Objectives: Few studies have examined the impact of healthy sleep among general workers on individuals and society. Therefore, the status and risk factors of sleep disturbances among general workers were investigated. In addition, this study assessed the degree to which cold and heat symptoms are associated with sleep disturbances.Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted through an online questionnaire focused on sleep disturbances of the general public in 2021. The degree of coldheat pattern Identification (CHPI) of the general public was also surveyed. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression were used to derive the study results.Results: Data from 2,822 workers out of 3,900 valid questionnaires were analyzed. Approximately half of the respondents (49.93%) had sleep disturbances. Among the types of work, self-employed, two-shift work, and working more than 53 hours were associated with sleep disturbances. Sleep disturbances were positively associated with six cold and heat symptoms: three cold symptoms (coldness of the abdomen, coldness of body, and pale face) and three heat symptoms (body feverishness, feverishness of the limbs, and drinking cold water).Conclusion: Customized policies to maintain healthy work are needed for self-employed work, two-shift work, and long working hours, which are risk factors for workers’ sleep disturbances. In addition, medical personnel can effectively diagnose and treat sleep disturbances considering the worker’s cold and heat symptoms.

However, working in shifts on a routine basis may disrupt the circadian pattern and alter the sleep-wakefulness cycle in nurses. Stress due to shift work can influence the adaptability of the cardiovascular system, produce psychophysiological strain and deteriorate work performance in female nurses. Objective: This study investigated the effect of morning and night shift work on sleep quality and circadian patterns governing heart rate variability (HRV) in female nurses working in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: Thirty-eight healthy female nurses were recruited. Frequency and time domain parameters of HRV were recorded as markers of cardiac autonomic function. A student t-test was used to investigate differences in HRV between morning and night shift workers. Mann-Whitney non-parametric test was applied for the difference between Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores in the two groups Results: Standard deviation of the normal-to-normal interval (SDNN) (msec), total power (ms2) and high-frequency (HF) band power (ms2) were significantly reduced in night shift nurses than in morning shift nurses. The low-frequency (LF)/HF ratio was significantly increased in night shift nurses. The differences in standard deviation of the averages of NN intervals (SDaNN) (msec), root mean square of successive differences between adjacent NN intervals (RMSSD), mean NN, very low-frequency (VLF) band power (ms2) and LF band power (ms2) were not statistically significant. The global PSQI score was significantly higher among night shift workers than in morning shifts. Conclusion: Inadequate sleep can disrupt the body’s ability to regulate heart rhythm and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and mortality. The research suggests a propensity for autonomic imbalance in night shift workers when compared to their counterparts on morning shifts.

Background: Resilience can mitigate the negative impact produced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical students endure significant academic stress, so adjusting to sudden changes can present greater mental health challenges. The aim is to identify the level and prevalence of resilience and to know what are the educational variables and is sleep quality associated with resilience. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire. The survey was elaborated in Google Forms and shared through social networks. The outcome was resilience, measured with the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale. Its association was assessed with sleep quality (measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), daytime sleepiness (measured with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale), and selected academic/sociodemographic variables. Generalized linear models were used to identify the association between the variables. Results: Of 1277 participants, 35.7% experienced high resilience. Poor sleep quality and sleepiness were present in 88.4% and 36.0% of students, respectively. High resilience was associated with good sleep quality (PR:1.56; 95%CI: 1.34 - 1.83; p-value<0.001), absent sleepiness (PR:1.59; 95%CI: 1.32--1.91; p-value<0.001), male sex (PR: 1.21; 95%CI: 1.05--1.39; p-value 0.006), working (PR:1.14), having family responsibilities (PR: 1.36; 95%CI: 1.09--1.70; p-value 0.005) and spending more than 6 hours studying (PR: 1.35; 95%CI: 1.17--1.54; p-value<0.001). Conclusion: 4 out of 10 students presented high levels of resilience. The development of resil ience depended on multiple individual and sociodemographic factors. Background Race/ethnicity and sleep disturbances are associated with dementia risk. Aims To explore racial–ethnic disparities in sleep disturbances, and whether race/ethnicity moderates the relationship between sleep disturbances and dementia risk among older adults. Method We analysed ten annual waves (2011–2020) of prospective cohort data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study, a nationally representative USA sample of 6284 non-Hispanic White (n = 4394), non-Hispanic Black (n = 1311), Hispanic (n = 342) and non-Hispanic Asian (n = 108) community-dwelling older adults. Sleep disturbances were converted into three longitudinal measures: (a) sleep-initiation difficulty (trouble falling asleep within 30 min), (b) sleep-maintenance difficulty (trouble falling asleep after waking up early) and (c) sleep medication usage (taking medication to sleep). Cox proportional hazards models analysed time to dementia, after applying sampling weights and adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and health. Results Black, Hispanic and Asian respondents exhibited higher frequencies of sleep-initiation and sleep-maintenance difficulties, but had less sleep medication usage, compared with White older adults. Among Hispanic respondents, sleep-initiation difficulty was associated with significantly decreased dementia risk (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 0.34, 95% CI 0.15–0.76), but sleep-maintenance difficulty was associated with increased dementia risk (aHR = 2.68, 95% CI 1.17–6.13), compared with White respondents. Asian respondents using sleep medications had a significantly higher dementia risk (aHR = 3.85, 95% CI 1.64–9.04). There were no significant interactions for Black respondents. Conclusions Sleep disturbances are more frequent among older Black, Hispanic and Asian adults, and should be considered when addressing dementia disparities. Research is needed to explore how certain sleep disturbances may elevate dementia risk across different racial and ethnic subgroups.

In addition, the expressive language domain of the BSID-III was found to be associated with the DA subscale of the SDSC questionnaire. It seems that excessive daytime sleepiness might negatively affect emotional and behavioral problems and cognitive function. Also, arousal disorders seem to be related to memory consolidation process, which is thought to affect language expression. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that DA and DOES subscales of the SDSC questionnaire were correlated with developmental aspects in preschool-aged children with DD. Sleep problems in children with DD can negatively affect their development, thereby interfering with the effectiveness of rehabilitation. Identifying and properly managing the modifiable factors of sleep problems is also crucial as a part of comprehensive rehabilitation treatment. Objective: To systematically understand the research frontiers, hotspots and development trends of exercise therapy in the intervention of tumor-related sleep-wake disorders, and to provide scientific basis for follow-up research. Methods: Downloaded the original research papers on February 26, 2024, from the Web of Science core collection database, on tumor-associated sleep-wake disorders. The data that met the inclusion criteria were imported into the Bibliometric Analysis Platform (http://biblimetric.com), CiteSpace 6.3.R1 and VOSviwer1.6.20 software for visual analysis, and imported into Excel2021. Scientometric analysis was performed with Oringin2021 and PyCharm Community Edition 2022.1.3. Results: A total of 512 original research papers on tumor-related sleep-wake disorders were obtained. The most influential countries in the subject area are the United States, Spain and German, the institutions are the University of California System, Sun Yat Sen University and Northwestern University, et al., the authors are Berger AM, Aaronson NK, Bower JE, et al., and the journals are Cancer, Brit J Cancer and Cancer Nurs. The co-cited references suggest that the current research frontier in the field mainly involves the level, place and program of exercise therapy, including the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behavior and cancer prevention and control. The results of cooccurrence keyword network analysis showed that quality of life, physical activity, breast cancer, exercise, fatigue, and survivors may be the research hotspots in this field, with breast cancer, health, aerobic exercise, adults, and chemotherapy being the most popular. Conclusions: The number of papers published and the research enthusiasm in this field show a steady upward trend. However, there is a lack of influential institutions and scholars, and there is relatively little research collaboration across countries/regions/institutions. The scientific research influence of institutions and scholars in most European and American countries/regions is significantly ahead of that of institutions and scholars in Asian and African countries/regions. But Sun Yat Sen University in China is a relatively active and influential scientific research institution in recent years, which is worthy of attention. In addition, the research frontier of this discipline is the level, place and program of exercise therapy auxiliary intervention, and the research hotspots involve breast cancer, health, aerobic exercise, adults, chemotherapy, et al. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD), sleep quality, and indicators of burnout syndrome in teachers. This cross-sectional study included 330 teachers with an average age of 43 years. The Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the questionnaire to assess burnout syndrome - teachers' version were used for data collection. Simple and multiple logistic regression models were applied to analyze the independent variables at a 5% significance level. Teachers with poor sleep quality, indicators of burnout syndrome, female sex, and impact on the domains of psychological exhaustion and guilt were, respectively, 1.91,1.92, 2.66, 1.97, and 2.60 times more likely to present at least one TMD symptom (p < 0.05). Background: This study aimed to identify distinct patterns within the symptom cluster of fatigue, pain, and sleep disturbance among ovarian cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, to determine the factors predicting these patterns and their impact on quality of life. Method s : The longitudinal study collected data from 151 ovarian cancer patients at three time points: before chemotherapy (T0), after the first chemotherapy cycle (T1), and following the completion of four cycles of chemotherapy (T2). Latent profile analysis and latent transition analysis were used to identify symptom patterns and evaluate changes in symptom patterns. A bias‐adjusted three‐step approach was utilized to examine predictor variables and distal outcomes associated with latent class membership. Results: Three symptom patterns emerged: "All Low," "Moderate" (T0)/"Low pain and high sleep disturbance" (T1 and T2), and "All High." Patients with lower educational attainment and higher levels of anxiety and depression were found to be at an elevated risk of belonging to the "All High" class. All quality‐of‐life domains showed significant differences among the three subgroups, following an "All Low" > "All High" pattern (p < 0.05). Membership in three classes remained relatively stable over time, with probabilities of 0.749 staying within their groups from T0 to T2. Conclusions: This study underscores the existence of a diverse and heterogeneous experience within the symptom cluster of fatigue, pain, and sleep disturbance among ovarian cancer patients. Importantly, these patterns were stable throughout chemotherapy. Abstract Apart from seizure freedom, the presence of comorbidities related to neurological, cardiovascular, or psychiatric disorders is the largest determinant of a reduced health‐related quality of life in people with epilepsy (PwE). However, comorbidities are often underrecognized and undertreated, and clinical management of comorbid conditions can be challenging. The focus of a comprehensive treatment regimen should maximize seizure control while optimizing clinical management of treatable comorbidities to improve a person's quality of life and overall health. A panel of four European epileptologists with expertise in their respective fields of epilepsy‐related comorbidities combined the latest available scientific evidence with clinical expertise and collaborated to provide consensus practical advice to improve the identification and management of comorbidities in PwE. This review provides a critical evaluation for the diagnosis and management of sleep–wake disorders, cardiovascular diseases, cognitive dysfunction, and depression in PwE. Whenever possible, clinical data have been provided. The PubMed database was the main search source for the literature review. The deleterious pathophysiological processes underlying neurological, cardiovascular, or psychiatric comorbidities in PwE interact with the processes responsible for generating seizures to increase cerebral and physiological dysfunction. This can increase the likelihood of developing drug‐resistant epilepsy; therefore, early identification of comorbidities and intervention is imperative. The practical evidence‐based advice presented in this article may help clinical neurologists and other specialist physicians responsible for the care and management of PwE.

Objective: To evaluate the presence of sleep disorders, obesity and anxiety associated with cavitated carious lesions in children aged 8 to 10 years. Materials and Methods: A cross‐sectional study was carried out in the Northeast of Brazil. The sample was comprised of 793 schoolchildren randomly selected from public and private schools. Calibrated examiners (Kappa >0.80) performed the clinical examination of dental caries using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System and applied the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale and the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children questionnaires. The anthropometric variables evaluated were weight and height. Negative binomial regressions (α ≤ 0.05) were performed. A Directed Acyclic Graph was prepared using DAGitty software (version 3.0), to select the co‐variables for the statistical fits. Results: The prevalence of tooth decay was 52.8%. The mean number of tooth surfaces with cavitated caries was 2.2(2.8), 58.9% of the schoolchildren had some type of sleep disorder, while 20.2% were anxious and 29.1% were obese. Sleep disturbance (RR = 1.38; 95% CI: 1.05–1.83), general anxiety (RR = 1.71; 95% CI: 1.32–2.21), obesity (RR = 1.48; 95% CI: 1.17–1.86) were associated with dental caries in the final model. Conclusion: The presence of carious lesions was higher in children with sleep disorders, anxiety, obesity, and those who experienced dry mouth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sleep is of vital necessity for health, and it has a restorative and protective function for children and adolescents with chronic conditions and their families. The purpose of this study was to identify the scientific production on sleep patterns in children and adolescents with chronic conditions and their families. This integrative review was conducted between March and June 2022 using the databases of MEDLINE, Web of Science, CINAHL and PsycINFO. The articles included were original papers published between January 2007 and mid-2022. Excluded were review studies that did not evaluate sleep and whose participants did not have chronic conditions or were not children, adolescents and/or their families. The searches returned 814 abstracts. After exclusions, 47 studies were selected to be read in full; of these, 29 were selected and were grouped empirically into four categories: major alterations in the sleep patterns of children and adolescents with chronic conditions; the relationship between sleep disorders and symptoms in children and adolescents with chronic conditions; the impaired sleep patterns of families of children and adolescents with chronic conditions; and sleep alterations and their relationship with other problems in families of children and adolescents with chronic conditions. The orexin/hypocretin neuropeptide family has emerged as a focal point of neuroscientific research following the discovery that this family plays a crucial role in a variety of physiological and behavioral processes. These neuropeptides serve as powerful neuromodulators, intricately shaping autonomic, endocrine, and behavioral responses across species. Notably, they serve as master regulators of vigilance and stress responses; however, their roles in food intake, metabolism, and thermoregulation appear complementary and warrant further investigation. This narrative review provides a journey through the evolution of our understanding of the orexin system, from its initial discovery to the promising progress made in developing orexin derivatives. It goes beyond conventional boundaries, striving to synthesize the multifaceted activities of orexins. Special emphasis is placed on domains such as stress response, fear, anxiety, and learning, in which the authors have contributed to the literature with original publications. This paper also overviews the advancement of orexin pharmacology, which has already yielded some promising successes, particularly in the treatment of sleep disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and purpose: The diagnosis of sleep–wake disorders (SWDs) is challenging because of the existence of only few accurate biomarkers and the frequent coexistence of multiple SWDs and/or other comorbidities. The aim of this study was to assess in a large cohort of well‐characterized SWD patients the potential of a data‐driven approach for the identification of SWDs. Methods: We included 6958 patients from the Bernese Sleep Registry and 300 variables/biomarkers including questionnaires, results of polysomnography/vigilance tests, and final clinical diagnoses. A pipeline, based on machine learning, was created to extract and cluster the clinical data. Our analysis was performed on three cohorts: patients with central disorders of hypersomnolence (CDHs), a full cohort of patients with SWDs, and a clean cohort without coexisting SWDs. Results: A first analysis focused on the cohort of patients with CDHs and revealed four patient clusters: two clusters for narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) but not for narcolepsy type 2 or idiopathic hypersomnia. In the full cohort of SWDs, nine clusters were found: four contained patients with obstructive and central sleep apnea syndrome, one with NT1, and four with intermixed SWDs. In the cohort of patients without coexisting SWDs, an additional cluster of patients with chronic insomnia disorder was identified. Conclusions: This study confirms the existence of clear clusters of NT1 in CDHs, but mainly intermixed groups in the full spectrum of SWDs, with the exception of sleep apnea syndromes and NT1. Background: The gold standard for diagnosing sleep bruxism (SB) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is polysomnography (PSG). However, a final hypermotor muscle activity often occurs after apnea episodes, which can confuse the diagnosis of SB when using portable electromyography (EMG) devices. This study aimed to compare the number of SB episodes obtained from PSG with manual analysis by a sleep expert, and from a manual and automatic analysis of an EMG and electrocardiography (EKG) device, in a population with suspected OSA. Methods: Twenty-two subjects underwent a polysomnographic study with simultaneous recording with the EMG-EKG device. SB episodes and SB index measured with both tools and analyzed manually and automatically were compared. Masticatory muscle activity was scored according to published criteria. Patients were segmented by severity of OSA (mild, moderate, severe) following the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) criteria. ANOVA and the Bland–Altman plot were used to quantify the agreement between both methods. The concordance was calculated through the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: On average, the total events of SB per night in the PSG study were (8.41 ± 0.85), lower than the one obtained with EMG-EKG manual (14.64 ± 0.76) and automatic (22.68 ± 16.02) analysis. The mean number of SB episodes decreases from the non-OSA group to the OSA group with both PSG (5.93 ± 8.64) and EMG-EKG analyses (automatic = 22.47 ± 18.07, manual = 13.93 ± 11.08). However, this decrease was minor in proportion compared to the automatic EMG-EKG analysis mode (from 23.14 to 22.47). The ICC based on the number of SB episodes in the segmented sample by severity degree of OSA along the three tools shows a moderate correlation in the non-OSA (0.61) and mild OSA (0.53) groups. However, it is poorly correlated in the moderate (0.24) and severe (0.23) OSA groups: the EMG-EKG automatic analysis measures 14.27 units more than PSG. The results of the manual EMG-EKG analysis improved this correlation but are not good enough. Conclusions: The results obtained in the PSG manual analysis and those obtained by the EMG-EKG device with automatic and manual analysis for the diagnosis of SB are acceptable but only in patients without OSA or with mild OSA. In patients with moderate or severe OSA, SB diagnosis with portable electromyography devices can be confused due to apneas, and further study is needed to investigate this.

Genotype-phenotype association studies often combine phenotype data from multiple studies to increase statistical power. Harmonization of the data usually requires substantial effort due to heterogeneity in phenotype definitions, study design, data collection procedures, and data-set organization. Here we describe a centralized system for phenotype harmonization that includes input from phenotype domain and study experts, quality control, documentation, reproducible results, and data-sharing mechanisms. This system was developed for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program, which is generating genomic and other -omics data for more than 80 studies with extensive phenotype data. To date, 63 phenotypes have been harmonized across thousands of participants (recruited in 1948-2012) from up to 17 studies per phenotype. Here we discuss challenges in this undertaking and how they were addressed. The harmonized phenotype data and associated documentation have been submitted to National Institutes of Health data repositories for controlled access by the scientific community. We also provide materials to facilitate future harmonization efforts by the community, which include 1) the software code used to generate the 63 harmonized phenotypes, enabling others to reproduce, modify, or extend these harmonizations to additional studies, and 2) the results of labeling thousands of phenotype variables with controlled vocabulary terms.

Background: Frailty is associated with an increased susceptibility to functional decline, impairment, hospitalization, and mortality among the older adults. However, the potential reversibility of frailty lies in identifying modifiable factors that could prevent, mitigate, or interrupt its progression. While there is a suggestion that sleep disorders may increase the risk of frailty and impairment, the risk stratification of this relationship remains inconclusive. Objective: Stratify the risk of frailty and impairment and investigate potential connections with sleep quality, excessive daytime sleepiness, and the risk of obstructive sleep apnea in older adults dwelling in the community. Methods: This was a quantitative cross-sectional investigation. Frailty risk and impairment were stratified using the Frail Non-disabled Questionnaire (for impairment) and the FRAIL Scale (for Frailty). The assessment of excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, and the risk of obstructive sleep apnea involved the employment of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the STOP-BANG questionnaire, respectively. Background: The gold standard for diagnosing sleep bruxism (SB) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is polysomnography (PSG). However, a final hypermotor muscle activity often occurs after apnea episodes, which can confuse the diagnosis of SB when using portable electromyography (EMG) devices. This study aimed to compare the number of SB episodes obtained from PSG with manual analysis by a sleep expert, and from a manual and automatic analysis of an EMG and electrocardiography (EKG) device, in a population with suspected OSA. Methods: Twenty-two subjects underwent a polysomnographic study with simultaneous recording with the EMG-EKG device. SB episodes and SB index measured with both tools and analyzed manually and automatically were compared. Masticatory muscle activity was scored according to published criteria. Patients were segmented by severity of OSA (mild, moderate, severe) following the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) criteria. ANOVA and the Bland–Altman plot were used to quantify the agreement between both methods. The concordance was calculated through the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Biological, environmental, behavioral, and social factors can influence sleep and lead to sleep disorders or diseases. Sleep disorders are common, numerous, and heterogeneous in terms of their etiology, pathogenesis, and symptomatology. The management of sleep–wake circadian disorders (SWCDs) includes education on sleep hygiene, behavioral strategies, psychotherapy (cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly), instrument-based treatments (i.e., positive airway pressure therapy, hypoglossal nerve stimulation), and pharmacotherapy. Depending on the disease, therapy varies and is executed sequentially or can be a combination of several forms of therapy. Drugs used for SWCDs include traditional sleep- or wake-promoting agents and chronotherapeutic agents. Recently, novel medications, which more precisely act on specific neurochemical systems (i.e., the orexin system) important for sleep and waking, are also increasingly being used. In this review, the pharmacotherapy of common sleep disorders (insomnia, sleep-related breathing disorder, central disorders of hypersomnolence, circadian rhythm sleep–wake disorders, parasomnias, and sleep-related movement disorders) embedded in the overall therapeutic concept of each disorder is presented. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by atypical patterns of social interaction and communication, as well as restrictive and repetitive behaviors. In addition, patients with ASD often presents with sleep disturbances. Delta (δ) catenin protein 2 (CTNND2) encodes δ‐catenin protein, a neuron‐specific catenin implicated in many complex neuropsychiatric diseases. Our previous study demonstrated that the deletion of Ctnnd2 in mice led to autism‐like behaviors. However, to our knowledge, no study has investigated the effects of Ctnnd2 deletion on sleep in mice. In this study, we investigated whether the knockout (KO) of exon 2 of the Ctnnd2 gene could induce sleep–wake disorders in mice and identified the effects of oral melatonin (MT) supplementation on Ctnnd2 KO mice. Our results demonstrated that the Ctnnd2 KO mice exhibited ASD‐like behaviors and sleep–wake disorders that were partially attenuated by MT supplementation. Overall, our current study is the first to identify that knockdown of Ctnnd2 gene could induce sleep–wake disorders in mice and suggests that treatment of sleep–wake disturbances by MT may benefit to autism‐like behaviors causing by Ctnnd2 gene deletion. Background Stroke is one of the main causes of mortality worldwide. Nonetheless, there are still risk factors that have not been fully elucidated, such as chronic insomnia disorder. Objective To evaluate the association between chronic insomnia disorder and the risk of stroke in adults, through a systematic review. Methods Multiple studies available in the Embase, Lilacs, and Medline platforms were evaluated in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. The selection of papers was restricted to those that had investigated the association between chronic insomnia disorder and stroke in adults, regardless of gender or nationality, without a previous history of stroke. The data was extracted with the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organization of Care (EPOC) form. The risk of bias was evaluated by the EPOC Risk of bias tool. Results A total of 138 articles were identified. After a detailed evaluation with the eligibility criteria, four articles were included in the present systematic review. Three of them recognized the association between chronic insomnia disorder and stroke. The comparative analysis was limited, since the studies used distinct insomnia classifications. Regarding the risk of bias, the analysis displayed an important risk in the selection and allocation of participants, besides the use of own insomnia diagnosis criteria, disrespecting chronology and factors indicated by already established classifications. Conclusions There is not enough data to determine that chronic insomnia disorder is a risk factor for stroke. The present study points out the existence of a possible relationship between insomnia disorder and stroke, suggesting that further studies adopt standardized criteria and instruments.

Abstract Background In-depth investigation of the factors that exacerbate sleep disturbance among night-shift workers is essential to develop a successful implementation strategy to improve sleep. Although some characteristics of work associated with sleep disturbances have been investigated, there are inconsistencies in the findings. This study aimed to assess the influence of working time and work characteristics on sleep disturbance among night-shift workers. Methods This study was a secondary data analysis of a nationally representative sample of data from the fifth Korean Working Condition Survey in 2017. A total of 1,790 wage workers aged between 19 and 64 years with night shift schedules were selected and analyzed. A multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze the influences of working time characteristics, including shift type, frequency of night shift, and extended work; as well as work characteristics, including physical work demands, workload, emotional work demands, social support, and communication, on sleep disturbance among night-shift workers. Results Of those analyzed, 8.4% of night-shift workers experienced sleep disturbances. Night-shift workers with extended work, higher workloads, and emotional work demands were more likely to experience sleep disturbances (OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.05 to 2.23; OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.01 to 1.03; OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.02 to 1.05; respectively). Conclusion Extended work, higher workload, and emotional work demands were significant factors for sleep disturbance among night-shift workers. These findings highlight the importance of adjusting work demands and mitigating extended work to reduce sleep disturbance in night-shift workers.

Game addiction scores of boys (58.66±16.68) and primary school children (60.37±16.41) were higher than game addiction of girls (52.91±17.57), and of secondary school children (55.06±17.39) (p=0.023, p=0.040, respectively). Computer game addiction score (61.89±14.77) of children with sleep disturbance risk was significantly higher (p<0.001) than children without sleep disturbance risk (38.79±11.84). Among the children with a risk of sleep disturbance, the proportion of time spent on the computer compared to the pre-pandemic period (70.1%), the proportion of going late to bed-time (70.0%), and the proportion of being own computer or tablet (71.7%) were found to be higher than the proportions in children (48.3%, 58.4%, 37.1%, respectively) without sleep disturbance (p<0.001, p=0.004, p<0.001, respectively). The level of computer game addiction was significantly increased in children who spent less time with their mothers (58.68±16.97) and less time for games (58.05±18.11) compared to other children (p=0.002). In the logistic regression analysis, it was shown that the game addiction score was 1.128 times higher in children with sleep disturbance risk [Odds ratio=1.128 (1.094-1.162; p<0.001)]. Conclusion: Our study showed that three of four children had a risk of sleep disorders during the pandemic period and were associated with an increased level of computer game addiction and drew attention to the importance of the time spent with the mother. The knowledge of the distribution of sleep and wake over a 24-h day is essential for a comprehensive image of sleep-wake rhythms. Current sleep-wake scoring algorithms for wrist-worn actigraphy suffer from low specificities, which leads to an underestimation of the time staying awake. The goal of this study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03356938) was to develop a sleep-wake classifier with increased specificity. By artificially balancing the training dataset to contain as much wake as sleep epochs from day- and nighttime measurements from 12 subjects, we optimized the classification parameters to an optimal trade-off between sensitivity and specificity. The resulting sleep-wake classifier achieved high specificity of 80.4% and sensitivity of 88.6% on the balanced dataset containing 3079.9 h of actimeter data. In the validation on night sleep of separate adaptation recordings from 19 healthy subjects, the sleep-wake classifier achieved 89.4% sensitivity and 64.6% specificity and estimated accurately total sleep time and sleep efficiency with a mean difference of 12.16 min and 2.83%, respectively. This new, device-independent method allows to rid sleep-wake classifiers from their bias towards sleep detection and lay a foundation for more accurate assessments in everyday life, which could be applied to monitor patients with fragmented sleep-wake rhythms. Background The effect of long working hours on mental health has drawn great social attention in recent years. Aims We investigated how work–family conflict mediates the associations between long working hours and sleep disturbance and burnout. Method We included 19 159 individuals from a nationally representative sample of workers in South Korea. We decomposed the total effect into a direct effect (long working hours → sleep disturbance or burnout) and an indirect effect (long working hours → work–family conflict → sleep disturbance or burnout). Logistic mediation models were used. Results Long working hours were associated with increased risks of work–family conflict, sleep disturbance and burnout. The longer the working hours, the stronger the direct and indirect effects. The odds ratios of the direct effects of long working hours on sleep disturbance were 1.64 (95% CI 1.39–1.95) for 49–54 h/week and 1.66 (95% CI 1.37–2.01) for ≥55 h/week; those of the indirect effects were 1.16 (95% CI 1.12–1.21) for 49–54 h/week and 1.27 (95% CI 1.21–1.33) for ≥ 55 h/week. Similarly, odds ratios of the direct effects of long working hours on burnout were 1.18 (95% CI 1.05–1.33) for 49–54 h/week and 1.20 (95% CI 1.04–1.37) for ≥55 h/week; those of the indirect effects were 1.11 (95% CI 1.09–1.15) for 49–54 h/week and 1.20 (95% CI 1.16–1.24) for ≥55 h/week. Conclusions Our results suggest that work–family conflict mediates the associations between long working hours and sleep disturbance and burnout. Longitudinal studies should be followed to confirm the causal relationship.

Sleep is of vital necessity for health, and it has a restorative and protective function for children and adolescents with chronic conditions and their families. The purpose of this study was to identify the scientific production on sleep patterns in children and adolescents with chronic conditions and their families. This integrative review was conducted between March and June 2022 using the databases of MEDLINE, Web of Science, CINAHL and PsycINFO. The articles included were original papers published between January 2007 and mid-2022. Excluded were review studies that did not evaluate sleep and whose participants did not have chronic conditions or were not children, adolescents and/or their families. The searches returned 814 abstracts. After exclusions, 47 studies were selected to be read in full; of these, 29 were selected and were grouped empirically into four categories: major alterations in the sleep patterns of children and adolescents with chronic conditions; the relationship between sleep disorders and symptoms in children and adolescents with chronic conditions; the impaired sleep patterns of families of children and adolescents with chronic conditions; and sleep alterations and their relationship with other problems in families of children and adolescents with chronic conditions. All studies showed sleep pattern impairment in children and adolescents with chronic conditions as well as their families.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence and investigate factors associated with sleep problems in adults enrolled in the Family Health Strategy in 2016. Methods: Cross-sectional sample study with 791 individuals aged 18 years or over, conducted between 2017 and 2018. Sleep problems were measured using the Mini Sleep Questionnaire, a questionnaire validated in Brazil. Results: The prevalence of sleep problems was 49.6%. Of these, 10.4% had mild, 7.6% moderate, and 31.6% severe alterations. There was a statistically significant association between not having a paid work activity, not having leisure activities, smoking, chronic disease, and negative self-assessment of health with sleep problems. Conclusion: There was a high prevalence of sleep problems. These results can contribute to a better understanding of sleep problems in the adult population and thus collaborate with adopting more effective measures to treat them.

BackgroundSleep disturbance is a common issue among rotating night shift workers and is closely related to health risks. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological sleep interventions for the management of sleep disturbance among rotating night shift workers.MethodsFor this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched six electronic databases—EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science—for randomized controlled trials and clinical trials published from January 1990 to June 2022. The quality of eligible studies was independently assessed by three authors using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies. The meta-analysis was performed based on the random effects model using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. The study was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.ResultsOf the 1019 studies retrieved, 30 met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review; 25 were selected for the meta-analysis. Sleep interventions were categorized as follows: pharmacological approach (n = 7), light therapy (n = 9), cognitive behavioral approach (n = 7), aroma or alternative therapy (n = 4), and shift schedule modification (n = 3). The overall mean effect size of the interventions was moderate (Hedges' g = 0.59; 95% confidence interval = 0.33–0.84, z = 4.50, p < 0.001).ConclusionSleep interventions were effective in promoting sleep or reducing sleep disturbance among rotating night shift workers. These findings provide evidence of the effectiveness of various pharmacological and non-pharmacological sleep interventions for managing sleep health in the work environment of rotating night shift workers.

Purpose: To assess the prevalence and related factors of a newly developed insomnia disorder following craniotomy for brain tumor resection. Furthermore, we examined the association of pre- and postoperative insomnia with the 2-year mortality rate. Methods: The South Korean national registration cohort database was used as the data source. This study includes all adult patients who underwent craniotomy for brain tumor resection from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2017. G47.0 and F51.0 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision codes) were used to identify insomnia disorders. Results: In total, 4,851 patients were included. Among them, 913 (18.8%) and 447 (9.2%) patients were assigned to the preoperative and postoperative insomnia groups, respectively. After modeling using multivariable logistic regression, older age (odds ratio (OR) 1.02, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01–1.03; P < 0.001), reoperation within 1 year (OR 2.12, 95% CI 1.47–3.06; P < 0.001), and newly acquired brain disability (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.01–1.71; P = 0.043) were associated with an increased prevalence of newly developed postoperative insomnia disorder. After modeling using multivariable Cox regression, the preoperative and postoperative insomnia disorder groups showed a 1.17-fold (hazard ratio (HR) 1.17, 95% CI 1.02–1.34; P = 0.021) and a 1.85-fold (HR 1.85, 95% CI 1.59–2.15, P < 0.001) increased 2-year all-cause mortality risk compared to the control group, respectively. Conclusion: In South Korea, 9.2% of the patients with brain tumors were newly diagnosed with an insomnia disorder following craniotomy for brain tumor resection, which was associated with an increased risk of 2-year mortality. Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder predominately affecting midbrain dopaminergic neurons that results in a broad range of motor and non‐motor symptoms. Sleep complaints are among the most common non‐motor symptoms, even in the prodromal period. Sleep alterations in Parkinson's disease patients may be associated with dysregulation of circadian rhythms, intrinsic 24‐h cycles that control essential physiological functions, or with side effects from levodopa medication and physical and mental health challenges. The impact of circadian dysregulation on sleep disturbances in Parkinson's disease is not fully understood; as such, we review the systems, cellular and molecular mechanisms that may underlie circadian perturbations in Parkinson's disease. We also discuss the potential benefits of chronobiology‐based personalized medicine in the management of Parkinson's disease both in terms of behavioural and pharmacological interventions. We propose that a fuller understanding of circadian clock function may shed important new light on the aetiology and symptomatology of the disease and may allow for improvements in the quality of life for the millions of people with Parkinson's disease. Objectives: To review the relevant literature to assess whether patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) are more prone to have sleep disturbances than general population. Methods: The literature search for relevant articles was from July 2020 to March 2021. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, Cochrane library, Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source, and Scopus was conducted to search for relevant studies. The quality of studies was assessed in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute's guidelines and using the software SUMARI—The System for the Unified Management, Assessment and Review of Information. Confidence in the findings was assessed using the GRADE‐CERQual approach. Results: A total of 1064 studies were initially identified from the search; six studies, two cross‐sectional and four case–control, met the inclusion criteria and were selected for this systematic review. Sleep disturbances were a required outcome measured in selected studies evaluating symptoms of BMS. For studies that were included in the final analyses, BMS was found to relate to several dimensions of sleep including sleep disturbance and duration (n = 6), sleep affecting daytime function (n = 4), sleep quality (n = 6), sleep efficiency (n = 4), and ability to fall asleep (n = 4). Consistent evidence of moderate confidence found that BMS was associated with greater sleep disturbance, reduced sleep quality, increased time taken to fall asleep, reduced sleep efficiency, and poor daytime function, whereas evidence of low confidence was found regarding the association of BMS with reduced sleep duration. Conclusions: Although the presented studies could not establish a direct causal relationship between BMS and sleep disturbances, it supports the evidence that sleep disturbance is associated with symptoms of BMS. Tayside Children's Sleep Questionnaire (TCSQ) is a simple tool for screening the disorders of initiating and Maintaining Sleep among children aged between 1 and 5 years. This study aimed to translate TCSQ into Persian and evaluate its validity and reliability of TCSQ among Persian speakers. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 311 children aged 1–5 years in Isfahan. After permission, the forward–backward translation method was used to develop the Persian version. Finally, 311 children participated in this survey, which 30 were repeated a second time. Google Forms, SPSS16, and STATA14 were used for data collection, descriptive statistics, and factor analysis. BEARS questionnaire was used to assess concurrent validity. Three expert opinions were used for content validity. In this study, 404 mothers of children in Isfahan volunteered to participate in the survey, of which 311 remained. The mean and standard deviation age of their children were 3.47 ± 1.91 years. Cronbach Alpha of the Persian version of TCSQ was 0.76 CI (0.78–0.66). The intra-class correlation coefficient was 0.67 CI (0.60–0.74). The content validity index was 0.88, and three factors (disturbance, nighttime, parents) with a specific value greater than 0.4 is determined by factor analysis. Objective: The current study describes the prevalence of sleep disorders in enuretic children, playing as influencing factors in the response to treatment and risk of relapse. Materials and methods: Data were collected from September 2020 to February 2021 in 114 children aged between 5 and 14 years, with a diagnosis of nocturnal enuresis and concomitant sleep disorders, referred to the Pediatric Unit, Campus Bio-Medico University, Rome. Enuretic children were subjected to an anamnestic and clinical assessment. Sleep disorders investigated were sleep apnea, sleep talking, snoring, bruxism, restless sleep, and somnambulism. Each patient was subjected both to pharmacological and to non-pharmacological treatments and monitored for 3 months to identify the presence of relapse. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to therapy response, and statistical analysis was performed to evaluate possible variables involved in enuresis relapse. Results: A high prevalence of sleep disorders was documented: 8/114 children (7%) had sleep apnea, 47/114 (41.2%) had bruxism, 66/114 (57.8%) had snoring, 54/114 (47.3%) had sleep talking, 18/114 (15.7%) had restless sleep. Forty-three of 114 children (37.7%) had relapses: 21/43 (49%) relapses occurred in children with only 1 sleep disorder, while 22/43 (51%) relapses occurred in children with 2 or more sleep disorders. Lower risk of relapses was reported in children subjected to dual therapy. Conclusion: Sleep disorders were widely associated with nocturnal enuresis, acting as comorbidities in the clinical course of nocturnal enuresis. Combined therapy seems to be associated with a lower rate of relapse of enuresis in a 3-month follow-up. A multi-disciplinary approach is required to improve patients' management.
