Biocompatible and morphable hydrogels capable of multimode reprogrammable, and adaptive shape changes are potentially useful for diverse biomedical applications. However, existing morphable systems often rely on complicated structural designs involving cumbersome and energy-intensive fabrication processes. Here, we report a simple electric-field-activated protein network migration strategy to reversibly program silk-protein hydrogels with controllable and reprogrammable complex shape transformations. The application of a low electric field enables the convergence of net negatively charged protein cross-linking networks toward the anode (isoelectric point plane) due to the pH gradient generated in the process, facilitating the formation of a gradient network structure and systems suitable for three-dimensional shape change. These tunable protein networks can be reprogrammed or permanently fixed by control of the polymorphic transitions. We show that these morphing hydrogels are capable of conformally interfacing with biological tissues by programming the shape changes and a bimorph structure consisting of aligned carbon nanotube multilayers and the silk hydrogels was assembled to illustrate utility as an implantable bioelectronic device for localized low-voltage electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve in a rabbit. This paper presents a Volterra series reduced-order model method to evaluate aerodynamic forces of aircraft engine blade designs, whose shape changes during design and are always excited by upstream wakes. The method uses a superposition of the steady and dynamic Volterra series to reach this aim. The steady series represents the influence of the blade shape changes on the blade aerodynamic forces. The dynamic series represents the impact of the unsteady upstream wakes on the blade aerodynamic forces. A T106LPT blade is used as an example to discuss the proposed method. The accuracy of the ROM method is analyzed by the example at the wake excitation condition with or without shape-change. The example shows that the ROM method can predict the wake induced pressure variation of a shape-change blade without repeated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interaction design is distinguished from most other design disciplines through its temporal form. Temporal form is the computational structure that enables and demands a temporal expression in the resulting design. Temporal form is what enables poetry. In music, temporal form is the composition of tones, pauses, and timbre arranged into harmonies and rhythms. In interaction design it is, for instance, the behaviors of pixels on a screen or the movements in shape-changing interfaces. In this paper we show the power of working explicitly with temporal form in designing computational things. We give a nuanced account of what temporal form is in interaction design, and we look at related work synthesizing what we already know of the temporal concerns in interaction design and HCI. In the second part we present a design experiment through which we explore the experiential qualities of a set of 11 simple temporal forms by letting a series of expert designers reflect upon them. We borrow a framework from Boorstin's film theory in which he distinguishes between the voyeuristic, the vicarious, and the visceral experience. We show how to use rhythms, complexity, gentle or forceful behavior, etc., to create experiences of "being alive," being entertained, or being something that we empathize with. 3D bioprinting is usually implemented on flat surfaces, posing serious limitations in the fabrication of multilayered curved constructs. 4D bioprinting, combining 3D bioprinting with time-dependent stimuli-induced transformation, enables the fabrication of shape-changing constructs. Here, a 4D biofabrication method is reported for cartilage engineering based on the differential swelling of a smart multi-material system made from two hydrogel-based materials: hyaluronan and alginate. Two ink formulations are used: tyramine-functionalized hyaluronan (HAT, high-swelling) and alginate with HAT (AHAT, low-swelling). Both inks have similar elastic, shear-thinning, and printability behavior. The inks are 3D printed into a bilayered scaffold before triggering the shape-change by using liquid immersion as stimulus. In time (4D), the differential swelling between the two zones leads to the scaffold's self-bending. Different designs are made to tune the radius of curvature and shape. A bioprinted formulation of AHAT and human bone marrow cells demonstrates high cell viability. After 28 days in chondrogenic medium, the curvature is clearly present while cartilage-like matrix production is visible on histology. A proof-of-concept of the recently emerged technology of 4D bioprinting with a specific application for the design of curved structures potentially mimicking the curvature and multilayer cellular nature of native cartilage is demonstrated., (© 2022 The Authors. Abstract: This paper presents a kinematic procedure to synthesize planar mechanisms capable of approximating a shape change defined by a general set of curves. These “morphing curves,” referred to as design profiles, differ from each other by a combination of displacement in the plane, shape variation, and notable differences in arc length. Where previous rigid-body shape-change work focused on mechanisms composed of rigid links and revolute joints to approximate curves of roughly equal arc length, this work introduces prismatic joints into the mechanisms in order to produce the different desired arc lengths. A method is presented to iteratively search along the profiles for locations that are best suited for prismatic joints. The result of this methodology is the creation of a chain of rigid bodies connected by revolute and prismatic joints that can approximate a set of design profiles. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A shear zone developed in the Teshima granite in the Ryoke metamorphic belt of Japan contains isolated K-feldspar inclusions showing various shapes within deformed host quartz grains. We present a shape-change model for isolated K-feldspar inclusions, which is a mathematical equation that considers stress, inclusion size, temperature, and the duration of deformation. To calculate the shape-change pattern (i.e., the aspect ratio and size of inclusions) with respect to deformation duration using the model, we used values for deformation temperature (~500–600 °C) and paleo-stress (90 ± 10 MPa) estimated from deformed quartz microstructures within the shear zone. Shape-change patterns were obtained by calculating the model at the estimated range of temperatures with an interval of 25 °C and at the estimated paleo-stress. Shape-change patterns were subsequently corrected by compensating for the effect of post-deformation annealing during exhumation of the shear zone. Deformation duration was estimated by identifying the shape-change pattern calculated by the model that most closely corresponded to the observed shape-change pattern for the shear zone and considering the cooling rate of the Ryoke belt. The resultant deformation duration of the shear zone is estimated as 16,500–8400 yr under conditions of T = 550 °C and σ = 90 ± 10 MPa. Through their anisotropic cellular mesostructure and differential swelling and shrinking properties, hygroscopic plant structures move in response to changes in the environment without consuming metabolic energy. When the movement is choreographed in sequential time steps, either in individual structures or with a coordinated interplay of various structural elements, complex functionalities such as dispersal and protection of seeds are achieved. Inspired by the multi-phase motion in plant structures, this paper presents a method to physically program the timescale and the sequences of shape-change in 4D-printed hygromorphic structures. Using the FDM 3D-printing method, we have developed multi-layered, multi-material functional bilayers that combine highly hygroscopic active layers (printed with hygroscopic bio-composite materials) with hydrophobic restrictive and blocking layers (printed with PLA and TPC materials). The timescale of motion is programmed through the design of the mesostructured layers and 3D-printing process parameters, including thickness (number of printed active layers), porosity (filling ratio of the active layer), and water permeability (filling ratio of the blocking layer). Through a series of experiments, it is shown that the timescale of motion can be extended by increasing the thickness of the active layer, decreasing the porosity of the active layer, or increasing the filling ratio of the hydrophobic restrictive and blocking layers. Similarly, a lower thickness of the active layer and lower filling ratio of all layers result in a faster motion. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate several prototypes that exhibit sequential motion, including an aperture with overlapping elements where each completes its movement sequentially to avoid collision, and a self-locking mechanism where defined areas of the structure are choreographed to achieve a multi-step self-shaping and locking function. Water‐ and/or temperature‐triggered polymer actuators have great potential in robotics, microfabrication and micromanipulation, cell culture, artificial scaffolds, muscles, and motors. In the past few years, a large amount of work has been carried out, and several innovative concepts have been proposed to address challenges such as actuation with large‐scale displacement in a very short time, actuation of large‐sized samples, complex 3D shaping, directional control, multiresponsive actuation, and strong actuators. Herein, the progress made in the field of actuators triggered by water, temperature, and a combination of both is presented, emphasizing the new concepts of fast and direction‐controlled actuation, the corresponding mechanisms, the associated challenges, and future tasks and perspectives. Artificial water‐ and/or temperature‐triggered polymer actuators showing complex and fast shape changes with large dimensions are possible using three‐dimensional printing, photolithography, laser writing, electrospinning and their combinations. The progress made in this field is shown with emphasis on the new concepts of fast and direction‐controlled actuation, the corresponding mechanisms, the associated challenges, and the future tasks and perspectives. Shape-changing interfaces are tangible, physically dynamic devices which enable user-experience beyond 2D screens. Within Human Computer Interaction, researchers are developing these from low-resolution, low-fidelity prototypes, toward a vision of a truly malleable world. The main focus is in producing and testing hardware, and basic user interactions, which leaves the question unanswered: what are shape-changing interfaces good for? In response, we propose the use of design fiction to investigate potential applications for this technology: to create and analyse artifacts relating to future use-scenarios for shape-change. Whilst research within shape-change often proposes future use-cases for prototypes during discussion, they are seldom in a form that presents them as everyday artifacts. Here, we present and discuss a printed game-play instruction manual for a truly high resolution shape-changing game entitledFirst Hand, which aims to draw parallels between current gaming practices and the tangible nature of shape-changing interfaces. We describe a robotic material that tightly integrates sensing, actuation, computation, and communication to perform autonomous shape change. The composite consists of multiple cells, each with the ability to control their local stiffness (by Joule heating of a thermoplastic) and communicate with their local neighbors. We also present a distributed algorithm for calculating the inverse kinematic solution of the resulting N-body system by iteratively solving a series of problems with reduced kinematics. We describe material design choices, mechanism design, algorithm, and manufacturing, emphasizing the interdisciplinary codesign problem that robotic materials pose, and demonstrate the results from a series of shape-changing experiments.

Materials & Methods: Non-viral mechanisms to enable targeting while avoiding off-target delivery have arisen via biological, chemical, and physical engineering strategies., Discussion: Herein we will discuss the physical parameters in particle design that promote tissue- and cell-targeted delivery of genetic cargo. We will discuss systemic concerns, such as circulation, tissue localization, and clearance, as well as cell-scale obstacles, such as cellular uptake and nucleic acid packaging., Conclusion: In particular, we will focus on engineering particle shape and size in order to enhance delivery and promote precise targeting. Abstract: A defective platelet glycoprotein (GP) Ib/IX/V complex [von Willebrand factor (VWF) receptor] results in Bernard-Soulier syndrome (BSS), which is characterized by macrothrombocytopenia and impaired ristocetin- and thrombin-induced platelet aggregation. We found 2 independent BSS-variant families: Case I [compound heterozygous mutations, p.Glu331X and a frame shift by a deletion at c.1444delA of GPIbα (GP1BA) terminating at a premature stop codon (p.Thr452ProfsX58)], and case II [homozygous nonsense mutation at c.1723C>T, p.Gln545X]. Case I platelets expressed no GPIbα, resulting in absence of ristocetin-induced platelet aggregation (RIPA) and 50% reduction in thrombin-induced aggregation with no shape change. The mother''s platelets had 50% the expression level of A-type GPIbα (4-repeated VNTR: variable number of tandem repeats, p.[Thr145Met; Ser399_Pro411[4]]); the father''s platelets had the same expression level of C-type GPIbα (2-repeated VNTR, p.Ser399_Pro411dup) as the mother''s platelets. The mother''s RIPA was significantly higher than the father''s. Thrombin-induced aggregation was normal in both parents. Case II platelets expressed a GPIbα with an abnormal cytoplasmic tail, p.Gln545X-truncated GPIbα, which complexed with GPIX and GPV on the cell surface; its expression level of the complex was normal. Case II platelets had reversible RIPA, with no ATP release, and weak thrombin-induced aggregation without shape change. These results suggest that a signaling process through the GPIbα cytoplasmic tail required for full platelet activation is defective in BSS variant case II and a length polymorphism of GPIbα is associated with a modified level of RIPA heterozygous BSS case I.
