Abstract: Just a few years ago, no one could imagine that ice swimming could evolve into a competitive sport. In the past, people swimming in ice-cold water were called madmen and, at best, were studied as scientific objects. Today regular competitions in ice swimming over different distances (ice mile, ice km, and shorter distances such as 50m, 100m, and 200m), and different disciplines are organized (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly). National championships, as well as continental and world championships, are also held, with new records set regularly. In this overview, we summarize the historical development of ice swimming up to a competitive sport and explore the risks in this nascent sports discipline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Le wakeboard connaît une croissance rapide en France depuis les années 2000. Il est considéré comme un sport extrême du fait de la survenue possible de lésions graves durant sa pratique. Plusieurs études américaines ont été menées concernant la traumatologie dans le wakeboard mais actuellement aucune étude française n'a été publiée. Nous avons souhaité nous intéresser à la traumatologie grave survenant lors de la pratique du wakeboard en France. On compte environ 4000 licenciés par an au sein de la Fédération française de Ski nautique et de Wakeboard, mais le nombre de pratiquants réguliers avoisinerait plutôt les 150 000. Notre étude s'appuie sur des données rétrospectives collectées par le médecin fédéral. Nous nous sommes intéressés aux traumatismes graves, au sein de pratiquants licenciés, en haut niveau ou amateurs. Soixante-quatre blessures graves chez des wakeboarders ont été répertoriées entre 2015 et 2019. L'incidence des traumatismes graves était de 0,7 pour 1000 heures de pratique pour le haut niveau et de 0,02 pour 1000 heures de pratique pour les amateurs. Concernant la localisation des traumatismes, la plupart concernaient le membre inférieur et principalement le genou. Concernant la nature des traumatismes, la plupart étaient des entorses. Nous avons également dénombré 3 décès au cours de notre étude. Le wakeboard est un sport qui compte de plus en plus de pratiquants en France et est pourvoyeur de traumatologie grave, voire mortelle. Notre incidence des traumatismes est inférieure à celle observée dans d'autres études, probablement parce que nous n'avons étudié que la traumatologie grave. Les mesures de sécurité dont le port obligatoire du matériel de protection tels que le gilet d'impact et le casque nous semblent essentielles. Wakeboarding has experienced a rapid growth in France since the early 20s. It is considered an extreme sport due to the possible occurrence of serious injuries during its practice. Several American studies have been conducted on wakeboard trauma but currently no French study has been published. We therefore wanted to focus on the serious trauma occurring during the practice of wakeboarding in France. The French Federation of Water Skiing and Wakeboarding counts around 4000 members per year, but the number of regular practitioners would rather be around 150,000. Our research is based on data collected by the doctor of the federation. We have carried on a retrospective study focused on serious trauma, among licensed, high-level or amateur practitioners, in a retrospective study. Sixty-four serious injuries in wakeboarders were recorded between 2015 and 2019. The incidence of severe trauma was 0.7 per 1000 hours of practice for the high level and 0.02 per 1000 hours of practice for amateurs. Regarding the location of trauma, most concerned the lower limb and mainly the knee. Regarding the nature of the trauma, most were sprains. We also counted 3 deaths during our study. Wakeboarding, a sport that has an increasing number of practitioners in France, is a source of serious or even fatal trauma. The incidence of trauma we find in this study is lower than observed in other studies because it looks at severe trauma. Safety measures, including the compulsory wearing of protective equipment such as impact vests and helmets, seem essential to us. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Suite à la découverte de cas d'allergie alimentaire au natto depuis 2004, une nouvelle « chaîne » allergologique a été découverte, avec à l'origine des piqûres (ou l'ingestion) de méduses chez des patients adeptes de sports nautiques, et un allergène commun entre méduses et natto : l'acide poly-gamma-glutamique (PGA). Les interactions entre ces différents éléments et les utilisations potentiellement très larges du PGA font l'objet de cette mise au point. Following the discovery in 2004 of cases of natto food allergy, a new "allergological connection" has been described resulting from jellyfish stings or ingestion of jellyfish among adepts of marine sports, and involving an allergen common to both jellyfish and natto, namely gamma-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA). This paper focuses on the interactions between natto, γ-PGA and jellyfish, as well as the potentially wide-ranging uses of γ-PGA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
