Herbal products with antioxidant properties have gained attention for their potential impact on male reproductive health. One such botanical, Ceratonia siliqua (commonly known as carob), has been empirically used by infertile men in Iran and Turkey. Carob, a pod-bearing tree native to the Mediterranean, exhibits promising therapeutic potential for various aspects of male reproductive health. Carob consumption may positively affect sperm count, motility, and morphology in infertile men. The proposed mechanisms involve antioxidant activity, improved blood flow, and enhanced energy production within sperm. Carob's richness in antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids might counteract oxidative stress, a major contributor to sperm dysfunction. Carob may influence male sex hormones by potentially stimulating testosterone production and inhibiting estrogen conversion. While carob demonstrates promise as a natural supplement for male fertility, more robust research is necessary to solidify its therapeutic role. This exploration could pave the way for the development of novel dietary or nutraceutical interventions to address male infertility. While preliminary research suggests positive effects on sperm health and potential hormonal influence, robust clinical trials are needed to solidify carob's therapeutic efficacy. Our study retrospectively investigated differential patterns of the functional connectivity (FC) of core brain regions synchronous with morphometric changes associated with sexual dysfunction in menopausal women, and their correlations with sexual hormones. Twenty-three premenopausal women (mean age: 41.52 ± 7.38 years) and 21 menopausal women (mean age: 55.52 ± 2.80 years) underwent sex hormone level measurements with high-resolution T1 and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during rest, neutral, and sexual arousal conditions. Analysis of covariance adjusted for age was used to compare the FC and gray matter (GM) volume between the two groups. Menopausal women showed lower GM volumes in the superior frontal gyrus (SFG), superior temporal pole, parahippocampal gyrus (PHG), hippocampus (Hip), amygdala (Amg), and cerebellum (Cb) compared to premenopausal women (p < 0.05). In addition, compared to premenopausal women, menopausal women showed decreased FC of seed regions involved in the SFG, frontal eye fields, and Amg, as well as target regions involved in the PHG, Hip, inferior frontal gyrus, Cb, and vermis (p < 0.005). Furthermore, the FC between the right Amg and right Cb and between the left Amg and right Cb during sexual arousal in both groups was positively correlated with total estrogen and estradiol levels, respectively (p < 0.01). The GM volume values in the right Amg and right Cb were positively correlated with total estrogen and estradiol levels (p < 0.05). Our study demonstrated an association between menopause-related differential FC and GM volume variations and fluctuating sex hormones. Our findings highlight that overlapping brain regions with functional alterations and morphometric changes are closely linked with menopausal symptom-related decreases in sexual arousal and hormone levels. Busulfan (Bus), is an alkylating agent widely used in chemotherapy which has been proven to possess toxic side effects on testicles. This study was carried out to compare the probable treatment effects of resveratrol (Res) or/and l -carnitine (Lca), as strong antioxidants, on the testicular tissue as well as on the level of sex hormones in busulfan-induced azoospermic rat models. A total of 78 adult male rats, were divided into six different experimental groups including: 1) Control; 2) Lca + Res; 3) BUS; 4) Bus + Lca; 5) BUS + Res and 6) Bus + Lca + Res. Busulfan was intraperitoneally administered in a single dose (10 mg/kg b.w), while resveratrol (20 mg/kg b.w/day) and l -carnitine (200 mg/kg b.w/day) were orally administered by gavage during 48 consecutive days to the rats. At the end of the experiment in all groups the level of LH, FSH, and testosterone were biochemically analyzed by ELISA and the testicular tissue evaluated histologically using stereological technique. Results showed that Lca or/and Res, increased the body and testis weight, the volume of the testis, interstitial tissue, germinal epithelium, and seminiferous tubule, the number of the different cells of germinal epithelium and the level of testosterone. On the other hand, Lca, Res and their combination decreased the concentration of LH and FSH compared to the group treated with Bus. In conclusion, these results suggested that l -carnitine or/and resveratrol treatment significantly attenuated busulfan -induced changes of the rat reproductive system led to the recovery of both testis and sperm parameters. However, co-administration of L-ca and Res was more effective than their individual treatment. The primary study endpoint was to assess the frequency of disorders related to the clinical incidence of puberty symptoms among children suffering chronic kidney disease, and the secondary endpoint was also to assess the relationship between such manifestations and the serum level of sexual hormones. This cross-sectional study was performed on children with chronic renal failure (more than three months after the onset of the disease). Al baseline characteristics were retrospectively extracted from the hospital recorded files. The pieces of evidence of anemia and acidosis also appeared more in those with delayed puberty. Comparing the groups with delayed puberty and normal puberty showed significantly lower mean body weight and lower mean height in the group with delayed puberty as compared to those with normal status. Comparing serum hormonal conditions between the groups with normal and delayed puberty also showed significantly reduced serum levels of FSH, LH, testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone, as well as increased the serum level of prolactin in the group suffering delayed puberty. The main determinants for delayed puberty in patients suffering chronic renal insufficiency included abnormality in serum hormonal status, along with pieces of evidence of anemia or acidosis. Children with chronic renal insufficiency suffer from delayed puberty. Costs of reproduction shape the life-history evolution of investment in current and future reproduction and thereby aging. Androgens have been proposed to regulate the physiology governing these investments. Furthermore, androgens are hypothesized to play a central role in carotenoid-dependent sexual signaling, regulating how much carotenoids are diverted to ornamentation and away from somatic maintenance, increasing oxidative stress, and accelerating aging. We investigated these relationships in male three-spined stickleback in which we elevated 11-ketotestosterone and supplied vitamin E, an antioxidant, in a 2 × 2 design. Androgen elevation shortened the time stickleback maintained reproductive activities. We suspect that this effect is caused by 11-ketotestosterone stimulating investment in current reproduction, but we detected no evidence for this in our measurements of reproductive effort: nest building, body composition, and breeding coloration. Carotenoid-dependent coloration was even slightly decreased by 11-ketotestosterone elevation and was left unaffected by vitamin E. Red coloration correlated with life expectancy and reproductive capacity in a quadratic manner, suggesting overinvestment of the individuals exhibiting the reddest bellies. In contrast, blue iris color showed a negative relationship with survival, suggesting physiological costs of producing this aspect of nuptial coloration. In conclusion, our results support the hypothesis that androgens regulate investment in current versus future reproduction, yet the precise mechanisms remain elusive. The quadratic relationships between sexual signal expression and aspects of quality have wider consequences for how we view sexual selection on ornamentation and its relationship with aging.

Background: Growing evidences indicate that sex hormones have an effect on cognitive functions, and that Bulimia Nervosa (BN) is associated with cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of hormonal contraception (HC) use on four cognitive functions that are impaired in patients with BN.Methods: This retrospective exploratory study included 103 women with a diagnosis of BN based on the DSM-5 criteria. Their age ranged from 15 to 45 years, and 46.6% were taking HC (oral, transdermal, or intrauterine). Cognition was assessed with the d2 test (attention), Iowa gambling task (IGT; decision making), Brixton spatial anticipation test (set shifting), and Rey-Osterrieth complex figure test (central coherence). Data were analyzed with logistic regression models to estimate the adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of HC effect on the neuropsychological test scores.Results: In the multivariate model, HC use was significantly associated with better scores for two d2 test indices: F-score [OR = 0.98, 95% CI = (0.95; 0.99)] and final total score ratio [OR = 0.87, 95% CI = (0.77; 0.99)]. HC was also associated with a better understanding of the IGT explicit rules. No difference between the two groups (HC and non-HC use) was detected for set shifting and central coherence.Conclusions: This exploratory study suggests that HC could have effects on the sustained attention and concentration in women with BN. More studies are needed to confirm these results.

Methadone and buprenorphine are two widely used substances for opioid-based detoxification. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of buprenorphine and methadone on the redox status of testicular tissue, sperm parameter analysis, and hormonal changes in a rat model. A total of 40 male Wistar rats (220–250 g) were randomly divided into four groups: methadone, buprenorphine, shift of methadone to buprenorphine, and control groups. At days 21 and 42 post-treatment, the animals (n = 5 for each time) were deeply anesthetized, blood sera were isolated, and testes of the rats were dissected out. The levels of blood total testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as well as antioxidant enzymes activity in the testicular tissue were measured. Sperm parameters, including sperm viability, motility, and count, were calculated and compared between the groups. Both buprenorphine and methadone treatments induced oxidative stress, suppressed sperm parameters, and resulted in sexual hormone dysfunction compared with the control group. The highest levels of alterations were detected in the shift group. In conclusion, methadone and buprenorphine enhanced testicular oxidative stress, suppressed blood levels of sexual hormone, including LH, FSH, TT, and FT, and resulted in suppressed sperm parameters. There were no significant differences between methadone and buprenorphine treatments in terms of their adverse effects on sperm parameters and antioxidant activity. However, shift of methadone to buprenorphine resulted in the worst adverse effect in the male reproductive system in the rat model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemical pesticides possess toxic and destructive impacts on the reproductive system and disrupt endocrine function. In this experimental study, the effect of movento, as a chemical pesticide, was investigated in comparison with chitosan, a biological pesticide, on the female reproductive system in vivo. In this study, 56 mice were randomly dived into 7 groups including control and experimental groups treated with movento and chitosan. After a 21-day treatment, mice were killed and their ovaries and blood being collected. In addition, the samples were fixed and stained with H & E method. The results exhibited that treatment with 2.5 and 5 mg/kg chitosan had no significant effect on the number and diameter of primary, secondary and antral follicles, while these items were significantly reduced in 10 mg/kg ch-itosan group and all movento-treated groups as well. In addition, the level of sexual hormones, such as estradiol, FSH and LH, was decreased in 10 mg/kg chitosan group and all movento-treated groups in comparison with the control gr-oup. The findings showed that movento affected the sexual hormone levels, ovary and ovarian follicle structure and in-duced abnormality in female reproductive system, while chitosan, as a biological pesticide, should be used due to its minimum effects on female reproductive system

In this study, we investigated the effect of acute administration of gold nanorods (AuNRs) on testicular function, sexual hormones, and oxidative stress parameters in male albino rats. Forty mature male albino rats were divided into two equal groups (n = 20/each). The first group received 1 ml saline solution intraperitoneally (i.p.). The second group received single i.p. injection of 75 μg 50 nm AuNRs/kg/bwt. Five rats from each group were sacrificed on days 1, 3, 7, and 14 post treatment and blood samples were collected for hormonal and biochemical analysis. Testes were collected from each group at each time point for histopathology, morphometric, and transmission electron microscope analyses of testis and epididymis. Results indicated that i.p. injection of AuNRs did not produce any histopathological changes. Morphometric analysis of testicular samples revealed that the height of lining epithelium was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in AuNR group on days 3 and 14 post treatment, and the minor axis of seminiferous tubules was higher (P < 0.05) in AuNR-injected rats than in control group. For the epididymis, the number of spermatozoa was significantly (P < 0.05) higher on days 7 and 14 after AuNR injection when compared with control rats. AuNRs were not detected by TEM at all time points of the experiment. Serum analysis demonstrated that total and free testosterone values significantly (P < 0.05) increased on days 1, 3, 7, and 14 post AuNR injection. LH was higher (P < 0.05) in AuNRs-injected rats on days 3, 7, and 14 post injection, while FSH values were higher (P < 0.05) in AuNR group on days 3 and 14. Malondialdehyde significantly (P < 0.05) decreased on days 3, 7, and 14 in AuNR group, while catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase values were significantly (P < 0.05) elevated on days 3, 7, and 14 in AuNRs-injected rats compared with control group. Aims: Endocrinological abnormalities, including low testosterone levels, are prevalent in cirrhosis. We assessed sexual hormone status in regard to hemodynamic abnormalities and its impact on hepatic decompensation and survival. Methods: Males with cirrhosis were prospectively included in this study since 2010. Sexual hormones including bioavailable testosterone, total testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle‐stimulating hormone, prolactin, and sex hormone‐binding globulin as well as Child–Pugh score, Model for End‐stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, and hepatic venous pressure gradient were recorded. Sarcopenia was also assessed in patients with available computed tomography scans. Clinical follow‐up for hepatic decompensation, liver transplantation, and death was recorded until May 2017. Results: One hundred fourteen male cirrhotic patients were included: age 55 ± 9.4 years, MELD 13.5 (range, 7–20.7). Etiologies were alcoholic liver disease in 61(53.5%) patients, viral in 30 (26.3%) patients, and other in 23 (20.2%). Child–Pugh scores were A in 32 (28.1%) patients, B in 48 (42.1%), and C in 34 (29.8%). Levels of bioavailable testosterone and total testosterone decreased with advanced Child–Pugh score (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001) whereas prolactin increased (P = 0.002). Median bioavailable testosterone (0.8 ng/mL [0.1–2] vs. 1.68 ng/mL [0.07–2.65]; P = 0.004) and total testosterone (2.7 ng/mL [0.23–12.34] vs. 7 ng/mL [0.25–10]; P = 0.041) levels were lower in patients with severe portal hypertension (hepatic venous pressure gradient >12 mmHg). Median bioavailable testosterone (0.25 ng/mL [0.07–1.7] vs. 0.97 ng/mL [0.15–2.74)]; P = 0.017) and total testosterone levels (1.28 ng/mL [0.25–7.32] vs. 4.32 ng/mL [0.43–13.47]; P = 0.031) were significantly lower in sarcopenic patients. Median follow‐up was 13 months (0.2–75 months) and liver‐related events were recorded in 46 patients (40.4%; death, 31 [27.2%]). Low total testosterone was associated with an increased risk for hepatic decompensation and/or death, even after adjusting for Child–Pugh score, MELD, and other relevant factors (Child–Pugh score model: hazard ratio 2.503, 95% confidence interval, 1.214–5.157, P = 0.013; MELD model: hazard ratio 3.065, 95% confidence interval, 1.523–6.169, P = 0.002). Conclusion: In parallel to increasing severity of cirrhosis, levels of testosterone decline whereas prolactin levels increase. Grayanotoxin (GTX)-III is a Na-channel neurotoxin. Grayanotoxins can be found in the nectar, pollen, and other plant parts of the Rhododendron genus plants from the Ericaceae family. It is widely believed that honey produced from these plants, which are concentrated in the Black Sea region, is traditionally characterized as enhancing sexual performance. It is thought that the effective factor is dose for this compound, which has both beneficial and toxic effects reported. Therefore, it is aimed to evaluate the histological, immunohistochemical, and biochemical effects of acute and chronic impact of GTX-III in different doses on testes tissue in this study. For this purpose, 100 Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into 5 separate groups for acute and chronic research. While dose groups were (control, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, ve 0.8 μg/kg/bw) for experimental groups, a single dose (i.p.) was administered for acute impact whereas the same doses were administered daily for 3 weeks to assess chronic effect. At the end of the experiment, Johnsen testicular biopsy scoring was performed on testicular tissue samples, seminiferous tubule diameters were measured, and apoptotic cells were evaluated by TUNEL method. Testosterone, LH, and FSH levels were measured by ELISA method in serum and tissue specimens. It was found that Johnsen score of acute doses was significantly lower than the control group, and the diameter of the seminiferous tubules decreased significantly in acute and chronic dose-administered groups compared to the control. Hemorrhage, epithelial shedding, irregularity in seminiferous epithelium, and vacuolization were observed in acute and chronic dose-administered groups, and increase in apoptotic cells was determined. Hormone levels varied depending on the dose. In conclusion, it was found that dose-dependent acute and chronic effects of GTX-III are different, and this factor should be taken into account in studies to be carried out due to the adverse effects of high doses. Abstract: Women are more susceptible to autoimmune diseases than men. Autoimmunity results from tolerance breakdown toward self‐components. Recently, three transcription modulators were identified in medullary thymic epithelial cells that orchestrate immune central tolerance processes: the autoimmune regulator (AIRE), FEZ family zinc finger 2 (FEZF2 or FEZ1), and PR domain zinc finger protein 1 (PRDM1). Interestingly, these three transcription modulators regulate nonredundant tissue‐specific antigen subsets and thus cover broad antigen diversity. Recent data from different groups demonstrated that sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone) are involved in the regulation of thymic AIRE expression in humans and mice through direct transcriptional modulation and epigenetic changes. As a consequence, AIRE displays gender‐biased thymic expression, with females showing a lower expression compared with males, a finding that could explain the female susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. So far, FEZF2 has not been related to an increased gender bias in autoimmune disease. PRDM1 expression has not been shown to display gender‐differential thymic expression, but its expression level and its gene polymorphisms are associated with female‐dependent autoimmune disease risk. Altogether, various studies have demonstrated that increased female susceptibility to autoimmune diseases is in part a consequence of hormone‐driven reduced thymic AIRE expression. Background Currently, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are considered most effective methods for cancer treatment, however these strategies often result in fertility problems. A favorable alternative to prevent fertility loss in cancer patients is the cryopreservation and transplantation of sexual tissues (ovaries and/or testes). There is a low rate of fertilization following cryopreservation of ovaries prior to implantation. Therefore, in our opinion, this low rate is caused by instable blood flow during organ transplantation. Thus, this study researches a canine ovarian model that focuses on direct exposure of ovaries with blood in an experimentally induced sinus-like cavity. We implanted this tissue on the muscular layer of the stomach, which is its most vascularized region. Materials and Methods Ovarian transplantation was conducted on T1 animals (n=5), bilateral ovariectomy was performed on T2 animals (n=5), unilateral ovariectomy was conducted on T3 cases and animals in the control-sham group (n=5) did not undergo ovariectomy or transplantation. Results All isotransplanted ovaries survived. Ovaries resumed follicular growth and revascularization. Transplanted ovaries contained 75%-76% of survived small follicles (pre antral) after 60 days. The ovarian granulosa cells showed considerable resistance against ischemia. After day 30 no statistically significant differences in the level of estradiol and progesterone were observed between T1 animals and the T3 group. T1 animals showed considerably high levels of progesterone and estradiol in comparison to T2 cases. Conclusion This study showed that using blood sinus method for ovarian isotransplantation helps ovarian tissue to survive from post implantation ischemia which confirms with normal follicles presentation and intact endocrine function of the implanted ovaries.

Objective: Oxidative stress is induced by bisphenol A (BPA) and affects many organs. Vitamin E is an effective antioxidant which prevents the activity of free radicals. This study was aimed to clarify the effect of vitamin E on the oxidative stress induced by chronic administration of BPA. Materials and methods: 30 female albino rats were divided into 3 groups (10/each); group1: control rats, group 2: rats treated with bisphenol A (20 mg/ kg.B.wt) for three months, and group 3: rats treated with bisphenol A (20 mg/kg.B.wt) for three months, then treated with BPA and vitamin E (0.57/100 g B.wt) for other 15 days. Results: BPA induced hormonal disrupt in liver and kidney dysfunctions and hyperlipidemia. Vitamin E ameliorated all these parameters. Background/aim: Meningiomas of the anterior cranial fossa are often diagnosed after impaired visual function occurrence. Some epidemiologic studies suggest an association between exogenous or endogenous hormones and meningioma risk. The aim of this study is to briefly review the literature and relate a case report. Patient and methods: This study presents a case of a 51-year-old woman with a moderate visual loss of 6/10 and markedly constricted visual field in the right eye. A normal visual acuity and peripheral reduction of visual field in the left eye was documented. During medical interview, she reported a prolonged assumption of oral contraceptive. Her visual deterioration had progressed over the previous 3 months and was associated with occasional headache. MRI scanning showed a small optic pathway meningioma. Results: After various examinations, it was decided to ‘wait and see’ and no therapy was administered. The patient noticed a progressive improvement in the vision in her right eye, with corresponding improvement in the bilateral visual field. Conclusion: The case reports on the spontaneous resolution of visual loss due to the volume reduction of the anterior visual pathway compressive intracranial meningioma after interruption of prolonged assumption of oral contraceptive and focuses on the correlation between sexual hormone pathway and intracranial meningioma. Clinical trials have demonstrated the beneficial effects of Peony-Glycyrrhiza Decoction (PGD) in alleviating antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia (hyperPRL) in schizophrenic patients. In previous experiment, PGD suppressed prolactin (PRL) level in MMQ cells, involving modulating the expression of D 2 receptor (DRD 2 ) and dopamine transporter (DAT). In the present study, hyperPRL female rat model induced by dopamine blocker metoclopramide (MCP) was applied to further confirm the anti-hyperpPRL activity of PGD and underlying mechanism. In MCP-induced hyperPRL rats, the elevated serum PRL level was significantly suppressed by either PGD (2.5–10 g/kg) or bromocriptine (BMT) (0.6 mg/kg) administration for 14 days. However, in MCP-induced rats, only PGD restored the under-expressed serum progesterone (P) to control level. Both PGD and BMT administration restore the under-expression of DRD 2 , DAT and TH resulted from MCP in pituitary gland and hypothalamus. Compared to untreated group, hyperPRL animals had a marked reduction on DRD 2 and DAT expression in the arcuate nucleus. PGD (10 g/kg) and BMT (0.6 mg/kg) treatment significant reversed the expression of DRD 2 and DAT. Collectively, the anti-hyperPRL activity of PGD associates with the modulation of dopaminergic neuronal system and the restoration of serum progesterone level. Effect of 1/4 LD50 of abamectin biocide was studied on sexual hormones and histopathology of ovary, oviduct and uterus of mature female albino rats, Rattus norvegicus. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin, estradiol (E2) and progesterone were determined in plasma and brain tissue after three and seven days of treatment. The results revealed that plasma FSH and LH were significantly decreased, while prolactin hormone was significantly increased in treated animals after three and seven days. Estradiol (E2) and progesterone hormones were significantly decreased in brain tissue after three and seven days. The decrease and increase in plasma and brain tissue hormones after seven days were more than after three days. Sever congestion was noticed in the medullary blood vessels of the ovary after three days, and also it was proliferation in the interstitial stromal cells at the medullary portion after seven days of treatment. The lining mucosal epithelium showed cellular hypertrophy in oviduct after three days, also hypertrophy was observed in the lining mucosal epithelial cells as well as in the muscularis after seven days. Hypertrophy with vacuolization were detected in the lining mucosal epithelium and associated with congestion in the blood vessels of the muscularis in uterus after three days, the same result, there were focal vacuolization and degeneration as well as focal stratification in the lining mucosal epithelial cells after seven days compared to normal histological structure. In conclusion, abamectin biocide was toxic on sexual hormone and sex organs of mature female rats. This action affected on the fertility of female rats leading to severe reducing for rat population, so abamectin biocide could be use as rodenticide for rodent control program. Background: To review the possible mechanisms proposed to explain the etiology of 46, XX sex reversal by investigating the clinical characteristics and their relationships with chromosomal karyotype and the SRY(sex-determining region Y)gene. Methods: Five untreated 46, XX patients with SRY-positive were referred for infertility. Clinical data were collected, and Karyotype analysis of G-banding in lymphocytes and Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were performed. Genomic DNA from peripheral blood of the patients using QIAamp DNA Blood Kits was extracted. The three discrete regions, AZFa, AZFb and AZFc, located on the long arm of the Y chromosome, were performed by multiplex PCRs(Polymerase Chain Reaction) amplification. The set of PCR primers for the diagnosis of microdeletion of the AZFa, AZFb and AZFc region included: sY84, sY86, sY127, sY134, sY254, sY255, SRY and ZFX/ZFY. Results: Our five patients had a lower body height. Physical examination revealed that their testes were small in volume, soft in texture and normal penis. Semen analyses showed azoospermia. All patients had a higher follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH), Luteinizing Hormone(LH) level, lower free testosterone, testosterone level and normal Estradiol, Prolactin level. Karyotype analysis of all patients confirmed 46, XX karyotype, and FISH analysis showed that SRY gene were positive and translocated to Xp. Molecular analysis revealed that the SRY gene were present, and the AZFa, AZFb and AZFc region were absent. Conclusions: This study adds cases on the five new 46, XX male individuals with SRY-positive and further verifies the view that the presence of SRY gene and the absence of major regions in Y chromosome should lead to the expectance of a completely masculinised phenotype, abnormal hormone levels and infertility. Background: Currently, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are considered most effective methods for cancer treatment, however these strategies often result in fertility problems. A favorable alternative to prevent fertility loss in cancer patients is the cryopreservation and transplantation of sexual tissues (ovaries and/or testes). There is a low rate of fertilization following cryopreservation of ovaries prior to implantation. Therefore, in our opinion, this low rate is caused by instable blood flow during organ transplantation. Thus, this study researches a canine ovarian model that focuses on direct exposure of ovaries with blood in an experimentally induced sinus-like cavity. We implanted this tissue on the muscular layer of the stomach, which is its most vascularized region. Materials and Methods: Ovarian transplantation was conducted on T1 animals (n=5), bilateral ovariectomy was performed on T2 animals (n=5), unilateral ovariectomy was conducted on T3 cases and animals in the control-sham group (n=5) did not undergo ovariectomy or transplantation. Results: All isotransplanted ovaries survived. Ovaries resumed follicular growth and revascularization. Transplanted ovaries contained 75%-76% of survived small follicles (pre antral) after 60 days. The ovarian granulosa cells showed considerable resistance against ischemia. After day 30 no statistically significant differences in the level of estradiol and progesterone were observed between T1 animals and the T3 group. T1 animals showed considerably high levels of progesterone and estradiol in comparison to T2 cases. Conclusion: This study showed that using blood sinus method for ovarian isotransplantation helps ovarian tissue to survive from post implantation ischemia which confirms with normal follicles presentation and intact endocrine function of the implanted ovaries. Abstract: Prostate cancer has the highest prevalence of any non-cutaneous cancer in the human body and essentially all men with circulating androgens will develop microscopic prostate cancer if they live long enough. Aging, considered as an impairment of body functions over time, caused by the accumulation of molecular damage in DNA, proteins and lipids, is also characterized by an increase in intracellular oxidative stress due to the progressive decrease of the intracellular ROS scavenging. The aging damage may eventually appear in age-related health issues, which have a significant impact on the independence, general well-being and morbidity of the elderly. The association of aging with prostate cancer is undisputable as well as the association of aging with oxidative stress. Nevertheless, supportive evidence linking an increase in oxidative stress with prostate cancer is still scarce. This review is a comprehensive, literature-based analysis of the association of human prostate cancer with oxidative stress. The objective was to examine the involvement of reactive oxygen species in the mechanisms of prostatic carcinogenesis since the understanding of risk factors for prostate cancer has practical importance for public health, genetic and nutritional education, and chemoprevention. Abstract: Testosterone (TES; 4-androstene-17β-ol-3-on) is found for the first time to eject electrons from its singlet excited state in water–ethanol solvent mixture. This ability was very recently also observed for 17β-estradiol (17βE2) and progesterone (PRG)/1/. With increasing TES-concentration, the yield of solvated electrons () is decreasing, because of “associate” formation. At higher absorbed UV-doses (λ =254nm) the yield is passing a sharp maximum by formation of TES–ethanol adducts, which are able likewise to emit electrons when excited. At prolonged irradiation the resulting photolytic products of TES–ethanol adducts are also able to emit electrons. The capability of the hormones: 17βE2, PRG and TES to eject electrons and the resulting metabolites, some of which can induce cancer, is discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Complex neuroendocrine mechanisms regulating the immune response can be recognized in all autoimmune diseases. Such mechanisms develop through endocrine loops and feedback all process along the hypothalamus—pituitary—gonands axis and the hypothalamus—pituitary—adrenal gland axis. Females are not only more susceptible to autoimmune diseases, but are also more exposed to relevant variations of hormonal levels that physiologically go along with women's life. This paper reviews female-specific issues in multiple sclerosis and how treatments must be considered accordingly. Sexual males of Volvox carteri Stein f. nagariensis Iyengar secrete a hormone which induces sexual rather than asexual development in the next generation. Male recombinants from the original strains isolated from Japan showed an increase in potency of up to 100 times that of the original male clone, with later descendants showing potencies ranging from 100 times to 1/1000 the potency of this male. Potency is defined as the extent to which the hormone produced in 1 ml of medium by one parental spheroid containing 16 male spheroids can be diluted and retain its capacity to induce sexual differentiation. This is recorded as the percent of female response in the tube of limiting dilution, asexual females of the normal female strain being used as assay inoculum in a 1 in 10 dilution series of samples of male fluid containing the sexual hormone. Investigation of the genetic basis of potency in this species included selection of high and low potency male clones and crossing with sib females or backcrossing with the original female. Results of the various crosses are interpreted as: a multigenic system not linked with sex, with more than one genotypic class per dilution level and with more than one genotypic class per apparent phenotypic class. Hormonal abnormality in experimental varicocele induced by partial ligation of left renal vein and the effect of thymosin (fraction 5) on the secretion of the sexual Hormone were studied in rats. Serum testosterone level was lowered after varicocele formation, but could be reversed or increased by intraperitoneal administration of thymosin 5 mg/rat twice a week for 4 weeks with concomitant increase of testicular testosterone content. Changes in FSH and LH both in serum and testis, determined with immunoassay meihod as that of testosterone, were insignificant as compared with control or thymosin treated groups. Crassostrea gigas Thunberg and other oysters have been traditionally used in China as folk remedies to invigorate the kidney and as natural aphrodisiacs to combat male impotence. Erectile dysfunction (ED) has become a major health problem for the global ageing population. The aim of this study is therefore to evaluate the effect of peptide-rich preparations from C. gigas oysters on ED and related conditions as increasing evidence suggests that peptides are important bioactive components of marine remedies and seafood. Crassostrea oyster peptide (COP) preparations COP1, COP2 and COP3 were obtained from C. gigas oysters by trypsin, papain or sequential trypsin-papain digestion, respectively. The contents of testosterone, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and nitric oxide (NO) and the activity of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in mice and/or cells were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Real-time PCR was used to assess the expression of genes associated with sex hormone secretion pathways. The model animal Caenorhabditis elegans was also used to analyze the gene expression of a conserved steroidogenic enzyme. In silico analysis of constituent peptides was performed using bioinformatic tools based on public databases. The peptide-rich preparation COP3, in which >95% peptides were <3000 Da, was found to increase the contents of male mouse serum testosterone and cAMP, both of which are known to play important roles in erectile function, and to increase the activity of mouse penile NOS, which is closely associated with ED. Further investigation using mouse Leydig-derived TM3 cells demonstrates that COP3 was able to stimulate the production of testosterone as well as NO, a pivotal mediator of penile erection. Real-time PCR analysis reveals that COP3 up-regulated the expression of Areg and Acvr2b , the genes known to promote sex hormone secretion, but not Fst , a gene involved in suppressing follicle-stimulating hormone release. Furthermore, COP3 was also shown to up-regulate the expression of let-767 , a well-conserved C. elegans gene encoding a protein homologous to human 17-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases. Preliminary bioinformatic analysis using the peptide sequences in COP3 cryptome identified 19 prospective motifs, each of which occurred in more than 10 peptides. In this paper, Crassostrea oyster peptides were prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis and were found for the first time to increase ED-associated biochemical as well as molecular biology parameters. These results may help to explain the ethnopharmacological use of oysters and provide an important insight into the potentials of oyster peptides in overcoming ED-related health issues.
