Understanding the interactions between light and matter is essential to develop new nanoscale opto-electronic devices. These interactions are often governed by exciton physics that is still not well understood at the scale of these quasi-particles. High spatial resolution measurements of the light absorption and emission is therefore crucial for understanding the exciton physics at the nanoscale, which is particularly challenging due to the optical diffraction fundamental limit. Many purely optical techniques have been developed in the past decades to overcome this limit, and are called super-resolution microscopy (SRM). They allow for the sub-diffraction optical measurements of various specimens, including nano-objects. There are two main categories of SRM: the near-field and the far-field techniques. The near-field techniques often rely on the proximity of a tip on the sample, which highly modifies its dielectric environment, and the far-field techniques are commonly based on specific dyes or light-emitting centers, which may prevent the study of new materials. In this thesis, I used a different far-field approach that enables resolutions far below the diffraction limit and non-selective excitation of samples: cathodoluminescence (CL) with fast electrons in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). I mainly studied two sorts of nano-objects: nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in nanodiamonds, excited both by the fast electron beam and various lasers, to understand the defects photophysics. The other objects studied were transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) monolayers encapsulated in h-BN, using combined CL (emission), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS, absorption) and μ-diffraction (strain mapping). The combination of these techniques in the electron microscope enabled the nanoscale characterization of exciton emission in TMD monolayers (WS₂) encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The low screening in these semiconducting monolayers allows for several types of excitons to be stable at room temperature, including charged-excitons, called trions (negative trion, X⁻, and positive trion, X⁺). The CL emission variations of the excitons and trions was studied using nanoscale chemical environment characterization in core-loss EELS (in the hundreds of eV range), and strain mapping with µ-diffraction. Moreover, the combination of CL emission and absorption in low-loss EELS (here, in the few eV range) of the same quasiparticle, here the A exciton, at the nanoscale, gives information about the origin of their variations. The study of NV centers photophysics was performed using two techniques, the CL (light emission with electron excitation) and the photoluminescence (PL, light emission with photon excitation). The laser excitation was implemented to the STEM microscope in free space, without optical fibers, to perform PL and CL in the same setup. Indeed, some specimen are fragile and get damaged upon electron irradiation, or do not emit light in CL. For these reasons, the possibility of performing PL experiments inside the electron microscope, to correlate luminescence and structure, is attractive. The illumination by laser beams led to sample heating which can be used for in-situ cleaning of sample. The heating of the NV centers has further been investigated using temperature-controlled CL experiments, with sample heating stages in the STEM microscope., La compréhension de l’interaction lumière-matière est essentielle pour développer de nouveaux composants opto-électroniques. Ce type d’interaction est souvent gouverné par la physique des excitons, qui n’est pas entièrement comprise à l’échelle de ces quasi-particules. De ce fait, des mesures à haute résolution spatiale de la lumière absorbée et émise est cruciale pour la compréhension de la physique des excitons à l’échelle nanométrique, ce qui est un challenge particulier du fait de la limite fondamentale de la diffraction en optique. Des techniques purement optiques ont été développées ces dernières décennies pour surpasser cette limite, et sont appelées microscopie à super-résolution (SRM). Elles permettent la mesure optique de différents échantillons, en particulier de nano-objets, en dessous de la limite de la diffraction. Il y a deux catégories de SRM : les techniques de champ proche et les techniques de champ lointain. Les techniques de champ proche comprennent souvent une pointe située à proximité de l’échantillon, ce qui modifie grandement l’environnement diélectrique de celui-ci, et les techniques de champ lointain sont généralement basées sur des teintures ou des centres colorés particuliers, ce qui peut limiter l’utilisation de celles-ci pour l’étude de nouveaux matériaux. Durant ma thèse, j’ai utilisé une approche différente de mesure optique en champ lointain, qui permet d’accéder à des résolutions spatiales bien en dessous de la limite de la diffraction. Cette technique, la cathodoluminescence (CL) est non-sélective, et est mesurée avec des électrons rapides dans un microscope électronique à balayage en transmission (STEM). J’ai principalement étudié deux sortes de nano-objets: les centres azote-lacune (NV) dans des nanodiamants, que j’ai illuminé avec des lasers et des faisceaux électroniques, et des monocouches de métaux de transition dichalcogénures (TMD) encapsulées dans du nitrure de bore hexagonal (h-BN). J’ai étudié les monocouches en combinant la cathodoluminescence (émission), la spectroscopie de perte d’énergie des électrons (EELS, absorption) et la µ-diffraction (cartographie de déformation). La combinaison de ces techniques dans un microscope électronique permet de caractériser les excitons des TMD encapsulés (ici WS₂) à l’échelle nanométrique. Le faible écrantage des charges dans la monocouche semiconductrice permet à différents types d’excitons d’être stables à température ambiante, en particulier, les excitons chargés, appelés trions (négatif, X⁻, et positif, X⁺) sont visibles en émission. Les variations de la CL des excitons et des trions ont été étudiées à l’aide de la cartographie d’éléments chimiques en core-loss EELS (à l’échelle de la centaine d’eV), et les cartes de déformations avec la µ-diffraction, à l’échelle nanométrique. De plus, la combinaison entre l’émission en CL et l’absorption à petite échelle d’énergie en EELS de la même quasi-particule (ici l’exciton A du TMD) à l’échelle nanométrique, donne des informations sur l’origine de ses variations. L’étude de la photophyique des centres NV a été faite avec deux techniques : la CL (émission à partir d’excitation par des électrons) et la photoluminescence (PL, émission à partir d’excitation par des photons). L’excitation laser a été ajoutée au STEM de façon à pouvoir effectuer la CL et la PL dans la même expérience. En effet, certains échantillons sont fragiles, ou n’émettent pas de CL. De ce fait, la possibilité de faire la PL dans le STEM, pour corréler la mesure de structure et celle de la luminescence est attractive. L’illumination par des faisceaux lasers chauffe l’échantillon localement, ce qui peut être utilisé pour nettoyer celui-ci in-situ. L’échauffement de l’échantillon a été étudié plus en détails par des mesures de CL en température, avec des porte-échantillon chauffant dans le STEM.

The use of synchrotron radiation in the so-called tender X-ray domain, which ranges from around 2 keV to 12 keV, enables the core-shell excitation/ionization of chemical systems. Since these core-excited/ionized states are quite unstable, the system decays. Thus, such states own ultrashort lifetime on the time scales of femtoseconds. The relaxation pathways for the decay to a more stable state can occur via the ejection of an electron or emission of a photon. In this thesis, we studied processes resulting from the interaction between the X-ray radiation and matter through the employment of electron spectroscopy techniques. We experimentally observed the theoretical prediction of the relativistic nature of the photoionization of the spin- orbit doublets in Argon and Xenon. Following, we continued our studies on chemical systems in gas-phase. However, we moved to larger chemical systems: sulfur-based aromatic molecules. We explored the sensitivity of resonant Auger spectroscopy to observe conjugation effects following the relaxation of the core-excited states. Theoretical calculations provided an interpretation of the behavior observed in the resonant Auger spectra. In the last part of this work, we applied the core-hole clock spectroscopy (CHCS) to investigation of electron dynamics in two thiophene-based polymer thin films: polythiophene (PT) and poly[3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl] (P3HT) deposited on ITO substrate. Using resonant Auger electron spectroscopy, we provided an indication of from which molecular orbital the spectator electron delocalizes.; L’utilisation du rayonnement synchrotron dans le domaine des rayons X tendres, (2keV à 12keV), permet l’excitation/ionisation des systèmes chimiques en couche profonde. Étant donné que ces états sont assez instables, vont alors se relaxer par émission dun photon ou électron. La durée de vie de ces états est ultracourte (femtoseconde). Les voies de relaxation peuvent se produire via l’éjection d’un électron ou l’émission d’un photon. Dans cette thèse, nous avons étudié les processus résultant de l’interaction entre le rayonnement X et la matière grâce à l’utilisation de techniques de spectroscopie électronique. Nous avons observé expérimentalement la prédiction théorique de la nature relativiste de la photoionisation des doublets spin-orbite pour l’argon et le xénon. Cependant, nous avons opté pour des systèmes chimiques plus larges en phase gazeuse: des molécules aromatiques à base de soufre. Nous avons exploré la sensibilité de la spectroscopie Auger résonnante par mesurer les spectres Auger résonnants du soufre KL2,3L2,3 sous forme de cartes 2D pour étudier les effets de conjugaison. Les calculs théoriques ont fourni une compréhension complémentaire aux observations expérimentales. Dans la dernière partie, nous avons exploré la spectroscopie core-hole clock (CHCS) pour étudier la dynamique électronique dans deux films minces de polymère à base de thiophène: le polythiophène (PT) et le poly [3-hexylthiophène] (P3HT) déposé sur un substrat ITO. En utilisant la spectroscopie Auger résonante, nous avons fourni une indication de l’orbitale moléculaire à partir de laquelle l’électron spectateur se délocalise.

Transition metal oxides are of great interest because of the wide range of properties they exhibit. They have potentially many technological applications in the field of electronics, especially based on the development of devices for information technology requiring contacting these oxides with metals. This thesis work, mainly based on photoemission spectroscopy, is a detailed study of the Fe/SrTiO₃ interface grown at room temperature in which we focus in particular on structural and electronic properties. We show that iron has an epitaxial growth with an island morphology and that films completely cover the substrate for the deposition of few atomic monolayers. We demonstrate that the metal reacts with the substrate during the formation of the interface which results in the presence of reduced titanium at the interface. We associate this reduction of titanium with the presence of oxygen vacancies at the Fe/SrTiO₃ interface. While the expected Schottky barrier height for a Fe/SrTiO₃(001) abrupt junction is about 1 eV for electrons, we show that the presence of oxygen vacancies at the interface lowers this Schottky barrier height to about 0.05 eV. The creation of oxygen vacancies during the deposition of fractions of iron monolayer on SrTiO₃ also leads to the metallization of the semiconductor surface. This mechanism is related to the creation of positively charged donor states associated with oxygen vacancies during deposition. To determine the band profile in the substrate, we solved the one-dimensional Poisson equation in a modified approach of the density functional theory taking into account the electron accumulation layer. By comparing these calculations with our photoemission results, we find that the surface potential has spatial inhomogeneities parallel to the surface.; Les oxydes de métaux de transition sont d'un grand intérêt en raison du large éventail de propriétés qu'ils présentent. Ils ont potentiellement de nombreuses applications technologiques dans le domaine de l'électronique, reposant en partie sur le développement de dispositifs pour la technologie de l'information nécessitant de les contacter avec des métaux. Ce travail de thèse, basé principalement sur l'utilisation de la spectroscopie de photoémission, porte sur une étude détaillée de l'interface Fe/SrTiO₃ réalisée à température ambiante, dans laquelle nous nous sommes intéressés en particulier aux propriétés structurales et électroniques. Nous montrons que le fer est épitaxié, que sa croissance est en îlots et que les films couvrent entièrement le substrat pour le dépôt de quelques monocouches atomiques. Nous mettons en évidence une réaction du métal avec le substrat lors de la formation de l'interface qui se manifeste par la présence de titane réduit à l'interface. Nous associons cette réduction du titane à la présence de lacunes d'oxygène à l'interface Fe/SrTiO₃. Alors que la hauteur de barrière Schottky attendue pour une jonction abrupte Fe/SrTiO₃(001) est d'environ 1 eV pour les électrons, nous montrons que la présence des lacunes d'oxygène à l'interface abaisse la hauteur de barrière Schottky à environ 0,05 eV. La création de lacunes d'oxygène lors du dépôt de fractions de monocouche de fer sur le SrTiO₃ conduit aussi à une métallisation de la surface du semi-conducteur. Ce mécanisme est relié à la création d'états donneurs chargés positivement associés aux lacunes d'oxygène pendant le dépôt. Pour déterminer le profil de bande dans le substrat nous avons résolu l'équation de Poisson à une dimension dans une approche de la théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité modifiée, en tenant compte de la couche d'accumulation d'électrons. Confrontant ces calculs avec nos résultats de photoémission nous trouvons que le potentiel de surface présente des inhomogénéités spatiales parallèlement à la surface.

This thesis deals with thephotophysical study of donor-π-acceptorchromophores used in dye sensitized solar cells.After photo-excitation, these molecules undergointramolecular charge transfer (ICT), solvationand charge injection processes that take place inthe picosecond time domain. However, anyenergetic relaxation of the excited statedecreases the injection kinetics.Steady-state spectroscopy and time-resolvedfluorescence measurements (from the femto- tothe nanosecond) were used to solve therelaxation dynamics of these dyes in solution, onmesoporous films and in complete cells.The spectral relaxation and fluorescencequenching dynamics of the excited state couldbe characterized independently and highlight anelectronic relaxation at the excited state. Thethree dyes studied evolve towards a chargetransfer state (CT state). Such a state is in stronginteraction with its environment.To study charge injection in semiconductormesoporous oxides, a time-resolvedfluorescence set-up for the study of opaque anddiffusive systems has been implemented and isdescribed in this thesis. It provides a timeresolution of about 300 fs.The results demonstrate the existence of acompetition between the injection of chargesand the relaxation of the excited state in thecomplete cells, Ce travail de thèse porte sur l’étudephoto-physique de chromophores donneur-π-accepteur utilisés dans les cellules solaires àcolorant. Après photo-excitation, ces moléculessubissent des processus de transfert de chargeintramoléculaire (ICT), de solvatation etd’injection de charges qui se déroulent dans ledomaine temporel de la picoseconde. Or touterelaxation énergétique de l’état excité diminue lacinétique de l’injection de charges.Des mesures de spectroscopie stationnaire et defluorescence résolue en temps (de la femto- à lananoseconde) ont permis de résoudre ladynamique de relaxation de ces colorants ensolution, sur films mésoporeux et en cellulescomplètes.Les dynamiques de relaxation spectrale etd’inhibition de l’intensité de fluorescence del’état excité ont pu être caractériséesindépendamment et mettent en évidence unchangement d’état électronique à l’état excité.Les trois colorants étudiés évoluent vers un étatà transfert de charge (état CT). Un tel étatinteragit fortement avec son environnement.Afin d’étudier l’injection de charge dans lesoxydes mésoporeux semi-conducteurs, unmontage expérimental de fluorescence résolue entemps destiné à l’étude de systèmes opaques etdiffusifs a été réalisé et est décrit dans cette thèse.Ce montage possède une résolution temporelled’environ 300 fs.Les résultats mettent en évidence la présenced’une compétition entre l’injection de charges etla relaxation de l’état excité dans les cellulescomplètes.

In spite of the rapid technological progress in nitrides, the intrinsic properties of nitride alloys and the physics of III-N devices are still not well understood. In the course of my thesis work, novel experimental and theoretical approaches to tackle the study of the microscopic mechanisms governing the electronic properties of nitride semiconductors have been developed. A new experimental technique allowing to directly measure the energy distribution of conduction electrons of an operating LED is explored. This approach allows the direct observation of hot electron populations excited in the optoelectronic device under electrical operation and emitted in ultra-high vacuum. A recent theory of localization in disordered systems is applied to nitride materials and optoelectronic devices. This method allows for the first time the determination of the localization landscape induced by alloy disorder without resorting to the Schrödinger equation. Experimentally, a clear signature of alloy disorder is observed by biased photocurrent spectroscopy of InGaN quantum wells in the form of an Urbach tail for below-gap excitation and is found to be in excellent agreement with the predictions given by the novel localization theory., Malgré les rapides progrès technologiques dans les nitrures, les propriétés intrinsèques des alliages de nitrures et les processus physiques qui gouvernent la physique de ces dispositifs sont encore mal connus. Au cours de mon travail de thèse, de nouvelles approches expérimentales et théoriques ont été développées pour aborder l’étude des mécanismes microscopiques qui gouvernent les propriétés électroniques des dispositifs à base de nitrures semi-conducteurs. Une nouvelle technique expérimentale permettant de mesurer directement la distribution en énergie des électrons de conduction d’une LED en fonctionnement est explorée. Cette approche permet l’observation directe de populations d’électrons chauds excités dans le dispositif optoélectronique sous injection électrique et émis dans l’ultravide. Une théorie récente de la localisation dans les systèmes désordonnés est appliquée aux matériaux et dispositifs optoélectroniques à base de nitrures. Cette méthode permet pour la première fois la détermination du paysage de localisation induit par le désordre d’alliage sans résoudre l’équation de Schrödinger. Expérimentalement, une signature claire du désordre d’alliage est observée par des mesures de spectroscopie de photocourant dans des puits quantiques d’InGaN sous forme d’une queue d’Urbach pour des excitations d’énergie inférieure à la largeur de la bande interdite. Ceci permet de définir une énergie caractéristique du désordre qui est en excellent accord avec les prédictions fournies par la nouvelle théorie de la localisation.

The formation of the negative hydrogen ion (H-) in collisions between a positive ion and a neutral atomic or molecular target is studied experimentally at impact energies of a few keV. The doubly-differential cross sections for H- formation are measured as a function of the kinetic energy and emission angle for the collision systems OH+ + Ar and O+ + H2O à 412 eV/a.m.u. These H- ions can be emitted at high energies (keV) in hard quasi-elastic two-body collisions involving a large momentum transfer to the H center. However, H- ions are preferentially emitted at low energy (eV) due to soft many-body (>2) collisions resulting in a low momentum transfer. The formation of H- ions by electron capture follows excitation or ionization of the molecule. The molecular fragmentation dynamics is modeled to simulate the emission of H- ions. The overall good agreement between the simulation and the experiment leads to the understanding of most of the experimental observations.; La formation de l'ion négatif d'hydrogène (H-) lors de collisions entre un ion positif et une cible atomique ou moléculaire neutre est étudiée expérimentalement à des énergies d'impact de l'ordre du keV. Les sections efficaces doublement différentielles de formation des ions H- sont mesurées en fonction de leur énergie cinétique et de leur angle d'émission lors des collisions OH+ + Ar et O+ + H2O à 412 eV/u.m.a. Ces ions peuvent être émis à haute énergie (keV) lors de collisions violentes quasi-élastiques à 2 corps impliquant un fort transfert d'impulsion au centre H. Cependant, les anions H- sont préférentiellement émis à faible énergie (eV) lors de collisions douces à plusieurs corps (>2) qui résultent en un faible transfert d'impulsion. La formation des ions H- par capture électronique fait suite à l'excitation ou l'ionisation de la molécule. La dynamique de la fragmentation moléculaire est modélisée afin de simuler l'émission des ions H-. L'accord globalement satisfaisant entre la simulation et l'expérience facilite l'interprétation des observations expérimentales.

The three-dimensional (3D) structures of proteins and peptides in vivo largely determine their biological functions. In vitro these native structures and their heterogeneity reflect a subtle balance between noncovalent intramolecular interactions and those with the surrounding solvent molecules. Decoupling the intra- and intermolecular interactions and revealing the intrinsic structures of biomolecules in the gas phase is crucial for understanding protein-peptide (-protein, -membrane) binding processes and protein folding, and can assist in silico drug design. In addition to this, the spectroscopic studies of (bio)molecules in the gas phase provide crucial information that serves as a benchmark for validation of theoretical approaches, used for structural computations. In this thesis report we demonstrate the use of conformer-selective, Cold Ion Spectroscopy (CIS), combined with mass spectrometry and electrospray ionization technique, to reveal spectroscopic fingerprints of closed-shell (bio)molecular species in the gas phase. These fingerprints provide a stringent test for validating calculated structures of the molecules. Electronic and conformer-specific vibrational spectra of charged molecules, collisionally cooled in a linear radio frequency 22-pole ion trap have been measured using photofragment detection schemes that employs UV and/or IR laser light. A detailed set of spectroscopic and structural constraints, obtained using CIS method for an antibiotic peptide, gramicidin S (GS) allows an unambiguous determination of its 3D structure in the gas phase. The calculated gas-phase structure of GS differs substantially from its known structure in the condensed phase and, thus, provides complementary information for modeling biological activity of this antibiotic. At the next step we form hydrogen-bonded complexes of GS with a gradually increasing number of water molecules. Spectroscopy of such peptide-water clusters targets to bridge the gap between the gas phase and the in vitro structures. We have shown that both, UV and IR spectra of large GS-water clusters remain vibrationally resolved, if the species are cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The observed detailed spectroscopic fingerprints of the hydrated peptides provide a benchmark for their structural analysis. While CIS method was developed for biological species, here we demonstrate its successful application for structural determination of highly-reactive catalytic metalorganic species. The experimentally observed lack of a characteristic NH stretch vibration in the IR spectra of such a species allowed an unambiguous selection of its structures from several low-energy calculated candidates. The current approach for solving structures of biomolecules implies a comparison of a measured spectroscopic fingerprint with that, calculated for a candidate structure. Unfortunately, high accuracy structural computations become time consuming and challenging for large peptides. We revealed a specificity in electronic spectra of phosphorylated peptides, which coordinates with the docking position of a phosphogroup in peptides. This observation, if confirmed for a large variety of peptides, may allow a prediction of phosphorylation sites without a call for calculations. Regarding a relative simplicity of UV spectroscopy we see a potential of this approach as an orthogonal analytical method that assists mass spectrometry in some puzzling cases of peptide analysis. At the end of this work we tried to push the limits of CIS approach towards very large species and, for the first time, measured IR spectrum of a bare protein, cytochrome c, in the gas phase.

This thesis builds on the spectroscopy of NiH established in the late 1980s and early 1990s, principally by Pr. R. W. Field's group at MIT. Experimental measurements significantly extend earlier work, both in field-free and Zeeman spectroscopy. The NiH radical is obtained with a room-temperature metal-hydride discharge source (310 K). Radicals formed in the discharge are excited by a single-mode, continuous wave dye laser and can be conveniently studied either in laser excitation or in dispersed fluorescence. A magnetic circuit with permanent magnets (NdFeB) provides a static magnetic field (0.4 – 0.9 T). In the field-free regime, Fourier transform resolved fluorescence spectra have extended the range of observations up to 6000 cm-1 above v=0 of the electronic ground state, for 58NiH and 60NiH. Energies are modeled with an effective Hamiltonien matrix using the 3d9 supermultiplet formalism developed by Field's group. Zeeman measurements have focused mainly on the range of states studied by including transitions involving the Ω=3/2 excited states. Effective Landé factors have been determined for individual ro-vibrational levels of low-lying and excited states of 58NiH. The unusual J-dependence of the Landé factors obtained for low-lying states are explained by the 3d9 supermultiplet model, quantifying the extent of spin-orbit mixing present in the lower states. The transitions are of potential astrophysical interest since several transition metal hydrides have been observed in the spectra of cool stars and sunspots., Cette thèse s'appuie sur la spectroscopie de NiH établie à la fin des années 1980 et au début des années 1990, principalement par le groupe du Pr. Les énergies sont modélisées avec un Hamiltonien effectif obtenu à partir du formalisme du modèle du 3d9 supermultiplet développé par le groupe de Field. Les mesures Zeeman se sont principalement concentrées sur l'étude des états Ω=3/2. Les facteurs de Landé effectifs ont été déterminés pour chaque niveau ro-vibrationnel pour les états de basse énergie et les états excités de 58NiH. L'inhabituelle dépendance en J des facteurs de Landé obtenus pour les états de basse énergie est expliquée par le modèle du supermultiplet, quantifiant alors l'ampleur des mélanges spin-orbite présents dans les états inférieurs. Les transitions étudiées ont un intérêt astrophysique depuis que plusieurs transitions d'hydrure métallique ont été observées dans les spectres d'étoiles froides et les taches solaires.

One of the interesting discoveries of infrared astronomy is the ubiquitous presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in interstellar and circumstellar environments. These macromolecules play a key role in the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium (ISM). However, despite a lot of observational, laboratory and modelling studies, no definite identification of individual species has been possible yet. The identification process requires both an understanding of the nature of these large carbon molecules, which is driven by their formation and further evolution under the action of UV photodissociation and chemistry, and the search for specific spectroscopic fingerprints. These subjects are experimentally approached in this work,taking advantage of the PIRENEA set-up dedicated to astrochemistry. In the first part of this thesis a study of the photodissociation cascade of several medium-sized PAHs isolated in the ion trap of PIRENEA is performed. The aim of this study is to provide information on both destruction of PAHs by UV radiation and formation channels of small hydrocarbons and carbon clusters through destruction of a larger precursor. An inventory of the formed species is made and the main fragmentation patterns are identified. The second part of the thesis focuses on the visible spectroscopy of different PAH cations and dehydrogenated derivatives. Multiphoton dissociation spectroscopy is performed to measure the electronic spectra of these species. The experimental results are interpreted with the help of theoretical spectra calculated in the frame of the time-dependent density functional theory and laboratory data obtained in rare-gas matrices. The photophysics of the laser-irradiated ions is also modelled to derive, for some of the studied species, the absorption cross-sections of the measured electronic transitions. The purpose of this second study is to obtain gas-phase spectroscopic data on different ionised PAHs and derivatives, that can be useful for the pre-selection of the most promising candidates for some of the diffuse interstellar bands, a set of absorption bands observed in the ISM since almost a century but still unidentified.; Une des découvertes majeures faites par l'astronomie infrarouge est la présence de molécules polycycliques aromatiques hydrogénées (PAH) dans les milieux interstellaires et circumstellaires. One of the interesting discoveries of infrared astronomy is the ubiquitous presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in interstellar and circumstellar environments. These macromolecules play a key role in the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium (ISM). However, despite a lot of observational, laboratory and modelling studies, no definite identification of individual species has been possible yet. Ces travaux se caractérisent par une forte interaction avec des groupes d'expérimentateurs européens (Danemark, Belgique, France, Grande-Bretagne, Serbie), en particulier dans le cadre des programmes européens "RADAM" (Radiation Damage in Biomolecular Systems) et "EIPAM" (Electron Induced Processing At the Molecular Level). Ils s'articulent en trois thèmes : a) Structure et fragmentation de molécules doublement ionisées (dications) Les dications sont métastables avant que la répulsion coulombienne ne les dissocie. Dans les cas de C2H2++ et CH3Cl++, les calculs expliquent quantitativement la présence des fragments observés, en particulier la paire C+/CH2+ provenant d'une isomérisation préalable de C2H2++. b) Spectroscopie en couches de valence (UV et ionisation) Que ce soit pour des molécules d'intérêt atmosphérique (c-C4F8, c-C5F8) ou biologique (tétrahydrofurane, isoprène, limonène, acides gras), la taille du système ne permet pas l'usage des méthodes multiconfigurationnelles. Les seules alternatives sont la fonctionnelle de densité (TD-DFT) ou les techniques "Coupled Cluster". c) Spectroscopie en couches internes Du fait de la nature très excitée des états à calculer, les techniques standard ne sont pas applicables. Nous avons mis au point un protocole qui permet de calculer les spectres en couche K d'atomes légers (C, N, O) avec une excellente précision, y compris pour les états doublement excités. Cela nous a permis d'interpréter ou de ré-interpréter les spectres de molécules organiques telles que des dérivés du benzène (azobenzènes), des furanes, du cyclopropane et plus récemment des acides acétique et propynoïque. Nous envisageons d'appliquer cette méthode à des complexes d'actinides (par exemple UCl62-) au seuil 1s du chlore.

In this thesis report, we describe a novel home-built instrument designed to study the spectroscopy of biomolecular ions in the gas phase and at low temperature, and we present the first experimental results obtained on protonated aromatic amino acids. The apparatus consists in a tandem mass spectrometer equipped with a nanospray ion source and a cryocooled 22-pole ion trap. The charged species produced by the source traverse a first quadrupole mass filter and mass-selected ions are then accumulated and thermalized in the ion trap, where their vibrational temperature can be lowered to ~ 10 K. Two setups allow us to generate ultraviolet and infrared laser light to spectroscopically probe the trapped ions by photodissociation. The resulting fragment ions are finally released from the trap and mass analyzed by a second quadrupole spectrometer. Photodissociation electronic spectra have been measured for the protonated amino acids tryptophan (TrpH+) and tyrosine (TyrH+), as well as for hydrated complexes of the former. The spectrum of TyrH+ exhibits sharp, fully resolved vibronic transitions, which attests to the low temperature of the ions. In contrast, that of tryptophan shows a broad absorption band that covers several hundreds of wavenumbers. This has been attributed to lifetime broadening related to an ultrafast (< ~ 100 fs) deactivation mechanism of the TrpH+ S1(ππ*) excited state. This phenomenon is caused by a strong coupling between this ππ* state and a nearby dissociative state of πσ* character mainly localized on the charged ammonium group. Solvation of TrpH+ by only two water molecules is sufficient to significantly destabilize the σ* orbitals and reduce that coupling, which results in a longer excited-state lifetime and a fully resolved electronic spectrum. These interpretations are supported by ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Infrared-ultraviolet double resonance spectroscopic techniques have been successfully implemented to identify the different conformers of TyrH+ and doubly hydrated protonated tryptophan (TrpH+·W2) by measuring conformer-specific vibrational and electronic spectra for each of them. By comparison with the results of DFT geometry and harmonic frequency calculations, we could confidently determine the structures of the TyrH+ conformers and suggest possible assignments for those of TrpH+·W2. Two important stabilizing interactions could be inferred from these results: (i) the attraction between the charged ammonium group and the π-electron cloud of the aromatic ring; (ii) the hydrogen-bonding interaction of a donor water molecule to the acceptor indole ring of TrpH+·W2.

Chiral recognition plays a key-role in life chemistry and is thought to happen through the formation of weakly bound contact pairs. Due to their transient nature, they are difficult to study in solution. We have studied jet-cooled complexes of chiral molecules, in the gas phase at low temperature, by means of laser spectroscopy. The aim of this work is a better understanding of the molecular forces responsible for chiral recognition, at the molecular level., La reconnaissance chirale joue un rôle fondamental dans la chimie du vivant. On suppose qu'elle a lieu grâce à la formation de paires de contact transitoires et faiblement liées dont l'étude est difficile en solution. C'est pourquoi nous avons étudié ces paires faiblement liées isolées en phase gazeuse à basse température en jet supersonique, par spectroscopie laser électronique et vibrationnelle. Le but de ce travail est la compréhension au niveau microscopique des forces responsables de la reconnaissance chirale.

The photoexcitation and photoionization dynamics of sodium atoms deposited on the surface of helium nanodroplets and aromatic molecules (aniline, phenol and toluene) embedded in the interior of droplets have been investigated by a variety of spectroscopic techniques. The mean droplet sizes varied in the range of ≈ 2 000 - 20 000 atoms. For the first time, the excitation spectra of Na-doped helium droplets corresponding to Rydberg states of Na atoms have been measured from the lowest excited 3p state up to the ionization threshold. All lines in the excitation spectra are shifted and broadened with respect to atomic lines. The desorption of bare excited Na atoms and NaHen, n=1-4, exciplexes was observed upon excitation. The experiments revealed that the relative abundance of desorbed species, their internal energy states, their speed and angular distributions are specific to the state of sodium atom to which it was excited to on the droplet's surface. In the lowest excited states (3p, 4s, 3d and 4p), we observed rather regular dynamics. The photoelectron spectroscopy of products revealed the desorption of excited sodium atoms in the initially excited state and in lower lying states which were populated by radiative decay of the higher ones. The velocity distributions showed interesting characteristics: the mean kinetic energy of desorbed sodium increased linearly with excitation frequency, while angular anisotropy varied monotonically. In contrast, the recorded velocity distributions of exciplexes did not manifest systematically such regular properties. It was found that the excitation spectra and relative abundances of exciplexes depended on the mean droplet size, while the velocity distributions of desorbed species were, in general, not dependent on size. The tentative explanation of the observed features is based on the approximation that "Na-helium nanodroplet" interaction potentials can be described by a sum of Na-He pair potentials over the helium atoms constituting the nanodroplet. The shapes and shifts of the transitions to low excited states of Na obtained within this model are in a good agreement with experimental observations. The velocity distributions of desorbed Na atoms can be qualitatively interpreted by the overall interaction potentials of sodium with a helium nanodroplet where they act as counterparts in a diatomic system. In contrast, the NaHen exciplex formation on the surface of nanodroplets appears to be mainly governed by the Na-He pair potentials. The excitation to higher than 4p states of Na on the droplet's surface revealed complex situations. The experimental spectra correlated poorly to those calculated within the pair-wise interaction model. The velocity distributions of desorbed sodium and exciplexes often consisted of two components compared to one in the lower states. The photoelectron spectra disclosed the presence of species in the states that could not be populated by radiative decay of the higher ones, indicating that relaxation plays an important role during the detachment. The experiments on the photoionization of Na-doped helium droplets revealed that their ionization threshold is red-shifted with respect to a free sodium atom. The time-of-flight mass spectra showed that the directly created Na+ ion was solvated in the droplet. The indirect evidence of creating special Na-droplets in high Rydberg states, when the ionic core remains inside the cluster and the weakly bound electron orbits outside, was obtained. The shape of ionization transition and the droplet size dependence of the ionization threshold are in line with the model of a pair-wise additive interaction of the created sodium ion with helium atoms in the nanocluster. The photoionization of aromatic molecules (aniline, phenol, and toluene) in helium droplets was studied with photoelectron spectroscopy. The photoelectron spectra resemble closely those of gas phase molecules except for the droplet size dependent shift. This shift is caused by the lowering of the ionization threshold upon solvation and can be readily estimated. The individual peaks in photoelectron spectra are broadened, which is thought to partially reflect the rearrangement of helium upon ion solvation. The droplet size and kinetic energy dependences of the peak broadening towards lower energy may be attributed to the relaxation of the photoelectrons as they pass through a helium droplet.
