Objective: Despite its clinical importance and impact on quality of life, asthma is an underdiagnosed condition, and information on its incidence in Latin American children is limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of asthma in schoolchildren from an educational institution in Pereira, Colombia, and to characterize related factors. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. The prevalence of asthma was determined using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (isaac) tool, validated in Spanish. A non-probabilistic convenience sampling method was used, selecting schoolchildren aged 6 to 12 years from an educational institution between May and July 2022. The survey was completed by their caregivers. Results: Data were collected from 142 schoolchildren. The average age was 9.1 ± 1.9 years, with a female majority of 54.2%. The current asthma rate (“wheezing in the last 12 months”) was 5.6%, while the cumulative frequency was 19.7% (“wheezing ever”). Only 2.8% had severe asthma, with an underdiagnosis rate of 60.8%. A family history of the disease was found to be a risk factor for ever having wheezing (or: 3.54; 95% CI: 1.51-8.35) and for a previous asthma diagnosis (or: 4.62; 95% CI: 1.28-16.7). Conclusions: The current asthma prevalence is similar to studies reported in Colombia. A significant association was found between family history and the likelihood of an asthma diagnosis in schoolchildren. These results may contribute to the development of future community health strategies for early diagnosis and prevention of complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
