Aims: The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to investigate the association between self-reported bruxism and academic performance among dental students at Jazan University. Material and Methods: One hundred sixty-eight students (73 males and 95 females) were evaluated in this study, between the age groups of 18 years and above. Self-reported bruxism was measured by utilizing a customized questionnaire. Academic performance was analyzed using participants' grade point average (GPA) for the year. Independent t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilized to find the association between the self-reported bruxism and the covariate-adjusted analysis (CI 95%). The Spearmen correlation coefficient was utilized to find the correlation between the variables. Results: The reported prevalence of self-reported bruxism was 66.25% between both genders. Males (mean = 36.86) have lower bruxism scores compared to females (mean = 42.14), suggesting a potential gender-based difference in bruxism severity. A moderate positive correlation is observed between self-reported stress levels and bruxism scores (r = 0.268**, P < 0.01), indicating that as stress levels increase, there is a tendency for bruxism scores to also increase. A weak negative correlation is observed between academic performance and bruxism scores (r = -0.034, P > 0.05), suggesting a minimal association between academic performance and bruxism severity. However, bruxism score was higher among females with higher GPA. Conclusions: This study demonstrated a weak negative association between self-reported bruxism and academic performance. It was noteworthy that females with higher GPA and low socioeconomic status had higher bruxism scores compared to males. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim. The aim of this research is to evaluate dental wear in a group of patients with self-reported sleep bruxism. Materials and methods. The study group consisted of a number of 37 patients, women and men, aged between 25 and 57 years, who self-reported bruxism during sleep. Results and discussion. Sextant III recorded the lowest mean and sextant V the highest mean for tooth wear grading scores. 91.9% of the participants presented generalized dental wear. The mild degree of tooth wear was most frequently encountered at sextant III, moderate wear was most frequently encountered at sextant V, and severe wear at sextant II and V. Conclusions. The most frequent score of dental wear recorded was represented by score 2. Most of the patients with self-reported bruxism in sleep presented generalized dental wear. Aim of the study The objective of this study is represented by the identification of the clinical aspects of the oral mucosa in patients with bruxism occurring during sleep. Material and methods. The study group was represented by a number of 70 patients, women and men. The oral examinations were performed on a number of 51 patients who self-reported bruxism during sleep at the Oral Rehabilitation Clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry, “Ovidius” University in Constanța between January 2018 and January 2019. The collected data have were analyzed using the MICROSOFT-EXCEL program. Results. A number of 127 modifications in the oral mucosa were analyzed. The most frequent modifications were in the following regions: jugal mucosa (24%), inferior buccal alveolar mucosa (17%), superior buccal alveolar mucosa (10%), the dorsal surface of the tongue (10%). The presence of linea alba was observed in 51% of patients. The presence of geographic tongue (11.8%) and the presence of dental impressions (10.7%) was also observed. Conclusions. Oral mucosal modifications in patients with self-reported sleep bruxism are frequently found at the level of the jugal mucosa, inferior alveolar vestibular mucosa, superior alveolar vestibular mucosa and the dorsal surface of the tongue. Some of these modifications are manifestations in the context of bruxism, others have not been associated with bruxism until now.

This article, published in the Romanian Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, examines the oral mucosa in patients with sleep-occurring bruxism. The study involved 70 patients, with oral examinations conducted on 51 patients who reported bruxism during sleep. The findings revealed that the most common changes in the oral mucosa were observed in the jugal mucosa, inferior buccal alveolar mucosa, superior buccal alveolar mucosa, and the dorsal surface of the tongue. Some of these changes are associated with bruxism, while others have not been previously linked to the condition. Further research is necessary to fully understand all oral mucosal modifications in the context of bruxism. Introduction: Dental anxiety proves to be the hurdle for dental care, making self-awareness among the population more crucial. Similarly, bruxism has also been reported to be due to stress, but the pathophysiology has not been clearly understood. The current research aims to explore the association of personality traits with bruxism and dental anxiety among health professional students. Methods: A total of 120 dental and medical students were included in our study. All the participants received three different questionnaires: The "modified dental anxiety scale" questionnaire to measure dental anxiety, the "modified bruxism assessment questionnaire" to assess the presence of bruxism, and "the big five inventory" to identify the personality trait. The collected data were statistically evaluated with significance at p < 0.05. Results: Comparison of dental anxiety among professional students showed significantly (p < 0.001) higher anxiety among medical than dental students. Analyzing the prevalence of bruxism revealed awake bruxism to be significantly (p < 0.05) higher in males than females. On analyzing the relation between personality traits and dental anxiety, a positive correlation was seen between the neuroticism type of personality (r = 0.193, p < 0.05) and dental anxiety, especially in females. Conclusion: The prevalence of self-reported awake bruxism was higher among male students, indicating the necessity for more investigation to ascertain the influence of various psychological factors. The correlation between dental anxiety and neuroticism type of personality trait points out the importance of identifying these individuals in a clinical setting and implementing strategies to reduce anxiety and enhance motivation for treatment. Introduction: Stress among students is a growing problem. As emotional stress increases, the limbic structures and hypothalamus are stimulated, activating the gamma efferent system, which ultimately leads to an increase in muscle tone or additional muscle activity that can become repetitive behaviors such as bruxism. The aim of the study was to investigate the stress level that students are exposed to, to determine the difference between students in terms of gender, faculty, and year of study, and to evaluate the possible relationship between stress level and self-reported bruxism in college students during the pandemic COVID-19. Methods: In April 2022, a cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of students from the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Sarajevo (BiH). The students answered a questionnaire consisting of two parts: The first part contained questions on basic personal data and data on self-reported bruxism and the second part contained questions on the perceived stress scale (PSS). Results: The study included 756 students from both faculties. Analysis of stress levels among students revealed higher stress levels. Female students were more likely to be under stress than male respondents. Students in the Faculty of Pharmacy were more likely to be stressed than students in the Faculty of Dentistry. At the Faculty of Pharmacy, there was no difference in stress levels between the different years of study, while at the Faculty of Dentistry, the individual score for PSS was highest among 1st-year students. A high prevalence (46.8%) of self-reported bruxism was found among students in both faculties. Conclusion: A slight positive correlation between self-reported bruxism and stress suggests that it is important to implement stress management strategies during academic education and to prevent bruxism and its consequences. Background/Aim: It is possible to find studies in the literature evaluating the relationship among self-reported bruxism, psychological factors, and myogenous temporomandibular disorder. In addition, the relationship between these issues has not yet been clarified. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between peripartum depression, self-reported bruxism, and myogenous temporomandibular disorders among postpartum women in Turkey.

Objective: To evaluate the association between self-reported bruxism and academic performance in students at a university in Lima, Peru. Material and Methods: A total of 203 students were evaluated in this study, between the ages of 19 and 35 years. Self-reported bruxism was measured using the Bruxism Assessment Questionnaire. Academic performance was evaluated using the Approval Index Scale. In addition, other variables were included such as employment status, socioeconomic level, stress, anxiety, among others. The association of variables were factored in using the chi-square test and the logistic regression presented the unadjusted and adjusted analisis. Results: The frequency of self-reported awake bruxism and sleep bruxism was 53.20% and 36.45%, respectively. Evidence revealed there was a statistically significant association between awake bruxism with stress and anxiety, and sleep bruxism with anxiety. Students with high academic performance (OR=2.36; IC del 95%:1.06-5.23) and low academic performance (OR=5.72; IC del 95%:1.28-25.57) were found to be more likely to have awake bruxism than those with medium academic performance. Conclusion: This study revealed a statistically significant association between self-reported awake bruxism and academic performance. However, in the future it is suggested to carry out a study with focus only on students with bruxism and with a larger sample of participants with low academic performance to confirm the association found between these variables.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between psychological factors (Personality and Dental anxiety) with self-reported bruxism-related symptoms., Methods: 526 subjects, over 18 years old and not seeking dental treatment, were recruited from the families and acquaintances of dental students from the University of Salamanca. Bruxism activity was estimated by means of a six-item questionnaire aimed at recording common bruxism-related symptoms and clenching/grinding awareness. The Spanish version of the modified dental anxiety scale (MDAS) was used to determine the level of anxiety perceived in 5 typical scenarios of dental assistance. The NEO-FFI inventory was applied to assess personality profiles associated with 5 different factors (neuroticism, extroversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness). Pearson correlations, Student T-tests, and logistic regression modelling were used for the statistical analyses., Results: Thirty-five point nine percent of this adults sample was classified as being bruxers, where sleep bruxers comprised more than half of the sample at 20.2%. Bruxers tended to perceive more anxiety in all of the situations included within the MDAS, where they exhibited a higher level of phobia towards the teeth scaling and local anaesthetic injection. The risk of being considered a bruxer is reduced with age (OR: 0.99), and increases proportionally for some personality traits, such as neuroticism (OR: 1.06) and extraversion(OR: 1.04), to the MDAS total score (OR: 1.08) and in smokers (OR: 1.61), after controlling for all potentially confounding factors., Conclusions: Self-reported bruxism is significantly associated to several personality traits (mainly neuroticism and extraversion) and to the level of dental anxiety (MDAS score)., Clinical Significance: Clinicians should be aware of the typical psychological profiles of patients who experience bruxism and the relationship with dental phobias., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
