The Smart Grid AMI is at the forefront of modernizing energy management for efficient energy distribution and maintaining grid reliability. However, the seamless flow of data within AMI introduces critical security challenges, necessitating innovative approaches to ensure secure data transmission. This paper addresses these challenges by proposing a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) based on Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) and Reinforcement Learning (RL) framework for secure data transmission within the Smart Grid AMI. Primarily, we formulate the routing problem as a MOO challenge with four primary objectives namely, energy efficiency, latency minimization, reliability, and security to capture the essence of efficient and secure data transmission. Further, we introduce an RL agent based on the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm for robust policy learning. The RL agent by exploring diverse routing actions and receiving rewards optimizes the routing decisions within the network environment based on the objectives specified in the multi-objective function (MOF). A novel MOF quantifies trade-offs between security and performance metrics, integrating QKD-based security metrics with traditional optimization objectives. This function guides the RL agent in making informed routing decisions. Through extensive simulations using the NS-2 simulator in a realistic Smart Grid AMI environment, the proposed approach obtained energy consumption of 750 J, latency of 55 ms, and security level of 96% and also revealed significant improvements compared to conventional techniques widely employed for secured communication in AMI networks. Overall, the simulation results exhibited that the proposed method showed outstanding performance by achieving energy efficiency of 0.95, latency reduction of 0.92, reliability improvement of 0.94, and security enhancement of 0.96. The development of the smart grid (SG) offers a way to improve the generation of electrical energy as well as the corresponding transmission and distribution. Due to the versatile nature, the installing of SG consumes less area and time when compared to traditional grids. The major aim of SG is to provide controllability of assets and grid observability and enhance the security and performance of power system. An integration of internet of things (IoT) in smart grid ensures intelligent features with reduced human intervention, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. In order to communicate the useful information with the internet and other web applications, IoT-enabled sensors are widely utilized in the power grid system, which enables better grid management. A photovoltaic (PV) system and a high-gain integrated Luo converter are included in the IoT-based power monitoring system for the smart grid that is recommended as a result of these variables. The maximum solar power is tracked with a help of grey wolf optimized artificial neural network (GWO-ANN) which aids in enhanced operation of converter. The obtained converter output is applied to 3 ϕ grid through a 3 ϕ voltage source inverter (VSI). The parameters like temperature, intensity, converter voltage and current, and grid voltage and current are monitored by sensors and further stored in IoT webpage. The random forest (RF) classifier is used for the prediction of shortest path through which the monitored data are transmitted. Summary: The past decade has brought prolific developments to power systems that range from large‐scale renewable integration to digital twins. Modern power systems consist of highly variable generation clusters. Hence, monitoring and prediction of power generation has become a vital part of today's power systems. On the other hand, detailed real‐time information of power usage is also a key parameter for the control algorithms used for the demand side management. With this information flow, power systems become smart grids which offer improved service and enable many advanced operations. In this regard, the home area network (HAN), which collects the power consumption/generation of household devices, plays a key role. So far, a number of technologies such as ZigBee, Z‐Wave, and Power Line Communication (PLC) have been considered for the HAN. Yet, widely used wireless local area network (WLAN) technology, Wi‐Fi, was not identified as a prominent candidate due to the limitations in its latency and reliability. However, with the introduction of the IEEE 802.11ax standard, Wi‐Fi 6 was developed, and it demonstrates guaranteed latency and reliability for its users. Thus, with its widespread deployment in households, Wi‐Fi is becoming a natural candidate for HAN. In this article, we present a comprehensive HAN protocol based on Wi‐Fi 6 which can achieve guaranteed latency and reliability for HAN users. System requirements can occasionally be ill-defined and difficult to define. In this case, graphic representation of the system created using semi-formal modelling is advantageous. A smart power grid, for example, includes numerous important needs and function points. We can portray the system functionalities graphically to better grasp the requirements before moving forward with the formal definition. Though, graphic models like Unified Modeling Language (UML) have ambiguity issues as they work on predefined rules. On the other hand, the formal technique uses the correct-by-construction method to guarantee the system's dependability. The formal technique is based on well-practiced mathematical notation. In this article, a smart grid (SG) system based on blockchain (BC) is formally modelled and verified. The system requirements are validated using the formal modelling technique Event-B. To illustrate the system, we first suggest various graphical notations. After that, the notations are translated into a JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) format. Demand response management (DRM) plays a crucial role in the prospective development of smart grids. The precise estimation of electricity demand for individual houses is vital for optimizing the operation and planning of the power system. Accurate forecasting of the required components holds significance as it can substantially impact the final cost, mitigate risks, and support informed decision-making. In this paper, a forecasting approach employing neural networks for smart grid demand-side management is proposed. The study explores various enhanced artificial neural network (ANN) architectures for forecasting smart grid consumption. The performance of the ANN approach in predicting energy demands is evaluated through a comparison with three statistical models: a time series model, an auto-regressive model, and a hybrid model. In the context of rapidly increasing energy demands and environmental concerns, optimizing energy management in commercial buildings is a critical challenge. Smart grids, empowered by advanced Energy Management Systems (EMS), play a pivotal role in addressing this challenge through Demand Side Management (DSM). However, the efficiency of DSM-based building EMS is often limited by the accuracy of load forecasting. This paper addresses this gap by exploring load forecasting models within DSM-based building EMS, focusing on a case study in a commercial building in Ankara, Turkey. Employing Deep Learning (DL) models for load forecasting, we provide inputs for rule-based controllers to enhance energy efficiency. Our major contribution is the development of the ANFIS-IC algorithm, aimed at maximizing demand response participation in commercial buildings. ANFIS-IC, integrating ANFIS controllers with LSTM-based load consumption forecasts, leads to a 33.14% reduction in energy consumption and a 39.22% decrease in energy costs, surpassing the performance of rule-based controllers alone which achieve reductions of 25.34% in energy consumption and 34.03% in energy costs. These findings not only highlight the potential of integrating rule-based controllers with deep learning algorithms but also underscore the importance of accurate load forecasting in improving the effectiveness of DSM-based building EMS. This work presents an improvement of the incremental conductance technique by adding PI controllers optimized by the recent equilibrium optimization algorithm. It addresses the main weaknesses of the incremental conductance algorithm consisting of the choice of step-size and the elimination of oscillations around the MPP. The proposed approach makes the MPPT control more dynamic and self-adaptive against the atmospheric conditions change. It has been applied for a photovoltaic generator, the thermoelectric generator and for the hybridization of the two generators. The simulation results, and the comparative study with the optimized step-size P&O and Incremental conductance methods, prove the efficiency and superiority of the proposed technique in terms of energy extraction and speed. Summary A novel hybrid‐multiplexed fifteen‐switch converter (HM‐15SC) topology, which can simultaneously output a set of three‐phase AC and three sets of DC, is proposed to address the problems of a single type of power electronic converter and the complexity of coordinated control of AC/DC hybrid systems for smart grid. In this paper, we conduct a detailed analysis of the topology and operating principles of HM‐15SC. This includes an examination of the converter's effective switching states in relation to output voltage, current paths, and maximum voltage stress. In addition, a modulation strategy combining single‐leg independent model prediction current control (SL‐MPCC) and time‐sharing cooperative (TSC) ideas is proposed to establish a single‐leg AC current prediction model, which effectively reduces the prediction arithmetic under the premise of realizing three‐leg independent prediction control and optimal control of AC/DC hybrid outputs. A cyber range provides a controlled environment for simulating mission-critical systems for cybersecurity research following the high risks involved in conducting experiments in real-life systems. Existing cyber ranges do not provide close emulation of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) in the Smart Grid Networks (SGNs), with emphasis on industry-based proprietary and IED protocols. This paper presents CyberGrid Testbed – a virtual Cyber-Range developed by the CyberSCADA Research Laboratory at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, which emulates Substation Automation processes with IEC61850 and Modbus/TCP protocols and support for MMS, and IED. As IoT metering devices become increasingly prevalent, the smart energy grid encounters challenges associated with the transmission of large volumes of data affecting the latency of control services and the secure delivery of energy. Offloading computational work towards the edge is a viable option; however, effectively coordinating service execution on edge nodes presents significant challenges due to the vast search space making it difficult to identify optimal decisions within a limited timeframe. In this research paper, we utilize the whale optimization algorithm to decide and select the optimal edge nodes for executing services' computational tasks. We employ a directed acyclic graph to model dependencies among computational nodes, data network links, smart grid energy assets, and energy network organization, thereby facilitating more efficient navigation within the decision space to identify the optimal solution. The offloading decision variables are represented as a binary vector, which is evaluated using a fitness function considering round-trip time and the correlation between edge-task computational resources. To effectively explore offloading strategies and prevent convergence to suboptimal solutions, we adapt the feedback mechanisms, an inertia weight coefficient, and a nonlinear convergence factor. The evaluation results are promising, demonstrating that the proposed solution can effectively consider both energy and data network constraints while enduring faster decision-making for optimization, with notable improvements in response time and a low average execution time of approximately 0.03 s per iteration. Wi-Fi networks within the smart grid play a vital role in enabling communication between smart meters and data collectors. They are also frequently used in automation and metering, distribution control and monitoring, and distribution protection. However, a significant challenge arises from the uncertainty surrounding the genuine identity of data recipients. In this paper, we propose an efficient and novel covert channel that leverages the IEEE 802.11 DCF to transmit data requiring a high level of security. It is also the world's first covert channel supporting quality of service (QoS). Our protocol was implemented and tested in the ns-3 simulator, achieving very high-performance results. Its performance remains robust even under saturated network conditions with additional background traffic generated by other stations. The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has recently become the norm in medical operations and emergency situations. A physician or a medical personnel is interested in accessing the patients' data from remote locations using IoMT. The patients' medical management system should allow their doctors and family members to have access to the data, especially in emergency situations. Deploying sensor nodes and managing the large amount of medical data generated by these sensors require a system that provides protection against known security threats and a robust mechanism to recover when subjected to attacks. The proposed scheme that provides mutual authentication between user(s) and power generation nodes, and also mitigate against attacks by validating the identity during the authentication phase. Moreover, the proposed scheme, called Grid‐Based Authentication, uses the existing smart grid infrastructure for communications, which is a model of integrated infrastructure in a smart city. Nowadays, it is evident that the traditional power grid system is changing to smart grid in a revolutionary and evolutionary manner. Compared to other systems, advanced metering infrastructure has three distinctive features that must be carefully considered, including hybrid mode of message transmission, constraints on the computation and storage capability of smart meters ( S M s ) and variable number of participants in demand response (DR) projects. In order to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability, an efficient and robust scheme for key management is required for secure two-way transmission between S M s and data control unit ( D C U ), which is still an unsolved problem. To deal with the security requirements and consider the specific features, this paper proposes a novel key management scheme that drastically reduces the computation cost of the D C U and S M s . Further, in the proposed scheme, there is no need to change the keys of existing S M s when a S M joins/leaves the group. Therefore, the computation cost of D C U and S M s for updating the keys is reduced to O (1). Unconditional security for smart grids is defined. Cryptanalyses of the watermarked security of smart grids indicate that watermarking cannot guarantee unconditional security unless the communication within the grid system is unconditionally secure. The successful attack against the dynamically watermarked smart grid remains valid even with the presence of internal noise from the grid. An open question arises if unconditionally authenticated secure communications within the grid, together with tamper resistance of the critical elements, are satisfactory conditions to provide unconditional security for the grid operation. In the Industry 4.0 era of smart grids, the real-world problem of blackouts and cascading failures due to cyberattacks is a significant concern and highly challenging because the existing Intrusion Detection System (IDS) falls behind in handling missing rates, response times, and detection accuracy. Addressing this problem with an early attack detection mechanism with a reduced missing rate and decreased response time is critical. The development of an Intelligent IDS is vital to the mission-critical infrastructure of a smart grid to prevent physical sabotage and processing downtime. This paper aims to develop a robust Anomaly-based IDS using a statistical approach with a machine learning classifier to discriminate cyberattacks from natural faults and man-made events to avoid blackouts and cascading failures. The novel mechanism of a statistical approach with a machine learning (SAML) classifier based on Neighborhood Component Analysis, ExtraTrees, and AdaBoost for feature extraction, bagging, and boosting, respectively, is proposed with optimal hyperparameter tuning for the early discrimination of cyberattacks from natural faults and man-made events. The proposed model is tested using the publicly available Industrial Control Systems Cyber Attack Power System (Triple Class) dataset with a three-bus/two-line transmission system from Mississippi State University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Furthermore, the proposed model is evaluated for scalability and generalization using the publicly accessible IEEE 14-bus and 57-bus system datasets of False Data Injection (FDI) attacks. With the development of smart grids and new power systems, the combination of non-intrusive load identification technology and smart home technology can provide users with the operating conditions of home appliances and equipment, thus reducing home energy loss and improving users' ability to demand a response. This paper proposes a non-intrusive load decomposition model with a parallel multiscale attention mechanism (PMAM). The model can extract both local and global feature information and fuse it through a parallel multiscale network. This improves the attention mechanism's ability to capture feature information over long time periods. To validate the model's decomposition ability, we combined the PMAM model with four benchmark models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network model, the Time Pooling-based Load Disaggregation Model (TPNILM), the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and the Load Disaggregation Model without Parallel Multi-scalar Attention Mechanisms (UNPMAM). The model was trained on the publicly available UK-DALE dataset and tested. The models' test results were quantitatively evaluated using a confusion matrix. This involved calculating the F1 score of the load decomposition. A higher F1 score indicates better model decomposition performance. The results indicate that the PMAM model proposed in this paper maintains an F1 score above 0.9 for the decomposition of three types of electrical equipment under the same household user, which is 3% higher than that of the other benchmark models on average. In the cross-household test, the PMAM also demonstrated a better decomposition ability, with the F1 score maintained above 0.85, and the mean absolute error (MAE) decreased by 5.3% on average compared with that of the UNPMAM. It is crucial to evaluate and anticipate stability under various conditions, as the ability to stabilize a smart grid (SG) is one of its key features for assessing the effectiveness of its design. Intelligent approaches to stability forecasting are necessary to mitigate inadvertent instability in SG design. This is particularly crucial with the expansion of residential and commercial infrastructures, along with the growing integration of renewable energies into these grids. Predicting the stability of SGs is currently a major challenge. The concept of an SG encompasses a broad range of emerging technologies in which artificial intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role and is increasingly being utilized in light of the limitations of conventional methods. It empowers informed decision-making and adaptable responses to fluctuations in customer energy needs, unexpected power outages, rapid changes in renewable energy generation, or any unforeseen crises within an SG system. In this paper, we propose a symmetric approach to enhance SG stability by integrating various machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms, where symmetry is observed in the balanced application of these diverse computational techniques to predict and ensure the grid's stability. These algorithms utilized a dataset containing the simulation results of the SG stability. The learning phase of these algorithms is based on imprecise and unreliable data. To overcome this limitation, the fusion of classifiers can be a powerful approach to modeling inaccurate and uncertain data, providing more robust and reliable predictions than individual classifiers. Voting and Dempster–Shafer (DS) methods, two commonly used techniques in ensemble learning, were employed and compared. The results show that the use of the fusion of distinct classifiers with voting theory achieves an accuracy of 99.8% and outperforms several other methods including the DS method. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) face significant challenges related to dependability, integrity, and confidentiality due to their widespread deployment. Intrusion detection emerges as a pivotal active defense technology to fortify the security of WSNs. Given the unique characteristics of WSNs, achieving a balance between precise data transmission and the limited energy resources of sensors, as well as between effective detection and optimal utilization of network resources, becomes imperative. In this research, we propose a fog computing-based intrusion detection system (IDS) tailored for a smart power grid environment. The primary focus of this article is to elucidate the application of IDS within the context of a smart grid. We present a novel stacked model based on ensemble learning algorithms, adept at accurately delineating the interconnections among fog nodes susceptible to cyber-attacks. To validate the efficacy of our approach, we conduct a series of comparative experiments utilizing the KDD-Cup-99 dataset with cross-validation. Our findings reveal that the Fog-IDS and Stacking-based approaches significantly enhance the performance of the IDS. Through simulations, we substantiate that our proposed approach effectively analyzes fog nodes using the deployed IDS, enabling the prediction of energy requirements at refill stations. Achieving an impressive accuracy rate exceeding 99.837%, MCC rate of 99.73%, and F1-score rate of 99.827%, our study underscores the robustness and reliability of the Fog-IDS and Stacking-based methods in augmenting IDS performance in WSNs. This paper presents a systematic literature review on the application of digital twins in the energy sector. Initially, we generated an overview through a survey of prior reviews, independent of market vertical, then followed by a more detailed review concentrating on the power production and distribution domains, as per the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) smart grid standard. We implemented a rigorous method, which included seven stages, beginning with the collection of 2238 articles. We observed that the energy sector range was too broad and filtered by generation and distribution during the practical screening, resulting in 275 for further screening. This amount was then condensed to 81 papers that matched the quality screening criteria for synthesis and examination. In summary, digital twin architectures and frameworks include five components: the physical entity, bidirectional communication, the virtual entity (with modeling and simulation), data management, and services. Our study contributed by determining that distribution management is the most pertinent application of digital twins in the distribution domain and fault diagnosis in the generation domain. Furthermore, we found that digital twins involve multiple stakeholders whose role is rarely discussed in studies, and we identified a similar absence of emphasis for security. Research on security often presents the digital twin as an additional layer of protection, yet rarely investigates the security of the digital twin by itself. The potential limitations of our study to answer some of the technical research questions may be because of the criteria for the selection of papers. During the construction of smart grids, due to technological limitations, traditional sequential control systems have been unable to meet the needs of grid operation, exposing problems such as single control methods and functions, low operational efficiency, inability to independently complete complex tasks, and poor anti-interference ability, which in turn affect the power supply quality and operational stability of the grid, and fail to truly achieve the reliability, safety, and reliability of smart grids Economic and efficient goals. As a modern power grid that integrates advanced communication technology, sensor measurement technology, and intelligent control technology, the smart grid has good economy, reliability, and stability. Building a strong smart grid has important strategic significance for developing the national economy and improving Comprehensive National Power. The balance of electricity supply and demand, as a physical feature of the power system, determines the energy matching relationship between generation and consumption. Unreasonable power generation may lead to unmet electricity demand, as well as excess electricity and waste of resources. The energy storage has solved the problem of imbalance between supply and demand in most environments. The energy storage equipment provides a buffer space for electric energy, effectively adjusts the time unevenness of power grid load, realizes peak shaving and valley filling, and reduces the operation cost of the power grid. Taking the aboveground energy storage power station as the research object, the 3-D unsteady model of the small and medium-sized compressed energy storage system was established by using the FLUENT simulation software, and the correctness was verified through experimental methods. The influence of different environmental temperatures, chamber inflation flow rate, the thermodynamic characteristics of the surface condition and working chamber of the and energy storage were studied. The results show that the environmental temperature and expansion flow of oil storage chamber have important effects on its thermodynamic characteristics, while the surface conditions of oil storage chamber wall have little effect on its thermodynamic characteristics. Ever-increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the power grids, alongside their numerous benefits, brings new challenges that call for enhanced solutions in the field of control and management of power grids. The majority of the available research have considered either distribution or transmission grids in their studies. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the effects of DERs on the distribution and transmission grids is performed. The focus of this paper is on hierarchical management methods in order to categorize different approaches and highlight the gaps. Moreover, a review is conducted in the field of the newly introduced distributed energy resources management system (DERMS) concept. A DERMS can facilitate the hierarchical energy management procedure due to its functionalities and broad capabilities. Hence, its implementation in energy management and its impact on the power grid will be assessed with the aid of a co-simulation platform that considers both transmission and distribution grids. In this paper, we describe a solution that has been developed to create an intelligent software platform for the optimal management of energy trade (specifically a P2P trade) in microgrids. Furthermore, the choice of a solution based on the architecture of two-level hierarchical systems using the restrictions and recommendations of the control center is substantiated. A general functional design of the platform is proposed using blockchain technology and cyber security solutions. The proposed solution includes the technical specification of the presented platform using the game theory model as a special case without loss of generality. The enhanced learning method was used to simulate customer behavior. Simulation of the platform operation was carried out using the example of optimizing the peak-to-average network load by users making individual decisions using game theory algorithms. The simulation results of the implementation of scenarios with and without recommendations confirmed that the proposed model provides a better peak-to-average ratio (PAR) in the network. Smart grid (SG) is proposed as a solution to the problems of production, distribution, monitoring, and control of the electricity in traditional power grids. The privacy-preserving framework proposes a novel secure compressive sensing technique to secure the data and integrated blockchain with interplanetary file system (IPFS) authenticated decision rules for storage and retrieval. Blockchain is a distributed-ledger technology that records transactions in chronological sequence and does not allow for any modifications. The technology is popular because of its robust features. Use of blockchain provides irrefutable tamper proof storage for the transactions. IPFS is used due to its higher computation time for storing the data. Through experimental study, it was discovered that the suggested method offers greater resilience against data security assaults at comparative savings of 12.4% on computing, 15% on communication, and 19.9% on storage. As an important component of the smart grid, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) networks can deliver diverse auxiliary services and enhance the overall resilience of electrical power systems. However, V2G networks face two main challenges due to a large number of devices that connect to it. First, V2G networks suffer from serious security threats, such as doubtful authenticity and privacy leakage. Second, the efficiency will decrease significantly due to the massive requirements of authentication. To tackle these problems, this paper proposes a cross-domain authentication scheme for V2G networks based on consortium blockchain and certificateless signature technology. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in integrating the smart grid concept into railway networks, which has been driven by the need to enhance energy efficiency and reduce air pollution in such energy-intensive systems. Consequently, experts have actively sought innovative solutions with which to tackle these challenges. One promising strategy involves integrating renewable energy sources (RESs), energy storage systems (ESSs), and electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) into current electric railway systems (ERSs). This study begins by examining the concept of implementing smart grids in railway systems through bibliometric analysis. It then delves into the realization of a hybrid railway microgrid (H-RMG) designed to enhance power flow capacities, improve energy efficiency, and address power quality issues in traditional AC railway networks. This paper introduces various future AC–DC-coupled hybrid railway microgrid (ADH-RMG) architectures centered around a shared DC bus acting as a DC hub for upgrading conventional AC railway systems utilizing interfacing static converters. This research incorporates an electricity market model based on a stochastic allocation of distributed resources and the analysis of an optimal demand response for a smart microgrid. This research develops a methodology that allows the application and comparison of various demand-response mechanisms and the analysis of the differences between them and the case of no-demand response, emphasizing economics, environmental care, demand curves, and other factors. By enabling more active participation by residential users of the smart microgrid, these demand-response methods help to flatten the demand curve and support the goals set by the electricity market model. Both conventional and non-conventional generators compete in the electricity market, with renewable energy sources preferred to encourage green generation. Metering anomalies not only mean huge economic losses but also indicate the faults of equipment and power lines, especially within the substation. As a result, metering anomaly diagnosis is becoming one of the most important missions in smart grids. However, due to the insufficient and imbalanced anomaly cases, identifying the anomalies in smart meter data accurately and efficiently remains challenging. Existing methods usually employ few-shot learning models in computer vision directly, which requires the rich experience of human experts and sufficient abnormal cases for training. It blocks model generalizing to various application scenarios. To address these shortcomings, we propose a novel framework for metering anomaly diagnosis based on few-shot learning, named FSMAD. Firstly, we design a fault data injection model to emulate anomalies, so that no abnormal samples are required in the training phase. Secondly, we provide a learnable variable transformation to reveal inherent relationships among various smart meter data and help FSMAD extract more efficient features. Finally, the deeper metric network is equipped to support FSMAD in obtaining powerful comparison capability. Due to recent technical breakthroughs in wireless communication and the Internet of Things (IoT), the smart grid (SG) has been recognized as a next-generation network for intelligent and efficient electric power transmission. Electric vehicle charging is becoming one of the most popular SG application. However, in SG environment the communication between a vehicle user and smart meter is mostly performed using insecure channel for managing demand response during peak hours. This raises serious security and privacy issues. Motivated from the aforementioned challenges, this paper presents a secure and privacy-preserving framework for IoT-enabled SG environment. The proposed framework first uses a secure mutual authentication scheme to register and exchange session key among SG participants. Second, a deep learning method that uses a stacked sparse denoising autoencoder to convert data into a new encoded format is suggested. The attention-based truncated long short-term memory uses this modified data to identify intrusions. The proposed blockchain architecture uses the proof of authentication consensus mechanism to propagate regular transactions in order to validate data integrity and prevent data poisoning attacks. Home area network (HAN) devices send the electricity consumption and other important data to the smart meter that must remain confidential from other devices. This paper proposes a novel one-dimensional hybrid chaotic map. The proposed map shows excellent chaotic properties when analyzed by bifurcation diagram, Lyapunov exponent & Shannon entropy. We further design an encryption strategy for data transfers between the smart meter and HAN devices. The proposed encryption scheme uses the existing lightweight key management in advanced metering infrastructure (LKM-AMI) architecture for data transfers, in which the encrypted data is transferred through an insecure channel and private keys are provided by trusted third party (TTP) through secure channels. The 2-way communication between HAN devices and the smart meter sends messages that are encrypted by using the proposed novel hybrid one-dimensional chaotic map. The encryption strategy mainly consists of three steps. In the first step, the seed and the control parameters are initialized. The second phase generates two intermediate keys using the proposed hybrid chaotic map. In the last phase, we encrypt the message by applying permutation followed by diffusion using intermediate keys. The proposed encryption strategy is resistant to various attacks. The transactive energy market is an emerging development in energy economics built on advanced metering infrastructure. Data generated in this context is often required for market operations, while also being privacy sensitive. This dual concern has necessitated the development of various methods of obfuscation in order to maintain privacy while still facilitating operations. While data aggregation is a common approach in this context, many of the existing aggregation methods rely on additional network components or lack flexibility. In this paper, we introduce Cyclic Homomorphic Encryption Aggregation (CHEA), a secure aggregation protocol that eliminates the need for additional network components or complicated key distribution schemes, while providing additional capabilities compared to similar protocols. We validate our scheme with formal security analysis as well as a software simulation of a transactive energy network running the scheme. Results indicate that CHEA performs well in comparison to similar works, with minimal communication overheads. Additionally, CHEA retains all standard security properties held by other aggregation schemes, while improving flexibility and reducing infrastructural requirements. Our scheme operates on similar assumptions as other works, but current smart metering hardware lags in terms of processing power, making the scheme infeasible on the current generation of hardware. However, these capabilities should quickly advance to an accommodating state. With this in mind, and given the results, we believe CHEA is a strong candidate for aggregating transactive energy data. In Internet of Things-based smart grids, smart meters record and report a massive number of power consumption data at certain intervals to the data center of the utility for load monitoring and energy management. Energy theft is a big problem for smart meters and causes non-technical losses. Energy theft attacks can be launched by malicious consumers by compromising the smart meters to report manipulated consumption data for less billing. It is a global issue causing technical and financial damage to governments and operators. Deep learning-based techniques can effectively identify consumers involved in energy theft through power consumption data. In this study, a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN)-based energy-theft-detection system is proposed to detect data-tampering cyber-attack vectors. CNN is a commonly employed method that automates the extraction of features and the classification process. We employed CNN for feature extraction and traditional machine learning algorithms for classification. In this work, honest data were obtained from a real dataset. Six attack vectors causing data tampering were utilized. Tampered data were synthetically generated through these attack vectors. Six separate datasets were created for each attack vector to design a specialized detector tailored for that specific attack. Additionally, a dataset containing all attack vectors was also generated for the purpose of designing a general detector. Furthermore, the imbalanced dataset problem was addressed through the application of the generative adversarial network (GAN) method. GAN was chosen due to its ability to generate new data closely resembling real data, and its application in this field has not been extensively explored. The data generated with GAN ensured better training for the hybrid CNN-based detector on honest and malicious consumption patterns. The power grid operators collect the data on a smart grid via the phasor measurement unit (PMU), which is placed at several points on the bus. However, the data at the PMU is prone to bad data; to classify that data, a detection scheme must be executed in the server system. The events in PMU data were subjected to several transmission conditions in the distribution system, and detecting those conditions is the major need for research. Hence to cope with that, a multi-level classification of synchrophasor's data is proposed in this paper. An agglomerative clustering-based extreme gradient boosting (AXGBoost) classifier is proposed for a multi-level classification. The puzzle optimization method updates the probability of a data line point to the agglomerative cluster detector. The model is analyzed on IEEE 14 and 39 bus system PMU data for classification and evaluation of a model. As a result, the classification accuracy of 99.49% is obtained for IEEE 14 bus, while the accuracy for IEEE 39 bus is 99.74%, which is comparably higher than the 14 bus system. Distributed energy resources have demonstrated their potential to mitigate the limitations of large, centralized generation systems. This is achieved through the geographical distribution of generation sources that capitalize on the potential of their respective environments to satisfy local demand. In a microgrid, the control problem is inherently distributed, rendering traditional control techniques inefficient due to the impracticality of central governance. Instead, coordination among its components is essential. The challenge involves enabling these components to operate under optimal conditions, such as charging batteries with surplus solar energy or deactivating controllable loads when market prices rise. Consequently, there is a pressing need for innovative distributed strategies like emergent control. Inspired by phenomena such as the environmentally responsive behavior of ants, emergent control involves decentralized coordination schemes. This paper introduces an emergent control strategy for microgrids, grounded in the response threshold model, to establish an autonomous distributed control approach. The results, utilizing our methodology, demonstrate seamless coordination among the diverse components of a microgrid. For instance, system resilience is evident in scenarios where, upon the failure of certain components, others commence operation. Moreover, in dynamic conditions, such as varying weather and economic factors, the microgrid adeptly adapts to meet demand fluctuations. Our emergent control scheme enhances response times, performance, and on/off delay times. In various test scenarios, Integrated Absolute Error (IAE) metrics of approximately 0.01% were achieved, indicating a negligible difference between supplied and demanded energy. Furthermore, our approach prioritizes the utilization of renewable sources, increasing their usage from 59.7% to 86.1%. A smart grid constitutes an electrical infrastructure that integrates communication technologies to optimize electricity production, distribution, and consumption. Within the smart grid, IEEE 802.11 networks play a crucial role in facilitating communication between smart meters and data collectors, operating within a shared transmission medium. However, a notable challenge arises due to the lack of certainty regarding the genuine identity of data recipients. In response, we present a solution—a novel covert channel leveraging the IEEE 802.11 backoff procedure—to transmit data that requires special protection. Implemented using the ns-3 simulator, our covert channel achieved a throughput of 140,000 bps when single covert station realized transmission in the wireless channel, and 880 bps in a populated environment characterized by high traffic volumes. This performance metric shows that our mechanism is better than other covert channels, where the performance in saturated conditions usually does not exceed several hundred bps. Energy management systems (EMSs) play a central role in improving the performance of microgrids by ensuring their efficient operation while minimizing operational costs and environmental impacts. This paper presents a comprehensive study of mixed integer linear programming (MILP) based EMSs developed and implemented in MATLAB 2021a using YALMIP software for the energy management of a new positive energy district in the city of Savona, Italy, as part of the Interreg Alpine Space Project ALPGRIDS. The main objective of this research is to optimize the functioning of the microgrid, focusing on cost efficiency and environmental sustainability. In pursuit of this objective, the EMS undergoes comprehensive testing and analysis, replicating actual conditions and addressing the diverse demands of end-users across typical days throughout the year, considering real electricity selling and purchase prices. The EMS also accounts for the reactive power capabilities of the various technologies integrated into the microgrid. The levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) serves as a metric for assessing curtailment costs, while penalties related to reactive power absorption from the distribution network are appraised in alignment with prevailing regulatory guidelines. The case study provides valuable insights into the practical implementation of EMS technology in microgrids and demonstrates its potential for sustainable energy management in complex urban energy districts. The essential role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in modern electricity grids makes it necessary to consider them when evaluating the scalability and replicability capabilities of smart grid systems. This paper proposes a novel step-by-step methodology to quantitatively perform an ICT scalability and replicability analysis (SRA) in a smart grid context. The methodology is validated and exemplified by applying it to two real case studies that are demonstrated in the EU-funded RESPONSE project and comprise solutions relying on different communication technologies. The rapid integration of renewable and decentralized energy sources is transforming the operation of power networks, leading to challenges in efficient electricity utilization, optimal harnessing of renewable energy, and maintaining stable voltage levels. Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is a fundamental functional module of Smart Grid that supports mutual communication between customers and electric companies. In order to secure AMI communication, scholars have proposed many key management schemes, some of which suffer from security issues or high costs. Recently, Mohammadali et al. proposed a key establishment NIKE protocol based on Elliptic Curve Cryptography. In this paper, we demonstrate that the protocol is vulnerable to both replay and tampering attacks and does not provide user anonymity. For the security vulnerabilities of the NIKE protocol, we propose an improvement scheme. And the proposed scheme is analyzed and verified for security based on the random oracle model and formal tools. In the context of the smart grid, efforts were made to reduce network loss in distributed generation (DG) distribution networks and enhance grid security. To accomplish this, three security evaluation indexes were proposed. “ single branch security coefficient”, “ minimum security coefficient”, and “ average security coefficient ”. Additionally, a mathematical model for the reconfiguration of the distribution network was established, with network loss, “average security coefficient”, and “minimum security coefficient” as the objectives. The problem is addressed using an improved rat swarm optimization algorithm. To address the issue of excessive iterations in the random initial population of the traditional rat swarm algorithm, an ordered ring network was utilized in conjunction with heuristic rules to generate an initial solution during the initialization stage. To mitigate the problem of generating numerous invalid variations during the operation process, a “ mapping rule” was proposed to maximize the utilization of rat swarm variation rules. Moreover, an “optimal individual fine-tuning strategy” was introduced to ensure that the final result is optimized to the best possible outcome, avoiding suboptimal solutions. Wireless sensor network (WSN) underpinning the smart-grid Internet of Things (SG-IoT) has been a popular research topic in recent years due to its great potential for enabling a wide range of important applications. However, the energy consumption (EC) characteristic of sensor nodes is a key factor that affects the operational performance (e.g., lifetime of sensors) and the total cost of ownership of WSNs. In this paper, to find the modulation techniques suitable for WSNs, we investigate the EC characteristic of continuous phase modulation (CPM), which is an attractive modulation scheme candidate for WSNs because of its constant envelope property. We first develop an EC model for the sensor nodes of WSNs by considering the circuits and a typical communication protocol that relies on automatic repeat request (ARQ)-based retransmissions to ensure successful data delivery. Then, we use this model to analyze the EC characteristic of CPM under various configurations of modulation parameters. Furthermore, we compare the EC characteristic of CPM with that of other representative modulation schemes, such as offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), which are commonly used in communication protocols of WSNs. Our analysis and simulation results provide insights into the EC characteristics of multiple modulation schemes in the context of WSNs; thus, they are beneficial for designing energy-efficient SG-IoT in the beyond-5G (B5G) and the 6G era. The implementation of power line communications (PLC) in smart electricity grids provides us with exciting opportunities for real-time cable monitoring. In particular, effective fault classification and estimation methods employing machine learning (ML) models have been proposed in the recent past. Often, the research works presenting PLC for ML-aided cable diagnostics are based on the study of synthetically generated channel data. In this work, we validate ML-aided diagnostics by integrating measured channels. Specifically, we consider the concatenation of clustering as a data pre-processing procedure and principal component analysis (PCA)-based dimension reduction for cable anomaly detection. Clustering and PCA are trained with measurement data when the PLC network is working under healthy conditions. A possible cable anomaly is then identified from the analysis of the PCA reconstruction error for a test sample. For the numerical evaluation of our scheme, we apply an experimental setup in which we introduce degradations to power cables. Fifth-generation networks promise wide availability of wireless communication with inherent security features. The 5G standards also outline access for different applications requiring low latency, machine-to-machine communication, or mobile broadband. These networks can be advantageous to numerous applications that require widespread and diverse communications. One such application is found in smart grids. Smart grid networks, and Operational Technology (OT) networks in general, utilize a variety of communication protocols for low-latency control, data monitoring, and reporting at every level. Transitioning these network communications from wired Wide Area Networks (WANs) to wireless communication through 5G can provide additional benefits to their security and network configurability. However, introducing these wireless capabilities may also result in a degradation of network latency. In this paper, we propose utilizing 5G for smart grid communications, and we evaluate the latency impacts of encapsulating GOOSE, Modbus, and DNP3 for transmission over a 5G network. The OpenAirInterface open-source library is utilized to deploy an in-lab 5G Core Network and gNB for testing with off-the-shelf User Equipment (UE). This creates an effective 5G test platform for experimenting with different OT protocols such as GOOSE. The results are validated by measuring two different Intelligent Electronic Devices' contact closure times for each network configuration. These tests are also conducted for varying packet sizes in order to isolate different sources of network latency. Our study outlines the latency impact of communication over 5G for time-critical and non-critical applications regarding their transition toward private 5G-based OT network implementations. The conducted experiments illustrate that in the case of GOOSE packets, simple encapsulation may exceed the protocol's time-critical nature, and, therefore, additional measures must be taken to ensure a viable transition of GOOSE to 5G services. Over the last decade, technological advances in smart grids have permitted the modernization of legacy electricity networks. As Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart grids are becoming an efficient response to managing changing electric demand, the heterogeneous network of equipment required to make these Cyber-Physical Systems a reality poses some security threats. This paper proposes a novel mutual authentication and key agreement scheme to ensure communications security and protect users' privacy in smart grid applications. In the proposed scheme (named EPSG), an elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) module and a physical unclonable function (PUF) are used simultaneously to provide acceptable confidentiality and integrity levels. The security analysis demonstrates that the EPSG has a robust security posture regarding transferred messages on the communication channel and physical attacks. In addition, EPSG is resistant to modeling attacks as one of the main vulnerabilities of PUF modules. Furthermore, by implementing the EPSG on an Arduino UNO microcontroller, a comparative performance evaluation (e.g., Time 156 ms, Communication cost 1408 bits, and Energy consumption 13.728 mJ) demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed EPSG. This paper deals with an energy metering system for electricity monitoring for each and every household that is different from the conventional energy meter. This proposed design is meant to be a better alternative for an efficient and more secure line for energy usage by the consumer without any illegal access to their connections so that they don't have to pay for something they aren't accountable for in the first place and protect the supplier/provider, which is the government, from incurring any losses from the theft as well as from customers who tamper with the meter values. It serves many purposes, from the monitoring of energy consumption to easily using mobile phones to work on managing the energy usage according to their budget. It is also easy for the supplier to monitor without manually inspecting the location. The WiFi module ESP8266 is used for the purpose of transmitting the energy data to the server. This paper also deals with a smart grid system in which energy meters are used as a two-way communication system as opposed to conventional meters with one-way communication, which will be a more efficient system. This IoT is good in terms of its development towards an easy and advanced metering infrastructure, which also needs secure communication between the supplier and consumer to protect that data. At present, a higher rate of power consumption is caused by intelligent grid applications. Due to high power consumption, the system efficiency, as well as the energy rate of the system, was high. So, to reduce the power consumption rate and increase the system's efficiency, a novel Ant Lion-based Auto Encoder System (ALbAES) was developed in this research. With this model, the power consumption reduced and the system's efficiency is increased, and the parameters of the proposed model were obtained in a better range. This work initially pre-processed the power demand data sets to remove the noisy data. The smart grid and the control and monitoring features were extracted through feature extraction. Those extracted features were used in further processes. Moreover, the fitness of the extracted features was compared with the ant lion fitness. The calculation was done based on the ant lion optimization and the Autoencoder. Ideally, the system's efficiency was increased as 96% based on the fitness function of developed optimization algorithm. To detect the performance of the proposed model, the parameters in the proposed model were compared with the other existing models. The system's efficiency was improved, the rate of power flow was reduced, and the energy rate of the model was reduced. AbstractThis work presents an improvement of the incremental conductance technique by adding PI controllers optimized by the recent equilibrium optimization algorithm. It addresses the main weaknesses of the incremental conductance algorithm consisting of the choice of step-size and the elimination of oscillations around the MPP. The proposed approach makes the MPPT control more dynamic and self-adaptive against the atmospheric conditions change. It has been applied for a photovoltaic generator, the thermoelectric generator and for the hybridization of the two generators. The simulation results, and the comparative study with the optimized step-size P&O and Incremental conductance methods, prove the efficiency and superiority of the proposed technique in terms of energy extraction and speed.
