Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is the result of a tight and short lingual frenulum which causes difficulty in breast feeding, eating and speech articulation due to limited tongue movement. In this condition, the tip of the tongue cannot be protruded beyond the lower incisor teeth because of a short lingual frenum. In this article, we have reported a 26 year old female patient with tongue-tie who complained of difficult in speech. She underwent frenectomy procedure under local anaesthesis without any complications. This was followed by speech therapy sessions.

El objetivo de este articulo es reportar el caso de anquiloglosia incompleta de un paciente pediatrico de 8 anos de edad, el cual presenta problemas en la articulacion de las palabras. La madre del paciente menciona que el nino recibio terapia de lenguaje en su escuela sin mostrar mejoria, por lo cual lo refirieron para atencion odontologica. Se realizo el diagnostico con exito, donde se confirma la anquiloglosia y se decide realizar frenectomia, se recomienda continuar con la terapia de lenguaje. EnglishAbstract Partial ankyloglossia is defined as a limitation of the possibilities of protrusion and elevation of the tip of the tongue due to a short lingual frenum. The objective of this article is to report the case of incomplete ankyloglossia of a pediatric patient of 8 years of age, which presents problems in the articulation of words. The patient's mother mentions that the child received language therapy at his school without showing improvement, so he was referred for dental care. The diagnosis was made successfully, where the ankyloglossia was confirmed and it was decided to perform frenectomy, it is recommended to continue with the language therapy. Key words: Ankyloglossia, lingual frenulum, frenectomy.

Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenum, which restricts mobility of the tongue. Though ankyloglossia is not a serious condition, it may lead to various problems including infant feeding difficulties, speech disorders, and various mechanical and social issues related to the inability of the tongue to protrude. Hence, management of ankyloglossia should be done irrespective of age, considering the risk benifit evaluation. For many years, the subject of ankyloglossia has been controversial, with practitioners of many specialties having widely different views regarding its significance and management. This case series is about two cases of ankyloglossia subjected to surgical correction by frenectomy procedure. One case was treated with electrocautery and one case with diode laser. Postoperative follow-ups were done for 1 week and 1 month, and healing was compared with the available literature. Manipulation of tissues was better in laser and electrocautery techniques when compared with conventional techniques. This case series indicates that laser and electrocautery treatment used for frenectomy operations provides better patient perception in terms of postoperative pain and function. Considering the above advantages, when used correctly, the laser and electrocautery treatment offers a safe, effective, acceptable, and impressive alternative for lingual frenectomy.

A frenum is a soft tissue attachment of the labial, buccal and lingual mucosa to the jaw bones. Abnormalities in development of this soft tissue fold may present as a very short lingual frenum limiting the mobility of the tongue. This condition is termed as ankyloglossia or tongue tie. The surgical technique is used to reposition the frenum and correct the functional impairments caused by ankyloglossia. This case report presents a 30 years old male patient with impairment of speech due to the short lingual frenum. 980 nm diode laser was used for frenectomy which showed minimal pain and healing with no complications. Surgical procedures like frenectomy and biopsy of oral lesions can be effectively carried out using Diode laser.

O estudo avaliou o conhecimento de profissionais da área de saúde, sobre o diagnóstico e conduta clínica para o tratamento da anquiloglossia em bebês. A amostra (n=84) foi dividida em: G1 (46 médicos da ESF); G2 (13 pediatras); G3 (5 fonoaudiólogas) e G4 (20 dentistas da ESF), que responderam ao questionário (dados pessoais e aplicação do protocolo de avaliação do freio lingual, preconizado por Martinelli et al. (2012)6. Um total de 21 profissionais responderam adequadamente o questionário sendo estes 66,6% do gênero feminino, com idade média de 46,4±12,5 anos de modo que 80,9% já receberam pacientes com queixa de anquiloglossia. Quanto à obrigatoriedade do teste da linguinha constatou-se que o Grupo 1 apresentou menor grau de informação (57,1%) comparado ao Grupo 4 (21,4%), no entanto 57,1% dos profissionais avaliados não o fazem rotineiramente. Referente ao protocolo, nos itens 1, 2 e 3, três profissionais (14,2%) assinalaram figuras com diagnóstico correto (G1 e G3); em relação ao item 4, dez profissionais (47,6%) pontuaram corretamente. Conclui-se que houve grande desconhecimento quanto à obrigatoriedade do teste da linguinha e dificuldade no correto diagnóstico de anquiloglossia em bebês.

Ankyloglossia entails short lingual frenum, impairing satisfactory tongue movement and leading to problems related to deglutition, feeding and diction. This clinical report uses laser technology, rather than traditional surgical procedure with scalpel, to perform a lingual frenulotomy on a 9-year old child diagnosed with ankyloglossia, aiming to investigate more conservative and less traumatic dental procedures. Due to the many advantages of the laser device, such as bloodless surgical field, absence of sutures, minimal swelling and post-surgical pain, the high intensity diode laser is a viable alternative technique in soft tissue surgeries.

Ankyloglossia or tongue tie is a ongoing controversy among professionals as well as speciality groups. It is characterized by short lingual frenum or abnormal attachment of lingual frenum. It causes restricted tongue mobility which in turn causes feeding difficulties and speech problems. Here we present a case report of ankyloglossia in a11 year old male child. 1 . The other category is total ankyloglossia which is rare and occurs when the tongue is completely fused to the floor of the mouth. The incidence of tongue tie varies from 0.2%-5%, with a male child predilection. It also occurs as a clinical feature with syndromes such as Smith- Lemliopitz syndrome, Orofacial digital syndrome, Beckwith Weidman syndrome, Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome and X-linked cleft palate 2 . Ankyloglossia or Tongue tie affects speech, feeding, oral hygiene as well as social environment also. It causes blanching of soft tissue during tongue retrusion and also exerts force on mandibular anteriors 2 . We report a case of partial ankyloglossia in a 11 year old male child which has been treated and followed up without any post operative consequences and recurrence.

An unusually short lingual frenum results in complications in speech, oral hygiene, lingual recession, etc. To have a healthy lifestyle, treatment becomes necessary. Lingual frenectomy is the treatment of choice. With the advent of lasers, the treatment has become simple, precise, and less discomfort compared to the conventional. The present case report deals with the treatment of ankyloglossia using 980 nm diode laser.

Background Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenum. Its prevalence in the newborn population is approximately 4%. Its mode of inheritance has been studied in some articles, but no conclusion has been established. Also, no relevant report has been published in Korea. This study was conducted to elucidate the genetic inheritance of ankyloglossia via pedigree analysis. Methods In this study, 149 patients with no other congenital anomaly who underwent frenuloplasty between March 2001 and March 2010 were studied. Pedigrees were made via pre- or post-operative history taking, and patients with uncertain histories were excluded. In the patient group that showed a hereditary nature, the male-to-female ratio, inheritance rate, and pattern of inheritance were investigated. Results One hundred (67.11%) of the patients were male and 49 (32.89%) were female (male-female ratio=2.04:1). Ninety-one (61.07%) patients reported no other relative with ankyloglossia, and 58 (38.93%) patients had a relative with this disease. The inheritance rate was 20.69% in the 58 cases with a hereditary nature. In the group with no family history of ankyloglossia, the male-female ratio was 3.79:1, which significantly differed from that of the group with a family history of ankyloglossia. X-chromosome mediated inheritance and variation in the gene expression was revealed in the pedigree drawn for the groups with hereditary ankyloglossia. Conclusions Ankyloglossia has a significant hereditary nature. Our data suggest X-linked inheritance. This study with 149 patients, the first in Korea, showed X-linked inheritance in patients with a sole anomaly.
