Smart power grids suffer from electricity theft cyber-attacks, where malicious consumers compromise their smart meters (SMs) to downscale the reported electricity consumption readings. This problem costs electric utility companies worldwide considerable financial burdens and threatens power grid stability. Therefore, several machine learning (ML)-based solutions have been proposed to detect electricity theft; however, they have limitations. First, most existing works employ supervised learning that requires the availability of labeled datasets of benign and malicious electricity usage samples. Unfortunately, this approach is not practical due to the scarcity of real malicious electricity usage samples. Moreover, training a supervised detector on specific cyberattack scenarios results in a robust detector against those attacks, but it might fail to detect new attack scenarios. Second, although a few works investigated anomaly detectors for electricity theft, none of the existing works addressed consumers' privacy. To address these limitations, in this paper, we propose a comprehensive federated learning (FL)-based deep anomaly detection framework tailored for practical, reliable, and privacy-preserving energy theft detection. In our proposed framework, consumers train local deep autoencoder-based detectors on their private electricity usage data and only share their trained detectors' parameters with an EUC aggregation server to iteratively build a global anomaly detector. Our extensive experimental results not only demonstrate the superior performance of our anomaly detector compared to the supervised detectors but also the capability of our proposed FL-based anomaly detector to accurately detect zero-day attacks of electricity theft while preserving consumers' privacy. Smart grids integrate information and communications technology into the processes of electricity production, transportation, and consumption, thereby enabling interactions between power suppliers and consumers to increase the efficiency of the power grid. To achieve this, smart meters (SMs) are installed in households or buildings to measure electricity usage and allow power suppliers or consumers to monitor and manage it in real time. However, SMs require a secure service to address malicious attacks during memory protection and communication processes and a lightweight communication protocol suitable for devices with computational and communication constraints. This paper proposes an authentication protocol based on a one-way hash function to address these issues. This protocol includes message authentication functions to address message tampering and uses a changing encryption key for secure communication during each transmission. The security and performance analysis of this protocol shows that it can address existing attacks and provides 105,281.67% better computational efficiency than previous methods. One of the most important developments in the energy industry is the evolution of smart grids, which record minute details of voltage levels, energy usage, and other critical electrical variables through General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)-enabled meters. This phenomenon creates an extensive dataset for the optimization of the grid system. However, the minute-by-minute energy details recorded by GPRS meters are challenging to store and manage in physical storage resources (old techniques lead to a memory shortage). This study investigates using the distributed file system, replicated Gluster, as a reliable storage option for handling and protecting the enormous volumes of data produced by smart grid components. This study performs two essential tasks. (1) The storage of virtual data received from GPRS meters and load flow analysis of SynerGee Electric 4.0 software from the smart grid (we have extracted electrical data from 16 outgoing feeders, distributed lines, in this manuscript). (2) Tele-trafficking is performed to check the performance of replicated Gluster (RG) for virtual data (electrical data received from the smart grid) storage in terms of User Datagram Protocol (UDP), Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), data flow, and jitter delays. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve global decarbonisation, it is essential to find sustainable and renewable alternatives for electricity production. In this context, the development of distributed generation systems, with the use of thermodynamic and photovoltaic solar energy, wind energy and smart grids, is fundamental. ORC power plants are the most appropriate systems for low-grade thermal energy recovery and power conversion, combining solar energy with electricity production. The application of a micro-scale ORC plant, coupled with Parabolic Trough Collectors as a thermal source, can satisfy domestic user demand in terms of electrical and thermal power. In order to develop a micro-scale ORC plant, a commercial hermetic scroll compressor was tested as an expander with HFC-245fa working fluid. The tests required the construction of an experimental bench with monitoring and control sensors. The aim of this study is the description of the scroll performances to evaluate the application and develop optimization strategies. The maximum isentropic effectiveness is reached for an expansion ratio close to the volumetric expansion ratio of the scroll, and machine isentropic effectiveness presents small variations in a wide range of working conditions. The filling factor is always higher than one, due to leakage in the mechanical seals of the scroll or other inefficiencies. This study demonstrates that using a commercial scroll compressor as an expander within an ORC system represents a valid option for such applications, but it is necessary to improve the mechanical seals of the machine and utilize a dedicated control strategy to obtain the maximum isentropic effectiveness. Wi-Fi networks within the smart grid play a vital role in enabling communication between smart meters and data collectors. They are also frequently used in automation and metering, distribution control and monitoring, and distribution protection. However, a significant challenge arises from the uncertainty surrounding the genuine identity of data recipients. In this paper, we propose an efficient and novel covert channel that leverages the IEEE 802.11 DCF to transmit data requiring a high level of security. It is also the world's first covert channel supporting quality of service (QoS). Our protocol was implemented and tested in the ns-3 simulator, achieving very high-performance results. Its performance remains robust even under saturated network conditions with additional background traffic generated by other stations. In distribution systems, the state estimation task is very complicated due to the problems arising from the unbalanced operation and network configuration changes. Additionally, the convergence process of state estimation gets affected by the loss of physical measurements due to meter failure, communication failure, and large communication time delays. To address the issue of loss of measurement data, a new deep learning approach, namely a convolutional generative adversarial imputed network (CGAIN) with modified loss functions, is proposed. A branch current-distribution system state estimation (BC-DSSE) with different percentages of missing measurement data has been implemented and studied. Furthermore, the analysis has been carried out for different types of uncertainties involving several kinds of measurement devices and pseudo-measurements for different classes of consumer loads. Also, the effect of imputed data on state estimation accuracy is tested at different operating conditions of load. The imputation performance of the CGAIN model is tested by comparing it with statistical methods, and ML/DL approaches. The benefits of the proposed model are validated by Monte Carlo simulations on the modified IEEE 13-node and IEEE 37-node unbalanced distribution test systems. Simulation results show that the proposed model can effectively impute the missed data under any operating condition. Nowadays, it is evident that the traditional power grid system is changing to smart grid in a revolutionary and evolutionary manner. Compared to other systems, advanced metering infrastructure has three distinctive features that must be carefully considered, including hybrid mode of message transmission, constraints on the computation and storage capability of smart meters ( S M s ) and variable number of participants in demand response (DR) projects. In order to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability, an efficient and robust scheme for key management is required for secure two-way transmission between S M s and data control unit ( D C U ), which is still an unsolved problem. To deal with the security requirements and consider the specific features, this paper proposes a novel key management scheme that drastically reduces the computation cost of the D C U and S M s . Further, in the proposed scheme, there is no need to change the keys of existing S M s when a S M joins/leaves the group. Therefore, the computation cost of D C U and S M s for updating the keys is reduced to O (1). With the rapid development of the information age, smart meters play an important role in the smart grid. However, there are more and more attacks on smart meters, which mainly focus on the identity authentication of smart meters and the security protection of electricity consumption data. In this paper, an efficient lightweight smart meter authentication scheme is proposed based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT), which can realize the revocation of a single smart meter user by publishing a secret random value bound to the smart meter identity. The proposed scheme not only protects the security of smart meter electricity consumption data by using encryption, but also resists identity attacks from both internal and external adversaries by using hash functions and timestamps. Experiment shows that the proposed scheme has lower computation overhead and communication overhead than other authentication schemes and is more suitable for smart meter authentication. The exploitation of green hydrogen blending with natural gas (NG) is expected to contribute in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and fostering the share of renewable energy sources (RES). The NG infrastructure, in fact, can act as a storage facility for green hydrogen produced from excess RES, also providing flexibility to the electric system. However, the unbalance of the networks and the raise of protection issues for consumers may occur as a consequence of the potential decay of the metrological performance of gas meters operating with natural gas and hydrogen blends. In this paper, the authors present the results of an experimental campaign aimed at analysing the effect of hydrogen blending on the accuracy of smart domestic gas meters. Experimental tests were performed in the laboratory using air, natural gas and gas-hydrogen blends up to 23%vol. The results show no criticalities occur for diaphragm and ultrasonic gas meters, regardless of the hydrogen content. The digitization of distribution power systems has revolutionized the way data are collected and analyzed. In this paper, the critical task of harnessing this information to identify irregularities and anomalies in electricity consumption is tackled. The focus is on detecting non-technical losses (NTLs) and energy theft within distribution networks. A comprehensive overview of the methodologies employed to uncover NTLs and energy theft is presented, leveraging measurements of electricity consumption. The most common scenarios and prevalent cases of anomalies and theft among consumers are identified. Additionally, statistical indicators tailored to specific anomalies are proposed. In this research paper, the practical implementation of numerous artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, including the artificial neural network (ANN), ANFIS, autoencoder neural network, and K-mean clustering, is highlighted. These algorithms play a central role in our research, and our primary objective is to showcase their effectiveness in identifying NTLs. Real-world data sourced directly from distribution networks are utilized. Additionally, we carefully assess how well statistical methods work and compare them to AI techniques by testing them with real data. The artificial neural network (ANN) accurately identifies various consumer types, exhibiting a frequency error of 7.62%. In contrast, the K-means algorithm shows a slightly higher frequency error of 9.26%, while the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) fails to detect the initial anomaly type, resulting in a frequency error of 11.11%. Our research suggests that AI can make finding irregularities in electricity consumption even more effective. The growth of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled devices has increased the amount of data created by the distribution network's periphery nodes, requiring more data transfer capacity. Recent applications' real-time requirements have strained standard computing paradigms, and data processing has struggled to keep up. Edge computing is employed in this research to detect distribution network faults, allowing for instant sensing and real-time reaction to the control room for faster investigation of distribution problems and power outages, making the system more reliable. Moreover, to overcome the challenges of fault detection, advanced signal processing methods need to be integrated with the Adaboost classifier. An Adaboost-based edge device, suitable for installation on top of a power pole, is proposed in this research as a means of real-time fault detection. To increase throughput, decrease latency and offload network traffic, data collecting, feature extraction and Adaboost-based problem identification are all performed in an integrated edge node. Enhanced detection accuracy (98.67%) and decreased latency (115.2 ms) verify the effectiveness of the suggested approach. In this research, we enhance the classical chirplets transform to create the scaling-basis chirplet transform (SBCT) for time–frequency (TF) analysis. This approach modulates the TF basis around the relevant time function to modify the chirp rate with frequency and time. By carefully selecting the sampling frequency, it is possible to discriminate between short circuit fault and high-impedance fault (HIF) by calculating spectral entropy. The TF representation obtained with the SBCT provides considerably higher energy concentrations, even for signals with numerous components, closely spaced frequencies and heavy background noise. The power system has undergone significant growth and faced considerable challenges in recent decades, marked by the surge in energy demand and advancements in smart grid technologies, including solar and wind energies, as well as the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. These developments have introduced a level of complexity for utilities, compounded by the rapid expansion of behind-the-meter (BTM) photovoltaic (PV) systems, each with its own unique design and characteristics, thereby impacting power grid stability and reliability. In power systems, disturbances between 2 kHz and 150 kHz are called "Supraharmonics" (SH). Although supraharmonics are not a new concept; It has only attracted the attention of researchers, engineers and manufacturers of end-user devices in recent years. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests, which are required for placing electrical/electronic devices on the market, require the measurement of harmonic currents (50 Hz-2000 Hz) and the measurement of conducted emission values. However, studies and research in the supraharmonic range are quite limited. As systems using semi-conductor technologies with high power and switching in the kHz range such as photovoltaic energy systems, electric vehicle fast charging stations, high speed digital communication systems become widespread, supraharmonics have also begun to be effective in power distribution systems and cause problems. Today, the struggle against high-frequency disturbances caused by the increased use of electrical and electronic devices, switched power electronic devices and power line communication (PLC) devices is even more prominent. Research conducted in recent years have revealed that disturbances between 2 kHz and 150 kHz cause measurement errors in smart meters, audible noise, malfunctions and performance reductions in electrical devices. In this study, sources of supraharmonics, the problems they cause in devices and networks, measurement methods of supraharmonics and related standards, supraharmonic simulation of sample devices and analysis by measurement are given. As an important component of the smart grid, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) networks can deliver diverse auxiliary services and enhance the overall resilience of electrical power systems. However, V2G networks face two main challenges due to a large number of devices that connect to it. First, V2G networks suffer from serious security threats, such as doubtful authenticity and privacy leakage. Second, the efficiency will decrease significantly due to the massive requirements of authentication. To tackle these problems, this paper proposes a cross-domain authentication scheme for V2G networks based on consortium blockchain and certificateless signature technology. Featuring decentralized, open, and transparent transactions that cannot be tampered with, this scheme achieves good performance on both security and efficiency, which proves to be suitable for V2G scenarios in the smart grid. In the context of increasingly necessary energy transition, the precise modeling of profiles for low-voltage (LV) network consumers is crucial to enhance hosting capacity. Typically, load curves for these consumers are estimated through measurement campaigns conducted by Distribution System Operators (DSOs) for a representative subset of customers or through the aggregation of load curves from household appliances within a residence. With the instrumentation of smart meters becoming more common, a new approach to modeling profiles for residential customers is proposed to make the most of the measurements from these meters. The disaggregation model estimates the load profile of customers on a low-voltage network by disaggregating the load curve measured at the secondary substation level. By utilizing only the maximum power measured by Linky smart meters, along with the load curve of the secondary substation, this model can estimate the daily profile of customers. For 48 secondary substations in our dataset, the model obtained an average symmetric mean average percentage error (SMAPE) error of 4.91% in reconstructing the load curve of the secondary substation from the curves disaggregated by the model. This methodology can allow for an estimation of the daily consumption behaviors of the low-voltage customers. In this way, we can safely envision solutions that enhance the grid hosting capacity. Ultra-low noise is a critical component in the design of high-precision sensor front-ends. We introduced differential phase-sensitive detection (d-PSD) to mitigate both multiplicative and additive noise in optical sensors, aiming for an enhanced performance and cost-effectiveness. The d-PSD combines a capacitive transimpedance amplifier (C-TIA), a delta–sigma analog-to-digital converter (ΔΣ-ADC), and a software-based lock-in amplifier (s-LIA). The first two components utilize the DDC112 (a dual current input 20-bit ADC) for a minimal analog channel length, thus reducing noise efficiently, while the latter employs a cost-effective 32-bit microcontroller unit (MCU), the HC32F460. This approach was successfully implemented as the front-end for a smart optical sensor. Testing indicated that the sensor achieved an equivalent current noise level of 0.6 nA/√Hz, primarily attributed to the light source driver rather than the sensor's front-end circuit. The sensor exhibited an exceptional performance, with a 3σ measurement precision of 5.4 × 10−4 over a 1-second integration time and a dynamic range of 100 dB, leveraging the proposed method and design. Furthermore, the front-end of the sensor boasts a compact size, low power consumption, and affordability, making it an ideal, versatile solution for ultra-high precision, smart optical sensors. Electricity theft presents a significant financial burden to utility companies globally, amounting to trillions of dollars annually. This pressing issue underscores the need for transformative measures within the electrical grid. Accordingly, our study explores the integration of block chain technology into smart grids to combat electricity theft, improve grid efficiency, and facilitate renewable energy integration. Block chain's core principles of decentralization, transparency, and immutability align seamlessly with the objectives of modernizing power systems and securing transactions within the electricity grid. However, as smart grids advance, they also become more vulnerable to attacks, particularly from smart meters, compared to traditional mechanical meters. Our research aims to introduce an advanced approach to identifying energy theft while prioritizing user privacy, a critical aspect often neglected in existing methodologies that mandate the disclosure of sensitive user data. To achieve this goal, we introduce three distributed algorithms: lower–upper decomposition (LUD), lower–upper decomposition with partial pivoting (LUDP), and optimized LUD composition (OLUD), tailored specifically for peer-to-peer (P2P) computing in smart grids. These algorithms are meticulously crafted to solve linear systems of equations and calculate users' "honesty coefficients," providing a robust mechanism for detecting fraudulent activities. Through extensive simulations, we showcase the efficiency and accuracy of our algorithms in identifying deceitful users while safeguarding data confidentiality. Microgrids are local energy production and distribution networks that can operate independently when disconnected from the main power grid thanks to the integration of power generation systems, energy storage units and intelligent control systems. However, despite their advantages, the optimal energy management of real microgrids remains a subject that requires further investigation. Specifically, an effective management of microgrids requires managing a large number of electrical variables related to the power generated by the microgrid's power supplies, the power consumed by the loads and the aspects of power quality. This study analyzes how we can monitor different variables, such as the active power, reactive power, power factor, total harmonic distortion and frequency in the loads of a microgrid, using high-precision power meters. Our empirical study, conducted using a functional microgrid comprising a hybrid wind–solar power system and several household appliances, demonstrates the feasibility of using low-cost and high-performance power meters with IoT functionality to collect valuable power quality and energy consumption data that can be used to control the microgrid operation. Metering anomalies not only mean huge economic losses but also indicate the faults of equipment and power lines, especially within the substation. As a result, metering anomaly diagnosis is becoming one of the most important missions in smart grids. However, due to the insufficient and imbalanced anomaly cases, identifying the anomalies in smart meter data accurately and efficiently remains challenging. Existing methods usually employ few-shot learning models in computer vision directly, which requires the rich experience of human experts and sufficient abnormal cases for training. It blocks model generalizing to various application scenarios. To address these shortcomings, we propose a novel framework for metering anomaly diagnosis based on few-shot learning, named FSMAD. Firstly, we design a fault data injection model to emulate anomalies, so that no abnormal samples are required in the training phase. Secondly, we provide a learnable variable transformation to reveal inherent relationships among various smart meter data and help FSMAD extract more efficient features. Finally, the deeper metric network is equipped to support FSMAD in obtaining powerful comparison capability. Due to recent technical breakthroughs in wireless communication and the Internet of Things (IoT), the smart grid (SG) has been recognized as a next-generation network for intelligent and efficient electric power transmission. Electric vehicle charging is becoming one of the most popular SG application. However, in SG environment the communication between a vehicle user and smart meter is mostly performed using insecure channel for managing demand response during peak hours. This raises serious security and privacy issues. Motivated from the aforementioned challenges, this paper presents a secure and privacy-preserving framework for IoT-enabled SG environment. The proposed framework first uses a secure mutual authentication scheme to register and exchange session key among SG participants. Second, a deep learning method that uses a stacked sparse denoising autoencoder to convert data into a new encoded format is suggested. The attention-based truncated long short-term memory uses this modified data to identify intrusions. The proposed blockchain architecture uses the proof of authentication consensus mechanism to propagate regular transactions in order to validate data integrity and prevent data poisoning attacks. The Internet of Things is an ecosystem that connects billions of smart devices, meters, and sensors. These devices and sensors collect and share data for use and evaluation by organizations in different industry sectors. Humans may use the IoT to live and work more intelligently and gain total control over their lives. Consequently, IoT can be used to connect devices and integrate them with new digital technologies for customers. On the other hand, smart utility companies in the electric, gas, and water sectors need to deliver services more efficiently and analyze their operations in a way that can help optimize performance, detect growing problems in real time, and initiate fixes to avoid unplanned service interruptions. Building actual smart metering networks is costly and time-consuming. Therefore, in this paper, a new Smart Utilities Traffic Scheduling Algorithm (SUTSA) is proposed. To minimize the system complexity, the model is based on narrowband power line communication, in which a wired hidden network sends data across power lines. A simulation is performed using OPNET Modeler 14.5 to evaluate the proposed model. The results proved that the proposed model is highly scalable and achieves full network-bandwidth utilization in different situations based on different application requirements. Reliability is a fundamental requirement of wide‐area backup protection (WABP) systems, and it is one of the most crucial performance indicators for such a WABP system. Two definitions are introduced: the reliability of WABP systems and the undetectable probability of a power line. They are determined by the specific placement of communication links (CLs) and phasor measurement units (PMUs). A simultaneous optimization model was developed to minimize the construction cost of WABP systems by optimizing the partitioning and placement of PMUs, protection centers, and CLs. The model considers several constraints, including latency, regional balance, and system reliability. To reduce the computational complexity, a cluster‐based genetic algorithm was developed to determine the optimal solution. Finally, numerical simulations were conducted using IEEE test cases. Linear assignment problems are well-known combinatorial optimization problems involving domains such as logistics, robotics and telecommunications. In general, obtaining an optimal solution to such problems is computationally infeasible even in small settings, so heuristic algorithms are often used to find near-optimal solutions. In order to attain the right assignment permutation, this study investigates a general-purpose learning strategy that uses a bipartite graph to describe the problem structure and a message passing Graph Neural Network (GNN) model to learn the correct mapping. Comparing the proposed structure with two existing DNN solutions, simulation results show that the proposed approach significantly improves classification accuracy, proving to be very efficient in terms of processing time and memory requirements, due to its inherent parameter sharing capability. Among the many practical uses that require solving allocation problems in everyday scenarios, we decided to apply the proposed approach to address the scheduling of electric smart meters access within an electricity distribution smart grid infrastructure, since near-real-time energy monitoring is a key element of the green transition that has become increasingly important in recent times. The results obtained show that the proposed graph-based solver, although sub-optimal, exhibits the highest scalability, compared with other state-of-the-art heuristic approaches. Home area network (HAN) devices send the electricity consumption and other important data to the smart meter that must remain confidential from other devices. This paper proposes a novel one-dimensional hybrid chaotic map. The proposed map shows excellent chaotic properties when analyzed by bifurcation diagram, Lyapunov exponent & Shannon entropy. We further design an encryption strategy for data transfers between the smart meter and HAN devices. The proposed encryption scheme uses the existing lightweight key management in advanced metering infrastructure (LKM-AMI) architecture for data transfers, in which the encrypted data is transferred through an insecure channel and private keys are provided by trusted third party (TTP) through secure channels. The 2-way communication between HAN devices and the smart meter sends messages that are encrypted by using the proposed novel hybrid one-dimensional chaotic map. The encryption strategy mainly consists of three steps. In the first step, the seed and the control parameters are initialized. The second phase generates two intermediate keys using the proposed hybrid chaotic map. In the last phase, we encrypt the message by applying permutation followed by diffusion using intermediate keys. The proposed encryption strategy is resistant to various attacks. The transactive energy market is an emerging development in energy economics built on advanced metering infrastructure. Data generated in this context is often required for market operations, while also being privacy sensitive. This dual concern has necessitated the development of various methods of obfuscation in order to maintain privacy while still facilitating operations. While data aggregation is a common approach in this context, many of the existing aggregation methods rely on additional network components or lack flexibility. In this paper, we introduce Cyclic Homomorphic Encryption Aggregation (CHEA), a secure aggregation protocol that eliminates the need for additional network components or complicated key distribution schemes, while providing additional capabilities compared to similar protocols. We validate our scheme with formal security analysis as well as a software simulation of a transactive energy network running the scheme. Results indicate that CHEA performs well in comparison to similar works, with minimal communication overheads. Additionally, CHEA retains all standard security properties held by other aggregation schemes, while improving flexibility and reducing infrastructural requirements. Our scheme operates on similar assumptions as other works, but current smart metering hardware lags in terms of processing power, making the scheme infeasible on the current generation of hardware. However, these capabilities should quickly advance to an accommodating state. With this in mind, and given the results, we believe CHEA is a strong candidate for aggregating transactive energy data. The increasing concern for environmental conservation has spurred government initiatives towards energy efficiency. One of the key research areas in this regard is demand response, particularly focusing on differential pricing initiatives such as Time-of-Use (ToU). Differential tariffs are typically designed based on mathematical or statistical models analyzing historical electricity price and consumption data. This study proposes a methodology for identifying time intervals suitable for implementing ToU energy tariffs, achieved by analyzing electric power demand variability to estimate demand flexibility potential. The methodology transforms consumption data into variation via the coefficient of variation and, then, employs k-means data analysis techniques and the a priori algorithm. Tested with real data from smart meters in the Colombian electrical system, the methodology successfully identified time intervals with potential for establishing ToU tariffs. Additionally, no direct relationship was found between external variables such as socioeconomic level, user type, climate, and consumption variability. Accurate line parameters are the basis for the optimal control and safety analysis of distribution networks. The lack of real-time monitoring equipment in grids has meant that data-driven identification methods have become the main tool to estimate line parameters. However, frequent network reconfigurations increase the uncertainty of distribution network topologies, creating challenges in the data-driven identification of line parameters. In this paper, a line parameter identification method compatible with an uncertain topology is proposed, which simplifies the model complexity of the joint identification of topology and line parameters by removing the unconnected branches through noise reduction. In order to improve the solving accuracy and efficiency of the identification model, a two-stage identification method is proposed. First, the initial values of the topology and line parameters are quickly obtained using a linear power flow model. Then, the identification results are modified iteratively based on the classical power flow model to achieve a more accurate estimation of the grid topology and line parameters. Finally, a simulation analysis based on IEEE 33- and 118-bus distribution systems demonstrated that the proposed method can effectively realize the estimation of topology and line parameters, and is robust with regard to both measurement errors and grid structures. In Internet of Things-based smart grids, smart meters record and report a massive number of power consumption data at certain intervals to the data center of the utility for load monitoring and energy management. Energy theft is a big problem for smart meters and causes non-technical losses. Energy theft attacks can be launched by malicious consumers by compromising the smart meters to report manipulated consumption data for less billing. It is a global issue causing technical and financial damage to governments and operators. Deep learning-based techniques can effectively identify consumers involved in energy theft through power consumption data. In this study, a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN)-based energy-theft-detection system is proposed to detect data-tampering cyber-attack vectors. CNN is a commonly employed method that automates the extraction of features and the classification process. We employed CNN for feature extraction and traditional machine learning algorithms for classification. In this work, honest data were obtained from a real dataset. Six attack vectors causing data tampering were utilized. Tampered data were synthetically generated through these attack vectors. Six separate datasets were created for each attack vector to design a specialized detector tailored for that specific attack. Additionally, a dataset containing all attack vectors was also generated for the purpose of designing a general detector. Furthermore, the imbalanced dataset problem was addressed through the application of the generative adversarial network (GAN) method. GAN was chosen due to its ability to generate new data closely resembling real data, and its application in this field has not been extensively explored. The data generated with GAN ensured better training for the hybrid CNN-based detector on honest and malicious consumption patterns. The Wi-SUN FAN (Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Network Field Area Network) standard is attracting great interest in various applications such as smart meters, smart cities and Internet of Things (IoT) devices due to the attractive features that the standard offers, such as multihop and mesh topologies, a relatively high data rate, frequency hopping, and interoperability between manufacturers. However, the process of connecting nodes in Wi-SUN FAN networks, which includes discovering, joining, and forming the network, has been shown to be slow, especially in multihop environments, which has motivated research and experimentation to analyze this process. In the existing literature, to measure network formation time, some authors have performed experiments with up to 100 devices, which is a costly and time-consuming methodology. Others have used simulation tools that are difficult to replicate, because little information is available about the methodology used or because they are proprietary. Despite these efforts, there is still a lack of information to adequately assess the formation time of Wi-SUN FAN networks, since the experimental tests reported in the literature are expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, alternatives such as computer simulation have been explored to speed up performance analysis in different scenarios. With this perspective, this paper is focused on the implementation of the Wi-SUN FAN network formation process using the Contiki-NG open source operating system and the Cooja simultor, where a functionality was added that makes it possible to efficiently analyze the network performance, thereby facilitating the implementation of new techniques to reduce network training time. The simulation tool was integrated into Contiki-NG and has been used to estimate the network formation times in various indoor environments. This paper introduces the first completely unsupervised methodology for non-intrusive load monitoring that does not rely on any additional data, making it suitable for real-life applications. The methodology includes an algorithm to efficiently decompose the aggregated energy load from households in events and algorithms based on expert knowledge to assign each of these events to four types of appliances: fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and washer/dryer. The methodology was developed to work with smart meters that have a granularity of 1 min and was evaluated using the Reference Energy Disaggregation Dataset. The results show that the algorithm can disaggregate the refrigerator with high accuracy and the usefulness of the proposed methodology to extract relevant features from other appliances, such as the power use and duration from the heating cycles of a dishwasher. A smart grid constitutes an electrical infrastructure that integrates communication technologies to optimize electricity production, distribution, and consumption. Within the smart grid, IEEE 802.11 networks play a crucial role in facilitating communication between smart meters and data collectors, operating within a shared transmission medium. However, a notable challenge arises due to the lack of certainty regarding the genuine identity of data recipients. In response, we present a solution—a novel covert channel leveraging the IEEE 802.11 backoff procedure—to transmit data that requires special protection. Implemented using the ns-3 simulator, our covert channel achieved a throughput of 140,000 bps when single covert station realized transmission in the wireless channel, and 880 bps in a populated environment characterized by high traffic volumes. This performance metric shows that our mechanism is better than other covert channels, where the performance in saturated conditions usually does not exceed several hundred bps. The introduction to this theme issue discusses a series of papers examining the increasing marketisation of social reproduction and its effects on systems that sustain human and social life. This is done by examining the frontiers, framings, and frictions that arise when market systems are constructed to enable capital accumulation in the realm of social reproduction. Frontiers identify the expansion of market logic into new areas, framings explore how financial actors attempt to bring the logic of social reproduction within the purview of market competition, and frictions highlight the various tensions that generate resistance to the roll out of market logics. Through establishing these three areas, we argue that both market structures and systems of social reproduction should be understood as geographically variegated and, at times, uncertain. This variegation necessitates an understanding of marketised social reproduction as forged through complex articulations of market and non-market logics. Using cases from surrogacy to smart electricity meters, the papers in this theme issue illustrate that while these articulations may generate benefits for some individuals, households and communities, such processes of marketisation can introduce new layers of inequity and undermine the ethical relations and social commitments that sustain life—in the service of enabling accumulation. The increasing demand for electricity in daily life highlights the need for Smart Cities (SC) to use energy efficiently. Both technical and Non‐Technical Losses (NTL), particularly those resulting from electricity theft, present powerful obstacles; NTL alone can reach billions of dollars. Although Machine Learning (ML) based approaches for NTL detection have been embraced by numerous utilities, there is still a lack of thorough analysis of these methods. Limited research exists on NTL identification evaluation criteria and unbalanced data management in the context of SC. This research compares ML algorithms and data balancing methods to optimize electricity consumption detection. The given research applied the 15 ML techniques of Logistic regression, Bernoulli naive Bayes, Gaussian naive Bayes, K‐Nearest Neighbour, perceptron, passive‐aggressive classifier, quadratic discriminant analysis, SGD classifier, ridge classifier, linear discriminant analysis, decision tree, nearest centroid classifier, multi‐nomial naive Bayes, complement naive Bayes and dummy classifier. While SMOTE, AdaSyn, NRAS, and CCR are considered for data balancing. AUC, F1‐score, and seven relevant performance metrics were used for comparison. We have also implemented SHapely Additive exPlanations (SHAP) for feature importance and model interpretation. The solution of the distribution system state estimation (DSSE) relies on the presence of physical measurements in real time. Sometimes, these measurements may not reach the control center due to the defects in meter functionality, the large communication time delays, and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks on communication channels. Addressing this issue, a novel deep learning (DL) approach is proposed by using a transformer model with the integration of bi-directional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) layer. The proposed model can be leveraged to forecast the unavailable measurement data, which maintains the observability of the system to obtain an accurate solution from DSSE. The superiority of the proposed model is probed by comparing it with other forecasting-based DL models at various percentages of missing measurement data. Further, the effectiveness of the proposed model is evaluated for forecasting the power injections of residential, commercial, and industrial loads as well as renewable energy sources. Finally, the solution of the DSSE is tested with forecasted data and compared with the results of the DSSE for the original measurement data. The simulations are performed on modified IEEE 13-node and IEEE 37-node test systems, and their corresponding results highlighted the superiority of the proposed model in the forecasting of the incomplete data. The massive deployment of smart meters in most Western countries in recent decades has allowed the creation and development of a significant variety of applications, mainly related to efficient energy management. The information provided about energy consumption has also been dedicated to the areas of social work and health. In this context, smart meters are considered single-point non-intrusive sensors that might be used to monitor the behaviour and activity patterns of people living in a household. This work describes the design of a short-term behavioural alarm generator based on the processing of energy consumption data coming from a commercial smart meter. The device captured data from a household for a period of six months, thus providing the consumption disaggregated per appliance at an interval of one hour. These data were used to train different intelligent systems, capable of estimating the predicted consumption for the next one-hour interval. Four different approaches have been considered and compared when designing the prediction system: a recurrent neural network, a convolutional neural network, a random forest, and a decision tree. By statistically analysing these predictions and the actual final energy consumption measurements, anomalies can be detected in the undertaking of three different daily activities: sleeping, breakfast, and lunch. The recurrent neural network achieves an F1-score of 0.8 in the detection of these anomalies for the household under analysis, outperforming other approaches. This paper deals with an energy metering system for electricity monitoring for each and every household that is different from the conventional energy meter. This proposed design is meant to be a better alternative for an efficient and more secure line for energy usage by the consumer without any illegal access to their connections so that they don't have to pay for something they aren't accountable for in the first place and protect the supplier/provider, which is the government, from incurring any losses from the theft as well as from customers who tamper with the meter values. These things are vital in today's world. So, we are taking this into account and designing a smart meter with the IoT technology for monitoring data values at the tip of our fingers, readily available at any moment. It serves many purposes, from the monitoring of energy consumption to easily using mobile phones to work on managing the energy usage according to their budget. It is also easy for the supplier to monitor without manually inspecting the location. The WiFi module ESP8266 is used for the purpose of transmitting the energy data to the server. This paper also deals with a smart grid system in which energy meters are used as a two-way communication system as opposed to conventional meters with one-way communication, which will be a more efficient system. This paper proposes three methods of the optimal smart meter selection for acting as a data concentrator in the automatic meter reading last mile network. The study explains the reasons why the selected smart meter should also act as a data concentrator, in addition to its basic role. To select the smart meter, either the reliability of communication or the speed of the automatic meter reading process was considered. Graph theory is employed to analyse the last mile network, described as sets of nodes and unreliable links. The frame error ratio was used to assess the unreliability whilst the number of hops was used to describe the speed of the reading process. The input data for the analysis are qualitative parameters determined based on observations in the real, operated last mile networks as well as their typical topological arrangements. The results of the research can be useful in the last mile network migration process, which uses concentrators to the networks without them, or during the process of newer last mile network implementation, where data concentrators are no longer applicable. This paper focuses on addressing the "last 100 metres" home delivery in rural areas, using a cooperated delivery method of drones and truck. Considering the constraints of drone load, drone energy consumption and customer time window, a mixed integer linear programming model is established to minimize the delivery cost. Owing to the computational complexity of this problem, a double ant colony optimization with neighbourhood search is proposed. First, the raw data are sorted and encoded. Second, the ant colony optimization with search operators is used to solve drone routes and truck route. Finally, the local search algorithm with search operators is used to solve the connection point between the drones and truck to obtain the cooperated delivery routes. Extensive experiments are conducted on the instances randomly generated in the Solomon dataset, and results demonstrate the proposed algorithm effectively solves problems within reasonable runtimes. Sensitivity analysis is conducted on factors that may affect the delivery cost of the solution and provide insights about drones participating in the "last hundred metres" home delivery service. At present, a higher rate of power consumption is caused by intelligent grid applications. Due to high power consumption, the system efficiency, as well as the energy rate of the system, was high. So, to reduce the power consumption rate and increase the system's efficiency, a novel Ant Lion-based Auto Encoder System (ALbAES) was developed in this research. With this model, the power consumption reduced and the system's efficiency is increased, and the parameters of the proposed model were obtained in a better range. This work initially pre-processed the power demand data sets to remove the noisy data. The smart grid and the control and monitoring features were extracted through feature extraction. Those extracted features were used in further processes. Moreover, the fitness of the extracted features was compared with the ant lion fitness. The calculation was done based on the ant lion optimization and the Autoencoder. Ideally, the system's efficiency was increased as 96% based on the fitness function of developed optimization algorithm. To detect the performance of the proposed model, the parameters in the proposed model were compared with the other existing models. The system's efficiency was improved, the rate of power flow was reduced, and the energy rate of the model was reduced. The objective of the presented paper is to verify economically justified levels of reactive energy compensation in the distribution network in the new market conditions, including the extensive use of smart metering systems, new types of load, or distributed generation. The proposed methodology is based on the minimization of annual costs of losses caused by the flow of reactive energy to the supplied loads through the equivalent resistance of the distribution system determined on the basis of statistical energy losses in this network. The costs of losses are compared to the costs of using compensating devices expressed by the levelized costs of reactive energy generation. The results are the relations describing the optimal annual average value of the tgφ factor to be maintained by customers to optimize the cost of loss of the distribution network caused by reactive energy flows. The dependence of the optimal tgφ value on the analyzed load and network parameters is also discussed. The resulting optimal tgφ levels should be considered in the tariffication process of services offered by distribution system operators to improve capacity and limit the costs of power network operation due to reactive energy transmission. Integrating the self‐healing capability realizes the automated protection of smart distribution systems. This article presents a fault location scheme for low voltage (LV) distribution systems based on the information collected from the smart meters. First, a fault condition is detected and classified by processing the current signal at the secondary side of the distribution transformer by an intelligent electronic device. Then, the faulty feeder and section are determined by calculating the fault‐imposed component of nodal voltages.
