Processes of formation and melting of snow cover in large cities remain poorly studied, for example, one of those is Nizhny Novgorod, the largest city in the Volga River basin. Using the relationship between the amount of precipitation, falling over the cold season, and the snow storage, formed on the whole territory of the city, that was built taking account of the influence of thaws, a continuous series of values of the snow water equivalent (snow storage) for the time of the snowmelt beginning was restored for the period 1965– 2019. Thaws were taken into account through the use of the sums of positive air temperatures for the cold period, calculated for each individual year of observation. During the period under consideration, the maximum snow storage occurred in 2011, while the minimum – in 1998; and it was close to the average value in 1973. Field snow-measuring surveys in the city and its environs, carried out in 2020, showed that the classical notion of the snow-storm transport is not true in the urban landscapes rather than in the environs. The use of the results of field snow surveys performed in different parts of the city in 2021, as well as the statistical characteristics of the above series of snow storage values, allowed estimating the distribution of the snow water equivalent in catchments of six small rivers in the city Nizhny Novgorod. The assessment is detailed for different types of urban landscapes and for years of different snow conditions, including the extreme ones.

Forests modify snow accumulation and ablation rates as well as overall snow storage amounts and durations, with multiple processes acting simultaneously and often in different directions. To synthesize complex forest–snow relations and help guide near‐term management decisions, we present a decision tree. The framework is based on a hypothesized hierarchy of processes and associated variables that predict forest effects on snow storage. In locations with high wind speeds, forests enhance snow storage magnitude and duration relative to open areas. Where wind speeds are low, and winter and spring air temperatures are colder, forests diminish snow storage magnitude but enhance duration. Where air temperatures are warmer, forests diminish both snow magnitude and duration. Forest structure and aspect are secondary influences. We apply the decision tree framework to map the influence of forests on snow storage under historic climate conditions across the western United States, but this decision tree is applicable in any region with forests and snow. This framework provides practitioners a first‐step evaluation to guide management decisions that consider where and how forests can be managed to optimize in situ water storage alongside other objectives, such as reducing wildfire hazard. This framework also articulates geospatial hypotheses, in order of anticipated importance, to be tested in future investigations of forest–snow–climate relations. Plain Language Summary: Forests affect the amount of snow that accumulates on the landscape and how long it lasts before melting. Thus, the removal of forest canopy via timber harvest, thinning, or fire influences how long water is stored on the landscape as snowpack and summer water availability for soils, instream, and water consumption. However, predicting whether forest cover accelerates or delays snowmelt relative to a nearby open area has proven difficult due to complex forest–snow processes that vary with location. In addition, under‐forest observations of snow are sparse. We present a binary decision tree framework to predict how the forest cover affects the amount and duration of snowpack relative to an adjacent open location. The intent is both to articulate a testable hypothesis for future research and to support forest management decisions that strive to balance both water resource considerations and other natural resource objectives, such as reducing wildfire hazard. We utilize publicly available climate and topographic data to present an example application for the western United States. The resulting map illustrates how the effect of forest canopy cover on snow storage varies by region and elevation and has implications for the forest management under current and warming climate conditions. In framework of the project «The Earth system Models – Snow Models Intercomparison Project» (ESMSnowMIP), calculations of snow storages were carried out on ten experimental sites organized for longterm monitoring of the snow cover variability in various regions of the globe. The calculation method is based on the physical and mathematical description of heat and moisture exchange processes occurring within the system «ground water – soil – vegetation cover/snow cover – surface layer of the atmosphere», and it is implemented in the form of the model of interaction between the land surface and the atmosphere (SWAP). The model was developed at the Institute of water problems (IWP) of Russian Academy of Sciences. The model makes possible to calculate components of water and heat balances and different characteristics of the hydrological regime of terrestrial ecosystems and river basins having different spatial scales and located in different natural conditions. Good quality of reproduction of the snow storages variability on all considered sites is reached that allows consideration of the SWAP model as one of the best models of the snow cover formation. Thus, the SWAP model has a sufficiently optimal degree of complexity of the algorithm for reproducing the dynamics of snow cover, which is necessary and sufficient in global and regional hydrological models describing formation of the water balance of the land in the cold regions of the planet, and can be used to create scenario forecasts of snow dynamics (as the important part of the cryosphere). This conclusion is verified by the results of using the SWAP model to reproduce long-term variability of snow storages in basins of the River Lena and the River Ob (with its tributary Irtysh) which are the two largest rivers of the Russian Federation. The calculated and measured characteristics of snow cover dynamics for these basins are shown to be in good agreement.

In 1966-2010, snow surveys were simultaneously performed in forests and fields on the Russian plain territory. This made it possible to analyze characteristics of snow storages on fields and in forests as well as a dynamics of them under the present-day climate changes. Data of 81 weather stations located on the territory were used. According to data of these stations for the period 2001–2010 we obtained the following estimates for the maximal snow storage values, on average: for 20 stations located on the European territory of Russia to the north of 60° N –167 mmin forests and 162 on fields; for 44 stations to the south of 60° N – 118 and116 mm, respectively; for 10 stations in the south of West Siberia – 125 and107 mm; and for 7 stations in the East Siberia – 64 and70 mm. As one can see the last region is characterized by the opposite relation between forest and field conditions. Comparison of these values with similar data for the period 1966-2000 demonstrated that maximal snow storages decreased in forests by 7% but in fields they increased by 2%. The ratio of the maximum snow storage in the forest to their value in the field (i.e. a coefficient of snow reserve) for the periods 1981–1990, 1991–2000, and 2001–2010 are 1.15; 1.11 and 1.03, respectively. One of the reasons for the equalization of snow storage in forest and field may be changes of intensity and duration of snowstorms. In the calendar winters of 2001-2010, the average number of observations at weather stations with wind speeds over 10 m/s decreased relative to 1966-2010: in the European part of Russia by factor of 8.9 times, and in Western and Eastern Siberia – by 2.0 and 1.9 times, respectively. In the European part ofRussia, the number of observation periods when wind speed from 6 to 10 m/s was observed decreased by 1.9 times.

Hydrological signatures that represent snow processes are valuable to gain insights into snow accumulation and snow melt dynamics. We investigated five snow signatures. Considering inter‐annual average of each calendar day, two slopes derived from the relation between streamflow and air temperature for different periods and streamflow peak maxima are used as signatures. In addition, two different approaches are used to compute inter‐annual average and yearly snow storage estimates. We evaluated the ability of these signatures to characterize average (a) snow melt dynamics and (b) snow storage. They were applied in 10 Critical Zone Observatory catchments of the Southern Sierra mountains (USA) characterized by a Mediterranean climate. The relevance and information content of the signatures are evaluated using snow depth and snow water equivalent measurements as well as inter‐catchment differences in elevation. The slopes quantifying the relations between streamflow and air temperature and the date of streamflow peak were found to characterize snow melt dynamics in terms of snow melt rates and snow melt affected areas. Streamflow peak dates were linked to the period of highest snow melt rates. Snow storage could be estimated both on average, considering all years, and for each year. Snow accumulation dynamics could not be characterized due to the lack of streamflow response during the snow accumulation period. The signatures were found potentially valuable to gain insights into catchment scale snow processes. In particular, when comparing catchments or observed and simulated data, they could provide insights into differences in terms of (a) snow melt rate and/or snow melt affected area over the snow melt season and (b) average or yearly snow storage. Requiring only widely available data, these hydrological signatures can be valuable for snow processes characterization, catchment comparison/classification or model development, calibration or evaluation. High chloride concentrations occur in inland waters from road salt applications (NaCl) as deicers. We studied seasonal and spatial distributions of chloride contamination in a shallow, urban marsh in Madison, Wisconsin, during the warm-wet winter of 2012–13, the cold-dry winter of 2014–15, and in the ice-free season of 2015. Chloride concentrations at the open water sites ranged from 10 to 1,261 mg L−1. Marsh inflows include a storm sewer, direct precipitation, and distributed surface flow and inferred groundwater flow around the marsh's perimeter. The upstream storm sewer had more influence on chloride concentrations in the upper marsh, whereas runoff from a large snow storage pile had more influence in the lower marsh. In the cold-dry winter, the storm sewer and ion exclusion from ice formation greatly influenced chloride concentrations. In the warm-wet winter, snow melt, and rain on snow events diluted chloride concentrations in the open marsh, while more snow and deicer use increased the role of a snow storage pile as a source of chloride. In the open-water sites in 2015, chloride concentrations decreased following rain, but continued to increase in drier periods, which suggests distributed overland and groundwater inflows provide a source of legacy chlorides to the marsh. The paper presents characteristics of a snow cover observed on the Lagonaky high plateau (the Western Caucasus) in the interfluve of the rivers Belaya and Pshekha along two snow-measuring courses. The period of observations is 1973–2015, and the altitude interval is 460–2020 m. The characteristics measured are the following: depths of snow cover, the snow density, and temperature of different snow layers in the test pits. The stratigraphy of the snow thickness is described. In different years, observations did show changes in the depths which felt within a wide range of values from a few centimeters up to 5–6 m at the same points. The observations allowed determination of dates of snow appearance (setting-up of snow cover) as well as the disappearance in different parts of the Lagonaky high plateau. Durations of the snow cover in different altitudinal belts were also determined. By the end of March the snow cover disappears to altitudes of 700 m, and after 20th of April the slopes become free of snow to 1000 m. The snow cover duration in the low-altitude zone (500–1000 m) is 70–80 days, while in the middle altitudes (1,000–1,500 m) it is 130 days. In the highlands (above 2000 m), the snow cover lasts for 215 days. It must be emphasized that during the last five years the duration of snow cover has changed significantly. Materials of snow surveys showed that snow depths and water contents (water equivalents of snow cover) significantly differ from year to year. In seasons 1975/76, 1978/79, 19861/87, 1989/90 the winters were extremely snowy, while winters in 1976/77, 1979/80, 1983/84, 1990/91, 2013–2015 had small amount of snow. According to data of distant snow-measuring sticks, the maximum values of the snow depth (610 cm) have been recorded in March of 1976 near the tourist shelter Fisht (1596 м). Significant changes in the distribution of snow cover in recent years were probably related to the global climate changes.

Using of the Chang model for calculation of the snow water equivalent on the basis of measurements of the Earth thermo-microwave radiation by means of scanning polarimeters (SMMR, SSM/I, AMSR-E) from board of orbital satellites does not allow obtaining the accuracy needed hydrological purposes. Low accuracy of the calculations is caused by both simplified character of the mathematical model, and due to significant influence of the surface characteristics (relief, vegetation and complex structure of snow thickness) upon the microwave radiation propagation. This work was aimed at finding a way to increase accuracy of calculations of the snow water equivalent on the Russian Federation territory with its different climate conditions by means of application the neural network approach for processing of results of the passive microwave scanning of the Earth surface. Feed-forward multi-layer artificial neural network was trained by back-propagation algorithm using SSM/I data and results of snow water equivalent in situ measurements obtained at 117 meteorological stations during the period from January 1st, 1988 till December 31st, 1988. Validation was performed using data from the same sources collected during 7 years (1992–1998). Results of performed numerical experiments and obtained values of rootmean-square error (σ = 24.9 мм; r = 0.39±0,01) allow coming to conclusion that the best estimation of water equivalent of a snow cover is provided by artificial neural network using as the input data a set of the SSM/I channels 19.35, 37.0, 85.5 GHz of horizontal and vertical polarizations with meteorological data differentiated by types of the snow survey route.It is shown that low correlation coefficients (

Character of spatial and long-term variability of snow cover is specified for the period 1966–2006. Long-term decrease of snow storage in November and December and absence of changes in January and March are revealed. The standard deviation for regional spatial distribution changes according to changes of snow storage. Long-term changes of the area with displays of the large snowiness (Sср + δs < Si< Sср + 2δs) and extremely large snowiness (Si>> Sср + 2δs) are estimated. The territories where large and extremely large snowiness are displayed does not exceed 12% from the total area, it is not very perilously for economic activity. Long-term changes of the area with displays by the large and extremely large snowiness correspond to long-term changes of snow storage. The area with simultaneous display of extremely large snowiness, extremely large sums of precipitation and extremely low air temperature is small and does not vary year by year. Hence, concurrence of extreme parameters dispositions also cannot be considered dangerous.

Local and regional differences in the snow formation were studied in different landscapes of the central part of the East European Plain – within reserves in the Moscow and Tver’ regions (south-north direction); the study period is the winter 2011/12. The observed increase of snow storage in 1.3–1.5 times in the direction south-north is connected, apparently. The difference in the five-day appearance of snow cover maximum is related to differences in regional winter air temperature. Throughout the snow depth and snow storage in spruce are smaller than in deciduous forest – in the ratio of 0.81 in south area and 0.93 in north area; in spruce the large part of solid precipitation is intercepted by the crowns pine trees. Snow stratigraphy at south areas has four layers, six layers at the north area are more variable in snow density and snow storage. Perhaps, gravitational conversion is more noticeable due to larger snow depth. Snow density and snow storage at the open areas are more heterogeneous than in the forest. This is due to sharp fluctuations in air temperature, wind transport and compaction of snow, evaporation from the snow surface. The stratigraphy of snow also reflects the history of winter changes of air temperature and snow accumulation. Common feature for reserves at south and north is the availability of layers with maximum snow storage in the middle of the snow thickness, which were formed during the air temperature drops to the lowest seasonal values in period with increase of snow depth to maximum. Formation of depth hoar in snow thickness are touched everywhere the bottom and middle layers, respectively, it was formed both before and during the period with minimal air temperature. Thus, the results of experimental studies confirm the significance of the differences of individual components of the landscape setting. Analytical conclusions are largely qualitative in nature due to the lack to date of initial information, and therefore to continue experimental studies is expected.

Statistical parameters and tendencies of the long-term changes in snow cover characteristics of forest-steppe in Fore-Baykal region were evaluated according to the observational data obtained at meteorological stations by means of permanent snow stake as well as using snow survey in the field and in the forest for the long-term period 1961–2000. Duration of snow cover decreases. The snow depth according to the permanent snow stake increases. The observed values of snow survey show that in the field without any significant changes in the snow depth manifest itself the local effect of water supply reduction in the snow cover. The largest rates of decrease of snow depth and snow storage has experienced in the forest. The maximum snow density decreases both in the field and in forest.

The paper deals with study of snowiness and estimation of modern tendencies of its changes in the area of Krasnaya Polyana in the West Caucasus. Olympic Games will take place here in February, 2014. The paper is based on the data of meteorological stations Krasnaya Polyana (567 m), Achishho (1880 m) and snow surveys along the Mzymta River valley (0–2500 m). Period under study characterized by winters with different snowiness. This difference is analyzed due to their changes in altitude levels. During two last decades, the noticeable reduction of snowiness occurred in the investigated district. The dependence between snowy winters and periods of cold temperatures is identified. In seasons of anomaly high and low snowiness the difference of snow depth can reach 5 m (Achishho). In places of Olympic ski lower stations (Gornaya Karussel, Gasprom, Rosa-Hutor) the temperature of cold period runs from −1,6 ºC up to 4,9 ºC, and the periodicity of winters with positive temperatures is 86% on this level. The effects of global climate change threaten the availability of water resources worldwide and modify their tempo-spatial pattern. Properly quantifying the possible effects of climate change on water resources under different hydrological models is a great challenge in ungauged alpine regions. By using remote sensing data to support established models, this study aimed to reveal the effects of climate change using two models of hydrological processes including total water resources, peak flows, evapotranspiration, snowmelt and snow accumulation in the ungauged Hotan River Basin under future representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios. The results revealed that stream flow was much more sensitive to temperature variation than precipitation change and increased by 0.9-10.0% according to MIKE SHE or 6.5-10.5% according to SWAT. Increased evapotranspiration was similar for both models with a range of 7.6-31.3%. The snow-covered area shrank from 32.5% to 11.9% between the elevations of 4200-6400 m, respectively, and snow accumulation increased when the elevation exceeded 6400 m above sea level (asl). The results also suggested that the fully distributed and semi-distributed structures of these two models strongly influenced the responses to climate change. Continental precipitation returns to the atmosphere and the ocean with a delay that is critical in regulating seasonal water supply to ecosystems and societies. We quantify the magnitude and spatial patterns of this seasonal hydrologic buffer, its climatic and terrain drivers, and its apparent benefits to ecosystems using observed precipitation, climate reanalysis evaporation, GRACE seasonal water storage change, and MODIS vegetation index for a 1°× 1° global grid. We found that (1) seasonal hydrologic buffering is widespread and averages 241 mm.yr −1 on land (a quarter of continental precipitation); it supports evaporation 3-to-9 months of the year over all regions except the per-humid tropics and energy limited high latitudes, (2) the seasonal climatic water imbalance, with surplus in some months and deficit in others, drives hydrologic buffering in lower latitudes, while it is controlled by snow/ice storage in high latitudes, (3) the main terrain effect at our scale of analysis is grid-to-grid water transfer via large rivers providing lateral subsidy to lowland basins, and (4) buffering is manifested in global patterns of plant water use, as shown by high evaporation levels in water deficit conditions, particularly under tropical monsoonal climate. Our results highlight the paramount role of seasonal land water storage and redistribution in supporting ecosystem productivity, and provide a reference to understanding likely impacts of global change on the water cycle and ecosystem dynamics in the future. This study focuses on a water circulating-type snow cooling system in which water flows through the bottom layer of the snow. The characteristics of heat exchange between the snow and water were investigated experimentally under the following three different snow storage conditions: 1) laboratory-sized snow stored in a 0°C room for 0 to 15 days, 2) snow stored in a 12-ton reefer container for about 4 months, 3) snow stored in an 150-ton storage in the actually operated snow cooling facility for about 4 months. The surface shape of the snow and inlet/outlet water temperatures of the heat exchange section were measured at proper time intervals. Regarding the change in shape of the snow, phenomena such that there was almost no change during a certain period, the open crack occurred in the snow and the snow lump suddenly subducted were observed. The outlet water temperature varied according to the phenomena. How the crack occurred differed somewhat according to the snow storage conditions. The heat exchange performance between the snow and water decreased with the snow storage periods. The decrease clearly appeared even in 1 day. The ratio of the water temperature drop due to heat exchange with the snow to the temperature difference between the pump-feeding water and the snow varied with the water-flowing direction length of the snow at the initial and a given time, the gap length between the snow and the side wall, and the snow storage period. Snow density is an important measure in hydrology used to convert snow depth to the snow water equivalent (SWE). A model developed by Sturm, Tara and Liston predicts the snow density by using snow depth, the snow age and a snow class defined by the location. In this work this model is extended to include location and seasonal weather-specific variables. The model is named Weather Snow Density Model (Weather SDM). A Bayesian framework is chosen, and the model is fitted to and tested for 4,040 Norwegian snow depth and densities measurements between 1998 and 2011. The final model improved the snow density predictions for the Norwegian data compared to the model of Sturm by up to 50%. Further, the Weather SDM is extended to utilize local year-specific snow density observations (Weather&ObsDensity SDM). This reduced the prediction error an additional 16%, indicating a significant improvement when utilizing information provided by annual snow density measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pair correlation coefficients have been calculated using the biological spectrum of vascular plants of the Tom River basin, as well as the data on monthly average air temperature during the winter season, snow-cover thickness, and snow-water equivalent. It is determined that the impact of air temperature on different life forms on the plains and in the mountains varies and is displaced in time. Abstract: This paper proposes a snow storage system in a renovated space for efficient energy use and reduction of the costs related to snow utilization, and aims to clarify the system’s effectiveness. First, it gives an outline of the system together with a description of the facility used for demonstration testing. Second, it highlights the results of long-term measurements relating to snow storage characteristics, which showed that 59% of the latent energy in the initially stored snow had been used for cooling by the end of the relevant period. The authors discuss how heat balance analysis revealed a relatively high level of heat loss from the floor due to the storage facility’s location in an underground space, and confirm that the system has the potential to secure a high level of energy conservation. Finally, the paper outlines the results of analysis conducted throughout the construction and operation phases of the cooling system, which revealed that the initial cost was 96% that of a conventional cooling system. The practice of used snow disposal has evolved from indiscriminate snow dumping to storage and meltwater management at engineered snow disposal sites. The Town of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, constructed such a snow disposal site in 2003. Environment Canada and the Town of Richmond Hill formed a partnership to investigate the operation of the Richmond Hill Snow Storage Facility (RHSSF) with respect to snowmelt flows, fluxes of chemicals contained in snowmelt and direct effects on the receiving water. Results of chloride monitoring during the winter of 2007 are presented here. Roughly 16 tonnes of chloride passed through the snow disposal facility in 2007, which in itself reflects only a small proportion of the total salt applied to roads that winter. The highest concentrations of chloride were present in early melt, with 50% of the chloride released within the first 30% of the meltwater. The remainder of the chloride was released in lower concentration, higher volume melt later in the season. As expected, conductivity measurements at the outlet of the stormwater pond indicate that the meltwater management system served to delay and dilute the chloride released, but not to remove the pollutant. Abstract: This paper aims to contribute to the introduction and promotion of the snow and ice energy in cold and heavy snowfall regions in the future. To achieve this goal, we have developed a new concept for improvement of the performance of a snow and ice energy system. We propose the high-density snow storage (HSS) system and the urban cold spring (UCS) for the purpose of efficient energy use and cost saving. The snow density of conventional snow storage systems is 450–550kg/m3. The high construction cost of these systems has been caused by a large space for the snow storage. The snow density is heightened to 750–800kg/m3 for the HSS system. UCS is the large HSS system for cities and communities. In 2002, HSS was applied to an actual office building in Oshu, Japan. The mass of stored snow was approximately 450tonnes. The thermal insulation of snow storage room is 100–200mm in thickness. Melt water is gathered in the cool water tank and is pumped to the heat exchanger. In 2003, space cooling was operated by using this HSS system. Eight of the current sizing and design methods proposed for bioretention facilities were evaluated for rainfall runoff and snow storage volumes for a costal cold climate in Trondheim, Norway. The RECARGA bioretention infiltration model was used to compare the performance of the methods using 30 months of observed data from a pilot scale bioretention box. The surface areas, total ponding time, number and duration of overflow events, and snow storage volumes were compared. It was found that even in a costal cold climate with several intermittent melt cycles die snow storage requirements were an important design parameter, and if more than 25% of the total snow volume should stored this became the deciding design parameter. The Municipality of Anchorage (MOA), at 61° north latitude, ploughs and hauls snow from urban streets throughout the winter, incorporating grit and chloride applied to street surfaces for traffic safety. Hauled snow is stored at snow disposal facilities, where it melts at ambient spring temperatures. MOA studies performed from 1998 through 2001 show that disposal site melt processes can be manipulated, through site design and operation practices, to control chloride and turbidity in meltwater. An experimental passive "V-swale" pad configuration tested by MOA investigators reduced site meltwater turbidity by an order of magnitude (to about 50 NTU from the 500 NTU typical of more conventional planar pad geometry).
