Abstract: This paper presents an optical approach to estimate the degree of corrosion of metals by measuring the changes in surface texture. The principle behind this method is based on scattering of light by objects. Source fiber is used to focus the light on the biocorroded metal surface. The resultant scattered and reflected light intensities are measured individually using detector fibers placed at different angles. The degree of corrosion is estimated as a ratio of scattered and reflected light intensities of specimen surface in a relative scale from 0 to 100. The observed optical measurements correlate well with the measured corrosion rate (correlation coefficient (R 2)=0.972). A consistent relationship is found between optical measurements and corrosion levels. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A fiber optic sensor system is developed to probe the surface texture of corroded metals. The present work is based on the principle of scattering of light by objects. A light beam from an LED source is focused onto the corroded surface. Specular and diffuse reflection of the surface is measured vertically at normal incidence of a fiber. The observed response agrees well with mechanical stylus measurements, with R² > 0.89. The fiber optic sensor system can be used to estimate the roughness of metals due to any type of corrosion without erosion. The and detector fibres are held at different angles to probe the changes in surface texture due to atmospheric corrosion. The fibre optic sensor system consists of laser light as a source and a pair of photo diodes as detectors. This work is based on the theory of scattering of light by objects. The degree of corrosion of metals is estimated as the ratio between scattered and reflected intensities in a relative scale from zero to one hundred. The results obtained show a consistent relationship between the optical measurements and the level of corrosion.
