Different yarn spinning methods with different fiber combinations provide an optimization for the consumer requests of durability, functionality, comfort, and price. Vortex yarns and the fabrics produced from these yarns have aroused interest for the last years owing to lower yarn production cost and the satisfying fabric comfort properties. Within this work, core-spun vortex knitted fabrics of three different yarn count (400, 300, and 200 dtex) with six different core yarn type (70 dtex Polyvinyl alcohol, 110/36 dtex/filament polyester yarn, 80/36 dtex/filament polyester yarn, 110/333 dtex/filament micro polyester yarn, 50/96 dtex/filament, 120 dtex staple polyester vortex yarn) and two different sheath sliver types (100% viscose, polyester-viscose blended sliver) were studied. Moisture management transport property (MMT), water vapor permeability, and air permeability properties of those knitted fabrics were evaluated comparatively. Obtained results were statistically evaluated using three-way ANOVA test. It was determined that core yarn type, sheath sliver type, and yarn linear density were generally influential factors on MMT, water vapor permeability, air permeability properties of the core-spun vortex fabrics at significance level of 0.05. Correlation analyses between yarn hairiness and water vapor permeability as well as between yarn hairiness and air permeability were indicated. The conducted work provides an initial phase toward a better understanding of influence of some core-spun vortex yarn parameters on comfort properties of knitted fabrics. © The Author(s) 2023.

In this article, we investigate new constructions of optical Heisenberg spherical optical ferromagnetic spin of timelike magnetic fluids by de Sitter frame. Also, we approach spherical magnetic flows geometrically. Thus, we get total magnetic spherical phases of magnetic spherical timelike fluids. In this study, cotton/lyocell fabrics were bleached with ultraviolet radiation accompanied by TiO2. Photocatalytic characteristic of TiO2 was utilized for bleaching. Oxygen radical generation from TiO2 surface under UV radiation was ensured. The effect of TiO2 concentrations between 1-300 g/L was investigated. Optimum pH, temperature and durations were determined for the best bleaching effect. Hydrogen peroxide bleaching was carried out and the results were compared with photobleaching. The changes on the tenacity and hydrophilicity characteristics of the fabric were investigated. Oxygen radicals in the TiO2 bleaching bath were determined with Electron Spin Resonance technique and fluorescein assay. An alternative environmental friendly bleaching method which depends on catalytic reactions was presented as a result of the performed experiments. © Chamber of Textile Engineers.

In this paper, we derive new conditions for spherical optical electromagnetic Heisenberg flow S?-density of S?-optical spherical fibers in Heisenberg SH2. Also, we present approximately original constitutions of spherical optical Heisenberg electric flux in antiferromagnetic model in Heisenberg SH2. At the same time, we introduce some determinations for electrical Heisenberg flow of antiferromagnetic microscale with optical electroosmotic potential in Heisenberg SH2. Additionally, electromagnetic S?-density for spherical S?-fluids are constructed in uniform Heisenberg magnetic S?-fluid fibers by optical determinations by using antiferromagnetic model in Heisenberg SH2. © 2021 Elsevier GmbH

In this study, new sound-absorbing composite materials in the form of nanofiber web-reinforced nonwovens and sandwich structures were produced by incorporating polyurethane (PU) nanofibers of different durations to recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle waste nonwovens in order to execute environmentally friendly noise control in the lower frequency region. Effect of nanofiber spinning duration on the prepared structures was examined and the results were compared to commercial sound absorbers. Nanofiber spinning period optimization studies were done by producing nanofibers from 15 wt% PU solution for several durations and 5, 20, 60 and 120 min were chosen as the nanofiber spinning durations. The bead free PU nanofibers of 509.9 nm diameter were spun on the 250, 500 and 750 g/m2 needle punched nonwovens for the selected durations in order to produce the nanofiber web-reinforced nonwovens, afterward sandwich structures were prepared by laminating them with another nonwoven of the same. Noise reduction coefficient (NRC) values of all samples were calculated after the sound absorption coefficients (SACs) have been measured using a two-microphone impedance tube. It was seen that as nanofiber production time increased, resonance frequencies decreased and thicker nanofiber webs provided more effective sound absorption in the lower frequency range. There were statistically significant differences between noise reduction coefficients (NRCs) of the composites depending on the nanofiber spinning duration. In particular, 1560 (nanofiber web produced for 60 min) added nonwovens had the highest NRCs of all durations. However, in sandwich structures, better sound absorption coefficient (SAC) values were not obtained as the nanofiber spinning time increased. Amogst all samples, H750-1520-H750 had the highest NRC value of 0.574 with a thickness of 8.471 mm. H250-1560 which was formed by spinning nanofibers on H250 for 60 min was also regarded as a good sound absorber with a thickness of 1.548 mm and 0.435 NRC. The produced materials may be referred to as potential environmentally friendly sound absorbers with a value added utilization area for recycled polyethylene terephthalate fibers. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

In this study, 100% viscose yarns were spun at different delivery speed and nozzle air pressure values (within a range of 300-450 m/min and 0.46-0.58 MPa, respectively) by using Murata Vortex spinning system (MVS). Then, the effect of these parameters on physical properties of yarns (such as irregularity, hairiness, tensile strength, breaking elongation, yarn density and diameter) was analysed comparing with the results given in literature for various fiber types. The results show that yarn delivery speed and nozzle air pressure have no effect on yarn irregularity, while they affect hairiness, breaking elongation, diameter and density of yarns. On the other hand, an increase in nozzle air pressure has a slight effect on yarn tenacity while yarn delivery speed seems to have no effect in this work. © 2020, Chamber of Textile Engineers.

In this study, powernet warp-knit fabrics were designed using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarns melt-spun with three different amounts (20, 25, and 30 wt.%) of barium titanate (BaTiO3) and 30 wt.% elastane yarns. The resulting fabrics were characterized by antimicrobial activity, cytotoxicity, electromagnetic shielding properties, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses, stiffness tests at MD and CD (machine and cross directions), and pressure measurements using wireless pressure sensors. According to the results, the newly-designed pressure garments would help in the rehabilitation of cerebral palsy patients to improve motor skills and to prevent complications by training muscles with the needed tight structure and electric stimulus onto limbs. Bu çalışma kapsamında pamuk/lyocell karışımı selülozik kumaşlar TiO2 varlığında ultraviyole (UV) ışığıyla ağartılmıştır. Ağartma işleminde TiO2’nin fotokatalitik özelliğinden faydalanılarak UV ışık altında oksijen radikalleri salımı yapması sağlanmış, ortaya çıkan radikaller vasıtasıyla ağartma işlemi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmalarda 1-300 g/L arasında değişen TiO2 konsantrasyonunun etkisi incelenmiştir. En iyi ağartma etkisi için gerekli olan pH derecesi, optimum sıcaklık değerleri ve süresi araştırılmıştır. Uygulamalar sonrasında yapılan spektrofotometre ölçümleriyle beyazlık indeksleri belirlenmiştir. Hidrojen peroksitle uygulamalar yapılarak foto-ağartmayla elde edilen sonuçlar karşılaştırılmıştır. Foto ağartma sonrasında kumaşın mukavemet ve hidrofilite özelliklerindeki değişim incelenmiştir. Elektron Spin Rezonans (ESR) ölçümleriyle ve floresin analiziyle TiO2 ağartma flottesindeki oksijen radikalleri saptanmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre, katalitik reaksiyonlarla etki gösteren, minimum kimyasal tüketimiyle çevreye duyarlı alternatif bir ağartma yöntemi ortaya konmuştur.

In this study, we investigate new type of spherical electromagnetic flow S?-density of S?-optical fibers. Then, we give some different conditions for optical spherical electric flux in antiferromagnetic model. Moreover, we investigate some results for electrical flow antiferromagnetic microscale for Lorentz force by electroosmotic velocity. Finally, optical electromagnetic S?-phase of spherical S?-fluids is performed in homogeneous magnetic S?-fluid fibers by optical results with antiferromagnetic approach. © 2021 Elsevier GmbH

The chemical recycling of cellulosic fibres may represent a next-generation fibre–fibre recycling system for cotton textiles, though remaining challenges include how to accommodate fibre blends, dyes, wrinkle-free finishes, and other impurities from finishing. These challenges may disrupt the regeneration process steps and reduce the fibre quality. This study examines the impact on regenerated viscose fibre properties of a novel alkaline/acid bleaching sequence to strip reactive dyes and dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneureas (DMDHEU) wrinkle-free finish from cotton textiles. Potentially, such a bleaching sequence could advantageously be integrated into the viscose process, reducing the costs and environmental impact of the product. The study investigates the spinning performance and mechanical properties (e.g., tenacity and elongation) of the regenerated viscose fibres. The alkaline/acid bleaching sequence was found to strip the reactive dye and DMDHEU wrinkle-free finish from the cotton fabric, so the resulting pulp could successfully be spun into viscose fibres, though the mechanical properties of these fibres were worse than those of commercial viscose fibres. This study finds that reactive dyes and DMDHEU wrinkle-free finish affect the viscose dope quality and the regeneration performance. The results might lead to progress in overcoming quality challenges in cellulosic chemical recycling.

The one-dimensional (1D) mesoporous and interconnected nanoparticles (NPs) enriched composite Co3O4-CuO nanofibers (NFs) in the ratio Co:Cu = 1/4 (Co3O4-CuO NFs) composite have been synthesized by electrospinning and calcination of mixed polymeric template. Not merely the mesoporous composite Co3O4-CuO NFs but also single mesoporous Co3O4 NFs and CuO NFs have been produced for comparison. The choice of mixed polymer templates such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) for electrospinning is responsible for the formation of 1D mesoporous NFs. The HR-TEM result showed evolution of interconnected nanoparticles (NPs) and creation of mesoporosity in all electrospun NFs. The quantum confinement is due to NPs within NFs and has been proved by the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) study and the UV-vis-NRI diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The high intense photoluminescence (PL) spectra showing blue shift of all NFs also confirmed the quantum confinement phenomena. The lowering of PL spectrum after mixing of CuO in Co3O4 nanofibers framework (Co3O4-CuO NFs) proved CuO as an efficient visible light response low cost cocatalyst/charge separator. The red shifting of the band gap in composite Co3O4-CuO NFs is due to the internal charge transfer between Co2+ to Co3+ and Cu2+, proved by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Creation of oxygen vacancies by mixing of CuO and Co3O4 also prevents the electron-hole recombination and enhances the photocatalytic activity in composite Co3O4-CuO NFs. The photocurrent density, Mott-Schottky (MS), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies of all NFs favor the high photocatalytic performance. The mesoporous composite Co3O4-CuO NFs exhibits high photocatalytic activity toward phenolic compounds degradation as compared to the other two NFs (Co3O4 NFs and CuO NFs). The kinetic study of phenolic compounds followed first order rate equation. The high photocatalytic activity of composite Co3O4-CuO NFs is attributed to the formation of mesoporosity and interconnected NPs within NFs framework, quantum confinement, extended light absorption property, internal charge transfer, and effective photogenerated charge separations.

Chitosan-blended cellulose monoacetate nanofibers were prepared through electrospinning process. Neat nanofibers and their sodium hydroxide-treated analogs were used as support surfaces for protease immobilization via physical adsorption method. Morphologies of the nanofibers were observed with a scanning electron microscopy. Chemical analyses were conducted with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analyses were carried out with differential scanning calorimeter and thermogravimetric analyzer. Immobilized enzyme activities were measured by using casein substrate. In order to test the stability of immobilized enzymes, the tests were repeated until the immobilized enzyme activity was leveled off. The results reveal that well uniform cellulose monoacetate/chitosan nanofibers were obtained, and nanofiber structures are transformed from rounded to more flattened morphology after enzyme activation test. Glutaraldehyde activation has positive effect on sodium hydroxide-treated samples, and the highest immobilization yield as about 83% was observed for glutaraldehyde-treated cellulose monoacetate/chitosan samples. Sodium hydroxide treatment before glutaraldehyde activation shows the best results for protease immobilization on cellulose monoacetate and cellulose monoacetate/chitosan nanofibers. Operational stability increases after sodium hydroxide treatment and glutaraldehyde activation. Glutaraldehyde activation effectively increased the cycle number after sodium hydroxide treatment and about 20% of enzyme activity was still retained after seven cycles at cellulose monoacetate/chitosan samples. This percentage is higher at pure cellulose monoacetate nanofibers than cellulose monoacetate/chitosan nanofibers and measured around 33.5%. This study examined the influence of pin spacer apparatus attachment on compact yarn quality parameters and physical properties of knitted fabrics manufactured using those 100% cotton compact yarns. Two groups of compact yarns were spun on regular compact yarn spinning frame with and without addition of pin spacer apparatus which is placed at the end of the drawing unit of regular compact yarn spinning frame. Totally eight yarns were spun at four different yarn number levels (Ne 24/1, Ne 30/1, Ne 36/1 and Ne 40/1) and two different spinning conditions (with and without pin spacer apparatus). Spun yarn types were then knitted on the industrial sized plain knitting machine. Knitted fabrics were used in the greige and dyed form to evaluate their bursting strength (kPa), dimensional change, abrasion related mass loss (%), pilling resistance, air permeability (mm/s) and colour difference. Test results were then statistically evaluated and influence of pin spacer attachment on yarn quality parameters and fabric properties was determined. In the frame of this experimental work, attachment of pin spacer apparatus improved compact yarn characteristics especially at yarn evenness, imperfection and hairiness values. In case of knitted fabric properties, it was found that pin spacer apparatus attached compact yarn utilization significantly improved air permeability properties of knitted fabrics. © 2019, © 2019 The Textile Institute.

Electrospun cellulose acetate nanofibers (CA-NF) have been modified with perfluoro alkoxysilanes (FS/CA-NF) for tailoring their chemical and physical features aiming oil-water separation purposes. Strikingly, hybrid FS/CA-NF showed that perfluoro groups are rigidly positioned on the outer surface of the nanofibers providing superhydrophobic characteristic with a water contact angle of ∼155°. Detailed analysis showed that hydrolysis/condensation reactions led to the modification of the acetylated β(1 → 4) linked d-glucose chains of CA transforming it into a superhydrophobic nanofibrous mat. Analytical data have revealed that CA-NF surfaces can be selectively controlled for fabricating the durable, robust and water resistant hybrid electrospun nanofibrous mat. The -OH groups available on the CA structure allowed the basic sol-gel reactions started by the reactive FS hybrid precursor system which can be monitored by spectroscopic analysis. Since alkoxysilane groups on the perfluoro silane compound are capable of reacting for condensation together with the CA, superhydrophobic nanofibrous mat is obtained via electrospinning. This structural modification led to the facile fabrication of the novel oil/water nanofibrous separator which functions effectively demonstrated by hexane/oil and water separation experiments. Perfluoro groups consequently modified the hydrophilic CA nanofibers into superhydrophobic character and therefore FS/CA-NF could be quite practical for future applications like water/oil separators, as well as self-cleaning or water resistant nanofibrous structures.

In this experimental study, we investigated the effects of core yarn diameter and cover yarn type on the mechanical properties of composite yarns produced using a hollow spindle twisting machine according to the method of covering. Composite yarns containing stainless steel (SS) metal wires with diameters of 50 mu m and 100 mu m were produced with seven different cover yarns varying in their raw material and structure. These cover yarns were as follows: polypropylene, cotton, core-spun polyester/cotton, continuous filament polyester, continuous filament polyamide 6.6, core-spun polyester/polyester, and polyester cut fibre yarns. The mechanical properties measured were tensile behaviour and stiffness. According to the findings of the statistical analyses performed using the experimental values, the core yarn diameter, cover yarn type and the interactions of these factors were all significant factors affecting the tenacity, elongation at break, work of rupture and stiffness properties of the composite yarns. Composite yarns containing continuous filament polyamide 6.6 cover yarn showed higher tenacity values, while the maximum elongation at break was obtained for the composite yarns containing continuous filament polyester cover yarn. Both polyester and polyamide 6.6 possessed higher work of rupture values among the other types of cover yarns. An increase in the SS wire diameter resulted in a significant increment in stiffness values. The results of this study implied that it is important to give importance to component yarn types when designing composite yarns with desired physical properties.

Electrospinning of polyacrylic acid (PAA) nanofibres (NF) incorporating β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (β-CD-IC) of quercetin (QU) was performed. Here, β-CD was used as not only the crosslinking agent for PAA nanofibres but also as a host molecule for inclusion of QU. The phase solubility test showed enhanced solubility of QU due to the inclusion complexation; in addition, the stoichiometry of QU/β-CD-IC was determined to be 1:1. Computational modelling studies confirmed that 1:1 and 1:2 complex formation are desirable; 1:1 complex formation was chosen to have higher weight loading of QU. SEM images showed that PAA/QU/β-CD-IC-NF were bead-free and uniform. XRD indicated that PAA/QU/β-CD-IC-NF were amorphous in nature without the crystalline peaks of QU. Comparative results revealed that the release profile of QU from PAA/QU/β-CD-IC-NF was much slower but greater in total than from PAA/QU/β-CD-IC-film. Moreover, high antioxidant activity and photostability of QU was achieved in PAA/QU/β-CD-IC-NF. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

In this study, for the first time cross-linking of linear aliphatic diamine-based main-chain polybenzoxazine (MCPBz) electrospun nanofibers were accomplished by two-step approach consisting of photo and thermal curing. Initially, two novel MCPBz resins which comprise of a benzophenone unit in the polymer main-chain were synthesized and uniform MCPBz nanofibers were produced by electrospinning. At first step, photo curing was performed by free radical polymerization initiated by UV-light and thermal stability of nanofibers was enhanced. At second step, thermal curing was carried out at different temperatures (150-225 degrees C) and ring opening and cross-linking of benzoxazine groups in the fiber structure were achieved. After two-step curing, cross-linked MCPBz nanofibers were obtained as free-standing material with good mechanical properties. Moreover, it was shown that these two crosslinked MCPBz nanofibers were structurally stable and maintained their fibrous morphology at high temperatures (400 degrees C), in good solvents (chloroform, DMF, 1,4-dioxane, DMAc, THF) and highly concentrated strong acids (HCl, HNO3, H2SO4). The present study demonstrates a solution-processed humidity sensor based on poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene]:polyvinylpyrrolidone (MEH-PPV:PVP) organic microstructured composite thin film. The capacitive type humidity sensor has been fabricated in the surface type geometry of Al/MEH-PPV:PVP/Al, wherein organic composite (MEH-PPV:PVP) has been deposited onto the aluminium electrodes by electrospinning technique. The structural and morphological properties of organic thin film have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The humidity sensing properties of the sensor have been investigated at ∼1 volt AC operational bias, by measuring the capacitance as a function of a broad range (20–90%) of relative humidity (RH). The temperature and operational frequency dependency of the capacitance of the sensor has also been analyzed in detail. The proposed sensor exhibits high sensitivity (114 fF/% RH @ 100 Hz), small hysteresis (∼2% RH) and fast response (18 s and 8 s for adsorption and desorption processes, respectively). Compared with traditional spin-coated and drop-casted organic humidity sensors, the microstructure composite based sensor has demonstrated significantly improved sensing parameters, highlighting the unique advantages of the electrospinning process for humidity sensor fabrication. The possible humidity sensing mechanism of the proposed capacitive sensor has also been elaborated. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel nanofibers are a potential candidate for textile-based drug-release applications. Polycarboxylic acids 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) and citric acid (CA) are low-cost alternatives reported to easily crosslink electrospun PVA hydrogel. These can be directly added into the spinning solutions. One of the most efficient non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Naproxen (NAP), was selected as a model drug for this study. The release mechanisms of drug-loaded electrospun PVA nanofibers are based on the diffusion of the drugs through the swollen PVA fibrous matrix and the release due to partial dissolution of the matrix. Fibre properties are influential factors for yarn properties. Cotton, whose physical properties vary depending on the cultivation region, is still a very common fibre used in the textile industry. Properties such as fibre length, fineness, strength and maturity affect yarn tensility, evenness, imperfections and hairiness. Four different 100% cotton blends were used as raw material (American cotton, Aegean cotton, Urfa cotton, Greek cotton) to be converted into 20 tex compact yarns separately. HVI parameters of each blend type starting from the bale until the 2nd drawing passage machine revealed that yarn processing stages and machinery are influential factors for fibre the properties of fibres that are produced on a spinning line. Additionally ANOVA tests supported the idea that the evenness, tensility, yarn imperfections, and hairiness parameter of yarns produced from various cotton blends were statistically different. Photocatalytic activity (PCA) on semiconductors is known to be majorly influenced by specific surface area and intrinsic lattice defects of the catalyst. In this report, we tested the efficiencies of 1D ZnO catalysts of varying fiber diameter (80 nm and 650 nm of inner diameter) in two formats, viz. core–shell and hollow nanofibers, where the former is calcined to yield the latter. These nanofibrous catalysts were produced by combining electrospinning and atomic layer deposition processes which were then subjected to thorough characterization including photoluminescence (PL) unveiling the details of intrinsic defects/densities. During the thermal treatment, intrinsic defects are reorganized and as a result a new PL band is observed apart from some significant changes in the intensities of other emissions. The densities of various intrinsic defects from PL are compared for all samples and juxtaposed with the PCA. Careful scrutiny of the various results suggested an anti-correlation between surface area and PCA; i.e., higher surface area does not necessarily imply better PCA. Beyond a limit, the most deterministic factor would be the density of surface defects rather than the specific surface area. The results of this study enable the researchers to fabricate 1D semiconductor photocatalysts while striking the balance between surface area and density of defects.

The development of nonwoven meshes based on cellulose acetate (CA) reinforced by cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is reported. The meshes were electrospun from 15 wt% CA (Mn = 30,000) in dimethylacetamide/acetone (1:2, w/w) solutions with various concentrations of CNC dispersions. The investigated six levels of CNC dispersions in CA solutions were: 0, 0.075, 0.147, 0.225, 0.300 and 0.382 wt%, which corresponded to 0, 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 1.99 and 2.55 wt% of CNC in solid fibers. The basis of the impact of CNC nano-particles on fiber diameter and morphology was explored by assessing their contributions to the viscosity, conductivity and homogeneity of CA/CNC solutions. CA/CNC nonwoven meshes spun from suspensions with 0.075 wt% CNC had best results in morphology and fiber uniformity. Additionally, mechanical properties of CA nonwoven meshes with five levels of CNC loading (0, 0.50, 1.00, 1.50 and 1.99 wt%) were examined. The CA nonwoven mesh with 0.50 wt% CNC showed best mechanical properties, and its elastic modulus (E) was improved to an average value of 1.68 GPa from 1.17 GPa of neat CA nanofiber nonwoven mesh. These improved meshes would have applications such as separation membranes, supports for catalysts and sensors, engineered tissues and other smart materials.

During recent years, electrospinning has become a powerful technique for the cost-effective production of fibrous materials with diameters ranging from a few nanometers up to a few micrometers. In a conventional electrospinning system the produced fibers are collected on a flat grounded collector in a random manner, resulting in isotropic non-woven fibrous mats. Many researchers have been focusing on the modification of the electrospinning collectors for inducing fiber orientation since aligned fibrous mats exhibit unique mechanical, electrical and optical properties rendering them highly attractive in many fields. Unlike other reported collector modification approaches developed for inducing fiber alignment via electrospinning, a very simple concept for producing aligned polymer fibers is presented herein, based on the modification of the electric field profile by replacing the flat metallic collector employed in a typical electrospinning set-up, with a concave one. The electric field profile developed in the case of the flat and the concave collectors was simulated performing a finite elements analysis. Most importantly electrospun meshes were produced and quantification of fiber alignment with a Fourier transform method on different deposition sites of the concave collector showed an up to 70% fiber alignment in the center area. Here we demonstrate the combination of electrospinning and hollow cathode plasma-assisted atomic layer deposition (HCPA-ALD) processes by fabricating flexible polymer-GaN organic-inorganic core-shell nanofibers at a processing temperature much lower than that needed for the preparation of conventional GaN ceramic nanofibers. Polymer-GaN organic-inorganic core-shell nanofibers fabricated by the HCPA-ALD of GaN on electrospun polymeric (nylon 6,6) nanofibers at 200 °C were characterized in detail using electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, selected area electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence measurements, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Although transmission electron microscopy studies indicated that the process parameters should be further optimized for obtaining ultimate uniformity and conformality on these high surface area 3D substrates, the HCPA-ALD process resulted in a ∼28 nm thick polycrystalline wurtzite GaN layer on polymeric nanofibers of an average fiber diameter of ∼70 nm. Having a flexible polymeric core and low processing temperature, these core-shell semiconducting nanofibers might have the potential to substitute brittle ceramic GaN nanofibers, which have already been shown to be high performance materials for various electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Herein, polybenzoxazine based cross-linked cellulose acetate nanofibrous membrane exhibiting enhanced thermal/mechanical properties and improved adsorption efficiency was successfully produced via electrospinning and thermal curing. Initially, suitable solution composition was determined by varying the amount of the benzoxazine (BA-a) resin, cellulose acetate (CA) and citric acid (CTR) to obtain uniform nanofibrous membrane via electrospinning. Subsequently, thermal curing was performed by step-wise at 150, 175, 200 and 225 °C to obtain cross-linked composite nanofibrous membranes. SEM images and solubility experiments demonstrated that most favorable result was obtained from the 10% (w/v) CA, 5% (w/v) BA-a and 1% (w/v) CTR composition and cross-linked nanofibrous membrane (CA10/PolyBA-a5/CTR1) was obtained after the thermal curing. Chemical structural changes (ring opening) occurred by thermal curing revealed successful cross-linking of BA-a in the composite nanofibrous membrane. Thermal, mechanical and adsorption performance of pristine CA and CA10/PolyBA-a5/CTR1 nanofibrous membranes were studied. Char yield of the pristine CA nanofibrous membrane has increased notably from 12 to 24.7% for composite CA10/PolyBA-a5/CTR1 membrane. When compared to pristine CA membrane, CA10/PolyBA-a5/CTR1 nanofibrous membrane has shown superior mechanical properties having tensile strength and Young’s modulus of 8.64 ± 0.63 MPa and 213.87 ± 30.79 MPa, respectively. Finally, adsorption performance of pristine CA and CA10/PolyBA-a5/CTR1 nanofibrous membranes was examined by a model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compound (i.e. phenanthrene) in aqueous solution, in which CA10/PolyBA-a5/CTR1 nanofibrous membrane has shown better removal efficiency (98.5%) and adsorption capacity (592 μg/g).

We report the design, fabrication, and characterization of novel, low-cost, and modular miniaturized nanofiber electrospinning sources for the scalable production of non-woven aligned nanofiber mats with low diameter variation. The devices are monolithic arrays of electrospinning emitters made via stereolithography; the emitters are arranged so each element has an independent line of sight to a rotating collector surface. Linear and zigzag emitter packing were evaluated using a PEO solution with the aim of maximizing the throughput of nanofibers with the smallest diameter and narrowest distribution. Current versus flowrate characterization of the devices showed that for a given flowrate a zigzag array produces more current per emitter than a linear array of the same emitter pitch and array size. In addition, the data demonstrate that larger and denser arrays have a net gain in flow rate per unit of active length. Visual inspection of the devices suggests uniform operation in devices with as many as 17 emitters with 300 μm inner diameter and 1.5 mm emitter gap. Well-aligned nanofiber mats were collected on a rotating drum and characterized; the 17-emitter device produced the same narrow nanofiber distribution (∼81 nm average diameter, ∼17 nm standard deviation) for all tested flow rates, which is strikingly different to the performance shown by 1-emitter sources where the average fiber diameter significantly increased and the statistics notably widened when the flowrate increases. Therefore, the data demonstrate that massively multiplexing the emitters is a viable approach to greatly increase the throughput of non-woven aligned nanofiber mats without sacrificing the statistics of the nanofibers generated. The production of dry nanofibers by the 17-emitter array is estimated at 33.0 mg min-1 (1.38 mg min-1 per mm of active length), which compares favorably with the reported multiplexed electrospinning arrays with emitters distributed along a line. © 2017 IOP Publishing Ltd.

WOS:000410253800040 PubMed ID: 28887981 The main objective of this study was to fabricate poly (e-caprolactone) (PCL)-based auxetic nanofiber membranes and characterize them for their mechanical and physicochemical properties. As a first step, the PCL nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning with two different thicknesses of 40 pm (called PCL thin membrane) and 180 pm (called PCL thick membrane). In the second step, they were tailored into auxetic patterns using femtosecond laser cut technique. The physicochemical and mechanical properties of the auxetic nanofiber membranes were studied and compared with the conventional electrospun PCL nanofibers (non-auxetic nano fiber membranes) as a control. The results showed that there were no significant changes observed among them in terms of their chemical functionality and thermal property. However, there was a notable difference observed in the mechanical properties. For instance, the thin auxetic nanofiber membrane showed the magnitude of elongation almost ten times higher than the control, which clearly demonstrates the high flexibility of auxetic nanofiber membranes. This is because that the auxetic nanofiber membranes have lesser rigidity than the control nanofibers under the same load which could be due to the rotational motion of the auxetic structures. The major finding of this study is that the auxetic PCL nanofiber membranes are highly flexible (10-fold higher elongation capacity than the conventional PCL nanofibers) and have tunable mechanical properties. Therefore, the auxetic PCL nanofiber membranes may serve as a potent material in various biomedical applications, in particular, tissue engineering where scaffolds with mechanical cues play a major role. We demonstrate benzophenone (BP) conjugation via amine-reactive esters onto oxidized cellulosic fibers that were used as precursors, after microfluidization, of photoactive cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). From these fibrils, cellulose I filaments were synthesized by hydrogel spinning in an antisolvent followed by fast biradical UV cross-linking. As a result, the wet BP-CNF filaments retained extensively the original dry strength (a remarkable 80% retention). Thus, the principal limitation of these emerging materials was overcome (the wet tensile strength is typically -2), endowing an excellent sensitivity toward Hb targets (1.7 ± 0.12 mg m -2) and negligible nonspecific binding. Thus, the anti-Hb biointerface was deployed on filaments that captured Hb efficiently from aqueous matrices (confocal laser microscopy of FITC-labeled antibodies). Significantly, the anti-Hb biointerface was suitable for regeneration, while its sensitivity and selectivity in affinity binding can be tailored by application of blocking copolymers. The developed bifunctional filaments based on nanocellulose offer great promise in detection and affinity binding built upon 1D systems, which can be engineered into other structures for rational use of material and space.

In this study, preparation and application of novel biocomposite materials that were produced by encapsulation of bacterial cells within electrospun nanofibrous webs are described. A commercial strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa which has methylene blue (MB) dye remediation capability was selected for encapsulation, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) were selected as the polymer matrices for the electrospinning of bacteria encapsulated nanofibrous webs. Encapsulation of bacterial cells was monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence microscopy, and the viability of encapsulated bacteria was checked by live/dead staining and viable cell counting assay. Both bacteria/PVA and bacteria/PEO webs have shown a great potential for remediation of MB, yet bacteria/PEO web has shown higher removal performances than bacteria/PVA web, which was probably due to the differences in the initial viable bacterial cells for those two samples. The bacteria encapsulated electrospun nanofibrous webs were stored at 4 degrees C for three months and they were found as potentially storable for keeping encapsulated bacterial cells alive. Overall, the results suggest that electrospun nanofibrous webs are suitable platforms for preservation of living bacterial cells and they can be used directly as a starting inoculum for bioremediation of water systems. The electrospinning of gelatin with tunable fiber morphology from round to flat/ribbon was shown, and the detailed studies were conducted to correlate the fiber morphology with electrospinning process parameters and gelatin concentration in electrospinning solution. Particularly, variations in the applied voltage and the concentration of gelatin led to the transition of fiber shape from round to flat/ribbon. The formation of flat-shaped fibers was attributed to rapid evaporation of the solvent (formic acid) from the fiber matrix with increasing the applied voltage and gelatin concentration. On the other hand, round fibers were due to the steady evaporation of formic acid throughout the cross-section of fibers. WAXS analysis revealed that the loss of triple-helical crystalline structure in gelatin after the electrospinning process. The gelatin fibers were cross-linked through treatment with toluene 2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) in a mixed solution of acetone and pyridine, and XPS confirmed the cross-linking of the fibers over an increased carbon content on the elemental composition of the fiber surface due to the incorporated TDI moieties. Overall, this study focuses on morphological tuning of gelatin electrospun fibers towards a flat/ribbon-like structure by variation of electrospinning parameters and polymer concentration, and thus, the proposed concept can be adapted towards flattened/ribbon-like fibers of other protein-based systems by electrospinning. WOS: 000418223100009 In this study, the Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIM-1) was systematically hydrolyzed in the presence of sodium hydroxide by varying the concentration of base, washing procedure and the time of the reaction. The chemical structure analyses confirmed that PIM-1 could be hydrolyzed by 65% up to 99% conversion depending on the synthesis procedure. The hydrolyzed PIM-1 samples have shown improved solubility which facilitates the fabrication of hydrolyzed PIM-1 ultrafine fibers by electrospinning technique. Extensive optimization studies were performed for the electrospinning of uniform and bead-free fibers from hydrolyzed PIM-1 with different degree of hydrolysis (65%, 86%, 94% and 99%). The electrospun hydrolysed PIM-1 fibrous samples have average fiber diameters (AFD) ranging from 0.58 +/- 0.15 mu m to 1.21 +/- 0.15 mu m, depending on the polymer concentration and applied electrospinning parameters. After electrospinning, self-standing hydrolyzed PIM-1 fibrous membranes were obtained which is useful as a filtering material for the adsorption of organic dyes from wastewater. Here, the capability of hydrolyzed PIM-1 electrospun fibrous membranes for the removal of dyes from aqueous solutions was investigated by using a batch adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of fully hydrolyzed PIM-1 fibers was found 157 +/- 16 mg g(-1) for Methylene Blue and 4 mg g(-1) for Congo red when the adsorption was conducted by 20 mg L-1 dye solution without using any dilution. Moreover, maximum dye adsorption was also studied by using concentrated Methylene Blue solutions showing up to 272 mg g(-1) adsorption maximum. In addition, the self-standing fibrous hydrolyzed PIM-1 membrane was employed to separate Methylene Blue from an aqueous system by filtration without the necessity of additional driving force. International audience; Glasses in the BaO-SnO-P2O5-B2O3 system were prepared and evaluated in order to formulate preform glasses suitable for the fabrication of fiber cores with a very low photoelastic constant. A first glass system (I: xBaO-(60-x)SnO-40P2O5) was designed with a constant P2O5 content and various BaO contents (0-40 mol. %). Introduction of 3 mol. % of B2O3 to enhance the glass stability leads to the second glass system (II: x′BaO-(57-x′)SnO-40P2O5-3B2O3) with 33-38 mol. % BaO. The structure of both systems was investigated by 1D/2D magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, Raman, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic techniques. 31P NMR showed the presence of Q2 and Q1 units in the first system and correlation 11B/31P NMR indicated that boron enters into the network as B(OP)4 structural units. The photoelastic constant was determined and the stability of the best formulations as well as their refractive index dispersion was established. The drawing temperature and isothermal heating time (without crystal precipitation) parameters were also accurately measured by using experimental time-temperature-transition. Considering that the refractive indices of the core and the cladding materials must match, detailed core and cladding compositions for a fiber enabling single-mode waveguide transmission were proposed.

The volatility and limited water solubility of linalool is a critical issue to be solved. Here, we demonstrated the electrospinning of polymer-free nanofibrous webs of cyclodextrin/linalool-inclusion complex (CD/linalool-IC-NFs). Three types of modified cyclodextrin (HP beta CD, M beta CD, and HP gamma CD) were used to electrospin CD/linalool-IC-NFs. Free-standing CD/linalool-IC-NFs facilitate maximum loading of linalool up to 12% (w/w). A significant amount of linalool (45-89%) was preserved in CD/linalool-IC-NFs, due to enhancement in the thermal stability of linalool by cyclodextrin inclusion complexation. Remarkably, CD/linalool-IC-NFs have shown fast-dissolving characteristics in which these nanofibrous webs dissolved in water within two seconds. Furthermore, linalool release from CD/linalool-IC-NFs inhibited growth of model Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria to a great extent. Briefly, characteristics of liquid linalool have been preserved in a solid nanofiber form and designed CD/linalool-IC-NFs confer high loading capacity, enhanced shelf life and strong antibacterial activity of linalool. To be able to produce highly oriented and strong fibers from polymer solutions, a high elongational rate during the fiber-forming process is necessary. In the air-gap spinning process, a high elongational rate is realized by employing a high draw ratio, the ratio between take-up and extrusion velocity. Air-gap spinning of lignin–cellulose ionic-liquid solutions renders fibers that are promising to use as carbon fiber precursors. To further improve their mechanical properties, the polymer orientation should be maximized. However, achieving high draw ratios is limited by spinning instabilities that occur at high elongational rates. The aim of this experimental study is to understand the link between solution properties and the critical draw ratio during air-gap spinning. A maximum critical draw ratio with respect to temperature is found. Two mechanisms that limit the critical draw ratio are proposed, cohesive breach and draw resonance, the latter identified from high-speed videos. The two mechanisms clearly correlate with different temperature regions. The results from this work are not only of value for future work within the studied system but also for the design of air-gap spinning processes in general.

We have proposed a new strategy for preparing free-standing nanofibrous webs from an inclusion complex (IC) of a well-known flavor/fragrance compound (limonene) with three modified cyclodextrins (HP beta CD, M beta CD, and HP gamma CD) via electrospinning (CD/limonene-IC-NFs) without using a polymeric matrix. The experimental and computational modeling studies proved that the stoichiometry of the complexes was 1:1 for CD/limonene systems. M beta CD/limonene-IC-NF released much more limonene at 37, 50, and 75 degrees C than HP beta CD/limonene-IC-NF and HP gamma CD/limonene-IC-NF because of the greater amount of preserved limonene. Moreover, M beta CD/limonene-IC-NF has released only 25% (w/w) of its limonene, whereas HP beta CD/limonene-IC-NF and HP gamma CD/limonene-IC-NF released 51 and 88% (w/w) of their limonene in 100 days, respectively. CD/limonene-IC-NFs exhibited high antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The water solubility of limonene increased significantly and CD/limonene-IC-NFs were dissolved in water in a few seconds. In brief, CD/limonene-IC-NFs with fast dissolving character enhanced the thermal stability and prolonged the shelf life along with antibacterial properties could be quite applicable in food and oral care applications.

In this study, a protein-based catalytic membrane was produced by electrospinning. Membrane activity was characterised in terms of response current for various glucose concentrations. We focused on the preparation of a scaffold by converting a globular protein to other structural forms using catastrophic solvents. A scaffolding protein, bovine serum albumin, and an enzyme, glucose oxidase (GOD), were selected as a model natural carrier matrix and a biologically active agent, respectively. Beta-mercaptoethanol (beta-ME) was used to convert the globular protein to an amyloid-like form. A structural stabilising agent, 2,2,2-triflouroethanol (TFE), was used to maintain the final alpha-helical structure of the amyloid-like protein. The TFE:PBS (phosphate-buffered saline) ratio and various electrospinning parameters were analysed to minimise activity loss. Using this approach, we applied electrospinning to an active enzyme to obtain biocatalytic nanofibrous membranes. After optimising the protein electrospinning process, the activities of the protein nanofibrous membranes were monitored. GOD remained active in the new membrane structure. The highest enzyme activity was observed for the membranes prepared with a 1.5:1 (v:v) TFE:PBS solvent ratio. In that particular case, the immobilized enzyme created a current of 0.7 mu A and the apparent activity was 2547 +/- 132 U/m(2). (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Free-standing nanofibrous webs of cyclodextrin/geraniol-inclusion complex (CD/geraniol-IC-NF) showing antibacterial, antioxidant activity and slow release of geraniol were developed as flavour/fragrance releasing materials via electrospinning. The electrospinning of CD/geraniol-IC-NFs with uniform and bead-free morphology was achieved without using a polymer matrix. Three types of CDs modified with hydroxypropyl and methyl groups (HP beta CD, M beta CD, and HP gamma CD) were used to obtain CD/geraniol-IC-NFs. The polymer-free CD/geraniol-IC-NFs allow us to attain much higher geraniol loading (similar to 11%, w/w) when compared to electrospun polymeric nanofibers containing CD/geraniol-IC (similar to 5%, w/w). Geraniol has a volatile nature, yet, a significant amount of geraniol (similar to 60-90%) was preserved in CD/geraniol-IC-NFs due to the complexation, whereas evaporation of geraniol was unavoidable for polymeric nanofibers incorporating geraniol without cyclodextrin. Short-term (3 h) temperature dependent release (37 degrees C, 50 degrees C, and 75 degrees C) and long-term open air (50 days, at RT) release tests revealed that M beta CD/geraniol-IC-NF released less geraniol compared to HP beta CD/geraniol-IC-NF and HP gamma CD/geraniol-IC-NF, indicating that much stronger inclusion complexation was formed between M beta CD and geraniol. The release of geraniol from CD/geraniol-IC-NFs prevented the colonization of Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria to a great extent, as observed in the antibacterial activity results. It was observed that CD/geraniol-IC-NFs had higher antioxidant activity compared to pure geraniol due to the solubility increase. In brief, the results reported here may open a new door to enhance the performance of essential oils and flavour/fragrances, to preserve volatile compounds from evaporation and to better understand the potential of CD/IC-NFs as carrier systems for guest compounds in the food, cosmetic and household cleaning industries.

The preparation of superparamagnetic thin fibers by electrospinning dispersions of nanosized magnetite (Fe3O4, SPIO/USPIO) in a PMMA/PEO polymer solution is reported. The saturation magnetization and coercivity were not affected by the concentration (0, 1, 10, 20 wt%) or fiber orientation, showing hysteresis loops with high magnetization (64 A m2 kg-1 @ 500 kA m-1) and record low coercivity (20 A m-1). AC susceptibility measurements vs. temperature at frequencies from 60 to 2 kHz confirmed superparamagnetism. The mechanical properties were only slightly dependent on the particle concentration because the nanoparticles were separately encapsulated by the polymer. A uniform fibre fracture cross section was found at all the investigated particle contents, which suggests a strong interaction at the polymer/particle interface. A theoretical value of the magnetic low field susceptibility was calculated from the Langevin function and compared with measured values. The results show a distinct but concentration-independent anisotropy, favoring magnetization along the fiber orientation with no sign of exchange interaction, explained by complete nanoparticle separation. Superparamagnetism cannot be inferred from particle size alone, so a relevant interpretation and criterion for superparamagnetism is presented, in accordance with Neel's original definition. From the measurements, it can be concluded that magnetic characterization can be used to elucidate the material morphology beyond the resolution of available microscopy techniques (TEM and SEM). © 2016 The Royal Society of Chemistry. The design and production of drug-loaded nanofiber based materials produced by electrospinning is of interest for use in innovative drug delivery systems. In the present study, ultra-fine fiber mats of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) containing naproxen (NAP) were successfully prepared by electrospinning from 8 and 10% (w/w) TPU solutions. The amount of NAP in the solutions was 10 and 20% based on the weight of TPU. The collection period of the drug-loaded electrospun TPU fibers was 5, 10 and 20 h, and they were characterized by FTIR, DSC and TGA analysis. The morphology of the NAP-loaded electrospun TPU fiber mats was smooth, and the average diameters of these fibers varied between 523.66 and 723.50 nm. The release characteristics of these fiber mats were determined by the total immersion method in the phosphate buffer solution at 37°C. It was observed that the collection period in terms of the mat thickness played a major role in the release rate of NAP from the electrospun TPU mats. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we reported the molecular entrapment performance of hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP beta CD) and hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin (HP gamma CD) electrospun nanofibers (NF) for two common volatile organic compounds (VOCs); aniline and benzene. The encapsulation efficiency of CD samples were investigated depending on the various factors such as; CD form (NF and powder), electrospinning solvent (DMF and water), CD (HP beta CD and HP gamma CD) and VOCs (aniline and benzene) types. BET analysis indicated that, electrospun CD NF have higher surface area compared to their powder form. In addition DMA measurement provided information about the mechanical properties of CD NF. The encapsulation capability of CD NF and CD powder was investigated by H-1-NMR and HPLC techniques. The observed results suggested that, CD NF can entrap higher amount of VOCs from surroundings compared to their powder forms. Besides, molecular entrapment efficiency of CD NF also depends on CD, solvent and VOCs types. The inclusion complexation between CD and VOCs was determined by using TGA technique, from the higher decomposition temperature of VOCs. Finally, our results were fortified by the modeling studies which indicated the complexation efficiency variations between CD and VOC types. Here, the inclusion complexation ability of CD molecules was combined with very high surface area and versatile features of CD NF. So these findings revealed that, efectrospun CD NF can serve as useful filtering material for air filtration purposes due to their molecular entrapment capability of VOCs. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
