A recent exhibition in Santiago de Compostela has collected the career of the silversmith Julio Lado Martínez, last witness of a centuries-old saga of Compostela silversmiths. The aim of this article is to publicise our research on this family by focusing on those members who preceded Julio, in which, through the consult of the archives of the city, we have been able to collect an enormous number of documents, especially historical press reports, which tell us about important missing works, for example, several offered to important politicians or even to the kings of Spain. A social etiquette has emerged around the consumption of food in the West which requires the use of cutlery – knife, fork and spoon. It is the spoon that is the subject of this thesis, a utensil so familiar as to have become almost invisible. The significance of the spoon should not be underestimated and it is employed in this study as a device to offer insight into material practices, examine theoretical issues in relation to design and explore the culture of representation that has developed around objects in the contemporary field of visual and material culture. In this sense this thesis can be seen as located in the blurred boundaries of art, craft and design and as constituting a text which contextualises and supports a collection of artefacts developed in the course of a 'practice led' Art and Design PhD. The spoon exists not only as an object whose usefulness transcends time but also in terms of a metaphorical singularity; as an idea with an infinite number of possible interpretations and material manifestations. This thesis originates in the idea of a reflective cross-disciplinary enquiry intended to explore fundamental questions around what the author defines as “spoonness”, articulating that which might otherwise be articulated through (and subsumed in) the making of the object itself. Significantly, by tracing the journey of the authors film „Emilie Eating Soup‟ together with the various objects, exhibitions and catalogues developed in the course of this research, this thesis also contributes to current critical discourse from the perspective of the practitioner - a voice that in the past has often been absent from academic discourse. It opens up the creative processes to scrutiny and further comment, and serves as a model of analysis to others in the field of material culture to aid reflection upon their own practice and generate new modes of innovation. A critical reflection upon the works subsequent reception at a series of prestigious international exhibitions and events is made throughout this thesis. These materials, together with this text, combine to represent the broad arc of this author‟s creative practice and collectively define the innovative nature of this PhD.

[EN] Only a few studies on the guild of silversmiths of Compostela have been published, despite this art being one of the most important in the Jacobean city throughout its history. Our work in the University Historical Archive has allowed us to find a series of documents relating to the designation of markers in the nineteenth century, making known the names of those who ensured compliance with the quality standards of the material. Moreover, thanks to the fieldwork in museums, cathedrals, convents and parishes, and the examination of the Inventory of Furniture of the Church and the catalogues of exhibitions which took place in Galician territory throughout history, we have been able to certify the marks of these contrasts, and this allows us to date a big number of pieces.

- Abstract
This article reconstructs the trajectory of the members of the saga of silversmiths of Compostela, named Otero, born in the nineteenth century and prolonged until today, demonstrating the great importance they had in the city. Thanks to our work with the historical press, we have found dozens of news that have allowed us to locate and attribute unpublished pieces, while the work in the municipal archive has allowed us to reconstruct the family tree and location of the workshops mentioned in the industrial registry, data contrasted with interviews with their successors. This work aims to contribute to the contextual knowledge of such an important discipline in the artistic configuration of Compostela, but paradoxically forgotten by historiography.

- Abstract
Various cultural objects, crafts and traditional production techniques from Turkey have been research subjects in the field of design studies in recent years. During this time, definitions of tradition, culture and craft have changed and, therefore, these changes need to be revisited, in particular relating to product design. This study explores these changes through a field study conducted in Istanbul, Turkey, one of the key areas of craft production. Focusing on silversmithing, a traditional craft in Turkey, the study seeks to identify new ways in which craft can be used in and lead to the design of new products. The field study was conducted with students from the Industrial Design Department of İstanbul Bilgi University during their second-year studio course. For the study, they were paired with craftsmen in the Kapalıçarşı (the Grand Bazaar) area, one of the most well-known and historic craft neighbourhoods in İstanbul. The aim was to investigate the relationship between traditional craft methods, craft knowledge and contemporary product design, specifically to find out how traditional craft knowledge and methods can be used to inform contemporary product design, and in return, how the craftspeople might benefit from this exchange. - Abstract
The current study reveals two nearly unpublished Gothic crosses that were thought to date from the Late Middle Ages. As a result of the comparative study and the interpretation of the text recorded in one of the crosses, the author is identified as the silversmith Augerius. Fray Martín de Maluenda, abbot of the Piedra monastery intermittently from 1284 to 1313, is proposed as the manager of these manufactures. The crosses are covered with filigree threads and they were originally aniconic cross-es following the Hispanic tradition. Theses crosses are almost unknown despite their virtuous elaboration and their trascendental importance for the study of Spanish and European silverware, Se presentan dos cruces góticas casi inéditas que se habían considerado del final de la Edad Media.

- Abstract
This paper explores five elements that we chose as representative items in the artistic scene of Santiago de Compostela between the nineteenth and the twentieth century, when the favourable historical and economical context motivated certain changes that distinguish this art from the past nineteenth century art. Revisiting the second inventio of the Apostle, the institutionalization of the education of the guilds, the neo-medieval historicism style, and the construction of nationalist identity, we pretend to explore the relationship between these factors and the industrial arts –our subject of study– and in which way these arts are a clear reflection of their artistic and aesthetic context., Este artículo explora cinco elementos que hemos escogido como representativos del panorama artístico de Santiago de Compostela entre finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, cuando el contexto histórico y económico favorable motivó ciertos cambios que distinguen el arte de este momento de la dinámica decimonónica anterior. Supporting the thesis that museums are primarily educational institutions turned towards visitor learning and towards their needs, this paper analyzes the use of documentary film in museum educational activities. Based on theoretical claims which emphasize the aesthetic and informative values of the documentary film, its potential for cultivating human values such as empathy, tolerance, sensibility, as well as the development of multiple intelligences, collaborative learning, etc., the paper focuses on the concrete example of the production and use of the documentary series "On the Pathways of Prizren Silversmiths" in the educative programs of the future Museum of filigree in Prizren. This is a documentary which from the perspective of the intangible cultural heritage holders (filigreemakers), shows how cultural, economic, and political factors influenced silversmithing (filigree making) in Prizren during the last 100 years.

In 2004, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reclassified formaldehyde (FA) from a probable (Group 2A) to a known human carcinogen (Group 1) citing results for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) mortality from the follow-up through 1994 of the National Cancer Institute formaldehyde cohort study. To the contrary, in 2012, the Committee for Risk Assessment of the European Chemicals Agency disagreed with the proposal to classify FA as a known human carcinogen (Carc. 1A), proposing a lower but still protective category, namely as a substance which is presumed to have carcinogenic potential for humans (Carc. 1B). Thus, U.S. and European regulatory agencies currently disagree about the potential human carcinogenicity of FA. In 2013, the National Cancer Institute reported results from their follow-up through 2004 of the formaldehyde cohort and concluded that the results continue to suggest a link between FA exposure and NPC. We discuss in this commentary why we believe that this interpretation is neither consistent with the available data from the most recent update of the National Cancer Institute cohort study nor with other research findings from that cohort, other large cohort studies and the series of publications by some of the current authors, including an independent study of one of the National Cancer Institute's study plants. Another serious concern relates to the incorrectness of the data from the follow-up through 1994 of the National Cancer Institute study stemming from incomplete mortality ascertainment. While these data were corrected by the National Cancer Institute in subsequent supplemental publications, incorrect data from the original publications have been cited extensively in recent causal evaluations of FA, including IARC. We conclude that the NCI publications that contain incorrect data from the incomplete 1994 mortality follow-up should be retracted entirely or corrected via published errata in the corresponding journals, and efforts should be made to re-analyze data from the 2004 follow-up of the NCI cohort study. The present paper aims to present the importance of the Late Gothic style in the construction of silver pieces in Compostela in the last decades of the nineteenth century. In order to accomplish that, we will revisit the foundation of the aesthetic taste based on the Gothic Revival, and the importance that this movement had in Galicia. We will present the main authors, pioneers of the historiography of the Galician art, and the foreign writers that, throughout their travel literature, demonstrated that the aesthetic spirit of the epoch longed the medieval past. Then, we will show a series of unpublished works of the best silversmith in Compostela in this context, Ricardo Martínez Costoya, character who embodies with his work the taste for the Gothic in silversmithing pieces, which were ordered by the most important clients of that epoch in Compostela. In those pieces, he used the Gothic building elements to create authentic silver architectures.

- Abstract
An emergency is a speeded-up emergence, a state of change that accelerates beyond the control of the system in which it takes place and results in either death or necessary development, for an establishment of a new rhythm. This work is an investigation on the limits and possibilities of contemporary corpus practices. My aim for it is to be reflective of my own ambivalence towards the field in which my silversmithing practice is situated, and to promote the urgency of collaborative craft, in traditional as well as contemporary contexts. This investigation has resulted in the collaborative corpus project Poetic Justice, together with Klara Brydewall Sandquist, promoting two separate feminist agendas, in order to elevate them both and underline their entanglement. One being to manifest and justify women’s anger, and the other to oppose the cult of the individual genius and suggest alternate possibilities in relation to historical corpus in the contemporary field of craft. It is also a way for us to highlight the urgency of supporting, elevating and celebrating each other’s practices and purposes, through a closely intertwined way of working that investigates where objects begin and end, in space as well as in time.

- Abstract
Almost forty years have passed since the publication of the first data regard-ing the Barcelonian silversmith José Saderra Blancafort, which mentioned three works whose whereabouts are still unknown. Twenty years were needed to see three further pieces quoted. In 2018 six new objects were named, but a biographical and profes-sional profile was still pending. In this paper we do fulfill this task by providing, for the first time, his second family name Blancafort, the two variants of his personal mark and numerous new biographical data, as well as by compiling his catalogue of works, to which we incorporate eight more pieces., Hace casi cuarenta años que se publicaron las primeras noticias del platero barcelonés José Saderra Blancafort, que consistían en citar tres obras en paradero desconocido.

This research examines the creation of the animal symbol in metal. The investigation generates important insights in relation to human creativity, zoomorphic representation, material agency, and bio-inspiration, while activating vital links between the symbolic and the utilitarian. Two key questions motivate the research trajectory: What is the role and meaning of the animal symbol in creative objects? And, in which ways can a study of the connection between animal symbology, metal, material engagement, and the mythopoeic lead to new possibilities within contemporary art? To answer these questions, the project is approached through my perspective as a silversmith. It grows out of practice-led research into the characteristics and working properties of metallic elements, most particularly gold, silver, copper, and iron, and the use of these materials in the portrayal of the animal symbol. The artistic endeavour in the studio seeks to better fathom and advance conceptual vitality and vibrancy within this specific type of creative material production. Simultaneously immutable and transmutable, animal symbology in metal is shown to be a totemic visual and material language that animates ideas through allusion to biological dynamism in combination with qualities of metallic longevity and an elemental, embryonic potential for endless change. These associations speak to ideas of embodiment, divine animism, and enduring spirit, and further can be seen to exemplify the forces impelling the tumult of cultural activity and exchange embedded in material culture. Encompassing an epic sweep of history and drawing on archaeology, anthropology, and a particular Nordic worldview within the Western tradition of material culture, Talisman, Tool and Touchstone examines the past in order to look to the future. In this exploration the creative and conceptual research findings are advanced and made tangible through the specificity of artefacts discussed, subjects examined and objects made.

This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of the official silversmiths of the Cathedral of Santiago in the first half of the nineteenth century, who were unknown until now. Our methodology focused on the analysis of the fonts in the Archive of the Cathedral of Santiago and the Historical Archive of the University, contrasted with the relevant bibliography, to rescue the name of the four silversmiths that created new pieces and preserved the silver of the Cathedral in this century. According to this, we were able to compare the information with the one in the second half, much larger and more interesting, certifying the great difference between the first and second part of the century. In the years we have researched, we can prove that the work of the official silversmith of the Cathedral was unstable and they barely created new pieces, a reality in contrast with the great importance that was achieved by the silversmiths on the last decades. ‘Redefining Luxury’ – Social and Cultural Innovation through Craft- re-generating the silversmithing industry. For centuries, people worldwide have satisfied themselves with the possession of beautiful things. Traditionally, luxury goods have been defined as “goods for which the mere use of display of a particular branded product brings prestige to the owner”(Husic and Cicic 2007) Luxury Consumption Factors. In my research I am concerned with Design Culture, Value, Attitude and Behaviour around who the luxury consumer is, but more importantly, what exemplifies sustainable luxury? Furthermore, I set out to challenge the traditional culture of collecting contemporary silversmithing by exploring material perceptions within a changing society by re-shaping drivers that stimulate a desire to invest in precious metal artefacts. The research investigates how different cultures associate with silver through their cultural identity. I approach silver unconventionally and with insight. I aim to present silver from fresh perspectives and to give it contemporary relevance in people’s everyday lives informed through extensive research on the ways in which silver has traditionally been used and displayed. This has led me to question its most basic concepts and forms. With the ‘Table Top to the Wall’ series, Architect #1 & #2, I challenge the places where silver objects conventionally ‘live’ – in or on furniture – and demonstrate how the expected may evolve naturally into the unexpected. I describe this new work as ‘abstract jewellery for buildings’. By designing these objects to adorn walls, I simply extend the boundaries of possible places to display silver in the home or in public spaces.

Nestas páxinas realizase unha breve análise do autor, así como das tipoloxías de ourivería relixiosa no cambio do barroco ó neoclásico en Galicia, pretendendo ó mesmo tempo ser unha chamada de atención sobre a pratería galega, un patrimonio que forma parte da nosa imaxinería popular e que a miúdo permanece esquecida The purpose of this research is the study and attribution of new pieces to Jacobo Pecul Montenegro (1753-1817) a silversmith from Santiago de Compostela. His production refl ects an aesthetic clearly infl uenced by French forms which he learnt from his father Claudio Pecul. But also Galician artists´ work, such as Ferreiro or Simón Rodríguez, had an impact on Montenegro’s own creations. Twenty four new pieces have been selected from parish crosses, holy chalices, ciboriums, censers, “navetas” and monstrances, which are referenced in Pecul’s manuscript “Libro de Caja”. They were extracted by Couselo Bouzas in his Galicia Artística, and catalogued in the Diocesan Archive of the Catholic Church. These pieces have been studied and attributed to Jacobo Pecul Montenegro by the guidelines set by José Manuel López Vázquez, who has studied the work of this silversmith in depth. This article attempts to make a brief study of both the author and the silversmithing typologies in the shift from the baroque style to the neoclassical style. And at the same time this study also aims to draw attention to Galician silversmithing, which is a patrimony of our popular imagery, and more often than not highly neglected. SI

- Abstract
The silversmith’s workroom of Vicente Perate was one of the most actives in the city of Madrid during the first third of the 19th century. While executing numerous pieces, he regularly participated at the activities organized by the Silversmith College, where he also held many different posts. Likewise, he enjoyed great professional success as is shown by the almost half a hundred conserved workpieces of huge artistic quality and wide variety of type, as well as by the fact that he had topped the contribution’s list of the Madrilenian craftsmen from that period., El obrador del platero Vicente Perate fue uno de los más activos en Madrid durante el primer tercio del siglo XIX.

A monographic study of the caskets of Saints Adrian and Natalia from The Art Institute of Chicago was carried out. Historiography of Romanesque art has forgotten this piece, but it was studied analyzing the life cycle of both Eastern Saints, examining its technical aspects as well as its epigraphs. All is kept in the study limits of the origin of its worship in Byzantium, the transfer of their relics to Rome and during the 9th and 10th centuries, its spread in the old Astur-Leonese Kingdom. Finally, we studied the iconography in relation to the Passio written about the martyr and a comparison is carried out with the silversmith works in San Isidoro de Leon.

[EUS] Lan honen xedea Laudion dagoen Ermuko Andra Mariren santutegiko ondare historiko eta artistikoa aztertzea da. Araban kokatzen da, Laudion, Kamaraka mendiaren magalean, malda handiko zonaldean. Tenpluaren alboan Santa Luziari eskainitako ermita txiki bat dago eta apaizaren etxea. Apur bat urrunago, San Antonioren eta Santa Apoloniaren ermita dugu. 2002ko abenduaren 4an kultura-ondasun gisa inskribatu zenetik, Euskal Kultura Ondarearen Inbentario Nagusian jasota geratu zen Ermuko Andra Mariren eliza, monumentu multzoen kategorian eta, beraz, babes berezia du. Metodo historiko-artistikoa oinarri hartuta, ondarea aztertu dugu, obren kalitatea eta interes artistikoa behar bezala baloratzeko eta santutegiaren abaroan mende luzez gordeta egon den ondarearen altxorrak ezagutarazteko, herritar guztiek erabili eta gozatzeko aukera izan dezaten. Lau kapitulu handitan egituratu dugu liburua. Lehenengoan, santutegiaren arkitektura jorratu dugu, alegia, eraikuntza faseak, habearteen ezaugarriak, dorrea, sakristia, Aretoko Andra Mariren kapera eta atxikita dauden beste zenbait eraikin. Bigarren kapitulu handian, santutegiko hormak apaintzen dituzten erretaulei buruzkoak azaldu ditugu: erretaula nagusi errenazentista ikusgarria eta alboetako erretaulak, San Josefi eskainitakoa, San Sebastianena, San Joanes bataiatzailearen erretaula galdua eta Ermuko Andra Mari nagusi duen erretaula neoklasikoa. Ondoren, elizan gordeta jarraitzen duten eskultura exentu nagusiak aztertzen dira. Azkenik, gaur egunera arte iraun duten arte dekoratiboak aurkezten dira, interes handiko zenbait pieza azpimarratuta, horiek erakusten baitute santutegiak ingurunean izan duen garrantzi handia. Horrez gain, ikerketa egiteko erabili den bibliografia ere aletzen da azken atalean.

Estas dos piezas vienen a sumar una valiosa aportación al conocimiento de nuevos enclaves en otros municipios próximos., We study two inscribed rings of Late Antiquity from two sites in the Southern foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, Madrid: La Cabilda in Hoyo de Manzanares and La Moraleja in Colmenar Viejo. The important human occupation of this mountain area between the 6th and 8th centuries A.D. has been demostrated by recent studies conducted in the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares. These two pieces are a valuable contribution to the knowledge of new enclaves of other nearby municipalities.

The casket now in the Museum of the Cathedral of Girona is an unparalleled piece of silversmithing from the Caliphate of Cordoba. It is a unique object both because of the historical information it provides and due to its artistic value. It was commissioned by al-Ḥakam II as a gift for his son, the future Caliph Hišām II, and it can be dated to 976 or a little earlier. This essay offers for the first time the complete reading of its external dedicatory inscription, and it also includes an extensive historiographic review of the studies devoted to it. The names mentioned in the casket inscriptions are then discussed, as well as the date of its production and its possible use. The author raises some of the questions suggested by this object that need to be further researched, as its appearance in Girona in the 19th century without evidence about its provenance., La arqueta andalusí que se conserva en la Catedral de Girona es una pieza sin igual de la platería califal cordobesa; es única tanto por su información histórica como por su valor artístico.

- Abstract
Araban kokatzen da, Laudion, Kamaraka mendiaren magalean, malda handiko zonaldean. Tenpluaren alboan Santa Luziari eskainitako ermita txiki bat dago eta apaizaren etxea. Apur bat urrunago, San Antonioren eta Santa Apoloniaren ermita dugu. 2002ko abenduaren 4an kultura-ondasun gisa inskribatu zenetik, Euskal Kultura Ondarearen Inbentario Nagusian jasota geratu zen Ermuko Andra Mariren eliza, monumentu multzoen kategorian eta, beraz, babes berezia du. Metodo historiko-artistikoa oinarri hartuta, ondarea aztertu dugu, obren kalitatea eta interes artistikoa behar bezala baloratzeko eta santutegiaren abaroan mende luzez gordeta egon den ondarearen altxorrak ezagutarazteko, herritar guztiek erabili eta gozatzeko aukera izan dezaten. Lau kapitulu handitan egituratu dugu liburua. Lehenengoan, santutegiaren arkitektura jorratu dugu, alegia, eraikuntza faseak, habearteen ezaugarriak, dorrea, sakristia, Aretoko Andra Mariren kapera eta atxikita dauden beste zenbait eraikin. Bigarren kapitulu handian, santutegiko hormak apaintzen dituzten erretaulei buruzkoak azaldu ditugu: erretaula nagusi errenazentista ikusgarria eta alboetako erretaulak, San Josefi eskainitakoa, San Sebastianena, San Joanes bataiatzailearen erretaula galdua eta Ermuko Andra Mari nagusi duen erretaula neoklasikoa. Ondoren, elizan gordeta jarraitzen duten eskultura exentu nagusiak aztertzen dira. Azkenik, gaur egunera arte iraun duten arte dekoratiboak aurkezten dira, interes handiko zenbait pieza azpimarratuta, horiek erakusten baitute santutegiak ingurunean izan duen garrantzi handia. Horrez gain, ikerketa egiteko erabili den bibliografia ere aletzen da azken atalean.
