- Abstract
This article proposes a semiotic analysis of the feminist Street art provided by the Spanish artist BToy and the Chilean artist Isonauta, putting the focus on their ability to express themselves in the streets, to make women visible and to pose a coherent imaginary that allows them to dialogue with the observer. In the context of several social movements that have contributed to strengthen feminist networks, both globally and locally, since 2018, their works expose messages with clear symbols that reinforce the social identity of women, develop a powerful iconographic memory and allow to contemplate new feminist perspectives in their societies. This article uses figured worlds to explore the limit-situations imposed by dominant narratives of home-school relationships. Through a semiotic analysis of a wall hanging in a preschool classroom, we explore what figured worlds are imagined as possible for home-school relationships. The dominant narratives implicit in these figured worlds ossify configurations of home and school that privilege ways of being and knowing that exclude, reject, or demonize the experiences of culturally, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse families. Individuals psychologically process their experiences while involved in dialogue in daily situations. In psychotherapeutic sessions, we can appreciate the ongoing process of constructing meaning when focusing on a microgenetic level during the exchange of child and therapist. We examine an excerpt from a therapeutic process with a sexually abused child from a socio-genetic perspective, with a focus on the display of semiotic fields, meaning growth and balancing tension and as a mean to deal with the painful consequences. Self-regulatory mechanisms are displayed in dialogical chains, providing insight into processing strategies to cope with a traumatic experience. Ambivalence and tension are essential to elaborate new meanings as well as a therapist willing to accompany the child. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of semiotics is closely related to the reader’s interpretation of the text. Narrative is our fundamental means of comprehension and expression for this time-locked condition. Any semiological system is a system of meanings, but the consumer of myths takes meaning for a system of facts. The purpose of this study is to use R. Barthe’s semiotic analysis to study the process of news consumption that causes negative perceptions of government policies by recipients. The research concept uses critical media theories to view news with negative connotations as leading to panic, making people more marginalized in meeting their daily needs. According to R. Barthes, all cultural phenomena, like types of communication, are encoded in sign systems, which are the product of myth-making activity, where any culturally significant phenomenon is a speech utterance that is the carrier of a mythical message. The subject of the study is an emergent discourse in which there is a “meaning effect” for Indonesian audiences located on dozens of islands, affecting their core interests. Previous studies support this research. The unit of analysis is news regarding the policy of increasing gasoline prices in the largest Muslim country with 300 million population in the both national and local media in 2022-2023. The results of Barthes’ semiotic analysis of the signifier show that people are becoming more marginalized as the results of increasing petrol price policy. Signified without the approval of the people’s representative institutions, petrol prices continued to increase. The denotative sign for policy makers to increase gasoline directly increases the price of gasoline, which makes it more difficult for people to engage in economic activities. The connotative signifier in the title and content of the news has a very detrimental effect on people when purchasing petrol. The connotative sign means that the news can annoy the people because of the increase in petrol prices to run their economy. On the other side the government’s advice is to listen to institutions like media that represent the people and get involved in units that communicate directly with the people.

This article deals with the production of meanings around the right triangle during the resolution of a construction problem with GeoGebra, by pre-service mathematics teachers. Assuming a multimodal perspective of learning, we analyze the semiotic activity of the participants, from four categories that emphasize the semiotic and embodied nature of thinking in geometry. We conclude that the explanation of a construction procedure with GeoGebra is linked to the understanding of the geometric object to be built, due to the workspace used and the teacher educator plays an important role for achieving this understanding. Bishop Adam Lepa (1939–2022) is a precursor of religious media education in Poland. His scientific works are part of the trend known around the world as faith-based media literacy education. In the years 2024–2027, we are implementing a research grant regarding the scientific achievements of Bishop Adam Lepa. Documentation work on his achievements in the field of media pedagogy is ongoing, hence this article can be described as a research communique. At this stage of research, four problem areas of his scientific achievements were identified: religious media pedagogy, image and word in audiovisual culture, media propaganda and manipulation, presence and image of the Catholic Church in the media in Poland. He proposed an original theory of axiologically oriented environmental media pedagogy. The subject of the analysis in the article will be his media education program. We will indicate its main goals, means and methods, primarily based on his pioneering textbook, Pedagogy of Mass Media from 2000. We will also consider how this media education program has a religious character. Bishop Adam Lepa was more of a practitioner in the field of media education than a theorist. His research goes beyond empirical studies, encompassing significant media concepts. Despite the shifts in technology and society, these concepts continue to hold their validity.

In today's consumer society, the promotion and marketing of products is no longer just for necessity. With the development of information and communication technologies, images have surrounded people. In line with these images, invisible messages are imposed on people's subconscious in advertising messages. At this point, the semiotic analysis method makes these hidden messages visible. In this study, two different advertisement designs featuring militancy and male representation have been analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic method, determining which myths are reproduced by these advertisements. It examines how selected Tabasco hot sauce and Zwilling knife advertisements use visual media to convey complex messages that influence societal norms and consumer behavior through the purposive sampling method. It identifies cultural narratives and ideologies within these ads that not only market their products but also influence societal values. In conclusion, the analyzed advertisement designs have been found to reproduce myths of a patriarchal society, heroism, as well as nationalism and racism. The analysis highlights the need for ethical advertising practices that support inclusivity and societal well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors of the article explore the media text of the university site. The discourse of the university site is viewed as an institutional, corporative discourse with a generalized form of the authorship. The subject of the analysis is a scientific expedition's diary. The main objectives of the analysis are to define the key value-charged meanings promoted by the diary's text in the context of the socio-cultural agenda, the main means of those values' conceptualization, and the way the University students perceive these meanings. The authors draw on the semiotic theory of the text, the presentation theory of discourse, and semiotic modelling of discourse. The main methods are semiotic and pragmalinguistic analyses, whereby the key presentemes standing for the dominant values were defined, to prove the findings the authors exploit the quantitative analysis tools. The authors conducted students' interviewing (N=20) with the aim of understanding how the media genre under analysis facilitates students' engagement into the Arctic issues. The results of the interviewing also shed light on the students' perception of the Arctic. The findings show how the media texts addresser's intentions have been implemented. The authors came to the conclusion that playful reinterpretation of reality as the leading model of reflecting the world secured by a number of communicative tactics, mainly tonality change help achieve the main goal of the media texts' addresser - to promote key values through informing, enlightening, and entertaining. Crucial components of strategic communication include the audience, which plays a decisive role in how any conflict plays out. Strategic narratives are seen as means by which political actors attempt to construct a shared meaning of international politics to shape the behaviour of domestic and international actors. The article analyzes the news discourse of the Russian media sources RT, Pervyj Kanal, and NTV on Russia's coronavirus aid to Italy in spring 2020. In the context of media coverage, some methodological questions arise: How should the intentional structuring of narratives, targeting of audiences, and the manipulative intentions of the strategic actor be studied? For this purpose, the article combines strategic narrative theory with Umberto Eco's concepts of the Model Reader and the Model Author. Analysing the aims and intentionality of the strategic narratives, we postulate the Model Reader as an analytical category that organizes the study of the audience's interpretation process. The function of the Model Reader is to actualize the codes and intertextual references that the author has strategically planned in the news message, in order to achieve the geopolitical aims of the strategic narratives in question. The analysis of constructing the Model Reader and the Model Author of strategic narratives is complemented by Greimas' semiotic theory of the narrative and the composition principles of Lotman's discrete/non-discrete texts. This study uses the semiotic method to analyze Cahit Zarifoğlu’s (1974) multilayered story İns [Humans]. The story uses the cinematographic technique to form layers of meaning, symbols, and oppositions in an attempt to explain the depicted historical journey of humankind. The study uses the semiotic method to reveal the structure of the story through its basic oppositions, themes, and transformations. The narrative level of the story is analyzed first. Under this heading, the article explains the story’s segmentations, transformations, phases of the narrative schedule, and prototype of the actants. The study then analyzes the story’s discursive level, categorizing the roles of the narrative before providing detailed information about how the narrative uses symbolic references, with the tools of semiotics being used to analyze these usages. The study finishes by analyzing the logico-semantic level. This section states the logico-semantic level of the story to have been formed along the axes of hakîqat [truth] and ghiz [secret]. This axis was shaped by the opposites of meaning and lack of meaning and of being language deprived and not being language deprived. Resolutely, the article states the story to deal with the historical journey of humanity through the use of intense symbolic references, where the attempt has been made to express this process through human beings’ construction of meaning with regard to existence, ultimately along the axes of hakîqat and ghiz. The character İns attains understanding (i.e., wahdat [unity]) by acquiring the ability of language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The widely renowned and exhaustively researched Kashmiri-American diasporic poet, Agha Shahid Ali, has received acclaim for his portrayal of themes such as loss, longing for the homeland, nostalgia, hyphenated identity, hybridity, and dislocation, among others. However, within the purview of new historicism, this paper intends to examine the interplay of literature, culture, and history. Using Clifford Geertz's framework of "thick description," the paper analyzes Agha's poetry as a cultural artifact with ethnographic value. Through a semiotic analysis of select poems based on Bakhtin's notion of chronotopes, the paper aims to unravel themes of fragmented identity, cultural memorialization, and the preservation of imaginary homelands. The paper also attempts to explore that Agha Shahid Ali, actively engaged with the socio-political turmoil in his homeland. He sought to reconcile the tensions between different traditions and religious communities, envisioning a personal utopia rooted in his privileged position. His poetry reflects his historical context, facilitating a symbolic exchange between the fragments of Kashmiri culture. Through intertextual references, religious symbols, and social emblems, Ali constructs a significant and experimental narrative about Kashmir. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The issues facing migrants and fishermen are at the core of Vincenzo Marra's Tornando a casa (Sailing Home) (2002) (Italy) and Rebecca Cremona's Simshar (2014) (Malta). Both films are shot primarily in the southern Mediterranean Sea and, although they feature similar life dramas and hazardous rescues, they are directed according to different aesthetic principles. While Simshar exhibits the highly emotional tones of a tragedy and a predictable ending, Sailing Home uses a prosaic style and offers a ground-breaking denouement. Inspired by a true story, Cremona's film helps reinforce concepts of 'Malteseness' while Marra's negotiates identity concerns, regardless of the protagonist's nationality. The Mediterranean Sea thus becomes the backdrop to unpredictable encounters that allow the promise of new friendships and can even change human destiny. The objective of this article is to draw out an iconographic and thematic comparison between these two films, arguing that they provide deep insight into current tragedies in a documentary-like, yet highly artistic way. Qualitative researchers often work with texts transcribed from social interactions such as interviews, meetings, and presentations. However, how we make sense of such data to generate promising cues for further analysis is rarely discussed. This article proposes mode-enhanced transcription as a tool for sensitizing social interaction data, defined as a process in which researchers attune their attention to the dynamic interplay of verbal and nonverbal features, expressions, and acts when transcribing and proofreading professional transcripts. Two scenarios for using mode-enhanced transcription are introduced: sensitizing previously collected data and engaging with modes purposefully. Their implications for research focus, data collection, and data analysis are discussed based on a demonstration of the process with a previously collected dataset and an illustrative review of published articles that display mode-enhanced excerpts. The article outlines the benefits and further considerations of using mode-enhanced transcription as a sensitizing tool. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Studies examining the digital disruption of diplomacy focus on the micro level of diplomats' working routines. This article investigates the new practice of 'domestic digital diplomacy' to explore interactions between micro- and macro-level disruptions. The practice of domestic digital diplomacy stems from the digital disruption of government ministries that embrace an outward-looking stance. Domestic digital diplomacy also impacts society as diplomats create a prism through which citizens can make sense of their world. Few studies have investigated how ministries of foreign affairs (MFAs) create such a domestic prism. This study addresses this gap by analysing the images shared on Twitter by the British Foreign Office following Brexit. Using Barthes's semiotic approach to image analysis, this study demonstrates that MFAs can use images to shape their citizens' worldviews, values and beliefs. The study concludes that investigating digital disruption in diplomacy requires that scholars focus on interactions between micro- and macro-level disruptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the way people communicate and convey information, particularly in public spaces. This paper investigates the use of language and signs in COVID-19-related directives in Japan from a pragmatic perspective. Using data collected through a linguistic landscape survey, the study qualitatively examines the use of politeness in linguistic formulation and the semiotic use of space through the combination of signs and objects. The analyses reveal the differences in politeness strategies used in top-down signs compared to bottom-up signs. Top-down signs, such as those produced by the government or large organizations, tend to use an invitation form and incomplete sentences, whereas bottom-up signs, created by individuals or small shops, often use more formal language and formulaic request expressions. The study highlights the role of addressers of bottom-up signs as "handlers" who play an active role in pragmatically utilizing space through the arrangement of semiotic signs. The study argues that a detailed linguistic and semiotic analysis is crucial in comprehending how meaning is co-constructed in the linguistic and semiotic landscape. This is particularly relevant in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, where clear and effective communication is of utmost importance in order to maintain public health and safety. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the use of language and signs in public spaces, and have implications for the development of effective communicative strategies in the context of the pandemic and beyond. 37. Semiotics of a Rivalry: Decoding the Musk-Zuckerberg Phenomenon.
- Author

Bozdağ, Ayşe Aslı
- Abstract
This article offers a nuanced examination of the highly anticipated confrontation between tech industry leaders Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, framing it as more than a mere clash of titans but as a cultural spectacle with far-reaching implications. Utilizing a rigorous thematic analysis of public discourse and media narratives from June to August 2023, the study introduces and elaborates on the concept of Technotropism. This term encapsulates the complex, often paradoxical, relationship between technology, societal norms, and power dynamics. The article argues that such high-profile spectacles serve dual roles: they reflect existing societal values and are active agents in shaping new norms and expectations. By drawing on historical parallels, theories of masculinity in tech, ethical considerations, and power dynamics, the article situates the Musk-Zuckerberg confrontation within a broader lineage of culturally significant events. It contends that understanding these spectacles as cultural commodities subject to mass consumption is crucial for a comprehensive grasp of the evolving societal implications of technology. This multi-faceted approach provides a richer understanding of how technology and society are mutually constitutive, influencing and being influenced by each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aims to discover multicultural values using semiotic analysis in an English textbook. This research is qualitative methodology. The sample of this research is an English textbook under the title "Big English 5" used in a private primary school in Indonesia. The data were gathered by documentation of the signs in texts and pictures in that English textbook and were analyzed by using semiotic analysis used Barthes's theory (1977) by integrating various theories to get the multicultural values represented in the English textbook. The findings showed that the texts and pictures represent each multicultural value covered in Big English 5. In addition, the most frequent multicultural value was found about Appreciate Other People's Cultural Products (AOPCP) with eleven items. The other most frequent multicultural value was found about International Cultural (IC) with eleven items. The multicultural values represent in the English textbook in pictures and texts consist of the things, places, foods, and traditions. Unfortunately, the Source Culture (SC) related to Indonesian culture was found merely two items, even though young learners use that English book at a primary school in Indonesia. In conclusion, the English textbook of Big English 5 contained multicultural values which could support young learners' English language process. However, this English textbook needs to add the content of Indonesian culture as the user of that English textbook. Hence, it could acquaint the Indonesian culture through English learning for young learners earlier. Besides, the role of English teachers and students becomes necessary to utilize the English textbook appropriately by designing activities that entangle multicultural values and the use of the English language during the learning process. This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on Jordanians’ beliefs, perceptions, and practices. The selected 26 caricatures and memes were analyzed in terms of their denotative, connotative, and semiotic resources and discussed in light of Barthes’ semiotic theory. The analysis reveals that such cartoonic representations constitute a type of social discourse that reveals several social, health, economic, and political issues on digital platforms and warns people about the negative consequences of this pandemic and how to cope with it. These issues are life and economic disruption, people’s bad psychological state, the unfair hold of the COVID-19 vaccine diffusion, and the world’s fiasco in handling the pandemic. The cartoons and memes also represent effectively, with the help of particular linguistic techniques (i.e., metaphors, intertextuality, and ironic, sarcastic expressions), people’s thoughts and beliefs, real situations, events, personalities, and identities, as well as the whole world, by humorously demonstrating critically shared global issues.

The article presents the results of the interdisciplinary philosophical-sociological study of heroism. In the theoretical introductory part, the authors conducted the semiotic analysis of the concept of heroism in the context of the concept of chronotope in Western-European culture; identified the constants of the Russian semantics of the ‘hero’, ‘heroism’ and ‘heroic’; described the dynamics of changes in the meanings of the ‘heroic’, ‘deed’ and ‘feat’. The sociological approach follows the philosophical understanding of heroism and considers this phenomenon through a social relationship (In N.K. Mikhailovsky’s perspective). To comprehend the relationship between the hero and the crowd, the authors refer to such sociological approaches as creative and relational theories of social action and P. Donati’s relational sociology. The empirical part presents the results of the sociological survey of 1,350 Russians from different generations in eight federal districts; thus, the authors consider the concepts of hero and heroism as representations of collective (historical) memory. The empirical study consisted of two parts: the first one focused on the collective memory of Russians and their historical knowledge, the second one - on heroes and heroism in the interpretation of the Soviet and post-Soviet generations. The results of the first part show the general weakening of collective memory, and the events of older history are less interesting and less known than, for example, those of the Soviet period. Most of the significant events in the Russian history are perceived as triumphant, not as traumatic, and most military campaigns, including the current ones, are perceived through the figure of the winner, not the loser. Respondents believe that there was more heroism in the past. Heroism is associated with such personal qualities as strength, activity, a sense of duty, desire to save others not for profit, the ability not to give up even in the most difficult situation. The hero is perceived not only as a savior, but also as a truth-seeker, which is especially significant for Soviet generations.

The pandemic called Covid 19, which emerged in the last period of 2019, turned into a chaos that affected the whole world physically and psychologically. The pandemic period caused people's habits and communication styles to change. It has become a way of life for people to be unable to leave their homes due to restrictions. This situation has also caused a change in the way global brands reach consumers and the content of their advertising messages. In this study, two commercials prepared by the Coca Cola brand during the period when the effects of the pandemic were felt intensely and the effects of the pandemic were relatively alleviated were analyzed by semiotic analysis method. In this research, it is aimed to reveal how and for what purpose an international brand gives messages on a global scale in its advertisements, which intercultural codes it brings to the fore, to reveal the messages behind the visible messages and which elements in mass communication and for what purpose they are effective on people. The findings of the analysis carried out in the context of signifier-signified, denotation-connotation in the research overlap with the theoretical foundations of semiotics.

This research aims to analyze the symbolic meaning and religius values contained in the “Batammat Kaji” ritual and how these values are communicated through symbols and ritual interactions. This research uses a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis methods. Data was obtained through observation, in-depth interviews and documentation studies. The research results revealed that the “Batammat Kaji” ritual contains symbols that represent the teachings of the Islamic religion and the beliefs of the local Malay community. The verbal and non-verbal communication processes that occur during rituals function to build social bonds, strengthen Malay cultural identity, and convey religius messages. Religius values, such as faith, piety and spirituality, are strongly integrated into every stage and element of the ritual, reflecting the efforts of Malay society to harmonize cultural traditions and Islamic religius teachings. The conclusion of this research provides a more comprehensive understanding of the religius values contained in the “Batammat Kaji” tradition and how these values are communicated through symbols and ritual interactions by the Malay community in Asahan Regency. These findings can contribute to Malay cultural studies, cross-cultural communication studies, and understanding of the integration of religion and tradition in society.
