This individualized learning module on transformers is one in a series of modules for a course in basic electricity and electronics. The course is one of a number of military-developed curriculum packages selected for adaptation to vocational instructional and curriculum development in a civilian setting. This guide offers information and procedures necessary to train electronics engineering technicians. Discussed first are the rationale and objectives of the curriculum. The occupational field of electronics engineering technology is described. Next, a curriculum model is set forth that contains information on the standard electronics engineering technology curriculum, electives, and related courses. Each course description contains some or all of the following: a discussion of the content of the course, a list of course prerequisites and co-requisites, credit hours to be awarded for completion of the course, a course outline, suggested student laboratory activities, a list of student competencies addressed in the course, and a list of recommended texts. Course descriptions are provided for 5 courses in the social and related sciences, 6 courses in mathematics and science, and 19 technical courses. Concluding the guide is a section dealing with equipment needed to implement the curriculum. This fourth of 10 blocks of student and teacher materials for a secondary/postsecondary level course in electronic principles comprises one of a number of military-developed curriculum packages selected for adaptation to vocational instruction and curriculum development in a civilian setting. Prerequisites are the previous blocks. This block on solid state principles contains five modules covering 72 hours of instruction on PN junctions and diodes (12 hours), transistors (12), amplifier principles (22), troubleshooting solid state amplifiers (12), and selected solid state devices (14). Printed instructor materials include a plan of instruction detailing the units of instruction, duration of the lessons, criterion objectives, and support materials needed. Student materials include a student text; five guidance packages containing objectives, assignments, and review exercises for each module; and a comprehensive programmed text on solid state devices. A digest of the modules in the block is provided for students who need only to review the material. Designed for self- or group-paced instruction, the material can be adapted for individualized instruction. Additional print and audiovisual materials are recommended but not provided. (YLB)

This self-study course is designed to familiarize Marine Corps enlisted personnel with the principles of solid-state devices and their functions. The course contains four study units. Each study unit begins with a general objective, which is a statement of what the student should learn from the unit. The study units are divided into numbered work units, each presenting one or more specific objectives. Text is furnished, illustrated as needed, for each work unit. At the end of the work units are study questions, with answers listed at the end of the study unit. A review lesson completes the course. The four units of the course cover the following subjects: semiconductor diodes; transistors; special devices; and solid-state power supplies. (KC)

The skills taught in these materials for a seven-unit course were those identified as necessary not only for entry-level electronic technicians but for those in other occupations as well, including appliance repair, heating and air conditioning, and auto mechanics. The seven units are on shop orientation and safety principles, introduction to direct current, circuitry, introduction to alternating current, circuit components, basic power supplies, and semiconductor devices. The first section is designed to teach teachers how to use the materials and includes an explanation of instructional elements, an instructional-task analysis for each unit, a seven-page glossary, and a list of 14 references. Basic knowledge about Skylab experiments is presented in this book, one of a series, for the purpose of informing high school teachers about scientific research performed in orbit and enabling the teachers to broaden their basis for material selection. This third volume is concerned with the effect of a weightless environment on melting and resolidification of metals and semiconductor crystals and on combustion of solid flammable materials. The first section provides an introduction to crystal growth and a unifying background to the experiments. The second section is related to experiments on gallium arsenide crystal growth, vapor growth of IV-VI compounds, immiscible alloy compositions, radioactive tracer diffusion, microsegregation in germanium, growth of spherical crystal, whisker and reinforced composites, indirum antimonide crystals, mixed III-V crystal growth, halide eutectecs, silver grids melted in space, aluminum-copper eutectic, and classrooom demonstrations.
