- Abstract
The presence of men as Make Up Artists (MUAs) is often viewed negatively in Indonesian society, which tends to associate this profession with women. This study aims to analyze the representation of Bubah Alfian's masculinity as an MUA through his Instagram account. The research employs Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) methodology to analyze 25 video reels uploaded by Bubah Alfian. Data collection techniques involve in-depth observation and textual and visual analysis of the video reels. The results show that Bubah Alfian successfully combines masculine and feminine elements in his identity as an MUA, challenging traditional gender stereotypes. These findings suggest that masculinity can be expressed more fluidly and flexibly through social media, particularly in professions typically associated with women. Additionally, the representation of masculinity displayed by Bubah Alfian offers new perspectives on how men in the beauty profession can leverage social media to craft a unique and authentic gender identity. This research makes significant contributions to the field of communication studies, particularly in the study of gender representation on social media, and demonstrates how social media can be used as a tool for social change. - Abstract
Iban communities have the traditional beliefs that serve as their guide in daily life. Every occurrence in their environment is believed as a bird / ‘burung’ or a sign that needs to be interpreted to know its connotation. Among the beliefs that the Iban community is constantly concerned, emphasis is shown to the interpretation of signs that appear in dreams. In this study, the Semiotic Theory of Charles Sander Peirce was used as the basis for studying the signs manifesting in a dream. Using this theory, the existing signs will be interpreted as specific omens based on the beliefs of the Iban community. This study focuses on the classification of dreams based on the signs that exist. This research also aims to make sense of the dreams and its function in Iban society. The findings showed that the Ibanese community have their own interpretation of the signs that commonly appear in dreams. These interpretations are important elements in determining the classification of a dream. In this study, dreams in the Iban people are categorised into happy dreams (mimpi gaga), nightmares (mimpi changka), dreams of longevity (mimpi gayu), dreams of anger (mimpi ringat), dreams of brevity (mimpi pandak umur), dreams of helping deities (mimpi ditulung antu) and also the dream of mourning (mimpi ngulit). These classifications are very important because these interpretations are believed to be true by the Ibanese community as a medium of spiritual communication whereby the beliefs are a must to follow in order to ensure the well-being of their community.

- Abstract
Film is actually a text that presents social reality. The text contained in a film forms a meaning while reflecting a particular culture. The message conveyed in the film can be informative and as an educational medium for the audience, the message to introduce a culture, build a democratic society and the film can also unite differences and construct social realities that occur in society. The author in this study saw the difference in the meaning of pluralism in the film "Raya and The Last Dragon". That there is a fact that a film can carry out the function of improving people's lives with its storyline with the diversity that exists and the characteristics of the differences depicted in the film. This research aims to find out various meanings in terms of designation, implications and myths contained in the film "Raya and the Last Dragon". The writing in this study uses the constructivist paradigm to conduct semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes and this research uses qualitative research methods to understand various meanings in the film "Raya and the Last Dragon". Based on the results of research and discussion, it can be said that this film shows the meaning of pluralism that is understood democratically, equality of differences. The differences that are denotatively described have connotations associated with differences that are constructed into an equation. The film depicts togetherness and unity in a difference, so a myth arises that describes the shift in meaning from plurality, namely a strength and unity formed from a difference and diversity that exists.

- Abstract
The Aya Sofya Mosque is one of the historic mosques located in the city of Istanbul which was formerly known as Constantinople. Before becoming a mosque, Aya Sofya was the largest cathedral in the world that functioned as a center of religious, political, dan artistic life during the Byzantine empire. The history and events surrounding this mosque are recorded in a poem entitled “Masjidu Ayā Ṣūfyā” by Ahmad Syauqi which is published in the poetry anthology AsySyauqiyyat. The purpose of this research is to reveal the history of Aya Sofya through literary works. This research uses semiotic theory, which is a theory that examines the meaning of signs. In analyzing poetry, this research uses the semiotic method written by Michael Riffaterre, namely the indirectness of expressions and semiotic readings, which consists of Heuristic and Hermeneutic readings. The results of this research show that the poem Masjidu Ayā Ṣūfyā contains the history and architectural form of the Aya Sofya building, which experiences a change in function from a church to a mosque as the result of the change in power from the Eastern Roman Empire to the Ottoman Empire.

SIGNS & symbols , *CONSUMERISM , *LOCAL delivery services , *FOOD advertising , *SEMIOTICS , *CRITICAL thinking - Abstract
Semiotics is a science related to the interpretation of meaning concerning the nature of linguistic symbols. It is essential to mastery semiotics to comprehend the usage of "signs" that in the human mind, these signs are derived from human culture as they have ability to convey meaning in all social and cultural aspects. Hence, consumer viewpoint can easily be influenced by the elements in the advertisement. Unfortunately, on some occasions the image or tagline can lead consumers to a wrong interpretation which eventually causes problem to them and society at large. Inevitably, consumers are encouraged to comprehend the function of semiotics to facilitate them to understand and interpret the advertisement precisely, and correctly. Thus, the research aims at highlighting meanings of the signs and symbols embedded in advertisements of food delivery apps, as well as to elucidate the semiotic function of them. The research employs semiotic analysis framework as a tool in interpreting and analysing the signs, icons, symbols, and their meanings. The Charles Sanders Pierce’s framework is adopted to analyse the collected data. Pursuant to the process, the commonly used food delivery applications in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, namely: wsselksa, appmrsool and hungerstation applications are selected to extract the samplings for the analysis. The selection of these apps is based on the similarities of icons and symbols used in them. Hence, the aspects of representations, subject matters, and interpretations of the data will be analysed. As a result, the relationship between these three aspects will lead to the process of interpreting meanings of the analysed signs and symbols. As such, interpreter's understanding of the signs and symbols is very essential in determining and interpreting the meaning. Furthermore, interpreter ability and knowledge including critical thinking skills and understanding of social life and local culture of consumers will facilitate the interpretation process. Withstanding the function of semiotics as an infinite concept, it requires complex cognitive process, impression, reasoning, and learning as well as it commissions special attention to produce accurate and logical interpretation.

Kata kunci: identitas, kuliner, tubuh, Tionghoa, gastrokritik, semiotik Abstract Food in the recent era is no longer just a dish, but an intermediary for various interpretations. One of the poets who have used culinary treasures in the world of poetry is Hanna Fransisca. This article reviews selected poems by Hanna Fransisca entitled "Bakpao Tionghoa", "Kambing Guling", and "Tumis Paru". This research examines culinary in poetry through a gastro-critical perspective using the semiotic method of Rolland Barthes. This research attempts to reveal the culinary meaning in the three poems. The results showed that the culinary in the poetry "Bakpao Tionghoa", "Kambing Guling", and "Tumis Paru" shows body problems. Bakpao and Kambing guling become a medium for body narration which does not have the authority in social space. The body, through bakpao, is to be positioned as a consumptive object. Meanwhile, the body in “Kambing Guling” is present as a body in territorial space which tends to restrain freedom as a subject. “Tumis Paru” becomes a medium for narrating the body that has been freed from physical prison. In terms of identity, the three poems narrate a Chinese identity that is identical with bright skin and exists in stereotypical spaces. The culinary in the three poems is a medium of criticism, protest, and satire against colonial heritage practices that differentiate status and identity. Keywords: identity, culinary, body, Tionghoa, gastrocritics, semiotics

In this paper, I aim to retrieve insights from the philosophy of the polymath Charles Sanders Peirce, which he referred to as pragmaticism. What Peirce is perhaps best known as is being the father of pragmatism. In order to differentiate his project from other thinkers such as William James and John Dewey, who likewise referred to their projects as pragmatism, he renamed his pragmatism to pragmaticism.Peirce's pragmaticism has much to offer theologians, especially concerning theological method. I demonstrate this claim by showing the usefulness of three of Peirce's pragmaticist concepts. The first section of this paper briefly explicates the foundational concepts of pragmaticism, which are the pragmatic(ist) maxim, the semiotic nature of understanding, and fallibilism. The second section of this paper provides a sketch of the benefits these three concepts have for theological method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
From the perspective that it is one and the same picture that is changing, this essay includes semiotic analyses of Lynn Curlee´s painting Smoking angels, made in 1979, the photograph from 1928 wich inspired the artist, as well as Black Sabbath´s album cover Heaven and Hell, that was first released in 1980. Although the forms of the pictures are different the motif is quite the same, yet, what the pictures convey is different. The analysis will be based mainly by the use of two theories: Hans Belting opines that a picture can not exist on its own, that "the what" of an image is steered by "the how" in wich it transmits its message. The medium that is used and the physical form are the messengers but the picture happens where it is manifested. Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz´s theory implies that to understand what a picture means we need to study the context and culture that is prevailing where the picture is shown. How the picture is received in its different forms and what the factors are that play a part in this, is the main focus in this essay.

What happens in man when the society you live in disappear? Howis the individual affected when large external forces changes the life conditions? In northern Sweden, the societies Kiruna and Malmberget move due to the mining. The project started in Malmberget but soon got a wider perspective. Societies will continue to disappear which is already seen in Ukraine and parts of the world where climate change is a fact. Lost my home is an exploration in how emoticons and graphic design can be a help for people to communicate. Emoticons is built on feelings and is a language we all understand no matter which countries we are from. 44. Peace-washing : The pacifization of the Swedish arms export

- Abstract
Sweden’s role internationally is often cited as a paradox which is argued to have its origin in the opposition between the state’s international humanitarianism and its large arms export. The tension here has often been examined from the perspectives of militarization in research on the subject. This thesis instead argued that a comprehensive understanding of peace is needed to analyze the paradox holistically. By semiotically engaging with the Swedish Government's annual reports on arms export control, this thesis could identify the construction of peace within the arms export during the years 2014-2021. A usage of the combined perspectives of pacifization, militarization and an in-depth review of the peace concept, allowed for a comprehensive understanding of peace within these discourses. The thesis discovered that elements of the Swedish arms export were framed as (1) a precondition for peace, (2) an agreement of peace, and (3) an enhancement of peace. Moreover, the material revealed the juxtaposition of two different versions of peace, one liberal and one emancipatory understanding. As these versions are associated with different values and practices of peace, their coexistence in Swedish arms export is argued to be the heart of Sweden’s foreign policy paradox.

- Abstract
Since its conception, hip hop has assumed an increasingly important role in today's media society. Today, many swedish hip hop artists often find themselves at the intersection of bottom-up and top-down representations. Despite the genre's many positive features of self-expression and social reflection, artists are constantly faced with a complex challenge. Hip hop artists must constantly navigate prejudice, stereotypes, and sometimes one-sided media representations while trying to convey their voices and perspectives. Through a case study of five Instagram images each of five different Swedish rap artists, a total of 25 images (Yasin, Asme, ADAAM, Z.E and Silvana Imam), a thematic content analysis and a social semiotic analysis, this study aims to investigate and analyze bottom-up representations of Swedish rap artists in social media. The study also aims to contribute to the discussion and problematization of whether, and if so how, rap artists themselves can challenge or reproduce prevailing top-down representations of them. The theoretical framework consists of representation, social semiotics, active choice theory, multimodality, intersectionality and norms. The empirical material has been interpreted and analyzed through the theoretical framework along with a denotative and connotative analysis and the analysis categories camera angle, poses and attributes in order to uncover the underlying meanings of the empirical material. The analysis suggests four identified themes in the empirical material which are power and status, glamorous and exclusive lifestyle, criminality and intimacy. The analysis shows that rap artists use different types of semiotic resources to emphasize and represent different aspects of themselves. For example, camera angles are used in a frog’s-eye view to represent the artists as authoritarian and rich of status, which is linked to norms of status. Expensive and exclusive designer clothes are used to give the appearance of a glamorous and

- Abstract
English abstract: This thesis explores the city branding of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. The report takes a point of departure by focusing on the tourism organisation Wonderful Copenhagen’s strategy and their communication on Instagram under the sub-brand name VisitCopenhagen. The research aims to investigate the strategy behind Wonderful Copenhagen’s brand story where they encourage tourists to be temporary locals and how this strategy is perceived by tourists. Firstly, two semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain insights into the branding strategy. Secondly a content analysis was made by gathering and categorising a sample of pictures from VisitCopenhagen’s Instagram profile. It reveals that the aim is to showcase images of people behaving as locals. Most of the Instagram posts are recommendations for specific places, reflecting a user-oriented approach that meets tourists' needs for inspiration and concrete suggestions. Furthermore, a social semiotic analysis of selected images examines the relationship between the pictures and the viewer, focusing on how different types of gazes and photographic techniques affect the viewer. Additionally the strategy of VisitCopenhagen’s Instagram has been analysed, demonstrating that the communication is predominantly user-oriented. It also discusses the use of user-generated content and its potential to enhance authenticity. Finally, an online questionnaire survey was conducted. It was sent out to previous visitors of Copenhagen, to gain insights into their experiences of the city. The survey covered both the brand story “Don’t just come here. Become here” and the perception of Instagram pictures. The survey results indicated that the majority of respondents understood the brand story outlined. Conclusively, this thesis has shown that Wonderful Copenhagen aims for Copenhagen to appear authentic and unpretentious. This branding partially aligns with the tourists' experiences, though there is room for impro

- Abstract
This study focuses on how taste can be perceived visually between two families in the first season of Netflix’s Bridgerton (2020) with a focus on costume, color and taste. Through the use of qualitative, comparative and semiotic methods, taken from a contemporary Western perspective, screenshots from two separate scenes will be analyzed to examine how the families convey a difference in taste and class based on theory by; Beverley Skeggs, Maria Sturken & Lisa Cartwright, Pierre Bourdieu and Gunther Kress & Theo Van Leeuwen. The results convey that taste and class is perceived depending on how the families’ costumes, focusing on color and fabric, work together with each other. One family shows a consistent use of color and fabric that portray a sense of unity, while the other family focuses on displaying individuality and personality traits through their costumes. Additionally, visual parallels are drawn between Bridgerton and the 2015 adaptation of Cinderella, particularly in how the costumes of Cinderella and her stepfamily may subconsciously influence the audience's interpretation of the characters in Bridgerton. This paper includes a design documentation after page 38 with the name “Mångfald i illustrationer” that is a fictional project in the form of an image bank for the organization Bris. The purpose was to create new illustrations for their website under the section "Vanliga ämnen" that were relatable to the target audience; teenagers between the ages of 13-18. The result is twelve illustrations that can be used in various ways in relation to the section "Vanliga ämnen", that feel inviting and contemporary for the target audience.

- Abstract
This essay examines how ethics washing, the use of ethical rhetoric in the IT industry, takesform in the visual medium by analyzing leading AI corporation OpenAI ́s website.By first giving a background in the pitfalls of developing and creating ethical AI, this essaycontinues by looking at how visual symbols can be means of greenwashing in communication,as well as presenting the framework of ethicswashing by Peter Seele and Mario D. Schultz. Inmy semiotic analysis I look at the timeframe of the OpenAI website from non-profit startup2018– to global actor and capped profit corporation of april 2024. The results show that manyof the visual strategies used by OpenAI are connected to key points on ethicswashing. There isstill a need for broader research into these themes to truly confirm results. At the end I discussthe use of ethicswashing to avoid regulation and that in order to be truly safe and ethical thecorporation also needs to focus on the consequences of how the tool is made.

- Abstract
In this thesis, the hugely popular online art experiment r/Place is analyzed as an interesting example of digital art making and collaborative creation on a massive scale. This is done in an effort to contribute to the exploration of how art making and the artist’s role is shaped by a digital component as well as its accompanying opportunities, in this case collaboration. In the analysis the creations and participation of ten Reddit-communities taking part in the experiment are studied through the lens of semiotics and performativity. Through the analysis it was concluded that the art-making and resulting creations were not only shaped by the digital and shared nature of the format but also by the limited resources available, resulting in a strongly competitive atmosphere. The competitiveness highlights how two concepts often seen as opposites, creation and destruction, can be two sides of the same process depending on your perspective.
