- Abstract
In the second half of the twentieth century it became generally accepted that the goal of the archivist’s work should be not only to reconstruct the history of the object’s producer, but also to question its genesis, preservation and the use of documentary nuclei over time. The result was a revisiting of the principles of historical method, thanks in part to the fruitful debate that was established between the community of archivists and that of historians.

SOCIAL structure , *SOCIAL systems , *SOCIAL clubs , *ARCHIVES , *HISTORIOGRAPHY - Abstract
Although the creation of archives is a phenomenon innate in the organization of every social system, the full growth of the discipline that examines their features and purposes is found only in the contemporary era and goes hand in hand with the formation of precise historiographic periods. From that point of view, archival work is not typified anymore by merely administrative “writing”, but by the production of research instruments and means of cultural communication, that is, “history books”. 8. Il Linguistic turn in prospettiva. Su Une histoire inquiète di Sabina Loriga e Jacques Revel.

Tasca, Luisa
- Abstract
The book traces the debate that absorbed the community of historians – and the humanities more generally – in the decades of the linguistic turn, the theoretical movement that placed language at the centre of philosophical reflection between the 1970s and 1990s. Examining the linguistic turn in the light of the category of postmodernism, the authors reconstruct the controversies, genealogies and ramifications of a movement that was anything but homogeneous. A discipline traditionally secure in its methods and results, history has emerged far more uneasy and doubtful about the possibility of producing objective and verifiable knowledge. The introduction to the issue Analogy and the Middle Ages sive twenty years of analogies presents issue n. 18 of Doctor Virtualis and traces the milestones of the journal. It first sketches some lines of the history of the journal and its main theoretical and historiographical inspirations, then highlights the reasons for the relevance of the theme of analogy, as an object used and thought of in the medieval centuries and as a tool for historiographical research, and finally concludes with the articulation of the issue.

This article aims to reflect on how analogy is understood and treated by the class of formal information processing methods that deal with analysing written text. In particular, we consider how machines that ‘understand’ analogies can be constructed. For this purpose, exemplifications from Augustine of Hippo’s De Civitate Dei will be used. The initial investigations carried out on this corpus, albeit limited, lead one to reflect on the theoretical and historiographical significance of the automatic treatment of analogy also in formulating or supporting interpretative hypotheses.

Poiesi ,Artefice ,Analogia ,Estetica ,Storiografia ,By period ,B108-5802 - Abstract
Starting from some aspects of the contemporary debate on metaphor, the article proposes a path through various figures of artifex to question the philosophical, cognitive and heuristic aim of analogy and defend its rhetorical dimension. The theme of the artifex and his creative-productive process often appears in the form of analogy. It has undergone significant variations throughout history, most notably the displacement of the domain and purpose of analogy from the transcendent to the immanent. An itinerary is proposed that begins with the Franciscan Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, who shares the main features of the Augustinian and monastic metaphysics of relationship in which the analogy of proportionality plays a central role not only in the structure of being, but also in the progress of knowledge. The question in the modern age is addressed with brief references to some figures of the Renaissance (Leon Battista Alberti, Leonardo da Vinci) and modern age (Baudelaire, Kandinsky) in which the interest shifts to immanence. Finally, the role of analogy in the creative processes outlined by Paul Valéry is explored, where it becomes the main function of the universal power of the mind. Concluding remarks are proposed, firstly theoretical, on the philosophical, cognitive and heuristic dimension of analogy in different historical periods; and then methodical on the use of analogy in the history of philosophy.

AWARENESS , *NARRATIVES - Abstract
From a critical-reflexive perspective, what is history? Is it a judgment, is it an understanding, must it only limit itself to narratives, or does its quest concern, instead, the determination of truth? Historiographical truth is a mutable construct that can be interpreted through two types of visions: sociocultural interpretations, thus circumscribed from a given point of view; or humanized interpretation, which focuses on the study of man as such, that is, as an individual placed within a specific historically determined society. It is therefore essential to approach History with proper awareness of these views, especially in teaching practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper inserts itself in the debate on (art) historiography and periodization, opposing linear and evolutionary models to anachronic and discontinuous ones. The latter are analyzed through Kunstwissenschaft, a new approach to art history, which emerged at the end of the 19th century, initially in the German speaking countries, in opposition to traditional historiographical models, anticipating actual practices, such as Visual Studies and Global Art History. In particular, this paper offers some examples of how Kunstwissenschaft reflected on its epistemic tools, confronting itself with the time in which art history started to reflect on its own status, the Renaissance. LAW enforcement , *CRIMINAL justice system , *ORGANIZED crime , *DISCRIMINATION in law enforcement , *RELIGIOUS militants , *DRUG traffic - Abstract
The article highlights the principal themes addressed in recent Italian and American historical studies of law enforcement, as well as proposals for removing major social obstacles such as discrimination in the police and the policing of social protest, Islamic terrorism and organized crime or the excessive use of force by law enforcement agencies against the citizenship. An introduction to historical studies on the origins of local law enforcement in the United States is followed by a description of the concept of policing, namely the interaction between police and citizens, a subject addressed by most American criminologists, sociologists and historians. On the other hand, Italian jurists and historians have preferred to focus on the history of the Italian state police (Polizia di Stato) or on the national gendarmerie (Arma dei Carabinieri), and to highlight the primarily the critical times of Fascism and the so-called 'Years of Lead'. The police function to counter crime, but to do so, they adapt themselves to the kind of crime being prosecuted. A comparative overview of the main issues addressed in the two historiographies illustrates how after the 9/11 attacks law enforcement evolved in both the United States and Italy specifically to fight Islamic terrorism, and how new special units have been formed to counter crimes such as drug trafficking and Mafia rackets. But structural changes in local and state law enforcement work are also connected with changes in the authority of the state, suggesting that historians need to explore more closely the connections between security bodies, citizens and social control. While there are abundant studies of the Fascist police and historians have paid a great deal of attention to policing in Liberal Italy, the history of policing in the Republican period is still a neglected topic. Yet without taking account of the police it is impossible to understand much of the history of the Italian Republic; the police mirror the society, politics and culture of Republican Italy and much remains to be done in this field. What is needed is not an internal or institutional, history, but a social, political and cultural history. The brief introduction to this collection of articles aims to explain why certain case studies have been chosen and to show how, without adopting an 'exceptionalist' interpretation, many specificities of the Italian case emerge from studying the Italian police in the Republican period.

Lorefice, Fulvio
- Abstract
This article focuses on Renzo De Felice's Mussolini il rivoluzionario, whose publication in 1965 represents a watershed moment in historiographical studies of fascism and its origins, in order to answer the question: how, to what extent, and why did the publication of Mussolini il rivoluzionario attract the attention of the intellectuals of the time? To this end, reviews of the volume are analysed and the most debated elements of De Felice's reconstruction and interpretation critically examined. Four historiographical 'nodes' are then discussed in the article: the dictator's intellectual and political profile; the reasons for his interventionist turn; the political features of the Fasci di Combattimento; and the Socialist Party's actions in relation to the First World War. De Felice's reconstruction of the reconstruction and political-ideal framework in which Mussolini's transition from socialism to fascism took place, together with his attempt to understand its terms and modalities, laid the foundations for new approaches to the subject.

Some excerpts of a seminar held on May 30, 1992, at the psychotherapy school Il Ruolo Terapeutico of Milan (Italy), published in 1996 with the title La persona e la tecnica. The Person and the Technique: Notes on the Technique and the Construction of Psychoanalytic Theory], are reprinted (Revised and expanded edition: Milan: FrancoAngeli, 2002). In these pages there are some considerations on the problem of historical reconstruction in psychoanalysis. It is emphasized the importance of not relying only on official, documented history, but of knowing also the emotional vicissitudes and the life of the protagonists of theory construction. The emotional history, transmitted through verbal and informal channels, is a constitutive element of the definition itself of the psychoanalytic discipline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This survey analyses the debate around the history of Argentine workers during the last military dictatorship (1976-1983). The origins of Argentinian labour history are reconstructed by focussing on local historiography and its relations with international historiography, and works published from the 1980s to 2000 are discussed. The developments, themes and the methods of this labour history of the last fifteen years are surveyed in order to give a broad picture of the tendences and the debates which have shaped its current configuration in Argentina. The success of communist “mythology”, its relative but undeniable success, – even stupefied, if it is related to its precarious material support – cannot be understood but in a long-term sense of history and, first of all, from the perspective of the myth and the imaginary. Lucian Boia, Romanian historian, considers that communism as a utopia is a mythology that has been programmed for a long time, inscribed not so much in the dialectics of economic and social contradictions as Marx believed; much deeper, it has become a fundamental archetype of the imaginary, and a long-lasting mental structure that has not been completely eroded over time. The utopia of communism will be treated as a mythology, by highlighting its most clear and active figures, putting into context and refining contemporary analysis through Marx’s work and other Marxist thinkers. In this perspective, the phenomenon of communism was and is a particular topic – undoubtedly dramatic – of a global historical mythology of a history, which is understood as the materialization of myths.

In the last years Italian historiography has paid a pretty fair attention to the issue of censorship in Modern Age, especially by focusing on the relationship between the Indexes (Indici) of the Catholic Church and the Italian society. A few monographs, which since 2005 have started to deal with the topic related to 16th and 17th centuries, are here analyzed and compared to outline the directions and trends of the current historical research. This study presents a comparative review of the works of G. Fragnito, U. Rozzo, V. Frajese, F. Barbierato, E. Rebellato, M. Sabato, M. Cavarzere, S. Landi, R. Savelli, M. Infelise. Abandoned some fixed schemes that affected research in the 1900s, historians have opened up new paths to study the subject. This new approach highlights details not so deeply investigated before, such as the formation process of creating different Indici, the relationship with political powers in the Italian peninsula, the divergences within Congregations and the impact that proibitions had on the different social classes of the country. Attention has often been focused on the ‘normalisation’ phase rather than on violent repression occured in 16th century. A special place is here given to the study of the institutional system and the functioning of censorship. The classification of the reading public according to different levels of freedom is as well widely stressed. In the texts two mainstream tendencies have been noticed: the former describes the effort of the censorship structures conceived as a single coherent project to keep society under control; the latter instead, aims to show the divisions inside the Church itself about the goals and methods to follow for the censorship. It is expected therefore a greater openness to foreign historiography that could give important contributions and strength to Italian studies; the opening may also be extended to other history branches and not only those related to books. All the Italian monographs analyzed are enlisted in the appendix.

40. How to evaluate History

A correct assessment of the History have to be based on an objective evaluation of each period on its own. Every historical period can be properly understood only if it is not linked to an abstract idea of continuous human progress and improvement. At the same time, a critical analysis of various cultural periods have to consider how these ones were lived and perceived by the societies living that period. A last level of interpretation have to be reserved to the mentality and feelings of the protagonists of the various cultural periods, because they could have a mislead perception of their own era, such as Giacomo Leopardi.

Pausanias arranges the archaiologiai of the Ionian Dodecapolis so that, for each individual city, any single piece of tradition is either accepted or rejected and put in its place in chronological order. This means writing the history. The Periegetes knows very well the so-called «panionian» version, which underlies his text; he tends to prefer this version and, when he talks about identity, he thinks according to its mechanisms. But he gives an account in which this version is mitigated through the comparison with other elaborations, and includes some aspects of these latter in his text. Pausanias integrates the «panionian» story with the local traditions of the poleis in an original account but he does this by applying the panionian perspective to the city traditions and by using and eventually adapting a chronological scheme taken from the local history or the mythography, where available, or from the oral tradition, if the collective memory preserves one.

- Abstract
The article demonstrates how academic historians of football no longer compete with traditional sports journalism, but with a new generation of public historians (writers, columnists and freelancers), who carry out well documented and rigorous research. By relegating the competitive dimension to the lower divisions academic historians, the article argues, risk losing touch and becoming increasingly irrelevant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HISTORIOGRAPHY , *QUESTIONING - Abstract
This contribution analyses the Franciscan and Anthonian historical path from the Sabatierian "Franciscan question" surpassed further by contributions that, in the meantime, have come to light thanks to the "rediscovery" of the Writings of St. Francis, indicating the current circumstances in relation to studies. The reflection on the Anthonian historiography that has emerged strongly in recent decades, through the importance of its Franciscan aspect, is more linear. The places and networks where these studies are vividly present are also indicated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The recent publication of the revised English edition of Unfabling the East by Jürgen Osterhammel, originally published in 1998, makes a masterly work of a leading figure in the contemporary international framework of global history available to a larger reading public. Inquiring into the ways in which European culture of the age of Enlightenment approached the Asiatic world, Osterhammel's book offers an original interpretative proposal, mainly focusing on the discontinuity between an inclusive Eurocentrism of the 18th century culture and the exclusive one of the following age. It is an important revision of the effects of the Saidean approach to the study of the European 18th century intellectual and cultural context, giving suggestions for further inquiries and investigations which are still valid many years since the first edition of the book. - Abstract
The review analyzes the results of an important editorial project devoted to the forms and trends of contemporary historiography. The sectors taken into account are not only the more traditional ones, such as the organization of research, archives, museums, and the teaching of history. The volume also presents the most recent trends in the use of history in the public sphere, such as memorial laws, judicial history, commissions for truth and reconciliation. The review examines the contents, methods and theoretical implications of this research, and the author suggests some concerns about the orientation of these transformations in the elaboration and presentation of the past. 46. LA RIFLESSIONE SUL «SOCIALISMO REALE».

Pons, Silvio
- Abstract
The role played by Rosario Villari as a public intellectual was closely connected to his political and historical reflections on Soviet Socialism. This paper analyses his interventions in two distinct moments. Firstly, Villari's contribution to debates on dissent in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union in the late 1970s, when he was a member of Parliament for the Italian Communist Party and an advocate of Eurocommunism. Secondly, his views on the decline and fall of Communism in Europe and Russia between 1989 and 1992. The evolution of Villari's interpretation, which ended up in a very critical assessment of the entire experience of Communism since 1917, had serious implications, in terms of historical thinking, on the legacy of the twentieth century. The paper deals with the relationship of collaboration between the diocese of Padua and the local University during the long episcopate of Girolamo Bortignon (1949-1982). Bortignon integrated university elements into his pastoral action, promoting the involvement of academics in the formation of the clergy and in the birth of the journal «Studia Patavina» and supporting the foundation of CUAMM (Collegio universitario aspiranti medici missionari). During the council period, the bishop supported the historical studies and, with the participation of university professors, launched the Istituto per la storia ecclesiastica padovana. He was attentive to the needs of the students, founding accommodation facilities and, at the end of the Sixties, opening places of aggregation not controlled by the Azione cattolica where university students could confront each other. The article closes briefly dealing with the attitude held by the Church of Padua when the terrorist violence involved and hit the city and the university. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. Spazi, forme e tempi della deindustrializzazione.
- Abstract
In November 2018 the Association "Amici di Passato e Presente" (Apep) organized a seminar at the University of Naples devoted to the deindustralization process, a rather neglected topic in Italian public debate. Starting from the methodological introduction by Roberta Garruccio, who pointed out how the processual dimension of deindustrialization reflects the manifold meanings of the concept itself, the seminar invited a comparison between case studies in the South and North of Italy, those of Milan (Giorgio Bigatti), Turin (Stefano Musso), Naples (Gabriella Corona and Stefano Parisi), Piombino (Annalisa Tonarelli) and Torre Annunziata, Naples (Enrica Morlicchio). The debate highlighted many points in common in different areas of the country: the fragility of the cultural heritage of the industrial era, the weak perception of the urban transformation and social impact of deindustrialization, the lack of memory of the factories, the controversial relationship between the latter and the context, both in terms of social and environmental impact.
