Sectorization of a water distribution network (WDN) into district meter areas (DMAs) is considered a key strategy for an efficient management of WDNs. Typically, it involves a two-stage procedure: a clustering stage, in which the division of the WDN into clusters is performed, and a dividing stage, which involves the placement of valves and flow meters on the cluster's boundary pipes to define the DMAs. While recently published methods attempt to enhance both the clustering and dividing stages, they fail to provide decision-making flexibility. They also neglect to consider the presence of existing valves in the WDN, which can significantly affect the evaluated implementation cost, often considered the primary decision-driving factor. This paper presents improvements to the previously introduced DeNSE method for sectorization of WDNs, aiming to address these deficiencies. The methodology consists of a clustering stage, based on the network uniformity index, and a dividing stage, in which the originally used heuristic procedure is replaced with Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization, minimizing implementation cost. Consideration of existing valves in WDN and criteria for water supply security are also included in the dividing stage to offer a better estimate of implementation costs and post-sectorized operational efficiency of the WDN. Finally, GIS visualization is implemented, and a hydraulic model of the sectorized WDN (EPANET file) is generated, providing practitioners with valuable insights and decision-making flexibility. The methodology is tested on a part of the Amsterdam WDN in the Netherlands, serving as a pilot for methodology evaluation. A range of feasible sectorization solutions is generated and compared based on implementation cost and three performance indicators (PIs). The paper provides an in-depth discussion on the selection of preferable sectorization solution. The reported results demonstrate the method's efficiency in optimizing sectorization solutions with minimum implementation cost whilst preserving the WDN operational efficiency and meeting the local design criteria. In this study, we examine the performance of a multicell cellular system featuring an Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) - In-band full duplex transmission (IBFD) enabled base station to improve spectral efficiency. The simultaneous transmission of multiple signals on the same frequency resource introduces several interferences and necessitates higher transmission powers to meet user’s quality of service (QoS) requirements. To address this, we introduce a heuristic approach aimed at optimizing subcarrier and power allocation with the goal of minimizing required downlink powers while ensuring QoS for each user. We also present decodability order for downlink (DL) NOMA in the presence of uplink users. Subsequently, we extend our investigation at sector level to obtain a comprehensive understanding of network dynamics within a more confined coverage area. We use orthogonal resource allocation and half duplex scenarios as benchmarks to evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm. Numerical simulations reveal that NOMA-IBFD requires lower transmit powers to meet QoS compared to the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system, despite having more interference terms. Our key findings emphasize that the proposed algorithm not only enables users with weaker channel conditions to meet QoS requirements but also allows users with stronger channel conditions to contribute significantly to system throughput enhancement, thereby providing enhanced energy efficiency.

In South Asia, Latin America, and Africa, approximately 1.3 billion people intermittently receive water for domestic use through piped networks, known as intermittent water supply (IWS). IWS poses high operation costs and Non-Revenue Water (NRW) to water utilities, coping costs for water storage and treatment facilities to consumers, inequitable water supply, and health problems. Water scarcity is one of the main causes of water supply intermittency. This study presents a heuristic approach for sectorizing and optimum operation of IWS systems under water scarcity conditions. The methodology employs a two-step strategy: the first is a heuristic method for dividing the network into sectors based on connectivity, direct access to the source, and minimizing cut size between sectors. The second is the application of the evolutionary multiobjective optimization method, a nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), for the optimum operation of IWS systems considering three objectives: the operational cost, level of equity, and level of pressure among consumers. Design variables for the optimization problem include the status of bridge pipes between sectors and the triggers on/off for the tank levels. A benchmark network was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The results of the application of optimization for the optimal operation of nonsectorized and sectorized networks highlight the potential of improving both equity and pressure uniformity of the IWS system. Sectorization and optimal operation of IWS systems appear to have significant effects on improving pressure uniformity in different parts of the sector, improving equity among consumers and saving energy throughout the day. Multi-objective optimization (MOO) considers several objectives to find a feasible set of solutions. Selecting a solution from Pareto frontier (PF) solutions requires further effort. This work proposes a new classification procedure that fits into the analytic hierarchy Process (AHP) to pick the best solution. The method classifies PF solutions using pairwise comparison matrices for each objective. Sectorization is the problem of splitting a region into smaller sectors based on multiple objectives. The efficacy of the proposed method is tested in such problems using our instances and real data from a Portuguese delivery company. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used to obtain PF solutions based on three objectives. The proposed method rapidly selects an appropriate solution. In this study, we compare the performance of optimization software to solve the bi-objective sectorization problem. The used solution method is based on an approach that has not been used before in the literature on sectorization, in which, the bi-objective model is transformed into single-objective ones, whose results are regarded as ideal points for the objective functions in the bi-objective model. Anti-ideal points are also searched similarly. Then, using the ideal and anti-ideal points, the bi-objective model is redefined as a single-objective one and solved. The difficulties of solving the models, which are basically non-linear, are discussed. Furthermore, the models are linearized, in which case how the number of variables and constraints changes is discussed. Mathematical models are implemented in Python's Pulp library, Lingo, IBM ILOG CPLEX Optimization Studio, and GAMS software, and the obtained results are presented. Furthermore, metaheuristics available in Python's Pymoo library are utilized to solve the models' single- and bi-objective versions. In the experimental results section, benchmarks of different sizes are derived for the problem, and the results are presented. It is observed that the solvers do not perform satisfactorily in solving models; of all of them, GAMS achieves the best results. The utilized metaheuristics from the Pymoo library gain feasible results in reasonable times. In the conclusion section, suggestions are given for solving similar problems. Furthermore, this article summarizes the managerial applications of the sectorization problems.

Sectorization is concerned with dividing a large territory into smaller areas, also known as sectors. This process usually simplifies a complex problem, leading to easier solution approaches to solving the resulting subproblems. Sectors are built with several criteria in mind, such as equilibrium, compactness, contiguity, and desirability, which vary with the applications. Sectorization appears in different contexts: sales territory design, political districting, healthcare logistics, and vehicle routing problems (agrifood distribution, winter road maintenance, parcel delivery). Environmental problems can also be tackled with a sectorization approach; for example, in municipal waste collection, water distribution networks, and even in finding more sustainable transportation routes. This work focuses on sectorization concerning the location of the area's centers and allocating basic units to each sector. Integer programming models address the location-allocation problems, and various formulations implementing different criteria are compared. Methods to deal with multiobjective optimization problems, such as the ϵ -constraint, the lexicographic, and the weighted sum methods, are applied and compared. The aim of the current paper is to revisit the performance of spectral clustering algorithms for water distribution networks. In the literature, there have been attempts to introduce improved algorithms based on graph theory. We focus on a class of these algorithms that applies the concepts of the spectral clustering approach. We assess the performance of spectral clustering algorithms on a wider range of water network types (i.e. large, medium, and small sized networks) using a wider range of clustering methods (both partitioning and hierarchical) and performance indicators. Our findings suggest that partitioning methods, such as k-means are not consistently efficient in all types of networks. Nonetheless, the Partitioning Around Medoids (PAM) algorithm shows a relatively good performance according to modularity, while the internal indices of k-means and hierarchical clustering algorithms are more efficient. Stability indices show that PAM and CLARA algorithms are more efficient.

Abstract Background The concept of deinstitutionalization started in the 1960s in the US to describe closing down or reducing the number of beds in mental hospitals. The same process has been going on in many countries but with different names and in various forms. In Europe, countries like Italy prescribed by law an immediate ban on admitting patients to mental hospitals while in some other European countries psychiatric care was reorganized into a sectorized psychiatry characterized by open psychiatric care. This sectorization has not been studied to the same extent as the radical closures of mental hospitals, even though it entailed major changes in the organization of care. The deinstitutionalization in Sweden is connected to the sectorization of psychiatric care, a protracted process taking years to implement. Methods Older people, with their first admission to psychiatric care before or after the sectorization process, were followed using three different time metrics: (a) year of first entry into a mental hospital, (b) total years of institutionalization, and (c) changes resulting from aging. Data from surveys in 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011 were used, together with National registers. Results Examination of date of first institutionalization and length of stay indicates a clear break in 1985, the year when the sectorization was completed in the studied municipality. The results show that the two groups, despite belonging to the same age group (birthyears 1910–1951, mean birthyear 1937), represented two different patient generations. The pre-sectorization group was institutionalized at an earlier age and accumulated more time in institutions than the post-sectorization group. Compared to the post-sectorization group, the pre-sectorization group were found to be disadvantaged in that their level of functioning was lower, and they had more unmet needs, even when diagnosis was taken into account. Conclusions Sectorization is an important divide which explains differences in two groups of the same age but with different institutional history: “modern” and “traditional” patient generations that received radically different types of care. The results indicate that the sectorization of psychiatric care might be as important as the Mental Health Care Reform of 1995, although a relatively quiet revolution.

Water distribution network (WDN) leakage management has received increased attention in recent years. One of the most successful leakage-control strategies is to divide the network into District Metered Areas (DMAs). As a multi-staged technique, the generation of DMAs is a difficult task in design and implementation (i.e., clustering, sectorization, and performance evaluation). Previous studies on DMAs implementation did not consider the potential use of existing valves in achieving the objective. In this work, a methodology is proposed for detecting clusters and reducing the cost of additional valves and DMA sectorization by considering existing valves as much as possible. The procedure of DMAs identification has been divided into three stages, i.e., a) clusters identification; b) sectorization or boundaries optimization and c) performance evaluation of the partitioned network. The proposed methodology is evaluated on a simple network and a real-world water network with the findings provided and compared to the DMAs, established for a raw water network with no existing valves. It is found that there is an adequate difference in cost of strategy implementation in both the cases for the network under consideration and the existing valve system achieved better network performance in terms of resilience index. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are ad-hoc networks with nodes distributed over large areas which forward data to sink nodes. Nodes in the WSN get depleted of their energy during transmissions. Energy holes are formed in the network due to multiple transmissions disrupting further data transfer in the network. Existing work in literature address the issues of improving the energy efficiency and hence network lifetime by topology control, optimal cluster-head selection and scheduling to reduce collisions. We consider a circular WSN with multiple levels in which the nodes are distributed randomly with node density higher towards the sink. The vast circular area is divided into a number of sectors. Dynamic cluster head selection in each sub-sector is implemented using the Whale Optimization Algorithm. We evaluate the performance of the proposed approach in terms of the residual energy and network lifetime. We analyse the proposed model and prove that a nominally balanced energy depletion is achievable in the circular WSN with sectorization. The performance of the proposed approach is compared with the PSO and LEACH protocol implementations. It is observed from the results obtained that with the proposed approach the residual energy ratio is reduced by 50% and 39% for an initial energy of 50 Joules compared to PSO and LEACH protocols. As the initial energy increases there is improvement in percentage reduction in residual energy ratio thereby improving the lifetime of the network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Community mental health care in the UK was established by two influential mental health acts (MHAs). The 1930 MHA legislated for voluntary admissions and outpatient clinics. The 1959 MHA required hospitals to provide local follow- up after discharge, required them to work closely with local social services and obliged social services to help with accommodation and support. An effect of this was to establish highly sectorized services for populations of about 50,000. These were served by multidisciplinary teams (generic CMHTs), which accepted all local referrals from family doctors. Sector CMHTs evolved a pragmatic approach with an emphasis on skill-sharing and outreach, depending heavily on community psychiatric nurses. The NHS is funded by central taxation, with no distortion of clinical practice by per-item service fees. It is highly centrally regulated, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based treatments. Since 2000, generic sector teams have gradually been replaced or enhanced by Crisis Resolution Home Treatment teams, Assertive Outreach Teams and Early Intervention Teams. Assertive Outreach Teams were resorbed into CMHTs, based on outcome evidence. The last decade has seen a major expansion in outpatient psychotherapy (Improving Access to Psychological Treatments (IAPT) services) and in specialist teams for personality disorders and perinatal psychiatry. The traditional continuity of care across the inpatient-outpatient divide has recently been broken. During the last decade of austerity, day care services have been decimated, and (along with the reduction in availability of beds) compulsory admission rates have risen sharply. Mental health care is still disadvantaged, receiving 11% of the NHS spend while accounting for 23% of the burden of disease.

With the continuous air traffic growth and limits of resources, there is a need for reducing the congestion of the airspace systems. Nowadays, several projects are launched, aimed at modernizing the global air transportation system and air traffic management. In recent years, special interest has been paid to the solution of the dynamic airspace configuration problem. Airspace sector configurations need to be dynamically adjusted to provide maximum efficiency and flexibility in response to changing weather and traffic conditions. The main objective of this work is to automatically adapt the airspace configurations according to the evolution of traffic. In order to reach this objective, the airspace is considered to be divided into predefined 3D airspace blocks which have to be grouped or ungrouped depending on the traffic situation. The airspace structure is represented as a graph and each airspace configuration is created using a graph partitioning technique. We optimize airspace configurations using a genetic algorithm. The developed algorithm generates a sequence of sector configurations for one day of operation with the minimized controller workload. The overall methodology is implemented and successfully tested with air traffic data taken for one day and for several different airspace control areas of Europe.

The development of Directional Medium Access Control (DMAC) strategies that allow to enhance the limitations due to the use of omnidirectional antennas in Mobile ad Hoc Networks (MANET), introduces several issues that need to be properly addressed such as the Deafness problem. The use of Smart Antenna Systems (SAS) along with Directional Request To Send (DRTS) and Directional Clear To Send (DCTS) could be not sufficient to mitigate the Deafness. In this regard, a sectorized antenna approach together with a frame scheduling mechanism can improve the overall MAC performance while limiting the Deafness; however, the employment of scheduling algorithms without priority such as the Round Robin could limit the network performance especially in terms of Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) and fairness. For this reason, we propose two approaches: the A-MSDU (Aggregation MAC Service Data Unit) MAC and a WRR (Weighted Round Robin) MAC that could allow to overcome the limitations of the Round Robin scheme applied at MAC layer in order to have an high efficiency in the overall resource allocation. More specifically, obtained results show that, through the use of frame aggregation, it is possible to considerably reduce issues implied by Round Robin such as time slice and network overhead; WRR approach, instead, is able to enhance the overall network fairness by reducing the number of collisions provided by a directional MAC based on Round Robin scheduling; this aspect translates into higher PDR performance compared to Round Robin approach. Fungal sectorization is a complex trait that is still not fully understood. The unique phenotypic changes in sporadic sectorization in mutants of CpBck1, a mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase (MAPKKK) gene, and CpSlt2, a mitogenactivated protein kinase (MAPK) gene, in the cell wall integrity pathway of the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica have been previously studied. Although several environmental and physiological factors cause this sectoring phenotype, genetic variants can also impact this complex morphogenesis. Therefore, RNA sequencing analysis was employed to identify candidate genes associated with sectorization traits and understand the genetic mechanism of this phenotype. Transcriptomic analysis of CpBck1 and CpSlt2 mutants and their sectored progeny strains revealed a number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to various cellular processes. Approximately 70% of DEGs were common between the wild-type and each of CpBck1 and CpSlt2 mutants, indicating that CpBck1 and CpSlt2 are components of the same MAPK pathway, but each component governs specific sets of genes. Functional description of the DEGs between the parental mutants and their sectored progenies revealed several key pathways, including the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, translation, amino acid metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism; among these, pathways for secondary metabolism and translation appeared to be the most common pathway. The results of this comparative study provide a better understanding of the genetic regulation of sector formation and suggest that complex several regulatory pathways result in interplays between secondary metabolites and morphogenesis. Recent evolutions of the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) concept are driving the introduction of new airspace structures and classifications, which must be suitable for low-altitude airspace and provide the required level of safety and flexibility, particularly in dense urban and suburban areas. Therefore, airspace classifications and structures need to evolve based on appropriate performance metrics, while new models and tools are needed to address UTM operational requirements, with an increasing focus on the coexistence of manned and unmanned Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vehicles and associated Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) infrastructure. This paper presents a novel airspace model for UTM adopting Performance-Based Operation (PBO) criteria, and specifically addressing urban airspace requirements. In particular, a novel airspace discretisation methodology is introduced, which allows dynamic management of airspace resources based on navigation and surveillance performance. Additionally, an airspace sectorisation methodology is developed balancing the trade-off between communication overhead and computational complexity of trajectory planning and re-planning. Two simulation case studies are conducted: over the skyline and below the skyline in Melbourne central business district, utilising Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B). The results confirm that the proposed airspace sectorisation methodology promotes operational safety and efficiency and enhances the UTM operators’ situational awareness under dense traffic conditions introducing a new effective 3D airspace visualisation scheme, which is suitable both for mission planning and pre-tactical UTM operations. Additionally, the proposed performance-based methodology can accommodate the diversity of infrastructure and vehicle performance requirements currently envisaged in the UTM context. This facilitates the adoption of this methodology for low-level airspace integration of UAS (which may differ significantly in terms of their avionics CNS capabilities) and set foundations for future work on tactical online UTM operations.

Mutation in CpBck1, an ortholog of the cell wall integrity mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase (MAPKKK) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica resulted in a sporadic sectorization as culture proceeded. The progeny from the sectored area maintained the characteristics of the sector, showing a massive morphogenetic change, including robust mycelial growth without differentiation. Epigenetic changes were investigated as the genetic mechanism underlying this sectorization. Quantification of DNA methylation and whole-genome bisulfite sequencing revealed genome-wide DNA methylation of the wild-type at each nucleotide level and changes in DNA methylation of the sectored progeny. Compared to the wild-type, the sectored progeny exhibited marked genome-wide DNA hypomethylation but increased methylation sites. Expression analysis of two DNA methyltransferases, including two representative types of DNA methyltransferase (DNMTase), demonstrated that both were significantly down-regulated in the sectored progeny. However, functional analysis using mutant phenotypes of corresponding DNMTases demonstrated that a mutant of CpDmt1, an ortholog of RID of Neurospora crassa, resulted in the sectored phenotype but the CpDmt2 mutant did not, suggesting that the genetic basis of fungal sectorization is more complex. The present study revealed that a mutation in a signaling pathway component resulted in sectorization accompanied with changes in genome-wide DNA methylation, which suggests that this signal transduction pathway is important for epigenetic control of sectorization via regulation of genes involved in DNA methylation.

In this study, we compare the performance of optimization software to solve the bi-objective sectorization problem. The used solution method is based on an approach that has not been used before in the literature on sectorization, in which, the bi-objective model is transformed into single-objective ones, whose results are regarded as ideal points for the objective functions in the bi-objective model. Anti-ideal points are also searched similarly. Then, using the ideal and anti-ideal points, the bi-objective model is redefined as a single-objective one and solved. The difficulties of solving the models, which are basically non-linear, are discussed. Furthermore, the models are linearized, in which case how the number of variables and constraints changes is discussed. Mathematical models are implemented in Python's Pulp library, Lingo, IBM ILOG CPLEX Optimization Studio, and GAMS software, and the obtained results are presented. Furthermore, metaheuristics available in Python's Pymoo library are utilized to solve the models' single- and bi-objective versions. In the experimental results section, benchmarks of different sizes are derived for the problem, and the results are presented. It is observed that the solvers do not perform satisfactorily in solving models; of all of them, GAMS achieves the best results. The utilized metaheuristics from the Pymoo library gain feasible results in reasonable times. In the conclusion section, suggestions are given for solving similar problems.
