Abstract Pleiotropy is frequently detected in agronomic traits of wheat (Triticum aestivum). A locus on chromosome 4B, QTn/Ptn/Sl/Sns/Al/Tgw/Gl/Gw.caas-4B, proved to show pleiotropic effects on tiller, spike, and grain traits using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population of Qingxinmai × 041133. The allele from Qingxinmai increased tiller numbers, and the allele from line 041133 produced better performances of spike traits and grain traits. Another 52 QTL for the eight traits investigated were detected on 18 chromosomes, except for chromosomes 5D, 6D, and 7B. Several genes in the genomic interval of the locus on chromosome 4B were differentially expressed in crown and inflorescence samples between Qingxinmai and line 041133. The development of the KASP marker specific for the locus on chromosome 4B is useful for molecular marker-assisted selection in wheat breeding.

Spike architecture influences both grain weight and grain number per spike, which are the two major components of grain yield in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). However, the complex wheat genome and the influence of various environmental factors pose challenges in mapping the causal genes that affect spike traits. Here, we systematically identified genes involved in spike trait formation by integrating information on genomic variation and gene regulatory networks controlling young spike development in wheat. We identified 170 loci that are responsible for variations in spike length, spikelet number per spike, and grain number per spike through genome-wide association study and meta-QTL analyses. We constructed gene regulatory networks for young inflorescences at the double ridge stage and the floret primordium stage, in which the spikelet meristem and the floret meristem are predominant, respectively, by integrating transcriptome, histone modification, chromatin accessibility, eQTL, and protein–protein interactome data. From these networks, we identified 169 hub genes located in 76 of the 170 QTL regions whose polymorphisms are significantly associated with variation in spike traits. The functions of TaZF-B1, VRT-B2, and TaSPL15-A/D in establishment of wheat spike architecture were verified. This study provides valuable molecular resources for understanding spike traits and demonstrates that combining genetic analysis and developmental regulatory networks is a robust approach for dissection of complex traits.

Salt-affected soils constrain wheat production in many countries. It is estimated that more than 831 million hectares (Mha) are salt affected globally, with 10 Mha of cultivated land lost annually. Salinity adversely affects wheat grain yield and grain quality traits. Wheat genotypes show wide variation for salinity stress tolerance. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the performance and stability of spike traits in 14 winter wheat varieties with different origin, in order to identify the varieties that can exploit the growing conditions of saline soils. The wheat material was tested in nine environments as a combination of three years and three fertilization treatments (urea, calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate), using a split-plot design with three replications. At maturity plant height, spike length, grains number per spike, and spike yield were determined. The significant effect of genotype × environment interaction on the phenotypic expression of different traits indicates differential response of the genotypes across the testing environments, thus offering the possibility of identifying some genotypes of interest. The Romanian varieties ‘Alex’ and ‘Glosa’ present the highest productivity of spike associated with an average stability, being specifically adapted to favourable rainfall conditions, achieving above-average yields in less favourable conditions. The varieties ‘Cerere’, ‘Genesi’, ‘Alex’ and ‘Glosa’ can be selected for crossing and included in wheat breeding programs for the development of stable cultivars adapted to saline soils.

Spikelet abortion is a phenomenon where apical spikelet primordia on an immature spike abort. Regardless of the row-type, both apical and basal spikelet abortion occurs, and their extent decides the number of grain-bearing spikelets retained on the spike--thus, affecting the yield potential of barley. Reducing spikelet abortion, therefore, represents an opportunity to increase barley yields. Here, we investigated the variation for apical spikelet abortion along with 16 major spike, shoot, and grain traits in a panel of 417 six-rowed spring barleys. Our analyses showed a significantly large genotypic variation resulting in high heritability estimates for all the traits. Spikelet abortion (SA) varies from 13 to 51% depending on the genotype and its geographical origin. Among the seven spike traits, SA was negatively correlated with final spikelet number, spike length and density, while positively with awn length. This positive correlation suggests a plausible role of the rapidly growing awns during the spikelet abortion process, especially after Waddington stage 5. In addition, SA also showed a moderate positive correlation with grain length, grain area and thousand-grain weight. Our hierarchical clustering revealed distinct genetic underpinning of grain traits from the spike and shoot traits. Trait associations showed a geographical bias whereby European accessions displayed higher SA and grain and shoot trait values, whereas the trend was opposite for the Asian accessions. To study the observed phenotypic variation of SA explained by 16 other individual traits, we applied linear, quadratic, and generalized additive regression models (GAM). Our analyses of SA revealed that the GAM generally performed superior in comparison to the other models. The genetic interactions among traits suggest novel breeding targets and easy-tophenotype "proxy-traits" for high throughput on-field selection for grain yield, especially in early generations of barley breeding programs. The barley old cultivars can be used as a source of genetic diversity to breed new varieties well adapted to different environmental conditions. In this study, 431 European barley accessions were evaluated phenotypically across 2 years under field conditions and genotypically using DArTseq to gain insight into the genetic architecture of phenology, biomass, yield components, and seed yield traits. Accessions were grouped into sub-collections by cultivation period (group A—cultivated prior to 1985, B—cultivated after 1985, and C—Polish landraces), and by European country of origin or European region, to compare their phenological and agronomic value for 16 traits such as: days to heading (DH), days to milk-waxy stage (DMW), days to maturity (DM), days to harvest (DPH), plant height (PH), lodging (LT), row number (RN), spike density (SD), spike length (SL), grain per spike (NGS), glume colour (GC1), grain awn type (GAT), grain covering (GT), grain pericarp colour (GPC), and 1000—grain weight (TGW), and to indicate marker-trait associations (MTAs) with these traits. Based on the results, phenotypic plants per se under field conditions and spikes, or seeds under laboratory conditions it was possible to cluster the collection. DH negatively correlated with PH and important yield components, such TGW. Overall, the genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis identified 143 MTAs associated with these traits. Twenty-three MTAs were associated with plant phenological stages: 5 MTAs with DH, 6 MTAs with DMW, 5 MTAs with DM, and 9 MTAs with DPH. Eighty-nine SMTAs for plant phenotypic traits were identified: 1 for LT and 88 MTAs for PH. Thirty-one markers were identified for agronomic yield traits: 16 MTAs for SD, 11 MTAs for NGS, and 4 for TGW. One association result, 7241263-17 on chromosome 2H, corresponded to the genomic region mapped for DM, DPH, and SD. Marker 3258999-37-C/T on chromosome 2H, significant for NGS, was closely located to results 3263044-31-G/T for SD and 3263989-64-A/C for DMW. On chromosome 6H, closely located were markers significant for SD (3255466-35-C/G) and for NGS (3259102-57-C/A). Moreover, on chromosome 6H, closely located were markers significant for SD (3918801-14-G/A), for NGS (3666407-49-T/G), and for DMW (3663162-62-A/C). The well-characterized barley collection and identified MTAs markers will be used to create a Polish Genebank platform and will serve as a valuable resource for precise breeding programs. In the Lincoln environment, 44 markers were found to be significantly associated with spike-related traits (SW, SL, TSNS, TKNS, and TKW), while 41 were detected in North Platte. Due to the strong significant genotype x environment, no common SNP markers were found between the two locations. Gene annotation of the significant markers revealed candidate genes encoded for important proteins that are associated directly or indirectly with yield traits. The anther is a crucial organ for the development of the spike in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Long anthers contain large amounts of pollen grains; thus, they are favourable for cross-pollination and increase resilience against adverse environmental conditions. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of anther length in 305 elite wheat lines evaluated during 2013-2015 in two locations and two growing seasons. The mapping panel was genotyped using a high-density Illumina iSelect 90K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. The GWAS used 18763 SNPs and identified 17 markers associated with anther length in wheat. The loci were mainly distributed across the chromosomes 3A, 3B and 7B. Further studies are required to determine if these are candidate genomic regions of anther length. In addition, anther length had high heritability, and positive correlations between anther length and grain weight per spike were observed.

Five two-row winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars divergent in spike traits were crossed in all possible combinations excluding reciprocals to produce 10 F1 and F2 hybrids for analysis of combining abilities. The analysis of variance of combining abilities showed significant differences for GCA and SCA in F1 hybrids and F2 generation, suggesting additive and non-additive gene action. The GCA/SCA ratio in F1 and F2 indicated the prevalence of the additive component of genetic variance for spike length, grain weight per spike and spike harvest index. By contrast, the SCA variance for grain weight per spike was higher than the GCA variance, indicating the dominance of non-additive gene action. Good GCAs were found in parents having high values for spike length (Djerdap, NS-293), grain number per spike (Vada, Jagodinac), grain weight per spike (Vada, NS-293) and spike harvest index (Djerdap, Jagodinac). None of the parents had good GCA for all traits, suggesting a potential increase in combining abilities for spike traits. The best SCA were obtained mostly from crosses between parents having high x low, high x high or average x low GCA values. Parents having high GCA values may be used to produce improved lines in hybridisation programmes. Combinations with high SCA values may yield good segregating lines in further selection programmes.

Aim. Search for morphological traits that are essential for adaptive potential of the species and variable in different environments is an important part of microevolutional studies, as well as intraspecific and introgressive hybridization. Methods. Measuring and visual assessment of spike morphology. Results. Plants from five populations of Thinopyrum intermedium grown in different microgeografic conditions have been assessed for qualitative (spike color, spike hairiness, glume characteristics) and quantitative (flower number, spikelet number, spike length, spikelet length, distance between spikelets) spike morphology traits. Their associative variability for two years and its role in formation of morphotypes in populations have been investigated. The difference of average values of spike quantitative traits indicates the impact of microgeografic conditions and climate on morphotype formation. Associated manifestations of awns and shape of glume arm, arm shape and keel shape, some pairs of quantitative and qualitative traits either have been registered in both years of study or were characteristic for some particular year, and could have played role in plants' adaptation to abiotic conditions. Conclusions. In populations of Thinopyrum intermedium grown in different conditions, dynamic polymorphisms for qualitative and quantitative traits are important for plants' adaptability. Differences in average values of spike quantitative traits have been determined among all populations and years, which indicates the influence of microgeografic conditions and climate on these traits. Wheat yield is the complex trait, depending from genetic and environmental factors, level of applied technology and their interaction. Different wheat cultivars, from BC-Institute-Croatia, were evaluated for spike traits and grain yield. Field trials were conducted during the growing seasons 2010/11 and 2011/12, at the Plant Testing units of Seed company "Semenarna Kosov?" shpk, Prishtina, in Locality-Livadhi, located in geographical position: N42°05' 54", E 21° 06'36", and 581 M.A.S.L. The experimental design was complete random block with three replications (RCBD), according to combinations: (Years, Y-2 x Cultivars, C-13 x Replication, R-3 x Parameters, P-4) = 312 results. For data analysis were used ANOVA, and Multiple Comparisons with the Best, Fisher Method and Pearson correlation coefficient, according to the program MINITAB -16©. The aim of the research was to evaluate spike traits and grain yield for different wheat cultivars, from BC-Institute-Croatia. With this research was possible to determine the most promising wheat cultivars suitable to Kosova agricultural conditions. Two-year investigation, shown an average values for different parameters: Spike length (SLµ=7.76 cm spike-1), Grain number per spike (GNSµ= 40.75), Spike weight (SWµ= 1.90 g spike-1) and Grain yield per square meters (GYµ= 574.55 g m2). Abstract Grain yield in wheat is dependent on photosynthate production and allocation. Light intensity is one of the main factors affecting photosynthate production and allocation, and grain yield. This study was conducted to determine whether cultivars varying in grain number per spike and grain weight respond differently to pre-anthesis shading (PRE) and post-anthesis shading (POST), and to characterize the responses in production and allocation of photosynthate, yield and yield components, and spike traits. Both PRE and POST caused a decrease in both dry matter (DM) accumulation and allocation to grain. Cultivar Lumai 22, which has a large spike and large grains, was more sensitive to either PRE or POST. PRE reduced photosynthate production and partitioning to the spike in Lumai 22 at anthesis. In contrast, PRE had little influence on these parameters in the small-spike, small-grain cultivar Yannong 15. POST reduced the partitioning to the grain, especially in Lumai 22, for which marked reductions in biomass and grain yield were found for both the PRE and POST treatments. Changes in yield components attributable to shading varied with cultivars. The number of spikes m[sup -2] was not affected by either PRE or POST. Lumai 22 was more seriously affected by shading than Yannong 15 in terms of grain number per spike and weight per grain. The decreases in grain number or weight per spikelet in both the PRE and POST treatments took place mainly in the upper and basal spikelets, especially in Lumai 22. We concluded that the adaptability of the small-spike, small-grain cultivar Yannong 15 to either PRE or POST was much greater than that of the large-spike, large-grain cultivar Lumai 22 in terms of many characteristics closely related to grain yield. Hence, we suggest that, in areas where low light intensity often occurs, the small-spike, small-grain cultivar would be more likely to produce high, stable grain yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
