In most Southeast Asian countries, the members of the Chinese Diaspora have secured important position in the fields of administration, education and religion. Thanks to their capacity to work and to adapt as well as their frugality, their cultural influence continues to grow. Clans and factions form the essential structure of the ancient Chinese society. If Imperial China never developed a Civil Law, it's probably because the ancient Chinese society never really saw the need for it. This structure of relations could also explain why the Chinese civilisation didn't develop a real territorial reference. The Chinese Diaspora today covers different political and economical realities which could be conflicting. What primarily characterises the Diaspora is apparently its great capacity to organise itself in any economical, political, social or cultural environment. The capacity if its economic and administrative elites had been the determining factor of their development. However, the existence of informal and trans-national networks can also help the development of criminal activities. The presence of mafia groups and gangs of Chinese origin and their collusion with the world of finance and politics are historical facts in the region and could represent today a real threat for its stability. These criminal networks tend to forge business link with their Japanese, Russian, Korea, Italian or South American counterparts and sometimes could interfere with the process of political decision making.

After the 1680s, Big Vehicle Religion gradually developed on the Yunnan-Burma frontier. It was banned by the Qing government and became a sect of Chinese secret societies. The founders of this religion combined various Buddhist and Taoist elements together and claimed this to be the route to their salvation. They also trained many students to be monks. After the Sino-Burma wars these monks established a Five Buddha Districts system among the Lahu and some Wa villages in western Mekong River, until the system was destroyed by the Qing government in the 1880s. The monks became leaders of the Luohei/Lahu through millenarianism and many Han immigrants also became involved in the movements to become the Lahu or the Wa. The monks performed critical roles as social activists in Lahu cultural reconstruction. As a shaping power, their human agency was deeply integrated into secret societies and they formulated regional political centers as well as a network mechanism for the floating indigenous populations. Secret societies clearly shaped a historical framework for local politics and economic flux in the Yunnan-Burma frontier and became a cross-border mechanism for contemporary life after the border between Yunnan, Burma and Thailand was decided. However, it used to be a networking dynamic linked with silver and copper minefields, Sino-Burma wars, and anti-Qing millenarianism. La société secrète abakuá fait partie intégrante de l’univers religieux afro-cubain. Toutefois, son mode de fonctionnement ainsi que son système de recrutement « au mérite » s’inscrivent aux antipodes de la logique religieuse commune aux autres modalités de culte présentes sur l’île et reposant sur un échange de bons procédés entre hommes et dieux (transe, sacrifice, divination). En effet, être abakuá implique avant tout une construction de genre spécifique fondée sur une masculinité de type « machiste ». Cet article propose une analyse de l’engagement abakuá sous l’angle du genre en s’intéressant aux modalités d’affirmation de cette identité masculine centrale dans le culte, ainsi qu’aux représentations et aux interactions qui la sous-tendent. Le machisme en tant que système de pouvoir est légitimé au niveau mythologique, rituel et social, et la construction de la masculinité qui en découle repose sur une comparaison tant avec les femmes, exclues rituellement mais omniprésentes socialement, qu’avec les hommes homosexuels, véritable miroir antagonique des caïds du milieu populaire havanais. The abakuá secret society is part of the Afro-Cuban religious world. Emerging in 1836 in the port of Regla across from Old Havana, the male secret society abakuá is an urban religious phenomenon strictly confined to the western part of the island of Cuba, namely the port cities of Matanzas, Cárdenas and Havana. Future Abakuá members are hand-picked according to the criteria in force among the working-class population of Havana: courage in the face of any trial, a sense of duty towards other members, irreproachable sexual practices and an exaggerated and fiercely proclaimed masculinity. Indeed, its organization and its system of recruitment based on individual merit are at odds with that of people practising Santería or Palo Monte because these other Afro-Cuban cults are an exchange between gods and humans (trance, sacrifice or divination) and have an influence on everyday life problems. In fact, being abakuá implies a hyper-masculine, machismo gender construction. This article offers an analysis of the abakuá commitment from the perspective of gender and its representation in a public sphere. Belonging to this secret organization is a source of prestige in deprived Havana neighbourhoods and among an entire fringe of the urban population referred to as ‘the surroundings’ (el ambiente). Power games between individuals based on machismo and honour are a way of dealing with individual strategies for moving in the public space of the ambiente. Machismo as a system of power is legitimised through mythological, ritual and social practices. The construction of masculinity in the abakuá secret society is based on a constant comparison with women and with homosexual men. Women are excluded from the ritual system but are very important socially because they are central to a heterosexual construction of masculinity based on sexuality and family. Obviously, homosexual men represent an antagonistic masculinity and a real danger to the whole group. In this sense, being an abakuá means being a real man who knows how to move and behave in the ambiente of Havana. La sociedad secreta abakuá forma parte del universo religioso afrocubano. Sin embargo, su funcionamiento así como su sistema de reclutamiento según el mérito individual se inscriben en las antípodas de la lógica religiosa común a las otras modalidades de culto presentes en la isla basadas en un intercambio entre hombres y dioses (trance, sacrificio, adivinación). En efecto, ser abakuá implica ante todo una construcción del género fundada en una masculinidad de tipo machista. Este artículo propone un análisis del compromiso abakuá bajo el ángulo del género, investigando las modalidades de afirmación de esta identidad masculina central en el culto, así como las representaciones e interacciones que la acompañan. El machismo como sistema de poder se legitima a nivel mitológico, ritual y social y la construcción de la masculinidad que lo sobrelleva radica en una comparación del sujeto tanto con las mujeres, excluidas ritualmente pero omnipresentes socialmente como con los homosexuales masculinos, verdaderos espejos antagónicos de los jefes del ambiente habanero.

En Chine impériale, l’État s’est toujours défini comme garant de l’orthodoxie contre les rébellions inspirées par les « doctrines hérétiques », xiejiao. En République Populaire de Chine, des années cinquante à quatre-vingt, c’est le terme de huidaomen, « sociétés secrètes réactionnaires », qui est utilisé par le Parti communiste chinois pour stigmatiser et réprimer des centaines de groupes populaires. Mais à la fin des années quatre-vingt-dix, le terme de xiejiao réapparaît dans le discours officiel, pour traduire le discours des associations anti-sectes des pays occidentaux et pour justifier la répression du Falungong et d’autres groupes. What is the evolution of official discourse on stigmatized religious groups in China, from the late 19th century until today? In imperial China, the state always defined itself as the upholder of orthodoxy against popular rebellions inspired by the « heretical doctrines », xiejiao. In the Peoples’ Republic of China, from the 1950’s to 80’s, it was the label huidaomen, « reactionary secret societies », which was used by the Chinese Communist Party to stigmatize and repress hundreds of popular groups. But since the late 1990’s, the term xiejiao reappeared in official discourse, translating the rhetoric of Western anti-cult associations in order to justify the suppression of Falungong and other groups. ¿Cuál es la evolución del discurso oficial sobre los grupos religiosos estigmatizados en China, desde el fin del siglo XIX hasta hoy? En la República Popular de China, de los años ’50 a los años ’80, el término de huidaomen, “sociedades secretas reaccionarias”, es utilizado por el Partido comunista chino para estigmatizar y reprimir a cientos de grupos populares. Pero a fin de los años ’90, el término xiejiao reaparece en el discurso oficial para traducir el discurso de las asociaciones anti-sectas de los países occidentales y para justificar la represión del grupo Falungong y de otros grupos.

Traverser les espaces ruraux-urbains. Les Takumbeng et l’activisme dans la croisade démocratique du Cameroun. – Cet article s’intéresse au pouvoir exercé par les femmes au sein des sociétés secrètes et autres « enclaves féminines » au Cameroun et ailleurs. Il montre comment ce pouvoir est soumis à une constante transformation dans le paysage politique moderne. Les soulèvements, protestations et manifestations instigués par les femmes ont déjà été observés dans certaines sociétés camerounaises et dans d’autres régions d’Afrique, mais cet article s’intéresse tout particulièrement à la société féminine traditionnelle des Takumbeng et à sa politisation en cette période de démocratisation et de multipartisme. Nous examinerons la transformation de ce groupe dans le contexte de l’agitation collective et analyserons quel impact il subit sur la scène politique actuelle qui est caractérisée par une immense déception face au dédain et aux politiques non démocratiques du gouvernement national en place. Cette étude révèle le symbolisme et les métaphores, les interactions et raisons d’être culturelles qui se cachent derrière l’activisme de ce groupe en se plaçant du point de vue des acteurs en milieu urbain. L’article conclut que le groupe a accentué son combat continu pour la démocratie en s’appuyant sur son expérience de résistance, en ravivant la flamme de la démocratie sociale et en élevant la conscience politique dans la province Nord-Ouest du Cameroun, bastion du parti d’opposition, le Front social-démocrate. The article focuses on the power women wielded within secret societies and other women’s enclaves in Cameroon and beyond. It shows how this power is continuously being transformed in the modern political landscape. Female riots, protests and demonstrations have been recorded in certain societies in Cameroon and elsewhere in Africa but this paper looks at the Takumbeng traditional female society and its politicisation in the context of multiparty politics and democratisation. In this paper, the transformation of the group is examined against the backdrop of collective agitation and how it impacted on the political scene marked by an atmosphere of disenchantment with the highhandedness and undemocratic policies of the national government in place. The study captures the symbolism and metaphors, the cultural interplay and raison d’être behind the group’s activism from the lenses of the actors as played-out in an urban milieu. It concludes that the group enhanced the continuing struggle for democratic deepening through a legacy of resistance, restoring the flame of social democracy, raising political consciousness in the Northwest Province of Cameroon, a bastion of the Social Democratic Front opposition party.

Dans le cadre d'un séminaire de DEA sur le thème "Epurations, amnisties, amnésie", cette communication rappelle la résistance au coup d'Etat de Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, le 2 décembre 1851, et la répression pratiquée par les commissions mixtes de 1852. Des exemples particuliers sont pris dans le département du Tarn. Les filiations républicaines des proscrits sont également évoquées.

L'art sculptural de l'Ouest Cameroun constitue un véritable langage en images. Au Grassland plus qu'ailleurs en raison de ses liens étroits avec l'exercice du pouvoir, l'art est un moyen d'expression privilégié. C'est un "marqueur" non seulement des cultures de ces communautés des hautes terres, mais aussi de leur organisation sociale, politique, économique et religieuse, et, partant un outil culturel qui permet aux hommes d'agir sur leur propre milieu. C'est dans une perspective plurielle, combinaison d'histoire, d'ethnographie et d'analyse stylistique, où les objects liés aux rites, de prestige ou plus quotidiens, sont tous "chargés" de sens mais aussi de formes caractéristiques identifiées, tous porteurs de mémoire dans les "trésors" des rois, que se présente cette synthèse renouvelée des arts plastiques de l'Ouest et du Nord-Ouest du Cameroun. Elle est le fruit de plus de dix années de prospections de terrain dans les royaumes et chefferies du Grassland, d'innombrables entretiens avec les détenteurs de la tradition, et d'une analyse systématique de séries d'oeuvres in situ et dans les collections occidentales.
