Colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) are atomically flat, quasi-two-dimensional particles of a semiconductor. Despite intense interest in their optical properties, several observations concerning the emission of CdSe NPLs remain puzzling. While their ensemble photoluminescence spectrum consists of a single narrow peak at room temperature, two distinct emission features appear at temperatures below ∼160 K. Several competing explanations for the origin of this two-color emission have been proposed. Here, we present temperature- and time-dependent experiments demonstrating that the two emission colors are due to two subpopulations of uncharged and charged NPLs. We study dilute films of isolated NPLs, thus excluding any explanation relying on collective effects due to NPL stacking. Temperature-dependent measurements explain that trion emission from charged NPLs is bright at cryogenic temperatures, while temperature activation of nonradiative Auger recombination quenches the trion emission above 160 K. Experimental measurements of X-ray absorption (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism(XMCD) are widely used to study electronic excitations and magnetism in materials.Theoretical interpretations of those measurements play a crucial role in the understandingof those studies. We have developped new methods to calculate X-ray absorptionand XMCD at the K edge based on the use of the density functionnal theory (DFT), ofpseudopotentials and of the continued fraction approach. Those methods allow a parameterfree treatment of the core hole.We applied those methods on a wide range of materials, from weak to strong electroniccorrelation, in order to see if a monoparticle approximation could describe XAS andXMCD spectra.We rst sudied the X-ray absorption of graphene, a weakly correlated material,in order to determine if the interlayer state responsible for the supraconductivity ofintercalated graphites could be seen in XAS, as suggested by recent experiments. We thencalculated the strongly correlated systems NiO, CoO, CuO, La2CuO4 and Ca2−xCuO2Cl2.We showed the presence of non-local excitations in the dipolar part of the absorption spectrain those systems, and proposed an independant method to measure the charge-transfergap based on the XAS of a hole-doped system. We showed the importance of many-bodyeects in the edge region and attributed them to multi-determinant eects with the helpof a concolution with photoemission formula. Last, we successfully calculated the XMCDspectra of iron and cobalt under pressure, and discussed of the relative importance ofdipole and quadrupole transitions, of anisotropy and of the accuracy of sum rules.; Les mesures d'absorption X et de dichroïsme circulaire magnétique sont largementutilisées pour étudier les excitations électroniques et le magnétisme des matériaux. Cesétudes dépendent de manière cruciale de l'interprétation théorique des mesures expérimentales.Nous avons développé de nouvelles méthodes de calcul de l'absorption X (XAS)au seuil K et du dichroïsme magnétique circulaire (XMCD) au seuil K basées sur l'utilisationde la théorie de la fonctionnelle de densité (DFT), des pseudopotentiels et de lafraction continue. Ces méthodes permettent le traitement des eets du trou de coeur dansune approche sans paramètre libre.Nous avons appliqué ces méthodes à toute une gamme de matériaux, en allant de lafaible corrélation vers la forte corrélation électronique, an de voir si une approximationmonoparticule pouvait décrire les spectres XAS et XMCD. Nous avons d'abord étudiéles spectres XAS du graphène, matériau faiblement corrélé, an de déterminer si l'état interlayer , responsable de la supraconductivité dans les graphites intercalés, pouvaitêtre vu en XAS comme suggéré par des mesures récentes. Nous avons ensuite abordé lessystèmes à forte corrélation que sont NiO, CoO, CuO, La2CuO4 et Ca2−xCuO2Cl2. Nousavons montré la présence d'excitations non locales dans la partie dipolaire des spectresXAS dans ces systèmes, ce qui nous a permis de proposer une nouvelle méthode indépendantede mesure de la largeur de la bande interdite basée sur le XAS dans un système dopéavec des trous. Nous avons montré l'importance des effets à N corps dans la région duseuil de ces spectres et avons attribué cela à des effets à plusieurs déterminants de Slaterà l'aide d'une formule de convolution par la photoémission. Enfin, le XMCD du fer et ducobalt sous pression sont calculés avec succès, ce qui permet de discuter de l'importancerelative des transitions dipolaires et quadrupolaires, de l'anisotropie et de la pertinencede l'utilisation des règles de somme.

Die Form von resonant angeregen Valenz-Fluoreszenzspektren hängt sowohl vonder Energie der einfallenden Strahlung, als auch von Größe und Richtung desImpulsübertrags q ab, falls harte Röntgenstrahlen benutzt werden. DieserEffekt ist auf die elektronische Bandstruktur der Valenz- undLeitungselektronen der Probe, in Kombination mit der Energie- undImpulserhaltung des Streuprozesses zurückzuführen, woraus dieBloch-k-Impulserhaltung des resonant inelastischen Streuprozesses folgt.In dieser Arbeit wird die Gültigkeit der Bloch-k-Impulserhaltung im Bereichder harten Röntgenstrahlen und ihre Anwendbarkeit auf metallische Probengezeigt. Dazu werden die K-Kante von Cu und die K-Kante von Ni in NiAluntersucht. Ausgehend von einer LAPW Bandstrukturrechnung werden resonantangerege Valenz-Fluoreszensspektren berechnet. Diese stimmen gut mit dengemessenen Spektren überein.Weiterhin werden mehrere Effekte untersucht, die den Bloch-k-erhaltendenresonant inelasischen Röntgenstreuprozess beeinflussen.Im Gegensatz zur Streuung im Bereich der weichen Röntgenstrahlung ist an derK-Kante von Cu keine Zerstörung der Bloch-k-Erhaltung durchElektron-Phonon-Wechselwirkung im Zwischenzustand meßbar. In der Tat ist nurein kleiner nicht-k-erhaltender Anteil von wenigen Prozent zu erwarten, dadie Lebensdauer des 1s Rumpf-Lochs von Cu kürzer als dieElektron-Phonon-Wechselwirkungszeit ist.Mit Hilfe einer Superzellen-Rechnung an Cu wird gezeigt, daß die Abschirmungdes 1s-Rumpf-Lochs keinen Einfluß auf den Streuprozeß hat, falls an denK-Kanten der schweren 3d-Übergangsmetalle angeregt wird. DieSuperzellen-Methode wird im Detail beschrieben, und die Konvergenz derLadungsdichte bezüglich der Größe der Superzelle wird ausführlichuntersucht.Die Intensität des 3d-nach-1s-Quadupolübergangs relativ zum4p-nach-1s-Dipolübergang wird durch die Berechnung der entsprechendenÜbergangs-Matrixelemente bestimmt. Das Ergebnis wird anhand von Ga, Ge undAs überprüft, indem berechnete Floreszenzspektren mit gemessenen verglichenwerden, da für diese Elemente die 3d-Fluoreszenzlinie von der4p-Fluoreszenzlinie getrennt ist. Ferner wird die Abschirmung des3d9-Endzustands im Fall des 3d-nach-1s-Quadrupolübergangs untersucht. Damitist es möglich, sowohl die Intensität als auch die energetische Position desQuadrupolbeitrags zur Fluoreszenz für Cu zu bestimmen.Die Valenz-Fluoreszenzlinie der schweren 3d-Übergangsmetalle wird teilweisevom radiativen KNN Auger-Satelliten ueberdeckt. Die Intensität diesesSatelliten, dem ein Doppelionisationsprozess während der Emission einesFluoreszenzphotons zugrunde liegt, wird für die Elemente Co bis Asuntersucht. Um die Satellitenlinie in der Auswertung von Bloch-k-selektivenValenz-Fluoreszenzspektren richtig berücksichtigen zu können, wird derKNN-Satellit im Rahmen eines semiempirischen Modells behandelt, das aus demresonant inelastischen Streuquerschnitt hergeleitet und anhand derradiativen KMN- und KMM-Auger-Satelliten von Cu bestätigt wird Darüber hinaus werden die Cu K beta' und Cu K beta'' Satelliten der Cu Kbeta_1,3 Fluoreszenzlinie untersucht. Diese Satelliten stammen von einemDoppelionisationsprozeß während der Absorption eines Photons. Aus ihrerSchwellenenergie kann geschlossen werden, daß ihnen ein3d-Zuschauer-Lochzustand zugrunde liegt, während der kurze Sättigungsbereichdarauf hindeutet, daß diese Satelliten von shakeup-Prozessen dominiertwerden., The shape of resonantly excited valence fluorescence spectra depends on theenergy of the incident radiation as well as on the size and the direction ofthe momentum transfer q if hard x-rays are used. This effect is due to theelectronic band structure of the valence and conduction electrons of thesample in combination with the energy and momentum conservation of thescattering process, giving rise to the law of Bloch k-momentum conservationof the resonant inelastic scattering process.In this thesis, the validity of the Bloch k-momentum conservation in thehard x-ray regime and its applicability to metallic samples are demonstratedby probing the K edge of Cu and the K edge of Ni in NiAl. Based on a LAPWbandstructure calculation resonantly excited valence fluorescence spectraare calculated. These agree well with the measured spectra.Four effects influencing the Bloch k-conserving resonant inelastic x-rayscattering process have been investigated. In contrast to scattering in the soft x-ray regime a destruction of thek-conservation due to electron-phonon interaction in the intermediate stateis not measurable at the K edge of Cu. Indeed, only a small k-unselectivefraction of a few percent is expected, since the lifetime of the 1s corehole in Cu is shorter than the electron-phonon interaction time.By means of a supercell calculation of Cu it is found that screening of the1s core hole does not alter the scattering process if the K edges of thelate 3d elements are probed. A detailed description of the supercellapproach is given. The convergence of the charge density with respect to thesize of the supercell is thoroughly investigated.The intensity of the quadrupolar 3d-to-1s transition relative to the dipolar4p-to-1s transition is obtained from the calculation of the correspondingtransition matrix elements. The result is verified by comparing calculatedto measured fluorescence spectra in the case of Ga, Ge, and As, where the 3dfluorescence line is separated from the 4p fluorescence line. Moreover, thescreening of the 3d9 final state configuration in case of the quadrupolar3d-to-1s transition is investigated. This allows to determine properly theintensity and the energetic position of the quadrupolar fluorescencecontribution in the case of Cu.The valence fluorescence lines of the late 3d elements is partly obscured bythe KNN radiative Auger satellite. The intensity of this satellite line,which is due to a double ionization process during the emission of afluorescence photon, is investigated for the elements from Co to As. Inorder to be properly considered in the interpretation of the Blochk-selective valence floresence spectra, the shape of the KNN satellite isaccounted for by a semiempirical model, which is derived from the resonantinelastic scattering cross section. The model is confirmed by investigatingthe KMN and KMM radiative Auger satellites of Cu.Moreover, the Cu K beta' and Cu K beta'' satellites of the Cu K beta_1,3fluorescence line are examined. These satellites stem from a doubleionization process during the absorption of a photon. From their thresholdenergy it is possible to confirm that they are due to a 3d spectator hole.The short saturation range indicates that these satellites are dominated byshakeup processes.

In dieser Arbeit wird die elektronische Struktur von CuO mit der Methode der resonanten Röntgen-Raman-Streuung untersucht. Dabei werden sowohl die Besonderheiten dieses Übergangsmetalloxids herausgestellt, als auch das Potenzial der Methode aufgezeigt. Zunächst wird erläutert, wie sich durch die Messung von Kupfer-K-alpha Fluoreszenzspektren bei einer Anregungsenergie wenige eV unterhalb der Kupfer K-Kante Rückschlüsse über die unbesetzte Zustandsdichte von CuO und deren Symmetrie ziehen lassen. Dabei wird ausgenutzt, dass verschiedene Zwischenzustände des resonant unelastischen Streuprozesses durch die sogenannte Raman-Verschiebung voneinander getrennt werden können. Weiterhin sind die Beiträge von Zwischenzuständen verschiedener Symmetrie zum Fluoreszenzspektrum stark von der Polarisation des einfallenden Röntgenstrahls abhängig. Auf diese Weise lassen sich drei Strukturen in den gemessenen Spektren identifizieren und eindeutig unterschiedlichen Zwischenzuständen zuordnen. Ein weiterer Aspekt der Arbeit ist die Untersuchung der Wechselwirkung des 1s-Rumpflochs im Zwischenzustand mit den stark lokalisierten Kupfer 3d-Elektronen im CuO. Bei Anregungsenergien wenige eV oberhalb der Kupfer K-Kante führt diese Wechselwirkung zu sogenannten Shakeup-Satelliten in den Energieverlustspektren. Im speziellen Fall des CuO tritt ein solcher Satellit bei einem Energieverlust von etwa 5 eV auf und lässt sich einer Anregung aus dem bindenden Grundzustand des 3d-Elektronensystems in einen antibindenden angeregten Zustand zuordnen. Durch eine störungstheoretische Behandlung der Coulomb-Wechselwirkung zwischen dem Rumpfloch und den 3d-Elektronen wird ein Ausdruck für den Streuquerschnitt des Shakeup-Prozesses hergeleitet. Mit dessen Hilfe lässt sich die beobachtete Abhängigkeit der Intensität des Shakeup-Satelliten und seiner Position im Energieverlustspektrum von der Anregungsenergie erklären. In bestimmten Streugeometrien ist zudem eine starke Streuwinkelabhängigkeit der Intensität des Satelliten zu beobachten. Im Rahmen einer Modellrechnung wird diese Abhängigkeit auf einen Polarisationseffekt zurückgeführt., In this thesis the electronic structure of CuO is investigated utilizing resonant X-ray Raman Scattering. The special properties of this transition metal oxide are emphasized and the potential of the method is shown. First it is explained how one can draw conclusions about the unoccupied density of states of CuO and its symmetry from measurements of the copper K-alpha fluorescence by using an excitation energy of a few eV below the absorption threshold. By this means one can make use of the fact that different intermediate states of the resonant scattering process can be separated by the so-called Raman-shift. Moreover, the magnitude of the contributions of intermediate states of different symmetry to the fluorescence spectrum strongly depend on the polarisation of the incident x-ray beam. Thereby, three features in the measured spectra can be identified and can be attributed to different intermediate states. Another aspect of this thesis is the study of the interaction between the 1s core-hole in the intermediate state of the scattering process and the localized 3d-electrons of copper in CuO. At excitation energies of a few eV above the absorption threshold of the copper K-edge this interaction leads to the so-called shakeup-satellites in the energy loss spectra. In the special case of CuO such a satellite shows up at an energy loss of about 5 eV. This satellite is attributed to an excitation from the binding ground state of the 3d-electron system to an antibinding excited state. By means of a perturbation theoretical treatment of the Coulomb interaction between the core-hole and the 3d-electrons an expression for the cross-section of the shakeup-process is derived. Thereby the observed excitation energy dependence of the shakeup-satellite's intensity and its position in the energy loss spectrum can be explained. Furthermore, its intensity shows a strong dependence on the scattering angle in certain scattering geometries. By means of a model calculation this dependence is attributed to a polarisation-effect.
