'Programa de Especialização Docente Brasil' (PED Brasil) is a learning and professional development program in mathematics or science education for primary or secondary in-service schoolteachers. Designed to be a teacher education program that addresses issues related to educational quality and equity in racially, socially, and academically diverse Brazilian schools, PED Brasil intended to craft a program with a signature pedagogy that could be capable of shaping the ways of thinking and acting in the teaching profession. PED Brasil does it by integrating different dimensions of knowledge and demonstrating various aspects of professional practice, considering the democratic society we aim to build. Abstract This manuscript, as a conceptual article and communication piece, offers insights into the pedagogy of play as a philosophy of education and a wide-ranging set of methods and techniques. It intends to encourage readers to invest (further) in playful learning in language learning. To this aim, playful learning is first problematized within language education. The paper then presents an expanding (revised) outline of play, elaborating on the wide spectrum of pedagogical affordances that playful approaches can provide. It employs the nomenclature, 'language learning playscapes' to cast light on major components and principles of a playful approach to language education. The article also addresses the compatibility and contribution of such approach within various frameworks of practice. It particularly advocates 'signature pedagogy', while making connections with other teaching paradigms (e.g., student-centered learning, positive education). Readers are also updated on practical ideas and related case studies to implement playful language learning more efficiently. Finally, the article touches upon several areas of development within playful language education especially developing appropriate language learning materials and playful assessment.

In applied professions achieving a professional identity is a key educational goal during the transition from student to professional. To facilitate this transition within academic teaching, it is essential to establish dedicated reflective spaces using creative methods. The study investigated the perspectives of final-year social work students on their professional identity formation as near-future social workers, using the photovoice methodology. Conducted within a dedicated research seminar course, the study involved 29 participants between 2018 and 2021, resulting in the collection of 289 photovoices. Four components of the social worker’s professional identity emerged: a) between the personal and the professional; b) professional responsibility; c) spaces of guidance, maintenance, and support; and d) personal-professional growth. From the reflexive perspective of final-year social work students, this study indicates a dynamic approach to understanding their professional identity formation as near-future social workers, shaped by the interconnectedness of knowing, being, and doing social work. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted social work education, but limited research exists on its long-term toll on field directors. Using a thematic approach, 16 field directors were interviewed to explore the question, "What are the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on social work field directors?" Themes that emerged included the power of the field community; a collective sense of fatigue; questions of perceived value; and the need to respond to agency and student challenges. This includes both initial teacher education (PE-ITE) and continuous professional development (PE-CPD), holding the responsibility for preparing pre-service teachers (PSTs) and teacher educators, as well as facilitating the ongoing professional learning of in-service teachers (ISTs) and teacher educators. This study entails a comprehensive scoping review covering the period from 2015 to 2023, encompassing studies within the broad field of teacher education in PE across international contexts, all examined through the perspective of Shulman’s, L. S. (2005. “Signature Pedagogies in the Professions.” Daedalus 134 (3): 52–59) concept of signature pedagogies. The purpose was two-fold: (1): to map the current literature on teacher education in PE (including PE-ITE and PE-CPD for both ISTs and teacher educators), and (2) to propose a preliminary shared language of signature pedagogies of teacher education in PE.Signature pedagogies refer to the forms of teaching-learning that leap to mind when thinking about the preparation and ongoing learning and development of teachers (i.e. pre-service teachers, in-service teachers and teacher educators; Shulman, L. S. 2005. “Signature Pedagogies in the Professions.” Daedalus 134 (3): 52–59). Signature pedagogies are both pervasive and routine, cutting across topics and courses, programs, and institutions, and are described through three layers of structure – the surface, deep, and implicit.The research process was guided by a five-stage framework for conducting a scoping review. In line with the specific purposes articulated above, the research question guiding the review was: What is known from the literature on signature pedagogies of teacher education in PE? The search was restricted to articles published between 2015–2023. Both empirical and conceptual articles (i.e. those with data collection and those without) were included, provided the inclusion criteria were met. A total of 465 articles were included in the review, and the pedagogies identified from each article were co-constructed into themes/categories.Three signature pedagogies of teacher education in PE across international contexts are identified and presented in terms of their surface, deep and implicit structure, including: (auto)biographical pedagogies, experiential pedagogies, and pedagogies of professional learning. Subsequently, we explore the similarities and differences between each of the three groups of pedagogies and what makes a pedagogy of teacher education in PE distinct from a pedagogy of teacher education more broadly.This study offers a preliminary shared language of teacher education pedagogies in the field of PE and is intended to open a dialogue around preparing and supporting pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, and teacher educators in the context of PE. The present study presents a scoping review of research on teaching and learning criminal justice, as it appeared in the Journal of Criminal Justice Education from 2016-2022. The process serves to take stock of the advancements of the field, clarify the need for a shared pedagogical lexicon, identify critical gaps in research and practice, and suggest foundations for future research and practice, including the articulation of a signature pedagogy or pedagogies. Purpose: This study attempts to identify the drivers for change in Public Relations education and what assumptions are made about professional practice. The authors suggest signature pedagogy has the potential to deepen our understanding of the teaching and learning of Public Relations and what this means as the Public Relations curriculum adapts. The paper has theoretical and practical value. It forefronts the concept of signature pedagogy as a fresh way to look at Public Relations teaching and learning that can be developed. Design/methodology/approach: This paper aims to explore the historical and contemporary context of teaching Public Relations within a university setting, how it has evolved and the assumptions that underpin it both nationally and internationally. Using a mixed methods approach, the paper investigates how the curriculum has changed since 2000, how it interacts with industry and how it reflects educational historical and contemporary frameworks. It also explores the assumptions on which Public Relations education was and is based and whether signature pedagogy is evidenced. Findings: This study concludes that, from a signature pedagogy perspective, many current Public Relations curricula emphasise surface structures of learning. Deep structures, focusing on critical engagement and conceptual approaches to problem solving, are more variable, disconnected and contested. The data indicate the existence of an Anglo-American, skills-based approach to Public Relations knowledge, alongside international nuances around multi-culturalism. From a practical viewpoint, the paper contributes to how Public Relations programmes can be designed, taught and adapted in the future. This document provides a summary of a study conducted on instructional strategies used by Business, Marketing, and Information Technology teachers in the United States. The study collected data through a survey that included demographic questions and Likert-type scale questions on instructional strategies. The top three most commonly used strategies were interactive lecture, guided practice, and project-based learning. The study also analyzed the data based on different demographic categories such as region, school type, certification method, and years of experience. The findings showed that there were no significant differences in the use of instructional strategies across most demographic categories, except for years of experience. Overall, the study provides insights into the pedagogical practices of Business, Marketing, and Information Technology teachers in the K-12 education setting. The study suggests that identifying effective instructional strategies could improve teacher education programs and student outcomes in business education. [Extracted from the article]

Food production and consumption are emblematic of challenges to operate within planetary boundaries, whilst providing minimum access for all. They draw on natural and human resources and are de facto drivers of land-use. Moreover, their recognition in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals has spurred growing awareness of food system fragility reflected in dietary orientation, waste streams and food security. Education is a key lever in transformation for food system resilience. Yet, food sustainability competencies and their signature pedagogies are in their infancy. This paper offers a reflection of their development at TU Dublin’s School of Food Science & Environmental Health, which has integrated sustainability in its strategic orientation. Foundations for transformation emerged in 2020 when the School co-created, with its students, a professional development programme to build capacity for integrating sustainability in its education portfolio. Informed by industry, publications and policy frameworks, the programme assimilated inputs from stakeholders across the food system, including enterprise and the public sector, food professionals and sustainability experts. The School joined an Erasmus+ funded initiative to create a model for developing sustainability competences through service learning (NEMOS). An initial benchmarking was undertaken using a TU Dublin tool that mapped modules to the SDGs and measured sustainability embeddedness using AASHE-STARS. A thematic analysis of staff interviews and student focus groups revealed 70 food sustainability competencies over 9 categories: farm practice; climate change; product development; circular bioeconomy; waste reduction and valorsiation; measurement and reporting; food safety regulation; environmental impact; and sustainable food business. It noted congruence between skills developed through service learning and the epistemological basis for sustainability. Perceived barriers to transformation included regulation; slow adoption of innovation; supply chain fragility and marketing orientation. Whilst this case is limited to one school’s journey, it contributes to an understanding of food-sustainability competency development through service learning.

In academic libraries, library instruction often takes the form of one-shot instruction and is not always deeply linked to the broader curricula. This article will argue that if library instruction in an academic setting is to be perceived as beneficial to student learning, it needs to coalesce around a set of specific values and teaching practices. To do so, this article will build on scholarship about signature pedagogies to continue the work of identifying a signature pedagogy for academic libraries engaged in information literacy instruction. To Lee S. Shulman, signature pedagogies outline the teaching practices used to educate new professionals, and they are essential to understanding how a profession develops. By participating in the process of developing a signature pedagogy, academic librarians would be able to engage in questions about the nature and purpose of their work, as well as set a foundation for how practicing and developing library professionals are educated and continue to be educated.

Social Work Field Practicum is an essential to Social Work education. Literature shows that there are certain challenges and problems in Social Work Field Practicum. The intention of this study was to investigate experiences and challenges faced by graduate students during training of Field Work. To explain the issue, the following study used phenomenological research approach. In the present research, multi-stage sampling was used and firstly two universities of Punjab namely, University of the Punjab Lahore and University of Sargodha, Sargodha were selected; secondly department of Social Work of the above said universities were selected by following purposive sampling and thirdly the participants of the study were contacted through the department. Criteria for the selection of participants were the students who have completed field work during graduate program. This paper describes a multi-year project to inform academic development (AD) for instructors at a large university, as the result of a shift towards greater equity, diversity, inclusion, and access (EDIA) efforts. A variety of data were collected, along with extant literature focused on teaching and learning, to identify campus needs and priorities for AD, resulting in a signature pedagogy: the Framework for Inclusive Teaching Excellence. FITE enables a shared understanding of teaching and learning with an EDIA lens, which has been integrated across all aspects of AD programming and informs how teaching and learning are valued and assessed. This article describes how faculty in a teacher preparation program developed a signature pedagogy, a teacher candidate action-research project rooted in the Universal Design for Learning Framework. A dual perspective involved teacher candidates investigating the efficacy of their practice and articulating their learning, while their teacher educators simultaneously investigated the process of supporting the candidates through the curricular shift. The transformation toward the framework of action-research oriented teacher education and using research-based teaching strategies provided teacher candidates with two requisite skills for the development of teaching practice: (a) research-based strategies used as a tool for the instruction of all learners, and (b) practice of action research that offers evidence via which the teacher candidate develops an understanding of learner outcomes and growth. This article reviews literature to support this pedagogical shift, describes the implementation of the innovative course curriculum relating to the UDL (Universal Design for Learning) Framework, investigates action research as a mean of understanding practice, addresses faculty's critical self-reflection, and concludes with a discussion of implications for teacher preparation. In this essay, I distinguish between the two terms, exploring how Erving Goffman’s (1986) concept of frame analysis can be a useful approach to stewardship. I contrast Goffman’s (1986) approach with that of frame alignment (Snow et al., 1986), noting that frames are useful for clarifying the improvement efforts of scholarly practice while also putting those who use them at risk of encapsulation. I explore how the signature pedagogy of the CPED Framework itself is such a frame. I hope this essay will be useful for faculty in CPED-informed programs designing courses to balance the dual development of scholarly practice and stewardship, and that it will be useful for CPED-informed EdD candidates integrating multiple frames into the definition and solution of PoPs. As the social work profession emerged, the primary method for training social workers was the apprentice model, now referred to as field education. In 2008, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) declared field education the signature pedagogy of social work education in the Educational Policies and Standards (EPAS), thus connecting it to accreditation. Despite this prioritization over other areas of social work education, debate continues as to whether field education meets the criteria of signature pedagogy. This study applied a contextual analysis to determine the extent to which a sample of 16 undergraduate social work programs demonstrate alignment with the signature pedagogy designation. The tool for analysis was the EPAS self-study, a primary document required in the CSWE accreditation process. The selected criteria for examination were two defining features of signature pedagogy: evidence of widespread recognition and routine inclusion across the curriculum. Findings revealed significant variation in both criteria areas among the sample group, likely influenced by ambiguity regarding signature pedagogy found within the EPAS. While data within the EPAS self-studies substantiates the important role of field education, additional themes revealed an opportunity to re-define and expand the signature pedagogy of the profession that could benefit both social work education and the practice community. The purpose of this study was to explore the co-construction of an action research (AR) experience between a teacher educator and pre-service teachers (PSTs). Participants were six PSTs and a teacher educator who supervised their school placement. The teacher educator introduced the PSTs to, and facilitated them through, the AR process while creating an environment in which participation, co-construction, and shared investment were key elements across the group. A critical friend assisted the teacher educator to facilitate the PSTs' experience of AR. Data included (i) audio-taped weekly discussions between the teacher educator and PSTs, (ii) the teacher educator's field notes, (iii) audio-recorded weekly discussions between the teacher educator and critical friend, and (iv) semi-structured post-interviews with PSTs and the teacher educator. Data were analysed qualitatively using the constant comparison approach. Results indicated that the three crucial aspects of a co-constructed AR experience were: centrality of the critical friend, the teacher educator sharing her experiences of AR with PSTs, and creating of a collaborative and supportive learning environment across AR cycles. In conclusion, this study indicates that there needs to be a shift in the understanding of how best to support a shared learning space where we can discuss and encourage each other in co-constructive ways. Unprecedented reform to teacher education in England, through the Initial Teacher Training Market Review, led to the threat of removal of the right for established providers to offer programmes of initial teacher education beyond 2024 without reaccreditation. Such policy reform has been constructed in relation to a perceived gap in research about knowledge of the best way to educate or train new teachers. Using Lee S. Shulman's concept of signature pedagogies we consider the varying ways in which theoretical ideas are underpinned by common models of, and approaches to, teacher education pedagogy. We mobilise Shulman to analyse five models, which we categorise as 'knowledge-first' or 'people-first', to see the extent to which, if at all, there is a theoretically informed signature pedagogy for initial teacher education. Our analysis shows that there is no one discernible knowledge base or theory that underpins a signature pedagogy for teacher education, but a suite of possibilities about how a signature pedagogy of teacher education could be understood. Moreover, it is our contention that policy reform of initial teacher education based on econometric analysis fails to recognise the most important dimension of a signature pedagogy, learning how to act with integrity as a professional teacher. Clinical supervision is widely recognized as a professional specialty requiring specialized training. As the signature pedagogy of the mental health professions, such training needs to emphasize the instructional vs. clinical nature of the supervision enterprise. However, a comprehensive description of supervisor training programs in mental health professions, including pedagogical approaches taught and employed during training, is lacking. We conducted a scoping review of supervisor training programs in English-language, refereed journal articles during 2012–2021 to identify the location, training parameters, delivery formats, topics, teaching methods, pedagogies, and professional guidelines underpinning delivery of the program, and evaluations of their effectiveness. We located 34 training programs offered within counseling, psychology, and social work. This paper reports on ongoing research aimed at characterizing a signature pedagogy (Shulman, 2005) of technology-enhanced task-based language teaching (TETBLT). To achieve this goal, we initially identified 15 pedagogical principles and practices distinctive of TETBLT. This initial set of principles and practices were motivated by second language acquisition theories (Doughty & Long, 2003), methodological approaches in foreign language teaching (Kramsch, 2014), and state-of-the-art publications on computer-assisted language learning (Chapelle & Sauro, 2017). During the first phase of the study, we consulted an initial group of 34 experts in the field, using the Delphi technique to achieve gradual consensus about the set of principles. After analyzing the first set of responses (N = 23) to the principles, which attained a degree of agreement averaging 71% and ranging from 48% to 96%, we refined the principles incorporating the feedback received and sent out a second questionnaire, which allowed us to reach a consensus about a set of eight robust pedagogical principles for TETBLT. The main aim of this paper is to address the increasing need for science-art integration across all levels of education globally. Specifically, the need to identify a signature pedagogy for the Global Science Opera (GSO) that can be used in teaching and learning contexts in formal and non-formal education. This part of the paper draws upon the seminal work of Lee Shulman (2005) to contemplate and propose a signature pedagogy for the GSO. Contemporary ideas from the science-art teaching and learning sources are also used to develop a sound pedagogical foundation for the approach advocated by the GSO. We argue that the development of a signature pedagogy for the GSO provides clarity around the challenge of developing a standard approach to teaching science through art activities. This paper presents the GSO practices that has the potential influence to reshape science teaching and learning process through art.

'Once upon a time four very different women went into the Academy. They did not share a disciplinary homeland but forged new bonds closer than kinship and worked together for teaching to triumph over research. Things change, and scattered to the four corners of the realm they vowed to remain true to their playful hearts. Through missives, they storied, imagined, and strove to sing new worlds of wonderment into being.'This paper chronicles their quest, tells of the old ways and the new, tells tales of beings and becomings, of how we make stories and stories make us. We share our experience of academic development as inherently playful. We suggest that reflective practice, narratives of teaching philosophy and exploration of teaching identity engage academics with an exploration of their possible teaching selves. This potentiality is inherently fictional – we invite academics to dwell in imagined worlds, to imagine the possible, to exist in uncertainty, and initiate uncanny encounters. By engaging colleagues playfully, we can support them in pushing the boundaries of self and practice. This paper will embody an uncanny encounter, as we interrogated our work through letters exchanged and remixed to create imagined worlds and imaginary friends. A spirit of play brought a willingness to accept and embrace constraints, to try something difficult where success was not guaranteed. Extending playfulness into our methodology brought risk, challenge, and failure as we lost ourselves in fictional flow, until reflection-in-action restored us. We propose that this union between playful fiction and reflection can promise a happily ever after. Reader should we marry them?

The author discusses a professional perspective for nurturing teaching and learning (T&L) practice to support a community of business educators in a Technological University in Ireland. The article is aimed at deans and associate deans by disseminating practical T&L strategies for use as a basis of envisioning their own school approaches, and in so doing is offering an approach to the systemizing of administration of academic organizations. The author explores faculty professional development, communication strategies, and faculty engagement initiatives—all designed to support the ongoing development of a community of Business educators. Addressing the challenges of T&L at scale requires strategic pedagogical change, working with faculty, professional support teams, students, and the wider University to ensure the successful delivery of innovative business programs for today's learner diversity. The authors reflect on the importance of signature pedagogies in interprofessional education. Topics include the interrelated dimensions of signature pedagogies like surface, deep and implicit structures, the concrete and operational acts of teaching and learning like case discussions, bedside instruction and lecture, and the essence of professional identity.

The authors apply the signature pedagogies framework for pedagogical foundations in counselor education put forth by Baltrinic and Wachter Morris (In press) to counseling leadership. Accordingly, we first define counseling leadership and describe the limited literature focused on pedagogical practices related to counseling leadership. Next, we discuss supervision and use the notion of broad and specific features as discussed within Baltrinic and Wachter Morris (In press) to systematically examine whether there is a signature pedagogy for counseling leadership, and purport how supervision of counseling leadership largely fulfills the criteria. Finally, we discuss how supervision of counseling leadership can be utilized and further expanded, followed by a consideration of the subsequent implications for counseling leadership practice and future research.

In a response to Baltrinic and Wachter Morris (2020), I expand on the term signature pedagogy and illustrate how clinical supervision satisfies the criteria for this designation in the counseling field. I then suggest an alternative term, “pedagogical foundations” (from Baltrinic and Wachter Morris), to ground work towards the authors’ goals of asking the ‘right questions’ about the ‘best things’ underlying counselor education practices and research. Finally, I outline some additional avenues (toward the same goals) via explorations of traditional learning theories and science of learning principles that emphasize student learning processes in the classroom - how students learn.

In response to Baltrinic and Wachter Morris’ challenge, the authors discuss whether the counseling profession has a signature pedagogy in the area of multicultural and social justice competencies. The authors examine broad and specific features of signature pedagogies at the professional, program, and course levels for multicultural and social justice competencies.

Signature pedagogies have been identified as a conduit for unifying programs and socializing professionals to have similar values, skills, knowledge, and practices. Recently, Baltrinic and Wachter Morris (in press) put out a call to counselor educators to reflect on and consider signature pedagogies. Signature pedagogies in counselor education have been minimally explored and based on findings of empirical studies, there appears to be variability in some areas of preparation such as research training at the master’s level. In this article, we join in the dialogue about signature pedagogies in counselor education by discussing research training at the master’s level. We also provide a framework for initial steps toward developing a signature pedagogy in this domain and suggestions for empirical exploration.

Research in counseling is at risk of becoming impertinent, if not irrelevant, with an over-emphasis on perceptions of counselors or counselors in-training, and a lack of evidence supporting client-centered outcomes and community needs. Students seeking doctoral degrees in training may have limited interest in research, and research courses are typically taught outside of the discipline by individuals unaffiliated with the counseling profession. Research courses may not be aligned with the needs of counseling researchers who focus on individuals and small groups. Developing a signature pedagogy emphasizing tools and methods consistent with the needs of emerging counseling researchers may be important to elevating counseling research and expanding outreach opportunities to communities, agencies and stakeholders.

This article discusses the research question What are the conditions for academic learning for students receiving special education in years 5–10? These have been examined by studying the surface structure and certain elements in the deeper structure of both special education and general education. The data consists of video observations of 8 individual students who have been granted special education. Through qualitative and quantitative analyses, we have found that the surface structures of both special education and general education are nearly identical. For the most part the instruction is teacher-controlled, the students receiving special education get more teacher support in special education than in general education and they cooperate to a very small degree with other students in both types of education. All in all, the students involved in special education appear to be offered the best conditions for learning in special education. Possible explanations and implications are discussed.

New social annotation practices have the potential to become a "signature pedagogy" for educators in literary studies, because social annotation encapsulates both the expected learning outcomes and the underlying value commitments of literature education. We give an account of a project conducted by colleagues at the Education University of Hong Kong, during which colleagues explored social annotation technologies in literary studies courses. After implementing social annotation in our courses, instructors held roundtable discussions, collected surveys and conducted focus group interviews. Basing our interpretation of these data on Louise Rosenblatt's transactional theory of reading and writing, we propose that social annotation can help students engage with literary texts more effectively by showing them how to move toward an aesthetic mode of reading. Students participating in social annotation, moreover, understood its application to literary studies in ways that directly reproduced Rosenblatt's account of literary interpretation. Signature Pedagogy in social work education has been well discussed in the American context, yet, less so in Canada. In the United States, field education has been proclaimed as the signature pedagogy for social work in 2008 and reaffirmed in 2015. To date, the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE), has affirmed field education as a cornerstone of social work education, yet has not declared it as its signature pedagogy. The claim that all professions have a signature pedagogy piqued our curiosity about our Canadian position. This mixed methods study reflects the voices of three stakeholder groups in Western Canada. Focus groups were utilized to explore social work students, field education staff, and faculty members' understandings of social work signature pedagogy, and inform an on-line national survey of faculty and field education staff. Utilizing thematic analysis and descriptive statistics, the findings suggest common and disparate views between participant groups. Despite nuances in understanding, strong suggestions by some scholars, and some support for the value of defining signature pedagogy, there is not yet agreement on signature pedagogy in Canadian social work education. Signature pedagogies are widely used in professional education to prepare students for the complex and unpredictable nature of professional work. We argue that assessment moments involving professional artefacts contribute to the evaluation and formation of professional knowledge, skills and moral understandings – and thus to the signature of the pedagogy. The 'authenticity' these professional artefacts add to assessment is of particular relevance for understanding the pedagogic signature. Drawing on interviews from a professional study programme in dental hygiene, we employ sociocultural theories to analyse how different assessment moments are used to evaluate and develop students' competences of working with professional artefacts: dental radiographs. The findings show how the use of professional artefacts in three different assessment moments requires students to engage deeply with the epistemic, practical and moral dimensions of their profession. Signature pedagogies have been identified for medicine and nursing, however are not yet resolved for allied health. This paper explores feedback as part of the signature pedagogy for health professions clinical placements. It adopts a Theory of Practice Architectures perspective to understand feedback practices, within the context of placements which involved student mentoring. Two dominant practices were found to characterise feedback: creating a comfortable learning environment through feedback, and achieving feedback for learning. Analysis of the arrangements revealed the impact of educators' caseloads in enabling, and more often, constraining feedback practices. Student mentors ensured that feedback occurred, suggesting that students can recognise and contribute to feedback as part of a signature pedagogy. Further, similarity across the two professions in this study supports the contention that there is a common signature pedagogy for clinical placements. Innovative practice in a classroom adds challenges and tensions to programs and institutional structures in higher education. With the recent emphasis on curricula reform, there is a great focus on assessment and pedagogical practices to support student learning. To illustrate the tensions arising from these efforts, we present four pedagogical and assessment innovation approaches using both Shulman’s (2005) Signature Pedagogies and Tatar’s (2007) Design Tensions frameworks. The four approaches include problem-based learning, game-based learning, case-based learning, and technology-enhanced learning. A narrative for each approach examines and addresses tensions using Shulman’s (2005) surface, deep and implicit structures. We argue that there is an interconnected complexity and conflicting visions among the micro- (e.g., classroom or practicum), meso- (e.g., program), and macro- (e.g., institution) levels. We acknowledge that dynamic tensions continually exist and needs to be thoughtfully navigated in support of innovative assessment and pedagogies in higher education. Suite à l’importance accrue récemment attachée à la réforme des programmes d’études, l’accent est mis sur l’évaluation et les pratiques pédagogiques pour soutenir l’apprentissage des étudiants. Afin d’illustrer les tensions qui découlent de ces efforts, nous présentons quatre approches de pédagogie et d’évaluation innovatrices qui font appel à la fois aux cadres de Shulman, Signature Pedagogies (2005), et à ceux de Tatar, Design Tensions (2007). Les quatre approches comprennent l’apprentissage par problèmes, l’apprentissage fondé sur le jeu, l’apprentissage basé sur des cas et l’apprentissage amélioré par les technologies. Chaque approche est examinée et traite des tensions qui en découlent en faisant appel aux structures de surface, profondes et implicites de Shulman (2005). The design studio and the associated design review can be regarded as the signature pedagogy of architectural education, where students garner the essence of what it means to be an architect. Here, novices are transformed into architects through the acquisition of architectural cultural capital. This paper investigates the design review in East African schools of architecture from a student's perspective, garnered from focus group discussions carried out in five schools of architecture, and corroborated through observations. Findings indicate challenges in the design review, vis-à-vis the broader goals and objectives of architectural education. However, it did uncover attempts at change, via a 'back seat instructor approach', for example, breaking down the stereotype of the design review as a hostile environment for students.
