The liquid metal dealloying (LMD) process enables the fabrication of porous metals with various chemical compositions. Despite its advantages, LMD still faces key challenges such as maintaining the high‐temperature molten metal bath for a prolonged time, avoiding the use of toxic etchants, and so on. To overcome these challenges, the study develops a water‐leachable and oxidation‐resistant alloy melt (AM) in Ca‐Mg binary system. Specifically, Ca72Mg28 eutectic AM is designed, which exhibits higher oxidation resistance and lower melting temperature compared to pure Mg, allowing LMD to be conducted in atmospheric conditions as well as temperatures >200 K lower. The AM also enables an innovative process to fabricate Ti foams with a hexagonal faceted surface structure by carefully manipulating the etching rate during the water etching process. This approach allows for the creation of foam with a surface area over 13% larger than that of foams with smooth surfaces via normal acid etching, potentially enhancing efficiency in applications such as electrodes for electrochemical systems or biomedical materials where increased cell adhesion can be beneficial. The transition to a circular economy entails new challenges for architects and designers. Among these, one challenge is to look at waste not only as new resources, from an environmental perspective, but also as bearers of information capable of communicating their history and origin. Moreover, waste can be considered as a means of activating unexpected knowledge and social connections. The article illustrates a circular design experimentation, conducted with architecture and design students and a wine farm, which led to the creation of the CiaBOT project, a belvedere aimed at enhancing the landscape and providing a temporary stopping point in the Monferrato hills (UNESCO World Heritage Site, Italy). CiaBOT is not only a belvedere but is a microarchitecture capable of conveying both material and immaterial cultural values. Its form and materials are intimately connected with the territory with and for which it was designed. These make CiaBOT a “space” of hybridization and dialogue between agricultural tradition and innovation. But it is also a “space” of fieldwork education and knowledge co-generation in which academic and non-academic stakeholders have measured themselves. Through the description of the different stages of the design process, the article is part of the debate on new sustainable ways of designing and building, reflecting on new models of circular economy based as much on design strategies and processes as on the enhancement of human labor and the use of technologies appropriate to the context and actors.

Kişilik, insanın yaratılışından gelen özelliklerinin dış dünya ile etkileşime girmesi sonucu tutum ve davranışlarda ortaya çıkan yansımadır. Kişinin tutum ve davranışlarının tutarlılığı ise aklın önderliğindeki irade ile gerçekleşir. İradeyi kontrol eden unsurlar vardır. Hem içsel hem de dışsal olgu olan din de bu unsurlardan biridir. Dinin kontrolcü rolü, kişiliğin inşa sürecinde de aktif rol oynar. Dinin bu rolü insanın çocukluk ve ergenlik dönemlerinde daha etkilidir. Sonraki dönemlerde ise insanın kriz anlarında başvurduğu bir unsurdur. Cinsiyetlerin kişilik inşa sürecinde din faktöründen yararlanması farklılık gösterir. Kadın mizacının yumuşaklığı, kişiliğini din faktörüne daha açık hale getirir. Bu durum kadında samimi bir teslimiyet doğururken bütüncül bir kişilik de inşa eder. Bu nedenle kadının kişilik inşasında ve kriz anlarında dinden yararlanmasının etkinliği gelecekte sağlıklı şahsiyetlerin yetiştirilmesi için araştırılması gereken bir konudur. Yapılan literatür araştırmalarında kadın kişiliğini özel bir şahıs bağlamında ele alan çalışmalarla karşılaşılmamıştır. Bu nedenle biz de bu çalışmayla hem alana katkı sağlamayı hem de dinin olumlu kontrolcü güç olarak kişilik inşasına etkisini değerlendirmeyi amaçladık. Bu bağlamda hayatı, farklı inançların, kültürlerin ve geleneklerin etkisinde dönemler içeren Bezmialem Valide Sultan’ın kişiliğini incelenmiştir. Edindiği çeşitli kimliklerde kişiliğini, bütüncül ve sağlıklı bir yapıya ulaştırmasında; dinin rolünü vurgulanmıştır. Hayatı boyunca yaptırdığı hayır vakıflarıyla din faktörünün kişilik inşasına etkisi bilimsel açıdan ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu hayır vakıflarından beş tane örnek seçilmiştir. Bunlar; Vakıf Gureba Hastanesi, Dārü’l-Maʿārif,, Dolmabahçe Camii, Galata Köprüsü ve Terkos Gölü’dür. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılırken dökümanların incelenmesi tekniğine başvurulmuştur. Çalışmanın sonucunda, Bezmialem Valide Sultan ve hayır eserleri üzerinden; kişiliğin inşasında, dinin etkisinin olumlu olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Bu süreçte iradeyi kontrol eden temel unsur din olduğunda insanın tutarlı ve kalıcı tutum ve davranışlar sergilediği görülmüştür

This article focuses on how children, independent of abilities, create healthy identities and spaces in kindergarten, and is based on a qualitative CGT-study carried out in Norwegian Kindergartens. Data sources include Life-form interviews with 24 children, with and without disabilities. Children placed health in the context of their daily-life experiences. They underlined the importance of aspiring to social well-being and creating healthy spaces through internally driven physical exertion and child-controlled activities. Children described how they relate to the staff's restrictions and legal requirements as "the staff" versus "we, the children". They advocate for the staff's engagement in play and activities. Collective self-construction sites are children of the time of crisis. They represent, when economic conditions turn into social urgency, an emergency solution, but at the same time experimental, connoting themselves as real architectural laboratories, with a strong democratic impulse. Starting from the description of some construction practices, implemented in São Paulo Metropolitan Region, the contribution proposes a critical reading of the theoretical speculations at the origin of these virtuous practices, recognized as a legacy of the design research of the 1960s-1970s of the Arquitetura Nova group. Indeed, the investigations of Sérgio Ferro, Rodrigo Lefèvre and Flávio Império inspired, and permeated, the organization of the site for houses and collective spaces areas, intended for the population without access to the housing market. Arquitetura Nova's aspirations and experiments confirm the affirmation of new management and realization processes. The constructive paradigm is completely overturned in order to break down the boundary between intellectual and manual labor. The project, designed a priori, loses its role to give way to individual contribution. The production of the group, partly or not at all known in Italy, focuses on a constant dialogue between all the actors involved in the construction: the challenge is to build some houses according to new relations and productive reasons.

Moving out from the childhood home is an essential transition in most young people's lives. Based on the concept of 'belonging', this article explores how young people obtain a sense of belonging to a new place after leaving their childhood homes. The article explores the heterogeneous processes involved in the process of coming to belong to a new place. The article is based on a longitudinal interview study involving 36 Danish young people, whom we have followed for 12 months in their process of leaving home. In the interviews, the young people talk about their feelings and thoughts in relation to this transition. The initial period, in which young people establish themselves in a new place is often characterised by feelings of insecurity. The article shows how young people act upon these feelings and in doing so create a sense of belonging to a new place through heterogeneous affective, material, relational and spatial processes linked to self-construction. The article thereby nuances the concept of belonging and argues that the establishment of belonging to a new place is a multidimensional performative process of 'holding oneself in place'. This study explores the relationship between influencer characteristics, consumer emotions, and self-construction in the context of impulse buying among millennials in the digital age. It examines how specific traits and qualities of influencers influence millennials' emotions and shape their selfidentity during the process of impulse buying. The research investigates the dimensions of influencer marketing that have the most significant impact on millennials' emotional responses and their construction of self-image. By analysing the interplay between influencer characteristics, consumer emotions, and self-construction, this study provides valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms driving impulse buying behavior among millennials in the digital era. The results provide new insight into the power of influencers to sway customer behavior and suggest ways in which businesses may more successfully employ influencer marketing to connect with and convert young buyers. The present study is concerned with the issue of ego documents that were created in the second half of the 1940s and at the turn of the 1950s at the request of the Commission of Interior of the Slovak National Council 1 in Bratislava, Slovakia. The documents are of a strong ideological character. Their authors, who were of Jewish origins, were employees of the State Security Service, who were active in the communist partisan resistance movements during the World War II. After it ended, with the support of the Communist Party they joined the State Security Service, the repressive body of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ).Their mission wasto promote the interests of the Communist Party in the security forces. In the early 1950s along with other members of the State Security Service, they were convicted in a fabricated political trial. This study analyses how the authors of the biographies consciously worked with the contemporary ideological discourse and constructed a self-image that corresponded to contemporary demands. It answers the questions of why and how they sought to distance themselves from their origins, as well as their family and religious back ground. This paper also responds to long-standing debates among scholars regarding the diversity of ego documents, their use and interpretation in the historical and social sciences. The aim of the study is to draw attention to the specificity of working with documents produced under totalitarian conditions, which primarily testify to the era that constructs the subjectivity of authors rather than reflecting their individuality. This article aims to explore the potential and limitations of participatory design and co-manufacturing processes, taking the city of Barcelona as a reference. It is characterized by an aging building stock, tourist pressure, and difficulties for citizens in accessing affordable housing. In this sense, a selection of six cases of co-design and co-manufacturing is presented, as a range of small-scale interventions that were shared and discussed in the "Debate sessions. Co-Design and Co-Fabrication in Architecture" within the Co-Hab-Raval project, which motivated this research. Thanks to these case studies, it has been possible to analyse a wide range of intervention practices. The article exposes the socioeconomic context of Barcelona and its lack of affordable housing, which motivated the practices presented. In addition, the cases are carrying out a comparative analysis based on the parameters of agents involved, the type of users' participation, and materials resource management. Finally, the results obtained highlight the relationship between the construction systems and the self-construction and reuse strategies used, as well as the importance of the plurality of agents that intervened in the design process to enrich the proposals and empower users, especially in vulnerable environments. Transferred in 2016 to the Archives and Library of Architecture of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the archives of Jean Hensens (1929–2006) bring together a large collection of unpublished documents on the work and career of the Belgian architect and urban planner. This collection consists mainly of study reports, preparation documents and articles that J. Hensens wrote during his career in Morocco between 1962 and 1989. Based on these archives and those of the Centre d’expérimentation, de recherche et de formation (CERF), this article traces the beginning of his career, which led him and his wife Stacia Hensens (1931–) to work in Morocco for various research agencies and ministries. Through the analysis of J. Hensens’s early projects and research and his involvement in the CERF, we identify how his principle of “devenir traditionnel” (becoming traditional) was developed and concretized in three main forms of research: a) the experimentation and improvement of raw earth techniques; b) the promotion of new forms of “collective self-construction” housing; c) and finally, the attempt to model and redesign the foundation and composition processes of the so-called vernacular habitat. This article examines the design-research of the white, South African, left-wing, liberal architect Elizabeth "Betty" Spence (1919–84) during early spatial apartheid. Building on Spence's fragmented archive of publications and interviews, we explore how she worked for and with disenfranchised Black township inhabitants on materializing alternative housing options. Spence's approach included careful observation of how different inhabitants—particularly women—used interior spaces. While her work responded pragmatically to distinct South African social, economic, and racial challenges, this article shows that her design-research was indebted to both European design thinking on the optimization of domestic space and American-South African debates on "race relations." Her concern with incremental housing, self-construction, and the process of building and homemaking in the townships, we argue, should be understood as a form of political action that enabled self-determination within the framework of modern urban life. The narrative essence of human nature is that humans are storytellers, and this ability helps to constitute our identities. Challenges that disrupt this innate ability are adverse events that affect the human perception of the world and undermine the meaning one finds in reality. Such events might range from short-term stressors to long-term testing conditions such as pandemics. Tools for overcoming these negative effects and for achieving self-preservation might be sought in individual storytelling abilities in relation to self-constitution and identification. An example of an interactive digital narrative medium that provides a platform for such expression of complex issues is virtual reality (VR), which has been used as a visual narrative storytelling tool for decades. This study sets the notion of trauma in a new light, as a break in the individual story used to explain one’s life and as a story to be intertwined with and re-adapted to one’s overall lifetime. In the healthcare context, this experience can be most effectively presented in VR because it offers added meaning, potential choices, closure, and resolution as methods of utilization. Therefore, VR can be seen not only as a medium whereby traumatic events can be processed but also as an alternative viewpoint of the goal of self-(re)creation. This research discusses a theoretical proposal for ways of playing with self-construction mechanisms in the context of an immersive VR environment to create more opportunities to change one’s narrative and, hence, one’s real-life story. Daka destinations refer to tagging one's visit to a popular destination by posting on social media. As a novel tourism concept derived from digital media in the post-pandemic era, Daka destinations have become a major option for potential tourists; thus, investigating tourist intentions toward them is of utmost significance to tourism recovery. Based on the viewpoints of information sources of Daka destinations, tourism motivations, and self-construction, this study investigates the research framework of potential tourism intentions through three scenarios. The findings revealed the following: (i) Different information sources have different stimuli for potential tourists, and WeChat Moments exerted a positive impact on tourism intention because of credibility; tourism bloggers from Weibo exert a more significant positive impact on tourism intentions of potential tourists because of professionalism. (ii) Considering the credibility of WeChat Moments, the extrinsic motivation of potential tourists exerted a more significant impact on tourism intentions; regarding professional tourism bloggers, the intrinsic motivation of potential tourists exerted a more significant impact on tourism intention. (iii) Regarding the credibility of WeChat Moments, dependent self-construction potential tourists with extrinsic motivation exerted a more significant impact on tourism intention. Regarding tourism bloggers with high professionalism, independent self-construal potential tourists with intrinsic motivation exerted a more significant impact on tourism intention. This study enriches the research mechanism of the formation path of potential tourists' tourism intention, extends the self-construction theory to the research field of using social media to collect Daka destinations tourism information, and provides a reference to subsequent research on potential tourists' tourism intention. Conception of autopoesis has an important place among conceptions of self-organization. Biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela consider living beings as self-referring and self-constructing autonomous systems, namely, as autopoietic systems. They proclaimed: “All doing is knowing. All knowing is doing” in their famous book “The Tree of Knowledge”. It concerned all living beings, including human beings with the biological roots of their cognition. Author of the article choose this conception of self-organization as working model of on line teaching and learning just because the lack of such biologist roots in on-line communication. Unconsciousness but influenced features of live communication by humans with their “embodied mind” just loose in communication on line. Analyzing own experience of off line and on line teaching in frame of autopoetic approach, author tries to seek the means to overcome the restrictions of on line teaching and learning. The idea by Maturana and Varela about continually recurrent interactions between participants of doing and knowing which provide their creation of common world in common linguistic field became the main point of conclusion. Active communications between lector and students and between students in workshops can partly compensate an absence of live communication. It means that standard obvious relation between quantity of lectures and workshops have to be changed with free choice by lector among new special forms of on line learning. Original work of students for solving the tasks are preferable, especially if the tasks are connected with scientific or technologic researches. In any case supporting the discussions and debates, teachers can stimulate those recurrent interactions which guarantee the autopoesis as self-construction of common world in which self-organization of young persons is possible in their becoming the young specialists. The concept of autopoesis is able to maximize the success of communication between teachers and students and students to each other to provide feedback in the joint actions of cognition, creating the effect of sustainable self-organization in learning.

The abLIM1 is a nonerythroid actin binding protein critical for stable plasma membrane-cortex interactions under mechanical tension. Its depletion by RNA interference results in sparse, poorly interconnected cortical actin networks and severe blebbing of migrating cells. Its isoforms, abLIM-L, abLIM-M, and abLIM-S, contain, respectively four, three, and no LIM domains, followed by a C terminus entirely homologous to erythroid cortex protein dematin. How abLIM1 functions, however, remains unclear. Here we show that abLIM1 is a liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS)-dependent self-organizer of actin networks. Phase-separated condensates of abLIM-S-mimicking ΔLIM or the major isoform abLIM-M nucleated, flew along, and cross-linked together actin filaments (F-actin) to produce unique aster-like radial arrays and interconnected webs of F-actin bundles. Interestingly, ΔLIM condensates facilitated actin nucleation and network formation even in the absence of Mg2+. Our results suggest that abLIM1 functions as an LLPSdependent actin nucleator and cross-linker and provide insights into how LLPS-induced condensates could self-construct intracellular architectures of high connectivity and plasticity. In this paper, I examine a Chinese family's oral history, which revolves around their tumultuous life transformations under the impact of China's communist movement between 1940 and 1977. Using interviews with four siblings who have distinctive personalities and life narratives, I focus on how they apply fatalistic thinking—a phenomenon popular among ordinary Chinese but is rarely analyzed by scholars—to make sense of the vicissitudes of the fates of the family members. I position the Chinese family's oral history in macro and micro contexts. In the macro context, since the land reform in 1940s, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) had attempted to replace peasants' fatalistic thinking with class analysis to explain the roots of hardships in their lives. As the communist movement and class struggle receded, fatalistic thinking—which has never been eradicated—revived. In the micro context, fatalistic thinking is expressed through distinctive memories and narratives, which are linked to personalities and identities. I argue that fatalistic thinking is a mean of self-construction that people consciously or unconsciously resort to when facing absurdity. By using fatalistic thinking, people develop narratives about the self and create a sense of mental balance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses how COVID-19 pandemic has widened the gap between the career and life chances of learners with sufficient and those with insufficient access to personal and educational resources in South Africa. Topics include effect of the pandemic on learners in resource-constrained areas especially; merits of counseling for career construction as an intervention that can bring about transformative change; and aim of counseling to promote career adaptability and future employability.

The COVID-19 pandemic has widened the gap between the career and life chances of learners with sufficient and those with insufficient access to personal and educational resources and structures. This article draws on an adapted, qualitative, systematic literature search to shed light on the effect of the pandemic on learners in resource-constrained areas especially. It discusses the merits of counselling for career construction as an intervention that can bring about transformative change, thereby rekindling learners’ sense of hope and purpose. It also reflects on how counselling for career construction can help counsellors and teachers assist learners to deal with inadequate ‘mastering of passive suffering’ as well as inadequate mastering of developmental tasks during COVID-19. The article concludes with the view that ‘hope-, purpose-, and action’-enhancing counselling for self and career counselling can bolster the sense of agency, empowerment, dignity, and self-worth of learners in underprivileged contexts in particular. It is argued that such counselling can promote career adaptability, improve present and future employability, and enhance the meaning-making of disadvantaged South African as well as other African learners. Significance: • Disadvantaged learners and the unemployed were more negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic than their more privileged counterparts. • More than 2 years into the COVID-19 pandemic, very little has been reported on the need to bolster the sense of agency, empowerment, dignity, and self-worth of learners in underprivileged contexts in particular. • The pandemic has amplified the divide between the career-life prospects of learners with sufficient access to educational resources and support and those without such access. • Steps need to be taken urgently to implement interventions that can bring about transformative change in our schools to rekindle learners’ sense of hope and purpose. This will help eliminate existing disparities and improve these learners’ work–life future, with positive benefits for the stability and economy of the country.

In this article I propose a theoretical model concerning schemes and interventions relevant to lifelong career and life construction. I use different concepts, such as (1) the VUCA world to define the complex environment and how individuals can respond to this complexity, (2) Life Design which postulates that career construction requires identity construction, (3) lifelong guidance, counselling and learning which defines an individual's personal and professional construction at all stages of life and (4) the guidance-oriented approach to learning which proposes interventions allowing personal and career construction at school. This work is rooted in current thinking about how to help individuals, individually and collectively, to build their future. A model is proposed with the objectives of helping contribute to the development of individuals' professional lives and determining support actions that seek equity and social justice in their environment, at school and in the labour market. This study introduces the self-construction methods of consumers and the tendency characteristics of experiential purchase to study the effects of physical purchase and experiential purchase on wellbeing. The dependent self-builders obtain higher happiness from experiential purchase; however, the independent self-builders get higher happiness from physical purchase. Furthermore, consumers with a high purchase experience get higher happiness from experiential purchase. Consumers with high material consumption tendency get significantly higher happiness than physical purchase from experiential purchase. Consumers with high materialism tendency gain higher happiness in experiential purchase, which is in line with the expectations of self-construction and consumption theories. This research presents a comparative study and an indoor thermal comfort analysis of self-constructed dwellings with different roofing in the Lower Papaloapan River Basin in Mexico. These include concrete roofs, zinc-coated sheet metal, asbestos sheets and palm fronds, all with and without false ceilings. The comparative study takes into account the identification and analysis of different architectural typologies, materials, structural pathologies, as well as the construction processes and the number of hours in which a dwelling is inside the comfort zone proposed. Until now, there is no relevant information about the comfort zone for the inhabitants of the studied region. Thermal comfort analysis shows that the comfort zone for the region is difficult to achieve due to the temperature and humidity of the region. Among the roofing without a false ceiling, the dwelling with palm roofing had the best performance whilst housing with zinc roofing produced the worst. Moreover, palm roofing is an ecological and vernacular option that uses local materials. In the case of a false ceiling, a standardizing effect was observed for all types of roofing. New approaches to show and analyse data and some suggestions for improving comfort conditions within homes in the region were proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As people continue to pay attention to environmental issues, the concept of green consumption has emerged. In order to study the effects of the guidance information on green consumption behavior, this paper chose two common situations in social life: "household electricity-saving" and "carton recycling," and designed an inter-group experiment of 2 (Message Framing: Gain framing/Loss framing) × 2 (Language Intensity: Assertive language/Nonassertive language) × 2 (Self-construction: Interdependent self-construal/Independent self-construal), based on the Self-construal Theory. It aimed to examine the influence of different message strategies on the green consumption behavior willingness of information receivers. It was found that for interdependent individuals, the gain framing message has more positive influence on the intention of green consumption behavior, while the loss framing can better promote independent individuals' willingness. Nonassertive message had a positive impact on the intention of green consumption behavior of both types of individuals. Besides, when the message is nonassertive, gaining framing and losing framing message has a more significant role in promoting the green consumption behavior willingness of interdependent individuals and independent individuals, respectively. This article is a reflection on housing and self-built spaces in the city of Campina Grande. This theme can be approached from several starting points: housing as a right, housing as use value/exchange value, housing as a place, housing x family income, among others. From some of these biases, the text discusses the reality of the city taking into account the historical process of production of urban space, from the origin and maintenance of popular settlements in the city, in addition to the necessary approach to self-construction, that is, the construction of houses by the families themselves. The article intends to analyze the problems related to housing in Campina Grande, considering the historical housing production through self-construction, as well as the current nuances of this reality. To this end, with a view to an approach that considers the spatial and temporal dimensions, surveys and bibliographical/documental analyzes were carried out on the production of precarious settlements in the city, in addition to field work (with survey and analysis of variables) in some neighborhoods of Campina Grande. The reflection takes place, among others, in the light of the agents that produce urban space (CAPEL, 1974; CORRÊA, 1993, 2011), in view of the importance of excluded social agents, as producers of urban space through self-construction, as well as the State as one of the main agents responsible for the perpetuation of housingrelated problems in the analyzed space. Perceptual changes that an agent produces by efferent activity can become part of the agent's minimal self. Yet, in human agents, efferent activities produce perceptual changes in various sensory modalities and in various temporal and spatial proximities. Some of these changes occur at the "biological" body, and they are to some extent conveyed by "private" sensory signals, whereas other changes occur in the environment of that biological body and are conveyed by "public" sensory signals. We discuss commonalties and differences of these signals for generating selfhood. We argue that despite considerable functional overlap of these sensory signals in generating self-experience, there are reasons to tell them apart in theorizing and empirical research about development of the self. Egypt faces many urban challenges such as Spontaneous growth on agricultural lands, which causes the inability to fulfilling the needs of the increase population, and it is necessary to contribute to the development of a comprehensive strategy to guide the growth of those spontaneous self-constructed communities (as we redefine them in this paper) correctly to be effective communities. The trend of self-sufficiency in development contributes to the effectiveness of those areas, in not completely relying on the state only and contributing to a comprehensive renaissance, and facing some of urban challenges by their residents with the help of specialists and those interested. Since these regions possess many characteristics of self-sufficiency ,such as, collective living , proximity and they are spontaneous, self-constructed communities by their residents to solve their problems and this was a reason to think about the possibility of applying the idea of self-sufficiency to developing them. Therefore, we in this paper aims to clarify the idea of self-sufficiency and its importance, and an experiment for its application to extract some criteria by which it is possible to start a strategy to guide the growth of spontaneous communities in Egypt with the concept of self- sufficiency.

The notion of coolness is connected with a broad range of different meanings that involve personal attitude, taste, fashion choices but also the recognition of uniqueness and authenticity by others. Moreover, coolness is related to self-confidence and imperturbability, as the usual historical reconstructions of its meaning show. In fact, the manifestation of subjective invulnerability is the expression of the general need to avoid any weakness that could challenge one’s own autonomy through other people’s gaze. In other words, the opposite of cool is to be excessively self-conscious, too dependent on the approval of others, and to be exposed and vulnerable to external judgment. Taking cues from these different meanings, this contribution will try to argue how the need for individual autonomy, social recognition and aesthetic fulfilment are closely intertwined in the practices of coolness, defined as acts of “self-construction” and, in particular, as aesthetic self-fashioning. From this perspective, it will be argued that even the most frivolous search for coolness as a stylistic attitude in everyday’s aesthetic domain like fashion, consumption and lifestyle, plays a role in the dynamics of self-assertion and becomes an instrument for recognition and autonomy.

Mexican artist Abraham Cruzvillegas, of Purepecha origin, develops, through installations made of combinations of recovered urban and industrial waste, a work that addresses the social experiences of creation, transformation and subversion, from the edges of the city and from beyond State control. Through the visual analysis of a group of works by this artist, this essay examines the role of sculptures and installations as theoretical and critical devices of forms of life that, with their ingenuity and effort, persist in overpopulated and segregated urban environments. The essay concludes that Cruzvillegas’ objects and installations provide urban anthropology with a critical register, as while they denounce conditions of misery and inequality, they work in a dual approach: 1) as condensed experiences, through which a reflexivity about the forms produced by human activities is deployed, and 2) as images whose materialities and architectures reveal the paradoxical interplay, which between precariousness and creativity, develop forms of life on the urban margins.
