We report spectroscopic and photometric follow-up of a dormant black hole (BH) candidate from Gaia DR3. The system, which we call Gaia BH2, contains a $\sim 1M_{\odot}$ red giant and a dark companion with mass $M_2 = 8.9\pm 0.3\,M_{\odot}$ that is very likely a BH. The orbital period, $P_{\rm orb} = 1277$ days, is much longer than that of any previously studied BH binary. Our radial velocity (RV) follow-up over a 7-month period spans more than 90% of the orbit's dynamic range in RV and is in excellent agreement with predictions of the Gaia solution. UV imaging and high-resolution optical spectra rule out all plausible luminous companions that could explain the orbit. The star is a bright ($G=12.3$), slightly metal-poor ($\rm [Fe/H]=-0.22$) low-luminosity giant ($T_{\rm eff}=4600\,\rm K$; $R = 7.8\,R_{\odot}$; $\log\left[g/\left({\rm cm\,s^{-2}}\right)\right] = 2.6$). The binary's orbit is moderately eccentric ($e=0.52$). The giant is strongly enhanced in $\alpha-$elements, with $\rm [\alpha/Fe] = +0.26$, but the system's Galactocentric orbit is typical of the thin disk. We obtained X-ray and radio nondetections of the source near periastron, which support BH accretion models in which the net accretion rate at the horizon is much lower than the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton rate. At a distance of 1.16 kpc, Gaia BH2 is the second-nearest known BH, after Gaia BH1. Its orbit -- like that of Gaia BH1 -- seems too wide to have formed through common envelope evolution. Gaia BH1 and BH2 have orbital periods at opposite edges of the Gaia DR3 sensitivity curve, perhaps hinting at a bimodal intrinsic period distribution for wide BH binaries. Dormant BH binaries like Gaia BH1 and Gaia BH2 likely significantly outnumber their close, X-ray bright cousins, but their formation pathways remain uncertain., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

Serving as the progenitors of electromagnetic and gravitational wave transients, massive stars have received renewed interest in recent years. However, many aspects of their birth and evolution remain opaque, particularly in the context of binary interactions. The centre of our galaxy hosts a rich cohort of very massive stars, which appear to play a prominent role in the ecology of the region. In this paper we investigate the binary properties of the Arches cluster, which is thought to host a large number of very massive stars. A combination of multi-epoch near-IR spectroscopy and photometry was utilised to identify binaries. 13 from 36 cluster members meet our criteria to be classed as RV variable. Combining the spectroscopic data with archival radio and X-ray observations - to detect colliding wind systems - provides a lower limit to the binary fraction of ~43%; increasing to >50% for the O-type hypergiants and WNLha. Dynamical and evolutionary masses reveal the primaries to be uniformly massive (>50M$_{\odot}$). Where available, orbital analysis reveals a number of short period, highly eccentric binaries, which appear to be pre-interaction systems. Such systems are X-ray luminous, with 80% above an empirical bound of $(L_{\rm x}/L_{\rm bol})\sim10^{-7}$ and their orbital configurations suggest formation and evolution via a single star channel; however, we cannot exclude a binary formation channel for a subset. The Carina Nebula is one of the major massive star-forming regions in the Galaxy. Its relatively nearby distance (2.35 kpc) makes it an ideal laboratory for the study of massive star formation, structure, and evolution, both for individual stars and stellar systems. Thanks to the high-quality spectra provided by the Gaia-ESO survey and the LiLiMaRlin library, as well as Gaia EDR3 astrometry, a detailed and homogeneous spectroscopic characterization of its massive stellar content can be carried out. Aims. Our main objective is to spectroscopically characterize all massive members of the Carina Nebula in the Gaia-ESO survey footprint to provide an updated census of massive stars in the region and an updated estimate of the binary fraction of O stars. Methods. We performed accurate spectral classification using an interactive code that compares spectra with spectral libraries of OB standard stars, as well as line-based classic methods. We calculated membership using our own algorithm based on Gaia EDR3 astrometry. To check the correlation between the spectroscopic n-qualifier and the rotational velocity, we used a semi-automated tool for the line-broadening characterization of OB stars based on a combined Fourier transform and goodness-of-fit methodology. Results. The Gaia-ESO survey sample of massive OB stars in the Carina Nebula consists of 234 stars. The addition of brighter sources from the Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey and additional sources from the literature allows us to create the most complete census of massive OB stars so far in the region. It contains a total of 316 stars, with 18 of them in the background and 4 in the foreground. Of the 294 stellar systems in Car OB1, 74 are of O type, 214 are of nonsupergiant B type, and 6 are of WR or nonO supergiant (II to Ia) spectral class. We identify 20 spectroscopic binary systems with an O-star primary, of which 6 are reported for the first time, and another 18 with a B-star primary, of which 13 are new detections. The average observed double-lined binary fraction of O-type stars in the surveyed region is 0.35, which represents a lower limit. We find a good correlation between the spectroscopic n-qualifier and the projected rotational velocity of the stars. The fraction of candidate runaways among the stars with and without the n-qualifier is 4.4% and 2.4%, respectively, although nonresolved double-lined binaries could be contaminating the sample of fast rotators. © The Authors 2023., This paper is based mainly on data products from spectroscopic observations made with ESO Telescopes at the Paranal Observatory under programme ID 188.B-3002. HIP 9618 (HD 12572, TOI-1471, TIC 306263608) is a bright ($G=9.0$ mag) solar analogue. TESS photometry revealed the star to have two candidate planets with radii of $3.9 \pm 0.044$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 b) and $3.343 \pm 0.039$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 c). While the 20.77291 day period of HIP 9618 b was measured unambiguously, HIP 9618 c showed only two transits separated by a 680-day gap in the time series, leaving many possibilities for the period. To solve this issue, CHEOPS performed targeted photometry of period aliases to attempt to recover the true period of planet c, and successfully determined the true period to be 52.56349 d. High-resolution spectroscopy with HARPS-N, SOPHIE and CAFE revealed a mass of $10.0 \pm 3.1 M_\oplus$ for HIP 9618 b, which, according to our interior structure models, corresponds to a $6.8\pm1.4\%$ gas fraction. HIP 9618 c appears to have a lower mass than HIP 9618 b, with a 3-sigma upper limit of $< 18M_\oplus$. Follow-up and archival RV measurements also reveal a clear long-term trend which, when combined with imaging and astrometric information, reveal a low-mass companion ($0.08^{+0.12}_{-0.05} M_\odot$) orbiting at $26^{+19}_{-11}$ au. This detection makes HIP 9618 one of only five bright ($K50$ d, opening the door for the atmospheric characterisation of warm ($T_{\rm eq}, 19 pages, 16 figures, 9 tables. Accepted at MNRAS. We have developed a new method for spectral analysis of binaries. Our method successfully identifies SB2 candidates from high-resolution Gaia-ESO spectra. Compared to the commonly used cross-correlation function analysis, it works for binaries with rapidly rotating components. We test our method on synthetic and observational spectra of BAFG-stars in the open cluster M 11. We confirm five previously detected SB2 candidates and find 19 new ones. For three SB2 candidates we find circular orbits and obtain dynamical mass ratios., accepted in MNRAS 15.11.21

We present results from the B-type Binaries Characterisation (BBC) programme, a multi-epoch spectroscopic study of 88 early B-type binary candidates in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). From radial-velocity analysis of 29 observational epochs we confirm the binary status of 64 of our targets, comprising 50 SB1 and 14 SB2 B-type binaries. A further 20 systems (classified as SB1*) show clear signs of periodicity but with more tentative periods. Orbital solutions are presented for these 84 systems, providing the largest homogeneous sample to date of the binary properties of early B-type stars. Our derived orbital-period distribution is generally similar to those for samples of more massive (O-type) binaries in both the LMC and the Galaxy. This similarity with the properties of the more massive O-type binaries is important as early B-type stars are expected to account for the majority of core-collapse supernovae. Differences in the period distributions of the different samples start to increase above 4 d, and are also present between the earliest (B0-0.7) and later-type (B1-2.5) systems within the BBC sample, although further study is required to understand if this is an observational bias or a real physical effect. We have examined the semi-amplitude velocities and orbital periods of our sample to identify potential candidates that could hide compact companions. Comparing with probability distributions of finding black hole companions to OB-type stars from a recent theoretical study, we have found 16 binaries in the higher probability region that warrant further study., 42 pages (main body: 28 pages, supplementary material: 14 pages), 20 figures. We aim to hunt for massive binaries hosting a black hole companion (OB+BH) and establish the natal mass-ratio distribution of massive stars at the subsolar metallicity environment of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We use the shift-and-add grid disentangling technique to characterize the hidden companions in 51 SB1 O-type and evolved B-type binaries in the LMC monitored in the framework of the Tarantula Massive Binary Monitoring (TMBM). Out of the 51 SB1 systems, 43 (84%) are found to have non-degenerate stellar companions, of which 28 are confident detections, and 15 are less certain (SB1: or SB2:). Of these 43 targets, one is found to be a triple (VFTS 64), and two are found to be quadruples (VFTS 120, 702). The remaining eight targets (16%) retain an SB1 classification. Aside from the unambiguous case of VFTS 243, analysed in detailed in a separate paper, we identify two additional OB+BH candidates: VFTS 514 and VFTS 779. Additional black holes may be present in the sample but at a lower probability. Our study firmly establishes a virtually flat natal mass-ratio distribution for O-type stars at LMC metallicity, covering the entire mass-ratio range (0.05 < q < 1) and periods in the range 0 < log P < 3 [d]. The nature of the OB+BH candidates should be verified through future monitoring, but the frequency of OB+BH candidates is generally in line with recent predictions at LMC metallicity., 41 pages (14 main article + 27 appendix), accepted to A&A

The star NGC2004#115 in the LMC, originally classified as an (SB1) Be spectroscopic binary, bears some morphological resemblance to the Galactic systems LB-1 and HR 6819, both of which are proposed as either Be+black hole (BH) or Be+stripped He-star systems. Two data-sets (ESO/VLT and SALT) of multi-epoch optical spectra of NGC 2004#115, separated by baseline of $\sim$20 years, lead us conclude it is a triple system hosting an inner binary with a period of 2.92 d, eccentricity $\sim$0.0 and mass function $\sim$0.07 $M_\odot$. The inner binary harbours a B-type star (the primary) with projected rotational velocity of 10km/s, and luminosity $\log L/L_\odot$=3.87, contributing $\sim$60% of the V-band light to the system. The secondary is not detected, while the tertiary, which contributes 40% of the light, is tentatively identified as a less luminous B-type star with high projected rotational velocity. No ellipsoidal light variability is detected, with stringent limits being set by MACHO and Gaia data. Assuming the primary to be a main sequence star yields a mass of 8.6$ M_\odot$, while the additional assumption of synchronous rotation constrains the inclination to be almost pole-on with i~9 degrees, implying the secondary is a BH with a mass of $\sim$25 $M_\odot$. A low mass stripped star with similar luminosity is ruled out as a potential solution as its mass implies a Roche radius that is substantially smaller than the stellar radius. The outer period likely exceeds 120 days and, while the disk-like emission is variable (it is almost absent in the SALT dataset), it may be associated with the inner binary rather than the rapidly rotating tertiary. XMM-Newton provides an upper limit of 5x$10^{33}$ ergs/s on the X-ray flux, consistent with, though not constraining of, the system hosting a quiescent B+BH binary. We focus on post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries and study the interaction between the different components of these complex systems. These components comprise the post-AGB primary, a main sequence secondary, a circumbinary disk, as well as a fast bipolar outflow (jet) launched by the companion. We obtained well-sampled time series of high resolution optical spectra over the last decade and these spectra provide the basis of our study. The jet is detected in absorption, at superior conjunction, when the line of sight towards the primary goes through the bipolar cone. Our spectral time series scan the jets during orbital motion. Our spatio-kinematic model is constrained by these dynamical spectra. We complement this with a radiative-transfer model in which the Balmer series are used to derive total mass-loss rates in the jets. The jets are found to be wide and display an angle-dependent density structure with a dense and slower outer region near the jet cone and a fast inner part along the jet symmetry axes. The deprojected outflow velocities confirm that the companions are main sequence companions. The total mass-loss rates are large (10^{-8} and 10^{-5}\,solar mass per year), from which we can infer that the mass-accretion rates onto the companion star must be high as well. The circumbinary disk is likely the main source for the accretion disk around the companion. All systems with full disks that start near the sublimation radius show jets, whereas for systems with evolved transition disks, this lowers to a detection rate of 50%. Objects without an infrared excess do not show jets. We conclude that jet creation in post-AGB binaries is a mainstream process. The interaction between the circumbinary disks and the central binary provide the needed accretion flow, but the presence of a circumbinary disk does not seem to be the only prerequisite to launch a jet., 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

Massive stars at low metallicity are among the main feedback agents in the early Universe and in present-day star forming galaxies. When in binaries, these stars are potential progenitors of gravitational-wave events. Knowledge of stellar masses is a prerequisite to understanding evolution and feedback of low-metallicity massive stars. Using abundant spectroscopic and photometric measurements of an outstandingly bright eclipsing binary, we compare its dynamic, spectroscopic, and evolutionary mass estimates and develop a binary evolution scenario. We comprehensively studied the eclipsing binary system, AzV 476, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The light curve and radial velocities were analyzed to obtain the orbital parameters. The photometric and spectroscopic data in the UV and optical were analyzed using the Potsdam Wolf-Rayet model atmospheres. The obtained results are interpreted using binary-evolution tracks. AzV 476 consists of an O4IV-III((f))p primary and an O9.5:Vn secondary. Both components have similar current masses (~20 M$_{\odot}$) obtained from both the orbital and spectroscopic analysis. The wind mass-loss rate of log($\dot{M}$/(M$_{\odot}$/yr))=-6.2 of the primary is a factor of ten higher than a recent empirical prescription for single O stars in the SMC. Only close-binary evolution with mass transfer can reproduce the current stellar and orbital parameters. The binary evolutionary model reveals that the primary has lost about half of its initial mass and is already core helium burning. Our comprehensive analysis of AzV 476 yields a consistent set of parameters and suggests previous case B mass transfer. The derived stellar masses agree within their uncertainties. The moderate masses of AzV 476 underline the scarcity of bright massive stars in the SMC. The core helium burning nature of the primary indicates that stripped stars might be hidden among OB-type populations., Comment: 18 pages + 5 pages appendix, 17 figures, 8 tables. Context. It is well known that massive O stars are frequently (if not always) found in binary or higher-order multiple systems, but this fact has been less robustly investigated for the lower mass range of the massive stars, represented by B-type stars. Obtaining the binary fraction and orbital parameter distributions of B-type stars is crucial to understand the impact of multiplicity on the archetypal progenitor of core-collapse supernovae as well as to properly investigate formation channels for gravitational wave progenitors. Aims. This work aims to characterise the multiplicity of the B star population of the young open cluster NGC 6231 through multi-epoch optical spectroscopy of 80 B-type stars. Methods. We analyse 31 FLAMES/GIRAFFE observations of 80 B-type stars, monitoring their radial velocities (RVs) and performing a least-squares spectral analysis (Lomb-Scargle) to search for periodicity in those stars with statistically significant variability in their RVs. Results. We constrained an observed spectroscopic binary fraction of 33 ± 5% for the B-type stars of NGC 6231, with a first order bias correction giving a true spectroscopic binary fraction of 52 ± 8%. Out of 27 B-type binary candidates, we obtained orbital solutions for 20 systems: 15 single-lined (SB1) and five double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s). We present these orbital solutions and the orbital parameter distributions associated with them. Conclusions. Our results indicate that Galactic B-type stars are less frequently found in binary systems than their more massive O-type counterparts, but their orbital properties generally resemble those of B- and O-type stars in both the Galaxy and Large Magellanic Cloud.

Context. The eclipsing close binary UU Cas is an interacting massive double-periodic system with a gainer star partly hidden in an accretion disk. Aims. In order to study the physics of the accretion process in greater detail, along with the structure and dynamics of the circumstellar matter in the system, we supplement our previous results obtained from photometry with an analysis of the spectra of UU Cas. Methods. We collected all available spectra used in previous publications on UU Cas and we acquired new ones. The method of disentangling was applied to this set of spectra spanning the years 2008 2021. The orbital parameters were disentangled and a fit of the separated component spectra by synthetic ones has been used to determine the physical parameters of the component stars. We compared the results to models of the evolution of interacting binaries. Results. We found that in addition to the dominant role of the donor star and a weak contribution of the gainer, the line profiles are strongly influenced by the circumstellar matter. The absorption lines reveal a presence of a disk wind emanating above the orbital plane. The variability of Hα emission yields evidence of changes in the structure of the circumstellar matter on a timescale of several orbital periods. © ESO 2022. Two main scenarios have been proposed for origin of massive runaway stars -- dynamical ejection or release from a binary at the first core collapse -- but their relative contribution remains debated. Using two large spectroscopic campaigns towards massive stars in 30 Doradus, we aim to provide observational constraints on the properties of the O-type runaway population in the most massive active star-forming region in the Local group. We use RV measurements of the O-type star populations in 30 Doradus obtained by the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey and the Tarantula Massive Binary Monitoring to identify single and binary O-type runaways. We discuss their rotational properties and qualitatively compare observations with expectations of ejection scenarios. We identify 23 single and one binary O-type runaway objects, most of them outside the main star-forming regions in 30 Doradus. We find an overabundance of rapid rotators (vsini > 200km/s) among the runaway population, providing an explanation of the overabundance of rapidly rotating stars in the 30 Doradus field. Considerations of the projected rotation rates and runaway line-of-sight (los) velocities reveal a conspicuous absence of rapidly rotating (vsini > 210k/ms), fast moving (v_{los} > 60km/s) runaways, and suggest the presence of two different populations of runaway stars: a population of rapidly-spinning but slowly moving runaways and a population of fast moving but slowly rotating ones. These are detected with a ratio close to 2:1 in our sample. We argue that slowly moving but rapidly spinning runaways result from binary ejections, while rapidly moving but slowly spinning runaways could result from dynamical ejections. This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We present follow-up imaging and spectroscopic observations of the exoplanet host star γ Cep A, and of its low-mass stellar companion γ Cep B. We used the lucky-imager AstraLux at the Calar Alto observatory to follow the orbital motion of the companion around its primary, whose radial velocity (RV) was determined with spectra of the star, taken with the Échelle spectrograph FLECHAS at the University Observatory Jena. We measured the astrometry of the companion relative to the exoplanet host star in all AstraLux images and determined its apparent SDSS i′-band photometry, for which we obtained mag. Using stellar evolutionary models and the Gaia parallax of the exoplanet host star, we derived the mass of γ Cep B to be 0.39 ± 0.03 M⊙. This is in good agreement with the mass of the companion that we derived from its near-infrared photometry given in the literature. With the detection limit reached in our AstraLux images, we explored the detection space of potential additional companions in the γ Cep binary system. In the background limited region at angular separations larger than 5 arcsec (or 69 au of projected separation) companions down to 0.11 M⊙ are detectable around the bright exoplanet host star. The radial field of view, fully covered by our AstraLux observations, exhibits a radius of 11.2 arcsec. This allows the detection of companions with projected separations up to 155 au. However, except for γ Cep B, no additional companions could be imaged with AstraLux around the exoplanet host star. We redetermined the orbital solution of the γ Cep binary system with the new AstraLux astrometry of γ Cep B and the additional radial velocities of γ Cep A, obtained from our FLECHAS spectroscopy of the star, combined with astrometric and RV data from the literature. The determined Keplerian orbital elements were used to derive the system parameters and to calculate specific future ephemeris for this intriguing exoplanet host binary star system. © 2022 The Authors. Accurate stellar parameters of stars in open clusters can help constrain models of stellar structure and evolution. Here we wish to determine the age and metallicity content of the open cluster NGC 2506. To this end we investigated three detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs; V2032, V4, and V5) for which we determined their masses and radii, as well as four red giant branch stars for which we determined their effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities. Three of the stars in the DEBs have masses close to the cluster turn-off mass, allowing for extremely precise age determination. Comparing the values for the masses and radii of the binaries to BaSTI isochrones we estimated a cluster age of $2.01 \pm 0.10$ Gyr. This does depend on the models used in the comparison, where we have found that the inclusion of convective core-overshooting is necessary to properly model the cluster. From red giant branch stars we determined values for the effective temperatures, the surface gravities, and the metallicities. From these we find a cluster metallicity of $-0.36 \pm 0.10$ dex. Using this value and the values for the effective temperatures we determine the reddening to be E$(b - y) = 0.057 \pm 0.004$ mag. Furthermore, we derived the distance to the cluster from Gaia parallaxes and found $3.101 \pm 0.017$ kpc, and we have performed a radial velocity membership determination for stars in the field of the cluster. Finally, we report on the detection of oscillation signals in $\gamma$ Dor and $\delta$ Scuti members in data from the TESS mission, including the possible detection of solar-like oscillations in two of the red giants., Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of a four-month, spectroscopic campaign of the Wolf-Rayet dust-making binary, WR137. We detect only small-amplitude, random variability in the CIII5696 emission line and its integrated quantities (radial velocity, equivalent width, skewness, kurtosis) that can be explained by stochastic clumps in the wind of the WC star. We find no evidence of large-scale, periodic variations often associated with Corotating Interaction Regions that could have explained the observed intrinsic continuum polarization of this star. Our moderately high-resolution and high signal-to-noise average Keck spectrum shows narrow double-peak emission profiles in the Halpha, Hbeta, Hgamma, HeII6678 and HeII5876 lines. These peaks have a stable blue-to-red intensity ratio with a mean of 0.997 and a root-mean-square of 0.004, commensurate with the noise level; no variability is found during the entire observing period. We suggest that these profiles arise in a decretion disk around the O9 companion, which is thus an O9e star. The characteristics of the profiles are compatible with those of other Be/Oe stars. The presence of this disk can explain the constant component of the continuum polarization of this system, for which the angle is perpendicular to the plane of the orbit, implying that the rotation axis of the O9e star is aligned with that of the orbit. It remains to be explained why the disk is so stable within the strong ultraviolet radiation field of the O star. We obtained photometric observations of the nova-like cataclysmic variable RW Tri and gathered all available AAVSO and other data from the literature. We determined the system parameters and found their uncertainties using the code developed by us to model the light curves of binary systems. New time-resolved optical spectroscopic observations of RW Tri were also obtained to study the properties of emission features produced by the system. The usual interpretation of the single-peaked emission lines in nova-like systems is related to the bi-conical wind from the accretion disc's inner part. However, we found that the Halpha emission profile is comprised of two components with different widths. We argue that the narrow component originates from the irradiated surface of the secondary, while the broader component's source is an extended, low-velocity region in the outskirts of the accretion disc, located opposite to the collision point of the accretion stream and the disc. Context. Massive stars are a key element for understanding the chemical and dynamical evolution of galaxies. Stellar evolution is conditioned by many factors: Rotation, mass loss, and interaction with other objects are the most important ones for massive stars. During the first evolutionary stages of stars with initial masses (i.e., MZAMS) in the MZAMS ∼ 18–70 M⊙ range, they are of spectral type O. Given that stars in this mass range spend roughly 90% of their lifetime as O-type stars, establishing the multiplicity frequency and binary properties of O-type stars is crucial for many fields of modern astrophysics. Aims. The aim of the MONOS project is to collect information to study northern Galactic O-type spectroscopic binaries. In this second paper, we tackle the study of the 35 single-line spectroscopic binary (SB1) systems identified in the previous paper of the series, analyze our data, and review the literature on the orbits of the systems. Methods. We have measured ∼4500 radial velocities for a selection of diagnostic lines for the ∼700 spectra of the studied systems in our database, for which we have used two different methods: a Gaussian fit for several lines per object and cross-correlation with synthetic spectra computed with the FASTWIND stellar atmospheric code. We have also explored the photometric data delivered by the TESS mission to analyze the light curve (LC) of the systems, extracting 31 of them. We have explored the possible periods with the Lomb-Scargle method and, whenever possible, calculated the orbital solutions using the SBOP and GBART codes. For those systems in which an improved solution was possible, we merged our radial velocities with those in the literature and calculated a combined solution. Results. As a result of this work, of the 35 SB1 systems identified in our first paper we have confirmed 21 systems as SB1 with good orbits, discarded the binary nature of six stars (9 Sge, HD 192 281, HDE 229 232 AB, 68 Cyg, HD 108, and α Cam), and left six stars as inconclusive due to a lack of data. The remaining two stars are 15 Mon Aa, which has been classified as SB2, and Cyg OB2-22 C, for which we find evidence that it is most likely a triple system where the O star is orbiting an eclipsing SB1. We have also recalculated 20 new orbital solutions, including the first spectroscopic orbital solution for V747 Cep. For Cyg OB2-22 C, we have obtained new ephemerides but no new orbit. We performed a detailed spectroscopic study of the SB2 system HD 60803 based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the different spectrographs. The analysis was done with two independent methods: a) the direct modelling of the observed binary spectrum by a sum of synthetic spectra varying a set of free parameters and minimizing a difference between the observed and theoretical spectra; b) spectrum disentangling and an independent modelling of the individual components. Being applied to binary spectra from different spectrographs both methods converge to a consistent solution for the fundamental parameters of the HD 60803 components: $T_{\rm eff}$=6055$\pm$70 K, $\log{g}$=4.08$\pm$0.12, $\zeta_{\rm RT}$=1.45$\pm$0.18 km s$^{-1}$, [M/H]=0.03$\pm$0.06 (primary), and $T_{\rm eff}$=6069$\pm$70 K, $\log{g}$=4.14$\pm$0.09, $\zeta_{\rm RT}$=1.48$\pm$0.18 km s$^{-1}$, [M/H]=0.03$\pm$0.06 (secondary). Differential abundance analysis of the components did not reveal any significant difference in their chemical composition. Besides Li both components have solar atmospheric abundances. Li abundance exceeds the solar one by $\sim$2 dex, but it agrees with Li abundance in main-sequence late F-stars. Relative-to-solar abundances in both components slightly correlate with the condensation temperature the same way as was found in the solar analogs with/without detected giant planets. Context. Double-lined spectroscopic (SB2) binaries allow us to obtain a direct determination of the masses of their components, which is essential to test stellar models. Although these objects only provide a lower limit for the mass, they are more abundant than their eclipsing counterparts as they are not as strongly limited by the inclination of their orbit. Aims. Our aim is to derive the orbital and physical parameters of GJ 1284, a young SB2. We also revise the membership of this system and its two wide co-moving companions, GJ 898 and GJ 897AB, to a young moving group to assess, along with other youth indicators, their age. Afterwards, we compare the results from these analyses and the photometry of these systems with several pre-main-sequence evolutionary models. Methods. We use high-resolution spectra to determine the radial velocity of each component of GJ 1284 and the orbit of the system alongside its systemic velocity. Additionally, we use TESS photometry to derive the rotational period of the GJ 1284 and its two wide companions. Results. GJ 1284 is a binary system located at approximately 16 pc with an eccentric orbit (e = 0.505) of 11.83 d period made up of an M2-M2.5 + M3-M3.5 with minimum masses of M sin 3i = 0.141 ± 0.003 and 0.1189 ± 0.003 M⊙, respectively. The revised systemic velocity of γ = 0.84 ± 0.14 km s-1 suggests that it is a member of the Local Association. The kinematics together with other activity and youth indicators imply an age of 110-800 Myr for this system and its two companions. Conclusions. The isochronal ages derived from the comparison of the photometry with several evolutionary models are younger than the age estimated from the activity indicators for the three co-moving systems. The masses for the components of GJ 1284, derived from their luminosity and age using the different models, are not consistent with the masses derived from the photometry, except for the PARSEC models, but are compatible with dynamical masses of double-lined eclipsing binaries with similar ages and spectral types. The effect of magnetic activity in the form of spots can reconcile to some extent the photometric and dynamical masses, but is not considered in most of the evolutionary models.

Observations of massive stars in young open clusters (< ~8 Myr) have shown that a majority of them are in binary systems, most of which will interact during their life. Populations of massive stars older than ~20 Myr allow us to probe the outcome of such interactions after many systems have experienced mass and angular momentum transfer. Using multi-epoch integral-field spectroscopy, we investigate the multiplicity properties of the massive-star population in NGC 330 (~40 Myr) in the Small Magellanic Cloud to search for imprints of stellar evolution on the multiplicity properties. From six epochs of VLT/MUSE observations supported by adaptive optics we extract spectra and measure radial velocities for stars brighter than F814W = 19. We identify single-lined spectroscopic binaries through significant RV variability as well as double-lined spectroscopic binaries, and quantify the observational biases for binary detection. The observed spectroscopic binary fraction is 13.2+/-2.0 %. Considering period and mass ratio ranges from log(P)=0.15-3.5, and q = 0.1-1.0, and a representative set of orbital parameter distributions, we find a bias-corrected close binary fraction of 34 +8 -7 %. This seems to decline for the fainter stars, which indicates either that the close binary fraction drops in the B-type domain, or that the period distribution becomes more heavily weighted towards longer orbital periods. Both fractions vary strongly in different regions of the color-magnitude diagram which probably reveals the imprint of the binary history of different groups of stars. We provide the first homogeneous RV study of a large sample of B-type stars at a low metallicity. The overall bias-corrected close binary fraction of B stars in NGC 330 is lower than the one reported for younger Galactic and LMC clusters. We study the $\delta$ Scuti -- red giant binary KIC9773821, the first double-pulsator binary of its kind. It was observed by \textit{Kepler} during its four-year mission. Our aims are to ascertain whether the system is bound, rather than a chance alignment, and to identify the evolutionary state of the red giant via asteroseismology. An extension of these aims is to determine a dynamical mass and an age prior for a $\delta$ Sct star, which may permit mode identification via further asteroseismic modelling. We determine spectroscopic parameters and radial velocities (RVs) for the red giant component using HERMES@Mercator spectroscopy. Light arrival-time delays from the $\delta$ Sct pulsations are used with the red-giant RVs to determine that the system is bound and to infer its orbital parameters, including the binary mass ratio. We use asteroseismology to model the individual frequencies of the red giant to give a mass of $2.10^{+0.20}_{-0.10}$ M$_{\odot}$ and an age of $1.08^{+0.06}_{-0.24}$ Gyr. We find that it is a helium-burning secondary clump star, confirm that it follows the standard $\nu_{\rm max}$ scaling relation, and confirm its observed period spacings match their theoretical counterparts in the modelling code MESA. Our results also constrain the mass and age of the $\delta$ Sct star. We leverage these constraints to construct $\delta$ Sct models in a reduced parameter space and identify four of its five pulsation modes., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Models of stellar structure and evolution can be constrained using accurate measurements of the parameters of eclipsing binary members of open clusters. Multiple binary stars provide the means to tighten the constraints and, in turn, to improve the precision and accuracy of the age estimate of the host cluster. In the previous two papers of this series, we have demonstrated the use of measurements of multiple eclipsing binaries in the old open cluster NGC6791 to set tighter constraints on the properties of stellar models than was previously possible, thereby improving both the accuracy and precision of the cluster age. We identify and measure the properties of a non-eclipsing cluster member, V56, in NGC\,6791 and demonstrate how this provides additional model constraints that support and strengthen our previous findings. We analyse multi-epoch spectra of V56 from FLAMES in conjunction with the existing photometry and measurements of eclipsing binaries in NGC6971. The parameters of the V56 components are found to be $M_{\rm p}=1.103\pm 0.008 M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\rm s}=0.974\pm 0.007 M_{\odot}$, $R_{\rm p}=1.764\pm0.099 R_{\odot}$ and $R_{\rm s}=1.045\pm0.057 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff,p}=5447\pm125$ K and $T_{\rm eff,s}=5552\pm125$ K, and surface [Fe/H]=$+0.29\pm0.06$ assuming that they have the same abundance. The derived properties strengthen our previous best estimate of the cluster age of $8.3\pm0.3$ Gyr and the mass of stars on the lower red giant branch (RGB), which is $M_{\rm RGB} = 1.15\pm0.02M_{\odot}$ for NGC6791. We report the discovery of the closest known black hole candidate as a binary companion to V723 Mon. V723 Mon is a nearby ($d\sim460\,\rm pc$), bright ($V\simeq8.3$~mag), evolved ($T_{\rm eff, giant}\simeq4440$~K, and $L_{\rm giant}\simeq173~L_\odot$) red giant in a high mass function, $f(M)=1.72\pm 0.01~M_\odot$, nearly circular binary ($P=59.9$ d, $e\simeq 0$). V723 Mon is a known variable star, previously classified as an eclipsing binary, but its All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS), Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT), and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) light curves are those of a nearly edge-on ellipsoidal variable. Detailed models of the light curves constrained by the period, radial velocities and stellar temperature give an inclination of $87.0^\circ{}^{+1.7^{\circ}}_{-1.4^{\circ}} $, a mass ratio of $q\simeq0.33\pm0.02$, a companion mass of $M_{\rm comp}=3.04\pm0.06~M_\odot$, a stellar radius of $R_{\rm giant}=24.9\pm0.7~R_\odot$, and a giant mass of $M_{\rm giant}=1.00\pm0.07~ M_\odot$. We identify a likely non-stellar, diffuse veiling component with contributions in the $B$ and $V$-band of ${\sim}63\%$ and ${\sim}24\%$, respectively. The SED and the absence of continuum eclipses imply that the companion mass must be dominated by a compact object. We do observe eclipses of the Balmer lines when the dark companion passes behind the giant, but their velocity spreads are low compared to observed accretion disks. The X-ray luminosity of the system is $L_{\rm X}\simeq7.6\times10^{29}~\rm ergs~s^{-1}$, corresponding to $L/L_{\rm edd}{\sim}10^{-9}$. The simplest explanation for the massive companion is a single compact object, most likely a black hole in the "mass gap"., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Context. M dwarfs are ideal targets for the search of Earth-size planets in the habitable zone using the radial velocity method, and are attracting the attention of many ongoing surveys. One of the expected results of these surveys is that new multiple-star systems have also been found. This is the case also for the CARMENES survey, thanks to which nine new double-line spectroscopic binary systems have already been announced. Aims. Throughout the five years of the survey the accumulation of new observations has resulted in the detection of several new multiple-stellar systems with long periods and low radial-velocity amplitudes. Here we newly characterise the spectroscopic orbits and constrain the masses of eight systems and update the properties of a system that we had reported earlier. Methods. We derived the radial velocities of the stars using two-dimensional cross-correlation techniques and template matching. The measurements were modelled to determine the orbital parameters of the systems. We combined CARMENES spectroscopic observations with archival high-resolution spectra from other instruments to increase the time span of the observations and improve our analysis. When available, we also added archival photometric, astrometric, and adaptive optics imaging data to constrain the rotation periods and absolute masses of the components. Results. We determined the spectroscopic orbits of nine multiple systems, eight of which are presented for the first time. The sample is composed of five single-line binaries, two double-line binaries, and two triple-line spectroscopic triple systems. The companions of two of the single-line binaries, GJ 3626 and GJ 912, have minimum masses below the stellar boundary, and thus could be brown dwarfs. We found a new white dwarf in a close binary orbit around the M star GJ 207.1, located at a distance of 15.79 pc. LB-1 has variously been proposed as either an X-ray dim B-type star plus black hole (B+BH) binary, or a Be star plus an inflated stripped star (Be+Bstr) binary. The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board HST was used to obtain a flux-calibrated spectrum that is compared with non-LTE spectral energy distributions (SED) and line profiles for the proposed models. The Hubble data, together with the Gaia EDR3 parallax, provide tight constraints on the properties and stellar luminosities of the system. In the case of the Be+Bstr model we adopt the published flux ratio for the Be and Bstr stars, re-determine the T$_{eff}$ of the Bstr using the silicon ionization balance, and infer Teff for the Be star from the fit to the SED. We derive stellar parameters consistent with previous results, but with greater precision enabled by the Hubble SED. While the Be+Bstr model is a better fit to the HeI lines and cores of the Balmer lines in the optical, the B+BH model provides a better fit to the Si iv resonance lines in the UV. The analysis also implies that the Bstr star has roughly twice solar silicon abundance, difficult to reconcile with a stripped star origin. The Be star on the other hand has a rather low luminosity, and a spectroscopic mass inconsistent with its possible dynamical mass. The fit to the UV can be significantly improved by reducing the T$_{eff}$ and radius of the Be star, though at the expense of leading to a different mass ratio. In the B+BH model, the single B-type spectrum is a good match to the UV spectrum. Eclipsing binaries (EBs) are unique benchmarks for stellar evolution. On the one hand, detached EBs hosting at least one star with detectable solar-like oscillations constitute ideal test objects to calibrate asteroseismic measurements. On the other hand, the oscillations and surface activity of stars that belong to EBs offer unique information about the evolution of binary systems. This paper builds upon previous works dedicated to red giant stars (RG) in EBs -- 20 known systems so far -- discovered by the NASA Kepler mission. Here we report the discovery of 16 RGs in EBs also from the Kepler data. This new sample includes three SB2-EBs with oscillations and six close systems where the RG display a clear surface activity and complete oscillation suppression. Based on dedicated high-resolution spectroscopic observations (Apache Point Observatory, Observatoire de Haute Provence), we focus on three main aspects. From the extended sample of 14 SB2-EBs, we first confirm that the simple application of the asteroseismic scaling relations to RGs overestimates masses and radii of RGs, by about 15% and 5%. This bias can be reduced by employing either new asteroseismic reference values for RGs, or model-based corrections of the asteroseismic parameters. Secondly, we confirm that close binarity leads to a high level of photometric modulation (up to 10%), and a suppression of solar-like oscillations. In particular, we show that it reduces the lifetime of radial modes by a factor of up to 10. Thirdly, we use our 16 new systems to complement previous observational studies that aimed at constraining tidal dissipation in interacting binaries. In particular, we identify systems with circular orbits despite relatively young ages, which suggests exploring complementary tidal dissipation mechanisms in the future. We started a program to search for companions around hybrid $\delta$ Sct/$\gamma$ Dor stars with the frequency modulation method using Kepler data. Our best candidate was KIC 5709664, where we could identify Fourier peaks with sidelobes, suggesting binary orbital motion. We determined the orbital parameters with the phase modulation method and took spectroscopic measurements to confirm unambiguously the binary nature with radial velocities. The spectra show that the object is a double-lined spectroscopic binary, and we determined the orbital solutions from the radial velocity curve fit. The parameters from the phase modulation method and the radial velocity fits are in good agreement. We combined a radial velocity and phase modulation approach to determine the orbital parameters as accurately as possible. We determined that the pulsator is a hybrid $\delta$ Sct/$\gamma$ Dor star in an eccentric binary system with an orbital period of ~95 d and an eccentricity of 0.55. The measured mass ratio is 0.67. We analysed the pulsation content and extracted 38 frequencies with amplitudes greater than 20 $\mu$mag. At low frequencies, we found broad power excesses which are likely attributed to spots on the rotating surface of the lower-mass component. Barium (Ba) dwarfs and CH subgiants are the less evolved analogues of Ba and CH giants. They are F-to G-Type main-sequence stars polluted with heavy elements by their binary companions when the companion was on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). This companion is now a white dwarf that in most cases cannot be directly detected. We present a large systematic study of 60 objects classified as Ba dwarfs or CH subgiants. Combining radial-velocity measurements from HERMES and SALT high-resolution spectra with radial-velocity data from CORAVEL and CORALIE, we determine the orbital parameters of 27 systems. We also derive their masses by comparing their location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with evolutionary models. We confirm that Ba dwarfs and CH subgiants are not at different evolutionary stages, and that they have similar metallicities, despite their different names. Additionally, Ba giants appear significantly more massive than their main-sequence analogues. This is likely due to observational biases against the detection of hotter main-sequence post-mass-Transfer objects. Combining our spectroscopic orbits with the HIPPARCOS astrometric data, we derive the orbital inclination and the mass of the WD companion for four systems. Since this cannot be done for all systems in our sample yet (but should be possible with upcoming Gaia data releases), we also analyse the mass-function distribution of our binaries. We can model this distribution with very narrow mass distributions for the two components and random orbital orientations on the sky. Finally, based on BINSTAR evolutionary models, we suggest that the orbital evolution of low-mass Ba systems can be affected by a second phase of interactions along the red giant branch of the Ba star, which impact the eccentricities and periods of the giants., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

V341 Ara was recently recognised as one of the closest (d ~ 150 pc) and brightest (V~ 10) nova-like cataclysmic variables. This unique system is surrounded by a bright emission nebula, likely to be the remnant of a recent nova eruption. Embedded within this nebula is a prominent bow-shock, where the system's accretion disc wind runs into its own nova shell. In order to establish its fundamental properties, we present the first comprehensive multi-wavelength study of the system. Long-term photometry reveals quasi-periodic, super-orbital variations with a characteristic time-scale of 10-16 days and typical amplitude of ~1 mag. High-cadence photometry from TESS reveals for the first time both the orbital period and a "negative superhump" period. The latter is usually interpreted as the signature of a tilted accretion disc. We propose a recently developed disc instability model as a plausible explanation for the photometric behaviour. In our spectroscopic data, we clearly detect anti-phased absorption and emission line components. Their radial velocities suggest a high mass ratio, which in turn implies an unusually low white dwarf mass. We also constrain the wind mass-loss rate of the system from the spatially resolved [O iii] emission produced in the bow-shock; this can be used to test and calibrate accretion disc wind models. We suggest a possible association between V341 Ara and a "guest star" mentioned in Chinese historical records in AD1240. If this marks the date of the system's nova eruption, V341 Ara would be the oldest recovered nova of its class and an excellent laboratory for testing nova theory., Accepted in MNRAS

Jets are a commonly observed phenomenon in post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries. Due to the orbital motion of the binary, the jet causes variable absorption in the Balmer profiles. In previous work, we have developed spatio-kinematic and radiative transfer models to reproduce the observed Balmer line variability and derive the spatio-kinematic structure of the jet and its mass-loss rate. Here, we apply our jet model to five post-AGB binaries with distinct H{\alpha} line variability and diverse orbital properties. Our models fit the H{\alpha} line variations very well. We estimate jet mass-loss rates between 10-8 Mdot yr-1 and 10-4 Mdot yr-1 , from which we deduce accretion rates onto the companion between 10-7 Mdot yr-1 and 10-3 Mdot yr-1 . These accretion rates are somewhat higher than can be comfortably explained with reasonable sources of accretion, but we argue that the circumbinary disc in these systems is most-likely the source feeding the accretion, although accretion from the post-AGB star cannot be ruled out. The diversity of the variability in the five objects is due to their wide ejection cones combined with a range of viewing angles, rather than inherent differences between the objects. The nature of the observations does not let us easily distinguish which jet launching model (stellar jet, disc wind, or X-wind) should be favoured. In conclusion, we show that our jet model includes the physical parameters to successfully reproduce the H{\alpha} line variations and retrieve the structure and mass-loss rates of the jet for all five objects that are representative of the diverse sample of Galactic post-AGB binaries., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the detection of a black hole (NGC 1850 BH1) in the ∼100-Myr-old massive cluster NGC 1850 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is in a binary system with a main-sequence turn-off star (4.9 ± 0.4 M·), which is starting to fill its Roche lobe and is becoming distorted. Using 17 epochs of Very Large Telescope/Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer observations, we detected radial velocity variations exceeding 300 km s-1 associated with the target star, linked to the ellipsoidal variations measured by the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment in the optical bands. Under the assumption of a semidetached system, the simultaneous modelling of radial velocity and light curves constrains the orbital inclination of the binary to 38° ± 2°, resulting in a true mass of the unseen companion of 11.1 -2.4+2.1\M⊙. Context. To quantitatively decode the information stored within an observed spectrum, detailed modelling of the physical state and accurate radiative transfer solution schemes are required. The accuracy of the model is then typically evaluated by comparing the calculated and observed spectra. In the analysis of stellar spectra, the numerical model often needs to account for binary companions and 3D structures in the stellar envelopes. The enigmatic binary (or multiple) system LB-1 constitutes a perfect example of such a complex multi-D problem. Thus far, the LB-1 system has been indirectly investigated by 1D stellar-atmosphere codes and by spectral disentangling techniques, yielding differing conclusions about the nature of the system (e.g., a B-star and black-hole binary with an accretion disc around the black hole or a stripped-star and Be-star binary system have been proposed). Aims. To improve our understanding of the LB-1 system, we directly modelled the phase-dependent Hα line profiles of this system. To this end, we developed and present a multi-purpose binary-object spectral-synthesis code in 3D (BOSS-3D). Methods. BOSS-3D calculates synthetic line profiles for a given state of the circumstellar material. The standard pz-geometry commonly used for single stars is extended by defining individual coordinate systems for each involved object and by accounting for the appropriate coordinate transformations. The code is then applied to the LB-1 system, considering two main hypotheses, a binary containing a stripped star and Be star, or a B star and a black hole with a disc. Results. Comparing these two scenarios, neither model can reproduce the detailed phase-dependent shape of the Hα line profiles. A satisfactory match with the observations, however, is obtained by invoking a disc around the primary object in addition to the Be-star disc or the black-hole accretion disc. Conclusions. The developed code can be used to model synthetic line profiles for a wide variety of binary systems, ranging from transit spectra of planetary atmospheres, to post-asymptotic giant branch binaries including circumstellar and circumbinary discs and massive-star binaries with stellar winds and disc systems. For the LB-1 system, our modelling provides strong evidence that each object in the system contains a disc-like structure.

As potential progenitors of several exotic phenomena including gravitational wave sources, magnetic stars, and Be stars, close massive binary systems probe a crucial area of the parameter space in massive star evolution. Despite the importance of these systems, large uncertainties regarding the nature and efficiency of the internal mixing mechanisms still exist. In this work, we aim to provide robust observational constraints on the internal mixing processes by spectroscopically analyzing a sample of three massive overcontact binaries at different metallicities. Using optical phase-resolved spectroscopic data, we perform an atmosphere analysis using more traditional 1D techniques and using state-of-the-art 3D techniques. We compare and contrast the assumptions and results of each technique and investigate how the assumptions affect the final derived atmospheric parameters. We find that in all three cases, both components of system are highly overluminous indicating either efficient internal mixing of helium or previous non-conservative mass transfer. However, we do not find strong evidence of helium or CNO surface abundance changes usually associated with mixing. Additionally, we find that in unequal mass systems, the measured effective temperature and luminosity of the less massive component places it very close to the more massive component on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. These results were obtained independently using both of the techniques mentioned above, which suggests that these measurements are robust. The observed discrepancies between the temperature and the surface abundance measurements when compared to theoretical expectations indicate that unaccounted for additional physical mechanisms may be at play., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 28 pages, 20 figures

We present an on-going project consisting of analysis of a sample of twenty-five metal-poor stars, most of them carbon-enriched and thus tagged carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, observed with the high-resolution HERMES spectrograph mounted on the Mercator telescope (La Palma), the UVES spectrograph on VLT (ESO Chile), or the HIRES spectrograph on KECK (Hawaii). This sample consists of CEMP-s stars, which are CEMP stars enriched in slow-neutron-capture (s-process) elements, as well as CEMP-rs stars enriched with both s-process and rapid-neutron-capture (r-process) elements. We also included an r-process-enriched star for comparison purposes. The origin of the abundance differences between CEMP-s and CEMP-rs stars is presently unknown. It has been claimed that the i-process (intermediate nucleosynthesis process), whose site still remains to be identified, could better reproduce CEMP-rs abundances than the s-process. Eclipsing binary systems with components that pulsate in gravity modes ($g$ modes) allow for simultaneous and independent constraints of the chemical mixing profiles of stars. We aim to assemble a sample of $g$-mode pulsators in detached eclipsing binaries with the purpose of finding good candidates for future evolutionary and asteroseismic modelling. In addition, we present a case study of the eclipsing binary KIC9850387, identified as our most promising candidate. We selected all of the detached eclipsing binaries in the Kepler eclipsing binary catalogue and performed a visual inspection to determine the presence and density of $g$ modes, and the presence of $g$-mode period-spacing patterns in their frequency spectra. We then characterised our sample based on their $g$-mode pulsational parameters and binary and atmospheric parameters. A spectroscopic follow-up of KIC9850387 was then performed. We then performed spectral disentangling followed by atmospheric modelling and abundance analysis for the primary star. We utilised an iterative approach to simultaneously optimise the pulsational and eclipse models, and subsequently performed an analysis of the pressure- ($p$-) and $g$-mode pulsational frequencies. We compiled a sample of 93 Kepler eclipsing binary stars with $g$-mode pulsating components and identified clear $g$-mode period-spacing patterns in the frequency spectra of seven of these systems. We found that the $g$-mode pulsational parameters and the binary and atmospheric parameters of our sample are weakly correlated at best. We find that the eclipsing binary KIC9850387 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary in a near-circular orbit with an intermediate-mass primary, and a solar-like secondary. We find $\ell=1$ and $\ell=2$ period-spacing patterns in the frequency spectrum of KIC9850387 spanning more than ten radial orders each., 27 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report time-resolved, high-resolution optical spectropolarimetric observations of the young double-lined spectroscopic binary V1878 Ori. Our observations were collected with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope through the BinaMIcS large programme. V1878 Ori A and B are partially convective intermediate mass weak-line T Tauri stars on an eccentric and asynchronous orbit. We also acquired X-ray observations at periastron and outside periastron. Using the least-squares deconvolution technique (LSD) to combine information from many spectral lines, we clearly detected circular polarization signals in both components throughout the orbit. We refined the orbital solution for the system and obtained disentangled spectra for the primary and secondary components. The disentangled spectra were then employed to determine atmospheric parameters of the two components using spectrum synthesis. Applying our Zeeman Doppler imaging code to composite Stokes $IV$ LSD profiles, we reconstructed brightness maps and the global magnetic field topologies of the two components. We find that V1878 Ori A and B have strikingly different global magnetic field topologies and mean field strengths. The global magnetic field of the primary is predominantly poloidal and non-axisymmetric (with a mean field strength of 180 G). while the secondary has a mostly toroidal and axisymmetric global field (mean strength of 310 G). These findings confirm that stars with very similar parameters can exhibit radically different global magnetic field characteristics. The analysis of the X-ray data shows no sign of enhanced activity at periastron, suggesting the lack of strong magnetospheric interaction at this epoch., 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Binary post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars have orbital periods in the range of 100--2500 days in eccentric orbits. They are surrounded by circumbinary dusty discs. They are the immediate result of unconstrained binary interaction processes. Their observed orbital properties do not correspond to model predictions: Neither the periods nor the high eccentricities are expected. Our goal is to investigate if interactions between a binary and its circumbinary disc during the post-AGB phase can result in their eccentric orbits, while simultaneously explaining the chemical anomaly known as depletion. For this paper, we selected three binaries (EP Lyr, RU Cen, HD 46703) with well-constrained orbits, luminosities, and chemical abundances. We used the MESA code to evolve post-AGB models, while including the accretion of metal-poor gas. This allows us to constrain the evolution of the stars and study the impact of circumbinary discs on the orbital properties of the models. We investigate the effect of torques produced by gas inside the binary cavity and the effect of Lindblad resonances on the orbit, while also including the tidal interaction following the equilibrium tide model. We find that none of our models are able to explain the high orbital eccentricities of the binaries in our sample. The accretion torque does not significantly impact the binary orbit, while Lindblad resonances can pump the eccentricity up to only $e \approx 0.2$. At higher eccentricities, the tidal interaction becomes too strong, so the high observed eccentricities cannot be reproduced. However, even if we assume tides to be ineffective, the eccentricities in our models do not exceed $\approx 0.25$. In the 10 years of observations, textsc{Rave} survey obtained radial velocities (RV) of 451,788 stars. Most of the stars were observed only once, but in the final textsc{Rave} data release 6, 37,664 of them (8.3 %) are classified as normal single stars that have multiple RV measurements. These objects were selected for this study. A probability function for the detection of RV variations is used for identifying 3838 single lined binary (SB1) candidates. From the 3838 SB1, 406 main sequence dwarf candidates with Solar like masses are selected and the estimation of orbital parameters (period, eccentricity, mass ratio and system velocity) is performed by matching the measured RVs with theoretical velocity curves sampling the orbital parameter space. The reliability of this method is verified by studying a mock sample from the The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits. Stars from this study were originally classified as normal single stars. Studying the boxiness and asymmetry of their calcium triplet spectral lines points out some possible SB2 candidates. Matching their spectra to a synthetic library indicates probable properties of their components. Joining textsc{Rave} and textit{Gaia} DR2 yields 450,646 stars with RVs measured by both surveys. Although textit{Gaia} published only median values of measured RVs, and stars with variable RVs were excluded from DR2, it turns out that 27,716 of them are SB1 candidates. This is an increase by an order of magnitude over study performed with the textsc{Rave} DR6 data only. It is obvious that larger time span between these two surveys will in the future enable detection of even more binaries, especially those with longer orbital periods. The study of SB1 from joined textsc{Rave} and textit{Gaia} surveys is of a great importance for the interpretation of the textit{Gaia} ongoing measurements, which will be published in the textit{Gaia} DR3, 1 year from now. Izmerjene vrednosti radialne hitrosti posamezne zvezde so primerjane s teoretiv{c}nimi, za razliv{c}ne vrednosti parametrov, ki dolov{c}ajo obliko krivulje spremembe radialne hitrosti. Zanesljivost metode je preverjena na testnem vzorcu zvezd, z znanimi orbitalnimi parametri iz kataloga spektroskopskih dvojnic. v{C}eprav so zvezde iz te v{s}tudije bile prvotno razvrv{sc}ene med obiv{c}ajne enojne zvezde, je podrobna v{s}tudija v{c}okatosti in asimetrij v profilih spektralnih v{c}rt kalcijevega tripleta v nekaj primerih nakazala prispevek svetlobe spremljevalke. Pribliv{z}ek vrednosti fizikalnih parametrov obeh komponent je pridobljen s primerjavo spektra s teoretiv{c}nimi sintetiv{c}nimi spektri. Najdene dvojnice z dvojnimi spektralnimi v{c}rtami (SB2) imajo krajv{s}e orbitalne periode, velikostnega reda nekaj tednov ali mesecev, ter vev{c}je razlike radialnih hitrosti, ob tem pa podobne mase, kar pomeni podoben izsev, zaradi v{c}esa lahko opazimo vpliv sekundarne komponente v spektru. Barium (Ba), CH, and extrinsic or Tc-poor S-type stars are evolved low- and intermediate-mass stars that show enhancement of slow-neutron-capture-process elements on their surface, an indication of mass accretion from a former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion, which is now a white dwarf (WD). Ba and CH stars can be found in the main-sequence (MS), the sub-giant, and the giant phase, while extrinsic S-type stars populate the giant branches only. As these polluted stars evolve, they might be involved in a second phase of interaction with their now white dwarf companion. In this paper, we consider systems composed of a main-sequence Ba star and a WD companion when the former evolves along the Red Giant Branch (RGB). We want to determine if the orbital properties of the known population of Ba, CH, and S giants can be inferred from the evolution of their suspected dwarf progenitors. For this purpose, we use the BINSTAR binary evolution code and model MS+WD binary systems, considering different binary interaction mechanisms, such as a tidally-enhanced wind mass-loss and a reduced circularisation efficiency. To explore their impact on the second RGB ascent, we compare the modelled orbits with the observed period and eccentricity distributions of Ba and related giants. We show that, independently of the considered mechanism, there is a strong period cut off below which core-He burning stars should not be found in binary systems with a WD companion. This limit is shorter for more massive RGB stars and for more metal-poor systems. However, we still find a few low-mass short-period giant systems that are difficult to explain with our models as well as two systems with very high eccentricities., Accepted for publication in A&A

HD 54662 AB is one of the three O + OB binaries known so far with orbital period longer than 1000 d, offering the opportunity to test scenarios of massive star formation and models of single stellar evolution. Here, we present a detailed study of this system based on new high-resolution spectra and data. A disentangling method is used to recover the individual spectra of the primary and secondary components, which are classified as O6.5 V(n)z and O7.5 Vz, respectively. Combining radial velocity measurements and astrometric data, a new absolute orbit with a period of 2113 ± 9 d and an eccentricity of 0.062 ± 0.008 is determined, confirming previous findings. However, absolute masses of 23.8 ± 1.1 M¿ for the primary and 20.3 ± 1.1 M¿ for the secondary are obtained, differing from previous determinations but in reasonable agreement with the spectral types of the stars. Primary and secondary components show remarkably different projected rotational velocities (160 and ¿40 $\rm km\, s^{-1}$, respectively), which is probably related to the formation process of the binary. Contrary to previously interpretations, the star with broader spectral features is the most massive object in the system. Stellar and wind parameters of both stars are derived through quantitative spectroscopic analysis of the disentangled spectra using fastwind models, and they are consistent with the current calibrations for O-type stars. Evolutionary masses and ages are also computed with the bonnsai tool. The multiplicity properties of massive stars are one of the important outstanding issues in stellar evolution. Quantifying the binary statistics of all evolutionary phases is essential to paint a complete picture of how and when massive stars interact with their companions, and to determine the consequences of these interactions. We investigate the multiplicity of an almost complete census of red supergiant stars (RSGs) in NGC 330, a young massive cluster in the SMC. Using a combination of multi-epoch HARPS and MUSE spectroscopy, we estimate radial velocities and assess the kinematic and multiplicity properties of 15 RSGs in NGC 330. Radial velocities are estimated to better than +/-100 m/s for the HARPS data. The line-of-sight velocity dispersion for the cluster is estimated as 3.20 +0.69-0.52 km/s. When virial equilibrium is assumed, the dynamical mass of the cluster is log (M{dyn} /M{sun}) = 5.20+/-0.17, in good agreement with previous upper limits. We detect significant radial velocity variability in our multi-epoch observations and distinguish between variations caused by atmospheric activity and those caused by binarity. The binary fraction of NGC 330 RSGs is estimated by comparisons with simulated observations of systems with a range of input binary fractions. In this way, we account for observational biases and estimate the intrinsic binary fraction for RSGs in NGC 330 as f{RSG} = 0.3+/-0.1 for orbital periods in the range 2.3< log P [days] 0.1. Using the distribution of the luminosities of the RSG population, we estimate the age of NGC 330 to be 45+/-5 Myr and estimate a red straggler fraction of 50%. We estimate the binary fraction of RSGs in NGC 330 and conclude that it appears to be lower than that of main-sequence massive stars, which is expected because interactions between an RSG and a companion are assumed to effectively strip the RSG envelope., Accepted to A&A. 14 pages

The eccentric massive binary HD152248 (also known as V1007 Sco), which hosts two O7.5 III-II(f) stars, is the most emblematic eclipsing O-star binary in the very young and rich open cluster NGC6231. Its properties render the system an interesting target for studying tidally induced apsidal motion. Measuring the rate of apsidal motion in such a binary system gives insight into the internal structure and evolutionary state of the stars composing it. A large set of optical spectra was used to reconstruct the spectra of the individual binary components and establish their radial velocities using a disentangling code. Radial velocities measured over seven decades were used to establish the rate of apsidal motion. We furthermore analysed the reconstructed spectra with the CMFGEN model atmosphere code to determine stellar and wind properties of the system. Optical photometry was analysed with the Nightfall binary star code. A complete photometric and radial velocity model was constructed in PHOEBE 2 to determine robust uncertainties. We find a rate of apsidal motion of $(1.843^{+0.064}_{-0.083})\deg$ yr$^{-1}$. The photometric data indicate an orbital inclination of $(67.6^{+0.2}_{-0.1})\deg$ and Roche-lobe filling factors of both stars of about 0.86. Absolute masses of $29.5^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$M$_\odot$ and mean stellar radii of $15.07^{+0.08}_{-0.12}$R$_\odot$ are derived for both stars. We infer an observational value for the internal structure constant of both stars of $0.0010\pm0.0001$. Our in-depth analysis of the massive binary HD152248 and the redetermination of its fundamental parameters can serve as a basis for the construction of stellar evolution models to determine theoretical rates of apsidal motion to be compared with the observational one. HR 6819 was recently proposed to be a triple system consisting of an inner B-type giant + black hole binary with an orbital period of 40d and an outer Be tertiary. This interpretation is mainly based on two inferences: that the emission attributed to the outer Be star is stationary, and that the inner star, which is used as mass calibrator for the black hole, is a B-type giant. We re-investigate the properties of HR 6819 by spectral disentangling and an atmosphere analysis of the disentangled spectra to search for a possibly simpler alternative explanation for HR 6819. Disentangling implies that the Be component is not a static tertiary, but rather a component of the binary in the 40-d orbit. The inferred radial velocity amplitudes imply an extreme mass ratio of M_2/M_1 = 15 +/- 3. We infer spectroscopic masses of 0.4$^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ Msun and 6$^{+5}_{-3}$ Msun for the primary and secondary, which agree well with the dynamical masses for an inclination of i = 32 deg. This indicates that the primary might be a stripped star rather than a B-type giant. Evolutionary modelling suggests that a possible progenitor system would be a tight (P_i ~ 2d) B+B binary system that experienced conservative mass transfer. While the observed nitrogen enrichment of the primary conforms with the predictions of the evolutionary models, we find no indications for the predicted He enrichment. We suggest that HR 6819 is a binary system consisting of a stripped B-type primary and a rapidly-rotating Be star that formed from a previous mass-transfer event. In the framework of this interpretation, HR 6819 does not contain a black hole. We report the discovery of the first transient with MeerKAT, MKT J170456.2$-$482100, discovered in ThunderKAT images of the low mass X-ray binary GX339$-$4. MKT J170456.2$-$482100 is variable in the radio, reaching a maximum flux density of $0.71\pm0.11\,\mathrm{mJy}$ on 2019 Oct 12, and is undetected in 15 out of 48 ThunderKAT epochs. MKT J170456.2$-$482100 is coincident with the chromospherically active K-type sub-giant TYC 8332-2529-1, and $\sim18\,\mathrm{years}$ of archival optical photometry of the star shows that it varies with a period of $21.25\pm0.04\,\mathrm{days}$. The shape and phase of the optical light curve changes over time, and we detect both X-ray and UV emission at the position of MKT J170456.2$-$482100, which may indicate that TYC 8332-2529-1 has large star spots. Spectroscopic analysis shows that TYC 8332-2529-1 is in a binary, and has a line-of-sight radial velocity amplitude of $43\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. We also observe a spectral feature in anti-phase with the K-type sub-giant, with a line-of-sight radial velocity amplitude of $\sim12\pm10\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, whose origins cannot currently be explained. Context. Many massive stars have nearby companions. These hamper a characterization of massive stars through spectroscopy.Aims. We continue to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy of close massive visual binaries to derive their spectral types.Methods. We used the lucky spectroscopy technique to obtain a large number of short long-slit spectroscopic exposures of 19 close visual binaries under good seeing conditions. We selected those with the best characteristics, extracted the spectra using multiple-profile fitting, and combined the results to derive spatially separated spectra. The results were analyzed in combination with data from lucky imaging, regular intermediate-resolution single-order spectroscopy, and echelle high-resolution spectroscopy.Results. The new application of lucky spectroscopy has allowed us (among other results) to [a] spatially disentangle two O stars (FN CMa B and 6 Cas B) with brighter BA supergiant companions for the first time; [b] determine that two B stars (alpha Sco B and HD 164 492 B) with close and more massive companions are fast rotators (in the second case, solving a case of mistaken identity); [c] extend the technique to cases with extreme magnitude differences (the previous two cases plus CS Cam A,B), shorter separations (HD 193 443 A,B), and fainter primary magnitudes down to B=11 (HD 219 460 A,B); [d] spatially disentangle the spectra of stars with companions as diverse as an A supergiant (6 Cas A), a Wolf-Rayet star (HD 219 460 B = WR 157), and an M supergiant (alpha Sco A); [e] discover the unexpected identity of some targets such as two previously unknown bright O stars (HD 51 756 B and BD +60 544) and a new member of the rare OC category (HD 8768 A); and [f] identify and classify (in some cases for the first time) which of the components of four visual binaries (sigma Ori, HD 219 460, HD 194 649, and HD 191 201) is a double-lined spectroscopic binary. For another seven systems (FN CMa, sigma Sco, HD 51 756, HD 218 195, HD 17 520, HD 24 431, and HD 164 492), we detect signs of spectroscopic binarity using high-spectral-resolution spectroscopy.
