality. Finally, we look at the form of the Journal and its impact on the reader. In this article, drawing on ethnographic research on everyday life and care for people with dementia in Dutch residential care, I argue that researchers who work with people with dementia can contribute to the enactment of "interesting subject positions," thereby enriching the ways in which life with the condition is understood. The crux, I propose, is to use "hanging out" as a method and to ask "interesting questions," an approach that enables participants to let researchers know what matters to them. Critical scholars on power relations and climate change adaptation have highlighted the lack of community participation as a consequence of unbalanced power operations. Evidence about how unequal power relations and subject formation constrain public participation, however, is under-studied. In this paper, we utilised the intersection between community participation and the subjectivities lens to examine how a hierarchical political structure systematically operates to influence community engagement in adaptation and how and why local communities are included or excluded from adaptation as a result of subject-making, using Vietnam as a case study. Using 66 semi-structured interviews and ten focus group discussions involving policymakers, practitioners, local authorities, and communities, we examined how the key respondents stereotyped local roles and capacity in agricultural adaptation activities. Applying content analysis, we found that the general population in Vietnam is often framed as lacking knowledge and capacity to respond to climate impacts. Reflected through a traditional government-led model in two agricultural adaptation projects, the study showed that subtle but pervasive subjectivities and subject-making processes constrain community participation by affecting perceptions and, subsequently, actions of key stakeholders, undermining local roles and capacity in undertaking adaptation. These perpetuate the power imbalance between local communities and government entities. The findings contribute to the prevailing scholarship of climate change adaptation that, under an authoritarian regime, local capacity is undermined not only by powerholders but also by community members as they consent to government decisions. Karate can be both a martial art and a combat sport. Male and female karate athletes attended the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 (2021). Elite sport often portrays female athletes through the sexualization of their bodies, while the martial environment leaves them open to accusations of masculinization. In the process of constructing themselves as fighters, karateka women do produce new ways of performing femininities and masculinities, which is a hard-work process of negotiations, leading them to the construction of a particular habitus strictly linked to their performativity within the environment. They take part in a contested terrain that mixes several elements that are often contrasting. In this article, we aim to present factors identified with the women athletes of the Spanish Olympic karate team that affect the construction of their embodied subjectivities. We focus on two main topics, authenticity as the real deal to belonging, and a possible gendered habitus struggling with the achievement of the condition of a warrior. We carried out an ethnographic study with the Spanish Olympic karate squad supported by autoethnographic elements from the first author. We focus here on the data from double interviews with 14 women athletes and their four male coaches. Embodied subjectivity as a process of subject construction to disrupt objectification and forms of othering showed to be a challenge, a complex task, and embedded in contradictions. Karate women's embodied subjectivities are built in the transit between resisting and giving in. Despite several difficulties, through awareness and reflection on limitations, karateka may occupy their place as subjects, exerting agency, feeling empowered, and fighting consciously against the naturalized 'tide'. This article pays attention to the gendered resource struggles and changing division of labor of the feminized shea fruit in Burkina Faso. The aim of this qualitative study is to explore how the increased demand for shea has affected gendered natural resource access and divisions of labor in the local. Shea, often described as 'women's gold', is one of few natural resources which women control harvest, processing and earnings. The increased demand for shea on the global market has therefore been presented as a benefactor for women's economic empowerment in Burkina Faso. Yet, studies have pointed to that women seem to be sidelined in the shea commodity chain. This study explores how gendered natural resource struggles are formed in the local shea commodity chain by departing from three principles of gender analysis, access and control, labor division and subjectivities. The data was collected through ethnographic fieldwork in the two rural villages of Boessen and Tonogo in Burkina Faso. The analysis sheds light on the particularities in how men's shea practices form masculinities and rearrange gendered labor norms. The study moreover shows how contestations of male involvement is done by targeting manhood and labor norm perceptions. Male involvement both re-produces hegemonic masculinities where male shea control delimits women's income possibilities. For the last three decades, public agricultural policies in France and in Europe have progressively integrated environmental objectives through a wide range of instruments. Whereas a large body of research has examined the extent to which the greening of agricultural policies has shaped farmers' decisions and practices, few studies have considered how these normative policy orientations may trigger tensions within the agricultural bureaucratic apparatus, and notably among local farm advisors who play the role of interface bureaucrats. In this article, we have explored how farm advisors from different types of advisory structures develop multiple subjectivities and deal with the tensions that they face when navigating between policy goals, professional norms, and their personal beliefs and values. Drawing on plural qualitative methods, we focus on the implementation of two national public agroecological schemes in southwest France that support the emergence and facilitation of farmers' groups engaged towards agroecology. We find that organizational strategies shape the type of tensions advisors face and their ability to manage these. The type of policy instrument we considered also matters in the forms of creative bricolage that farm advisors develop: in the case of organizational instruments based on farmers' participation, maintaining relationships with farmers is critical to give meaning to their work. If such instruments enlarge the creative space of farm advisors, the schemes we examined also hold in-built limitations in empowering farm advisors as they fail to address the structural constraints that shape agroecological transitions.

Understanding the scale and nature of changes that have occurred in Belarus since the 2020 protests, not only at the political but also at the societal level, is crucial to our ability to interpret the role that Belarus has played in the current crisis in the region and to understand the potential for, and possible directions of, long-term change. This article provides interpretive frameworks for studying the Belarusian protests and their contribution to shaping new subjectivities in Belarusian society whose impact may go beyond altering state-society relations. The article reflects on relationality and eventfulness as key concepts for understanding shifts toward a consolidation of individuals' autonomy from the state. It introduces the collection of articles in a special issue by reflecting on different disciplinary perspectives and approaches to the significance and aftermath of the 2020 protests, including new religious subjectivities, new emotional styles, and new gender roles. These articles provide sustenance for larger debates in the social sciences about the ways in which new subjectivities emerge in, refract through, and consolidate or dissipate after protest waves. How does the growing precariousness in employment and labor relations impact the construction of subjectivities and the personal and professional narratives of Portuguese working women? This research focuses on one of the distinctive aspects of this "class" - the precariat, which refers to highly educated young adults with jobs below these qualifications -, with the relations of production. More specifically, it focuses on women who believed that higher education would allow them to have a safe career/work trajectory. We conducted interviews with highly educated young women and adult women with precarious jobs, who perform functions below their academic qualifications. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis techniques, with the aid of the software Atlas/TI. The results show how precariousness means not only the uncertainty of salaried work but also, and above all, uncertainty as a way of life, of forms of subjection, and of bodies. This uncertainty extends to the whole sphere of life, producing subjectivities marked by anxiety, stress, pain, vulnerability, frustration, and hopelessness concerning the future. Do elite strategists always project powerfulness in how they talk about their strategy work? Whilst the strategy discourse literature has often assumed that those occupying senior strategy positions project strength in how they negotiate power through discourse, our findings challenge and elaborate this assumption by revealing aspects of vulnerability and powerlessness in how they talk about themselves as elite strategists. Based on the strategy discourse of 48 elite strategists around the world, our findings extend the literature at the intersection of power and subjectivity, strategy discourse, and strategy work in three ways. First, we illuminate surprising vulnerability and powerlessness in some elite strategists' discourses about themselves, an element that goes beyond the assumption of exclusivity and influence embedded in current studies. Second, we contribute to the discursive opening up of the strategist role itself, showing how elite strategists position themselves in contrast to a variety of 'others' in strategy work beyond traditional hierarchies. Finally, we advance understandings on discursive competence in the strategy professional field, illuminating new ways in which its discursive competitiveness and continuity is manifest. The representational politics of European colonial cinema was effectively decisive in shaping the values and ideologies of the articulated discourse of colonialism in representing cultural encounters and racial differences. This article attempts to analyse and explore how the colonial cinema of the early twentieth century produced a biased politics of representation and persistent modes of constructing North Africans within the confines of an orientalising colonial imaginary that turns cultural encounters into a display of power and superiority. It addresses the ways cinematic representation of North Africans accentuates the homogenising discourse of domination, the legitimization of conquest and the articulation of intercultural encounters on a stereotypical and judgmental basis. While a part of this cinema kept (re)visiting the same classical tropes of exoticism and racial inferiority of the native cultures, favouring the stereotypical portrayals and racial prejudices of "others" that blatantly rest on the "us and them" dichotomy, the other part tried to introduce a sort of paradigm shift that complicates the unquestionable presence of colons in North Africa and interrogates the parameters of their colonial identity. This article argues that colonial cinema of the 1930S has introduced a range of Western protagonists and colons with complex forms of identifications, questionable moral consciousness, and conflicted colonial subjectivities. There are endless styles of commoning, and not a single perfect way to manage the commons. Each commons is unique, with its own context, aims, membership and culture. How can we explain the diversity of commoning practices? This paper proposes a conceptual framework for the process of commoning: the Circle of Commoning. This framework identifies two interrelated dynamics in the practice of commoning: internal and external. It identifies three key elements of commoning: subjectivities, visions and social relations. These elements are interconnected, specific to a time and place and always relate to broader political and cultural contexts. Using the case of UK community-led housing as an illustration, the framework explains how the interplay between the internal and external factors determines the nature of the commons. This framework is applicable to all types of commons and other types of social organisations, and bridges the existing gap in the literature between studies focusing on small scale practices and those concerned with macro socio-economic contexts.

Within the neoliberal university, academics become positioned around market-driven managerialist ideologies and the techniques enacting those principles. Audit cultures actively and continuously measure and shape academic subjectivities defined by a specific kind of success. The market-driven individualistic model can conflict with ethical ideals and longings for self-expression, while the mismatch between institutional goals and personal values creates an academic self that is pulled in conflicting directions. We become subjects of the discourse but we can limit our subjectivity and develop authentic insight. In this paper, we engage in a process of embodied making. We create textual and tactile self-portraits as a way of pushing back at neoliberal subjectivities, and to make visible our multiple selves. Although we recognize that we are always a part of what we resist, we use making as a way to create micro-resistances for our own renewal. Our self-portrait assemblages and stories are ambiguous and fluid but capture a view of selves hidden beneath the professional self. We are reminded that we are creative beings, and that there is room within neoliberalism to open intentional spaces. We may not always succeed in seeing our contradictory identities, yet we are able to occasionally capture glimpses of our shifting selves.

This paper examines relational Mardi Gras street parade practices and performances of the Camel Toe Lady Steppers dance troupe with one another, other individuals, and groups—an assembly of plurality that is embodied, provisional, and performative. Using ethnographic methodology and an intersectional approach that emphasizes space, place, scale, and movement, nonfiction composite storytelling demonstrates the potential of public space in challenging normative individual and collective subjectivities as well as the lived gendered, raced, and classed Mardi Gras and urban landscapes in New Orleans. This case is relevant because it reveals how situated agency is central to the active and public (re)working of intersectional subjectivities and social-spatial integration, experienced and witnessed, not emphasized in other studies. The correspondence of Etienne-François Geoffroy (1672-1731), a famous Parisian physician, allows us to approach medical data in the 18th century from different perspectives. Firstly, epistolary consultations actually involve some material reality of the data that will “travel” from the experience of the diseased body to the written words, from the patient to the doctor. Then, there is a dichotomy between the medical data produced by patients and their kin – in so far as all information seems to become data in the absence of any physical consultation with a doctor – and the medical data obtained from practitioners and the information that will actually make sense in the explanation of the pathology provided by Etienne-François Geoffroy. Medical data then take on characteristics that are strongly linked to the context in which they are developed, be it individual or collective, profane or scholarly.

Este artículo se detiene en el análisis de contenido desde una perspectiva interseccional de dos series de televisión del presente siglo, como son Lost (Perdidos, –Abrams, Lieber y Lindelof 2004-2010–) y Yellowjackets (Lyle y Nickerson, 2021-presente). Se eligen porque parten de premisas similares: tras un accidente de avión, y sin la espera de un rescate, un grupo tiene que organizarse para sobrevivir en un ambiente hostil. En este sentido, nos interesa conocer, ¿cómo se imagina la nueva sociedad?, ¿se repiten los sistemas de dominación de las sociedades de origen o se crean nuevas fórmulas? Por otro lado, ambas narraciones cuentan con diferencias considerables en cuanto a contexto, producción y reparto que nos llevan a inquirir: ¿Dónde se pone el foco cuando las personas protagonistas (no) forman parte del sujeto político normativo?, ¿aquellas marcadas como otras se representan desde otras formas de hacer? Como conclusiones, destacar que Yellowjackets introduce miradas no hegemónicas que permiten incluir papeles que rehúyen de estereotipos y roles, así como temáticas feminizadas invisibilizadas. This article looks at the content analysis from an intersectional perspective of two television series of the present century: Lost (Abrams, Lieber y Lindelof 2004-2010) and Yellowjackets(Lyle y Nickerson, 2021-present). They are chosen because they startfrom similar premises: after a plane crash, and without the expectation of a rescue, a group has to organise itself to survive in a hostile environment. In this sense, we are interested in knowing how the new society is imagined: are the systems of domination of the original societies repeated or are new formulas created? Furthermore, both narratives have considerable differences in terms of context, production and casting that lead us to ask: Where is the focus placed when the protagonists are (not) part of the normative political subject? Are these people marked as others represented from other ways of doing? As conclusions, it is worth highlighting that Yellowjackets introduces non-hegemonic gazes that allow for the inclusion of roles that shun stereotypes and roles, as well as feminised themes that have been made invisible. However, this change does not allow us to overcome the individual and collective melancholic paralysis that runs through both productions, repeating the structures of power and domination that dynamite an opportunity to advance towards a utopian society.

Eastern European migrants' affective relationship with the idea of working class remains poorly understood. This article demonstrates how neoliberal ideology – which shaped postsocialist change – produces certain affective class processes among Central and Eastern European migrants. Migrants often do not share class ramifications in Latvia or the UK but divert their felt class towards the notion of a better life. The article challenges the 'East' and 'West' dichotomy found in much contemporary class analysis by examining specific spatiotemporal relations, transformations and subjectivities. The qualitative data derive from my long-term (2010–2018) engagement with Latvian migrants in the UK. I offer nuanced insights into labour migrants' affective class subjectivities at the bodily scale, spatial scale and temporal scale. Aiming to bring another look at the theoretical-methodological discussion about the territory, valuing the subjectivities present in the ways in which it is transformed and constituted in contemporaneity, we propose, in this article, to think about the territory from the spirituality of the New Age. Thus, demonstrating that through materiality, there is a highly invisible movement that occurs in the field of ideas, making the territory, undeniably, (i)materiality. The empirical field was based on semi-structured interviews for which the city of Santa Cruz do Sul (RS) was defined as the space/time in which spiritual experiences were the object of the respective study. In the data analysis it was noticed that territorialization in the New Age affects individuals other than just spiritual seekers, which indicates that the territory of spiritualities is not only the landscape that is apparent to our eyes, but it necessarily assumes immaterialities, other subjectivities, and also, still other subjects, producers of other territories: a new dynamic to the movement of totality; therefore, a New Age of territories. The discussions around education and the geography of the school space contemplate how the students experience this normatized space controlled by the State Although timeless, today these discussions reflect the fragility of treating the subjects that inhabit this space in a homogeneous way, neglecting their subjectivities and identities. Thus, Humanist Geography, through phenomenology and hermeneutics, adheres to the study to access the social-spatial experience of the subjects, that is, how Heideggerian being-there (dasein) and dwelling (dwelling) express ways of seeing and being in the world. Through the notion of Themes, the study proposes to identify possibilities of connecting these experiences of the world with the norms that control the becoming and dwelling of the school space, and it is in the meantime that themes such as obligation, professionalization, socialization, knowledge, and technique are interpreted. The interdisciplinarity and the lived experience endowed with subjectivities are presented as alternative means to counteract the positivist and generalizing treatment that sustains the control/guidance materials of the school space.
