Simple Summary: The effects of different moisture contents on seed germination and seedling growth of six desert shrubs were determined in a greenhouse. It was found that 5% and 10% limited seed germination and seedling growth, while 15–20% resulted in the highest seed germination and biomass accumulation. In addition, we found that Caragana korshinskii had the strongest survivability, while Nitraria sibirica had the lowest viable survivability. Our results emphasise that cultivation of Caragana korshinskii, which is more drought tolerant, is preferred in desert areas for the recovery of vegetation in the region. Moisture is the most important environmental factor limiting seed regeneration of shrubs in desert areas. Therefore, understanding the effects of moisture changes on seed germination, morphological and physiological traits of shrubs is essential for vegetation restoration in desert areas. In March to June 2023, in a greenhouse using the potting method, we tested the effects of soil moisture changes (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%) on seed germination and seedling growth of six desert shrubs (Zygophyllum xanthoxylum, Nitraria sibirica, Calligonum mongolicum, Corethrodendron scoparium, Caragana korshinskii, and Corethrodendron fruticosu). Results showed that (1) seed germination percent and vigor index were significantly higher at 15 and 20% soil moisture content than at 5 and 10%; (2) shoot length, primary root length, specific leaf area and biomass of seedlings were significantly higher in the 15% and 20% soil moisture content treatments than in the 5% and 10% treatments; (3) superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) and soluble protein content (SP) decreased with decreasing soil water content, while peroxidase activity (POD) and catalase activity (CAT) showed a decreasing and then increasing trend with increasing soil water content; (4) the six seeds and seedling of shrubs were ranked in order of their survivability in response to changes in soil moisture: Caragana korshinskii > Zygophyllum xanthoxylum > Calligonum mongolicum > Corethrodendron scoparium > Corethrodendron fruticosu > Nitraria sibirica. Our study shows that shrub seedlings respond to water changes by regulating morphological and physiological traits together. More importantly, we found that C. korshinskii, Z. xanthoxylum and C. mongolicum were more survivable when coping with water deficit or extreme precipitation. Simple Summary: This study looked at how three different shrub species in an urban setting were affected by aphid colonisation. Analyses of fourteen factors that describe the photosynthetic pigment concentration and gas exchange to the carbon, nitrogen, and hydrogen partition were conducted. Aphid colonisation had the greatest impact on nitrogen partition and the C/N ratio, parameters that could be recommended in other studies of a similar kind. The studied shrub species had varying responses. Spiraea × vanhouttei and Cydonia japonica demonstrated the strongest responses in terms of nitrogen partition and the C/N ratio. Shrubs are a significant component of urban vegetation found in parks, but they experience various influences from biotic and abiotic agents, among which aphids play an important role. In this work, the effects of aphid colonisation on three shrub species in urban environments were examined. Fourteen parameters were analysed, describing the photosynthetic pigment content and gas exchange to carbon, nitrogen, and hydrogen partitions. While no significant effect of colonisation was found on photosynthetic pigment parameters, the effect was significant on gas exchange parameters. The strongest effect of aphid colonisation achieved was on nitrogen partition and the C/N ratio, parameters that could be suggested for further similar studies. All parameters were classified into two groups according to their principal component analysis, suggesting a correlation between nitrogen and carbon content, the C/N ratio, measured gas exchange parameters, and chlorophyll a content. The ratio between net photosynthesis and dark respiration (A/K) was classified in the second group, suggesting that this parameter provides additional information on the effect of aphid colonisation and deserves special attention in further studies. There were differences in the effect of aphid colonisation on the physiology of the examined shrub species, especially in cases where a decrease in the C/N ratio was achieved in Spirea trilobata and Cydonia japonica, while an increase in the same parameter was recorded in Hybiscus syriacus. The striped hyena is one of the most secretive and enigmatic mammal species. Despite some success in describing their distribution and analyzing population trends, further understanding of the factors affecting reproductive success is needed. Therefore, we present the first analysis of the reproductive success of this species in the wild. We measured the reproductive success of female striped hyenas in at least one litter over 15 breeding seasons. We inspected 33 dens with 67 breeding events during this time and recorded 151 young hyenas. The dens were inhabited for an average of 2 years, with litter sizes ranging from 1 to 4 per reproductive female and most young born between January and June. We also found that litter size was positively associated with lowland areas and shrubs near the den. Despite methodological limitations that we could not overcome given the enigmatic nature of this species, our discovery is crucial because we have shown that reproductive success depends on the habitat in which dens are located, thus ensuring consistent reproductive success over the long‐term cycle. Plant biomass allocation is mainly affected by the environment where each individual grows. In this sense, through the rapid global expansion of impermeable areas, urbanization has strong, albeit poorly understood, consequences on the biomass allocation of plants found in this environment. Nevertheless, the comprehension of biomass allocation processes in urban shrubs remains unclear, because most studies of urban ecology focus on tree species. This is an important gap of knowledge because a great part of urban vegetation is composed of shrubs and their association with trees have positive impacts in urban ecosystem services. In this study, we explored the ecological and potential selective pressure effects of an urbanization gradient on the biomass allocation patterns of aboveground organs of Turnera subulata, a widely distributed tropical shrub. We have demonstrated that, for certain reproductive organs, biomass allocation decreases in locations with higher urbanization. Unlike expected, the biomass of vegetative organs was not affected by urbanization, and we did not observe any effect of urbanization intensity on the variance in biomass allocation to vegetative and reproductive organs. We did not record urbanization-mediated trade-offs in biomass allocation for reproductive and vegetative organs. Instead, the biomass of these structures showed a positive relationship. Our data suggest that urbanization does not result in radical changes in biomass allocation of T. subulata, and neither in the variation of these traits. They indicate that the ability of T. subulata to thrive in urban environments may be associated with life history and morphological mechanisms. Our findings contribute to the understanding of shrub plant responses to urbanization and highlight urbanization as a potential factor in resource allocation differences for different structures and functions in plants living in these environments. Euphorbia tirucalli, commonly known as the pencil cactus or milk bush plant, is used as an alternative medicine. The current study evaluated the phytochemical contents, antibacterial, anticandidal, and antisporicidal potential of the E. tirucalli methanolic extract. The antibacterial and anticandidal activity of E. tirucalli methanolic extract was determined by performing a disc diffusion assay, MIC, MBC, and MCC. The sporicidal activity was tested at different concentrations of extract and exposure times. Phytochemical analyses revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, cardiac glycosides, terpenoids, and tannins in E. tirucalli methanolic extract. Results demonstrated inhibition zones of the extract against Gram-positive bacteria were in range of 22.00-7.00 mm. Meanwhile, inhibition zones of the extract against Gram-negative bacteria were in range of 13.00-7.00 mm. All bacteria were inhibited with MIC values at 1.56-25.0 mg/ml and can be completely killed with MBC values of 20-200 mg/ml. Inhibition zones of E. tirucalli methanolic extract against Candida spp. were in the range of 20.00-8.00 mm. All Candida spp. were inhibited with MIC values at 1.56-100.00 mg/ml and MBC values of 100-300 mg/ml. All concentrations of the extract inhibited all Bacillus spp. spores at different exposure times. In conclusion, the methanolic extract of E. tirucalli exhibits antibacterial, anticandidal, and sporicidal activities. Establishment of saplings of woody ornamental perennials is a challenging task during mass plantation campaigns in degraded landscapes. Consequently, large proportions of transplanted saplings fail to flourish. A two-year field study was conducted with an objective of raising quality saplings of five woody shrubs (Buxus sempervirens, Lawsonia inermis, Murraya paniculata, Schefflera arboricola and Tecoma stans) under the subtropical environment of Northwest India to address this issue. Six-month-old, rooted seedlings of these shrubs were planted in two container types: air-pots and poly bags (Control), arranged in a randomised complete block design replicated three times. A two-year study revealed that container type significantly altered the root and shoot characteristics. The saplings raised in air-pots showed a higher percentage increment for collar diameter, plant height, first order lateral roots, root and shoot dry weight as compared to those grown in poly bags. Observations revealed a higher order of deflected, circled, or kinked roots in the poly bag raised saplings, along with a higher increment in root length due to unchecked extension of tap root(s). Air-pots also exhibited better indices with acceptable root: shoot ratio and sturdiness quotient with negligible root deformities, a necessary pre-requisite for better survival and establishment of transplanted saplings. Chemicals and antibiotics are serious problems that cause the resistance of bacteria and the persistence of chemical residues in food. These chemical products affect human health and promote diseases. Therefore, the use of natural resources, especially plants, appears as an alternative to avoid the harmful impacts of such products. Plant active substances such as essential oils, alkaloids and phenols are of great interest to scientists and have been studied for their biological activities. Essential oils (Eos) from the stems of Santolina africana were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by Gaz Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GCMS). The antioxidant activity of crude extracts and Eos was evaluated by the DPPH assay and the antibacterial activity was evaluated by the disc diffusion method and the broth microdilution method against Gram-positive strains (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative strains (Escherichia coli, Salmonella paratyphi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). S.africana Eos from Morocco and Tunisia were found to be rich in artemisia ketone (35.4% and 44.3%, respectively), santolina alcohol (16.2%and 3.2%, respectively) and isoborneol (6.1% and 26.6%, respectively). Methanol extracts were rich in phenolic and flavonoids contents and showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity. Results exhibited the sensitivity of the strains to essential oils from S. africana especially against Grampositive bacteria. This current research will provide new information about this plant that can be used as a natural antioxidant and antibacterial for industrial purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies examining the influence of understory shrubs and light transmittance through the canopy (LT) (%) on seedling establishment of desired species and litter decomposition have reported inconsistent findings. Uncertainty still also remains about the effects of understory junipers (Juniperus oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus) and LT on survival and growth of black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold.) seedlings as well as on litter decomposition across species' geographical range. Thus, this study aimed to examine the influence of understory junipers and LT on the growth and survival of black pine seedlings. Moreover, how junipers and LT affect litter decomposition was also monitored for eighteen months. Survival and growth of seedlings were most significantly affected by LT and understory junipers. LT and junipers negatively affected the survival of black pine seedlings. LT increased root-collar diameter (RCD) growth of the seedlings, while the RCD growth rate decreased with the presence of understory junipers. Moreover, the influences of LT and junipers on litter mass loss were mainly statistically significant; the presence of junipers and increasing LT in understory retarded litter decomposition. The findings may help our knowledge of ecological processes such as litter decomposition and seedling establishment in black pine forests. The results would also provide important guidance for evaluating the effects of overstory thinning (i.e., providing light to understory) and removing junipers on the ecological processes associated with litter decomposition and seedling recruitment in a black pine stand. Deserts are subject to significant anthropogenic pressure. The capacity to buffer against changes in the local environment and biodiversity are critical for ecosystem functioning. Foundation species can be a solution to rapidly assess ecological function and provide a simple nature‐based solution to protect against continuing biodiversity losses. A foundation species is defined as a species that exerts and promotes a positive set of processes for the biotic network. Two different shrub species in the central drylands of California were used to assay a potential buffer for plant species richness and to examine the species‐specificity of foundation facilitation. A five‐year dataset in two distinct regions differing in aridity was used to test the hypothesis that the direct effects of foundation plants facilitate other plant species and buffer diversity losses to a changing climate. The predicted positive effects of both shrub species on species richness increased with increasing local temperatures sampled. Finally, projected temperature increases for the region in trained Bayesian models demonstrated that both shrub species can profoundly increase in their capacity to facilitate plant species richness. Colloquially, this positive ecological effect can be described as the patronus charm hypothesis because regardless of the form of the protector, shrub species provided a talisman against local loss of richness driven by temperature increases. Crown removal revitalises sand‐fixing shrubs that show declining vigour with age in drought‐prone environments; however, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap by comparing the growth performance, xylem hydraulics and plant carbon economy across different plant ages (10, 21 and 33 years) and treatments (control and crown removal) using a representative sand‐fixing shrub (Caragana microphylla Lam.) in northern China. We found that growth decline with plant age was accompanied by simultaneous decreases in soil moisture, plant hydraulic efficiency and photosynthetic capacity, suggesting that these interconnected changes in plant water relations and carbon economy were responsible for this decline. Following crown removal, quick resprouting, involving remobilisation of root nonstructural carbohydrate reserves, contributed to the reconstruction of an efficient hydraulic system and improved plant carbon status, but this became less effective in older shrubs. These age‐dependent effects of carbon economy and hydraulics on plant growth vigour provide a mechanistic explanation for the age‐related decline and revitalisation of sand‐fixing shrubs. This understanding is crucial for the development of suitable management strategies for shrub plantations constructed with species having the resprouting ability and contributes to the sustainability of ecological restoration projects in water‐limited sandy lands. The timing and duration of autumn leaf phenology marks important transitions in temperate deciduous forests, such as, start of senescence, declining productivity and changing nutrient cycling. Phenological research on temperate deciduous forests typically focuses on upper canopy trees, overlooking the contribution of other plant functional groups like shrubs. Yet shrubs tend to remain green longer than trees, while non-native shrubs, in particular, tend to exhibit an extended growing season that confers a competitive advantage over native shrubs. We monitored leaf senescence and leaf fall (2017–2020) of trees and shrubs (native and non-native) in an urban woodland fragment in Wisconsin, USA. Our findings revealed that, the start of leaf senescence did not differ significantly between vegetation groups, but leaf fall started (DOY 273) two weeks later in shrubs. Non-native shrubs exhibited a considerably delayed start (DOY 262) and end of leaf senescence (DOY 300), with leaf-fall ending (DOY 315) nearly four weeks later than native shrubs and trees. Overall, the duration of the autumn phenological season was longer for non-native shrubs than either native shrubs or trees. Comparison of the timing of spring phenophases with the start and end of leaf senescence revealed that when spring phenology in trees starts later in the season senescence also starts later and ends earlier. The opposite pattern was observed in native shrubs. In conclusion, understanding the contributions of plant functional groups to overall forest phenology requires future investigation to ensure accurate predictions of future ecosystem productivity and help address discrepancies with remote sensing phenometrics. Decorative plants require skillful pruning by gardeners. However, conventional plant modeling techniques have focused only on the biological growth rules of wild plants and do not yet consider artificial care. In this study, an interactive system was developed for modeling the branching structure of artificially cultivated plants, particularly shrub roses. The structural parameters are designed to reflect the intentions of gardeners and differences between rose varieties. The proposed graphical controllers enable users to intuitively manipulate the tree shape, considering biological growth rules and artificial pruning. Drylands makeup over 40% of the terrestrial land surface area and are highly vulnerable to degradation. The drivers of dryland degradation can lead to shifts in vegetation, such as woody plant encroachment into historic arid grasslands. Encroachment often creates connected bare plant interspaces where wind and water erosion can redistribute resources, including sediment and seeds. Dryland restoration can incorporate methods to reduce these connected pathways, thus mitigating erosion and retaining resources locally. One method to reduce connectivity is through connectivity modifier (ConMod) structures. Quantifying sediment and seeds captured in ConMod structures provides insight into resource movement on the landscape and system‐level resilience. We quantified sediment and germinable seeds captured in ConMods in relation to vegetation along a grassland‐to‐shrubland gradient, measured at multiple scales, in the Northern Chihuahuan desert, United States. We found (1) a significant but weak correlation between ConMod sediment and seed capture; (2) connectivity in the form of bare ground cover at the large and small scale correlated with sediment capture but not seed capture; and (3) sediment and seed capture were both influenced by previously implemented restoration treatments, though differentially. When investigating the capture of different seed functional groups and sizes, we found that grass seed capture increased with proximity to shrubs and that smaller seeds were both captured more frequently and more closely correlated to sediment capture. Accurately estimating the volume of woody vegetation is critical for assessing fuel characteristics and associated wildfire risks in shrublands. However, few studies have investigated the branch volume of multi-stemmed shrubs, a dominant life form in wildfire-prone drylands. This study predicts branch volume using the inflection point of branch diameter. This inflection point, identified using the "Segmented" package in R, marks the transition from a gradual decrease to a significant reduction in diameter along the stem. The volume of branch segment above this point is calculated as a cone, and below it, a cylinder. We validated this method on various species such as Caragana korshinskii, Salix psammophila, and Vitex negundo. Good estimations were achieved with an average 19.2% bias relative to reference branch volumes, outperforming conventional methods that subjectively treated the whole branch as either a cylinder (96.9% bias) or a cone (−34.4% bias). We tallied branches by basal diameter and provided inventories for easily locating the inflection point, as well as using two-way branch volume tables for rapid volume predictions in shrubland. In general, we developed an effective method for estimating branch volumes of multi-stemmed shrubs, enabling its application to larger-scale shrubland volumetric prediction. We conducted a phytosociological survey of pioneer shrub and shrub-wood (brushwood) communities on river banks at the contact of gravel bars and rockfall, slope debris or colluvium in the spring area of the Nadiža River, in the gorge of the Soča River between Srpenica and Kobarid (Log Čezsoški and Magozd), in the Tolminka valley, and in certain other locations in the hills of western Slovenia. We identified a successional sequence of two grey willow and hop hornbeam communities, which we classify into the associations Salicetum eleagno-appendiculatae (Salicion eleagno-daphnoidis) and Peucedano verticillari-Ostryetum carpinifoliae (Fraxino orni-Ostryion). Both are indicators of natural river banks that have not been artificially stabilized. We expanded the knowledge of hop hornbeam communities in the pre-Alpine–northern-Dinaric part of Slovenia with a description of a new association Scopolio carniolicae-Ostryetum carpinifoliae. Its sites are characterised by slightly moist soil, and its stands by a higher proportion of species of the alliance Tilio-Acerion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oregon leads the United States in nursery production of shade trees and is third in deciduous and broadleaf evergreen shrub production. Plant-parasitic nematodes have been implicated in problems with the growth of plants in nurseries and are also of phytosanitary risk. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the host status of four trees (Quercus alba, Quercus garryana, Acer campestre, Thuja occidentalis) and two shrubs (Buxus sempervirens, Rhododendron catawbiense) to Meloidogyne incognita, Meloidogyne hapla, and Pratylenchus neglectus. Each plant/nematode treatment was replicated five times, and the experiment was conducted twice. Plants were inoculated with 3,000 eggs of M. incognita or M. hapla and 2,500 individuals of P. neglectus two weeks after planting. After three months, the plants were harvested, and the total density of nematodes in soil and roots for P. neglectus and the total density of second-stage juveniles (J2) in soil and eggs on roots for M. hapla and M. incognita were determined. The final nematode population (Pf) and reproductive factor (RF = Pf/initial population density) were calculated. For M. incognita and M. hapla, all of the ornamental trees and shrubs would be considered as fair to good hosts with RF values > 1. Meloidogyne incognita had the highest Pf (5,234 total J2 and eggs/pot) and RF value (28.4) on A. campestre. For P. neglectus, all of the ornamental trees and shrubs were fair to good hosts, except for B. sempervirens. Buxus sermpervirens was not a host for P. neglectus, with an RF value of almost 0. This is the first report of Q. alba, Q. garryana, and A. campestre as hosts for M. incognita, M. hapla, and P. penetrans. This is also the first report of T. occidentalis and R. catawbiense as hosts for P. penetrans and the non-host status of B. sermpervirens for P. penetrans.

Background. The issue of the use of hydrophilic polymers in forestry in the arid conditions of the Volgograd region has been little studied and remains very relevant. The changing natural and climatic conditions of the region require careful selection of an assortment of tree and shrub species and preparations that improve their growth, development and resistance to environmental factors. Purpose. Study of the influence of polymer materials on the species of hanging birch (Betula pendula Roth.), branched tamarix (Tamarix ramosissima Ledeb.), black poplar (Populus nigra L.) in arid conditions. Materials and methods. The effect of three forms of Hydrosous polyacrylamide (HS) was studied: granular in doses 0, 30, 60, 120, 480, 960, 1920 kg/ha, powdered at a dose of 480 kg /ha, saturated with macro- and micro-fertilizers at a dose of 480 kg/ ha on birch and tamarix with the use of fine-drip irrigation, the distance between the centers of the seed rows are 40 cm . The seeding rate of class 1 seeds was 7 g/1 m of the seeding groove. The experiment also included options with mulching birch crops with sawdust 1-2 mm thick, peat 1-2 mm and straw 2-3 cm. In the variant of the experiment with black poplar, sowing seeds in a hydrogel suspension, sowing seeds in water, sowing seeds with dry hydrogel granules, sowing dry seeds (control) were used. Freshly harvested seeds, stirring periodically, were germinated for 36 hours in a hydrogel suspension and an aqueous medium. 5 kg of hydrogel polymer, 100 kg of peat, 10 m3 of water and 40 kg of seeds were used for the preparation of the hydrogel suspension, 0.5 polymer, 10 g of humus and 4 g of seeds were added per 1 ha or 1 liter of water. Results. According to the results of the experiment, birch seedlings grew and developed better in the variant with the introduction of a granular polymer of 960 kg / ha – the diameter of the root neck was 4.8 mm, when the polymer was applied at a dose of 1600 kg / ha, the first shoots after sowing appeared after 14 days. When taking soil samples in tamarix crops, its moisture content was 25.8% in the experiment variant with a polymer dosage of 1600 kg/ha, the best density was observed in the experiment variant with a polymer dosage of 3200 kg/ha. The size and yield of 2-year-old tamarix seedlings when hydrophilic polymers were introduced into the soil turned out to be better in the experiment variant with a dose of 1600 kg/ha. The black poplar showed the best growth results in the variant of sowing in a suspension of hydrogels, the linear growth of seedlings in height was 9.6 cm. Conclusions. Sowing germinated seeds of black poplar (Populus nigra L.) in a liquid medium in the presence of hydrogels and fertilizers allows to increase seed germination, reduce the time of emergence of mass seedlings, accelerate growth rates, improve the quality of seedlings. Polyacrylamide Hydrosous allows you to increase soil moisture, lower its density, which is important for the arid conditions of the research region. During the growth and development of plants under the influence of Hydrosous, the diameter of the root neck of seedlings increased, the dynamics of growth in height and the dates of the appearance of the first shoots decreased.

Semi‐arid alpine ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau are experiencing rapid climate change and extensive anthropogenic activity, concomitant with the encroachment of shrubs. Shrub encroachment will lead to changes in both the ecosystem structure and functioning of the semi‐arid alpine steppes. Yet, the encroaching impacts of shrubs on the above‐ and belowground ecosystem functioning of the semi‐arid alpine steppes remain uncertain. To quantify shrub encroachment impacts on ecosystem functioning of the semi‐arid alpine steppes, two alpine steppe sites encroached by shrub species are investigated, with one site encroached by leguminous shrub species (Caragana spinifera) and another site encroached by non‐leguminous shrub species (Dasiphora fruticosa). Results shows that the individual ecosystem functions and the ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) of alpine steppes are significantly enhanced following both leguminous and non‐leguminous shrubs encroachment. We conclude that shrub encroachment tends to facilitate the belowground EMF (BEMF) but has neutral effects on the aboveground EMF (AEMF) in alpine steppes. Shrubs are usually adapted to stressful environments in which soil resources are limited, and thus, roots are fundamental for their biological success. However, root measures are challenging to collect, especially in field conditions and at the individual level. For this study, we collected data on the three‐dimensional distribution of fine root biomass of twenty‐three individuals belonging to three shrub species in a mediterranean shrubland in central Spain: gum rockrose Cistus ladanifer, rosemary Salvia rosmarinus, and hairy‐fruited broom Cytisus striatus. Our goal was to determine the soil‐foraging strategies adopted by the plants. We hypothesized that plants would show stabilizing niche differences explaining the high plant biodiversity characteristic of mediterranean shrublands and that they would follow the game theory model's prediction of exploitative segregation of roots behaving territorially but also over‐proliferating roots close to their stem and engaging in a root tragedy of the commons. We found that two‐thirds to three‐fourths of the biomass was belowground, and the system's productivity was roughly 500–600 g C m−2 year−1. Only rosemary plants competed with neighbors following the exploitative segregation predictions. Broom plants had the shallowest and most widespread root systems but significantly reduced their root range toward competing neighbors. Gum rockrose presented deep, narrow root systems avoiding extensive overlap with neighbors but did not appear to respond to competitive pressure levels. The grasslands and shrub areas of the Patagonian steppe are the most frequent habitat for the “Near Threatened” armadillo, known as pichi (Zaedyus pichiy). Dense exotic conifer plantations are replacing the steppe in Argentinean northern Patagonia. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of conifer afforestation on the occurrence and food availability in a Z. pichiy population in north-western Patagonia. Fifteen sites in the native steppe and 50 in exotic pine plantations were sampled. We recorded the number of signs of pichi’s presence and the diversity of invertebrates. Signs of Z. pichiy presence decreased in pine afforestation compared to the native steppe. Additionally, we found a decrease in the abundance, richness, diversity, and biomass of arthropods in pine plantations. Therefore, the presence of pine plantations in the steppe reduces the main food items of Z. pichiy and also eliminates the native steppe vegetation structure that provides preferred places to dig burrows. Background and Aims Intra- and transgenerational plasticity may provide substantial phenotypic variation to cope with environmental change. Since assessing the unique contribution of the maternal environment to the offspring phenotype is challenging in perennial, outcrossing plants, little is known about the evolutionary and ecological implications of transgenerational plasticity and its persistence over the life cycle in these species. We evaluated how intra- and transgenerational plasticity interplay to shape the adaptive responses to drought in two perennial Mediterranean shrubs. Methods We used a novel common garden approach that reduced within-family genetic variation in both the maternal and offspring generations by growing the same maternal individual in two contrasting watering environments, well-watered and drought, in consecutive years. We then assessed phenotypic differences at the reproductive stage between offspring reciprocally grown in the same environments. Key Results Maternal drought had an effect on offspring performance only in Helianthemum squamatum. Offspring of drought-stressed plants showed more inflorescences, less sclerophyllous leaves and higher growth rates in both watering conditions, and heavier seeds under drought, than offspring of well-watered maternal plants. Maternal drought also induced similar plasticity patterns across maternal families, showing a general increase in seed mass in response to offspring drought, a pattern not observed in the offspring of well-watered plants. In contrast, both species expressed immediate adaptive plasticity, and the magnitude of intragenerational plasticity was larger than the transgenerational plastic responses. Conclusions Our results highlight that adaptive effects associated with maternal drought can persist beyond the seedling stage and provide evidence of species-level variation in the expression of transgenerational plasticity. Such differences between co-occurring Mediterranean species in the prevalence of this form of non-genetic inheritance may result in differential vulnerability to climate change. The Mira River basin is considered a socio-ecological mosaic. However, the productive and economic dynamics of the area have been the main activities that have endangered its richness and endemism. This study determines how changes in vegetation cover inflence the potential distribution of Croton wagneri Müll. arg. (Müller, 1872), using Landsat satellite images of the years 2010 and 2018 as inputs in a maximum entropy model (MaxEnt), together with environmental variables. The results obtained show that during the study period there were losses of forest cover (2.26%), shrub vegetation (3.24%), xerophytic vegetation (1.72%) and an increase in crops (3.73%), pastures (1.93%) and urban areas (0.38%). This is how changes in land cover significantly influence the potential distribution of the species, since the areas highly suitabale in the period 2000-2010 occupied 0.80% of the surface area, covering parishes such as San Miguel de Ibarra, Ambuquí, Salinas, San Vicente de Pusir, Juan Montalvo and La Concepción, while in the period (2010-2020) this area reduced to 0.19%. Phenotypic differences among populations stem from the interaction between neutral and adaptive processes, and phenotypic plasticity. Although clinal trait variation along climatic gradients often evolves in widely distributed species, it is unknown whether substrate specialization, such as that of Mediterranean gypsum plants, has constrained adaptation to climate.Using a common garden experiment with two contrasting watering treatments, we quantified phenotypic plasticity, assessed evidence for footprints of selection using FST – QST comparisons, and evaluated the ecological factors driving genetically based phenotypic differentiation of 11 populations encompassing the full environmental range of the gypsum shrub Lepidium subulatum.We found evidence for genetic differentiation among populations related to climatic differences, with populations from warmer and drier sites showing lower specific leaf area and leaf N, earlier phenology, greater water use efficiency and greater fitness. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that this differentiation was driven by past divergent selection rather than neutral processes. All populations showed high phenotypic plasticity, indicating that plasticity has not been selected against, even in populations from sites with harsher climatic conditions.Synthesis. Our results indicate that despite strong substrate specialization, adaptive differentiation related to climatic gradients occurs in this species. However, we also found that populations from mesic sites may be particularly vulnerable to future climate change given their relatively lower fitness under both wet and dry conditions. Mediterranean‐alpine plants are exposed to harsh conditions, forcing them to perform with well‐adapted physiological strategies to withstand the dual stressors that arise from winter cold and summer drought. Such growth strategies are not yet fully understood, although they gain importance with regard to the resilience of species in the face of ongoing climate variability.Here, we aimed at understanding shrub growth in a widespread Mediterranean‐alpine species, Cytisus galianoi Talavera & Gibbs. Using long‐term time series of stem diameter change obtained from dendrometer measurements across the species´ range, we were able to characterise its spatiotemporal growth plasticity. Furthermore, separating water‐related fluctuations in stem diameter from irreversible stem increment allowed us to disentangle the species´ seasonal growth patterns. Using fine‐scale measurements of on‐site environmental conditions, we were then able to identify micro‐ecological drivers controlling the species´ growth processes by applying correlation analysis and partial least squares regressions.We show the species´ adaptation to the spatial heterogeneity across its range for the first time. Our findings highlight that the combination of bimodality and overall high growth plasticity likely allows the species to cover a wide geographical range across alpine areas and over a wide range of weather conditions. We show the environmental control of bimodal growth in C. galianoi, and the importance of pre‐growth environmental control, leading to pronounced carry‐over effects. These lead to a major advantage in resisting adverse growth conditions and adapting to changing conditions.Synthesis: Overall, our findings improve the understanding of the species´ ecological niche and show that preceding photosynthetic activity helps C. galianoi to perform even under unfavourable conditions in winter and during the active growth phase, challenging the general assumption on the coupling of growth to specific seasons and suggesting that the species is capable of adapting to future climate variability. Food security, sustainability of food production, and greenhouse gas (GHG) production of ruminant livestock are topics that generate scrutiny and debates worldwide. In a scenario of increasing human population and concerns with climate change, it is necessary to increase animal-derived food in sustainable operations. Grazing systems are crucial for ruminant production worldwide, and in the tropics, well-managed grasslands can provide sustainable intensification of this activity. In these regions, production often relies on grass monoculture managed extensively, a practice that commonly has led to the occurrence of degraded soils, limited animal productivity, and increased intensity of GHG emissions. Silvopastoralism is a practice that promotes several ecosystem services, showing potential to maintain soil quality while reducing the environmental impacts of ruminant production. These systems also have the potential to improve animal productive performance and reduce GHG emissions. The review was guided by a search in the Web of Science database using population terms and refined by document type (Article) and language (English OR Portuguese) following PRISMA protocol. Infographics were created using the Bibliometrix package in R software (version 4.3.2), and a specific topic on Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray was explored to demonstrate the importance of this forage resource for tropical silvopastoral systems and its potential contribution to food security. The T. diversifolia shrub is widely distributed in Latin America and tropical regions and presents several characteristics that make it a good option for silvopastoral systems. Focusing on the tropics, our objectives were to present one literature review addressing the role of grazing ruminant production towards the current climate change and food security challenges. Additionally, we aimed to explore the state of knowledge on silvopastoral systems and the use of T. diversifolia, presenting their potential to cope with this scenario of increased concerns with the sustainability of human activities. Dendrochronological studies with shrubs from arid ecosystems in South America are of great importance due to the scarcity of ecological information that exists in these environments. This approach allows to evaluate the responses of plant species exposed to climate variability under arid conditions. We developed ring width chronologies and evaluated, for the first time for Argentina, the relationship between radial growth and climatic variables (precipitation, temperature and aridity index) of two shrub species characteristic of arid montane environments, Proustia cuneifolia and Hualania colletioides. The chronology of P. cuneifolia recorded a positive correlation with precipitation (May), temperature (October, July and February), and SPEI (June-October). The chronology of H. colletioides showed negative correlation with the temperature of the months of December and February. The results suggest that variations of the annual ring widths of P. cuneifolia are influenced by regional climate, mainly by aridity, while the growth of H. colletioides could be influenced by factors at the scale of microsite. A more extensive network of chronologies is necessary to explore site-climate variability under conditions of a complex topography such as that found in mountainous areas, suggesting the spatial extension of these records in order to understand in more detail the climatic imprint on the annual growth of these shrubs. Background and aims: Dominant plants shape belowground communities, which in turn influences ecosystem functioning. Similarly, herbivores affect belowground communities through physical disturbance and redistribution of organic inputs, but also through their interactions with plants themselves. However, we know little about how grazing moderates the effects of dominant plants on belowground organisms. Methods: We established a three-year shrub removal experiment in a grazed and an ungrazed alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau to assess how grazing moderates the effects of a dominant plant, Dasiphora fruticosa, on nematode communities. We used piecewise structural equation modelling to assess how grazing moderates the direct effects of dominant plants and, indirect effects via changes in edaphic variables and microbial pathways. Results: We found that 1) grazing significantly decreased nematode diversity mainly due to a reduction in omnivores; 2) there was a significant grazing by shrub interaction effect on nematode diversity, whereby shrub had a positive direct effect on nematode diversity only in the grazed meadow; 3) in the ungrazed alpine meadow, microbial diversity was a strong predictor of nematode, while in the grazed meadow, grazing suppressed the microbial pathways of shrub presence. Conclusion: The study shows that grazing decreases the diversity of soil communities and suppresses the interactions among soil biota, while shrub presence plays a vital role in alleviating the negative effects of grazing on understory communities. Therefore, the findings further highlight herbivory in inducing facilitation of dominant shrubs on understory community stabilization and ecosystem functioning in alpine meadows of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. The nurse effect is a positive interaction in which a nurse plant improves the abiotic environment for another species (beneficiary plant) and facilitates its establishment. The evergreen shrub Vaccinium vitis-idaea (a beneficiary plant) grows mainly under the dwarf shrub Pinus pumila (a nurse plant) in the alpine regions of central Japan. However, whether V. vitis-idaea shrubs under various P. pumila shrubs spread through clonal growth and/or seeds remains unclear. We investigated the clonal structure of V. vitis-idaea under the nurse plant P. pumila in Japanese alpine regions. MIG-seq analysis was conducted to clarify the clonal diversity of V. vitis-idaea in isolated and patchy P. pumila plots on a ridge (PATs), and in a plot covered by dense P. pumila on a slope adjacent to the ridge (MAT) on Mt. Norikura, Japan. We detected 28 multilocus genotypes in 319 ramets of V. vitis-idaea across 11 PATs and MAT. Three genets expanded to more than 10 m in the MAT. Some genets were shared among neighboring PATs or among PATs and MAT. These findings suggest that the clonal growth of V. vitis-idaea plays an important role in the sustainability of populations. The clonal diversity of V. vitis-idaea was positively related with the spatial size of PATs and was higher in MAT than in PATs at a small scale. Therefore, the spatial spread of the nurse plant P. pumila might facilitate the nurse effect on the genetic diversity of beneficiary plants, leading to the sustainability of beneficiary populations. Zieria buxijugum , Z. formosa , and Z. parrisiae are three closely related, Critically Endangered species of questionable taxonomic validity that occur within six kilometres of each other on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. We investigated genetic relationships and diversity of these species, along with two related but taxonomically distinct congeners, Z. granulata and Z. tuberculata , and a possible undescribed taxon, Z. aff. tuberculata. Double-digest restriction-site associated sequencing (ddRADseq) was used to generate anonymous genomic loci that were used for phylogenetic, network, and genetic structure analyses, and for estimating genetic diversity of the threatened species. Our results support the current taxonomic status of Z. buxijugum , Z. formosa , and Z. parrisiae , and suggest that Z. aff. tuberculata warrants recognition as a distinct species. We detected no evidence of inbreeding in the three Critically Endangered species, and found their genetic diversity to be similar to that of the more widespread species Z. granulata and Z. tuberculata. Comparison of plant material held in ex situ collections at the Australian National Botanic Gardens with wild plants highlighted several genotypes of the Critically Endangered species that are not represented in the ex situ collection, and we provide suggestions for the future inclusion of those unrepresented genotypes. Despite being a central aspect of a species' ecology and having important conservation implications, the use of fine‐scale habitat features (microhabitats), and how they vary over time, are poorly known for most species. In this study, we leveraged 522 relocations of radio‐tracked mallee tree dragons (Amphibolurus norrisi) and painted dragons (Ctenophorus pictus) to investigate the effect of environmental and individual variables on microhabitat use. Mallee tree dragons were more likely to use trees on hot days and in the middle of the day (the hottest time of day), whereas shrub use was more likely on cool days and in the mornings. Painted dragons were more likely to use shrubs and grass trees on warmer days and during the middle of the day, whereas burrows were used during cooler days and in the mornings and afternoons. We expect these patterns represent animals moving from refuge resources, occupied during unsuitable thermal conditions, to microhabitats offering basking, foraging and social opportunities during periods of thermal optimum. Additionally, we found evidence of an ontogenetic shift, with larger mallee tree dragons favouring tree use and higher perches, suggesting a transition from shrub to tree use with age. Our findings underscore the need for diverse microhabitats to accommodate the thermoregulatory and ontogenetic requirements of lizards. Premise: The huge diversity of Salix subgenus Chamaetia/Vetrix clade in North America and the lack of phylogenetic resolution within this clade has presented a difficult but fascinating challenge for taxonomists to resolve. Here we tested the existing taxonomic classification with molecular tools. Methods: In this study, 132 samples representing 46 species from 22 described sections of shrub willows from the United States and Canada were analyzed and combined with 67 samples from Eurasia. The ploidy levels of the samples were determined using flow cytometry and nQuire. Sequences were produced using a RAD sequencing approach and subsequently analyzed with ipyrad, then used for phylogenetic reconstructions (RAxML, SplitsTree), dating analyses (BEAST, SNAPPER), and character evolution analyses of 14 selected morphological traits (Mesquite). Results: The RAD sequencing approach allowed the production of a well‐resolved phylogeny of shrub willows. The resulting tree showed an exclusively North American (NA) clade in sister position to a Eurasian clade, which included some North American endemics. The NA clade began to diversify in the Miocene. Polyploid species appeared in each observed clade. Character evolution analyses revealed that adaptive traits such as habit and adaxial nectaries evolved multiple times independently. Conclusions: The diversity in shrub willows was shaped by an evolutionary radiation in North America. Most species were monophyletic, but the existing sectional classification could not be supported by molecular data. Nevertheless, monophyletic lineages share several morphological characters, which might be useful in the revision of the taxonomic classification of shrub willows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Arctic tundra, warming is anticipated to stimulate nutrient release and potentially alleviate plant nutrient limitations. Typically simulated by fertilization experiments that saturate plant nutrient demand, future increases in soil fertility are thought to favor ectomycorrhizal (EcM) over ericaceous shrubs and have often been identified as a key driver of Arctic shrub expansion. However, the projected increases in fertility will likely vary in their alleviation of nutrient limitations. The resulting responses of shrubs and their mycorrhizae across the gradient of nutrient limitation may be nonlinear and could contradict the current predictions of tundra vegetation shifts. We compared the functional responses of two dominant shrubs, EcM dwarf birch (Betula nana) and ericaceous Labrador tea (Rhododendron tomentosum), across a long‐term nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization gradient experiment in Arctic Alaska. Using linear mixed‐effects modeling, we tested the responses of shrub cover, height, and root enzyme activities to soil fertility. We found that B. nana cover and height linearly increased with soil fertility. In contrast, R. tomentosum cover initially increased, but decreased after surpassing the intermediate levels of increased soil fertility. Its height did not change. Enzyme activity did not respond to soil fertility on EcM‐colonized B. nana roots, but sharply declined on R. tomentosum roots. Overall, the nonlinear responses of shrubs to our fertility gradient demonstrate the importance of experiments grounded in replicated regression design. Our results indicate that under moderate increases in soil fertility, Arctic shrub expansion may not only include deciduous EcM shrubs but also ericaceous shrubs. Regardless of shifts aboveground, changes in root enzyme activity belowground point to some EcM shrub species playing a more influential role in tundra soils; as EcM roots remained steady in their liberation of soil organic nutrients with heightened soil fertility, degradative root enzyme activity on the dominant ericaceous shrub dropped—in some instances with even the slightest increase in fertility. This article, titled "Ungulates Mitigate the Effects of Drought and Shrub Encroachment on the Fire Hazard of Mediterranean Oak Woodlands," explores the combined effects of drought and deer browsing on shrub mortality and fire hazard in a Mediterranean oak woodland in Portugal. We assessed the effect of grazing and plant patchiness on the perennial grass seed bank in litter patches in relation to co-occurring shrub, annual grass, and forb seed banks in disturbed rangelands of the Patagonian Monte. We hypothesized that litter patches in disturbed rangelands have a perennial grass seed bank but co-occurring seed banks of annual lifeforms reduce the opportunities for perennial grass reestablishment at these patches. We evaluated the effect of microsite (bare soil vs. vegetated) and grazing (grazed vs, non-grazed) on the (1) size (seeds m−2) of the four seed banks, (2) frequency of microsites with the respective seeds, and (3) frequency of co-occurrence of the perennial grass with shrub, annual grass and forb seed banks in litter patches at 5 dates (2009–2011). We found the smallest perennial grass and annual grass seed banks in litter patches under grazing and in bare soil microsites. The shrub and forb seed banks in litter patches were smaller at vegetated than at bare soil microsites under grazing and the reverse occurred in non-grazed conditions. The sizes of all seed banks were positively related to the frequency of litter patches with the respective seeds. In these litter patches, the size of perennial grass and shrub seed banks did not vary with grazing, and/or microsite while the size of annual grass and forb seed banks decreased with grazing and increased in vegetated microsites. The perennial grass seed bank in litter patches co-occurred mostly with forb and annual grass seed banks (several times larger). This is probably a constraint for the reestablishment of perennial grasses. However, although scarce, litter patches with exclusive perennial grass seed bank or co-occurring perennial grass and shrub seed banks could be an opportunity for perennial grass reestablishment. Fire is a natural component in tropical open ecosystems. Therefore, species are adapted to and thrive in post-fire conditions. In these fire-prone ecosystems smoke is one of the fire products that can stimulate seed germination. Here, we evaluated if and how smoke influences the germination of 44 Cerrado ground layer species, including grasses, forbs, subshrubs, and shrubs. Specifically, we aimed to answer the following questions: (1) How does smoke affect the germination of the Cerrado ground layer species? (2) Does smoke concentration influence the response? (3) Does this response differ according to growth form? (4) Are there differences in response between savanna and wet grassland communities? Considering all species together, smoke did not affect the germination of the study species. However, we found species having positive or negative responses, depending on the smoke concentration. When considering growth forms, grasses had a reduction in mean germination time. Smoke also reduced the mean germination time of savanna species, whereas, for wet grassland species, there was no effect of smoke. Thus, smoke has an asymmetric effect on cue germination in the Cerrado, depending on the species, growth form, and habitat. Herbicides are commonly used in forestry to enhance conifer tree growth by reducing the abundance of competitive, undesired, early successional species. Reducing the abundance of understory species could also lead to changes in community composition that need to be documented to aid the understanding of any downstream ecosystem changes. We examined the effects of glyphosate-based herbicides on the abundance, diversity, and community composition of the understory vegetation community of forests located in the temperate-boreal transition zone. We sampled 37 blocks in two ecoregions of the Acadian Forest in eastern Canada that were harvested over the last 15 years. Species richness, Shannon's diversity, or evenness did not differ among blocks with different herbicide history. However, community composition differed between the non-herbicide and herbicide blocks in both ecoregions. Overall, 26.5% of the plant community variation was explained by the factors herbicide use (10.6%), Biomass Growth Index/site quality (8.6%), time since harvest (3.6%), and ecoregion (1.7%). We found 16 indicator species that differentiated the non-herbicide (9 species) and herbicide blocks (7 species). Indicator species for non-herbicide blocks included two blueberry species, three shrubs (two flowering), and two ferns, whereas indicator species for herbicide blocks were largely perennial forbs. Together, our results indicate that herbicide use does not alter species richness but does reduce shrub abundance, a change that persists throughout the 10 years post-herbicide application captured in our study. The reduced shrub layer likely leads to other changes in the plant community. Herbicide use is associated with subtle changes to the understory plant community, and these changes are missed when only alpha diversity is used to examine the effects of herbicides use on community composition. Biological invasions are one of the most important threats to biodiversity. However, spread mechanisms have been described in detail only for some widespread taxa. Here, we aim to characterize the unique phenomenon of × Sorbaronia ′Mitschurinii′ (Rosaceae) spread into temperate Scots pine forests. We assessed the surroundings of an abandoned × Sorbaronia ′Mitschurinii′ plantation, established in 1986 near Ośno Lubuskie (W Poland). Around the plantation we established 66 study plots in 30 m intervals along eight transects, in a systematic design. Using generalized linear mixed-effects models we analysed how the distance from the propagule source (i.e. abandoned plantation), maximum age of × Sorbaronia shrubs assessed using dendrochronological techniques, and light availability determined the density and biomass of the studied plant. We found that its mean aboveground biomass in the plantation was 7.22 ± 0.66 Mg ha−1, and decreased with distance from the propagule source: 6.83 Mg ha−1 30 m from the abandoned plantation, 1.38 Mg ha−1 at a distance of 90 m, and 0.11 Mg ha−1 at a distance of 180 m, almost disappearing at further distances (but present at the maximum distance of 450 m). The density and aboveground biomass of × Sorbaronia ′Mitschurinii′ increased with increasing maximal age of the studied plant and its light availability. The × Sorbaronia ′Mitschurinii′ plantation acted as a strong propagule source, as it reached a density of 100 ind. 100 m−2 after five years, forming a dense shrub layer, capable of reproducing. We conclude that alien species planted at high density and left with no management control might transform into invasion hotspots under favourable circumstances. Polyspora axillaris (Roxb. ex Ker Gawl.) Sweet 1825, is a shrub or tree that is about 9 meters tall in the Theaceae family, mainly distributed in China and Vietnam, and it is widely used as a green tree species in many regions owing to its rapid growth and good adaptability. It is rich in various beneficial extracts for humans, but there are limited studies on it. In this study, we sequenced and annotated the complete plastome of P. axillaris. The chloroplast genome length of P. axillaris is 156,770 bp, with a total of 132 genes, including 37 tRNA genes, 8 rRNA genes and 87 protein-coding genes. The complete chloroplast genome of P. axillaris contains two Inverted Repeats (IRs) of 26,077 bp, a Large Single-Copy (LSC) region of 86,286 bp and a Small Single-Copy (SSC) region of 18,330 bp. The overall G/C content in the chloroplast is 37.3%. Phylogenetic inference shows that P. axillaris formed a sister relationship with P. hainanensis, along with 10 Theaceae species. Using either brackish or saline water is one of the most critical and serious problem in cultivation of ornamental shrubs in Mediterranean areas. So, an investigation was performed during 2021 and 2022 seasons to reveal the tolerance of Brazilian cherry (Eugenia uniflora L.) transplants to salinity of irrigation water. The applied doses of natural Siwa halite for water salinization were 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 g L-1 under the Egyptian climatic conditions. The results indicated that mean values of survival rate were gradually decreased by increasing the salinity level to be 58.33 and 70.0 % in the seasons, respectively after applying 10.0 g L-1. Similarly, were the mean values of vegetative and root growth parameters, which linearly decreased with increasing applied salinity dose up to 10.0 g L-1, with exception for 2.0 and 4.0 g L-1 ones which significantly improved values of most growth traits in most cases of both seasons. Also, salinized water at 6.0 g L-1 recorded better results compared to the control in some characters either in the first or in the second season. The same trend was observed for the results of leaf chemical composition, with the exception of K, Na, Cl and proline contents, which recorded a progressive increase with the gradual increase in applied salinity level ranged from 2 to 3 folds comparing with the control. The salt resistance index percentages were also improved by both 2.0 and 4.0 g L-1 saline water treatments, but significantly declined afterwards to reach 81.5 and 73.7 % by 10.0 g L-1, showing the high ability of such plant to cope with high salt stress. Accordingly, under conditions of fresh water rarity, it could be recommended irrigation of Brazilian cherry transplants using saline water up to 6.0 g L-1 dose to keep quality and decorative value of such plant. Semiarid Patagonia represents 25% of the rangeland area in Argentina, and sheep overgrazing has degraded about a third of it in the past. In this century, depleted domestic stocks have mostly stabilized, but Guanaco populations have grown. These native camelids share habitat and diets with sheep, but their effect on vegetation is poorly understood and has long been debated. We set up an exclusion experiment in Monte León and Cañadón Vaca, a semiarid shrubland grassland in southern Patagonia, currently grazed only by guanacos. Vegetation baselines were studied in 2016 in twelve plots, and half of them were protected from guanaco grazing. Thirty-six plots were cleared to study revegetation. Vegetation was reassessed in 2021, and changes were evaluated using a paired t -test. Within protected plots, vegetation cover increased, bare soil diminished, and vegetated patches grew in size, but the density of the patch-interpatch arrangement did not change. Biodiversity, measured by richness and the Shannon-Wiener (SW) index, grew significantly. Nutrient recycling increased, as did the Stability and Infiltration Land Function indexes, although these last differences were not significant. Vegetation cover under guanaco grazing also increased, mainly due to the growth of dwarf shrubs, a typical tendency in sheep grazing-induced transitions in the region. Vegetated patches under grazing fragmented, resulting in smaller patches and denser patch structures, while diversity and land function indexes remained unchanged. Young plants established in cleared plots without guanacos showed higher cover density and individual size. These effects are similar to those observed in numerous experimental sheep exclosures. Guanaco grazing may thus prevent restoration and contribute to the generalized land degradation processes that overgrazing has been causing in Patagonia for over a century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Livestock grazing can strongly determine how grasslands function and their role in the carbon cycle. However, how ecosystem carbon exchange responds to grazing and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We measured ecosystem carbon fluxes to explore the changes in carbon exchange and their driving mechanisms under different grazing intensities (CK, control; HG, heavy grazing; LG, light grazing; MG, moderate grazing) based on a 16‐year long‐term grazing experimental platform in a desert steppe. We found that grazing intensity influenced aboveground biomass during the peak growing season, primarily by decreasing shrubs and semi‐shrubs and perennial forbs. Furthermore, grazing decreased net ecosystem carbon exchange by decreasing aboveground biomass, especially the functional group of shrubs and semi‐shrubs. At the same time, we found that belowground biomass and soil ammonium nitrogen were the driving factors of soil respiration in grazed systems. Our study indicates that shrubs and semi‐shrubs are important factors in regulating ecosystem carbon exchange under grazing disturbance in the desert steppe, whereas belowground biomass and soil available nitrogen are important factors regulating soil respiration under grazing disturbance in the desert steppe; this results provide deeper insights for understanding how grazing moderates the relationships between soil nutrients, plant biomass, and ecosystem CO2 exchange, which provide a theoretical basis for further grazing management. As a result of the advocacy of Indigenous communities and increasing evidence of the ecological importance of fire, California has invested in the restoration of intentional burning (the practice of deliberately lighting low-severity fires) in an effort to reduce the occurrence and severity of wildfires. Recognizing the growing need to monitor the impacts of these smaller, low-severity fires, we leveraged Sentinel-2 imagery to reveal important inter- and intra-annual variation in grasslands before and after fires. Specifically, we explored three methodological approaches: (1) the complete time series of the normalized burn ratio (NBR), (2) annual summary metrics (mean, fifth percentile, and amplitude of NBR), and (3) maps depicting spatial patterns in these annual NBR metrics before and after fire. We also used a classification of pre-fire vegetation to stratify these analyses by three dominant vegetation cover types (grasses, shrubs, and trees). We applied these methods to a unique study area in which three adjacent grasslands had diverging fire histories and showed how grassland recovery from a low-severity intentional burn and a high-severity wildfire differed both from each other and from a reference site with no recent fire. On the low-severity intentional burn site, our results showed that the annual NBR metrics recovered to pre-fire values within one year, and that regular intentional burning on the site was promoting greater annual growth of both grass and shrub species, even in the third growing season following a burn. In the case of the high-severity wildfire, our metrics indicated that this grassland had not returned to its pre-fire phenological signals in at least three years after the fire, indicating that it may be undergoing a longer recovery or an ecological shift. These proposed methods address a growing need to study the effects of small, intentional burns in low-biomass ecosystems such as grasslands, which are an essential part of mitigating wildfires. Conservation and management of drylands is a global challenge. Key attributes of these ecosystems, such as dominant vegetation including shrubs, can provide a crucial mechanism to inform conservation strategies. The shrub species Ephedra californica and Larrea tridentata are common native shrub species within the deserts of California and frequently benefit other plant and animal species. Here, we tested the hypothesis that shrubs support reptile and amphibian communities through relative increases in available habitat, estimated through increasing shrub densities at the site level. Reported occurrence data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and high-resolution satellite images were used to test for local-to-regional patterns in reptile and amphibian distribution and diversity by shrub densities at sites. At 43 distinct sites, the relationship between shrub density and reported reptile and amphibian communities was also tested. A total of 71 reptile and amphibian species were reported regionally. Increases in shrub density across sites positively influenced the relative abundance and richness of reptiles and amphibians observed. Moreover, increasing shrub density also had a positive influence on species evenness. Aridity differences between sites did not significantly influence the relationship between shrub density and reptiles and amphibians suggesting that the relationship was robust. This study highlights the importance of foundational shrub species in supporting reptile and amphibian communities in arid and semi-arid regions. Large-scale patterns of biodiversity in deserts can be supported by positive plant-animal interactions including small islands of fertility and resources for animals in the context of a warming climate. One of the largest isotopic datasets of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean region is evaluated, based on plants (n = 410), animals (n = 210) and humans (n = 16) from Tell Tweini (Syria). Diachronic analysis of plant and faunal specimens from four main periods of occupation: Early Bronze Age (2600–2000 BC), Middle Bronze Age (2000–1600 BC), Late Bronze Age (1600–1200 BC) and Iron Age (1200–333 BC) were investigated. Mean Δ13C results from seven plant species reveal emmer and free threshing wheat, olives, bitter vetch, rye grass and barley were adequately or well-watered during all periods of occupation. The grape Δ13C results suggest excellent growing conditions and particular care for its cultivation. The δ15N results indicate that especially the emmer and free threshing wheats received some manure inputs throughout the occupation sequence, while these were likely further increased during the Iron Age, encompassing also the olive groves and grape vineyards. Generally, domestic animals (cattle, sheep, goats) had C3 terrestrial diets and were kept together in similar environments. However, some animals consumed significant amounts of marine or C4 plants, possibly from disturbed habitats due to land use pressure or salt tolerant grasses and shrubs from wetland environments, which were recorded in the direct vicinity of the site. Middle Bronze Age humans consumed a C3 terrestrial diet with no measurable input from C4, freshwater or marine protein sources. Interestingly, the human diet was relatively low in animal protein and appears comparable to what is considered today a typical Mediterranean diet consisting of bread (wheat/barley), olives, grapes, pulses, dairy products and small amounts of meat. The combined isotopic analysis of plants, animals and humans from Tell Tweini represents unbroken links in the food chain which create unparalleled opportunities to enhance our current understanding of environmental conditions, climate change and lifeways in past populations from the Eastern Mediterranean. Vegetation construction is a key process for restoring and rehabilitating degraded ecosystems. However, the spatial pattern and process of native plants colonized by different vegetation restoration methods in semi-arid sandy land are poorly understood. In this study, two artificial vegetation restoration patterns (P1: row belt restoration pattern of Salix matsudana with low coverage; P2: a living sand barrier pattern of Caryopteris mongolica with low coverage) were selected to analyze the spatial distribution pattern and interspecific association of the colonizing native shrubs. The effects of the two restoration models on the spatial patterns of the main native semi-shrubs of the colonies (i.e., Artemisia ordosica and Corethrodendron lignosum var. leave) were studied using single variable and bivariate transformation point pattern analysis based on Ripley's L function. Our results showed that two restoration patterns significantly facilitated the establishment of A. ordosica and C. lignosum var. leave, with their coverage reaching 17.04% and 22.62%, respectively. In P1, the spatial distribution pattern of colonial shrubs tended to be a random distribution, and there was no spatial correlation between the species. In P2, the colonial shrub aggregation distribution was more dominant, and with the increase in scale, the aggregation distribution changed to a random distribution, whereas the interspecific association was negatively correlated. The differences in the spatial distribution patterns of colonized native semi-shrubs in these two restoration patterns could be related to the life form of planted plants, configuration methods, biological characteristics of colonized plants, and intra- and interspecific relationships of plants. Our results demonstrated that the nurse effect of artificially planted vegetation in the early stage of sand ecological restoration effectively facilitated the near-natural succession of communities. Background: Mixed forests are better than monoculture forests in biodiversity, stand structure and productivity stability. However, a more comprehensive assessment of the ecosystem functions of monoculture and mixed plantations is lacking. We compared the single functions and ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) in Fraxinus mandshurica and Larix olgensis mixed plantations with monoculture plantations in Northeast China and discussed the influences of biodiversity and environmental factors on EMF. Results: The mixed plantations had higher biodiversity and ecological functions. Biodiversity was significantly higher in mixed plantations (such as CWMMH, Shrub.Shannon, Shrub.Richness, Herb.Shannon, Herb.Richness), but environmental factors differed less among the three forest types, and below ground diversity differed significantly only in the Bacterial.Shannon and Fungal.Shannon. Mixed plantations showed significant differences in single ecological functions relative to monoculture plantations, with more pronounced differences between mixed plantations and Larix olgensis monoculture plantations. Weighted ecosystem multifunctionality was significantly higher in mixed plantations than in monoculture plantations. EMF was mainly driven by tree diversity, environmental factors, shrub and herb species diversity, and soil microbial alpha diversity, which explained 25.35%, 8.94%, 8.83%, and 7.65% of the variation, respectively. Conclusions: The establishment of mixed plantations can increase the biodiversity of forest stands and improve the ecosystem functions. These results highlight the advantages of multi-species plantations and the necessity of planting them. Diospyros spp. is a tree or shrub species belonging to the family Ebenaceae. Researchers have not extensively conducted studies on the morphological characteristics of Diospyros spp. to examine their diversity or enhance information for taxonomic hierarchy purposes. Diospyros spp. in Indonesia has great potential for in-depth research due to its unique characteristics, particularly in Sulawesi. This research aims to fill the knowledge gap regarding investigating phenotypic variations in Diospyros spp., specifically in the Sulawesi region. Nine species of Diospyros spp. from the Bogor Botanical Gardens collection were observed for their morphological characteristics and described according to their character traits. The results indicate 25 variations in morphological characteristics out of the 50 characters used. These 14 characteristics are key characteristics that influence the grouping of Diospyros spp. from Sulawesi. Phenetic analysis generates three clades of 9 accessions Diospyros spp. analyzed. Between 2020 and 2023, rust fungus specimens were collected from the primary forested regions of the Sanjiangyuan area in Qinghai Province, resulting in over 300 samples. A taxonomic and phylogenetic study of the rust fungi from these forests was conducted using morphological and molecular biological techniques. The investigation identified rust fungi from 7 families, 12 genera, 56 species and varieties, including 10 new host records, 1 new record for China, and 2 novel species. The host plants involved belonged to 26 families, 48 genera, and 78 species. Pucciniaceae and Coleosporiaceae were the dominant families, with the genera Puccinia, Melampsora, and Gymnosporangium being prevalent. The rust fungi in the Sanjiangyuan forests showed a biogeographical affinity with the North Temperate Zone. Floristic comparisons revealed a higher similarity with rust fungi from Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Tibet and a lower similarity with those from Hainan. An analysis of the life forms of rust fungus host plants indicated that herbaceous plants were the most common, followed by shrubs and trees. In different regions of Sanjiangyuan, rust fungi were found as follows: Golog Prefecture with 6 families, 9 genera, and 28 species; Yushu Prefecture with 5 families, 8 genera, and 31 species; Huangnan Prefecture with 5 families, 9 genera, and 26 species; and Hainan Prefecture with 4 families, 5 genera, and 10 species. The families Pucciniaceae, Melampsoraceae, and Coleosporiaceae were common across all four regions.
