Having highly tunable molecular topology is one of the most important characteristics of polymers that provides these materials with a wide range of interesting and unique properties. In particular, ring polymers exhibit a number of properties that are markedly distinct from their linear counterparts. Here, we compare and contrast the glass formation of unknotted, nonconcatenated ring and linear polymer melts having variable molecular mass based on molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained model. After revealing an unusual property in the structure of small rings, we discuss the mass dependence of the structural relaxation time determined from the self-intermediate scattering function over a wide range of temperatures in both ring and linear polymers. As a general trend, we find that the characteristic temperatures (e.g., the glass transition temperature) and fragility of glass formation increase with increasing molecular mass in linear polymers, but the mass dependences of these properties are rather weak in the family of ring polymer models considered, in broad accord with experimental measurements. Importantly, we show that the glass formation of ring polymers can quantitatively be described by the string model, a model that is broadly consistent with the entropy theory of glass formation and that takes the mass of string-like clusters as a molecular realization of the abstract cooperatively rearranging regions. This opens the possibility of applying the configurational entropy-based theories to describe the glass formation of ring polymers, once the ring topology is taken into account. Elastomeric rollers are important components in applications such as printing and roll-to-roll manufacturing. To gain insight into roller mechanics and provide a basis for further investigations into dynamic rolling problems where rolling instabilities may arise, we employ a specially-designed apparatus to obtain displacement and strain fields via digital image correlation (DIC) under applied loads. We test loading scenarios leading to impending slip of an elastomeric roller, mounted on a steel hub, and in contact with a glass (rigid) substrate. We first examine strain fields under normal loading and compare them with the closest analytical predictions. We then progress to analyzing the strain fields under combined normal and tangential loading. For each loading scenario, we discuss the displacement and strain fields of the roller sidewall and contact interface. We use a conceptual string model to explore how stick and slip zones develop within the contact area as well as how memory effects arise during cyclic loading. This memory effect is then verified experimentally using the DIC strain fields. Additionally, we demonstrate a means for identifying the stick zone area between the roller and substrate using the experimentally-obtained displacement fields. We believe the apparatus, and the ability to obtain experimental displacement and strain fields, will prove valuable in understanding roller mechanics and associated instabilities. • Digital image correlation for contact and sidewall analysis of an elastomeric roller. • Elastomeric roller deformation including the effects of friction in the contact area. • A conceptual model for visualizing memory effects and stick and slip development. • Measuring the decrease in stick zone area under increasing tangential load using DIC. • Memory effects are calculated during a loading cycle and result in residual strain. In this paper, we have discussed string cosmological model within the framework of f (R , T) theory of gravity in homogeneous but anisotropic Bianchi Type-II space-time. We have considered cosmic string as a source of energy–momentum tensor. We get the solution of the corresponding field equations by assuming deceleration parameter q (t) = − 1 + β 2 β t + k , which is time-dependent (here, k and β are arbitrary constants). This particular form of scale factor enables us to explain the two scenarios, (i) By using recent constraints ( H 0 = 7 3. 8 , q 0 = − 0. 7 3) from supernovae type Ia union data (Cunha, Kinematic constraints to the transition redshift from supernovae type Ia union data, Phys. Rev. D79 (2009) 047301), we find the values of arbitrary constants β and k for which we have derived a cosmological model showing accelerating expansion universe (q < 0) only throughout the evolution and (ii) By using the recent constraints ( H 0 = 7 3. 8 , and q 0 = − 0. 5 4) from SNIa data in combination with BAO and CMB observations (Giostri et al. From cosmic deceleration to acceleration: new constraints from SN Ia and BAO/CMB, J. Cosmol. Astrophys.3 (2012) 27), we find the values of arbitrary constants for which we have derived a cosmological model with phase transition from early decelerating (q > 0) to the present accelerating (q < 0) universe. Also, for the model, we have evaluated and discussed the various physical and kinematic parameters. We have also shown the variation of these cosmological parameters graphically for specific values of the constants. The stability and physical viability are also discussed for the derived models using some recently developed diagnostic tools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we are interested to investigate spatially homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi type-V cosmological model in the presence of cosmic string source coupled with an attractive massive scalar meson field. We have obtained a deterministic cosmological model using some relevant physical and mathematical conditions. Also we have determined cosmological parameters like average Hubble parameter, shear scalar, scalar expansion, string tension density and the energy density of the string. We have also obtained the massive scalar field in the model. A detailed discussion of the above physical quantities is, also, presented [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We count the number of bound states of BPS black holes on local Calabi-Yau three-folds involving a Riemann surface of genus g. We show that the corresponding gauge theory on the brane reduces to a q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on the Riemann surface. Following the recent connection between the black hole entropy and the topological string partition function, we find that for a large black hole charge N, up to corrections of O(e^-N), Z_BH is given as a sum of a square of chiral blocks, each of which corresponds to a specific D-brane amplitude. The leading chiral block, the vacuum block, corresponds to the closed topological string amplitudes. The sub-leading chiral blocks involve topological string amplitudes with D-brane insertions at 2g-2 points on the Riemann surface analogous to the Omega points in the large N 2d Yang-Mills theory. The finite N amplitude provides a non-perturbative definition of topological strings in these backgrounds. This also leads to a novel non-perturbative formulation of c=1 non-critical string at the self-dual radius.

We investigate the geometry of four dimensional black hole solutions in the presence of stringy higher curvature corrections to the low energy effective action. For certain supersymmetric two charge black holes these corrections drastically alter the causal structure of the solution, converting seemingly pathological null singularities into timelike singularities hidden behind a finite area horizon. We establish, analytically and numerically, that the string-corrected two-charge black hole metric has the same Penrose diagram as the extremal four-charge black hole. The higher derivative terms lead to another dramatic effect -- the gravitational force exerted by a black hole on an inertial observer is no longer purely attractive! The magnitude of this effect is related to the size of the compactification manifold.

After reviewing the cosmological constant problem -- why is Lambda not huge? -- I outline the two basic approaches that had emerged by the late 1980s, and note that each made a clear prediction. Precision cosmological experiments now indicate that the cosmological constant is nonzero. This result strongly favors the environmental approach, in which vacuum energy can vary discretely among widely separated regions in the universe. The need to explain this variation from first principles constitutes an observational constraint on fundamental theory. I review arguments that string theory satisfies this constraint, as it contains a dense discretuum of metastable vacua. The enormous landscape of vacua calls for novel, statistical methods of deriving predictions, and it prompts us to reexamine our description of spacetime on the largest scales. I discuss the effects of cosmological dynamics, and I speculate that weighting vacua by their entropy production may allow for prior-free predictions that do not resort to explicitly anthropic arguments.

We devise minimalistic gauged U(1)_X Froggatt-Nielsen models which at low-energy give rise to the recently suggested discrete gauge Z_6 symmetry, proton hexality, thus stabilizing the proton. Assuming three generations of right-handed neutrinos, with the proper choice of X-charges, we obtain viable neutrino masses. Furthermore, we find scenarios such that no X-charged hidden sector superfields are needed, which from a bottom-up perspective allows the calculation of g_string, g_X and G_SM's Kac-Moody levels. The only mass scale apart from M_grav is m_soft.

We construct a gauge-mediation model with a D-term supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking. R-symmetry breaking necessary for generating the SUSY standard-model gaugino masses is given by gaugino condensation of a strongly coupled gauge theory in the hidden sector. The energy scale of the strong dynamics of the hidden sector gauge theory should be around the messenger mass scale M, or otherwise perturbative calculations would be reliable and would lead to negative soft mass squared for squarks and sleptons. Thus, all the mass scales are controlled by a virtually single parameter, \sqrt{D}/M. This model covers a very wide range of gravitino mass, m_{3/2} \simeq 1 eV--100 TeV. Possible embeddings of the model in string theory are also discussed.

The energy density of the vacuum, Lambda, is at least 60 orders of magnitude smaller than several known contributions to it. Approaches to this problem are tightly constrained by data ranging from elementary observations to precision experiments. Absent overwhelming evidence to the contrary, dark energy can only be interpreted as vacuum energy, so the venerable assumption that Lambda=0 conflicts with observation. The possibility remains that Lambda is fundamentally variable, though constant over large spacetime regions. This can explain the observed value, but only in a theory satisfying a number of restrictive kinematic and dynamical conditions. String theory offers a concrete realization through its landscape of metastable vacua.

We search for a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) generated by a network of cosmic strings using six millisecond pulsars from Data Release 2 (DR2) of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA). We perform a Bayesian analysis considering two models for the network of cosmic string loops, and compare it to a simple power-law model which is expected from the population of supermassive black hole binaries. Our main strong assumption is that the previously reported common red noise process is a SGWB. We find that the one-parameter cosmic string model is slightly favored over a power-law model thanks to its simplicity. If we assume a two-component stochastic signal in the data (supermassive black hole binary population and the signal from cosmic strings), we get a $95\%$ upper limit on the string tension of $\log_{10}(Gμ) < -9.9$ ($-10.5$) for the two cosmic string models we consider. In extended two-parameter string models, we were unable to constrain the number of kinks. We test two approximate and fast Bayesian data analysis methods against the most rigorous analysis and find consistent results. These two fast and efficient methods are applicable to all SGWBs, independent of their source, and will be crucial for analysis of extended data sets., 13 pages, 5 figures

Given the β functions of the closed string sigma model up to one loop in α ′ , the effective action implements the condition β = 0 to preserve conformal symmetry at quantum level. One of the more powerful and striking results of string theory is that this effective action contains Einstein gravity as an emergent dynamics in space–time. We show from the β functions and its relation with the equations of motion of the effective action that the differential identities are the Noether identities associated with the effective action and its gauge symmetries. From here, we reconstruct the gauge and space–time symmetries of the effective action. In turn, we can show that the differential identities are the contracted Bianchi identities of the field strength H and Riemann tensor R. Next, we apply the same ideas to DFT. Taking as starting point that the generalized β functions in DFT are proportional to the equations of motion, we construct the generalized differential identities in DFT. Relating the Noether identities with the contracted Bianchi identities of DFT, we were able to reconstruct the generalized gauge and space–time symmetries. Finally, we recover the original β functions, effective action, differential identities, and symmetries when we turn off the x ̃ space–time coordinates from DFT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use the exact degeneracy formula of single-centred $\frac14$ BPS dyonic black holes with unit torsion in 4D $N=4$ toroidally compactified heterotic string theory to improve on the existing formulation of the corresponding quantum entropy function obtained using supersymmetric localization. The result takes the form of a sum over Euclidean backgrounds including orbifolds of the Euclidean $AdS_2 \times S^2$ attractor geometry. Using an $N=2$ formalism, we determine the explicit form of the Abelian gauge potentials supporting these backgrounds. We further show how a rewriting of the degeneracy formula is amenable, at a semi-classical level, to a gravitational interpretation involving 2D Euclidean wormholes. This alternative picture is useful to elucidate different aspects of the gravitational path integral capturing the microstate degeneracies. We also comment on the relation between the associated 1D holographic models., Comment: 32 pages, 1 figure; v2: clarifications and references added, minor typos corrected

We study the effects of an anomalous Z' boson on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g-2), and especially the impact of its axial coupling. We mainly evaluate the negative contribution to (g-2) of such couplings at one-loop and look at the anomalous couplings generated at two loops. We find areas of the parameter space, where the anomalous contribution becomes comparable and even dominant compared to the one-loop contribution. We show that in such cases, the cutoff of the theory is sufficiently low, so that new charged fermions can be found in the next round of collider experiments. We comment on the realization of such a context in string theory orientifolds., Comment: 45 pages, 8 plots, jheppub style, tikz package used, v2 - various comments/clarifications and citations added

Journal of high energy physics 01(1), 114 (2023). doi:10.1007/JHEP01(2023)114, The swampland conjecture known as Festina Lente (FL) imposes a lower bound on the mass of all charged particles in a quasi-de Sitter space. In this paper, we propose the aFL (axionic Festina Lente) bound, an extension of FL to axion-like particles arising from type II string theory. We find that the product of the instanton action and the axion decay constant is bounded from below by the vacuum energy. This is achieved indirectly, using dimensional reduction on Calabi-Yau threefolds, and translating the FL result for dipoles into a purely geometric bound. We discuss axionic black holes evolution, and aFL constraints on Euclidean wormholes, showing that the gravitational arguments leading to the FL bound for U(1) charged particles cannot be directly applied to axions. Moreover, we discuss phenomenological implications of the aFL bound, including constraints on string inflation models and the axion-photon coupling via kinetic mixing., Published by SISSA, [Trieste]

We argue that the fundamental "atomic objects" in string theory are themelia: extended objects that have 16 supersymmetries locally. We show that all existing smooth horizonless microstate geometries can be seen as bound states of themelia, and we conjecture that all such bound states with suitable KKM charges will give rise to microstate geometries. We also construct the most general themelion with a three-torus isometry and show that it interpolates between superstrata and the super-maze., 6 pages

The transcendental expectation of string theory is that the nature of the fundamental forces, particle spectra and masses, together with coupling constants, is uniquely determined by mathematical and logical consistency, non-empirically, that is by pure reason. However pluralism triumphed with the explosive emergence of the multiverse. String theorists have extended a long-sought dream (their unique and final theory) to a landscape or a happy caparnaum. Proponents of string theory try to qualify their arguments via swampland conjectures while cosmologists retreat to their telescopes. We review the current status of the string theory swampland.

International audience; 5d Superconformal Field Theories (SCFTs) are intrinsically strongly-coupled UV fixed points, whose realization hinges on string theoretic methods: they can be constructed by compactifying M-theory on local Calabi-Yau threefold singularities or alternatively from the world-volume of 5-brane-webs in type IIB string theory. There is a correspondence between 5-brane-webs and toric Calabi-Yau threefolds, however this breaks down when multiple 5-branes are allowed to end on a single 7-brane. In this paper, we extend this connection and provide a geometric realization of brane configurations including 7-branes. A web with 7-branes defines a so-called generalized toric polygon (GTP), which corresponds to combinatorial data that is obtained by removing vertices along external edges of a toric polygon. We identify the geometries associated to GTPs as non-toric deformations of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds and provide a precise, algebraic description of the geometry, when 7-branes are introduced along a single edge. The key ingredients in our analysis are T-branes in a type IIA frame, which includes D6-branes. We show that performing Hanany-Witten moves for the 7-branes on the type IIB side corresponds to switching on semisimple vacuum expectation values on the worldvolume of D6-branes, which in turn uplifts to complex structure deformations of the Calabi-Yau geometries. We test the proposal by computing the crepant resolutions of the deformed geometries, thereby checking consistency with the expected properties of the SCFTs.

We propose an organizing principle for string theory moduli spaces in six dimensions with $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$, based on a rank reduction map, into which all known constructions fit. In the case of cyclic orbifolds, which are the main focus of the paper, we make an explicit connection with meromorphic 2D (s)CFTs with $c = 24$ ($c = 12$) and show how these encode every possible gauge symmetry enhancement in their associated 6D theories. These results generalize naturally to non-cyclic orbifolds, into which the only known string construction (to our awareness) also fits. This framework suggests the existence of a total of 47 moduli spaces: the Narain moduli space, 23 of cyclic orbifold type and 23 of non-cyclic type. Of these only 17 have known string constructions. Among the 30 new moduli spaces, 15 correspond to pure supergravity, for a total of 16 such spaces. A full classification of nonabelian gauge symmetries is given, and as a byproduct we complete the one for seven dimensions, in which only those of theories with heterotic descriptions were known exhaustively., Minor corrections

We analyze the boundaries of the moduli spaces of compactifications of the heterotic string on $T^d$, making particular emphasis on $d=2$ and its F-theory dual. We compute the OPE algebras as we approach all the infinite distance limits that correspond to (possibly partial) decompactification limits in some dual frame. When decompactifying $k$ directions, we find infinite towers of states becoming light that enhance the algebra arising at a given point in the moduli space of the $T^{d-k}$ compactification to its $k$-loop version, where the central extensions are given by the $k$ KK vectors. For $T^2$ compactifications, we reproduce all the affine algebras that arise in the F-theory dual, and show all the towers explicitly, including some that are not manifest in the F-theory counterparts. Furthermore, we construct the affine $SO(32)$ algebra arising in the full decompactification limit, both in the heterotic and in the F-theory sides, showing that not only affine algebras of exceptional type arise in the latter., Comment: 51 pages, 10 figures

We consider the target space theory of bosonic and heterotic string theory to first order in $\alpha'$ compactified to three dimensions, using a formulation that is manifestly T-duality invariant under ${\rm O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ with $d=23$ and $d=7$, respectively. While the two-derivative supergravity exhibits a symmetry enhancement to the U-duality group ${\rm O}(d+1,d+1)$, the continuous group is known to be broken to ${\rm O}(d,d,\mathbb{R})$ by the first $\alpha'$ correction. We revisit this observation by computing the full effective actions in three dimensions to first order in $\alpha'$ by dualizing the vector gauge fields. We give a formally ${\rm O}(d+1,d+1)$ invariant formulation by invoking a vector compensator, and we observe a chiral pattern that allows one to reconstruct the bosonic action from the heterotic action. Furthermore, we obtain a particular massive deformation by integrating out the external $B$ field. This induces a novel Chern-Simons term based on composite connections that, remarkably, is ${\rm O}(d+1,d+1)$ invariant to leading order in the deformation parameter., Comment: 35 pages

In four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N)$, we present a closed-form solution for a family of integrated four-point functions involving stress tensor multiplet composites of arbitrary R-charge. These integrated correlators are shown to be equivalent to a one-dimensional semi-infinite lattice of harmonic oscillators with nearest-neighbor interactions, evolving over the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. The solution, exceptionally simple in an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-invariant eigenbasis, is exact in the R-charge $p$, rank $N$, and complexified gauge coupling $\tau$. This permits a systematic and non-perturbative large charge expansion for any $N$ and $\tau$. Especially novel is a double-scaled "gravity regime" in which $p \sim N^2 \gg 1$, holographically dual to a large charge regime of semiclassical type IIB string theory in AdS$_5\, \times$ S$^5$. Our results in this limit provide a holographic computation of integrated semiclassical string amplitudes at arbitrary string coupling, including an emergent string scale with a large charge dressing factor. We compare to extremal correlators in superconformal QCD, for which we predict new genus expansions at large charge scaling with $N$., Comment: 31 pages + appendices

We explore the holographic duality between string theory in backgrounds that interpolate between asymptotically linear dilaton spacetime in the UV and $AdS_3$ in the IR, and single-trace $T\bar T$ deformed CFT. In particular, we explain how the deformation of states in the boundary theory is reflected in the bulk geometry, and show that the coupling above which the deformed energy of the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ invariant ground state of the IR CFT becomes complex is a maximal coupling., Comment: 17 pages

We show that the three-dimensional asymptotically linear dilaton background that arises in the near-horizon decoupling region of NS5-branes compactified on $T^4$ admits boundary conditions that lead to an infinite set of symmetries. The associated conserved charges, which implement field-dependent coordinate transformations, are found to be identical to the corresponding generators in a symmetric product orbifold of $T\bar T$ - deformed CFTs. Their algebra is a non-linear modification of the $\mathrm{Virasoro \times Virasoro}$ algebra, which precisely coincides with the algebra of the ``unrescaled'' symmetry generators in $T\bar T$-deformed CFTs. This further strengthens a previously proposed link between the single-trace $T\bar T$ deformation and compactified little string theory., 31 + 19 pp

We describe three previously unnoticed components of the moduli space of minimally supersymmetric string theories in $d\geq 7$, describing in some detail their spectrum and duality properties. We find a new component in nine and eight dimensions, and two additional ones in seven dimensions. These theories were originally discovered in a bottom-up classification of possible F/M-theory singularity freezing patterns in the K3 lattice, described in a companion paper. The 9d/8d component can be understood as F/M-theory on a twisted fibration of the Klein bottle over a circle, while the new seven-dimensional components are described as IIB on Bieberbach manifolds with a duality bundle and RR-NSNS backgrounds turned on. All the new components can be obtained from previously known theories by turning on certain discrete theta angles; however, the spectrum of massive objects is very different, and most strikingly, they feature an incomplete lattice of BPS strings, showing that string BPS completeness is not true in general even with sixteen supercharges. In all cases we find non-BPS representatives for each value of the charge, so the Completeness Principle is satisfied. We also analyze analogous theta angles in nonsupersymmetric string theories, and provide a detailed explanation of why the Type I discrete $\theta$ angle proposed in 1304.1551 is unphysical, using this to clarify certain non-perturbative phenomena in $O8$ planes., Comment: 45 pages + references, 4 figures, and 3 new string theories

We describe a construction of the two-loop amplitude of four graviton supermultiplets in AdS5×S5. We start from an ansatz for a preamplitude from which we generate the full amplitude under the action of a specific Casimir operator. The ansatz captures a recent ansatz of Huang and Yuan and we confirm their result through similar constraints. The form of the result suggests that all ambiguities are captured by the preamplitude which determines the result up to tree-level ambiguities only. We identify a class of four-dimensional ‘zigzag’ integrals which are perfectly adapted to describing the leading logarithmic discontinuity to all orders. We also observe that a bonus crossing symmetry of the preamplitude follows from the transformation properties of the Casimir operator. Combined with the zigzag integrals this allows us to construct a crossing symmetric function with the correct leading logarithmic discontinuities in all channels. From the two-loop result we extract an explicit expression for the two-loop correction to the anomalous dimensions of twist-four operators of generic spin which includes dependence on (alternating) nested harmonic sums up to weight three. We also revisit the prescription of the bulk-point limit of AdS amplitudes and show how it recovers the full flat-space amplitude, not just its discontinuity. With this extended notion of the bulk-point limit we reproduce the scale-dependent logarithmic threshold terms of type IIB string theory in flat-space.

Nearly all 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs) have a partial tensor branch description in terms of a generalized quiver gauge theory consisting of a long one-dimensional spine of quiver nodes with links given by conformal matter; a strongly coupled generalization of a bifundamental hypermultiplet. For theories obtained from M5-branes probing an ADE singularity, this was recently leveraged to extract a protected large R-charge subsector of operators, with operator mixing controlled at leading order in an inverse large R-charge expansion by an integrable spin $s$ Heisenberg spin chain, where $s$ is determined by the $\mathfrak{su}(2)_{R}$ R-symmetry representation of the conformal matter operator. In this work, we show that this same structure extends to the full superconformal algebra $\mathfrak{osp}(6,2|1)$. In particular, we determine the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations which govern this super-spin chain, as well as distinguished subsectors which close under operator mixing. Similar considerations extend to 6D little string theories (LSTs) and 4D $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFTs with the same generalized quiver structures., 35 pages + appendices, 7 figures. v2: minor clarifications; published version

We consider strong 't Hooft coupling expansion in special four-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal models that are planar-equivalent to $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Various observables in these models that admit localization matrix model representation can be expressed at large $N$ in terms of a Fredholm determinant of a Bessel operator. The latter previously appeared in the study of level spacing distributions in matrix models and, more recently, in four-point correlation functions of infinitely heavy half-BPS operators in planar $\mathcal N=4$ SYM. We use this relation and a suitably generalized Szego-Akhiezer-Kac formula to derive the strong 't Hooft coupling expansion of the leading corrections to free energy, half-BPS circular Wilson loop, and certain correlators of chiral primaries operators in the $\mathcal N=2$ models. This substantially generalizes partial results in the literature and represents a challenge for dual string theory calculations in AdS/CFT context. We also demonstrate that the resulting strong-coupling expansions suffer from Borel singularities and require adding non-perturbative, exponentially suppressed corrections. As a byproduct of our analysis, we determine the non-perturbative correction to the above mentioned four-point correlator in planar $\mathcal N=4$ SYM., 65 pages. v2: misprints and eq.(4.20) corrected, note added; v3: minor clarifications
