The analysis of Solon’s poetry and the comparison between it and the poetry and politics of archaic Greece allow the hypothesis that his audience was a hetaireia consisting of his relatives and allies. The difference between Solon and other poets linked to the hetaireia – e. g. Alcaeus or the Theognidea – may stem from an ideological difference between their audiences: the factions – generally aristocratic – that struggled for power and, consequently, the respective hetaireiai may have very different political positions with respect to their dealings with other cities and with the lower social classes, and with respect to maintaining their domination over internal opponents.

Le mariage grec est asymetrique en terme d’âge et les relations homoerotiques entre femmes, contrairement a certaines idees preconcues, ne sont pas plus egalitaires que les relations entre hommes. Pour analyser le lien entre âge et sexualite en Grece archaique, il convient de comprendre l’eros grec en distinguant l’asymetrie de l’âge de la reciprocite amoureuse (philotēs).

The interpretation of the act of ἐμβάτευσις, suggested by L. Gernet in Droit et prédroit en Grèce ancienne, could explain Alc. fr. 129,21-24 V. A comparison between Sappho fragment 17 V., the Brothers Poem, and other family poems suggests that fragment 17 is concerned with the poet’s brother, especially since this song addresses difficulties involved in plotting a course across the sea. The analysis of family and sacral poems in addition provides context for reflections about “pragmatic” approaches to archaic Greek poetry in general and Sappho’s audience in particular.

Despite the lack of archaeological evidence about archaic domestic andrones, a thematic, linguistic and pragmatic analysis confirms Athenaeus’ idea that the con- text of Alc. fr. 140 V. is a part of a ‘private’ building: the hypothesis that its context is a temple or a heroon has to be rejected.

Archaic Greek poems referred to a specific historical context and to a specific audience. To understand the meaning of these poems, it is necessary to reconstruct their contexts. Because of the lack of evidence about archaic Greece, different societies have to be compared: in the case of Sappho and Alcaeus, parallels are made between Lesbos and Sparta or Athens. However, because Spartan and Athenian society were structurally different, it is absurd to compare – as usual – Sappho to Spartan female agele and Alcaeus to Athenian hetaireia. An analysis of Sappho’s and Alcaeus’ corpora shows that only Athens can be a parallel to Lesbos.
