The multiple problems that the planet is currently experiencing—climate crisis, conventional and unconventional wars, planetary disenchantment with political systems, growth of inequality, increase in all kinds of intersectional violence, destructuring of the political economy of morality, etc.—are not a favorable scenario for thinking about hope. This paper nevertheless offers a summary presentation of the sociology of hope, presenting some of its central sources and components as well as a proposed study agenda for the future. This article seeks to foster discussion of what could be the central axes of a sociology of hope. To achieve this purpose, the following argumentative strategy was chosen: (a) the "place" of hope is explored in some classics of sociology, (b) the central components of a sociological investigation of hope are synthesized, and (c) an agenda is presented as a summary for a future development of a sociology of hope. The article seeks to draw attention to the urgency of hope as an important element for the future of sociology and social sciences in the twenty-first century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article critically reflects upon the production and reproduction of the formations of otherness in Argentina from the emergence of the Nation-State to the present day, highlighting the tensions and transformations that have converged in the category “black,” which is defined as the privileged locus of the processes of the sub-alternization. The documentary analysis carried out enabled, firstly, the systematization of some strategies of “invisibility” of the Afro-descendant population on a national level. Secondly, the article studies, from the Sociology of Bodies and Emotions, the process of “negrification” of otherness as part of the politics of sensibilities and reflects upon the “politics of the gaze” as an essential analytical key to observe current practices of racialization. Finally, the conclusion suggests that since the 19th Century Argentina has witnessed a constant and complex process of the racialization of otherness that, coupled with class, has defined “superfluous humanities” concerning the extinction of blackness, first, and its widespread subalternization, second, reproducing the pattern of colonial dominion and exploitation even well into the 21st Century. This movement introduces the ethos of the collective project: its conceptual and practical preoccupations. It focuses on our concern with urban processes on the cusp of change, in the midst of being re‐arranged, and thus homes in on the various polyrhythms of intersections, how things come together and diverge, how possibilities open and close in urban contexts of continuously shifting horizons. This final movement explores whether thinking with re‐arrangements can help us account for that which is hidden, unseen or nested in the recesses and folds of urban practices. And if so, how we might then talk about and account for elusive parts of an arrangement that both exert an influence and are influenced. The fourth movement explores the temporal relationship between arrangements and re‐arrangements, addressing the question of how an obdurate and 'sticky' temporal order may give way to palpable re‐arrangement of the ways in which subjects experience time. Eschewing a concern with linear homogenous time, it addresses the processes of re‐arrangement by understanding the dynamics of grave events, hauntings of the past, subtly changing rhythms of everyday life, and the force of potential futures in synchrony. The third movement explores how (re)arrangements are made and re‐worked as people navigate fractured, ever‐shifting landscapes of urban opportunity, conflict and uncertainty. Drawing on fieldwork in Paris, Mogadishu and Abidjan, we point to the fragile, collective and anticipatory knowledges accumulated during navigations, and to how these knowledges become contained within and (re)constitute embodied archives. The second movement considers (re)arrangements as projects of formalization that seek to impose and even fix a form to spaces historically constructed as marginal. From the perspective of revolutions, utopias and/or optimism, the logic of transforming the future has been one of the axes at the beginning of the social sciences of the 19th and 20th centuries. If hope is understood as a practice of anticipating the future, in the sense that Ernest Bloch gave it, it is easy to see how these actions that perform and "pre-form" the connection between past, present and future acquire a special interest for sociology. In this article, we will take as a platform for reflection the thought of Harriet Martineau (1802–1876) and Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935). The two, from different perspectives, thematize hope as an emotion, social practice and behaviour pattern, which offers an unbeatable possibility for reflection on hope today. The objective of the article is to reconstruct the notion of hope from the perspective of the women who originated sociological theory, taking up the thought of the aforementioned authors and presenting some central topics needed to build a sociology of hope. To achieve this objective, the following argumentative strategy has been followed: (a) it is established what constitutes a sociological 'classic', and in what sense Martineau and Perkin Gilman are such; (b) hope according to Harriet Martineau is presented; (c) the concept of Hope according to Charlotte Perkins Gilman is synthetized, (d) some clues for sociology of hope are developed, based on the thoughts of Martineau and Perkins Gilman; and (e) some notes for a sociology of hope are summarized. This study has as its theme, leisure activities performed by students of the São José Institute, founded in Canoas, RS, in religious celebrations between 1908-1920. The problems that guided the research were: What was the conception that the brothers had about leisure? Why offer activities in the midst of religious celebrations? What type of leisure activities were presented to the inmates of the São José Institute? We started from the premise that a school, if it is seen both internally and externally and, in this case, through festivities, shows a social group in its environment, affirming itself as a quality school institution, therefore, seeking recognition of its effectiveness and excellence. By problematizing the relationship between leisure and school, we demonstrate that the Brothers, besides easing the tensions to which the boarders were subjected, also offered, at those moments, possibilities of formation beyond the curricular matrix. The leisure time experienced by the boys went from games to soccer, adding different ways to educate the sensibility, from theater, music and shared experiences also in games and collective games. En este trabajo investigamos la relación entre arte, muerte y sensibilidades. En concreto, nos centraremos en una corriente estética particular, denominada “arte abyecto”. Su singularidad está ligada a los recursos expresivos-compositivos (fluidos corporales, cuerpos en descomposición, etc.) y a las reacciones corporales y emocionales (escalofríos, horror, náuseas, atracción, excitación, etc.). Nuestra hipótesis de partida considera que la vocación perturbadora de este tipo de manifestación y las lógicas de intervención/representación del cuerpo inanimado y sus fluidos pueden explicarse en el marco de la “política de los sentidos” vigente (Scribano, 2015). De acuerdo con ello, se observarían parámetros de aceptabilidad respecto a lo que se puede ver, oler, degustar, tocar, ver, oír y lo que no, respecto de la muerte representada.

The article addresses methodological issues in diaconia research by picking up some fundamental insights from phenomenology, especially the traditions from Sara Ahmed and Bernhard Waldenfels. By presenting recent diaconia research the author claims that the phenomenological conception of the human as always a humanbeing- in-the-world should be taken as a basic human conception also in diaconia research. Phenomenology analyzes human beings as related philosophically, not theologically. However, presenting different kinds of human relations as a basic part of what diaconia is about, diaconia research will be able to discuss what the author calls a concept of a generous Christianity.

In this essay, we elucidate the insufficiency of a simple binary choice between substantialism and relationalism or between dualist and nondual/incarnational sensibilities. We highlight the ways that all translations of these sensibilities into the scholarly form of life encounter characteristic problems and challenges precisely because the very practice of scholarly writing is always and already inclined towards a more dualist way of going on. Since the implementation of preventive and compulsory social isolation, every night at 9:00 p.m. thousands of Argentines applaud the health system personnel from their patios, balconies and windows in support of their daily tasks.The purpose of this article is to present a critical analysis of the applause that the Argentine population offers as an emotional support for workers in the health sector in times of Covid-19. To achieve this objective, the following argumentative strategy is followed: a) the relationship between heroes and spectators in a spectacularized society is described; b) second, a series of videos of different cities with structural diversity (social class, scale) from the virtual ethnography will be analysed; c) third, applause as an emotion is analysed according to the contexts of its production from the perspective of the sociology of bodies/emotions. Finally, the paper concludes with some questions about the relationship between public health and sensibilities in the post-Covid-19 era.

In China, one cannot sleep a wink at night. This complaint runs throughout the nineteenth century, through travelers’ stories and settlements’ newspapers, doctors strive to find its anthropological roots in the lesser sensitivity of Chinese people to noise, and it motivates, finally, various projects to ban noise pollution and exclude the Chinese inhabitants of foreign settlements. The reason lies in the fear of Chinese climate effects, the desire to base the inferiority of the Chinese on racial differences, and plans to westernize China.

Recent scholarship in the sociological subfields of culture and immigration offers several promising directions for studying how people experience the world in embodied ways and move through and across boundaries. Yet, the lack of overlap between fields has left numerous theoretical angles unexplored. In this review, I consider the limited existing scholarship at the intersection of migration and the senses. I discuss literature on the role of sensation during three critical moments of migration: movement, encounter, and return. These moments highlight the sensorially dislocating nature of travel, the felt politics of inclusion and exclusion, and the transporting power of embodied memories. These works dive deep into the everyday realities of bodies on the move that public and academic discourse has previously ignored. I conclude by briefly outlining exciting new directions to expand work connecting migration and the senses and suggest that we begin to explore globalized migrant sensibilities. This article addresses some questions about the history of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Through a number of articles published in the journal Correio do Estado, printed since the 1950’s, we will try to recover some everyday aspects of everyday life in this city, emphasizing the approaches which describe a part of the establishment and the existing commercial activities in Campo Grande from 1960 to 1970.
