The premise of research in human physiology is to explore a multifaceted system whilst identifying one or a few outcomes of interest. Therefore, the control of potentially confounding variables requires careful thought regarding the extent of control and complexity of standardisation. One common factor to control prior to testing is diet, as food and fluid provision may deviate from participants' habitual diets, yet a self-report and replication method can be flawed by under-reporting. Researchers may also need to consider standardisation of physical activity, whether it be through familiarisation trials, wash-out periods, or guidance on levels of physical activity to be achieved before trials. In terms of pharmacological agents, the ethical implications of standardisation require researchers to carefully consider how medications, caffeine consumption and oral contraceptive prescriptions may affect the study. For research in females, it should be considered whether standardisation between- or within-participants in regards to menstrual cycle phase is most relevant. The timing of measurements relative to various other daily events is relevant to all physiological research and so it can be important to standardise when measurements are made. This review summarises the areas of standardisation which we hope will be considered useful to anyone involved in human physiology research, including when and how one can apply standardisation to various contexts. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), through their complex cargo, can reflect the state of their cell of origin and change the functions and phenotypes of other cells. These features indicate strong biomarker and therapeutic potential and have generated broad interest, as evidenced by the steady year-on-year increase in the numbers of scientific publications about EVs. Important advances have been made in EV metrology and in understanding and applying EV biology. However, hurdles remain to realising the potential of EVs in domains ranging from basic biology to clinical applications due to challenges in EV nomenclature, separation from non-vesicular extracellular particles, characterisation and functional studies. To address the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly evolving field, the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) updates its Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles, which was first published in 2014 and then in 2018 as MISEV2014 and MISEV2018, respectively. The goal of the current document, MISEV2023, is to provide researchers with an updated snapshot of available approaches and their advantages and limitations for production, separation and characterisation of EVs from multiple sources, including cell culture, body fluids and solid tissues. In addition to presenting the latest state of the art in basic principles of EV research, this document also covers advanced techniques and approaches that are currently expanding the boundaries of the field. MISEV2023 also includes new sections on EV release and uptake and a brief discussion of in vivo approaches to study EVs. Compiling feedback from ISEV expert task forces and more than 1000 researchers, this document conveys the current state of EV research to facilitate robust scientific discoveries and move the field forward even more rapidly.

ABSTRACT Quantitative analysis of electron spectroscopy data from techniques such as Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) typically requires the use of relative sensitivity factors (RSFs). Virtually, all routine XPS experiments attempt to turn peak intensities into elemental or chemical compositions using RSFs. The comparability and reproducibility of surface chemical analysis by electron spectroscopies therefore require the standardisation of RSFs and their use. RSFs may be determined either from theoretical calculations based on photo‐ionisation cross‐sections or empirically through direct measurement of homogeneous reference samples of known composition. The accurate use of sensitivity factors, even empirically determined RSFs, requires accounting for the effect of material differences on relative intensities, the so‐called ‘matrix effects’. ISO 18118:2024 is the most recently revised version of the ISO standard for the use and determination of empirical RSFs for quantitative analysis of homogeneous materials by AES and XPS. This article provides a summary of the new, updated standard and the methods described therein, noting in particular the revisions made since the previous edition, ISO 18118:2015. As the vernacular was re-assigned the functions that Latin fulfilled in the Middle Ages, close comparisons between these two languages stressed the urgent need for the standardisation of English. Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England saw the rise of codification and prescriptivism, two stages in the standardisation process that succeeded the selection, diffusion and acceptance of certain linguistic forms. A large number of works were published within the umbrella of codification, including grammars, spelling lists, pronouncing dictionaries or linguistic treatises, each targeting different areas of the language. James and Leslie Milroy (2012: 57) claim that ‘just as dictionaries prescribe uniquely correct spellings, so handbooks of usage prescribe uniquely correct grammatical constructions’, thus establishing a parallelism between the two. Most dictionaries published during the Early and Late Modern periods declare themselves prescriptive in their aims to provide the ‘True-spelling’ (Preston 1674: title page) of the English language, as if there was a false or fake alternative, thus vetoing all other orthographic variants. However, there arises an issue in this endeavour: spelling had become widely standardised by the time these dictionaries were available, except for some of the remnants of variation that continue to exist today. This paper addresses the standardisation of colour- and theatre-type words in historical British English for the purpose of assessing the impact that linguistic prescription had, if any, on the speakers’ spelling habits. As a corpus-based study, the analysis relies on a close comparison of usage and precept that draws correspondences between these two dimensions of language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Responsible Innovation has recently been taken up in public policies and discourses. However, it remains challenging to institutionalise its core dimensions – inclusion, anticipation, responsiveness, reflexivity, and transparency – in practice. De jure standardisation is increasingly seen as an instrument to embed the core principles of Responsible Innovation in innovation processes, because of its anticipatory and inclusive nature. Yet, Responsible Innovation within the standardisation literature is an under-researched field of study. This paper explores and evaluates the relative importance of Responsible Innovation's core dimensions in the standards development process. We identify eighteen criteria that are deemed essential to the quality of standardisation processes. The Best-Worst Method was used to rank these criteria on their perceived importance. ABSTRACT Vapour pressure deficit (VPD) is a critical measure of the atmospheric demand for water and can be used to assess short‐term and seasonal drought. To provide for probabilistic comparisons of VPD across space and time, we develop a Standardized Vapor Pressure Deficit Index (SVPDI). Similar to the way that other standardised drought indices are used, SVPDI allows for the analysis and comparison of changes in VPD across regions with different base level VPD values. It also should be useful for analysing impacts on vegetation that has varying levels of adaptation to high VPD. We use 1‐, 3‐, 6‐ and 12‐month timescales for the development of SVPDI and show that the gamma distribution is superior to other zero‐limited probability distributions for analysing VPD and, therefore, for calculating SVPDI. Then, focusing on the short‐term variations at the 1‐ and 3‐month timescales, we show how SVPDI has changed globally from 1958 to 2023 and how those changes differ from those of the commonly used Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index (SPEI). We find that SVPDI shows more widespread drying conditions that also are larger in magnitude compared to those of SPEI. Although the two indices are moderately well correlated across the terrestrial surface, we discover that they are more decoupled in humid and arid regions compared to dry sub‐humid and semi‐arid regions. Using four locations that have recently experienced severe drought, we find that SVPDI generally showed longer drought duration and more severe drought events in the last decade when compared to SPEI. Iron deficiency anemia is a significant global health concern, diagnosed by measuring hemoglobin concentrations in combination with plasma ferritin concentration. This study investigated the variability in ferritin reference intervals among laboratories in the Netherlands and examined how this affects the identification of iron-related disorders.Ferritin reference intervals from 52 Dutch ISO15189-certified medical laboratories were collected. Ferritin, hemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume data of non-anemic apparently healthy primary care patients, measured by four laboratory platforms (Beckman, Abbott, Siemens, and Roche), were collected (n=397,548). Median ferritin levels were determined per platform, stratified by sex and age. The proportion of ferritin measurements outside of the reference interval was calculated using the reference intervals from the 52 laboratories (using a total of n=1,093,442 ferritin measurements). Lastly, ferritin data from 3,699 patients as captured in general practitioner (GP) data from the PHARMO Data Network were used to assess the variation of abnormal ferritin measurements per GP.Median plasma ferritin concentrations were approximately four times higher in men and twice as high in postmenopausal women compared to premenopausal women. Moreover, there are substantial differences in the median plasma ferritin concentration between the four platforms. However, even among laboratories using the same platform, ferritin reference intervals differ widely. This leads to significant differences in the percentages of measurements classified as abnormal, with the percentage of ferritin measurements below the reference limit in premenopausal women ranging from 11 to 53 %, in postmenopausal women from 3 to 37 %, and in men from 2 to 19 %. The percentage of ferritin measurements above the reference limit in premenopausal women ranged from 0.2 to 11 %, in postmenopausal women from 3 to 36 % and in men from 7 to 32 %.The lack of harmonization in ferritin measurement and the disagreement in plasma ferritin reference intervals significantly impact the interpretation of the iron status of patients and thereby the number of iron disorder diagnoses made. Standardization or harmonization of the ferritin assays and establishing uniform reference intervals and medical decision limits are essential to reduce the substantial variability in clinical interpretations of ferritin results. Consequently, the traceability, accessibility, and sustainability of research outcomes are compromised. Decades after the advent of computer-aided 3D visualisation in cultural heritage, there is a critical need to define applicable methodology and comprehensive documentation standards. Web-based platforms necessitate technical infrastructures and clear scientific methodologies to ensure understandable model creation and sustainable accessibility to 3D research data. The Scientific Reference Model proposes an accessible academic framework for this kind of 3D reconstruction, aiming to facilitate broad adoption. Developed and tested in research projects and educational contexts, this model aims to establish clear, accessible 3D models on the web, serving as foundational references for future research and knowledge dissemination. Zooming in on the European Union's international identity, this paper argues that maturation, and the achievement of a solid international identity, may result from a process in which different identity traits are integrated, even strategically incorporated. It frames this hybridisation argument in terms of Dragon Power Europe and proceeds in two steps. In a first step, the paper develops an integrated analytical framework for studying the European Union's international identity by comparing the Normative Power Europe and Market Power Europe conceptualisations along three dimensions, namely drivers, actions and impact. In a second step, the paper demonstrates the framework's empirical value through an exploration of the European Union's functioning in relation to health information standardisation, investigating the logics behind the inclusion of a new chapter on diagnoses and syndromes associated with Traditional (Chinese) Medicine in the eleventh revision of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases in 2019. The involvement of the European Union and its member states in this specific case of health (information) standardisation shows initial but compelling evidence of NPE-MPE dynamics shaping the EU's international functioning, in particular its drivers, actions and impact. The French National Metrology Institute (LNE) initiated a series of events to identify priorities for test methods and their harmonisation that directly address regulatory needs in Nanomedicine. One of these workshops entitled "The International Standardisation Roadmap for Nanomedicine" held in October 2023 (Paris, France) brought together key experts in the characterisation of nanomedicines and medical products containing nanomaterials, including the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, SINTEF Industry and the metrology institutes of France, the UK, the USA and Canada, two flagship initiatives of the European Commission (PHOENIX and SAFE-n-MEDTECH Open Innovation Test Beds), representatives of a working party on mRNA vaccines at the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines (EDQM) and members of international standardisation and pre-normative organisations (including CEN, ISO, ASTM, VAMAS). Two take-home message came out from the discussion. First, developing standard test methods and Reference Materials (RMs) for nanomedicines is a key priority for the European Commission and various stakeholders. Furthermore, there was a unanimous recognition of the need for a unified approach between standardisation committees, regulators and the nanomedicine community. At the USA, Canadian and European level, examples of success stories and of future initiative have been discussed. Future perspectives include the creation of a dedicated Working Group under CEN/TC 352 to consolidate efforts and develop a nanomedicine standardisation roadmap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The European Green Deal is aiming for a transition from the current linear economic model to a much more sustainable and resource-efficient circular model. Since the construction industry is responsible for 37% of Europe-wide waste, it will be a key sector for the successful implementation of this goal. However, we can currently find many sector-specific challenges slowing the pace. On the one hand, the complexity of the sector and the multiplicity of actors involved. On the other hand, the dichotomy between the immanent uncertainty that lies within all reuse strategies and an ever-rising pressure for an increased technical performance respectively liability exclusion of building components. A successful transformation of the construction industry towards a circular economy would hence require changes throughout the whole life cycle of the building stock, an extensive and comprehensive exchange of information and the implementation of strategies for dealing with uncertainties. This includes also the development of new construction standards, which in turn can be expected to have an influence on the resulting architectural design. The focus of this paper is to present two current research projects on these topics, with a focus on the potential implications and future fields of action for designing architects.

This article introduces the challenges presented in establishing governance of autonomous vehicles, dealing with questions of liability, where domestic law needs to cohere with international transport conventions, Islamic jurisprudence, Supreme Court jurisprudence, and technical safety standards. The primary objective of the article is to assess the applicability of established legal norms governing carrier liability in traditional road transport contracts in the United Arab Emirates. These legal tenets, rooted in Islamic jurisprudence and drawn from historical sources such as the 'Al-Ahkam Al-Adliya Journal,' constitute the foundation of civil law in numerous Arab countries, including the Arab Gulf States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and others. Melding legal and technical perspectives, this study provides legal insights for judges, arbitrators, and legal practitioners, and offers solutions to the liability challenges that may arise when autonomous vehicles begin operating on UAE streets or any other Arab country. For a long time, ecological monitoring across Australia has utilised a wide variety of different methodologies resulting in data that is difficult to analyse across place or time. In response to these limitations, a new systematic approach to ecological monitoring has been developed in collaboration between the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network and the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water - the Ecological Monitoring System Australia (EMSA). A qualitative approach involving focus groups and semi-structured interviews was undertaken to review perceptions of the introduction of the EMSA protocols amongst Natural Resource Management practitioners and other key stakeholders. We found that environmental management stakeholders recognise there will be many advantages from the standardisation of ecological monitoring. However, key concerns emerged regarding the capacity needed to implement the standard protocols, the utility of the resultant data for regional projects, and the scope for adaptive co-management under the EMSA. Stakeholders emphasised the need for autonomy and flexibility, so their participation in protocol development can facilitate regional adoption of the standards. Respondents' concerns about a perceived lack of genuine consultation and acknowledgement of feedback revealed the importance of clear communication at all stages of an environmental management project aiming to standardise practices. Our findings indicate that reflexivity will be vital to address the complexity involved in standardisation of ecological monitoring. Formal processes of social learning will need to be integrated into environmental management approaches to account for the increasing complexity of socio-ecological systems as they are challenged by global change. Objectives: To study the feasibility of using surgical procedure manager (SPM), a digital checklist platform, to standardise surgical steps of open hernia repair and monitor the operative performance. Methodology: A retrospective study on all open mesh repair of inguinal hernia under local anaesthesia from September 2019 to November 2021 at the Prince of Wales Hospital was performed. The operative outcomes of patients having operations with or without the use of SPM were compared. Procedures using SPM had operation steps shown as a digital checklist inside the theatre. The time used for each surgical step was recorded and analysed. The operative performance of the surgeons was analysed by observing the trend of the mean operation time over time. Results: A total of 123 patients were recruited, of which 52 were using the SPM. The median age of patients was 75 (range 49–93) years. A decreasing trend in the mean operation time for dissection, mesh placement, wound closure and total operation time was observed in surgeries using SPM. There was no significant difference in the operation time, theatre time, total length of stay, blood loss and readmission rate between the SPM and non‐SPM groups. The proportion of basic surgical trainees as coached surgeons in the SPM group was significantly higher (SPM = 52% vs non‐SPM = 28%, P =.07). Conclusions: The use of SPM did not significantly prolong the operation time and produce comparable operative outcomes in open hernia repair. It provided the additional advantage of standardising operation steps and monitoring the performance of surgical trainees during their training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Standards are critically important for smartening the grid because they affect the interoper-ability, compatibility, efficiency, and realisation of new technologies and services. In this paper we assess the contribution of EU funded Horizon 2020 projects to adapting or initiating new Smart Grid standards. We provide a comprehensive overview of the Smart Grid standardisation ecosystem and identify opportunities for researchers and innovators to participate in stan-dardisation activities. We identify 225 Horizon 2020 Smart Grid projects and explore which have contributed to the creation or revision of Smart Grid standards. We identify the type of standardisation activities undertaken and explore the factors that influence engagement. We have found that 21 % of EU Horizon 2020 Smart Grid projects engage in some level of standardisation activities. Of these projects the majority (60 %) are involved in understanding standards, 31 % actively engage in influencing standards, while 8 % successfully participate in elaborating new standards. Our study demonstrates that despite the complexity of the Smart Grid Standardisation ecosystem, EU funded researchers and innovators play an important role in the standardisation process. The Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme is a quality improvement initiative covering the National Health Service in England. The programme aims to standardise clinical practices and improve patient and system level outcomes by utilising data‐driven insights and clinically‐led recommendations. There are GIRFT workstreams for every medical and surgical specialty, including urology. Defining features of the GIRFT methodology are that it is clinically led by experienced clinicians, data‐driven, and specialty specific. Each specialty workstream conducts deep‐dive visits to every hospital, analysing performance data and engaging with clinicians and management to identify and share improvement priorities. For urology, GIRFT has completed deep‐dive visits and published reports outlining priority areas for development. Reports include recommendations pertaining to streamlining care pathways, reducing the acuity of care environments, enhancing emergency services, optimising utilisation of outpatient services, and workforce training and utilisation. The GIRFT academy provides guides for implementing best practices specific to priority areas of care. These include important disease pathways, and GIRFT‐advocated innovations such as urology investigation units and urology area networks. GIRFT offers clinical transformation, cost reduction, equity in access to care, and leaner models of care that are often more environmentally sustainable. Evaluation efforts of the programme have focussed on assessing the adoption of GIRFT recommendations, understanding barriers to change, and modelling the climate impact of advocated practices. Approaches aimed at regulating artificial intelligence (AI) include a particular form of risk regulation, i.e. a risk-based approach. The most prominent example is the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act). This article addresses the challenges for adequate risk regulation that arise primarily from the specific type of risks involved, i.e. risks to the protection of fundamental rights and fundamental societal values. This is mainly due to the normative ambiguity of such rights and societal values when attempts are made to select, interpret, specify or operationalise them for the purposes of risk assessments and risk mitigation. This is exemplified by (1) human dignity, (2) informational self-determination, data protection and privacy, (3) anti-discrimination, fairness and justice, and (4) the common good. Normative ambiguities require normative choices, which are assigned to different actors under the regime of the AI Act. Particularly critical normative choices include selecting normative concepts by which to operationalise and specify risks, aggregating and quantifying risks (including the use of metrics), balancing value conflicts, setting levels of acceptable risks, and standardisation. To ensure that these normative choices do not lack democratic legitimacy and to avoid legal uncertainty, further political processes and scientific debates are suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This systematic review aimed to provide an overview of test protocols used to measure peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) in adults with Down syndrome (DS) and to determine how generalisable the outcomes are for the entire population of adults with DS by describing the sample characteristics of these studies and their impact on VO2peak. A literature search (PROSPERO CRD42022309560) was performed (18 July 2023) using the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, APA PsycINFO, Web of Science, Embase and SPORTDiscus. For articles to be included, they had to be peer‐reviewed pubications, reporting VO2peak or VO2max for individuals with DS separately, with a sample of n ≥ 5 and a mean age ≥18 years. Systematic reviews and meta‐analyses were excluded but their reference lists were searched for additional papers to include. Studies were evaluated for risk of bias following the guidelines of Kmet et al. The results were summarised with frequency statistics. Forty‐three studies were included in this systematic review. Sample sizes of included adults with DS ranged from n = 4–226, with a total of n = 1498 adults with DS being included. Most studies (29/43) used the same standardised maximal exercise treadmill protocol to measure VO2peak in adults with DS, and 33 out of 43 studies used at least one objective criterion to determine a valid maximal effort. Participants were predominantly male, under 40 years old, and overweight or obese. Additionally, the diversity of study samples was lacking or not reported. The most widely used, standardised, maximal exercise test treadmill protocol is recommended for future use in research and practice, including objective criteria to determine valid maximal effort. The current study samples are not representative of the population of adults with DS in terms of sex, age and diverse backgrounds and therefore likely overestimate VO2peak of this population. This article investigates the nature and implications of the European Union (EU)'s recent discourse and policy approach towards Internet standards. Internet is a network of interconnected networks that can communicate with one another thanks to shared protocols, most often produced by standard-developing organisations. This research analyses the effects of the discursive turn of the EU – as part of its new digital sovereignty agenda – and investigates whether it has materialised into actual changes in the way the EU engages with the making process of Internet standards since 2019. This article shows that the EU's approach towards these arenas has been and remains inconsistent. It argues that the EU's increasing 'digital assertiveness' and digital sovereignty discourses have led to a few noticeable policy evolutions, whose effects remain largely unintended and that could further normalise state-based interventions in the Internet architecture. Chemotherapy, pelvic radiotherapy (including total body irradiation) and novel compounds used to treat children and teenagers with benign or malignant diseases can lead to impaired fertility. For prepubertal female patients at high risk of treatment-related infertility, upfront storage of ovarian tissue is increasingly being recognised as standard of care. No surgical guidelines exist to ensure best practice technique. We reviewed current UK practice to assess surgical management. A ten-item, anonymous multiple-choice survey was distributed to the lead surgeons in all paediatric centres in England/Wales undertaking ovarian procurement for cryopreservation. There are currently 18 centres in England and Wales that provide ovarian procurement for cryopreservation. Responses were received from 100% of the invited paediatric surgical oncology centres in England and Wales. 39.3% of participants stated that in their centre <10 cases of ovarian harvest are performed annually. In 32.1% of centres >20 cases are undertaken per year. In 64% of centres surgery is performed by a paediatric surgeon with interest in oncology or fertility preservation. The majority of cases were performed by a Consultant or Senior Registrar (89%). Regarding the surgical technique, 82% of respondents stated they gain access to the abdominal cavity using standard 3-port laparoscopy, 7% use single-port laparoscopy. Most frequently used energy devices for ovary/ovarian tissue resection were Ligasure™ (44%) and Harmonic Scalpel™ (18.5%). 96% of respondents perform a total oophorectomy, 1 respondent stated they perform a hemi-oophorectomy. 53% stated they place the ovary into a retrieval bag only if the ovary was too big for easy removal via the camera port, 28.5% always place it in a retrieval bag. Most surgeons use the umbilical port site for retrieval (82%). This national survey shows significant heterogeneity in the surgical management of ovarian procurement for cryopreservation. To ensure best outcomes, research into the various surgical methods is necessary to provide data for a standardised best practice approach. This is a level II evidence study. Cookies are an essential part of today's internet. In the EU, the ePrivacy Directive (read with the EU GDPR) requires prior informed consent for using cookies. Usually, websites use cookie banners to meet the informed consent requirement. However, due to a lack of harmonisation of cookie law across the EU, varying cookie guidelines by data protection authorities of different member states, and varying implementation of cookie consent requirements by websites, users face differing cookie banners on different websites. Having to face differing cookie banners requires additional cognitive effort and time to read, understand, evaluate, and select options on each banner. Moreover, the way consent is sought remains deceptive. Websites use dark patterns, vague language, positive framing, and nudging to elicit user consent. This paper proposes standardised cookie banners to solve the various problems with cookie consent banners. The paper suggests that the standardised banner must have standardised timing of display, position on the website, text and language, presentation, consent options, and way of consenting. The professionalisation, institutionalisation and standardisation of transitional justice has often been critiqued for pushing more informal, vernacular or experimental approaches off the radar. While this concern is legitimate and needs to be addressed, this article explores the continued relevance of standardised approaches, and of a shared language of transitional justice more specifically. I develop this argument against the background of recent events in the Philippines where, in May 2022, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of the former dictator, won the presidential elections. In this article I show that there has been a multiplicity of context-sensitive, vernacular and experimental transitional justice initiatives to deal with intersecting and multilayered legacies of violence, but that what has been missing is an overarching framework as expressed through the discourse of transitional justice, and the potential to forge collaborations and coalitions on the basis thereof. The case of the Philippines hints at the potential of a more ecological understanding of transitional justice in which justice actors involved in standardised and vernacular, formal and informal, state and non-state, top-down and bottom-up approaches recognise each other and certain shared objectives through the shared language and normativity of transitional justice. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are promising regenerative therapeutics that primarily exert their effects through secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs). These EVs – being small and non‐living – are easier to handle and possess advantages over cellular products. Consequently, the therapeutic potential of MSC‐EVs is increasingly investigated. However, due to variations in MSC‐EV manufacturing strategies, MSC‐EV products should be considered as highly diverse. Moreover, the diverse array of EV characterisation technologies used for MSC‐EV characterisation further complicates reliable interlaboratory comparisons of published data. Consequently, this study aimed to establish a common method that can easily be used by various MSC‐EV researchers to characterise MSC‐EV preparations to facilitate interlaboratory comparisons. To this end, we conducted a comprehensive inter‐laboratory assessment using a novel multiplex bead‐based EV flow cytometry assay panel. This assessment involved 11 different MSC‐EV products from five laboratories with varying MSC sources, culture conditions, and EV preparation methods. Through this assay panel covering a range of mostly MSC‐related markers, we identified a set of cell surface markers consistently positive (CD44, CD73 and CD105) or negative (CD11b, CD45 and CD197) on EVs of all explored MSC‐EV preparations. Hierarchical clustering analysis revealed distinct surface marker profiles associated with specific preparation processes and laboratory conditions. We propose CD73, CD105 and CD44 as robust positive markers for minimally identifying MSC‐derived EVs and CD11b, CD14, CD19, CD45 and CD79 as reliable negative markers. Additionally, we highlight the influence of culture medium components, particularly human platelet lysate, on EV surface marker profiles, underscoring the influence of culture conditions on resulting EV products. This standardisable approach for MSC‐EV surface marker profiling offers a tool for routine characterisation of manufactured EV products in pre‐clinical and clinical research, enhances the quality control of MSC‐EV preparations, and hopefully paves the way for higher consistency and reproducibility in the emerging therapeutic MSC‐EV field. This paper critically evaluates the prospective influence of ISO 20022, a widely recognised communications standard, on payment services. ISO 20022 provides a standardised and extendable framework aimed at improving efficiency, interoperability, and customer experience in the financial sector. The paper examines how ISO 20022 application can drive revolutionary improvements in payment processing, speeding up transaction processes, and increasing data richness. It also emphasises the importance of taking a balanced approach to ISO 20022 adoption, taking into account both the benefits and obstacles. While ISO 20022 offers enormous opportunity for modernising payment services, organisations must overcome a number of challenges, including technological improvements, data migration and regulatory compliance, to fully realise its promise. By accepting ISO 20022 and addressing its related obstacles, stakeholders can realise the revolutionary benefits of this standard, paving the way for a more efficient and interoperable payment environment. Cybersecurity resilience as a concept and EU policy approach encompasses, in broad terms, the preparedness of organisations against and the ability to recover from cyber-attacks. Policy and law makers in the European Union have started endorsing strategies moving both towards reactive measures mitigating the consequences of cybersecurity incidents and proactive measures geared towards prevention. Recently, a political agreement was reached on a new horizontal Regulation addressing cyber resilience of products with digital elements. An essential aspect of the Cyber Resilience Act is technical standardisation to support its goals. How appropriate is however the European Standardisation system for such a role in EU cybersecurity law? The paper argues that for European standards to be conceptualised as a building block of cyber resilience in the European Union, their development process must be inclusive and open, and a prerequisite for that is that the ESOs jointly work towards the common goal of developing and adopting European standards in support of the EU cyber resilience policy and law. This collaborative approach is mandated both by the nature of cyber resilience and cybersecurity as regulated fields, but also the changing nature of standardisation aspiring to contribute to areas pertaining to societal interests and fundamental rights. This paper explores the significant role that standardisation plays in the regulation and governance of artificial intelligence (AI) within the European Union (EU). As AI technologies rapidly advance, they bring about important societal implications involving privacy, fairness, transparency and other relevant ethical considerations. As a result, legislators and policymakers around the world are joined by a common drive to provide legislative solutions and regulatory frameworks that guarantee that the ongoing integration of AI systems into society is consistent with fundamental rights and democratic values. This paper critically examines the EU Regulation on AI (AI Act), which delegates the definition of essential requirements for high-risks AI systems to harmonised standards, underlying the significance of standardisation in ensuring technical feasibility and compliance with EU laws and values. At the forefront of this discussion there is the increasing influence of AI-related standardisation across social, economic, and geopolitical domains, with a particular focus on the crucial role played by Standard Developing Organisations (SDOs) in the regulatory and governance processes. This paper contributes to the legal scholarship by critically analysing the regulatory approach chosen for the EU’s AI Act, contesting the adequacy of the New Legislative Framework (NLF) for AI governance, and arguing that the reliance on harmonised standards risks undermining democratic accountability and fails to sufficiently safeguard fundamental rights without a more inclusive and transparent standard-setting process. The article focuses on the exclusion of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) from the European Commissions standardisation request in support of the AI Act, and asseses its potential impact on EU law-making and regulatory consistency. Ultimately, the analysis aims to contribute to the understanding of standardisation dynamics, offering insights into its profound implications for AI governance and the broader digital sphere. In order to reduce time and costs, while maintaining a high level of product quality, effective implementation of systems engineering processes may be beneficial for small and medium-sized enterprises. However, applying a prescriptive generic system engineering standard in the enterprise, without any consideration of the company's organisation, background and context, is inappropriate. Moreover, due to severe resource limitations, the difficulties in following and complying with a standard are even more obvious in SMEs. In this context, this paper explores a framework to help SMEs evaluate the maturity of processes, promote a progressive deployment and standardisation of their engineering processes to manage manufacturing projects, based on the experience and practices underway in SMEs and with reference to international systems engineering standards. Our proposal is to stand by companies to help them evolve their engineering processes by progressively aligning them with systems engineering standards without disrupting the overall organisation and practices of the company. Background: Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is now established as a causal risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and accurate laboratory measurement is of pivotal importance in reducing Lp(a) associated risk. The consensus statement by HEART UK in 2019 included recommendations to improve standardisation of clinical laboratory measurement and reporting of Lp(a). Methods: A 16 question, electronic audit survey was circulated to 190 accredited clinical biochemistry laboratories to assess the adoption of these recommendations in the UK. Results: Responses were received from 65 of 190 laboratories (34%). Only 5 (8%) did not offer Lp(a) measurement. Of those providing the test, 23% (n = 14) offered an in-house service (IHS), the remaining laboratories (77%; n = 46) used an external referral service (ERS). The majority (10 of 14 or 71%) of IHS laboratories responded with details of their method, stating whether it minimised sensitivity to the effect of Lp(a) isoform size and used calibrators certified for traceability to the WHO/IFCC reference material, however, only a minority ERS laboratories (13 of the 46 or 28%) were able to specify the method used by their referral laboratory. Of the laboratories who specified their reporting units, 6 of 10 IHS and 7 of 23 ERS laboratories reported in nmol/L. Among the 60 laboratories who responded, the HEART UK recommendations appear to have been adopted in full by only 3 IHS laboratories. Conclusions: Further efforts are needed to standardise the measurement and reporting of Lp(a) so that results and interpretation are comparable across clinical biochemistry laboratories in the UK. Artificial intelligence (AI) for ultrasound scanning in regional anaesthesia is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary field. There is a risk that work could be undertaken in parallel by different elements of the community but with a lack of knowledge transfer between disciplines, leading to repetition and diverging methodologies. This scoping review aimed to identify and map the available literature on the accuracy and utility of AI systems for ultrasound scanning in regional anaesthesia. A literature search was conducted using Medline, Embase, CINAHL, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library. Clinical trial registries, a registry of doctoral theses, regulatory authority databases, and websites of learned societies in the field were searched. Online commercial sources were also reviewed. In total, 13,014 sources were identified; 116 were included for full-text review. A marked change in AI techniques was noted in 2016–17, from which point on the predominant technique used was deep learning. Methods of evaluating accuracy are variable, meaning it is impossible to compare the performance of one model with another. Evaluations of utility are more comparable, but predominantly gained from the simulation setting with limited clinical data on efficacy or safety. Study methodology and reporting lack standardisation. There is a lack of structure to the evaluation of accuracy and utility of AI for ultrasound scanning in regional anaesthesia, which hinders rigorous appraisal and clinical uptake.
