The social discourse against feminism has become broader and more explicit. This is generating a controversy that is taking shape in various spheres. Our research shows this controversy by analyzing comments made on digital versions of newspapers about a gift awarded to female squash players at a tournament in the north of Spain in 2019, which included a vibrator, an electric foot file, and hair removal wax. From forty headlines in Spanish, Latin-American and British newspapers, the obtained data set were 1,279 comments. Using a thematic analysis, the comments were classified in six subthemes: gender, offense, politics, patriarchal sexuality, context, and sponsor. The subthemes were grouped in three themes: new misogyny, sexist outrage and corporate advocacy. Two conflicting discourses, both based on two opposites men/women, equality/discrimination, show the social and political conflict in Spanish society. However, the sponsoring company is not questioned. Gender appears as a performative act whose reproduction maintains a tense relationship between what is presented as two different images of women: real/normal versus feminist. Results indicate that the comments reflect deep-rooted attitudes about gender and power, using ambivalent sexism and anti-feminist rhetoric to maintain the status quo, and how corporate sponsorship is presented as a justification mechanism. The debate focuses on the social discourse that pits the feminist model against the patriarchal one, understood as an epistemological stance. From the so-called new misogyny, which presents men as discriminated against, a false parallelism is used that misrepresents the concept of equality, accepts a pre-discursive order on women’s sexuality and neoliberalism through the defence of the corporate market.

Our study explores aspects of human conversation within the framework of evolutionary psychology, focusing on the proportion of ‘social’ to ‘non-social’ content in casual conversation. Building upon the seminal study by Dunbar et al. (1997, Human Nature, 8, 231–246), which posited that two-thirds of conversation gravitates around social matters, our findings indicate an even larger portion, approximately 85% being of a social nature. Additionally, we provide a nuanced categorisation of ‘social’ rooted in the principles of evolutionary psychology. Similarly to Dunbar et al.’s findings, our results support theories of human evolution that highlight the importance of social interactions and information exchange and the importance of the exchange of social information in human interactions across various contexts.

Mass cinema can act as a powerful tool for influencing public opinion by appealing to shared values and collective historical memory, while simultaneously constructing and guiding these elements in alignment with policy objectives. This article explores the thesis that national cinema, as an element of a common cultural code, plays a significant role in the formation and reinforcement of collective (socio-cultural) identity. Specifically, it examines the significance of Brussels' efforts to cultivate a robust film industry as part of the European Union's strategy for constructing a collective identity.The authors test the hypothesis that cinema serves as a medium for fostering a sense of belonging and emotional connection among EU citizens. To this end, the study aims to uncover the specific mechanisms by which common historical and social narratives are conveyed through European Union cinema. The research methodology is grounded in a structuralist perspective on cinema (P. Wallen, C. Metz).The article analyzes how the EU has intensified its institutional support and promotion of European cinema, particularly in response to the «crisis of ideas» in Hollywood, which has left a void in the global film market. This analysis is contextualized within the broader sociopolitical landscape, including the rising popularity of mass cinema during the pandemic and the heightened urgency for strengthening EU collective identity amid the Ukrainian crisis and the initiation of a special military operation.The findings indicate that the EU is increasingly leveraging the film industry to disseminate narratives, ideas, and values critical for both situational objectives – such as consolidating public opinion on specific political issues (illustrated by the «militarization» of the film market in response to the 2022 military operation) – and long-term goals of fortifying the EU's collective identity. However, the long-term efficacy of cinema in shaping public opinion is constrained by its susceptibility to rapid trend shifts driven by audience preferences.

This study discussed strategies of humour in Adébáyọ̀ Àkàndé Fálétí’s writings. It interrogates how humour as a universal human interactional phenomenon is used to particularly entertain, checkmate human excesses and chastise societal ills in a mild manner. It is noted that among the living things only human beings laugh and humour excites laughter but it is not every humour that leads to laughter. Therefore, for humour to be effectively appreciated, it must be properly situated in its social context. The theoretical framework for this study is based on Thomas Veatch postulation of humour as a phenomenon made up of congruous and incongruous elements of socially typical and infringement of the prejudiced ethical standard. This framework is adopted to study Faleti’s use of humour to entertain, criticize human actions and chastise societal ills. It was out that humour as a form of lampoon is used euphemistically or ironically not as a means to destroy the society but to improve it. Faleti uses humour as an effective weapon of criticism and a subtle source of laughter to entertain the audience and to curb aberrations in the society. Humour in Faleti’s writings is used in a calm and amusing manner and the end result is laughter, although beneath the laughter is the lampoon of social misdemeanours concealed in the use of light-hearted constructions. Faleti has succeeded in espousing various methods of coping with serious and tense situation through the use of strategies of humour.

In the interview he gave to Marianne Doury and Théophile Robineau, Marc Angenot discusses the place of rhetoric in his work. Recalling that ancient rhetoric was essentially based on the judicial model, he emphasizes its interest, but also its limitations, in exploring the social discourse he seeks to account for. He takes up its global perspective, mobilizing ethos, pathos and logos, the combined consideration of which is necessary for an understanding of ideas and the way in which they are carried and discussed in society. But he insists on the necessity of taking account of the fact that social discourse is embedded in a more or less long-term history, which is a prerequisite for its intelligibility. Taking social discourse as the object of research also requires us to reconsider the notion of situation as traditionally understood in rhetoric, and to redefine the way we look at the question of persuasion.

Societies undergo constant change, manifested in various ways such as technological developments, economic transitions, reorganization of cultural values and beliefs, or changes in social structures. Individuals play an active role in shaping social and societal change by interactively negotiating its manifestation. However, this shaping of change is seldom harmonious; instead, it is often characterized by dissent and conflict. This special section gathers a collection of articles concerned with the role of attitude–identity dynamics in contexts of contemporary conflict and change. The corpus of research that builds this special section describes mutual impacts of attitudes and identities, explores different actors in social debates and covers a wide range of both established and innovative research methodology. Man's discernments or perspectives about the truth are molded and formed by the language in which they are communicated. In this way, our insight into ethical quality is communicated in the language we use. This paper looks at the interrelatedness of language and ethical quality utilizing the lattice of Gabriel Okara's 'The Voice'. It investigates the connection among language and ethical quality, and how they highlight in the genuine situation. It uses the technique for literary examination and hermeneutic phenomenology in doing the exploration. It presumes that language and profound quality are indivisibly bound together. It suggests a reappraisal of Okara's origination of language and profound quality inside the structure of African morals. Past linguistic examinations on Gabriel Okara's 'The Voice' have focused on the trial procedure of literal interpretation which the creator embraced in the message, in light of the waiting issue of language in African writing. This article examines discourses that shaped different outcomes for Yemeni refugees in 2018 and Afghan special contributors in 2021 in South Korea. Following the country’s mission to evacuate its Afghan interlocutors in 2021, Afghans are fast‐tracked for social integration through the creation of emergency enforcement ordinances, with South Korean society broadly welcoming them as national heroes and recognizing them as “special contributors” rather than refugees. In contrast, Yemeni refugees arriving in 2018 were subjected to Islamophobic and legal abuse, constructed as potential sex offenders and terrorists, and accused of being fake refugees. In both cases, refugee protections according to South Korea’s 2013 Refugee Law were withheld as Yemenis and Afghans were processed through alternative systems. This article concludes that Muslim refugee issues in South Korea are masculinized and delves into the multi‐faceted complex factors at play when analyzing the differences between the reception of Afghan evacuees and Yemeni refugees in the South Korean context.

Studies on suicide and the Internet emerged only a decade ago, and those on suicidal behaviors and social media are even more recent. Until today, all the benefits and harms related to the use of social networks and suicidal behaviors in adolescence are not fully known. However, the prevailing presence of social networks in youth life is promoting the development of strategies based on their use, for the intervention, detection, and prevention of suicide. The online presentation of suicidal behaviors is a sign of the importance of this phenomenon and the need to take care of it, considering that in the scientific literature there is little analysis of the relationship between suicidality and social networks. Therefore, it is necessary to explore all the possibilities offered by social networks to detect the factors involved in suicidal behavior. This work consists of an exploratory analysis of social discourse on Twitter based on three categories associated with suicidal behavior, for descriptive, preventive, and comparative purposes, between two samples of adolescents: Italian and Spanish. The extracted results show a greater number of both prosuicide and instigator tweets in the Italian sample, compared to the Spanish one, while the Spanish sample exceeds the Italian one in terms of anti-suicide tweets. It is suggested to keep on researching the useful responses to online communications from adolescents and into other possibilities offered by social media platforms in the analysis of youth suicide. The dynamics of hate crime have changed as a result of digital media. The emergence of cyberhate waves is one of the manifestations of cyberspace within the context of hate crime. The purpose of this study is to present a social discussion about cyberhate in Indonesia as a sign of the transition from hatred to crime. A qualitative approach is used in this study. These diverse backgrounds serve as the foundation for this study, which aims to investigate the typology of cyber haters in Indonesia, particularly how perpetrators undergo transformation. In other words, the reconstruction of this research problem's background is rooted in the evolution of hate crime, which has undergone changes and encroachments on digital platforms. Cyber haters are one of the slices of the Indonesian study of cyber crime that has not received a special portion. Aside from that, the socio-political context of society influences the dynamics of cyber haters in Indonesia. The internalization of prejudice experienced by perpetrators and its implementation in supportive situations and conditions are inextricably linked to the escalation of cyber hate. Because different types of data are not only part of how social processes are built in qualitative research, but they are also artifacts. Opportunities to access data in greater depth are unique features found in the analysis of cyber haters in Indonesia. The three formulations of the problem indicate that cyber hate is a type of power imbalance that has the potential to cause differences in the definition of crime. This study explores adolescents' subjective experiences when facing body measurements at school, performed to evaluate the effects of a school-based intervention to promote physical activity. Three semi-structured interviews (n = 3) and two focus groups (n = 7 and 3) were conducted with adolescents after measuring some variables related to their weight and adiposity. Observational data (n = 88) collected by the two researchers in charge of the measurements were also obtained. Findings derived from our thematic analysis question the suitability of body measurements as social contexts where the core ideas of healthism emerge. Some adolescents lived body measurements as negative social experiences, promoting body dissatisfaction, social comparison, embarrassment, and simplistic associations between health and body shape, which could hinder their adherence to healthy habits. We emphasize the role of qualitative research when evaluating pre/posttests of school-based intervention studies, not just the interventions themselves, to generate knowledge to improve research protocols and prevent unwanted psychological outcomes in participants. The aim of this article is to explore social discourse on "green" consumption in Spain by analysing how guilt and logic of practice are involved in this type of consumption from a psycho-sociological perspective. The empirical work was qualitative: we analysed 14 focus groups and nine interviews with "green" and "non-green" consumers from different social backgrounds. The results show that "green" consumption involves a dual process of social differentiation and guilt, especially in "greener" consumers from middle and middle-upper class social backgrounds, whose discourse is developed in socio-environmental terms. Religious theological views alter continuously with the context and dynamics of social change. The emergence of digital media and the flow of information has caused a change in the theological views on religious truths and their validation ways. Therefore, this research aimed to explore the theological views and practices of converts in Indonesia who are committed to disseminating validated the Qur'an-Bible relationship in social media as a consequence of their Islamic beliefs. The influence of context and social dynamics on religious theological views was explored by obtaining data through media observations and in-depth interviews with three popular converts on social media, namely Ahmad Kainama, drg. Carissa Grani, and Teressia Pardede. Subsequently, this research concluded that converts to religious theology in Indonesia focus on three basic views, 1) Converts considered Islam as a universal religion and the faith of all prophets and apostles, as Jesus, Moses, and all the bearers of religion in the world are Muslims, 2) Convert judges a historical distortion about Islam and Christianity, 3) Convert claims there is a misinterpretation in understanding Islam and Christianity. This also provided an overview of the impacts that arise due to theological validation in social-religious life by Indonesian converts on social media. This information is expected to contribute to future research as a theoretical-empirical-phenomenological basis about converts and their theological views on social media for the development of relevant investigations.

The research explored the social discourse of fake news in the French language and the French government’s efforts to overcome it with digital media literacy through social media. Fake news was getting more intense with the existence of social media as an instrument of dissemination. The fake news data were observed first, then selected according to the intensity of its distribution, and taken through social media platforms with the most users in France, namely Facebook and Twitter. Then this data set was verified and confirmed through the official fact-checking platform to ensure that the data text was fake news. This data verification method also practiced techniques socialized by the French government through a digital media literacy program. All data were analyzed qualitatively using a critical paradigm, particularly critical sociolinguistics, and post-truth theory. The analysis results show a relationship between language practice through fake news texts circulating on social media and the practice of government propaganda discourse through digital media literacy. These two practices also give rise to certain social practices and movements in French society. This also shows that digital media literacy efforts alone are ineffective enough to overcome the problems caused by fake news in society.

Grassroots social movements have been a factor in shaping history around the world by triggering discourse around important issues. It can be a critical element of urban development and planning. Calgary is no exception and has a history of creating civic discourse and engagement. CivicCamp Calgary was a public advocacy group started in 2009 by several community members interested in engaging citizens with concerns and desires in Calgary’s development. Major CivicCamp proponents included Mayor Naheed Nenshi (City of Calgary mayor, first elected in 2010), former City of Calgary Head of Planning Department Richard Parker, Sustainable Calgary founder Noel Keough, and many more. It all began during the City of Calgary’s Plan-It initiative, a city-wide initiative to map out long term growth and development for Calgary. The group held an event known as an “unconference” where community members could provide their feedback on different topics around the built environment. This article is documenting information regarding the CivicCamp Calgary movement—which ended in 2015—based on a series of recorded interviews with the proponents to understand and learn from the experience. Civic discourse and grassroots movements such as this are a key component to shaping the built environment and understanding past experiences can inform future processes and approach in Calgary. The topic of migration is often used by populist and non-populist politicians in order to arouse emotions, polarise social attitudes and thus mobilise voters. The present study aims to identify themes (a cognitive aspect of attitudes) and discrete emotions (an emotional aspect of attitudes) in online social discourse as a reaction to the media posts of the main Slovak political parties on the topic of migration in the pre-election period (January-February 2020). Methodological triangulation of discourse analysis and Text mining was used to analyse the data. Analysis of the discourse revealed that articles with pro-migrant rhetoric provoked more discussion about the security and identity threat, while articles by populists provoked more discussion about the morality of elites and the economic threat of migration. The evoked sentiment throughout the discourse leaned more towards negative emotions (fear, anger) but pro-migrant articles and articles by non-populist politicians evoked also positive emotions (joy). Results indicate that rather than fear of migration, the anticipation of a change in the morale of the elites was the key element of the pre-election period in Slovakia. Limitations and implications of the study are further discussed. The value of this paper lies in focusing on both emotional and cognitive aspects of attitudes towards migration. By relying on Michel Foucault’s theory of social discourse and power/ knowledge where culture, customs and other elements of society are seen as the source of shared knowledge imposed on the individuals, this paper explores the theme of violence in William Faulkner’s novel Light in August (1932) to prove Joe Christmas’ violence as the result of his exposure to the social discourse of the time he lives in, namely the South during the Jim Crow era. The paper proves violence in the novel as mostly connected to the character of Joe Christmas and explores why Joe Christmas, even though the main enactor of violence, is not regarded as a villain but as an anti-hero. The period in which Christmas lives is the Jim Crow South where blackness was regarded as inferior, negative and evil which affects Joe’s self-perception and his actions. Joe, the captive of society, exhibits violence because the only thing he has been thought is to respond with violence. The paper will analyze several parts of the novel connected to Joe Christmas and violence to prove how violence in Faulkner’s novel does not exist per se but serves to prove how damaging the effect of society and social discourse can be.

In the article there is considered about the national specificity of the use of anthroponyms in French discourse is to determine their denotative and connotative content in a lingvopragmatic aspect. Names, surnames, nicknames used in the French written text, in particular in political, sports, social discourses, were selected as the object of research. Also, to analyze the discursive-pragmatic peculiarities of the names and surnames of French persons, from the dictionaries of M.T. Morle and A. Doza, published annually by the National Institute of Statistics and the Institute of Economics (INSEE) from data (2013-2019), Liberation (1996-2018), Le Figaro (1998-2017), Le Monde (2003-2018), L'Humanité (1999-2018), L'Evade newspapers, this and Internet source articles from other newspapers were used. In this research note, we further Alistair R. Anderson's argument that an atomized view of entrepreneurship as an economic function provides limited understanding of what it is to actually do entrepreneurship. We take the stance that entrepreneurship, as a process, is born of social context. What it is to be and what it is to do entrepreneurship is informed directly by the images of entrepreneurship accepted in society. To better understand the implications of this, we access the ways in which entrepreneurship is imagined in three ostensibly similar country settings: UK, Italy and Finland. We analyse the social discourses surrounding the concept from a sample of enterprise students across the three areas. Importantly, these participants are not entrepreneurs in their own right, but are considered interested stakeholders, in that the meaning they ascribe to entrepreneurship will partly inform their future approaches to it. We contrast data from 15 semi-structured interviews with policy commentary and measurable outcomes and find nuanced differences in how entrepreneurship is perceived and enacted. The implications of our findings encourage a more holistic approach to the study of entrepreneurship, avoiding the self-affirming dogma of the purely economic or purely constructionist. Today, the world is struggling with a coronavirus epidemic. People explain differently the causes and sense of this disease. Old Polish literature about diseases is representative for European thought in the modern era. The problem of the disease appears in old Polish literature in various discourses. The three most important are religious, medical–astrological and social discourse. In this article, I discuss basic paradigms of thinking connected with these discourses and the relationship between them. In the religious discourse, it is God who decides about health and illness. The pathological state of the organism can be both a trial and a punishment for the sinner. The medical and astrological discourse is based on ancient medicine, medieval medicine and astrology. It assumes a close dependence of human health on the balance of the fluids in the body and on the planetary system. The social discourse is dominated by epidemics of infectious diseases. With the rapid development of information technologies, the implementation of visual content has become a complementary component of social discourse, particularly in the media and news sectors. In this respect, it is increasingly important to pay huge attention to media literacy and relevant information processing. Sarcasm, one of the most widely used language choices in social discourse, can easily be a part of any media or news article. Sarcastic remarks are used for numerous reasons, namely, to indirectly express contempt, pretend an attitude, mock a situation or a person, or perhaps, they are more creative solutions to anger-provoking situations. The aim of the present research is to detect sarcastic messages in media and news articles through the multimodal markers of the discourse. This paper discusses the narratives that are being platformed by global OTT giants to break through the Indian subcontinent market. The narratives chosen to be produced and hosted by these platforms throw light on their market positioning strategies as well as outline the position of the web as a popular narrative medium. Picking up case studies of first two Indian web series -- Breathe (Amazon Prime Video India, 2018) and Sacred Games (Netflix, 2018), produced within the Indian subcontinent, the researchers trace the narratological intervention of the medium. Employing Narrative Analysis (Riessman, 1993) on the two samples, the researchers try to ascertain if the web is emerging as a convenient medium of alternative entertainment or if it is gradually helping in changing the course of societal discourse. Narrative analysis not only dissects the narrative structures and tools, but also locates the stories in the Alternative paradigm (Fuchs, 2010). Discussing the narratives and narrative structures, the researchers lastly compare the narratives with the ones popular in media such as Television and film, the paper also points at a contravention of the formulaic storytelling, stereotyped heroic depiction of the protagonist and an entry of themes mainstream media has refrained from using till now, such as gender fluidity and shades of grey in the protagonist. Building upon the study of the Internet as an alternative medium, this essay includes the narratives as a unit of study, especially in the Indian subcontinent, where the OTT market is yet uncharted and is open to both global and local producers. This article is an attempt to answer the question about the causes of the rhetoric crisis and its role in social discourse. The theoretical basis of these considerations and their reference point is the concept of new rhetoric in terms of the contemporary rhetoric and argumentation theorist Chaim Perelman. The first part briefly describes contemporary cultural discourse that takes place in a democratized society in the era of so-called new media. It indicates that inquiry into rhetoric (which started in antiquity) is also inquiry into universal criteria for cultural discourse, as well as the timeless and supra-cultural norms and principles that regulate this discourse (taking into account ongoing social and cultural changes). The second part of the article refers directly to the position of Chaim Perelman on the crisis of rhetoric. Perelman saw the main reason for this crisis in the separation of rhetoric from philosophy. The third part characterizes the new rhetoric in terms of its novelty and timeliness, as well as its reference to classical (Aristotelian) rhetoric. The fourth part points to the application of the concept of new rhetoric in cultural discourse. It discusses Perelman’s concept of universal audience, as well as the problem of concrete and abstract values, the understanding of which by the members of a given audience does or does not enable the communication (consensus) between each other. The end of the article briefly assesses Perelman’s contribution to understanding rhetoric and his role in restoring rhetoric to its rightful place in social discourse.

Like other “traditional” literary modes of expression, rap is a space where all forms of individual and social malaise can be enunciated and denounced. In addition to its aesthetic, poetic, musical and visual resources, rap reveals a social discourse. Its themes are inspired by personal experiences used for collective expression. This article considers the texts of four rappers from a transcultural and performative perspective: Booba (“Jimmy”), La Fouine (“Mes repères”), Valsero (“Lettre au Président”) and Maalhox le Viber (“Tu es dedans”). The first two are French and the other two are Cameroonian. All come from precarious social backgrounds and have directly experienced difficult situations (immigrant life, poverty, unemployment, incarceration, etc.) and their work could be described as satirical and auto/socio-therapeutic rap. They narrate themselves by depicting the social world through a rhetorical performance. According to them, reality, although poetized in many ways, should be submitted to crude and harsh (d)enunciation in order for change to take place. Thus, the two French rappers stage a daily life that is characterized by violence and precariousness, which both set the course for the suburban immigrants. For their Cameroonian colleagues, the focus is on atrophied/asphyxiated youth, who are left to their own devices and whose dreams have become vain because of a selfish political caste and bad governance (Valsero). These youths, lacking reference points, take refuge in the outrageous sexual debauchery (Maalhox le Viber). In both cases, rap is not only a poetic-musical discourse but also one characterized by its use of satire. Rappers, like committed writers, know how to combine words and woes in their art, making it into an instrument at the service of their audience’s pleasure and a tool for social progress.

Despite the high prevalence of incest, survivors are reluctant to disclose its existence for reasons such as shame, guilt and the presence of an accusatory and stigmatizing social discourse. The current mixed methods study examined the internal discourses of 13 incest survivors in Israel, reflected in self-reported internal dialogs which emerged during interviews. The qualitative analysis revealed a dialectical tension between two themes – one reflecting an internalization of the social discourse (manifested as quotes taken from social discourse and uttered by the survivors) and the other an agentic discourse (manifested in utterances either resisting the social discourse or showing an empowering advertence to one's own fulcrum). The quantitative analysis showed that for seven participants the internalized social discourse expressions were most frequent, for five the agentic expressions were most frequent, and that for one the discourses were at equilibrium. The ubiquitous sub-themes manifested in the internalized social discourse were: victimhood (feelings of vulnerability and helplessness), survivorship (meaningless existence, despair and hopelessness), negative self-esteem and self-pathology (perception of the self as having pathological psychological problems), and denial/repression of the abuse. The ubiquitous sub-themes manifested in the agentic discourse were: positive self-image and sense of potency, hope, optimism and positive perception of life, and uprising against the parents and institutions that did not give support. The discussion is based on Butler's concept of vulnerability, which suggests how to address the harms inflicted by incest without erasing aspects of the survivors' agency and growth. The objective of this work is to present the theory of social discourse of Marc Angenot as part of the socio-semiotic perspective that is worked in the city of Córdoba, Argentina, for more than 30 years. To characterize this trajectory, we propose to systematize the author's two books translated into Spanish (2010a; 2010b), plus an article (2012) that is relevant to the field of discursivity. It will be possible to identify, throughout the writing, two moments in Angenot's work: the first, where he develops his theory of social discourse (together with the concept of discursive hegemony, its components and the notions of marginality, contradiction and dissidence), and the second, where it links said device with the notion of argumentative arsenal.
