Remote sensing datasets offer robust approaches for gaining reliable insights into forest ecosystems. Despite numerous studies reviewing forest aboveground biomass estimation using remote sensing approaches, a comprehensive synthesis of synergetic integration methods to map and estimate forest AGB is still needed. This article reviews the integrated remote sensing approaches and discusses significant advances in estimating the AGB from space- and airborne sensors. This review covers the research articles published during 2015–2023 to ascertain recent developments. A total of 98 peer-reviewed journal articles were selected under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Among the scrutinized studies, 54 were relevant to spaceborne, 22 to airborne, and 22 to space- and airborne datasets. Among the empirical models used, random forest regression model accounted for the most articles (32). The highest number of articles utilizing integrated dataset approaches originated from China (24), followed by the USA (15). Among the space- and airborne datasets, Sentinel-1 and 2, Landsat, GEDI, and Airborne LiDAR datasets were widely employed with parameters that encompassed tree height, canopy cover, and vegetation indices. The results of co-citation analysis were also determined to be relevant to the objectives of this review. Dedicated to synchronously acquiring large-area, high-precision, and multi-scale ocean wind and wave information, a novel concept of a spaceborne ocean microwave dual-function integrated sensor is proposed in this paper. It integrates the functions of a scatterometer and SAR by sharing a single phased-array antenna. An overview of the scientific requirements and motivations for the sensor are outlined firstly. In order to fulfill the observation requirements of both the functions, the constraints on the system parameters such as frequency, antenna size, and incidence angle are analyzed. Then, the selection principles of these parameters are discussed within the limitations of antenna area, bandwidth, available time, and cost. Additionally, the constraints on the time sequence of transmitting and receiving pulses are derived to ensure that there is no conflict when the two functions operate simultaneously. Subsequently, a method for jointly designing the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of both the functions is introduced, along with zebra maps to verify its effectiveness. A Spaceborne broadband circularly polarized conformal antenna for ultra high frequency band is presented. The antenna mounted on the outer surface of the circular arc spherical cone satellite works in 390–450 MHz frequency band, and has the characteristics of broadband, light miniature. The measured results for the antenna demonstrate an impedance bandwidth of 32.5% from 360 to 500 MHz, an axial ratio bandwidth of 27.2% from 380 to 500 MHz, and a peak gain of 6.7 dBic. The antenna form can be applied to the field of broadband circularly polarized conformal antenna on satellite and missile, and has a wide application prospect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the continuous development of satellite payload and system-on-chip (SoC) technology, spaceborne real-time synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging systems play a crucial role in various defense and civilian domains, including Earth remote sensing, military reconnaissance, disaster mitigation, and resource exploration. However, designing high-performance and high-reliability SAR imaging systems that operate in harsh environmental conditions while adhering to strict size, weight, and power consumption constraints remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we introduce a spaceborne SAR imaging chip based on a SoC architecture with system fault-tolerant technology. The fault-tolerant SAR SoC architecture has a CPU, interface subsystem, memory subsystem, data transit subsystem, and data processing subsystem. The data processing subsystem, which includes fast Fourier transform (FFT) modules, coordinated rotation digital computer (CORDIC) modules (for phase factor calculation), and complex multiplication modules, is the most critical component and can achieve various modes of SAR imaging. Through analyzing the computational requirements of various modes of SAR, we found that FFT accounted for over 50% of the total computational workload in SAR imaging processing, while the CORDIC modules for phase factor generation accounted for around 30%. Therefore, ensuring the fault tolerance of these two modules is crucial. To address this issue, we propose a word-length optimization redundancy (WLOR) method to make the fixed-point pipelined FFT processors in FFT modules fault tolerant. Additionally, we propose a fault-tolerant pipeline CORDIC architecture utilizing error correction code (ECC) and sum of squares (SOS) check. For other parts of the SoC architecture, we propose a generic partial triple modular redundancy (TMR) hardening method based on the HITS algorithm to improve fault tolerance. Finally, we developed a fully automated FPGA-based fault injection platform to test the design's effectiveness by injecting errors at arbitrary locations. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methods significantly improved the chip's fault tolerance, making the SAR imaging chip safer and more reliable. We also implemented a prototype measurement system with a chip-included board and demonstrated the proposed design's performance on the Chinese Gaofen-3 strip-map continuous imaging system. The chip requires 9.2 s, 50.6 s, and 7.4 s for a strip-map with 16,384 × 16,384 granularity, multi-channel strip-map with 65,536 × 8192 granularity, and multi-channel scan mode with 32,768 × 4096 granularity, respectively, and the system hardware consumes 6.9 W of power to process the SAR raw data. In this work, a dual-band linear polarized C/X conformal shared aperture antenna (SAA) for spaceborne SAR applications is presented. The proposed single layer SAA is designed with a square-shaped patch in linear polarization and arranged as four elements ( $2\times 2$ ) array with corporate feeding to allow for efficient signal transmission. The design of that operates at C-band (5.35 GHz) and X-band (9.65 GHz). Most spaceborne applications, such satellite radar and weather forecasting, employ the C-band antenna. On the other hand, X-band antennas are used for surveillance, reconnaissance, air traffic control, and weather monitoring. A prototype is built, and its s-parameters are tested to confirm the antenna. With the suggested design, we were able to obtain a bandwidth of 65 MHz for C-band and 354 MHz for X-band, as well as gains of 13.2 dBi for the C-band and 10.6 dBi for the X-band, and isolation of more than 40 dB. The total size of the SAA size is $130\times 80\times0.8$ mm. According to this study, dual band antennas operating future SAR spacecraft on a same aperture is a practical solution to satisfy user demands.

Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (Pol-InSAR) based forest height estimation for ecosystem monitoring and management has been developing rapidly in recent years. Spaceborne Pol-InSAR systems with long temporal baselines of several days always lead to severe temporal decorrelation, which can cause a forest height overestimation error. However, most forest height estimation studies have not considered the change in dielectric property as a factor that may cause temporal decorrelation with a long temporal baseline. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a new method that considers dielectric fluctuations and random motions of scattering elements to compensate for the temporal decorrelation effect. The lack of ground truth for forest canopy also needs a solution. Unsupervised methods could be a solution because they do not require the use of true values of tree heights as the ground truth to calculate their estimation accuracies. This paper aims to present an unsupervised forest height estimation method called Dielectric Fluctuation and Random Motion over Ground (DF-RMoG) to improve accuracy by considering the dielectric fluctuations and random motions. Its performance is investigated using Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS)-1 Pol-InSAR data acquired over a German forest site with temporal intervals of 46 and 92 days. The authors analyze the relationship between forest height and different parameters with DF-RMoG and conventional models. Compared with conventional models, the proposed DF-RMoG model significantly reduces the overestimation error due to temporal decorrelation in forest height estimation according to its lowest average forest height. While our knowledge of tropical montane forests (TMFs) is limited, human activities continue to damage them. Remote sensing has shown its usefulness for forest investigations with difficult terrain. This study systematically reviewed the applications of spaceborne remote sensing to TMFs with regards to time, spatial distribution, journal publication, methodology, theme, sensor systems, vegetation zones, research needs, and techniques applied. Our review found that the number of papers published between 1997 to 2021 has increased considerably. Experts used optical sensors with low to medium spatial resolution (85.76%), and that the use of synthetic aperture radar received little attention (12.70%). Published articles varied substantially between continents, with the Americas having the most studies (62.26%), leaving Asia, Africa, and Oceania behind. Most research has focused on forestry (42.66%), climate science (11.01%), and disaster management (9.63%). This paper proposes a C/X/Ku/K band 6-bit digital step attenuator (DSA) which employs a variety of improved attenuation cells to achieve a wide bandwidth, stable amplitude variation, stable phase variation, and small area. In this paper, the improved T-type, π-type, and switched-path type topologies are analyzed theoretically and applied to different attenuation values to achieve the optimal attenuator performance. In addition, in order to reduce the complexity and to improve the stability of the overall radar system, the logic control circuit is integrated in the DSA chip in this paper. Finally, the proposed attenuator is implemented in 0.15μm GaAs technology, which has a maximum attenuation range of 31.5 dB with 0.5 dB steps. The proposed DSA exhibits a root-mean-square (RMS) attenuation error of less than 0.15 dB and an RMS phase error of less than 3°, at 4–24 GHz. The insertion loss (IL) and the area of the DSA are 4.3–4.5 dB and 1.5 mm × 0.4 mm, respectively. Benefiting from the improvements of the attenuation cells and the characteristic of GaAs technology with strong resistance to radiation and power processing capability, the proposed DSA is suitable for spaceborne radar systems. Seagrass meadows are a key ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, providing one of the natural heritage attributes underpinning the reef's outstanding universal value. We reviewed approaches employed to date to create maps of seagrass meadows in the optically complex waters of the Great Barrier Reef and explored enhanced mapping approaches with a focus on emerging technologies, and key considerations for future mapping. Our review showed that field-based mapping of seagrass has traditionally been the most common approach in the GBRWHA, with few attempts to adopt remote sensing approaches and emerging technologies. Using a series of case studies to harness the power of machine- and deep-learning, we mapped seagrass cover with PlanetScope and UAV-captured imagery in a variety of settings. Using a machine-learning pixel-based classification coupled with a bootstrapping process, we were able to significantly improve maps of seagrass, particularly in low cover, fragmented and complex habitats. We also used deep-learning models to derive enhanced maps from UAV imagery. Combined, these lessons and emerging technologies show that more accurate and efficient seagrass mapping approaches are possible, producing maps of higher confidence for users and enabling the upscaling of seagrass mapping into the future. In this article, we investigate the potential of using single-pass InSAR model-based approaches to retrieve dry snow parameters. Two InSAR scattering models of dry snow are considered: the dense-medium random volume over ground (RVoG) model and the simple variant of the full penetration (FP) model. A quasi-crystalline approximation (QCA)-based extinction analysis confirms the negligible extinction dependence of the InSAR observables at L/C/X-band for fresh dry snow. The FP models the low-frequency (L/C/X-band) InSAR phase as a single constraint of snow depth and density, which can be supplemented by an extra observation (e.g., InSAR coherence or in situ depth/density). The single-pass InSAR models and inversion approaches were validated using X-band InSAR data collected from a tower-based three-frequency (X/Ku-low/Ku-high) fully polarimetric TomoSAR system, where a multi-frequency polarimetric InSAR analysis and ground-to-volume ratio-based snow condition analysis were conducted. We also analyzed the sensitivity and error propagation of the single-pass InSAR phase and coherence in measuring dry snow depth/density. It was found that the X-band HH-pol FP-modeled single-pass InSAR phase along with RVoG-modeled coherence or in situ depth is capable of measuring snow water equivalent (SWE) with a 23–26 mm uncertainty (13–15%) and a 20–26 mm bias (12–15%) for dry snow SWE of 0.2 m, and with an optimal perpendicular baseline on the order of a tenth of the snow depth (0.8 m) at our test site. This single-pass InSAR approach with the FP model is potentially useful and thus needs further investigation for large-scale dry snow retrieval with a wide range of snow conditions using ground-based/airborne/spaceborne low-frequency (L/C/X-band) InSAR observations. In rugged terrain, topography substantially influences the illumination and observation geometry, and thus, the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of a surface. While this problem has been known and investigated for spaceborne optical data since the 1980s, it has led to several well-known topographic correction methods. To date, the methods developed for spaceborne data were equivalently applied to airborne data with distinctly higher spatial resolution, illumination/observation angle configurations and finally (instantaneous) field of view (FOV). On the one hand, this article evaluates, whether such a transfer of methods from spaceborne to airborne acquisitions is reasonable. On the other hand, a new Lambertian/statistical-empirical correction method is introduced. While in the spaceborne case the Modified Minnaert (MM) and the Statistical-Empirical (SE) methods performed best, MM led to the statistically and visually best compromise for the airborne data. Our results suggest further that with a higher spatial resolution various effects come into play (FOV widening; changing the fraction of geometric, volumetric and isotropic scattering, etc.), compromising previously successful methods, such as the SE method.

The performance of a spaceborne Raman lidar offering measurements of water vapor, temperature, aerosol backscatter and extinction is assessed statistically by use of a lidar simulator and a global model to provide inputs for simulation. The candidate thermodynamics lidar system is envisioned to make use of a sun-synchronous, dawn/dusk orbit. Cloud-free atmospheric profiles simulated by the NASA/GSFC GEOS model for the orbit of the CALIPSO satellite on 15 July 2009 were used as input to a previously validated lidar simulator where GEOS profiles that satisfy the solar zenith angle restrictions of the dawn/dusk orbit, and are located within the Planetary Boundary Layer as defined by the GEOS model, were selected for the statistical analysis. To assess the performance of the simulated thermodynamics lidar system, measurement goals were established by considering the WMO Observing Systems Capability Analysis and Review (OSCAR) requirements for Numerical Weather Prediction. The efforts of Di Girolamo et al., 2018 established the theoretical basis for the current work and discussed many of the technological considerations for a spaceborne thermodynamics lidar. The work presented here was performed during 2017–2018 under the auspices of the NASA/GSFC Planetary Boundary Layer Science Task Group and expanded on previous efforts by considerably increasing the statistical robustness of the performance simulations and extending the statistics to include those of aerosol backscatter and extinction measurements. Further work that is currently being conducted includes Observing Systems Simulation Experiments to assess the impact of a thermodynamics lidar on global forecast improvement.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and satellite constellations are both essential Earth Observation (EO) systems for monitoring land surface dynamics. The former is frequently used for its acquisition flexibility and its ability to supply imagery with very high spatial resolution (VHSR); the latter is interesting for supplying time-series data over large areas. However, each of these data sources is generally used separately even though they are complementary and have strong and promising potential synergies. Data fusion is a well-known technique to exploit this multi-source synergy, but in practice, UAV and satellite synergies are more specific, less well known and need to be formalized. In this article, we review remote sensing studies that addressed both data sources. Current approaches were categorized to distinguish four strategies: “data comparison”, “multiscale explanation”, “model calibration” and “data fusion”. Analysis of the literature revealed emerging trends, the supply of these distinct strategies for several applications and allowed to identify key contributions of UAV data. Finally, the high potential of this synergy seems currently under-exploited; therefore a discussion is proposed about the related implications for data interoperability, machine learning and data sharing to reinforce synergies between UAVs and satellites.

This study proposes a novel miniaturized circularly polarized (CP) ultrahigh frequency (UHF) quadrifilar helix antenna for spaceborne applications. The dual‐band operation is realized using four inverted‐U shaped helical strips (IUSHSs) that are rotated and alternately arranged on the four faces of a hollow polyimide cuboid in a sequential rotation manner, which effectively reduces the size of the antenna. Furthermore, the four IUSHSs are connected by a cross‐shape strip at the top of the antenna to control the dual resonant frequencies, resulting in a small dual‐band frequency ratio. The proposed antenna is both lightweight and robust when compared with the conventional miniaturized CP antennas operating at similar bands with similar performance. In particular, its compact radiator provides effective miniaturized spaceborne solution without the need of high‐dielectric coefficient materials. A device for spaceborne application that operates at 402/505 MHz is designed, fabricated, measured, and in‐orbit tested with a weight of 651 g and an effective size of 0.161 × 0.161 × 0.228 λ3402MHz (λ402MHz is the wavelength at 402 MHz). The measured gain and axial ratio of the proposed antenna are better than 5.32 dBi and 2.18 dB, respectively, within 2 and 12 MHz bandwidth for the two bands. In this letter, we propose a scattered-wave deceptive jamming approach using a frequency diverse array (FDA) radar against spaceborne synthetic aperture radars (SARs). As an emerging array radar, FDA transmits multiple carrier frequencies across its elements, and thus, a multiple deceptive jamming is potentially produced in the range dimension of the SAR image. Moreover, we consider the scattered-wave jamming, since it has low complexity when used to create spurious scenes and control the jammer locations. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulations show that the scattered-wave jamming with FDA can generate multiple fake targets with the number of targets being dependent on the number of FDA carrier frequencies. A novel very‐high frequency (VHF) band spaceborne phased antenna array for satellite‐automatic identification system/VHF data exchange (SAT‐AIS/VDE) applications operating at 159 MHz is proposed in this letter. Element phase shifting is achieved by controlling each element mechanical rotation angle rather than the phase shifter behind each element. Thanks to the new working scheme, the proposed array shows several advantages over its former counterpart, including low cost, high power capacity, and broad phase‐shifting bandwidth. This letter explains the basic principle, and presents a preliminary study on element rotation angle controlled phased antenna array technology, and an eight‐element‐array which is implemented on solar panel supporting plate is designed to validate the concept. Silicon (Si) single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays sensitive to the 400- to 900-nm wavelength range have been studied for a number of uses due to their high detection efficiency; zero readout noise; low timing jitter; mechanical robustness; low-voltage (< 50 V) operation; mass producibility; and low size, weight, power, and cost. As with all solid-state detectors, however, they are susceptible to damage by radiation, with displacement damage by energetic particles being the primary concern for many applications. This article reports the results of low-dose-rate neutron irradiation from an americium–beryllium (AmBe) source on a 256×256 array of 10-μm active diameter SPADs, each with live recording of their dark count rate (DCR), up to a cumulative displacement damage dose equivalent to that delivered by a 1-MeV neutron fluence of 5.69 ⋅ 109 cm−2 in Si (11.59 TeV/g). A small fraction (~2.57%) of the SPADs in the array experienced a significant step increase in their DCR, which we ascribe to displacement damage. The remainder experienced a far more gradual and subdued increase. For this reason, an operational concept for SPAD arrays, whereby SPADs that begin to exhibit a step increase in DCR are disabled, should significantly extend the useful performance of such arrays in radiation environments. NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is a spaceborne lidar mission which will produce near global (51.6°S to 51.6°N) maps of forest structure and above‐ground biomass density during its 2‐year mission. GEDI uses a waveform simulator for calibration of algorithms and assessing mission accuracy. This paper implements a waveform simulator, using the method proposed in Blair and Hofton (1999; https://doi.org/10.1029/1999GL010484), and builds upon that work by adding instrument noise and by validating simulated waveforms across a range of forest types, airborne laser scanning (ALS) instruments, and survey configurations. The simulator was validated by comparing waveform metrics derived from simulated waveforms against those derived from observed large‐footprint, full‐waveform lidar data from NASA's airborne Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor (LVIS). The simulator was found to produce waveform metrics with a mean bias of less than 0.22 m and a root‐mean‐square error of less than 5.7 m, as long as the ALS data had sufficient pulse density. The minimum pulse density required depended upon the instrument. Measurement errors due to instrument noise predicted by the simulator were within 1.5 m of those from observed waveforms and 70–85% of variance in measurement error was explained. Changing the ALS survey configuration had no significant impact on simulated metrics, suggesting that the ALS pulse density is a sufficient metric of simulator accuracy across the range of conditions and instruments tested. These results give confidence in the use of the simulator for the pre‐launch calibration and performance assessment of the GEDI mission. The coastal zone offers among the world’s most productive and valuable ecosystems and is experiencing increasing pressure from anthropogenic impacts: human settlements, agriculture, aquaculture, trade, industrial activities, oil and gas exploitation and tourism. Earth observation has great capability to deliver valuable data at the local, regional and global scales and can support the assessment and monitoring of land- and water-related applications in coastal zones. Compared to optical satellites, cloud-cover does not limit the timeliness of data acquisition with spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors, which have all-weather, day and night capabilities. Hence, active radar systems demonstrate great potential for continuous mapping and monitoring of coastal regions, particularly in cloud-prone tropical and sub-tropical climates. The canopy penetration capability with long radar wavelength enables L-band SAR data to be used for coastal terrestrial environments and has been widely applied and investigated for the following geoscientific topics: mapping and monitoring of flooded vegetation and inundated areas; the retrieval of aboveground biomass; and the estimation of soil moisture. Human activities, global population growth, urban sprawl and climate change-induced impacts are leading to increased pressure on coastal ecosystems causing land degradation, deforestation and land use change. This review presents a comprehensive overview of existing research articles that apply spaceborne L-band SAR data for geoscientific analyses that are relevant for coastal land applications.

This paper describes an automatic mosaicking algorithm for creating large-scale mosaic maps of forest height. In contrast to existing mosaicking approaches through using SAR backscatter power and/or InSAR phase, this paper utilizes the forest height estimates that are inverted from spaceborne repeat-pass cross-pol InSAR correlation magnitude. By using repeat-pass InSAR correlation measurements that are dominated by temporal decorrelation, it has been shown that a simplified inversion approach can be utilized to create a height-sensitive measure over the whole interferometric scene, where two scene-wide fitting parameters are able to characterize the mean behavior of the random motion and dielectric changes of the volume scatterers within the scene. In order to combine these single-scene results into a mosaic, a matrix formulation is used with nonlinear least squares and observations in adjacent-scene overlap areas to create a self-consistent estimate of forest height over the larger region. This automated mosaicking method has the benefit of suppressing the global fitting error and, thus, mitigating the “wallpapering” problem in the manual mosaicking process. The algorithm is validated over the U.S. state of Maine by using InSAR correlation magnitude data from ALOS/PALSAR and comparing the inverted forest height with Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor (LVIS) height and National Biomass and Carbon Dataset (NBCD) basal area weighted (BAW) height. This paper serves as a companion work to previously demonstrated results, the combination of which is meant to be an observational prototype for NASA’s DESDynI-R (now called NISAR) and JAXA’s ALOS-2 satellite missions.

In order to study forests at the global scale, a detailed link budget for a lidar system onboard satellite is presented. It is based on an original approach coupling airborne lidar observations and an end-to-end simulator. The simulator is initialized by airborne lidar measurements performed over temperate and tropical forests on the French territory, representing a wide range of forests ecosystems. Considering two complementary wavelengths of 355 and 1064 nm, the end-to-end simulator computes the performance of spaceborne lidar systems for different orbits. The analysis is based on forest structural (tree top height, quadratic mean canopy height) and optical (forest optical thickness) parameters. Although an ultraviolet lidar appears to be a good candidate for airborne measurements, our results show that the limited energy is not favorable for spaceborne missions with such a wavelength. A near infrared wavelength at 1064 nm is preferable, requiring ~100 mJ laser emitted energy, which is in agreement with current and future spaceborne missions involving a lidar. We find that the signal-to-noise ratio at the ground level to extract both the structural and optical parameters of forests must be larger than 10. Hence, considering the presence of clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere and assuming a stationary forest, a good detection probability of 99% can be reached when 4 or 5 satellite revisits are considered for a lidar system onboard the ISS or ICESat, respectively. This concerns ~90% of forest covers observed from the lidar, which have an optical thickness less than 3.

Satellite-based estimates of vegetation structure capture broad-scale vegetation characteristics as well as differences in vegetation structure at plot-scales. Active remote sensing from laser altimetry and radar systems is regularly used to measure vegetation height and infer vegetation structural attributes, however, the current uncertainty of their spaceborne measurements is likely to mask actual plot-scale differences in vertical structures in sparse forests. In the taiga (boreal forest)—tundra ecotone (TTE) the accumulated effect of subtle plot-scale differences in vegetation height across broad-scales may be significant. This paper examines the uncertainty of plot-scale forest canopy height measurements in northern Siberia Larix stands by combining complementary canopy surface elevations derived from satellite photogrammetry and ground elevations derived from the Geosciences Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) from the ICESat-1 satellite. With a linear model, spaceborne-derived canopy height measurements at the plot-scale predicted TTE stand height ~5 m–~10 m tall (R2 = 0.55, bootstrapped 95% confidence interval of R2 = 0.36–0.74) with an uncertainty ranging from ±0.86 m–1.37 m. A larger sample may mitigate the broad uncertainty of the model fit, however, the methodology provides a means for capturing plot-scale canopy height and its uncertainty from spaceborne data at GLAS footprints in sparse TTE forests and may serve as a basis for scaling up plot-level TTE vegetation height measurements to forest patches.

Lichen woodlands (LW) are sparse forests that cover extensive areas in remote subarctic regions where warming due to climate change is fastest. They are difficult to study in situ or with airborne remote sensing due to their remoteness. We have tested a method for measuring individual tree heights and predicting basal area at tree and plot levels using WorldView-3 stereo images. Manual stereo measurements of tree heights were performed on short trees (2⁻12 m) of a LW region of Canada with a residual standard error of ≈0.9 m compared to accurate field or UAV height data. The number of detected trees significantly underestimated field counts, especially in peatlands in which the visual contrast between trees and ground cover was low. The heights measured from the WorldView-3 images were used to predict the basal area at individual tree level and summed up at plot level. In the best conditions (high contrast between trees and ground cover), the relationship to field basal area had a R2 of 0.79. Accurate estimates of above ground biomass should therefore also be possible. This method could be used to calibrate an extensive remote sensing approach without in-situ measurements, e.g., by linking precise structural data to ICESAT-2 footprints.

Spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) has been the research focus of Earth observation because of its unique advantages; however, there are still many challenges to be resolved. The reduction of the impact of the satellite motion on the GNSS-R waveform is the one of key technologies for spaceborne GNSS-R. The proposed delay retracking methods in existing literatures require too many instrument resources and too much priori information to refresh correlation window on each coherent integration time period. This paper aims to propose an on-ground alternative in which less frequency tracking refresh on board is needed. The model of dynamic delay waveform, which is expressed as the convolution of the pure waveform and the point spread function, are described. Based on this, the new methodology, which utilizes the least squares fitting to make the residual error between the dynamic model and measured waveform minimum, is employed to reconstruct the pure waveform. The validity of proposed method is verified using UK-DMC, UK-TDS-1 and simulated data. Moreover, the performances of sea surface height and wind speed retrieval using retracked and non-retracked waveforms are compared. The results show that (1) the MSEs between aligned and retracked waveform reduce to 0.026 and 0.044 from 0.110 and 0.156 between aligned and non-retracked waveform with the TRP of 1 s and 3 s for UK-DMC data, and for UK-TDS-1 data, the MSEs decrease from 161.02 and 227.34 to 70.10 and 61.80; (2) the standard deviation of sea surface height using retracked waveform is lower 5 times than the one using non-retracked waveform; (3) the retracked waveform could lead to a better measurement performance in wind speed retrieval. Finally, the relationship between the performance of retracking and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) is analyzed. Flood management consists many aspects such as hazard assessment, vulnerability assessment, exposure assessment, risk assessment, early warning system, damage assessment as well as risk mitigation planning. Conventional flood management are depending on the ground based monitoring of rainfall and river discharge. Many parts of the world are not covered by these sensor networks in one hand and these ground based systems are costly. Most of the tropical countries have high flood risk and low financial and institutional capacity to afford ground based system. While conventional flood management is time and cost intensive, spaceborne remote sensing provides timely and low-cost data in comparison to field observation, and is the obvious choice for most developing countries affected by flooding. Many aspects of flood management are being aided with the advancement of remote sensing technology. More precise and near real time flood detection, lead time in flood early warning system, accurate and advance inputs of hydrological models are now blessed by space technology. Many methods and approaches have been developed to overcome the constrains in the application of spaceborne remote sensing in flood management. Application of satellite remote sensing in flood hazard assessment is well documented, however, the application of space technology in other aspects of the flood management is also promising. The availability of accurate trajectory information is paramount for the processing and exploitation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. Considering the particular case of spaceborne SARs designed for repeat-pass interferometric applications, errors in the trajectory translate into phase artifacts that affect the interferometric performance. In this paper, we propose a model-based procedure to calibrate the trajectories of spaceborne SAR systems by the multisquint (MS) phase. The technique allows to estimate the along and the derivative of across track geometric errors. The geometric model of the InSAR phase is derived as a function of positioning errors and the MS phase model as derivative of the InSAR phase geometric model, with respect to the squint angle. We perform a sensitivity analysis of the model in order to define which geometric errors can be estimated by the MS phase, justifying the assumption that the MS phase is very poorly affected by the atmospheric phase screen. We particularly concentrate on the TOPSAR acquisition mode, where the phase is very sensitive to geometric errors. We start from the classical two-image case and then consider the extension to the multibaseline case. This paper investigates the abnormal phenomenon of local blackening of the internal circuit substrate caused by low-pressure discharge in the thermal vacuum test of an L-band high-power pulsed solid-state power amplifier for satellite use, i.e., the residual flux inside the product volatilizes under vacuum conditions. Thus, the low-pressure discharge causes a rise in local temperature, and under high local temperature, the silicone rubber is thermally decomposed. There are four proposed engineering improvements, which are proved to be feasible and effective through simulation and re-test verification.
