Background: The inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) refers to the time between one pregnancy and the next. Studies have shown that IPIs shorter than 18 months are linked to negative outcomes, such as preterm delivery, infant mortality, and small-for-gestational-age birth. The aim of this study was to measure the prevalence and risk factors of short inter-pregnancy intervals among women receiving care at primary health centers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods and Material: This is a cross-sectional study conducted at primary health care centers among mothers with a history of giving birth to at least one child and having two successive pregnancies. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire. Statistical analysis was carried out using RStudio (R version 4.3.0). Results: A total of 300 responses were analyzed. The prevalence of short IPI was 36.0%, 31.0% had prolonged IPI, and 33.0% had optimal IPI. Lower educational level, unemployment as a student, low or middle income, a rise in the number of children, typically more than six, and an increase in the number of male offspring, mostly four or more, lack of breastfeeding, and breastfeeding duration have all been identified as statistically significant risk factors for short IPIs. Conclusions: Short inter-pregnancy interval is prevalent in Jeddah city, which can negatively impact the perinatal outcomes. Addressing the risk factors and providing proper education in antenatal and postnatal clinics to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies can help in decreasing the number of short inter-pregnancy intervals and improving maternal and fetal outcomes.

Abstract Background The use of long stems for severe femoral bone defects is suggested by many scholars, but it is associated with further bone loss, intraoperative fracture, increased surgical trauma, and complications. With better bone retention, simple and quick surgical procedures, and minimal complications, the short cementless stems with a tapered rectangular shape may be an alternative for femoral revision. This study aimed to evaluate the results of this type of stem in treating selected Paprosky II–IV bone defects. Methods This retrospective study included 73 patients (76 hips involved) who underwent conservative femoral revision using the short cementless stems with a tapered rectangular shape between January 2012 and December 2020. The preoperative femoral bone defects were identified as follows: 54 cases of type II, 11 cases of type IIIA, 7 cases of type IIIB, and 4 cases of type IV. Indications for revision included aseptic loosening (76.3%) and prosthetic joint infection (23.7%). Six cementless stems with a tapered rectangular shape from three companies were used in all patients. Among them, SLR-Plus, SL-Plus MIA, and Corail stems were employed in most patients (40.8%, 23.7%, and 17.1%, respectively). The average length of these stems measured 171.7 mm (SD 27 mm; 122–215 mm). Radiographic results, Harris hip scores (HHS), complications, and survivorship were analyzed. The follow-up lasted for 7 years on average (range 3–11 years). Results The subsidence was observed in three hips (3.9%), and all stems achieved stable bone ingrowth. Proximal femoral bone restoration in the residual osteolytic area was found in 67 hips (88.2%), constant defects in nine hips (11.8%), and increasing defects in 0 cases. There was no evidence of stem fractures and stem loosening in this series. This paper presents a comprehensive study focused on evaluating the strain generated within short concrete columns reinforced with glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and spirals under concentric compressive axial loads. This research was motivated by the lack of sufficient data in the literature regarding strain in such columns. Five full-scale RC columns were cast and tested, comprising four strengthened with GFRP reinforcement and one reference column reinforced with steel bars and spirals. This study thoroughly examined the influence of various test parameters, such as the reinforcement type, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and spacing of spiral reinforcement, on the strain in concrete, GFRP bars, and spirals. The experimental results showed that GFRP–RC columns exhibited similar strain behavior to steel–RC columns up to 85% of their peak loads. The study also highlighted that the bearing capacity of the columns increased by up to 25% with optimized reinforcement ratios and spiral spacing, while the failure mode transitioned from a ductile to a more brittle nature as the reinforcement ratio increased. Additionally, it is preferable to limit the compressive strain in GFRP bars to less than 20% of their ultimate tensile strain and the strain in GFRP spirals to less than 12% of their ultimate strain to ensure the safe and reliable use of these materials in RC columns. This research also considers the prediction of the axial load capacities using established design standards permitting the use of FRP bars in compressive members, namely ACI 440.11-22, CSA-S806-12, and JSCE-97, and underscores their limitations in accurately predicting GFRP–RC columns' failure capacities. This study proposes an equation to enhance the prediction accuracy for GFRP–RC columns, considering the contributions of concrete, spiral confinement, and the axial stiffness of longitudinal GFRP bars. This equation addresses the shortcomings of existing design standards and provides a more accurate assessment of the axial load capacities for GFRP–RC columns. Conclusion: Conservative femoral revision using short cementless stems with a tapered rectangular shape can provide favorable radiographic outcomes, joint function, and mid-term survivorship with minimal complications. BackgroundTo compare the accuracy of intraoperative wavefront aberrometry using the ORA VLynk system with different biometry-based formulas in short and long eyes after cataract surgery.MethodsThis prospective study considered 48 eyes with axial lengths of 25.0 mm. All eyes were implanted with the monofocal AcrySof IQ IOL, the power being determined using the ORA VLynk. Nevertheless, the favorable outcome of implant therapy hinges on having adequate bone quality and quantity. Individuals with restricted bone height or density pose a unique challenge for implant placement. Short and ultra-short dental implants offer an alternative solution for such patients, as they necessitate less vertical bone height and can mitigate the necessity for supplementary bone augmentation procedures. Aim: This narrative review was conducted to understand the different types of short and ultra-short implants, their indications and contraindications, and their prosthetic considerations, summarizing the current literature on the clinical outcomes, success rates, and potential complications. Methods: Research publications were searched on search engines such as EBSCO, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane library databases, and the articles published from January 1988 to December 2022 with terms such as “short implants, ultra-short implants, atrophic ridge, and alveolar ridge augmentation” were collected. Results: A total of 10 articles were collected, and they were further used to formulate this review. Despite their constraints, short and ultra-short implants have demonstrated comparable clinical results to conventional implants in specific scenarios and provide several advantages, such as reduced surgical time, lower costs, and decreased risk of anatomical complications. Discussion: Short and ultra-short dental implants are used when regular ones are not feasible. They increase stability by enhancing bone contact. They work well for various dental prostheses, especially for those who cannot use removable options. While not recommended for everyone, they can be successful in many cases. Factors such as implant shape, surgical technique, and prosthetic considerations play a key role in their success. Studies show high survival rates for short implants, making them a reliable choice for specific situations. They offer a less invasive and cost-effective alternative in challenging cases. Peri-implant infections, in the absence of adequate treatment, can finally lead to premature loss of the implant. Among targeted protocols recently proposed for the treatment of peri-implant bone defects, and in the case of short implants, reconstructive surgery represents a recommended option. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes, in terms of maintenance, of a reconstructive treatment for peri-implantitis in locking-taper plateau-design single-crown implants, followed for 5 years after surgery. A retrospective evaluation was conducted in 20 patients treated with access flap surgery, concomitant chemical and mechanical surface decontamination, and bone grafting (using a self-hardening mixture of bone substitutes and biphasic calcium sulfate without the use of membranes). Of the 21 implants assessed, 9 were 8 mm-length, and 12 were 6 mm-length. Implant loss and treatment success were, respectively, 0% and 80.95% after 5 years from surgery. All parameters related to bone levels and soft tissue conditions significantly improved after 3 years and remained stable at the 5-year follow-up. The proposed protocol, followed by an effective supporting periodontal therapy, demonstrated the maintenance of the function of all implants, providing adequate stability during the healing process after surgery and limiting the onset of disease recurrence. Abstract Aims The aims were to compare the survival of the cemented standard (150 mm) with the short (DDH [35.5 mm offset or less], number 1 short stem [125 mm options of 37.5 mm, 44 mm, 50 mm offset] and revision [44/00/125]) Exeter ® V40 femoral stems when used for primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). Methods Patients were retrospectively identified from an arthroplasty database. A total of 664 short stem Exeter ® variants were identified, of which 229 were DDH stems, 208 number 1 stems and 227 revision stems were implanted between 2011 and 2020. A control group of 698 standard Exeter ® stems used for THA was set up, and were followed up for a minimum of 10 years follow-up (implanted 2011). All-cause survival was assessed for THA and for the stem only. Adjusted analysis was undertaken for age, sex and ASA grade. Results The median survival time for the short stems varied according to design: DDH had a survival time of 6.7 years, number 1 stems 4.1 years, and revision stems 7.2 years. Subjects in the short stem group (n = 664) were significantly younger (mean difference 5.1, P < 0.001) and were more likely to be female (odds ratio 1.89, 95% CI 1.50 to 2.39, P < 0.001), compared to the standard group. There were no differences in THA (P = 0.26) or stem (P = 0.35) survival at 5 years (adjusted THA: 98.3% vs. 97.2%; stem 98.7% vs. 97.8%) or 10 years (adjusted THA 97.0% vs. 96.0 %; stem 96.7% vs. 96.2%) between standard and short stem groups, respectively. At 5 years no differences were found in THA (DDH: 96.7%, number 1 97.5%, revision 97.3%, standard 98.6%) or stem (DDH: 97.6%, number 1 99.0%, revision 97.3%, standard 98.2%) survival between/among the different short stems or when compared to the standard group. Conclusion The Exeter ® short stems offer equivocal survival when compared to the standard stem at 5- to 10-year follow-up, which does not seem to be influenced by the short stem design.

Background: Recent studies have revealed that the utilization of shorter dental implants generally represents the optimal approach for addressing the majority of instances involving bone loss in the posterior region of the oral cavity. Short implants have superior performance and exhibit a reduced incidence of complications compared to lengthier implants.Aim of the work: The aim of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of smaller dental implants and standard dental implants specifically employed in the posterior region of the oral cavity. Patients and Methods: A research study was conducted at an affiliated dental clinic, focusing on adult patients. The study utilized Biomimetic Ocean implants with internal hex connections manufactured by Avinent Implant System, Spain. Two sizes of implants were used, regular implants measuring 10 mm and short implants measuring 7 mm. The sample size was 60 Patients. A total of 29 standard implants and 17 short implants were put. The methods involved comprehensive ethical considerations, obtaining informed consent from participants, and thorough examinations at multiple time points. Surgical and prosthetic procedures were performed, and clinical examinations, radiographic measurements, and stability assessments were conducted. Statistical analysis was employed to analyze the collected data.Results: The results indicate that all of the implants in both groups were effective. Following the surgical procedure, it was observed that the Standard Implants Group exhibited a comparatively higher mean initial stability quotient [ISQ] score of 77.1 ± 65, whereas the Short Implants Group displayed a mean ISQ score of 71.7 ± 81. This discrepancy in ISQ values between the two groups during the visit is noteworthy. Both groups had comparable mean ISQ values during the subsequent surgical procedure.Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that shorter implants demonstrate comparable efficacy and stability to lengthier implants in those experiencing jawbone loss.

Abstract Introduction Conventional polyethylene (PE) wear has been reported to be associated with femoral offset reconstruction and cup orientation after THA. Thus, the present study aimed (1) to determine the polyethylene wear rate of 32 mm ceramic heads with highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) inlays up to 10 years postoperatively and (2) to identify patient and surgery-related factors affecting the wear rate. Methods A prospective cohort study was performed, investigating 101 patients with 101 cementless THAs and ceramic (32 mm) on HXLPE bearings after 6–24 months, 2–5 years and 5–10 years postoperatively. The linear wear rate was determined using a validated software (PolyWare®, Rev 8, Draftware Inc, North Webster, IN, USA) by two reviewers, blinded to each other. A linear regression model was used to identify patient and surgery-related factors on HXLPE -wear. Results After an initial bedding-in phase of 1 year after surgery, the mean linear wear rate was 0.059 ± 0.031 mm/y at ten years (mean 7.7 years; SD 0.6 years, range 6–10), being below the osteolysis relevant threshold of 0.1 mm/year. The regression analysis demonstrated that age at surgery, BMI, cup inclination or anteversion and the UCLA score were not associated with the linear HXLPE-wear rate. Only increased femoral offset showed a significant correlation with an increased HXLPE-wear rate (correlation coefficient of 0.303; p = 0.003) with a moderate clinical effect size (Cohen’s f²=0.11). Conclusion In contrast to conventional PE inlays, hip arthroplasty surgeons may be less concerned about osteolysis-related wear of the HXLPE if the femoral offset is slightly increased. This allows focusing on joint anatomy reconstruction, hip stability and leg length.

The primary aim was to assess whether a short (125 millimeter (mm)) stem offered an equivalent hip-specific function compared to the standard (150 mm) stem when used for cemented total hip arthroplasty. Secondary aims were to evaluate health-related quality of life, patient satisfaction, stem height and alignment, as well as radiographic loosenings and complications between the two stems. A prospective twin-center double-blind randomized control trial was conducted. During a 15-month period, 220 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were randomized to either a standard (n = 110) or a short (n = 110) stem. There were no significant (P ≥.065) differences in preoperative variables between the groups. Functional outcomes and radiographic assessment were undertaken at a mean of 1 and 2 years. There were no differences (P =.428) in hip-specific function according to the mean Oxford hip scores at 1 year (primary endpoint) or at 2 years (P =.622) between the groups. The short stem group had greater varus angulation (0.9 degrees, P =.003) when compared to the standard group and were more likely (odds ratio 2.42, P =.002) to have varus stem alignment beyond one standard deviation from the mean. There were no significant (P ≥.083) differences in the forgotten joint scores, EuroQol-5-Dimension, EuroQol-visual analogue scale, short form 12, patient satisfaction, complications, stem height, or radiolucent zones at 1 or 2 years between the groups. The cemented short stem used in this study had equivalent hip-specific function, health-related quality of life, and patient satisfaction when compared to the standard stem at mean 2 years post operation. Purpose: Short dental implants serve as a valuable alternative for patients with limited bone height. Immediate or early provisionalization facilitates a more physiologic environment for the gingival tissues to be modeled. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to systematically review and evaluate the implant survival and marginal bone loss with immediate and early loading protocols of short dental implants (≤ 6 mm). Materials and Methods: A literature search (electronic and manual) was conducted to identify studies with a focused PICO question: "In patients with short dental implants, does loading time affect treatment outcomes?" Studies using an immediate or early loading protocol for restoration of short implants with a mean follow-up of at least 1 year, and refraining from the use of advanced surgical procedures (sinus floor elevation, bone augmentation), were included. After evaluating patient selection and outcome reporting biases, a meta-analysis was conducted to assess implant survival and bone loss for studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Bone loss differences between immediate and early loading protocols were evaluated by Student t test, and Spearman correlation analysis was used to analyze the trends between crown-to-implant (C/I) ratio and bone loss. Results: A total of 396 studies with patients receiving short implants (≤ 6 mm) with immediate or early prosthetic loading protocols were identified. For the 7 included studies, the pooled implant survival rate for 322 implants with a follow-up ranging from 1 to 10 years (5 years) was 91.63% (95% CI: 88% to 94%), with a mean bone loss effect estimate of 0.52 ± 0.1 mm (z = 3.07, P < .002). The differences observed in the mean bone loss for studies using immediate loading as opposed to early loading were not statistically significant. A moderate but significant positive correlation was observed between the C/I ratio and mean bone loss levels (r = 0.67, P = .02). Conclusion: Short implants with immediate or early loading protocols have satisfactory long-term treatment prospects with satisfactory implant survival rates and minimal bone loss. Abstract Background Short Birth Interval negatively affects the health of both mothers and children in developing countries. Studies conducted in Ethiopia on the spatial variation and determinants of individual and community-level factors about short birth intervals were limited. Thus, this study was intended to assess the spatial variation of the short birth interval and its determinants in Ethiopia. Methods This study is a secondary analysis of the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (mini EDHS 2019). A total of 1784 reproductive-age women were included in the analysis. The global spatial autocorrelation (Global Moran’s I) and the Getis-Ord statistics tool were used to detect the presence of clustering and the high/low hotspot areas of SBI respectively. Ordinary kriging was used to interpolate short birth intervals, and spatial scan statistics were employed to identify spatial clusters with high and low SBI. A multilevel multivariable model was used to identify predictors of a short birth interval. Results The prevalence of SBI was 62.89% (95%CI: 59.3, 69.7) in Ethiopia. High clustering of SBI was observed in all parts of Somali, in Afar (zones 1, 3, 4, &5), Oromia (Guje, Bale, & West Harerge), and northern Tigray. The most likely significant primary cluster was observed in the Somali region. Women who lived in the primary cluster were 24% more likely to have a short birth interval than those who lived outside the window. In the multilevel mixed-effect analysis age 25–34 [(AOR = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.35, 0.45)], 35–49 [(AOR = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.38, 0.51)], Muslim religion follower [(AOR = 3.5, 95% CI: 2.7, 4.69)], no formal education [(AOR = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.37, 0.70)], primary education[(AOR = 0.4, 95%CI: 0.28, 0.53)], and secondary education [(AOR = 0.3, 95% CI: 0.24, 0.48)], middle [(AOR: 1.3, 95% CI: 1.2, 1.52)], rich wealth status [(AOR: 1.4, 95% CI: 1.3, 1.68)], female sex children [(AOR: 1.2, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.42)], and two or fewer ideal number of children [(AOR = 0.2, 95% CI: 0.25, 0.32)] were found to be significant predictors of SBI. Conclusion Overall, SBI was high and significantly clustered across the region of Ethiopia. Age, religion, education, wealth status, the sex of the indexed child, and the ideal number of children were found to be significantly associated with short birth intervals. Hence, the government should design a health promotion strategy and public health awareness in the identified hotspot areas of SBI and should scale up family planning and the wealth status of reproductive-age women.

Introduction: Conventional polyethylene (PE) wear has been reported to be associated with femoral offset reconstruction and cup orientation after THA. Thus, the present study aimed (1) to determine the polyethylene wear rate of 32 mm ceramic heads with highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) inlays up to 10 years postoperatively and (2) to identify patient and surgery-related factors affecting the wear rate. Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed, investigating 101 patients with 101 cementless THAs and ceramic (32 mm) on HXLPE bearings after 6–24 months, 2–5 years and 5–10 years postoperatively. The linear wear rate was determined using a validated software (PolyWare®, Rev 8, Draftware Inc, North Webster, IN, USA) by two reviewers, blinded to each other. A linear regression model was used to identify patient and surgery-related factors on HXLPE -wear. Results: After an initial bedding-in phase of 1 year after surgery, the mean linear wear rate was 0.059 ± 0.031 mm/y at ten years (mean 7.7 years; SD 0.6 years, range 6–10), being below the osteolysis relevant threshold of 0.1 mm/year. The regression analysis demonstrated that age at surgery, BMI, cup inclination or anteversion and the UCLA score were not associated with the linear HXLPE-wear rate. Only increased femoral offset showed a significant correlation with an increased HXLPE-wear rate (correlation coefficient of 0.303; p = 0.003) with a moderate clinical effect size (Cohen's f²=0.11). Conclusion: In contrast to conventional PE inlays, hip arthroplasty surgeons may be less concerned about osteolysis-related wear of the HXLPE if the femoral offset is slightly increased. Abstract Background The endoprosthetic knee reconstruction using a current universal femoral stem might not be suitable for local population due to the anatomical difference between Chinese and Western populations. We measured the anatomical parameters of Chinese femurs as reference for stem design, and proposed a cementless, curved, short endoprosthesis stem for the reconstruction of distal femur. This study analyzed the biomechanical performance of the newly designed stem aimed at the identification of better operative strategy. Methods The CT–scanning data of femurs derived from 96 healthy Chinese volunteers were imported into the Mimics software, and a segmental measurement strategy was applied to evaluate the radius of curvature (ROC) of the femoral medullary cavity. Then, 4 kinds of endoprosthetic replacement models were created based on the measurement results. Model A: the distal tumor resected femora + straight stem A; Model B: the distal tumor resected femora + curved stem B; Model C: the distal tumor resected femora + curved stem C; Model D: the distal tumor resected femora + curved stem D. Finally, the mechanical difference among these models were compared by finite element analysis. Results The mean femoral ROC of Segment1, 2, 3, 4, 5 measured in the present study was 724.5 mm, 747.5 mm, 1016.5 mm, 1286.5 mm, and 1128 mm, respectively. Based on the femoral ROC of Segment2, the stem ROC of the curved stem B, C, and D was designed as 475 mm, 700 mm, and 1300 mm, respectively. Generally, all endoprosthetic replacement models showed a normal–like stress distribution on the femurs. However, compared to the straight stem, the biomimetic curved stem showed better biomechanical performance both in terms of reducing the extent of the stress shielding of the femur and in terms of minimizing the stress distribution of the implant. Conclusions The uncemented, curved, short stem with suitable ROC can perfectly match the Chinese femoral canal morphology which has better mechanical properties than the conventional femoral stem. Thus, this newly designed femoral stem might be an optimized method for treatment of malignant femoral tumours in the Chinese populations in the case that the numerical results are supported by future experimental studies.

Background: Short Birth Interval negatively affects the health of both mothers and children in developing countries. Studies conducted in Ethiopia on the spatial variation and determinants of individual and community-level factors about short birth intervals were limited. Thus, this study was intended to assess the spatial variation of the short birth interval and its determinants in Ethiopia. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (mini EDHS 2019). A total of 1784 reproductive-age women were included in the analysis. The global spatial autocorrelation (Global Moran's I) and the Getis-Ord statistics tool were used to detect the presence of clustering and the high/low hotspot areas of SBI respectively. Ordinary kriging was used to interpolate short birth intervals, and spatial scan statistics were employed to identify spatial clusters with high and low SBI. A multilevel multivariable model was used to identify predictors of a short birth interval. Results: The prevalence of SBI was 62.89% (95%CI: 59.3, 69.7) in Ethiopia. High clustering of SBI was observed in all parts of Somali, in Afar (zones 1, 3, 4, &5), Oromia (Guje, Bale, & West Harerge), and northern Tigray. The most likely significant primary cluster was observed in the Somali region. Women who lived in the primary cluster were 24% more likely to have a short birth interval than those who lived outside the window. Background: Diabetes mellitus is a major global health burden associated with high morbidity and mortality. Although a short adult body height has been associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), there are large inconsistencies between the studies. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between body height and T2D in a large cohort of adult outpatients in Germany. Methods: A total of 783,029 adult outpatients with available body height data from the Disease Analyzer (IQVIA) database were included in Germany between 2010 and 2020. The incidence of diabetes mellitus (type 1 and type 2) was evaluated as a function of the patients' body height stratified by age, sex, and body-mass-index (BMI). Results: In both women and men in all age groups, incidence of T2D decreased with the increasing body height (<50, 51–60, 61–70, and >70 years). There was no association between the body height and the individual HbA1c value. In multivariable Cox regression analyses adjusted for patient age and BMI, hazard ratios for the development of T2D were 1.15 (95% CI: 1.13–1.17) for each 10 cm decrease in body height in women and 1.10 (95% CI: 1.09–1.12) in men. No significant association was found between body height and the development of T1D. Conclusions: We present the first data from a large cohort of outpatients in Germany, providing strong evidence for an association between adult body height and T2D. These data add to the current literature and might help in implementing body height into existing diabetes risk stratification tools to further reduce morbidity and mortality worldwide. Background: Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) is an important healthcare burden. We examined persistent symptoms in COVID-19 patients at least four weeks after the onset of infection, participants’ return to pre-COVID-19 health status and associated risk factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted (December 2020 to January 2021). A validated online questionnaire was sent to randomly selected individuals aged more than 14 years from a total of 1397,386 people confirmed to have COVID-19 at least 4 weeks prior to the start of this survey. This sample was drawn from the Saudi ministry of health COVID-19 testing registry system. Results: Out of the 9507 COVID-19 patients who responded to the survey, 5946 (62.5%) of them adequately completed it. 2895 patients (48.7%) were aged 35–44 years, 64.4% were males, and 91.5% were Middle Eastern or North African. 79.4% experienced unresolved symptoms for at least 4 weeks after the disease onset. 9.3% were hospitalized with 42.7% visiting healthcare facility after discharge and 14.3% requiring readmission. The rates of main reported persistent symptoms in descending order were fatigue 53.5%, muscle and body ache 38.2%, loss of smell 35.0%, joint pain 30.5%, and loss of taste 29.1%. There was moderate correlation between the number of symptoms at the onset and post-four weeks of COVID-19 infection. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the dependence of the distributions of average integral hydraulic resistances and convective heat transfer in turbulent flow in pipes with small (short channel) and large (long channel) sequences of semicircular periodic protrusions based on numerical solutions of the Reynolds equation systems, closed using Menter's shear stress transfer models, and energy equations on a multi-scale intersecting structured grid.Method. The calculation technique based on finite volume solutions of the Reynolds equation, closed using the Menter shear stress transfer model and the energy equation on a multi-scale intersecting structured grid, made it possible, with acceptable errors, to calculate the average coefficients of hydraulic resistance and heat transfer in a pipe with different quantities annular semicircular ledges.Result. Analytical comparisons were made of the calculated ratios for relative heat transfer and hydraulic resistance on the number of protrusions in channels with different values of relative heights of turbulators h/D, relative steps between turbulators t/D, different values of the Reynolds criteria Re, with other equivalent parameters, which showed that in in which case the qualitative deviations of the above characteristics are carried out monotonously, and in which case they are accompanied by extrema or inflections, and also showed cases of qualitative changes in the calculated characteristics. With the transition from 30 protrusions to 50, as a rule, only quantitative differences occur for the relative parameters of hydraulic resistance and heat transfer, and their qualitative changes are insignificant; with a further transition from 50 protrusions to 100, their quantitative changes also become insignificant.Conclusion. The nature of the patterns of distributions of the mean integral characteristics of flows and heat transfer for a channel with protrusions of various numbers must be taken into account for a short channel. An analysis of the calculated information obtained showed that when moving from a short channel with turbulators to a long one, most often, there is an increase in relative heat transfer and a decrease in relative hydraulic resistance, which justifies the advantage, from the point of view of intensification, of heat transfer by turbulence of the flow of the last channels in relation to the first channels.

Background: Short implants are proposed as a less invasive alternative with fewer complications than standard implants in combination with sinus lift. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to state the efficacy of placing short implants (≤ 6 mm) compared to standard-length implants (≥ 8 mm) performing sinus lift techniques in patients with edentulous posterior atrophic jaws. Efficacy will be evaluated through analyzing implant survival (IS) and maintenance of peri-implant bone (MBL). Methods: Screening process was done using the National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE by PubMed), EMBASE, the Cochrane Oral Health, and Web of Science (WOS). The articles included were randomized controlled trials. Risk of bias was evaluated according to The Cochrane Collaboration's tool. Weighted means were calculated. Heterogeneity was determined using Higgins (I2). A random-effects model was applied. Secondary outcomes such as surgical time, patient satisfaction, mucositis and peri-implantitis, pain, and swelling were analyzed. Results: Fourteen studies (597 patients and 901 implants) were evaluated. IS was 1.02 risk ratio, ranging from 1.00 to 1.05 (CI 95%) (p = 0.09), suggesting that IS was similar when both techniques were used. MBL was higher in patients with standard-length implants plus sinus lift elevation (p = 0.03). MBL was 0.11 (0.01–0.20) mm (p = 0.03) and 0.23 (0.07–0.39) mm (p = 0.005) before and after 1 year of follow-up, respectively, indicating that the marginal bone loss is greater for standard-length implants. Discussion: Within the limitations of the present study, as relatively small sample size, short dental implants can be used as an alternative to standard-length implants plus sinus elevation in cases of atrophic posterior maxilla. Higher MBL was observed in the groups where standard-length implants were used, but implant survival was similar in both groups. Moreover, with short implants, it was observed a reduced postoperative discomfort, minimal invasiveness, shorter treatment time, and reduced costs. Clinical Clinical relevance: The low MBL promoted by short implants does contribute to a paradigm shift from sinus grafting with long implants to short implants. The corpus callosum (CC) is the largest commissure connecting the cerebral hemispheres. Its components are recognized sonographically at 18–20 GW and from that point forward, its growth can be assessed using nomograms for CC length and thickness according to gestational week. Prenatal diagnosis of agenesis of the CC has been reported comprehensively. On the contrary, information regarding findings as short or thick CC is very rare. Background: Short and ultra‐short implants implants supporting single crowns seem to demonstrate high percentages of survival and stable marginal bone levels at a mid‐term follow‐up. Nevertheless, insurgence of peri‐implant complications still represents a critical issue, especially for patients with history of periodontitis. Purpose: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate implant survival, marginal bone loss and peri‐implant complications in 333 short and ultra‐short implants, placed in periodontally healthy patients and patients with a history of periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Implants were placed in the maxillary and mandibular posterior regions of 142 patients with (PP) and without (NPP) a history of periodontitis. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed at 5‐year recall appointments. Results: Implants respectively placed in PP and NPP were: 35.68% and 42.50% in 8.0 mm‐length group, 33.33% and 36.67% in 6.0 mm‐length group, and 30.99% and 20.83% in 5.0 mm‐length group. Implant‐based survival after 5 years of follow‐up was 95.77% for PP and 96.67% for NPP (p = 0.77). Regarding crestal bone level variations, average crestal bone loss was statistically different (p = 0.04) among PP (0.74 mm) and NPP (0.61 mm). Implants presenting signs of mucositis were 6.86% in PP and 7.76% in NPP (p = 0.76). Setting the threshold for excessive bone loss at 1 mm after 60 months, peri‐implantitis prevalence was 7.84% in PP and 2.59% in NPP (p = 0.08). Overall implant success was 92.16% and 97.41%, respectively, for PP and NPP. Conclusions: Under strict maintenance program, five‐year outcomes suggest that short and ultra‐short locking‐taper implants can be successfully restored with single crowns in the posterior jaws both in PP and NPP. ObjectiveThis study aims to identify the risk factors associated with short stature in children born small for gestational age (SGA) at full-term.MethodsThis was a retrospective study. The subjects were full-term SGA infants who were followed up until the age of 2 years. The risk factors for short stature were identified with univariate and multivariate analyses.ResultsOf 456 full-term SGA children enrolled in this study, 28 cases had short stature at 2 years of age. A significant decrease in placental perfusion was found in the short children group with intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) technology, which was an advanced bi-exponential diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) model of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (p = 0.012). Compared to non-short children born SGA at full-term, the short children group underwent an incomplete catch-up growth. Mothers who suffered from systemic lupus erythematosus were more likely to have a short child born SGA (p = 0.023). The morbidity of giant placental chorioangioma was higher in the short children group. The pulsatility index (PI), resistivity index (RI), and systolic-diastolic (S/D) ratio of umbilical artery were higher in the short children group than in the non-short control group (p = 0.042, 0.041, and 0.043). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that decrease of perfusion fraction (fp) in IVIM of placental MRI, chromosomal abnormalities, short parental height, and absence of catch-up growth were associated with a higher risk of short stature in children born SGA at full-term.ConclusionRisk factors for short stature in full-term SGA children at 2 years of age included a decrease of perfusion fraction fp in IVIM of placental MRI, chromosomal abnormalities, and short parental height.

Nineteen patients presented with an unsightly deformity of the shoulder, pain or discomfort at the medial scapular border, pseudo nonparalytic scapular winging, and thoracic outlet symptoms after excessive resection of the clavicle for either complete acromioclavicular separation or displaced fracture of the outer clavicle, which allows the scapula and shoulder to rotate anteriorly and inferiorly on the chest creating traction on the medial scapular muscles and the brachial plexus resulting in pseudo nonparalytic winging and thoracic outlet symptoms. All underwent transfer of the coracoid process with the attached conjoined tendon to the end of the clavicle, restoring length and alignment. Eighteen patients were evaluated at a mean of 13.3 years. Seventeen had resolution of symptoms, restored alignment of the clavicle with the shoulder, improved appearance, healed transfer, and were pleased with the outcome. One patient was lost to follow-up but was considered a failure at his last visit. In a second patient, the transfer healed in a tilted position and the patient was dissatisfied with the appearance but otherwise had resolution of his symptoms. The mean American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Outcome Score improved from 53.2 preoperatively to 87.4 postoperatively (P <.02). This is the first report of using this transfer to restore length and alignment of an excessively short, unstable clavicle. Background: Spinal trauma may result in spinal cord injury (TSCI), an injury to the spinal column resulting in severe compromise to neurologic structures, resulting in possible paralysis, sensory loss, bladder or bowel dysfunction, and mortality. Short-segment pedicle screw fixation (SSPF) is one of the most standard surgical approaches in treatment of TBFs. Long posterior fixation with pedicle screws and rods two-levels above and below the fracture level provide better fixation; however, it results in potentially extraneous instrumentation and increased load on the lower discs. Hence; under the light of above mentioned data, the present study was undertaken for assessing and comparing the efficacy of short segment, compared to long segment instrumentation in thoracolumbar vertebral fractures. Materials & methods: A total of 20 patients were enrolled which who were scheduled to undergo spinal instrumentation in pathological and traumatic vertebral fractures. Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups of 10 each as follow: Short segment treatment group and Long segment treatment group. Follow-up was done and assessment was based on following variables: Visual Analogue Scale and Oswestry Disability Index. All the results were recorded in Microsoft excel sheet and were analyzed by SPSS software. Results: Mean ODI index was significantly lower among patients of the short segment group at 12th month postoperative follow-up in comparison to long segment group. Mean VAS was significantly lower among patients of the short segment group at 12th month postoperative follow-up in comparison to long segment group. Non-significant results were obtained while comparing complications among patients of the two study group. Background: Short and ultra‐short implants represent a predictable treatment, in terms of implant survival, with patients presenting insufficient available bone volumes. Moreover, single crown restorations represent a gold standard in terms of oral hygiene. Purpose: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate implant survival, marginal bone loss, and peri‐implant complications in 333 locking‐taper short and ultra‐short implants. Materials and Methods: Implants were placed in the maxillary and mandibular posterior regions of 142 patients. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed at 5‐year recall appointments. Results: All implants placed consisted of 8.0‐, 6.0‐, and 5.0‐mm length, 38.14%, 34.53%, and 27.33%, respectively. Three hundred thirty‐two implants (one early failure) were rehabilitated with single crowns in 141 patients. In 45.48% of the implants the crown‐to‐implant ratio was ≥2, with a mean value of 1.94. Overall implant‐based survival after 5 years of follow‐up was 96.10%: 96.85%, 95.65%, and 95.60% for 8.0‐, 6.0‐, and 5.0‐mm length implants, respectively (p = 0.82). Overall patient‐based survival was 91.55%. Regarding crestal bone level variations, average crestal bone loss and apical shift of the "first bone‐to‐implant contact point" position were 0.69 and 0.01 mm, respectively. Setting the threshold for excessive bone loss at 1 mm, during the time interval from loading to follow‐up, 28 implants experienced loss of supporting bone greater than 1 mm: 19 of them (67.85%) were surgically treated with a codified surgical regenerative protocol. After 60 months, a peri‐implantitis prevalence of 5.94% was reported, with an overall implant success of 94.06%: 95.93%, 92.73%, and 93.10% for 8.0‐, 6.0‐, and 5.0‐mm length implants, respectively (p = 0.55). Conclusion: Long‐term outcomes suggest that short and ultra‐short locking‐taper implants can be successfully restored with single crowns in the posterior area of the maxilla and mandible. The use of extensive questionnaires has the limitation of filling time bias, related to the ability to focus and accurately respond to many items, justifying the necessity for a brief version. This study aimed to build a brief version of the Caffeine Expectancy Questionnaire in Brazil (B-CaffEQ-BR) composed of 21 items divided into seven factors, with as adequate consistency and reproducibility as the full version. The paper examines adjectives denoting horizontal and vertical size (‘long’ and ‘short’) in the Buryat language and Russian-Buryat dictionaries. The analysis shows that adjectives to define objects in horizontal orientation are fewer than those dealing with vertical orientation. At the same time, adjectives of vertical orientation (oodon and ohor) are distinguished by exclusive compatibility characteristics. The adjective oodon characterizes objects hanging down, such as tails, lower hems, bottom edges of trousers, shoulder weapons, etc.; and the word ohor defines vertical, upwardsdirected objects, e.g., grass, rocks, etc. The dominant adjectives in synonymic chains of both orientations coincide and serve as general definitions of certain qualities or characteristics of an object (uta and bogony). For deeper understanding of peculiarities inherent to these adjectives, the paper examines no pictorial, stylistically loaded adjectives since those are often essentially evaluative and do not act as object definers directly; the single exception examined being the somewhat evaluative adjective unzhagar ‘long’ containing semes of both horizontal and vertical orientations. It defines objects stretched in perspective, as well as ones that hang down or face upwards. As for the analyzed adjectives, in both the synonymic chains the adjectives bogony and oodon ‘short’ are not used in a figurative sense, while uta and ohor are active enough in this function. This fact, apparently, attests to that those are basically used in their direct, utilitarian function ― determination of physical parameters of an object used in practice and economic activities. So, a different story is that of the word ohor which, when combined with ukhaan, bodol, naγan, express figurative meanings (ohor ukhaan ‘dull mind’, ohor γanaan ‘short-sighted’, ohor naγan ‘short life / short century’). Some of these adjectives are used to form compound nouns and adjectives, e.g., uta honshoor ‘bittern’, ohor γüül ‘tailbone’, oodon buu ‘carbine’, oodon terge ‘uniaxial cart’, oodon ümden ‘shorts’, etc. Distinction between Buryat (and other Mongolic) synonyms in vertical orientation requires a deeper analysis based on their etymologies, and in lexicographical practice – accompaniments in the form of semantic explanations.

Abstract Background Thigh pain and cortical hypertrophies (CH) have been reported in the short term for specific short hip stem designs. The purpose of the study was to investigate 1) the differences in clinical outcome, thigh pain and stem survival for patients with and without CHs and 2) to identify patient and surgery-related factors being associated with the development of CHs. Methods A consecutive series of 233 patients with 246 hips was included in the present retrospective diagnostic cohort study, who had received a total hip arthroplasty (THA) between December 2007 and 2009 with a cementless, curved, short hip stem (Fitmore, Zimmer, Warsaw, IN, USA). Clinical and radiographic follow-up, including the radiographic parameters for hip geometry reconstruction, were prospectively assessed 1, 3, and 6 to 10 years after surgery. Results Cortical hypertrophies were observed in 56% of the hips after a mean of 7.7 years, compared to 53% after 3.3 years being mostly located in Gruen zone 3 and 5. There was no significant difference for the Harris Hip Score and UCLA score for patients with and without CHs. Only one patient with a mild CH in Gruen zone 5 and extensive heterotopic ossifications around the neck of the stem reported thigh pain. The Kaplan Meier survival rate after 8.6 years was 99.6% (95%-CI; 97.1–99.9%) for stem revision due to aseptic loosening and no association with CHs could be detected. Postoperative increase in hip offset was the only risk factor being associated with the development of CHs in the regression model (ΔHO; OR 1.1 (1.0–1.2); p = 0.001). Conclusions The percentage of cortical hypertrophies remained almost constant in the mid-term compared to the short-term with the present cementless short hip stem design. The high percentage of cortical hypertrophies seems not be a cause for concern with this specific implant in the mid-term. Level of evidence Diagnostic Level IV
