The residual intake and gain (RIG) aims to select animals that present low feed intake in relation to the expected. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of selection for RIG with performance and carcass traits in Nellore cattle. Initially, residual feed intake (RFI) and residual gain (RG) were determined. From this, the RIG was calculated, and the animals were classified as efficient and inefficient for RIG. The efficient animals for RIG showed higher daily weight gain (DWG), Longissimus muscle area (LMA), and mid-test metabolic body weight (MMBW) than the inefficient ones. No significant correlations were found between subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), marbling (MAR), LMA, MMBW, and the RIG. Thus, it’s concluded that the RIG is a measure that can be used to identify and select animals with higher rates of DWG and LMA without changes in the dry matter intake (DMI), SFT, and MAR. However, this index should still be observed with caution, as it may be dependent on body size. Based on the findings, the selection of animals according to the RIG can be an important factor to generate phenotypic evolution in characteristics such as weight gain and rib eye area without adverse effects on the carcass fat deposition. The present study aimed to (a) assess normal-weight obesity (NWO) and general obesity prevalence among women of different ages residing in urban areas, (b) evaluate subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) in women with NWO, (c) establish SFT cutoff points for distinguishing NWO, and (d) explore eating habits linked to NWO. This cross-sectional study with 184 women aged 18–65 with NWO, normal weight without obesity (NWNO), overweight and general obesity included evaluation of body composition, SFT assessment using 2.5 MHz A-mode ultrasound (ISAK protocol, 7 sites) and lifestyle inquiries. The curvilinear relationship between body fat and BMI rendered BMI an unreliable indicator of adiposity in women with normal weight (BMI < 25 kg/m2). Almost 30% of women with a high body fat percentage (BFP ≥ 30%) were misclassified when BMI was used to measure adiposity. The overall obesity prevalence defined by BFP was almost four times higher than that defined by BMI (56.0 vs. 18.0%, p = 1 × 10−4). Women with NWO, overweight and general obesity shared a similar SFT profile and eating habits, setting them apart from those with NWNO. The mean SFT was the most reliable NWO predictor, with a threshold set at 12 mm equal to the 66th percentile. Mean SFT accurately classified 85% of women with NWO. While age did not significantly affect subcutaneous fat accumulation, total fat levels increased with age (R2 = 0.07 and R2 = 0.19, padj = 0.1 and padj = 9 × 10−4). Higher NWO prevalence in middle-aged women was linked to age-related increase in fat mass and decrease in fat-free mass. Engaging in regular physical activity and reducing snack consumption effectively countered age-related changes in body composition (padj < 0.05). Women under 45 years who consumed sweet bakery items, fast food, and snacks more frequently showed higher BFP and NWO status (padj < 0.05). Prevention strategies should focus on monitoring body composition and promoting healthy behaviors, particularly among young women transitioning into adulthood and women over 45 years. Summary: Background: This study aimed to examine the correlation between subcutaneous fat thickness and chemoport-related infection and to determine the risk factors that lead to complications associated with chemoport. Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 363 patients with chemoport insertion between May 2018 and May 2022. The patients were classified into three groups, with 121 patients in each group, based on the tertiles of subcutaneous fat thickness measured in the computed tomography (CT) scan. The incidence of short-term and long-term complications, including dislocation, infection, and malfunction, were obtained and compared between the three groups. The risk factors of chemoport-related complications were analysed in multivariate analysis. Results: The incidence of infection in the low, middle, and high subcutaneous fat thickness groups were 1.7%, 3.3%, and 0%, respectively (P = 0.131). No short-term complications occurred in this study group. After one year of follow-up, 11 patients (3.0%) had long-term complications; 6 patients (1.7%) developed chemoport infection, while five patients (1.4%) had chemoport dislocation. In multivariate analysis, the risk of dislocation was significantly higher when insertion was performed via the left internal jugular vein (OR = 9.87, P=0.033). Conclusions: The thickness of subcutaneous fat does not significantly correlate with the incidence of chemoport infection, and placement of the port on the left side of the chest wall via the left internal jugular vein is the risk factor for chemoport dislocation.

The objective was to analyze the carcasses of bovine from employer and non-employer livestock systems. Slaughter data was collected in slaughterhouse located in the central part of the State of Rio Grande do Sul during four years. A total of 437,332 and 49,029 carcasses from employers' and non-employers' properties were evaluated, respectively. The differentiation between the livestock models was made based on the existence or not of employees. Non-employer farmers declared themselves non-employers, while employers presented documentation and regularity of employees on the farms. Data were submitted to analysis of variance to assess the effect between the production systems and their interactions with sex, months, and years, with the batch being the experimental unit. The cold carcass weight in males and females differed between the production systems, being the employer system higher than the non-employer system. At maturity, carcasses from the employer system were lower than carcasses marketed by non-employer system. The thickness of subcutaneous fat was lower in carcasses from non-employer system than in carcasses employer systems, with less use of the same the quality programs. Except for January, cold carcass weight differed (P<0.05) during the rest of the year between production systems. The finishing grade only differ (P<0.05) in the months of February and December, being higher for the employer system. Objective: Aim of this study is to evaluate the association between subcutaneous fat thickness (SCFT) and biochemical recurrence (BCR) in patients who have undergone radical prostatectomy (RP). Methods: Study included 52 patients who had non-metastatic prostate cancer (PCa), underwent RP at our center between April 2015 and January 2020. All patients had a full abdomen computed tomography (CT) scan within six months prior to surgery. Measurements of fat, muscle, and tissue were evaluated by two radiologists, and binary logistic regression analysis was performed to determine factors influencing BCR. SCFT was identified as the only radiological factor influencing recurrence. A cut-off value (25.6) was determined using an ROC curve, and patients were divided into two groups based on this value. Results: In Group 1 (SCFT < 25.6), the median recurrence time was 39 (3-65) months, and the median follow-up time was 40.5 (17-65) months. In Group 2 (SCFT ≥ 25.6), the median recurrence time was 20.5 (3-58) months, and the median follow-up time was 43 (12-69) months. The one-year and three-year recurrence-free survival rates were 82.1% and 78.4% for Group 1, respectively, while they were 62.5% and 52.2% for Group 2, respectively (p=0.047). Conclusions: The ability to predict recurrence in PCa is crucial for the management and treatment of the disease. Our study, which demonstrates a significant relationship between SCFT and BCR, suggests that radiological evaluation and measurements will be further utilized in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of the disease. Study Design: A retrospective matched case–control study. Objective: This study aims to investigate the value of Subcutaneous Lumbar Spine Index (SLSI) as a predictor of early surgical site infection (SSI) after lumbar intervertebral fusion surgery. Methods: A retrospective case–control study was performed on patients who underwent transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2019 in a single institution. Cases were defined as those who developed early SSI according to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention criteria, and controls were matched from those patients without early SSI using the following matched criteria: gender, age, time of surgery and diabetes. Subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and SLSI were measured on preoperative MRI mid-sagittal T2 weighted images. Results: A total of 3615 patients who underwent TLIF were enrolled in this study. Thirty-three patients were included in early SSI, and sixty-six patients were selected as matched controls. Univariate analysis indicated that fusion levels (P =.007), operation time (P =.022), obesity (P =.013), SFT (P =.002) and SLSI (P =.001) were significantly associated with early SSI. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that multilevel fusion levels (P =.021), obesity (P =.035), a large SFT (P =.026) and a high SLSI (P =.012) were independent risk factors. Body mass index (BMI) and SLSI were moderately correlated (r 2 =.55). ROC curve demonstrated that SLSI was more sensitive than SFT to predict the early SSI. Conclusion: SLSI is a novel radiological risk factor for early SSI development and is a better indicator than SFT to predict early SSI risk after lumbar intervertebral fusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to determine whether amplitude modulation (A-mode) ultrasound (US) provides accurate and reliable measurements comparable to those obtained using brightness modulation (B-mode) US under diverse conditions. Thirty healthy participants (15 women and 15 men) underwent measurements of subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), muscle thickness (MT), and muscle quality (MQ) in the trapezius and biceps brachii muscles using both US modes before and after exercises designed to stimulate the respective muscles. Among the three key indices, the results demonstrated the high validity of the A-mode, with minimal mean differences (MDs) between the two devices less than 0.91 mm and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) exceeding 0.95 for all measures. In addition, the correlation coefficients between the error scores and average scores for the trapezius and biceps brachii suggested no evidence of systematic error. The trapezius MT and MQ significantly increased, and the biceps brachii MT significantly increased after the exercises (p < 0.05). Notably, both the A- and B-modes exhibited the same trend in these post-exercise changes in the muscle. This study suggests that low-cost and low-resolution A-mode US provides measurements of SFT, MT, and MQ similar to the more expensive, high-resolution B-mode imaging. Our objective was to use measures of intake and productive performance to adjust prediction models for the carcass traits of non-castrated Nellore cattle finished in a feedlot. Individual data from 168 non-castrated male Nellore steers finished in feedlot between the years 2016–2021 were used. Descriptive statistical analyzes and Pearson correlation coefficients were performed. The outliers were tested by evaluating the studentized residuals in relation to the values predicted by the equations. Residues that were outside the range of -2.5 to 2.5 were removed. The goodness of fit of the developed equations was evaluated by the coefficients of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE). Models for carcass yield, subcutaneous fat thickness, ribeye area, and shear force were adjusted. Means of 53.5% carcass yield, 4.8 mm subcutaneous fat thickness, 73 cm2 loin eye area, and 8.1 kg shear force were observed. The observed average intakes were 9.9 kg/day of dry matter, 3.3 kg/day of neutral detergent fiber content, 1.5 kg/day of crude protein, and 7.1 kg/day of total digestible nutrients. The average confinement time was 113 days, the average total weight gain was 152.2 kg and the average daily gain was 1.35 kg/day. Intake measures significantly correlated with shear force and subcutaneous fat thickness and ribeye area. Carcass yield was significantly correlated with total weight gain, feedlot time, and hot carcass weight. Measures of nutrient intake, performance, and confinement time can be used as predictors of carcass yield, ribeye area, fat thickness, and shear force of non-castrated Nellore cattle finished in a feedlot. The prediction equations for ribeye area, carcass yield, subcutaneous fat thickness, and shear force showed sufficient precision and accuracy for non-castrated Nellore cattle finished in confinement systems under tropical conditions. Objective: Current evidence regarding the safety of abdominal subcutaneous injections in pregnant women is limited. In this study, we developed a predictive model for abdominal skin–subcutaneous fat thickness (S-ScFT) by gestational periods (GP) in pregnant women. Methods: A total of 354 cases were measured for S-ScFT. Three machine learning algorithms, namely deep learning, random forest, and support vector machine, were used for S-ScFT predictive modeling and factor analysis for each abdominal site. Data analysis was performed using SPSS and RapidMiner softwares. Results: The deep learning algorithm best predicted the abdominal S-ScFT. The common important variables in all three algorithms for the prediction of abdominal S-ScFT were menarcheal age, prepregnancy weight, prepregnancy body mass index (categorized), large fetus for gestational age, and alcohol consumption. Conclusion: Predicting the safety of subcutaneous injections during pregnancy could be beneficial for managing gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnant women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this research was to evaluate the performance and carcass characteristics of immunocastrated cattle, in comparison to castrated and non-castrated cattle supplemented on pasture. 36 bovines were used, distributed in a completely randomized design, in 3 treatments: non-castrated animals (ANC), animals castrated late by the surgical method (ACC) and immunocastrated animals (AIC), with 12 replicates each. Immunocastration was performed following the protocol of two doses of the immunocastrating vaccine, with an interval of 60 days, promoting a castrated effect of 120 days. The animals were kept on mixed pasture in an extensive rearing system using rotational grazing, they received mineral supplement in the first 3 months and specific feed for the fattening season in the subsequent 3 months, according to the property’s standards. The total experimental period was 180 days. Data were hidden from the normality test, analysis of variance and mean comparisons were performed using the Tukey test, except for the variable degree of finishing, which was maintained at the chi-square test, at 5%. Average daily weight and total weight gains, hot and cold carcass weights and hot and cold carcass yield did not show statistical differences (P>0.05) for animals submitted to different treatments. However, the cooling loss was lower in immunocastrated animals (P0.05) were verified for the animals submitted to different treatments. Final carcass pH was higher (P0.05) from non-castrated animals. Immunocastrated animals, in a grazing system receiving supplementation, showed similar gains in weight and carcass weight in relation to non-castrated and surgically castrated animals, however, with lower losses to carcass cooling.

Purpose: Minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MIS) in obese pzatients is technically challenging due to the use of longer tube retractors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the thickness of the soft tissue and subcutaneous fat on complications, revisions, and patient-reported functional outcomes after MIS. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 148 consecutive patients who underwent minimally invasive lumbar decompression at our institute between 2013 and 2017 and had at least one year of follow-up. Analysis was performed five times, each time the study group was defined by another measure of adiposity: BMI > 30, skin to lamina distance at the site of surgery and at L4 > 6 cm, and subcutaneous fat thickness at the site of surgery and at L4 > 3 cm. Outcomes included intraoperative complications (durotomy or neurological deficit), possibly inadequate decompression (residual disc, reoperation), length of stay, return to the emergency room or readmission, postoperative medical complications, and functional outcomes: visual analog scores for back and leg pain, and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Results: Patients with a thicker layer soft tissue had a significantly higher burden of comorbidities than controls, including higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (p = 0.002), diabetes (p < 0.001), hypertension (p < 0.001) and higher ASA scores (p = 0.002). Nevertheless, there was no significant difference between the patient groups in surgical and medical complications, functional outcomes, and other assessed outcomes. Conclusion: Our results indicate that minimally invasive lumbar decompression is safe and effective for patients with a thick layer of soft tissue and subcutaneous fat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundExercise during pregnancy is closely related to maternal and infant health. Previous studies in developed countries have linked maternal exercise during pregnancy with newborn body weight as well as subcutaneous fat thickness. However, the relevant studies in China are limited, and the conclusions remain inconsistent. ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of maternal exercise during pregnancy on neonatal weight and subcutaneous fat thickness. MethodsBased on the Shanghai Birth Cohort, 959 maternal-infant pairs were included in this study. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to collect average weekly frequency and daily minutes of walking in the first and second trimesters, and entropy weight method was used to calculate the cumulative exercise index in the two trimesters. Birth weight was measured using a calibrated weigh scale. Subcutaneous fat thickness was measured at abdomen, scapula, and triceps with a Harpenden skinfold caliper for all newborns and the sum of the thickness for the three sites was then calculated. A multiple linear regression model was employed to estimate the relationships of cumulative exercise index during pregnancy with neonatal body weight and subcutaneous fat thickness. Subgroup analyses stratified by pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and sex of newborns were also performed. ResultsThe mean age of pregnant women was (28.5±3.8) years, and the pre-pregnancy BMI was (21.4±3.0) kg·m−2. Newborn boys were slightly more than newborn girls (54.3% vs 45.7%), and the neonatal weight was (3374.0±427.5) g. The means of newborns' abdominal, scapular, and triceps subcutaneous fat thickness were (4.4±1.3), (5.4±1.4), and (6.0±1.5) mm, respectively, and the sum of subcutaneous fat thickness was (15.8±3.9) mm. In the first and second trimesters, 77.3% and 88.7% of pregnant women walked 4 d per week and more, respectively; the daily minutes of walking was (36.9±27.2) min and (43.3±26.3) min, respectively; the cumulative exercise index was 25.6±17.7 and 35.9±21.1, respectively. Simple Summary: The growing body of evidence for a Developmental Origin of Health and Diseases (DOHaD) emphasizes the need to assess the role of fetal and neonatal factors in canine overweight which affects nearly 40% of adult dogs. The purpose of the current study was to examine the association between birth weight and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) at adulthood, measured by ultrasonography, in a population of purebred Labrador dogs. We used a linear mixed-effects model by adjusting for sex, age, neuter status and the anatomical sites of SFT measurements (abdomen, flanks and lumbar region). The results suggest that, as in other species, dogs with the lowest birth weights have a greater thickness of subcutaneous fat at adulthood than the others. These findings highlight the importance of fetal life in adult health in the canine species. They suggest that birth weight is an important health indicator of long-term impact. It should be considered in particular in overweight management plans: puppies born with low birth weight should be identified as being at higher risk of overweight and their owners should be encouraged to enter their dogs in specific weight control plans from an early stage in life. Background: Laparoscopic colorectal surgery (LCRS) requires a small laparotomy at the umbilicus. The wound is small and inconspicuous, but if the patient develops an umbilical incisional hernia (UIH), the wound is visible and the patient suffers from symptoms of discomfort. However, the incidence of UIH after LCRS and its risk factors are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors for UIH after LCRS for colorectal cancer. Methods: This was a single‐centre retrospective study of 135 patients with colorectal cancer, conducted at our hospital from April 2013 to March 2019. The diagnosis of UIH was based on computed tomography and physical examination findings. Preoperative patient data such as enlargement of the umbilical orifice (EUO), subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and intraperitoneal thickness (IPT) were collected and analysed using univariate and multivariate analyses for the presence of risk factors for UIH. Results: A total of 135 patients who underwent LCRS were analysed. The incidence of UIH was 20.7%. Univariate analysis revealed significantly high body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 (P = 0.032), EUO (P < 0.001), SFT ≥18 mm (P = 0.011), and IPT ≥61 mm (P < 0.01) in the UIH group. Multivariate analysis revealed significant differences in EUO (P < 0.001), SFT ≥18 mm (P = 0.046) and IPT ≥61 mm (P = 0.022). Conclusion: EUO was the most important risk factor for UIH, followed by IPT and SFT. These findings are predictive indicators of the development of UIH after LCRS and can be assessed objectively and easily with preoperative computed tomography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The slaughter and carcass features of four breeds named Limousin (LI), Charolais (CH), Angus (AN), and Hereford (HE) were examined. Nine calves from each breed were slaughtered at an average age of 18.5 months. The animals were weighed before slaughter, and the slaughter weights as well as some body measurements of the animals were recorded. The dismemberment of the carcasses was performed after a resting period of 24 h at + 4 °C. The slaughter weights were 581.89, 590.72, 577.67, and 610.89 kg, respectively. Chilled carcass weights were 348.26, 346.91, 327.60, and 338.10 kg, respectively, with no significant differences among breeds. Dressing percentages were 59.89, 58.75, 56.71, and 55.33%, and the valuable meat ratios were 27.89, 27.66, 24.45, and 24.32%, respectively. Carcass bone ratios were 13.89, 14.17, 14.64, and 14.61%, respectively. The longissimus muscle areas (LMA) were 97.46, 102.29, 81.05, and 83.93 cm2, and the subcutaneous fat thickness was 0.38, 0.43, 1.00, and 1.32 cm, respectively. Significant differences were observed among breeds in terms of these characteristics. Carcass weight was highest in LI, and LI and CH breeds had higher carcass yields than the other two breeds. Although HE had the highest slaughter weight, it showed the lowest carcass yield. Whilst more meat was obtained from LI and CH, the highest fat and bone ratios were determined in HE and AN. Background: pH, subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), and color are fundamental variables to define the organoleptic characteristics of meat. However, multivariate relationships of those traits remain unexplored in bovine meat. Objective: To investigate the multivariate relationships among pH, subcutaneous fat thickness, and color parameters in bovine meat using canonical correlation analysis. Methods: A dataset containing 173 individual records of pH, SFT, and color parameters (a*: intensity of red color, b*: intensity of yellow color, and L*: lightness) from five Brazilian beef cut types (Breed: Nellore; cuts: acém, contrafilé, fraldinha, patinho and picanha) was constructed. Context: The body condition score (BCS) is an easily measured, fast, inexpensive, and non-invasive tool to estimate the amount of body fat and to evaluate the nutritional status of dairy cows. Aims: The aim of this study was to validate BCS in primiparous Gyr cows by using ultrasound measurements of subcutaneous fat (FT). Methods: Body weight, BCS (score of 1–9) and FT measured at five body sites (FT1–FT5) were recorded during the prepartum and postpartum periods. Linear regression of FT on BCS and Pearson's correlations were used. Key results: The correlations between body weight and FT measures ranged from 0.49 to 0.63 and from 0.51 to 0.64 during the pre- and postpartum periods respectively, while the correlations between BCS and FT ranged from 0.69 to 0.82 and from 0.67 to 0.78 in the two periods. The BCS better reflected the variation in FT before and after calving than did body weight. Linear regression models were used to explore the relationship between BCS and FT measurements considering the former as the predictor variable. The coefficients of determination (R 2) obtained for the prepartum variables ranged from 0.48 to 0.67. The highest R 2 was obtained for the model that included FT measured in the lumbar region midway between the last rib and tuber coxae (hook; FT4) as the response variable. The R 2 of the models whose response variables were obtained during the postpartum period ranged from 0.45 to 0.60. The highest R 2 was observed when the pelvic region midway between the tuber coxae (hook) and tuber ischii (pin; FT2) was used as a response variable. Conclusions: The correlations between BCS and FT validate the use of BCS obtained by visual assessment as a tool for evaluating fat reserves in Gyr dams before calving and during first lactation. Among the FT measurements, FT2 and FT4 are interesting because both are easy to measure and showed higher correlations and coefficients of determination with BCS before calving and lactation. Implications: The BCS is an accessible tool for producers that requires only training of the evaluator and that is economically viable since no special equipment is needed. This study is very important because it is a study that evaluated and validated the body condition score of primiparous zebu cows with weight and fat thickness measurements by carcass ultrasonography, using several measures cited in the literature. It is a methodology accessible to the producer, requires technical training but at a low cost in relation to the ultrasound of the carcass. Background: It has been observed that gluteal-femoral adipose tissue has a protective effect against risk factors for cardiovascular disease but has not yet been concluded how different evaluation methods of fat distribution affect the results. Methods: To test the hypothesis that B-mode ultrasound-measured subcutaneous adipose tissue distribution is associated with cardiovascular risk factors, 326 Japanese unmedicated postmenopausal women aged 50-70 years were analyzed. Subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness at 6 sites (anterior and posterior aspects of trunk, upper-arm, and thigh) and serum total (TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) was measured, and a ratio of HDLC to TC (HDLC/TC) was calculated. We used Bayesian linear regression with 4 separate models with each model predicting HDLC/TC. Results: Our first model provided evidence for an inverse correlation (r = -0.23) between ultrasound measured body fat (6 site measurement) and HDLC/TC. The second model noted evidence for an inverse correlation between trunk fat and HDLC/TC and found evidence for the null with respect to the correlation between thigh fat and HDLC/TC. Therefore, we added thigh fat to the null model to produce Distribution Model 2. Within this model, we noted an inverse correlation (r = -0.353) between trunk fat and HDLC/TC. Our last model determined that within the trunk fatness, the abdominal area (anterior trunk) was a larger predictor than the subscapular site (posterior trunk). Conclusion: These results support the evidence that ultrasound-measured abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness is a non-invasive predictor for monitoring the risk for dyslipidemia in postmenopausal women. To clarify the progression of muscle loss in nursing home residents, frail women (n = 16; age: 85 ± 9 years; residence time: 764 days) were assessed for physical activity, caloric intake, and site-specific muscle thickness (MTH) and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) using B-mode ultrasound at nine anatomical sites at four intervals over one year. Height, body weight, and BMI did not change. Physical activity (246 steps/ day) and nutritional intake (1,441 kcal, 60.3 g protein/day) were unaltered throughout the study. Subjects experienced a significant, progressive loss of muscle indicated by decrements in anterior upper arm (20%), posterior upper arm (25%), abdomen (20%), subscapular (33%), anterior thigh (15%), posterior thigh (22%), anterior lower leg (11%), posterior lower leg (13%), and forearm (15%) MTH. At study inception, prevalence of sarcopenia was related to muscle loss in the upper leg, while upper body muscle wasting contributed to sarcopenia later and was unrelated to physical activity, nutritional input, or duration of residence. Background Context: Surgical site infections (SSIs) after spinal fusion surgery increase healthcare costs, morbidity and mortality. Routine measures of obesity fail to consider site specific fat distribution.Purpose: To assess the association between the spine adipose index and deep surgical site infection and determine a threshold value for spine adipose index that can assist in preoperative risk stratification in patients undergoing posterior instrumented lumbar fusion (PILF).Study Design/setting: Multicenter retrospective case-control study.Patient Sample: We reviewed patients who underwent PILF from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2018.Outcome Measures: All patients developing a deep primary incisional or organ-space SSI within 90 days of surgery as per US Center for Disease Control and Prevention criteria were identified. We gathered potential pre-operative and intra-operative deep infection risk factors for each patient. A 1:1 match was performed using the following criteria: gender, age (±3 y), ethnicity, date of surgery (± 1 y), and hospital location of surgery. Spine adipose index was measured on pre-operative mid-sagittal cuts of T2 weighted MRI scans. Each measurement was repeated twice by three authors in a blinded fashion, with each series of measurement separated by a period of at least six weeks.Methods: Stepwise binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between SAI and the development of deep SSI. Separate logistic regression models were used for body mass index (BMI) and direct measures of subcutaneous fat thickness. Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis was used to determine the optimal value for SAI, and subsequent risk ratios were calculated using the identified threshold. Intra- and inter-observer reliabilities were assessed using intra-class coefficients.Results: Forty-two patients were included in final analysis, with twenty-one cases and twenty-one matched controls. The spine adipose index was significantly greater in patients developing deep SSI (p=.029), and this relationship was maintained after adjusting for confounders (p=.046). Risk of developing deep SSI following PILF surgery was increased 2.0-fold when the spine adipose index was ≥0.51. The spine adipose index had excellent (ICC >0.9; p<.001) inter- and intra-observer reliabilities.Conclusion: The spine adipose index is a novel radiographic measure and an independent risk factor for developing deep SSI, with 0.51 being the ideal threshold value for pre-operative risk stratification in patients undergoing PILF surgery. Purpose: The etiology of adenomyosis is not well understood, but adenomyosis is a common disease. In our study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between adenomyosis and subcutaneous fat tissue thickness by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and Methods: Eighty patients were included in the study and classified into two groups according to their MRI diagnosis. The first group includes patients diagnosed adenomyosis with MRI and the control group consisted of patients who had undergone pelvic MRI for any reason not diagnosed with adenomyosis. The thickness of the subcutaneous fatty tissue was measured at the localization of the first sacral vertebral corpus in both patient groups. In addition, the number of births, cesarean section, and additional pelvic pathologies were compared. Results: Subcutaneous fatty tissue thickness was significantly increased in patients with adenomyosis compared with the control group (P < 0.0005). There was a significant difference in the number of three and more pregnancies in the adenomyosis group (n=23) compared to the control group (n=7). No significant difference was found between the two groups of patients in the history of cesarean section. Conclusions: Adenomyosis is a disease of unknown etiology. Obesity and consequently an increase in thickness in the subcutaneous fatty tissue is one of the important risk factors for the development of adenomyosis.

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 6-month treatment regimen with exenatide on the lipid profile, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), carotid intima media thickness (CIMT), visceral adiposity, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), all of which are important cardiovascular risk factors. Materials and methods: This study included 45 obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Baseline clinical findings, laboratory parameters, and ultrasonography findings were recorded. An exenatide recipe was given twice daily to the patients and, after 6 months of therapy, the same variables were compared. The compared parameters were lipid profiles, hsCRP, aspartat aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, liver craniocaudal diameter, visceral fat volume, subcutaneous fat thickness, and CIMT. Liver diameter, visceral fat volume, subcutaneous fat thickness, and CIMT were measured by ultrasonography. Results: After therapy, statistically significant improvements were achieved in lipid profile, hsCRP, liver enzymes, body mass index, and waist and hip circumferences. Also, statistically significant decreases were obtained in liver craniocaudal diameter, subcutaneous fat thickness, visceral fat volume, and CIMT. The reduction of CIMT and liver diameter were not correlated with BMI and HbA1c reduction. Conclusion: This study showed improvement in lipid profile and hsCRP levels with exenatide treatment. We also showed decrease in both visceral fat volume and subcutaneous fat thickness. We demonstrated significant decrease in liver enzymes with significant decrease in liver diameter. These findings support the use of exenatide in patients with NAFLD and T2DM. Additionally, this study showed that exenatide treatment given twice daily reduces CIMT in obese T2DM patients. The objective of this study was to assess the capability of predicting carcass traits and meat cuts weights, in fattening lambs of indigenous Greek dairy sheep breeds, using ultrasound measurements and live body weight measurements pre-slaughter. A total of 187 lambs of Chios and Serres breeds were involved in the study. Body condition score, live body weight (LBW), and ultrasound measurements of Longissimus lumborum muscle depth (LMD) and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) at the lumbar region were recorded pre-slaughter. After slaughter, the carcasses were classified using five-degree grading systems for muscle development and fat deposition, while hot (HCW) and cold carcass (CCW) and meat cuts weights were measured. The statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and linear regression models to estimate the fixed effects of sex and the covariances of LBW, BCS, and ultrasound measurements on the studied traits. High R2 values (0.60 ≤ R2 ≤ 0.92) were observed in the models predicting HCW, CCW, forequarter, leg chump on shank off, the short loin, the eye of the short loin, and foreshank weights. Among the models estimated LMD, SFT, and LBW as significant predictors, the ones predicting hot and cold carcass weights, the short loin, the eye of the short loin, and the eye of the rack weights were successfully validated. Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of young Nellore bulls and of young dual-purpose dairy bulls fed proportions of 'Mulato II' grass silage (400 and 100 g kg-1), in diets with high levels of concentrate, as well as to evaluate the cost of this feed. Sixteen young Nellore bulls and 16 young dairy crossbred bulls were used, with initial average weight of 380.69±10.45 and 376.94±17.16 kg, respectively, and average initial age of 24 months. A completely randomized experimental design was carried out in a 2x2 factorial arrangement. The highest silage proportion caused a 13% increase in dry matter intake (percentage of body weight) and a 19.7% decrease in dry matter digestibility of the diet, but it did not alter the intake of total digestible nutrients, nor the average daily gain or carcass characteristics. Nutrient intake and digestibility, average daily gain, and carcass characteristics (except conformation) did not change due to the genetic group of animals. Feed conversion was 18.3% better in young dairy bulls. In diets with high levels of concentrate, the proportion of 400 g kg-1 of 'Mulato II' grass silage, in comparison with that of 100 g kg-1, does not affect the productive performance, nor the main carcass characteristics of economic interest of confined young bulls, but reduces feeding costs.

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) hampers the advantages of surgical management, which requires early forecast particularly in patients receiving colorectal surgery. This study is to explore potential relationship between individual abdominal anatomic characteristics including subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), rectus abdominis thickness (RAT), and abdomen depth (AD), with the incidence of SSI in elective radical resection of colon malignancy.Materials and Methods: This retrospective case-control study has recruited 55 patients in each SSI and non-SSI group with propensity score match method. Demographics, clinical attributes, and pre- and intra-operative information were compared between groups with univariate analysis to elicit significant parameters, which were subsequently brought into logistic regression and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis.Results: Patients with SSI showed lower preoperative albumin (p = 0.0022), higher RAT (p = 0.014), AD (p = 0.029), and the multiplied value (RAT × AD) (p = 0.0026) contrasted with patients without SSI. Logistic regression demonstrated RAT × AD as an independent risk factor for SSI (OR = 1.007, p < 0.001) and a biomarker for SSI prediction (AUC = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.74 ~ 0.91).Conclusions: Preoperative RAT and abdomen depth are associated with the risk of postoperative SSI in patients receiving elective radical resection of colon cancer.Trial Registration:www.researchregistry.com, identifier researchregistry3669

The thickness of the subcutaneous fat (SFT) is a very important parameter in the ham, since determines the process the ham will be submitted. This study compares two methods to predict the SFT in slaughter line: an automatic system using an SVM model (Support Vector Machine) and a manual measurement of the fat carried out by an experienced operator, in terms of accuracy and economic benefit. These two methods were compared to the golden standard obtained by measuring SFT with a ruler in a sample of 400 hams equally distributed within each SFT class. The results show that the SFT prediction made by the SVM model achieves an accuracy of 75.3%, which represents an improvement of 5.5% compared to the manual measurement. Regarding economic benefits, SVM model can increase them between 12 and 17%. It can be concluded that the classification using SVM is more accurate than the one performed manually with an increase of the economic benefit for sorting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: It is to determine the body composition, hand motor grip strength and somatotype measurements in healthy child between 3 and 6 years old. Methods: Seventy three (73) healthy child (34 boys, 39 girls) are participated in our study. Anthropometric measurements are performed to determine body composition in children included in the study. From these measurements, the circumference measurements of head and neck, arm and thigh and diameter measurements of elbow and knee, the grip of hand strength and subcutaneous fat thickness are calculated. The somatotype values are determined according to Health Carter Analysis method. Results: Age, weight, height and body mass index-BMI (SD) are 4.41 (0.91) years, 18.90 (3.70) kg, 106.90 (7.04) cm ve 16.45 (2.07) kg/m2 in girls, respectively whereas the corresponding values are found as 4.50 (0.90) years, 18.82 (3.52) kg, 108.40 (7.14) cm ve 15.89 (1.44) kg/m2 in boys, respectively. Significant difference are no found between two genders about demographic data (p>0.05). Significant difference are no found between girls and boys in all measurements (exclude arm circumference and hand grip strength measurements) both right and left side (p>0.05). Also, the significant difference are found in somatotype such as endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph between girls and boys (p<0.05). Conclusion: The differences that may occur between genders in development have been observed for puberty period. Background: Body mass index does not indicate the distribution of adipose tissue. Central adiposity may be measured using ultrasound measurement of subcutaneous fat thickness. This study determined if the abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness measured correlated with skin-to-epidural space distance at delivery, and compared this with the booking body mass index.Methods: We analysed a sub-set of participants from a single-centre, prospective cohort study that assessed the relationship between subcutaneous fat thickness and maternity outcomes. Abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness measurements were obtained during the routine fetal anomaly scan. The skin-to-epidural space distance was obtained in those having epidural or combined spinal-epidural analgesia. Linear regression was used to test for strength of association and adjusted R2 values calculated to determine if subcutaneous fat thickness or body mass index was more strongly associated with skin-to-epidural space distance.Results: The 463 women had a median (IQR) booking body mass index of 25.0 kg/m2 (21.8-29.3) and subcutaneous fat thickness of 16.2 mm (13.0-21.0). The median (IQR) skin-to-epidural space distance was 5.0 cm (4.5-6.0). Both parameters significantly correlated with skin-to-epidural space distance (r=0.53 and 0.68 respectively, P <0.001). Adjusted linear regression coefficient (95% CI) for subcutaneous fat thickness was 0.09 (0.08 to 0.11), R2=0.30 and for body mass index 0.12 (0.11 to 0.13), R2=0.47.Conclusions: Booking body mass index had a stronger relationship with skin-to- epidural space distance at delivery than subcutaneous fat thickness, explaining 47% of the variation in the skin-to-epidural distance. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare cutaneous heat pain thresholds using the method of limit and level.Methods: Sixteen young males (23.2 ± 3.2 year, 174.9 ± 4.9 cm, and 70.1 ± 8.6 kg) participated in this study. The thermode temperature increased at a constant rate of 0.1 °C s-1 from 33 °C for the method of limit, whereas the method of level consisted of 3 s heat pulses increasing from 44 °C to 50 °C in 100 s separated by 5 s intervals. All measurements were conducted on 14 body regions (the forehead, neck, chest, abdomen, upper back, upper arm, forearm, waist, hand, palm, thigh, calf, foot, and sole) in 28 °C, 35% relative humidity.Results: The results are as follows. Heat pain thresholds were on average 3.2 ± 2.1 °C higher for the method of level than for the method of limit (P < 0.05). Second, the correlation coefficient between values by two methods was 0.819 (P < 0.01). Third, lower body regions (thigh, calf, and sole) had higher heat pain thresholds than upper body regions (chest) by the method of level only (P < 0.05). Fourth, body regional subcutaneous fat thickness showed no relationship with heat pain thresholds except the upper arm.Conclusion: These results indicated that cutaneous heat pain thresholds vary based on the type of heat stimuli and body regions. The method of limit could be applied for predicting accumulated thermal pain starting from moderate heat, whereas the method of level may be applicable for predicting acute heat pain to flames or high heat. Introduction: Early pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is known to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes but does not account for body fat distribution. This study aimed to determine prospectively whether maternal abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness (SCFT) measured by ultrasound at the fetal morphology scan is a better predictor than BMI of mode of delivery and other pregnancy outcomes.Material and Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of women delivering singleton neonates at a tertiary public hospital. Women were included if they had appropriate images at the routine fetal anomaly ultrasound scan and delivered in the facility. The primary outcome was mode of delivery categorized as cesarean section or vaginal delivery. The relation between maternal SCFT and BMI was described using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The association of maternal abdominal SCFT BMI at booking-in was compared with pregnancy outcomes using univariate linear and logistic regression.Results: SCFT and BMI were obtained for 997 women. The median (interquartile range) SCFT was 15.3 mm (12.8-19.6) and median (interquartile range) BMI 24.3 kg/m2 (21.7-28.3). Maternal abdominal SCFT and BMI were highly correlated (R2  = 0.55). Both were significantly associated with cesarean delivery: SCFT per 5 mm (odds ratio [OR] 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18-1.48; BMI per 5 kg/m2 OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.15-1.44.Conclusions: Maternal abdominal SCFT and BMI were both significantly associated with cesarean delivery and other outcomes. The effect of different percentages of Duroc genes in crossbreeding (5, 50 and 100%), the gender (immunocastrated males – ICM and females) and their interaction was evaluated on growth, carcass and meat quality traits for pigs. Crossbreds (50% Duroc) had greater average daily feed intake, hot carcass weight and backfat thickness but lower meat yield when compared to 5% Duroc crossbreds and purebred (100% Duroc) animals (P < 0.05). Purebred (100% Duroc) animals had the lowest backfat thickness and subcutaneous fat thickness, and the greatest muscle depth and meat yield (P < 0.05). ICM animals had better feed conversion, greater average daily gain, hot carcass weight and amount of meat, and lower hot carcass yield, cold carcass weight, Longissimus thoracis depth, rib with belly and ham weights compared to females (P < 0.05). Marbling scores were greater in purebred (100%) animals (P < 0.05). The meat from 50% Duroc crossbreds and 100% Duroc purebred pigs was more reddish pink in color than 5% Duroc crossbreds (P < 0.05). The effect of the substitution of Tifton hay (0, 33, 66, 100 g/100 g) for pineapple (Ananas comosus L.) stubble hay was evaluated in the characteristics of the carcasses of goats of an unknown breed (UB) in feedlot. Thirty-two bucks with an average initial live weight of 17.5±1.3 kg, at approximately 150 days of age, were housed in individual stalls provided with feeding and drinking troughs. The animals were distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and eight replications. There was a quadratic effect on the weights of hot carcass and cold carcass, empty body, and loin eye area. A linear increase was observed for losses by carcass cooling. The weights of commercial cuts and the weights of total muscle, total bone, intramuscular fat, and total fat decreased linearly. All morphometric measurements were influenced by the inclusion of pineapple stubble hay in the .diets. Substitution of Tifton hay for pineapple stubble hay at the level of 33 g/100 g improves the carcasses of UB goats qualitatively and quantitatively

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common complications after gastric cancer (GC) surgery. The occurrence of SSI can lead to a prolonged postoperative hospital stay and increased medical expenses, and it can also affect postoperative rehabilitation and the quality of life of patients. Subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and abdominal depth (AD) can be used as predictors of SSI in patients undergoing radical resection of GC., Aim: To explore the potential relationship between SFT or AD and SSI in patients undergoing elective radical resection of GC., Methods: Demographic, clinical, and pre- and intraoperative information of 355 patients who had undergone elective radical resection of GC were retrospectively collected from hospital electronic medical records. Univariate analysis was performed to screen out the significant parameters, which were subsequently analyzed using binary logistic regression and receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis., Results: The prevalence of SSI was 11.27% (40/355). Multivariate analyses revealed that SFT [odds ratio (OR) = 1.150; 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.090-1.214; P < 0.001], AD (OR = 1.024; 95%CI: 1.009-1.040; P = 0.002), laparoscopic-assisted surgery (OR = 0.286; 95%CI: 0.030-0.797; P = 0.017), and operation time (OR = 1.008; 95%CI: 1.001-1.015; P = 0.030) were independently associated with the incidence of SSI after elective radical resection of GC. The thickness of the subcutaneous fat in hams is one of the most important factors for the dry-curing process and largely determines its final quality. This parameter is usually measured in slaughterhouses by a manual metrical measure to classify hams. The aim of the present study was to propose an automatic classification method based on data obtained from a carcass automatic classification equipment (AutoFom) and intrinsic data of the pigs (sex, breed, and weight) to simulate the manual classification system. The evaluated classification algorithms were decision tree, support vector machines (SVM), k-nearest neighbour and discriminant analysis. A total of 4000 hams selected by breed and sex were classified as thin (0–10 mm), standard (11–15 mm), semi-fat (16–20 mm) and fat (>20 mm). The most reliable model, with a percentage of success of 73%, was SVM with Gaussian kernel, including all data available. These results suggest that the proposed classification method can be a useful online tool in slaughterhouses to classify hams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To analyze the setup error during tumor radiotherapy by linear accelerator cone beam CT (CBCT), and to determine the presence of correlation between subcutaneous fat thickness and setup error. Methods From May 2016 to June 2017 59 patients with pelvic tumors underwent CT scan after body positioning with thermoplastic model, CBCT images were obtained before treatment and registered automatically and manually along with localizable CT images. The displacement data at X(left-right), Y(head-foot) and Z(front-back) directions as well as pelvic subcutaneous fat thickness were recorded, and SPSS 18.0 was used for data statistics. Results The 59 patients had the mean setup errors at X, Y and Z directions being(1.07±2.18),(-0.07±5.00)and(1.15±2.38)mm respectively,and the subcutaneous fat thickness ranging from 0.3 to 2.9 cm with a mean value of 1.6 cm. Spearman analysis showed the correlations between the absolute value of the errors and the subcutaneous fat thickness being 0.15, 0.11 and 0.20 respectively at X, Y and Z directions, and there were no significant differences between the correlations (P>0.05). Conclusion The setup method verifies its feasibility by restraining its errors at X, Y and Z directions between -5 and +5 mm, and there is a weak correlation between the setup error and subcutaneous fat thickness. Some measurements carried out by ultrasound in the Longissimus dorsi between the 12th and 13th ribs were monitored, aiming to know the changes in the muscular and adipose tissues in that muscle and the connections of these measurements with body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) of ewes in different stages (physiological stages and experimental periods). Ewes were arranged into the following treatments: EL = ewes which remained in lactation for 60 days with their respective lambs and slaughtered one day after weaning; EWL = ewes which remained in lactation for 60 days with their respective lambs and one more period of approximately 30 days without the lambs and slaughtered afterwards; and ENC = ewes which did not give birth during the year. Ultrasound measurements were carried out in the beginning, middle and end of the experiment (every 21 days), as well as BW and BCS of ewes. There was not interaction between periods and experimental treatments for BW and BCS of ewes. It was concluded that the use of ultrasound allows monitoring changes that occur with the subcutaneous fat and Longissimus dorsi of ewes. Those changes occur more frequently in intervals of 42 days (muscular and adipose tissues).

Introduction Lateral pain around the greater trochanter (LTP) is a common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA) that can significantly reduce quality of life. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between lateral trochanteric bursa repair, subcutaneous fat thickness, and trochanteric pain during the THA procedure. Materials and methods A total of 98 patients who underwent THA for hip arthrosis between 2021 and 2022 were evaluated retrospectively. For all evaluated patients, subcutaneous thickness was measured between the fascia and the skin at the incision site. Bursa repair was performed in 47 patients, while bursa excision was done in 51 patients. The data obtained included demographic information, functional scores, comorbidities, bursa repair and skin thickness values, radiographic evaluations, and other specific markers. These were compared between patients diagnosed with LTP following THA and the controls. Results No difference was observed between the study groups in terms of subcutaneous fat thickness, bursa repair, and other demographic or radiographic evaluations. As expected, there were statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of the visual analog scale (VAS) score (p=0.030) and the Harris hip score (HHS) (p=0.045). When comparing the groups with and without LTP, the VAS score was higher in the group with LTP, while the HHS was found to be lower. Conclusion Trochanteric pain is not associated with bursa repair or subcutaneous thickness.
