In the shift toward sustainable energy production, offshore wind power has experienced notable expansion. Several projects to install floating offshore wind farms in European waters, ranging from a few to hundreds of turbines, are currently in the planning stage. The underwater operational sound generated by these floating turbines has the potential to affect marine ecosystems, although the extent of this impact remains underexplored. This study models the sound radiated by three planned floating wind farms in the Strait of Sicily (Italy), an area of significant interest for such developments. These wind farms vary in size (from 250 MW to 2800 MW) and environmental characteristics, including bathymetry and seabed substrates. Propagation losses were modeled in one-third-octave bands using JASCO Applied Sciences' Marine Operations Noise Model, which is based on the parabolic equation method, combined with the BELLHOP beam-tracing model. Two sound speed profiles, corresponding to winter and summer, were applied to simulate seasonal variations in sound propagation. Additionally, sound from an offshore supply ship was incorporated with one of these wind farms to simulate maintenance operations. Results indicate that sound from operating wind farms could reach a broadband sound pressure level (Lp) of 100 dB re 1 µPa as far as 67 km from the wind farm. Nevertheless, this sound level is generally lower than the ambient sound in areas with intense shipping traffic. The findings are discussed in relation to local background sound levels and current guidelines and regulations. The implications for environmental management include the need for comprehensive monitoring and mitigation strategies to protect marine ecosystems from potential acoustic disturbances. The mantis shrimp Rissoides pallidus (Giesbrecht, 1910) is a rarely reported crustacean species in the central Mediterranean Sea. In December 2020, during a trawl survey off Mazara del Vallo harbor (Strait of Sicily), two specimens of R. pallidus were captured on coastal detritus and coastal terrigenous mud bottoms at about 132 and 152 m depths. Simple Summary: Fisheries are amongst the most important anthropogenic activities that strongly impact the marine environment. Therefore, stock assessments are routinely carried out to evaluate the status of the main commercial species to avoid overexploitation. However, these assessments do not take into account the possible mortality of fish due to interaction with fishing gear, and the evaluation of escape survival rates is needed. For the first time in the Central Mediterranean, this study evaluated the escape survival of the red mullet escaping from a bottom trawl. The survival rate of the control individuals (open codend) was higher compared to the treatment individuals (closed codend). Larger fish in the treatment group had a higher probability of dying, while the opposite was observed in the controls. In addition, treatment fish had significantly more wounds per fish than control fish, and were mainly injured around the head. The results highlighted that the sampling methodology was effective in collecting fish samples without affecting their survival rates. Although promising, these results need to be confirmed by further investigation before applying the survival rates in stock assessment models. Disentangling the effects of mixed fisheries and climate change across entire food-webs requires a description of ecosystems using tools that can quantify interactive effects as well as bio-economic aspects. A calibrated dynamic model for the Sicily Channel food web, made up of 72 functional groups and including 13 fleet segments, was developed. A temporal simulation until 2050 was conducted to evaluate the bio-economic interactive effects of the reduction of bottom trawling fishing effort by exploring different scenarios that combine fishery and climate change. Our results indicate that direct and indirect effects produce a net increase in biomass of many functional groups with immediate decline of trawlers’ catches and economic incomes, followed by a long term increase mainly due to biomass rebuilding of commercial species which lasts 5-10 years after fishing reduction. Synergistic and antagonistic effects caused by changes in the fishing effort and in climate characterize a specific functional group’s response in biomass which, in turn, modulate also the catch and income of the other fleets, and especially of those sharing target resources. However, trawler’s intra-fleet competition is higher than the others fleet effects. In the medium term, the effects of fishing effort reduction are higher than those of climate change and seem to make exploitation of marine resources more sustainable over time and fishery processes more efficient by improving ecosystem health.

Species distribution models (SDMs) are important tools for exploring the complex association between species and habitats. Here, we applied six SDMs combining 1946 pieces of presence/absence data regarding European anchovy eggs with environmental parameters from surveys conducted in the Strait of Sicily from 1998 to 2016. We aimed to investigate the mechanisms influencing spawning habitat suitability for anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus). The dataset was split into a training subset (75%) and a test subset (25%) for evaluating the predictive performance of the models. The results suggested the role of environmental parameters in explaining egg occurrence, model accuracy and spatial predictions. Bottom depth consistently had the highest importance, followed by absolute dynamic topography, which gives insights about local mesoscale oceanographic features. Each modelling method, except the linear model, produced successful performance for both the training and the test datasets. The spatial predictions were estimated as weighted averages of single-model predictions, with weights based on discriminatory power measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). This ensemble approach often provided more robust predictions than a single model. The economic performances of four trawling fleets (those of the Sicilian cities of Trapani, Sciacca, Licata and Porto Palo di Capo Passero) operating in the coastal waters along the southern coast of Sicily (geographical Subarea 16), and potentially affected by the establishment of the Fisheries Restricted Areas (FRAs), were analysed. The main economic performance results (revenues, costs and profits) of 37 trawlers were calculated prior to the implementation of FRAs and compared with those estimated by the spatial bio-economic model SMART after the FRAs' establishment. Results showed that the fleets of Sciacca and Licata, located in the central part of the southern Sicilian coast, had a short-term reduction of profits as a result of the implementation of the FRAs; conversely, a short-term increase in the economic performances of Trapani and Porto Palo di Capo Passero fleets was expected. Although the FRAs represent a good tool for rebuilding overexploited stocks, the different socio-economic impacts of the single fleets should be assessed before adopting them and the implementation of specific compensative measures should be planned for the impacted fleet until a more productive state of the stock is reached. On July 2018, one specimen of Ichthyococcus ovatus (Cocco, 1838) was caught in the Strait of Sicily during the International Bottom Trawl Survey in the Mediterranean (MEDITS). The adult I. ovatus measured 49 mm in total length and weighed 1.44 g. In this context, the presently reported study constitutes the first and deepest record of an adult of I. ovatus as well as the morphometric description of its sagittal otoliths. In addition, we provide an age estimation as well as an update of the geographical distribution of this bathypelagic species around the Mediterranean Sea. Based on the growth increments of sagittal otoliths, the estimated age was five years. Specifically, the otolith from the presently reported specimen of I. ovatus tended to be elliptic in shape related to aspect ratio and high rectangularity while circularity showed high complexity of otolith contour complexity. The absence of economic value of rarely reported species may underestimate their abundance. Therefore, more studies and research surveys would be necessary to fill the information gap on the biology of these deep-water species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding drivers of fish maturity is essential to predict the productivity, stability, and resiliency of exploited populations. Size at maturity for European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in the Central Mediterranean Sea has never been published within rigorous peer review process. In the past, stock assessment working groups in the Mediterranean requested such information; however, the size at which 50% of the fish population reaches the sexual maturity (L50) often received weak estimates based on a single or few years of observation, which do not necessarily reflect the whole stock. To address this data gap for the Central Mediterranean Sea, the present research estimated size at maturity of European sardine in the Strait of Sicily. In the study period (2009–2017), sampled individuals exhibited significant differences in size range as well as in body condition and reproductive effort. Data also permitted a clear identification of the spawning season, starting in September–October and ending in March–April the following year. Along the analyzed period, the size at first maturity ranged from 108 to 124 mm (total length) for females and from 102 to 122 mm for males. Significant differences were recorded among genders and years. Moreover, a goodness-of-fit measure was proposed to assess the robustness and reliability of L50 estimates, and thus selecting those that minimize the fitting-associated errors. Finally, results suggested that the low proportion of immature individuals in the samples represents the main source of bias in L50 estimation and possible solution was also proposed.

Mediterranean trawl fisheries are characterized by a critical combination of high fishing effort and low size at first capture for most commercial species. In this study we tested the use of sorting grids installed on bottom trawl nets to minimize the catch of undersized deep-water rose shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris, DPS) and European hake (Merluccius merluccius, HKE). The catch of a traditional trawl net was compared with that obtained with the same net equipped with ad hoc designed juveniles and trash excluder devices (JTEDs) during an experimental survey. Three different JTEDs were tested: the first (G1-SM40) was built with a net of 40-mm square mesh; the second (G2-ST20) and third (G3-ST25) with vertical steel bars spaced 20 and 25 mm, respectively. The probability of retaining DPS and HKE by length class in trawl nets with and without JTED was analysed using generalized additive mixed models. With G1-SM40, the reduction of undersized individuals in the cod-end was about 60% and 44% for DPS and HKE, respectively. With G2-ST20, a 34% catch decrease of HKE individuals smaller than 20 cm total length was observed. A loss of marketable fractions of DPS was recorded with G1-SM40 (–25%) and G2-ST20 (30%). Finally, JTD G3-ST25 was efficient at reducing the catch of undersized specimens of DPS and HKE, but showed a higher loss of marketable fractions than the other JTEDs. Although further fishing trials would be required to maximize the sorting efficiency of the grids, the results obtained clearly indicated that grids can substantially reduce unwanted catches of undersized DPS and HKE in Mediterranean bottom trawl fisheries.

The paper presents sea level and air pressure observations acquired during the 2007 experiment carried out along the southwestern coast of Sicily. The experiment aimed to quantify the atmospheric and oceanic conditions related with the phenomenon of marrobbio, a kind of meteotsunami that is frequently observed in the Strait of Sicily. Sea level data measured at surrounding tide gauges, radio-sounding atmospheric profiles and ERA5 reanalysis data conjoined the analysis. Rapid air pressure and sea level oscillations were measured simultaneously during marrobbio events, while the atmospheric disturbances were estimated to propagate mostly towards east-northeast with a predominant speed of 19–24 m/s. The observed propagation direction and speed were found conducive for generation of long ocean waves through Proudman resonance over a wide outer shelf, although a complex bathymetry in front of affected area may strongly modify the generation. The atmospheric patterns were favourable for wave ducting mechanism during most of the observed marrobbio events. A need for establishing long-term high-frequency observations at marrobbio hot spots, as well to apply high-resolution atmospheric and oceanic models for proper quantification of meteotsunamis, is emphasized. An additional record of the non-indigenous species (NIS) Seriola fasciata from the southern coast of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea) is here described in this note. The catch record is the first in the area and confirms the key role of the area for NIS spreading. In addition, an updated map of its spatial distribution is provided as well as a discussion on the possible misidentification and competition with the native greater amberjack Seriola dumerili. The Strait of Sicily in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea is considered a crossroads between the western and the eastern basins for species immigrating from the Atlantic Ocean and Lessepsian species. Among the latter, the African sailfin flyingfish Parexocoetus mento was recently collected from Lampedusa Island in November 2017, and represents the first documented record in Italian waters. In this paper, the morphological and meristic characteristics of this specimen are reported and discussed, compared with the other species of the genus Parexocoetus. Furthermore, as mapping and monitoring the distribution of invasive species is crucial to understanding their establishment and spread and then to manage the invasion process, the occurrences distribution of P. mento in the Mediterranean Sea was studied. The application of GIS-based spatial statistics allowed to identify significant clustering areas and dispersion areas of the species, summarizing the key characteristics, and underlining directional trends of distribution. GIS analysis identified two similar groups of records (1935/1966 and 1986/2017 time period), showing a change of distribution spatial pattern over time. An earlier spread direction in the Mediterranean east coast and a settled area of P. mento were found. The analysis also includes the specimen caught in Italian waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One hundred and six specimens of the Por’s goatfish, Upeneus pori Ben-Tuvia & Golani (1989), a Lessepsian species native to the Western Indian Ocean, were collected from bottom trawlers’ catches from 2012 to 2016 on the deep shelf off the southern coast of Lampedusa Island (Strait of Sicily, Central Mediterranean Sea). Since it first appeared in Iskenderun Bay (Turkey) in 1950, the Por’s goatfish has quickly spread in Levantine Sea waters to become a commercial species used by local fisheries, while continuing its range expansion along the south-eastern coasts of the Mediterranean. Because the Strait of Sicily currently represents the westernmost sector of this species distribution area, it might serve as a stepping-stone for this species’ expansion in the western basin of the Mediterranean. Supporting this hypothesis was our finding of specimens with post-spawning gonads. The pattern of westward expansion by the Por’s goatfish in the Mediterranean Sea and its settlement in the Strait of Sicily are discussed in relation to the warming trend over the last 30 years.

Leiopathes glaberrima is an important component of the deep coral forests of the Mediterranean Sea enhancing benthic biodiversity and forming an essential habitat for many marine organisms. It is a sessile species with high longevity; it is therefore highly affected by fishing impacts and has been listed as a representative taxon of Vulnerable Marine Ecoystems (VMEs). Since information on spatial distribution of L. glaberrima is still scanty and fragmented, an updated synopsis of its distribution in the Mediterranean is given, including two new records in the Strait of Sicily. On the basis of this updated information, hotspots of black coral off the Carloforte Island in the Sardinian Sea, on the Marco Bank and off the Pontine Islands in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea, and on the Malta Graben in the Strait of Sicily are proposed for implementation of Fishery Restricted Areas.

Single-species Gadget models were used to assess the effects of using a sorting grid mounted on the traditional trawl net used by Sicilian trawlers to exploit the deep-water rose shrimp in the Strait of Sicily. The main commercial by-catch species of this fleet is the European hake (Merluccius merluccius), often caught at sizes well below the minimum conservation reference size. Selectivity curves based on the results of an experimental survey carried out in the area using a commercial trawler equipped with an ad hoc-designed sorting grid were incorporated into single-species Gadget models to forecast the effects of changing fishery selectivity on the performance of the two stocks in terms of catch and biomass. The models included catch data from the Italian, Tunisian and Maltese fleets as well as MEDITS trawl survey data for the period 2002-2016. Several scenarios were defined to simulate the effect of the Italian trawlers’ adopting the sorting grid under different stock-recruitment assumptions. The results obtained, when compared with status quo simulations of fishing without a sorting grid mounted on the trawl net, indicated a beneficial effect for both stocks in terms of an increase in biomass and for the fleets in terms of the amount and size composition of annual landings.

Abstract Understanding drivers of fish maturity are essential to predict the productivity, stability, and resiliency of exploited populations. In terms of horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, size at maturity estimates date back to the 1940s and throughout its range. However, many older estimates may not reflect current maturity rates. This is because past methods were imprecise, or environmental or fishing effects may change maturity rates, and some stock areas have been overlooked. To address this data gap for the Central Mediterranean Sea, female horse mackerel size at maturity was estimated for two areas: the Strait of Sicily and the Tyrrhenian Sea. All ovaries were assigned a reproductive phase based on macroscopic methods, and the reliability of this method (94%) was validated with a microscopic method (i.e., gonad histology). Although the collected females exhibited similar condition, in terms of total body weight at a given length, as well as similar gonad-somatic indices, the size at median maturity in the Strait of Sicily was smaller (161 mm total length [TL]) than in the Tyrrhenian Sea (176 mm TL). Future sampling in a series of years with contrasting levels of productivity may help identify whether this is a broad latitudinal trend, or due to specific oceanographic drivers, such as estuarine outflow into the Tyrrhenian Sea or upwelling in the Strait of Sicily. The presence of a well-established population of the corkwing wrasse, Symphodus melops (Linnaeus, 1758), is reported for the first time from the central Mediterranean Sea (southwestern Sicily). Two specimens of the uncommon calappid crab Calappa tuerkayana Pastore, 1995 are reported from the central Mediterranean. One juvenile individual was caught in a trawl net at about 105 m depth on a detritus bottom, and one adult male was caught in a trammel net at 50 m depth in a similar habitat. Details about carapace ornamentation and fresh color of the adult, which complement previous descriptions are provided. Family Calappidae includes four species in the Mediterranean Sea. The study of the relationships among environmental factors, primary production, zooplankton community, and feeding behavior of fish species represents a key aspect to obtain a deeper knowledge of biological processes acting at ecosystem level. In this context, oceanographic data and biological samples were collected in two different surveys, carried out during late June 2011 and early July 2015 in the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea). Differences in abundance, biomass, and assemblage structure of zooplankton and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus Linnaeus, 1758) population were observed between the two surveys. Still, zooplankton biomass was significantly correlated to longitude, chlorophyll a recorded during the surveys (as a proxy of primary production), and oxygen concentrations. Such differences affected the isotopic composition of anchovy, which showed changes in δ15N and δ13C values between the two surveys. Mixing models identified different contributions of food sources in the two sampling periods, i.e., major consumption on large copepods and euphausiids in 2015 with respect to 2011, which was consistent with a greater availability of these preys in the environment in 2015. The obtained results evidenced that E. encrasicolus may be affected by any environmental change that influences the plankton community, which is the basis of the diet of these fishes. Such findings highlighted the importance to further investigate the trophic relationships among different compartments of the food web, as well as the possible environmental influences, in order to obtain a more complete picture of ecosystem functioning and also in the light of an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management. The largest semi-enclosed basin in the world, the Mediterranean Sea, is characterized by high biodiversity and heavy human pressure on the coastal system. The Strait of Sicily (SoS) represents the boundary between western and eastern Mediterranean sub-regions and is an important biodiversity hot spot. Given its ecotonal nature and it being a “crossroad” for the westward expansion of warm-temperate and tropical species from the Levantin basin, the SoS is likely to play a key role in future climate change related biodiversity changes within the Mediterranean. The complexity of the SoS ecosystem, characterized by wider shallow detritic and rocky banks on the continental shelf hosting large biodiverse communities, and peculiar circulation pattern, promotes species diversity and abundance. In addition, the deep-sea is characterized by the occurrence of extremely vulnerable habitats, such as deep-water communities of scleractinian corals, antipatharians, gorgonians, and red coral. We review the current knowledge on the main characteristics of the north sector of the SoS ecosystem. The SoS ecosystem is increasingly threatened by expanding anthropogenic pressures in the area and specific conservation measures should be implemented on a national and international level to protect the relevant and vulnerable habitats. The effective management and conservation of fishery resources requires knowledge of their spatial distribution and notably of their critical life history stages. Predictive modelling of the European hake (Merluccius merluccius L., 1758) distribution was developed in the south-central Mediterranean Sea by means of historical fisheries-independent databases available in the region. The study area included the international waters of the south-central Mediterranean Sea and the territorial waters of Italy, Malta, Tunisia and Libya. Distribution maps of predicted population abundance index, and probabilistic occurrence of recruits and large adults were obtained by means of generalized additive models using depth and seafloor characteristics as predictors. Presence/absence data of the two life stages was obtained using threshold values applied to the mean weight of the survey catches. Modelling results largely matched previously reported knowledge on habitat preference of the species and its critical life phases. Hake recruits showed an occurrence peak at 200 m depth with preference for soft bottoms. Large adults preferred deeper and harder bottom substrates. Prediction maps allowed to improve our knowledge on the distributional patterns of one of the most important shared stocks in the south-central Mediterranean. The combined use of field data on anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, Linnaeus, 1758) egg distribution in the Central Mediterranean Sea on both sides of the Strait of Sicily (Sicilian-Maltese and Tunisian waters) and Lagrangian simulations were used to assess the pattern of connectivity between these two sub-areas as a result of spawning activity. The field data were collected during ichthyoplankton surveys carried out in summer 2008 and 2010. The simulation runs showed considerable (up to 20%) rates of particle exchange in both directions (from Tunisian to Sicilian-Maltese waters and vice versa). However, considering the typical high mortality rates of anchovy early stages, the actual larval exchange rates across the Sicily Strait are supposed to be significantly lower (<1%), supporting the hypothesis that the anchovy population sub-units in the Strait of Sicily can be considered as separate fish stocks for the evaluation of their optimum exploitation rates. The tectonic framework of the northern sector of the Capo Granitola-Sciacca Fault Zone (CGSFZ), a NNE-oriented lithospheric strike-slip fault zone located in the Sicilian Channel (southern Italy), has been reconstructed with the aim to clarify the relationships between geometry and kinematics of the structures and the occurrence and distribution of the magmatic manifestations observed in the area. This has been achieved by the interpretation of a large dataset composed of 2-D multichannel seismic profiles, Chirp profiles, magnetic data and borehole information. In addition to the volcanic edifices known in the Graham and Terribile banks, this study has allowed to recognize several other magmatic manifestations. The magmatic occurrences consist of small volcanic cones, buried magma ascents and potential igneous sills. The CGSFZ is bounded by two strike-slip fault systems, the Capo Granitola Fault System (CGFS) to the west and the Sciacca Fault System (SFS) to the east, dominated by positive flower structures generated by tectonic inversion of NNE-oriented late Miocene extensional faults. Only the southern part of the CGFS shows the presence of a sub-vertical, N-S oriented strike-slip master fault. The sector between the two fault systems does not show a significant Pliocene-Quaternary tectonic deformation, except for its southern part hosting the Terribile Bank, which is dissected by WNW to NW-trending normal faults developed during late Miocene and later reactivated. This set of faults is currently active at the Terribile Bank, whereas is buried by Pliocene-Quaternary deposits in the central and northern sectors of the CGSFZ. The observed magmatism is driven by a mechanism of non-plume origin. Magmas have used as open paths the faults of the CGFS and SFS, which cut the whole lithosphere reaching the asthenosphere and producing partial melting by simple pressure release. Most of the magmatism develops along the strike-slip master fault associated with the CGFS and the normal faults affecting the Terribile Bank. The magmatic feeding of the Terribile Bank would be related to lateral magma migration coming from the structures of the SFS, which would use the open pathways represented by active normal faults. In the central-northern part of the CGSFZ, magmas migrate upward along lithospheric faults, then move laterally and rise toward the surface through NNE and NW-trending buried normal faults. These late Miocene faults do not reach the surface, and this may have favoured the emplacement of igneous sills, which in turn may explain the observed volcanic centres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small scale turbulence in the two main deep passages of the Sicily Channel was characterised for the first time with microstructure measurements collected during four cruises spanning a two year period. Large turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates ( ε ) were observed, with averaged values below the mixed layer reaching 10 −7 W kg −1 , confirming that the Sicily Channel is a hotspot for turbulence. Contrasted depth-averaged ε were observed between the two passages below the mixed layer: enhanced ε in the northeastern passage ranging from 1.3 × 10 −8 - 2.7 × 10 −7 W kg −1 over the different cruises, and much weaker ε in the southwestern passage ranging from 3.5 × 10 −9 to 7.7 × 10 −9 W kg −1 . This contrast in ε occurs due to a stronger deep flow at the northeastern passage, resulting in larger shear and stronger turbulence. Internal tides act as another important source of turbulence in both passages, modulating the subinertial flow and inducing shear instabilities. Enhanced turbulence was also revealed by additional measurements made downstream (with respect to the deep flow) in the northeastern passage towards the deeper Tyrrhenian Sea, as dense waters overflow above steep topography. A wave-wave parameterisation was tested for ε , which showed a reasonable consistency for the less turbulent southwestern passage, but not for the more turbulent northeastern passage, suggesting a difference in the mechanism of turbulence. This makes the tracking of such traffic all the more instrumental in mitigating possible detrimental environmental impacts. Against this background, the BIODIVALUE (an EU-funded project) vessel traffic interface has been developed, which allows the user to define a number of preferences within queries submitted to the same interface, such as distance from the Maltese shoreline of vessel records, typology of vessel, time window of requested vessel position records and whether vessel is anchored or in transit. The web-based interface provides operational ship position data for Maltese waters and historical equivalent data for the waters around the central Mediterranean island of Lampedusa and the ports of Augusta and Catania in Sicily. Outputs are generated as overlays on Google Maps, with the possibility of retrieving specific information (such as MMSI [Maritime Mobile Service Identity], ETA [Expected Arrival Time], vessel name, destination, vessel type, IMO number) on each ship position. A three-year-long AIS dataset for Maltese waters has been assessed through a MATLAB script in order to generate useful metadata (e.g. ship dimensions, speed, draught, direction) for different categories of shipping traffic in the form of visual plots and tables. The BIODIVALUE vessel traffic interface is a useful spatial tool to maritime stakeholders and decision-makers in the management of shipping traffic and its impacts by assisting in the identification of major shipping routes and characterisation of different bunkering areas. The present study analyses the artisanal fishery of Sciacca (Mediterranean Sea) through the investigation of fishing activities, resources and yields, in order to characterize for the first time one of the most important traditional coastal activities of the area. Further, the study evaluates the incidence of illegal artisanal fishing, this being one of the major threats to the good management of fishery. Landing surveys and interviews with professional fishermen (i.e. those operating on vessels provided with a fishing licence) were carried out from May 2006 to April 2007 in order to record catches, type of fishing gear used and fishing areas. At the same time, illegal artisanal fishing vessels – i.e. vessels without a licence whose catch is illegally sold in local markets – were also monitored. The artisanal fishery of Sciacca is multi-specific, exploring various resources with different techniques. The most used gear by both professional and illegal fishing vessels throughout the study period was the trammel net. Other less frequently used gear has seasonal use related to source availability, and some is mainly or exclusively used by one or the other category of fishing vessels. Overlapping between professional and illegal fishing vessels emerged in the exploitation of some fishing areas, mainly coastal (within 3 nautical miles). A strong competition between the two categories for commercial resources was highlighted. Underwater acoustic monitoring combined with real-time sea surface observations and numerical model forecasts could improve the efficiency of natural and anthropogenic sound source discrimination. In this work, acoustic sound pressure levels at different frequencies were compared with significant wave heights, measured using an X-band radar system, and then matched against independent data derived from a Simulating Waves Nearshore (SWAN) model in order to confirm their reliability. The acoustic data were recorded from a fixed buoy located in the Sicilian Channel at 4.9 km from the coast and 33 km from the X-band radar system installed at Cape San Marco (in the southwest region of Sicily). All data were acquired during two different periods: 28 February-16 March 2015 and 23 April-27 May 2015. The level of noise at the 16-Hz octave band showed the best linear correlation (R50:78), with in situ radar observations of significant wave height. Radar measurements of wave height coupled with in situ acoustic measurements give a characterization of the level of noise as result of sea state in a specific area. These measurements could be used to discriminate natural sources of noise (waves) from other sound sources, such as biological and anthropogenic sources. This discrimination contributes to understanding the impact of acoustic pollution on marine environments and provides a monitoring plan protocol for safeguarding biodiversity in the Mediterranean coastal areas. Tropical-like Mediterranean cyclones (medicanes) have been documented and investigated in the literature, revealing that their physical mechanisms are still poorly understood and likely not unique across cases. During late hours of 7 November 2014 a small-scale cyclone was detected over the Sicilian channel, affecting the Islands of Lampedusa, Pantelleria and Malta. Gust wind values exceeding 42.7 m s − 1 and a pressure drop above 20 hPa in 6 h were registered in Malta. Clear signatures of a well-defined cloud-free eye surrounded with convective activity of axisymmetric character were identifiable through IR satellite imagery during the late stages of the cyclone, resembling the properties of a hurricane. We investigate the cyclogenesis and posterior development of this small-scale cyclone as well as its physical nature; to this aim, a set of high-resolution sensitivity numerical experiments were performed. Hart's phase diagrams adapted to the Mediterranean region clearly reveal the tropical characteristics of the simulated storm. A numerical sensitivity analysis by means of a factor separation technique is used to gain quantitative insight on the roles latent heat release, surface heat fluxes and upper-level PV signatures (dynamically isolated through a PV-Inversion technique) have on the unfold of this singular event. Results show the importance of the upper-level dynamics to generate a baroclinic environment prone to surface cyclogenesis and in supporting the posterior tropicalization of the system. On the contrary, latent heat release and surface heat fluxes factors do not seem to contribute, as individual processes, to the genesis of the cyclone as much as it could be suspected, considering it behaves as a tropical-like cyclone. However, the asynchronous synergism between latent heat release and PV factors plays a crucial role for the intensification of the cyclone towards reaching the pure diabatic phase. The occurrence of the white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, in the Mediterranean Sea has been reported since the Middle Ages (476-1453). Several studies have documented its presence in various areas of the basin, but no comprehensive review of the distribution and status of this species is available for the area. We compiled a total of 628 white shark records from 476 to 2015. Data suggests that the white shark is more common in the western Mediterranean Sea, especially in the Adriatic Sea and in the Sicilian Channel and is more frequently observed during summer months. However, analysis using night-time satellite imagery showed the existence of an anthropogenic bias in the distribution of white sharks. All size classes have been recorded in the region. However, the highest occurrence of young of the year has been recorded in the Sicilian Channel, in the Adriatic Sea and in the Aegean Sea, in summer, suggesting these areas might serve as nursery grounds. In the Mediterranean Sea, the white shark exhibits a broad diet. The most common prey found include small cetaceans ( Tursiops truncatus, Stenella coeruleoalba), tuna ( Thunnus spp.), swordfish ( Xiphias gladius) and loggerhead sea turtle ( Caretta caretta). A total of 53 white shark records refer to interactions between sharks and humans that resulted in a detrimental impact on humans, which include 42 bites and 11 reports of the presence of human remains in the stomach of captured animals. Analysis of the temporal variation in mean total lengths of white sharks found a decreasing trend from 1913 to 2012. The Atlantic horse mackerel ( Trachurus trachurus ) is a semi-pelagic fish species with a wide geographical distribution and commonly found on the continental shelf. In recent years, the species has received some attention due to its ecological role in pelagic food webs. Stable isotope of nitrogen and carbon (δ 15 N and δ 13 C) and Stomach Content Analysis (SCA) of T. trachurus were adopted as tools to provide necessary knowledge on its feeding habits in the Strait of Sicily. The strong correlation found between δ 15 N and δ 13 C values with body length, together with significant ontogenetic shift evidenced by SCA, could be associated to changes in food availability, which in turn is triggered by environmental conditions. Spatial distribution of T. trachurus in the study area, mainly for small and medium size specimens, is linked to lower temperature, salinity and Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR sat ) values with higher aggregations on the Adventure Bank (i.e., an area characterized by periodic upwelling events). Larger size specimens mostly inhabited shallower waters characterized by higher temperature, salinity and PAR values, typical of the central-eastern part of the study area. Our results support the hypothesis that feeding behavior of T. trachurus is strictly linked to environmental factors (i.e. chiefly oceanographic conditions of the water column and day duration) that in turn influences the distribution of its prey. Four specimens of the northern brown shrimp Penaeus aztecus Ives, 1891, a West Atlantic species, were unexpectedly caught by bottom trawlers along the South coast of Sicily between Porto Empedocle and Mazara del Vallo (Central Mediterranean). The dispersal and transport of shrimp eggs and larvae via surface water circulation is suggested as the likely cause of its rapid westward spread since its first appearance in the Gulf of Antalya (Turkey) in 2009. The settlement of P. aztecus in Mediterranean coastal habitats may result in competition with the native caramote prawn Penaeus kerathurus (Forskål, 1775). The Strait of Sicily was recognized internationally as an “Ecologically or Biologically Significant Area” by the Contracting Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2014. However, basic aspects of its fish diversity are still unknown and most of the information comes from traditional trawl surveys. This paper provides the first detailed description, using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), of the composition and depth distribution of the demersal fish assemblages found on banks of the Strait of Sicily and the related habitat complexity from 35 to 240 m depth. A total of 24 families and 52 fish species were recorded and depth was consistently associated with a significant proportion of the variation of the fish assemblage. The highest species richness was observed at the shallowest depth layer (0–50 m) and significantly decreased, remaining almost constant, in deeper layers. Similarly the highest abundance was recorded at 0–50 m, where C. julis represented the most abundant species, and decreased progressively throughout the whole depth gradient. Although the factor habitat complexity explained only a small proportion of the fish assemblage variation, significant differences among different degrees of habitat complexity were observed, together with a general positive trend for species richness and abundance with increasing habitat complexity. The ROV also allowed us to observe some rare or poorly known fish species such as Scorpaenodes arenai, Hyporthodus haifensis, Myliobatis aquila, Gadella maraldi, Epinephelus caninus and Lappanella fasciata. These findings show that banks serve as reservoirs for fish abundance and biodiversity and that immediate environmental conservation and management actions represent a priority not only for Italy but also for other countries which share the same area. For the first time the structure of the anchovy stock was investigated in the Strait of Sicily: sampling locations were in Sicily, in Tunisia and in the Adriatic Sea. A morphological approach to stock discrimination which involves morphometric landmarks analysis was adopted. The aim of this work is to describe any morphological variations between the samples areas and individuate possible different populations in order to obtain useful information for management of shared resources between Tunisian and Italian waters. Furthermore sexual dimorphism was investigated. Results of morphometric landmarks may suggest a high level of overlapping among Sicily and Tunisia. Instead, between the Sicilian and Adriatic population, it was observed a certain degree of isolation, suggesting the existence of two anchovy sub-populations connected by a possible migration of a small number of individuals. No differences between male and female individuals was observed. Results support the likely existence of an anchovy metapopulation with several sub-populations, one inhabiting the northern and southern parts of the Strait of Sicily. From a management perspective and under the ‘precautionary approach’, these sub-populations should be treated as shared stocks and conserved.

Fish larvae data collected in year 2009 were used to examine the effects of particular environmental conditions on the structure of larval assemblages in two oligotrophic Mediterranean areas (the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Sicily). For this purpose, relationships with environmental variables (temperature, salinity and fluorescence), zooplankton biomass, water circulation and bathymetry are discussed. Hydrodynamic conditions resulted very differently between two study areas. The Southern Tyrrhenian Sea was characterized by moderate shallow circulation compared to the Strait of Sicily. In this framework, distribution pattern of larval density in the Tyrrhenian Sea was mainly driven by bathymetry, due to spawning behavior of adult fish. There, results defined four assemblages: two coastal assemblages dominated by pelagic and demersal families and two oceanic assemblages dominated by mesopelagic species more abundant in western offshore and less abundant in eastern offshore. The assemblage variations in the western side was related to the presence of an anti-cyclonic gyre in the northern side of the Gulf of Palermo, while in the eastern side the effect of circulation was not very strong and the environmental conditions rather than the dispersal of species determined the larval fish communities structure. Otherwise in the Strait of Sicily the currents were the main factor governing the concentration and the assemblage structure. In fact, the distribution of larvae was largely consistent with the branch of the Atlantic Ionian Stream (AIS). Moreover, very complex oceanographic structures (two cyclonic circulations in the western part of the study area and one anti-cyclonic circulation in the eastern part) caused the formation of uncommon spatial distribution of larval fish assemblages, only partially linked to bathymetry of the study area. Typically coastal larvae (pelagic families: Engraulidae and Clupeidae) were mostly concentrated in the offshore areas and off Capo Passero, where the presence of a thermo-haline front maintained their position in an area with favourable conditions for larval fish feeding and growth. Only recently included among the cetacean species thought to regularly occur in the Mediterranean, the rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) is an obscure and enigmatic member of this ensemble. Preliminary genetic evidence strongly indicates an Atlantic origin, yet the Mediterranean distribution for this species is conspicuously detached from the Atlantic, with all authenticated records during the last three decades being east of the Sicilian Channel and most within the bounds of the Levantine Basin. These dolphins are apparently a small, relict population, probably the remnant of a larger one, contiguous with that in the Atlantic and nowadays entrapped in the easternmost and warmest province. Abundance data are lacking for the species in the Mediterranean. Configuring acoustic detection software to recognise the apparently idiosyncratic vocalisations of rough-toothed dolphins in past and future acoustic recordings may prove useful for potential acoustic monitoring. Evidence accumulated so far, though scant, points to seasonal occupation of shallow coastal waters. Vulnerability to entanglement in gill-nets, contaminants in the region, and the occurrence of mass strandings (possibly in response to anthropogenic noise), are major conservation concerns for the population in the Mediterranean Sea.
