This research aims to examine the nature of the orthographic reform proposals in the late nineteenth century in Spain, when Bourbon Restoration is established. From this moment, there is a resurgence of Spanish neography that, supported by the impulse from the different international reform movements, finds new reasons to expose its proposals and reform requests in some spaces of public opinion, specially in the press, which stands as the key piece for the orthographic discussion. This work will serve, from a general point of view, to evaluate the role of the written press in the resurgence of neographic actions in Spain; from a specific perspective, it aims to bring to light the reformist proposals from the historical press and to carry out its study taking into account the conjunction of the internal and external perspectives of linguistic historiography. This paper investigates the media discourses about gender violence of Spanish and Italian newspapers on Facebook, focusing on the aggressors. Analyzing the ideology, we see if the news let infer a social or a patriarchal perspective about gender violence, considering both newspapers and users' discourses. We adopt the Critical Discourse Analysis perspective, with a linguistic-discoursive glance and with a journalistic one. And with a linguistic-cognitive-semiotic and analytical methodology. Results tell us that the Spanish and Italian press represent the aggressors through a patriarchal ideology, influencing the users' discourses. Moreover, both in the newspaper discourses and in the users', we find differences between Spanish and Italian texts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This study analyzes the treatment of obesity in the Spanish press during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the aim of finding out how the information on this topic was framed. Methodology: Using the methodology of content analysis and the framing theory as a reference, 350 content units on obesity and COVID-19 published in the digital editions of the four most widely read Spanish general-information newspapers in 2020 were analyzed: El País, El Mundo, La Vanguardia and ABC. Results: In the contents that focus on obesity the individual responsibility frame predominates, attributing the cause of obesity to individual responsibility and disseminating the idea that being overweight is a personal choice. On the other hand, in those centred on COVID-19, the collective responsibility frame predominates. Offensive language and images that reflect negatively on people with obesity are also used, albeit in a minority of cases. Discussion: The media can influence the beliefs and attitudes of its audience, as well as health care decision-making. Thus, the way in which the media portrays obesity is important in increasing or reducing stigmatization toward people who suffer from it. Conclusions: Narrative attributing the cause of obesity to individual responsibility fosters increased social stigma and reinforces weight-based stereotypes and should be avoided in the media. This article analyses the content of 2742 news items on tourismification and tourism-phobia in Barcelona published in the Spanish press between 2008 and 2020. Based on Foucault's theoretical approach to the study of discourse and applying a content analysis method, the social construction of a tourism model is critically analysed through the examination of tourismification narratives. The dominant discourse on tourismification expressed by the Spanish press is organised into the following three narrative axes: the use of a local community point of view to highlight mass tourism as a contested social issue, governance as a solution for tourismification within the framework of the debate about the city's tourist identity and the use of tourism-phobia as a formula for politicisation of the discourse on tourism, to influence public opinion and develop power relations. The press discourse proposes a narrative that incorporates a critical reading of tourism in place of the previous growth-based discourse. However, while this discourse advocates for tourism as an invariable, necessary and strategic element of the city, even during episodes of extreme tourism crisis, it fights shy of alternative approaches that call for a 'transformative turn' in tourism. This paper is part of the DIPURE project, in which researchers from the universities of Almería, Murcia and Cardenal Herrera of Valencia have examined the public discourse on refugees in Spain from different perspectives. On this occasion, our object of study combines migration and health, as we have dealt with the journalistic discourse on the resignation syndrome, which, according to the little research that has been done on it, only affects children who applied for asylum in Sweden. To examine the treatment of the resignation syndrome in the Spanish media, we observed a sample of the written press published from 2015, the year in which the number of refugees in the world began to increase considerably, until June 2021. The study is framed within the hypergenre known as social debate and the main results of the study are structured in three dimensions: the first affects space and time; the second, actors; and the third, evaluations and arguments. After consulting 19th Century sources in the Digital Newspaper Archive of the National Library of Spain, we have found relevant information about two issues: the ideas about linguistic purity inserted in the reviews of several publications of the era –e.g. regarding The Principles of the French Language for Spanish Speakers (Valencia, 1815) by Luis Monfort– and opinion articles published ad hoc on this topic –e.g. the «preliminary reflections» about Diario de Madrid (no. 32 from the 7th February 1812) where it indicates that «our language has not risen its head yet […] several terms and idioms from the French language have been introduced, flooding our language as a torrent»–. Both issues have as a meeting point the documented information from the 19th Century press about the figure of Antonio de Capmany (Barcelona, 1742–Cadiz, 1813), who presents his views on the interesting evolution of linguistic purity.

The information in the press may reflect a certain informative bias in the published texts. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to analyze what was the discursive construction that the Spanish economic press made of the term ‘Brexit’. To do this, a lexical-semantic analysis, based on the study of the semantic prosody of the nouns co-occurring with ‘Brexit’, was carried out. The results shown that the Spanish economic press present a mainly neutral editorial stance when reporting on Brexit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the main visual characteristics of sub-Saharan immigrants represented as non-citizens in a sample from the Spanish press, and deepens on how this contributes to perpetuating the 'we-they' dichotomy. The data consist of all the news items published on sub-Saharan immigrants in the digital editions of the Spanish newspapers El País and ABC from 1 January 2016 to 1 January 2021. Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar and van Leeuwen's model for the visual representation of social actors will be the theoretical frameworks. The findings indicate that there are different visual ways to portray immigrants as non-citizens, which allows establishing this classification: representing immigrants' arrival as illegal and clandestine, portraying them as invaders, representing immigrants as violent individuals or associating them with animalization. All these can be considered visual dysphemisms that problematize the arrival of immigrants and highlight the differences between Spanish population and immigrants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
- Abstract

- Abstract
In 1967, in Spain there were 32 evening newspapers. Little more than thirty years later they had disappeared. Some press companies looked for a rescue board in the jump to the morning edition. And they found it. Today, six headers survive from those that were founded to be read at sunset: Diario de León, El Adelantado de Segovia, El Diario de Ávila, Extremadura, Lanza and Última Hora. This paper derives from a doctoral thesis now expanded with novel contributions, such as the study of Lanza, a digital newspaper. The methodology used is based on the content analysis of newspapers, in qualitative interviews, in the collection of data in archives, libraries and newspaper archives, translated into the preparation of tables and graphs, and in the bibliographic review., España contaba en 1967 con 32 periódicos vespertinos.

- Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to identify the dominant lexical frames in the editorials on the CubanWar published throughout 1898, in three of the main newspapers of the Spanish press: El Imparcial, El Liberaland Heraldo de Madrid. Journalism then exercised a great influence on political decisions. In addition, it wasthe only way that society had to find out about overseas events, hence its relevance to shape public opinion. The use of corpus analysis software has allowed us to carry out a quantitative analysis of the most recurringnouns and detect the most relevant semantic fields. In addition, the contrastive analysis has allowed us toknow the evolution experienced by the editorial line of each newspaper throughout the different stages ofthis war.

The projection and relevance of the phenomenon of populism in the last decade has caused the traditional press to be left out of the communication strategy established by populist politicians through social networks, mainly. The objective of this article is to investigate the role played by the two most important newspapers in Spain in the treatment of the terms «populism» and «populist» in their daily information. The sample is made up of 1,832 news and articles from the digital editions of El País and El Mundo during the years 2019 and 2020, in which an analysis of the path of these two words is carried out based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis. The study reveals the negative connotations of the terms applied to political parties and their leaders, especially Vox and Podemos, although most of the information analyzed tends to speak of populism/populist as an idea, ideology or sociological phenomenon. This research study is based on the analysis of a corpus of 413 news headlines of eight Spanish newspapers during the election coverage of Vox in the Spanish general elections held in April of 2019. By following the model developed by Gallardo Paúls (2014; 2021 in press), which examines pragmatic categories according to their textual, interactive and enunciative levels, we have identified discursive framing strategies that cognitively guide the headlines of all the newspapers in our corpus. Even though representative illocution was the most frequently used strategy in the texts compiled, a detailed analysis reveals that some of the media (e.g. ABC, La Vanguardia, El País and El Diario) used a evident lexical strategy (for example, the use of metaphors, metonyms, nominalisations with ironic value, etc.), which was able to elicit pre-activations contrary to this political party.

In 1898, the United States declared war on Spain and "came to the aid" of the Cubans in the liberation struggle they had begun in 1895 against Spain. These events aroused a wide media coverage. Although the differences are evident between the Spanish and American press, both countries pursue the same goal: to offer their vision of the conflict and ratify the hegemonic role they should play in it. Here we are interested in the image of Cuba in the journalistic satires and, in particular, the allegory of Cuba in the Spanish and American press. The intention is to discover the commonality of the forms, but also the symbolic discrepancies, so that the schemes of representation that transcend the immediacy of the political fact also emerge. The objective is, therefore, to deconstruct the visual process of symbolic construction of Cuba, and of the war that took place there, in the press in 1898. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SPANISH language -- Grammar , *PRESS , *ORTHOGRAPHY & spelling , *LINGUISTICS , *LANGUAGE & languages - Abstract
The objective of this work is the historiographic study of the orthographic fixation of the Spanish language in the 19th century during the so-called democratic six years (1868-1874), a significant period regarding Spanish educational legislation, which gives teachers the freedom for the selection of school text books and seems to open a new stage for the interests of the neographers. The officiality of academic orthography is not obligatory, so we are facing a particularly propitious moment for supporters of writing reform. In spite of everything, the neographer vindications disappear from public opinion forums; there is hardly a glimpse in the thick controversy between Bosch, Condomines and Gómez de Salazar. This research will serve, from a general point of view, to evaluate the role of the pedagogical press in the whole process of fixing the orthography in Spain; from a specific point of view, it intends to expose all this controversy and carry out its study taking into account the conjunction of the internal and external perspectives of linguistic historiography, in order to try to analyze its importance within the general process of Spanish orthography fixation, as well as explain the reasons for the absence of other similar controversies in this period. The exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union, popularly known as Brexit, has a great media coverage in Spain. Thus, this paper analyses the journalistic treatment and the ideological bias that this political event received. To do this, a study of the semantic prosody of the term 'Brexit' in the Spanish press was carried out. The study covers a broad period of time, from the exit referendum in June 2016 to the second extension in October 2019. To achieve the analysis, a corpus for specific purposes was compiled made up of the most widely read newspapers in Spain according to the Estudio General de Medios. Specifically, four generalist newspapers (El País, El Mundo, La Vanguardia and ABC) and three economic newspapers (Expansión, Cinco Días and El Economista). The data obtained showed that Brexit received mostly negative coverage in all newspapers, especially economic newspapers that presented a greater number of negative co-occurrences with the term Brexit. Spanish think tanks have played a relevant role in the design of the discourses that the media have been responsible for disseminating, shaping public opinion around issues related to the economic situation of the country. This study explores the media representation of Spanish think tanks, from a quantitative point of view. Likewise, its concentration in national media and agencies during the 2009-2018 decade is analyzed. A comparative analysis is performed in the periods 2009-2013 and 2014-2018. To carry out the research, a quantitative analysis of the contents published on 62 Spanish think tanks has been developed. The results suggest that the media representation of think tanks increases gradually over the years, regardless of the economic cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After the explosion of the battleship Maine in Havana harbor, the most important Spanish publications kept a sorrowful and prudent stance. Yet, when they considered the conflagration between the United States and Spain to be imminent, they sought to create a pro-war emotional climate, in the belief that victory would be on their side; and, of course, they lied to and manipulated their readers. However, the Iberian newspapers changed their attitude along the course of the conflict, because when the war was clearly lost for the Peninsula, after the defeat of the squadron commanded by Admiral Pascual Cervera in the naval battle of Santiago de Cuba in early July, they lowered their warmongering tone and gave a turn to their editorial line, seeking to press the Government led by Práxedes Mateo Sagasta into negotiating a quick peace settlement, not to waste time in order to make it as advantageous as possible.

This paper explores the semantic prosody of the lemma refugiado in the Spanish press over a 7-year period (2010-16) with the aim of examining the discursive representation of refugees in this textual genre. The study is concerned with diachronic and quantitative aspects, while focusing on the negative lexical units collocating with refugiado. The research is based on the analysis of a 1.8-million-word corpus of Spanish news articles about refugees that were extracted from the digital libraries of El País and El Mundo. The results show that the frequency of refugiado increases over the 2010-16 period, and so does its negative semantic prosody. This negativity –which is much higher in the last two years under study– is constructed through certain consistent collocates, seasonal collocates and patterns of language associated with refugees’ massive occupation and victimization.

Abstract. In the late 14th century, one Ibn ʿĀṣim, a man of letters from Nasrid Granada, reproduced the first Iberian version of the folktale ATU 1373. Starting from this version —which is the only developed text from Medieval Arabic Literature transmitted to us—, we will follow the evolution of the folk tale in Spain focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries, when we have documented several versions, both literary and other unpublished texts printed in the press.

This article attempts to answer the key question regarding to what extent the Spanish population knew about the Holocaust. To accomplish this, the paper analyzes a significant chapter in history, namely, the liberation of Auschwitz by the Soviet troops in January 1945. Thanks to the analysis of a wide repertoire of Spanish newspapers published during the same year, it can be seen how the Spanish population was informed about this event within the context of Francoist dictatorship. The analysis of these pieces of news by means of different media of the Spanish press of that time will enable us to answer a series of questions which have not been answered yet in the Spanish historiography such as: how were the accounts of the concentration camps, gas chambers, death marches and other atrocities committed against the prisoners? Why did it take such a long time for the Spanish press to publish the news which had been circulating in the foreign press? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of the neographic actions in the late nineteenth century in Spain and Chile has received little specific attention within the discussions focused on orthography reform. Although this topic reached greatest significance in previous decades, there is still a lack of studies that analyze the interest of the neographic actions on both sides of the Atlantic. The objectives of this work are a) the delimitation of interference and influences among supporters of reform in both nations and, especially, b) the nature and origin of their proposals, taking as a reference the importance of the written press as a means of disseminating reformist ideas and the influence exerted on these neographers by the Spelling reform movements at the international level, which initially served to promote and defend reformist interests in countries like France, England, Germany and, finally, Spain and Chile, where these neographers attempt the execution of their orthographic claims in a period in which the Royal Spanish Academy has fully consolidated its doctrine in different social spheres. The aim of this article is to analyze how the Spanish newspapers covered an international event such as the Egyptian spring from 2011 to 2013. From the perspective of the representation of Arab-Islamic issues, this study carries out a quantitative content analysis on the four reference newspapers in Spain (ABC, El Mundo, El País, and La Vanguardia) to find out whether there was an Islamophobic or Islamophilic treatment during the Egyptian revolution. The results of the 3,045 articles analyzed show that Spanish newspapers were remarkably interested in Egyptian events and that cultural discourses were not relevant in the coverage. However, it is necessary to specify these outcomes by newspaper, because each paper proposed its own take on the matter based on information provided by press agencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
