Due to the intermittent nature of solar radiation, phase change materials are excellent options for use in several types of solar energy systems. This overview of the relevant literature thoroughly discusses the applications of phase change materials, including solar collectors, solar stills, solar ponds, solar air heaters, and solar chimneys. Despite the complexity of their availability and high costs, phase change materials are utilized in the majority of solar energy techniques because of the considerable technical improvements they provide. While numerous studies have investigated the progress of phase change materials used in solar energy applications such as photovoltaic systems, it is vital to understand the conceptual knowledge of employing phase change materials in various types of solar thermal energy systems. Investigations into the use of phase change materials in solar applications for the purpose of storing thermal energy are still being carried out to upgrade the overall performance. This paper briefly reviews recently published studies between 2016 and 2023 that utilized phase change materials as thermal energy storage in different solar energy systems by collecting more than 74 examples from the open literature. This study focuses on demonstrating the maturity of phase change materials and their integration into solar energy applications. Based on the findings, proposals for new research projects are made. A number of free computer applications exist for designing solar power systems and predicting their performance. Among the various tools, three reputable ones were used while assessing different solar energy technologies; these were either the concentrated solar power (CSP) type or the photovoltaic (PV) type. Various types of digital data, including computer modeling files, tabulated values, and illustrative views for simulations conducted by the desktop software program Energy3D (by the Concord Consortium) for analyzing solar systems are described and made publicly accessible by the author. Thus, the interested reader can reproduce or customize simulations. The modeled solar power systems include solar farms with a fixed or moving array of panels, linear Fresnel reflectors, parabolic troughs, parabolic dishes, and solar towers. Supporting benchmarking data are also included, which are prediction reports for three PV systems using the cloud-based application PVGIS (Photovoltaic Geographical Information System), developed by the European Commission Joint Research Center (JRC). These PV systems are related to three systems modeled via Energy3D, and thus help in validation. Another set of benchmarking data comes from another cloud-based application for PV systems, which is PVWatts, provided by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the United States Department of Energy (DoE). This paper describes data used in the analysis as guiding examples, giving an opportunity for gaining knowledge and skills in the research areas of solar energy science and technology. It also briefly discusses a fourth free solar energy tool, 'Aladdin' (by the Institute for Future Intelligence), which possesses artificial intelligence capabilities. This research intends to identify influential factors in adopting and diffusing solar energy technology (SET) by micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in two tehsils of Multan district in Pakistan's Punjab province. To this end, the influential factors are identified through studying literature surveys and conducting questionnaires. Following that, partial least squares-based path modeling is employed. The results showed that (1) enterprises' size, perceived SET's ease of use, and perceived SET's reliability are the top three driving factors. (2) The perceived SET's price, perceived level of competition's pressure, and MSME's energy cost intensity are the barriers to the adoption and diffusion of SET, while the lack of technical knowledge about SET is a neutral factor. (3) Perceived SET's price, MSMEs' energy cost intensity, and enterprises' size are among the most important factors based on the effect size and path coefficients, while the lack of technical knowledge about SET, preferences of MSMEs' customers, and eco-labels and green stickers have lower importance. Since the adoption of SET is a rational decision that is concretely dependent on economic incentives, it is recommended to lower the price of SET to scale up the adoption and diffusion of SET by Pakistani MSMEs. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) play a significant role in the development of affordable, safe, and efficient solar energy technology. In this research, we have designed nine new dyes (J01-09) by modifying an experimentally reported thiophene-based dye (DSS) in the literature. The diethylaniline in the DSS as the electron donating group was replaced with diphenylamine to reduce planarity in the dye. The designed dyes all have donor and acceptor groups linked by a π-linker group (D-π-A). Using DFT and TD-DFT, we investigated the impact of the diphenylamine moieties on the planarity, photochemical and photophysical properties of the modeled dyes in isolation. The optimized structures, UV–Vis absorption, photochemical, and photovoltaic parameters were computed to study the photosensitizing capability of the modeled dyes. The photochemical and photovoltaic parameters of the study include; open-circuit voltage (V OC), light-harvesting efficiency (LHE), driving force of electron injection (ΔGinj), driving force of regeneration (ΔGreg), excited-state lifetime (τ), ionization potential (IP), adiabatic ionization potential (AIP), vertical ionization potential (VIP), electron affinity (EA), chemical hardness (η), electrophilicity index (ω), electron-donating power (ω-) and electron-accepting power (ω+) were calculated. Our findings indicate that only J03 and J08 absorb at longer wavelengths (719 and 753 nm respectively) indicating lower absorption energy bandgap compared to the DSS dye, attributed to the extension of conjugation between the thiophene and donor groups. Also, only J03 and J08 exhibited lower ΔGinj values (−0.985 and −0.667 eV respectively) and ΔGreg values (0.245 and 0.179 eV respectively) implying the dyes can be regenerated spontaneously compared to the DSS dye. Green telecommunication tower primarily depends on renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. This study presents a power consumption model to estimate the load demand of a telecommunication tower (TT) to improve energy efficiency. The method is based on field measurements of realtime data traffic load of the entire operated macrocell telecommunication tower to balance power supply and energy demand. This advanced method is investigated using HOMER Pro simulation and compared with a widely accepted technique called overall peak load method for a chosen case study. The comparison simulation results showed that by using the power consumption model method, the energy-saving efficiency at the TT is improved by 24.19% and the size of the overall system is decreased by 33.33%. Consequently, the annualized cost is reduced by 25.7%. This optimum performance contributes to the effective development of green telecommunication towers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scholars in science and technology studies have debated the various ways in which technologies are (or are not) political. Here, I examine how users themselves understand and articulate the politics of a specific technology—residential solar electric technology—and how understandings of politics interact with motivations to adopt. Based on interviews with 48 individuals in 36 households across the state of Wisconsin who have adopted residential solar electric technology, I consider the user’s perspective on the question: “What’s political about residential solar electric technology use?” These users were asked about the politics of this technology and how their understanding of the technology’s politics shaped their own motivation for adoption. These solar electric technology adopters saw solar electric technology as both imbued with political character based on the current national political scene and as inherently, innately political. They described how solar electric technology interacts with the politics of environmentalism, challenges “politics-as-usual” and can bring about decentralization and redistribution of wealth. In short, to the users of solar electric technology, this technological artifact is, indeed, political; it both interacts with, and offers an alternative to, current American political structures. Further, their perspectives on the politics of solar technology shaped their understandings of motivations for and limitations to adoption of this alternative technology.

In this paper, the contrasting theories of metabolic rift and ecological modernization theory (EMT) are applied to the same empirical phenomenon. Metabolic rift argues that the natural metabolic relationship between humans and nature has been fractured through modernization, industrialization and urbanization. EMT, in contrast, argues that societies in an advanced state of industrialization adopt ecologically benign production technologies and political policies, suggesting that modern societies could be on course to alleviate the ecological damage caused by capitalism. These two theories are fundamentally different in their assumptions about modern economies and technologies, yet both can be used as a theoretical lens to examine the phenomenon of solar energy technology adoption. Furthermore, both theories shed light on the increasing adoption of solar energy technologies in both “developing” and “developed” regions and the potential social conditions for promoting renewable energy technology adoption.

Solar energy is one of the cleanest forms of energy sources and considered as a green source of energy. Solar energy benefit ranges from low carbon emission, no fossil fuel requirement, long term solar resources, less payback time and other. However like other power generation sources, solar energy has also some Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) concerns. This paper presents the overview of solar energy technologies and addresses the SHE impact of solar energy technologies to the sustainability of human activities. • A novel enhanced MPA algorithm has been proposed for effective PV modelling. • Static and dynamic PV model parameters have been estimated. • The estimated parameters have been validated via experimental data-sets. • The statistical analysis has been performed for effectiveness of the EMPA method. • The results confirm the EMPA efficiency comparing with state-of-the-art algorithms. Providing an accurate and precise photovoltaic model is a vital stage prior to the system design, therefore, this paper proposes a novel algorithm, enhanced marine predators algorithm (EMPA), to identify the unknown parameters for different photovoltaic (PV) models including the static PV models (single-diode and double-diode) and dynamic PV model. In the proposed EMPA, the differential evolution operator (DE) is incorporated into the original marine predators algorithm (MPA) to achieve stable, and reliable performance while handling that nonlinear optimization problem of PV modeling. Three different real datasets are used to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. In the first case study, the proposed algorithm is used to identify the unknown parameters of a single-diode and double-diode PV models. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) and standard deviation (STD) values for a single-diode are 7.7301 e - 04 and 5.9135 e - 07 . Similarly for double diode are 7.4396 e - 04 and 3.1849 e - 05 , respectively. In addition, the second case study is used to test the proposed model in identifying the unknown parameters of a double-diode PV model. Here, the proposed algorithm is compared with classical MPA in five scenarios at different operating conditions. In this case study, the RMSE and STD of the proposed algorithm are less than that obtained by the MPA algorithm. Moreover, the third case study is utilized to test the ability of the proposed model in identifying the parameters of a dynamic PV model. In this case study, the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the one obtained by MAP and heterogeneous comprehensive learning particle swarm optimization (HCLPSO) algorithms in terms of RMSE ± STD. The obtained value of RMSE ± STD by the proposed algorithm is 0.0084505 ± 1.0971 e - 17 , which is too small compared with that obtained by MPA and HCLPSO algorithms (0.0084505 ± 9.6235 e - 14 and 0.0084505 ± 2.5235 e - 9). The results show the proposed model's superiority over the MPA and other recent proposed algorithms in data fitting, convergence rate, stability, and consistency. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can be considered as a fast, feasible, and a reliable optimization algorithm to identify the unknown parameters in static and dynamic PV models. This paper aims to provide an overview of the innovation and evolution of global solar energy technology (SET) and further analyze the driving forces. It addresses the evolution from a longitudinal perspective throughout more than 150 years, and discusses the multiple and interactive driving forces in the process of SET innovation. Our study encompasses three theories, including demand-driven theory, science advancement and technology catch-up theory. We retrieve patent data from PatSnap, a global patent platform, and obtain 313,530 hits in total worldwide, published from 1867 to 2018. Through employing the functions of cell diagram analysis and geographic territory mapping embedded in PatSnap platform, we conduct a relatively comprehensive analysis of SET evolution. Results disclose that the evolutionary trajectory analysis of SET reveals different characteristics in different stages, which involves spatial, main companies, IPCs and hot topics evolution, etc.. Multiple interactive driving forces play a significant role in various development phases.
