Ag-induced crystallization and layer exchange (AgILE) in a stack of amorphous Si/Ag/quartz substrate has been investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM-high angle annular dark field (STEM-HAADF) imaging, and electron tomography, covering length scales from a few tens of micrometers to a few tens of nanometers. The size of Ag grains in the underlying as-deposited Ag film varied from ∼10 to 500 nm. The following processes could be discerned using in situ heating of plan-view samples at 500 °C in STEM: (i) AgILE propagation preferentially along regions of small Ag grains, (ii) formation of pushed-up Ag in the vicinity of AgILE reaction cells, (iii) migration and agglomeration of pushed-up Ag on small and large Ag grains, which tend to inhibit AgILE and promote dendricity, and (iv) dispersion of pushed-up Ag, which tend to reduce dendricity. The resulting dendricity was largely confined to the peripheral regions of the impinging reaction cells and decreased with annealing time. In contrast, dendricity due to AgILE and crystallization at 550 °C is stable and extends right from the center to the periphery of the reaction cells. The microscopic mechanism of AgILE and, in particular, the effect of annealing temperature is investigated. The results are discussed in the light of existing literature and compared with Al-induced layer exchange. Annealing at temperature equal to or slightly less than 500 °C is found to be necessary in the case of AgILE to avoid dendricity and to obtain a continuous Si layer with large Si grains. This article investigated the effects of airborne-particle abrasion and nanosilica (nano-Si) infiltration treatment on the surface characteristics of dental zirconia. A total of 15 unsintered zirconia ceramic green bodies (10 × 10 × 3 mm) were divided into three groups (n = 5): Group C, no treatment after sintering; Group S, airborne-particle abrasion with 50-µm aluminum oxide particles after sintering; and Group N, infiltration of nano-Si followed by sintering and hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching. The zirconia disks' surface roughness was analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The surface morphology of the specimens was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the chemical composition was analyzed by energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX). Data were statistically analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test (P < .05). Zirconia surface treatments by infiltration of nano-Si, sintering, and HF etching showed multiple changes in the surface features. The surface roughness of Groups C, S, and N were 0.88 ± 0.07 µm, 1.26 ± 0.10 µm, and 1.69 ± 0.15 µm, respectively. The surface roughness of Group N was significantly higher than that of Groups C and S (P < .05). EDX analysis showed peaks that corresponded to silica (Si) after infiltration with colloidal Si that disappeared following acid etching. Infiltrating nano-Si increases the surface roughness of zirconia. The formation of retentive nanopores on the surface potentially improves the zirconia-resin cement bonding strengths. Purpose: To compare abutment screw loosening in 24-degree angulation-correcting and straight implants subjected to nonaxial cyclic loading. Materials and Methods: Seven external connection 24-degree angulation-correcting implants (AI) and seven external connection straight implants (SI) were embedded in acrylic resin within a brass housing. A hemispherical titanium fatigue abutment was secured to each implant using a titanium abutment screw tightened to 32 Ncm. Each implant-abutment complex was positioned within a tooth wear machine and subjected to 1,000,000 cycles of 50-Ncm nonaxial loading to simulate 1 year of function. The abutment screw removal torque values were measured before and after cyclic loading, and the differences were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and post hoc pairwise Dunn tests. Scanning electron microscopy and finite element analyses were performed to assess the wear of the abutment screws. Results: The mean torque loss for the AI group was 21.44% (P < .001) compared to 24.56% (P < .001) for the SI group. There was a statistically significant difference between the AI and SI groups (P = .006). Conclusions: Both groups exhibited significant abutment screw loosening. Objectives: The objective was to evaluate the polymerization efficiency of different bulk-fill resin-based composites cured by monowave and polywave light-curing units, by assessment of the degree of conversion and Vickers microhardness at different depths. Method and materials: Two commercially available bulk-fill resin-based composites were used: Filtek One Bulk Fill Restorative (3M ESPE) and Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill (Ivoclar Vivadent). The light-curing units utilized were two LED light-curing units: a monowave LED light-curing unit (BlueLEX LD-105, Monitex) and a polywave LED light-curing unit (Twin Wave GT-2000, Monitex). For each test, 20 cylindrical specimens (4 mm diameter, 4 mm thickness) were prepared from each bulk-fill resin-based composite using a split Teflon mold. Ten specimens were light-cured by the monowave light-curing unit and the other ten were light-cured by the polywave light-curing unit according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATRFTIR) was used to assess the degree of conversion, and a Vickers microhardness tester was used to assess Vickers microhardness. Statistical analysis was performed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests (P < .05). Results: The degree of conversion and Vickers microhardness in bulk-fill resin-based composites containing only camphorquinone as photoinitiator were similar when cured with either monowave or polywave light-curing units. However, bulk-fill resin-based composites containing a combination of photoinitiators exhibited significantly higher degree of conversion and Vickers microhardness when cured with a polywave light-curing unit. Although all groups showed statistically significant differences between the top and bottom surfaces regarding degree of conversion and Vickers microhardness, all of them showed bottom/top ratios > 80% regarding degree of conversion and Vickers microhardness. Conclusion: The polywave light-curing unit enhanced the polymerization efficiency of bulk-fill resin-based composites especially when the latter contained a combination of photoinitiators, but does not prevent the use of a monowave light-curing unit. Both shock and shockless compression experiments were performed on laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) Ti–5Al–5V–5Mo–3Cr (Ti-5553) to peak compressive stresses near 15 GPa. Experiments were performed on the as-built material, containing a purely β (body centered cubic) microstructure, and two differing heat treatments resulting in a dual phase α (hexagonal close packed) and β microstructure. The Hugoniot, Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL), and spallation strength were measured and compared to wrought Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-64). The results indicate the LPBF Ti-5553 Hugoniot response is similar between heat treatments and to Ti-64. The HEL stress observed in the LPBF Ti-5553 was considerably higher than Ti-64, with the as-built, fully β alloy exhibiting the largest values. The spallation strength of the LPBF Ti-5553 was also similar to Ti-64. Clear evidence of initial porosity serving as initiation sites for spallation damage was observed when comparing computed tomography measurements before and after loading. Post-mortem scanning electron microscopy images of the recovered spallation samples showed no evidence of retained phase changes near the spall plane. The spall plane was found to have kinks aligned with the loading direction near areas with large concentrations of twin-like, crystallographic defects in the as-built condition. For the heat-treated samples, the concentrations of twin-like, crystallographic defects were absent, and no preference for failure at the interface between the α and β phases was observed. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of sonic oscillation on penetration depth and marginal adaptation of resin-based fissure sealants. Method and materials: Thirty-six extracted human third molars were randomized into three groups: in the HF group, teeth were sealed with a filled-resin-based sealant (Helioseal F); in the Sonic-HF group, teeth were sealed with Helioseal F and subjected to sonic oscillation (Compothixo Device, 140 Hz vibration frequency and ± 150 µm amplitude) before curing; in the CO group, teeth were sealed with an unfilled-resin-based sealant (Clinpro). All teeth were thermocycled for 1,500 cycles at 5°C and 55°C, then sectioned buccolingually into four sections (mesial, two middle, and distal). Sections were evaluated under SEM for marginal adaptation and scored. For penetration depth, three independent measurements from each tooth were recorded under SEM, and data were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The group subjected to sonic oscillation (Sonic HF) resulted in significantly superior penetration depth and marginal adaptation compared with the HF group, but with no significant difference compared with the CO group. Conclusions: Sonic activation of resin-based sealant increased penetration depth into fissures and marginal adaptation to the enamel wall without decreasing filler load or compromising sealant mechanical properties. Ultrathin ceramic veneers are a viable therapeutic option to manage esthetic challenges in the anterior zone. Proper conditioning of the intaglio surface of porcelain veneers is essential to achieve an adequate bonding. In clinical practice, this is typically done with chemical etching using an acid-containing agent, such as hydrofluoric acid. While it is well established that the etching effect is dependent on etching time and the acid concentration, little is known about the impact of etching time and the veneer fabrication method. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the effect that different etching-time protocols have on the intaglio surface characteristics of ultrathin ceramic veneers fabricated with either the platinum foil technique or the refractory die technique. Several replicas of an ultrathin feldspathic ceramic veneer for a maxillary central incisor were fabricated. Individual specimens were processed according to different intaglio surface-etching protocols: no etching, etching for 90 seconds, etching for 120 seconds, and etching for 150 seconds (9.6% hydrofluoric acid used for all etching groups). It was observed that the 120-second etching protocol resulted in a favorable microroughness surface pattern in the platinum foil group. This pattern was comparable to that obtained by etching for 90 seconds with hydrofluoric acid the intaglio surface of veneers fabricated with the refractory die technique. This study investigated the effect of erbium, chromium: yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser conditioning on dentin bond strength and nanoleakage of different universal and self-etch adhesives. A total of 84 intact human third molar teeth were cut at the dentin level, and half of them were laser conditioned. The specimens were divided into three groups; two different universal resins and one self-etch adhesive resin were applied and composite resin restorations were created. For the microtensile bond strength (pTBS) test, 20 microspecimens were prepared from the laser and control group of each adhesive (n = 20) and tested with a universal device. For nanoleakage observation, 10 specimens were prepared from each group (n = 10) and stored in silver nitrate solution, and then the amount of nanoleakage was analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA, Tukey's honestly significant difference, and chi-square tests. The mean dentin bond strength of all adhesives in the laser groups was found to be statistically significantly lower than those of the control groups (P < .05). No difference was found between the mean bond strength of the adhesives in the laser and control groups (P > .05). Higher nanoleakage was observed in all adhesives in the laser groups compared to the control groups (P < .05). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of desensitizing MI Varnish (GC America) applied before or after bleaching on the mineral component of enamel and surface topography. The coronal portions of 10 freshly extracted bovine teeth were segmented for a total of 40 specimens. Enamel specimens obtained from each tooth were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10): Group A = no bleaching; Group B = bleaching with 40% hydrogen peroxide (HP); Group C = MI Varnish applied before bleaching; and Group D = MI Varnish applied after bleaching. The calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) levels of the specimens in each group were determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Morphologic changes were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). One-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests were used for statistical analyses (α = .05). The mean Ca content of Group B was significantly lower than those of Groups A, C, and D (P < .05). The mean Ca content of Group C was significantly lower than that of Group A (P < .05). There was no significant difference in Ca content between the other groups (P > .05). The mean P content of Group A was significantly higher than those of Groups B to D (P < .05). There was no significant difference in P content between Groups B to D (P > .05). Application of MI Varnish before or after in-office bleaching was effective in reducing mineral loss. Purpose: To compare the fracture resistance of five different groups of chairside CAD/CAM molar crowns fabricated from various lithium disilicate ceramic materials (LDC): one conventional precrystallized CAD/CAM LDC, two novel precrystallized LDCs, and one fully crystallized LDC tested both with and without optional sintering. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate molar crowns (n = 12 per group) with 1.5-mm occlusal thickness and a 1.0-mm chamfer finish were designed and fabricated with a chairside CAD/CAM system (CEREC, Dentsply Sirona). The restorations were divided into five groups: (1) IPS e.max CAD; (2) Amber Mill; (3) Straumann n!ce; (4) Straumann n!ce with optional sintering; and (5) Supreme CAD. Restorations were cemented using conventional resin luting cement and primer system to 3D-printed resin dies. Bonded restorations were loaded for 100,000 cycles with 275-N force, and the load at break (LB) and peak load (PL) until fracture were measured. SEM images of fracture surfaces on the printed dies were obtained. Results: Fracture resistance was significantly different depending on the material. Supreme CAD showed the highest fracture resistance (LB: 1,557.2 N; PL: 1,785.8 N), followed by Amber Mill (LB: 1,393.0 N; PL: 1,604.2 N) and IPS e.max CAD (LB: 1,315.7 N; PL: 1,461.9 N). Straumann n!ce without (LB: 862.4 N; PL: 942.9 N) and with the optional sintering (LB: 490.4 N; PL: 541.0 N) showed significantly lower fracture resistance than the others. Conclusion: The fracture resistance of chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate molar crowns varied depending on the material, and the novel materials did not perform as well as the conventional equivalents. Fully crystallized lithium disilicate ceramic block materials showed lower fracture resistance than precrystallized counterparts and should be used with caution in the clinic, especially with optional sintering. ScN in the rock salt structure is a well-investigated material due to its desirable properties like the high hardness or large thermal conductivity. Recent computations by Adamski et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 115, 232103 (2019)] showed that ScN/GaN heterostructures exhibit an outstanding polarization gradient which would be beneficial for polarization induced electron gases. The pseudobinary semiconductor Sc x Al 1 − x N, when maintaining the cubic rock salt structure, could be beneficial for tailoring the polarization gradient using the Sc dependency of material properties. The structural properties of rs-Sc x Al 1 − x N are not fully discovered yet, thus in this work, DC-magnetron sputtered cubic rock salt Sc x Al 1 − x N thin films with 0.55 < x < 1.00 were grown and analyzed on ScN(111)/Si(111). The epitaxial relation of ScN(111) thin films on the Si(111) substrate is determined to be ScN[110] ∥ Si[100]. Furthermore, concentration dependent properties like the lattice parameter of Sc x Al 1 − x N were measured [a(ScN) = 4.50 Å, a(Sc0.55Al0.45N) = 4.30 Å] and the stress σ within the layers was determined. The crystal quality was evaluated using ω -scans, revealing FWHM = 1.14 ° for Sc0.95Al0.05N. The diameters of the columns were determined by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and they are range from 34 to 59 nm for 0.55 < x < 1.00. At x = 0.55 , Sc x Al 1 − x N columns in the hexagonal wurtzite as well as cubic rock salt structure were detected. This information about the structural specifications of Sc x Al 1 − x N in the rock salt structure forms the basis for further investigations and experimental confirmation of the electric properties of ScN/GaN heterostructures or even a Sc x Al 1 − x N/GaN based approach for improved structures for high-electron-mobility transistors. Purpose: To evaluate the applica.on of chitosan as a cleanser in the control of biofilm forma.on on cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy and acrylic resin surfaces. Materials and Methods: In total, 172 Co-Cr discs and 172 acrylic resin discs (14 mm x 3 mm) were contaminated with Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, or Candida glabrata and incubated for 48 hours. Then, specimens were randomly divided into groups and immersed in the following solu.ons for 15 minutes: solu.on without chitosan (WC/control); chitosan solu.on (CH: 5 mg/mL); chitosan nanopar.cle solu.on (CN: 3.8 mg/mL); and effervescent tablet (ET). Biofilm recovery rates (n = 9) were evaluated by coun.ng the colony-forming units (CFU/mL). Biofilm morphology was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis or ANOVA tests followed by the Tukey post hoc test. Results: For acrylic resin, ET showed the lowest number of CFU for S aureus and S mutans (P < .001). CH exhibited intermediate values for S mutans, S aureus, and C albicans; CN exhibited intermediate values for S mutans and S aureus. For C glabrata, there was no sta.s.cal difference between the solu.ons (P = .264). For Co-Cr, ET showed the highest level of an.microbial ac.on against all microorganisms (P < .001), and CH showed an intermediate level of ac.on against S mutans and S aureus. Against C albicans and C glabrata, there was no significant difference among CH, CN, and WC. Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of cleaning protocols for the decontamination of organic compounds from polished zirconium oxide samples. Materials and Methods: A total of 24 rectangular plate specimens were sintered from zirconium oxide. All samples were polished with commercially available polishers (coarse, fine, and superfine) and polishing paste. During the first step of the protocol, all specimens were cleaned with steam. Samples were then randomly assigned to one of three groups (n = 8 each): A, B, or C. In group A, no additional cleaning was performed, while specimens in group B underwent ultrasonic cleaning in distilled water. Group C specimens were cleaned in an ultrasonic bath with a special detergent solution. After washing, samples were subjected to energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination. In order to detect organic materials, the level of carbon atoms was measured. Results: EDX analysis revealed that samples in group A had the highest percent of carbon atoms (9.57 ± 3.67) on the surface compared to other cleaning protocols. Following the Group B cleaning protocol resulted in lower carbon levels (4.73 ± 3.56), but this difference was not significant compared to group A (P = .439). None of the specimens in group C had detectable carbon atoms (0), which implies that all wax molecules were removed (P < .05). Conclusion: Total decontamination of organic compounds from a polished zirconium surface can be expected only following the C cleaning protocol; therefore, it is advised to employ an ultrasonic bath with detergent solution for cleaning procedures of zirconium abutments before delivery. This study investigates the structural stability of the CeO2-ZrO2 system when subjected to high doses of irradiation (a few hundred displacements per atom). The goal is to explore their potential use in safe immobilization of spent nuclear fuel and development of accident-tolerant fuels for next-generation nuclear reactors. Highly dense pellets were synthesized using a solid-state reaction and then irradiated with 1.75 MeV Xe5+ ions at ion fluences ranging from 1 × 1015 to 1 × 1017 ions/cm2. Structural and microstructural analyses were conducted using glancing angle x-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 has a high tolerance against irradiation-induced phase transformation or amorphization but does generate irradiation-induced point defects. Each energetic ion produced a deformed region with a voluminous swelling of ∼0.61 ± 0.09 nm and a damaged zone of ∼0.09 ± 0.02 nm, as calculated from the irradiation-caused peak broadening that is explained by a three-step damage accumulation model. The electron microscopy studies show that grain boundaries serve as a sink for defects, and an increase in grain size was observed due to defect accumulation inside the grain's volume. Overall, the study shows that polycrystalline fluorite-structured Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 is a promising nuclear material for advanced energy systems as it did not show significant structural damage such as amorphization and grain fragmentation, even on irradiation at a high dose of ∼428 dpa. Mixed valence manganites are potential functional materials due to their unique electromagnetic properties. In this work, half-doped ceramics with the perovskite structure Sm 0.5 Ca 0.5 MnO 3 polycrystalline samples are synthesized by the solid-state reaction method in open air at different final sintering temperatures. Structures and particle sizes are studied by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Positron annihilation spectroscopy and density-functional theory calculations are used to characterize the intrinsic vacancies in the bulk. Thereafter, the effect of vacancies on the magnetic and magnetoresistance (MR) properties is investigated. We find that Mn monovacancies (V Mn ) exist in the bulk among all the samples, and the concentration of V Mn is different. We suggest a possible defect model that can be well applied to explain the phenomena of their electromagnetic properties. The transition temperature of the charge-order state (T CO ) and ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic (T N ) are most likely related to the concentration of V Mn and the particle sizes or pore sizes, respectively. The glass spin state transition temperature seems to be independent of the defect concentration and type. The metal conductive behavior does not appear in a high magnetic field and at low temperatures, which may be caused by the presence of a high concentration of V Mn in the bulk and oxygen-related defects in the boundary, and the double exchange interaction is suppressed. At temperatures below T N and under a weak magnetic field, the MR is related to the total defect concentration. The structure, composition, and spatial distribution heterogeneity of artificial pinning centers affect the critical current density of REBa2Cu3O7−y (RE: rare earth) coated conductors. Nanoscale structures and compositions have been analyzed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). However, microscale heterogeneity has been difficult to characterize. Here, YBa2Cu3O7−y thin films doped with double-perovskite Ba2YbNbO6 were prepared via pulsed-laser deposition and characterized with TEM, STEM, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cross-sectional and plan-view TEM/STEM imaging revealed hybrid pinning structures consisting of nanorods, nanoparticles, and planar defects that were formed spontaneously. Nanorods were imaged with high spatial resolution via field-emission SEM of thin-foil specimens. Focused-ion-beam (FIB) micro-sectioning enables SEM imaging of microscale heterogeneity in nanorod spatial distributions. Nanostructured ZnS films of various molar concentrations have been deposited using chemical bath deposition (CBD) method on glass substrates in the matrix of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Structural analysis of the samples with the help of X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the films are of cubic phase structure and diffraction peaks shift toward higher diffraction angle with the increase of molar concentration. Crystallite size is obtained using Scherrer's formula, Williamson–Hall (WH) plot as well as size–strain plot (SSP), and reveals decrease in size with increasing molar concentration. Surface morphology and surface texture of the samples are observed with the help of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high-resolution transmission electron microcopy (HRTEM) which exhibit the roughly spherical shape of the particles as well as formation of cluster by a large number of ZnS nanoparticles. Observation from selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern also confirms the cubic phase of nanostructured ZnS samples. Surface topographic study using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) also shows particle agglomeration forming nanoclusters and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy observation reveals that the films are composed of zinc and sulfur. With the increase of molar concentration, the optical bandgap energy increases whereas the refractive index as well as dielectric constant decrease, and in comparison to ZnS bulk counterpart, the samples are found to be blue-shifted. The current study describes a facile, time-effective and cost-viable synthesis of highly efficient Fe–N–C catalysts tailored for PEMFC. In this work, three different Fe–N–C catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have been synthesized by pyrolyzing different organic molecules in a microwave machine. The catalytic materials have been characterized using advanced techniques such as SEM, TEM, EDS, XPS, and BET analysis to elucidate their morphological, compositional, and surface properties. The fabricated materials i.e. Fe–N–C-Urea (Fe–N–C–U), Fe–N–C- Para- Phenylene Diamine (Fe–N–C- p PD) and Fe–N–C-5-Amino-1-(4′-Aminophenyl)-1,3,3-Trimethylindane (Fe–N–C-AAT) exhibit remarkable peak power densities, reaching as high as 0.96 W cm−2, 0.77 W cm−2 and 0.90 W cm−2, respectively, at a flow rate of 0.4 L min−1 of oxygen and 0.2 L min−1 of hydrogen, keeping the temperature constant at 80 °C. The use of lignocellulosic biomass to create natural flavor has drawn attention from researchers. A key flavoring ingredient that is frequently utilized in the food industry is vanillin. In this present study, Pediococcus acidilactici PA VIT effectively involved in the production of bio-vanillin by using Ferulic acid as an intermediate with a yield of 11.43 µg/mL. The bio-vanillin produced by Pediococcus acidilactici PA VIT was examined using FTIR, XRD, HPLC, and SEM techniques. These characterizations exhibited a unique fingerprinting signature like that of standard vanillin. Additionally, the one variable at a time method, placket Burmann method, and response surface approach, were employed to optimize bio-vanillin. Based on the central composite rotary design, the most important process factors were determined such as agitation speed, substrate concentration, and inoculum size. After optimization, bio-vanillin was found to have tenfold increase, with a maximum yield of 376.4 µg/mL obtained using the response surface approach. The kinetic study was performed to analyze rate of reaction and effect of metal ions in the production of bio-vanillin showing Km of 10.25, and Vmax of 1250 were required for the reaction. The controllable α/β ratio of Si 3 N 4 powder was synthesized using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), glucose, MgCl 2 and YCl 3 ·6H 2 O by sol-gel assisted carbothermal reduction and nitridation (CRN). This study aimed to investigate the impact of various parameters, including a H 2 O/TEOS mol ratio of the sol, a C/Si mol ratio, sintering aids, and the temperature of CRN on the phase transformation of α-Si 3 N 4. The results demonstrated that the H 2 O/TEOS ratio significantly influenced the relative content of α and β phase in Si 3 N 4 by changing the morphological characteristics of SiO 2. When the H 2 O/TEOS ratio was 100, β-Si 3 N 4 powder with an approximate β content over 88 wt% was synthesized at 1500 °C. This remarkable phase transformation was likely facilitated by the eutectic liquid phase consisting of MgSiO 3 /Mg 2 SiO 4. The SEM image revealed rod-like whiskers with a length around 1.4 μm for the β-Si 3 N 4 grains. Due to the presence of liquid phase, the synthesis of spherical-like α-Si 3 N 4 nano-powder with an α-phase content of 91 wt% was achieved at a lower temperature of 1450 °C, with an H 2 O/TEOS ratio of 15 and a C/Si ratio of 4. The size of the particles was about 70 nm due to the reduced reaction temperature. Furthermore, without the addition of any sintering aids or Si 3 N 4 seeds, high purity α-Si 3 N 4 with an α phase content approaching 96 wt% could be synthesized at 1500 °C, using an H 2 O/TEOS ratio of 15 and a C/Si ratio of 4. Research efforts are focusing on investigating cost-effective and ecologically friendly ways to create nanoparticles as a result of promising developments in green technology (NPs). This experiment focused on the effectiveness of using biochar (TWB) made from coffee waste to extract levofloxacin (LEV) from water. The conclusive results of the trials showed that TWB is an effective adsorbent for removing LEV from liquid solutions. The TWB produced through biological processes underwent comprehensive analysis using techniques such as X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area measurement (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The bioengineered TWB's exceptional crystalline properties, which closely resemble the monoclinic structure of bulk TWB, were confirmed by the XRD analysis. Based on the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) data, the synthesis of TWB Nanoparticles resulted in the formation of spherical particles with an approximate diameter of 40 nm, accompanied by a substantial surface area of 285.55 m²/g. The Pseudo-Second-Order model, which best captured Levofloxacin's adsorption characteristics, was evaluated on the TWB, and the results showed that external mass transfer was the main determinant of response rate. It was also found that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The system was optimized using the Box–Behnken design (BBD) methodology. The achieved removal capacity of 1119.19 mg/g utilizing the tested adsorbent was determined to be reasonable when compared to the performance of other previously used adsorbents when evaluating the effectiveness of eliminating LEV. The process of LEV adsorption onto TWB involves a number of different mechanisms, such as ion exchange, π-π interactions, electrostatic pore filling, and hydrogen bonding. Following extensive testing in connection with a real-world sample, the adsorbent demonstrated remarkable efficacy, and it maintained good performance even after undergoing three further regeneration cycles. By adjusting the annealing temperature, we controlled the synthesis of TWB nanoparticles across a range of sizes in order to maximize their antibacterial capabilities. This research utilized a pair of Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and a pair of Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of TWB. With isophorone diisocyanate and polytetrahydrofuran as basic raw materials, dimethylolpropionic acid and 2,3‐dihydroxypropanesulfonic acid triethylamine salt (DHPSTEA) as chain extension agents, trimethylolpropane as crosslinking agent, N, N‐dimethylethanolamine as neutralizer, the high‐solid carboxylate/sulfonate waterborne polyurethane (SC‐HWPU) was synthesized. The effect of COO−/SO3− molar ratio on the properties of SC‐HWPU was studied. Fourier transform infrared and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrated that the SC‐HWPU molecular chain contained carboxylate and sulfonate groups. The results of thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and mechanical properties of SC‐HWPU film indicated that higher DHPSTEA content was favorable for the thermostability and mechanical properties when the total dosage of hydrophilic groups was invariable. When the mole ratio of COO−/SO3− is 8:2, the solid content of the prepared SC‐HWPU3 emulsion can reach to 51.6%, which has excellent storage stability and alkali resistance stability. Subsequently, the application of SC‐HWPU emulsion on the fixed‐island type polyamide/polyethylene terephthalate copolymer superfine fiber non‐woven fabric single‐coating process was analyzed, and the water‐base superfine fiber non‐woven fabric was prepared. This study introduces a technique for decontaminating radioactive surfaces by employing a gel, herein termed as radiation decontamination gel with eutectic liquids (RADGEL), composed of a deep eutectic solvent and polyvinyl alcohol, with the goal of enabling reuse of the surface post‐decontamination. The decontamination effectiveness of RADGEL underwent thorough evaluation through trials conducted on different simulated surfaces, achieving decontamination efficiency up to 99.9% for alpha as well as gamma radionuclides. The various parameters influencing decontamination factors such as amount of complexing agent used, polymer film thickness, nature, and magnitude of radioactivity, as well as surface characteristics of substrates to be decontaminated were optimized. Additionally excellent mechanical strength of RADGEL, affirms its potential as practically efficient, cost‐effective, and safe option for surface decontamination. The Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis suggest RADGELs capability for both physical and chemical interactions with contaminants, thus highlighting its comprehensive decontamination efficacy. The crystallographic, microstructural, and dielectric properties of Sr 2.1 Na 0.8-x Ca x Nb 5-x Sn x O 15 (x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.05, 0.10) polycrystalline ceramics have been studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, dielectric spectroscopy (DS) and impedance spectroscopy (IS). For x = 0.00, 0.05, and 0.10, samples are single phase with P 4 bm symmetry at room temperature with x = 0.01 showing a small quantity of secondary phase(s). All compositions show typical ceramic microstructures and d 50 grain sizes ranging from 5.1 to 26.6 μm. DS shows a clear trend in the high temperature ferroelectric-paraelectric transition with the Curie temperature, T 0 , decreasing from ∼ 160 to ∼ 110 °C, and an additional relaxation at approximately 120 °C with increasing CaSnO 3. IS reveals all samples have a homogeneous electrical microstructure with predominantly electronic conduction. The activation energy of conduction calculated from Arrhenius plots of the conductivity increases with CaSnO 3 content from 1.27 to 1.38 eV likely due to the expansion of the band gap. The present study establishes an experimental platform for investigating arc erosion and explores the erosion characteristics of Ti 3 AlC 2 material under a voltage of 10 kV in SF 6 /N 2 , SF 6 /CO 2 , and N 2 /CO 2 environments. Our findings reveal that the arc energy and duration exhibit a gradual increase in the sequence of SF 6 /N 2 , SF 6 /CO 2 , and N 2 /CO 2 , while the breakdown strength decreases. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a three-dimensional laser confocal microscope were employed to observe uneven erosion morphology. Additionally, high-speed camera footage captures the arc bending and drifting phenomenon caused by Rayleigh-Taylor instability between the arc and gas. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis were utilized to characterize the composition of eroded surfaces. The problem of massive discharge of livestock wastewater is becoming more and more severe, causing irreversible damage to the ecological environment, and how to treat livestock wastewater efficiently and rapidly deserves to be studied in depth. In this work, CuO/granular activated carbon (GAC) loaded catalysts were prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption/desorption techniques, and X-ray energy spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that CuO was successfully attached to the GAC surface with good adsorption performance. The effects of catalyst dosage, H2O2 dosage, initial pH, microwave power and microwave irradiation time in different reaction systems on the degradation efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater were investigated, and the orthogonal experiments were used to explore the importance ranking of these factors. The highest degradation rate of COD was found to be enhanced by 12.1% in the reaction system of CuO/GAC, and the initial pH had the greatest effect on the COD removal rate. The combined MW/catalyst/H2O2 method used in this work provided a rapid and effective degradation of COD in wastewater, which can be helpful for reference in other microwave catalytic oxidation studies. This study presents the preparation of a long‐chain amine solution, employing the concept of urea‐formaldehyde synthesis. We also investigate the performance shifts in the cured product post‐urea addition. The Urea‐F curing agent is prepared by reacting EDA/DETA/TETA/TEPA, formaldehyde, and urea, and crosslinked with bisphenol A epoxy resin (E51). The crosslinking agent solves the problem of urea not being suitable for curing epoxy resin, and it improves the problem of low mechanical strength of traditional amine crosslinked epoxy resin cured materials. The cured product underwent evaluation through acid and alkali resistance solution measurement and mechanical and thermal tests. The results show enhanced heat resistance in the cured product, with its maximum thermal decomposition rate exceeding 350°C. The cured products have better mechanical properties than the amine monomers, with enhanced bending strength and superior acid–base solution resistance. This study looks at how erosive wear affects hybrid composites made by vacuum infusing glass and basalt fibers into an epoxy matrix. The study uses garnet abrasives and a design experiment method to test how resistant these hybrid composites are to erosion at 30°, 60°, and 90° angles of impact. The analysis included three‐dimensional profilometry and scanning electron microscopy. Results show that glass layers enhance erosion resistance, whereas basalt layers increase wear. Key quantitative findings include erosion rates and mass loss, highlighting impingement angle and erosion time as critical factors. At a 30° angle, basalt exhibited more severe wear (erosion rate: 0.8090 mg/g for 20 s) compared to glass (erosion rate: 0.5683 mg/g). Conversely, at 90°, the erosion rate for basalt decreased to 0.3643 mg/g, indicating a decreased sensitivity to this steeper angle. According to the ANOVA, impingement angle and erosion time account for 30.08% and 50.25% of the erosion rate variance, respectively. These findings advance our understanding of material behavior in hybrid composites and emphasize the strategic selection and layering of materials for enhanced durability. Introduction: Our work aims at establishing a proof-of-concept for a method that allows the early prediction of the bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects of antibiotics on bacteria using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as compared to traditional culture-based methods. Methods: We tested these effects using Imipenem (bactericidal) and Doxycycline (bacteriostatic) with several strains of sensitive and resistant Escherichia coli. We developed a SEM-based predictive score based on three main criteria: Bacterial Density, Morphology/Ultrastructure, and Viability. We determined the results for each of these criteria using SEM micrographs taken with the TM4000Plus II-Tabletop-SEM (Hitachi, Japan) following an optimized, rapid, and automated acquisition and analysis protocol. We compared our method with the traditional culture colony counting gold standard method and classic definitions of the two effects. Results: Our method revealed total agreement with the CFU method and classic definition by visualizing the effect of the antibiotic at 60 minutes and 120 minutes using SEM. Discussion: This early prediction allows a rapid and early identification of the bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects as compared to culture that would take a minimum of 18 hours. This has several future applications in the development of SEM-automated assays coupled to machine learning models that identify the antibiotic effect and facilitate determination of bacterial susceptibility. This research investigated the mechanical property and hydration process of sintered sludge cement (SSC) paste, focusing on the effects of calcination temperature of sludge, sintered sludge ash (SSA) content, curing age, and water‐binder ratio using isothermal calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and multiple regression. Increasing calcination temperature enhanced the compressive strength of SSC paste due to the decomposition of minerals like Clinochlore and Muscovite. The compressive strength decreased by 2.4%–49.4% when the SSA content increased from 0% to 50%, with more significant declines noted at higher water‐binder ratios. Notably, the 7‐day compressive strength of the cement paste with 10% SSA showed little change, and the 28‐day compressive strength actually increased at a water‐binder ratio of 0.4. SSA slowed down the hydration rate of cement and induced more Monocarbonate to form in the early stage. This research paper investigates the electrocatalytic mechanisms and ultra-trace detection abilities of uranyl ions (UO22+) using palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) electrodeposited in deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The unique properties of DESs, such as their adjustable viscosity and ionic conductivity, offer an advantageous and environmentally friendly medium for Pd nanoparticle electrodeposition, resulting in highly active and stable electrocatalysts. Various characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), were used to examine the morphology, size distribution, and crystallographic structure of the Pd nanoparticles. Electrochemical tests revealed that the Pd-modified electrodes show exceptional electrocatalytic activity and current sensitivity towards uranyl ions, with detection limits as low as 3.4 nM. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of the electrocatalytic reduction of UO22+ by the PdNPs, providing a plausible explanation for the high sensitivity of PdNPs in detecting uranyl ions based on the calculated structural parameters and reaction energetics. In this study a Co3O4–CuO bimetallic catalyst (referred to as CCO) was synthesized using the co-precipitation method. The structure of the catalyst was determined and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results provide evidence that the CCO bimetallic catalyst has been successfully prepared, and the surface was rich in oxygen vacancies (Ov). The effects of different factors on the removal of levofloxacin (LEV) by the CCO activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system were compared. In the CCO/PMS reaction system, LEV degradation was observed at 85% within 10 minutes and reached a total of 97% within an hour when the CCO dosage was maintained at 0.2 g L−1, the PMS dosage was at 0.8 g L−1, and the pH level was kept constant at 7. It was also proven that CCO could efficiently degrade LEV (degradation rate over 83%) within a wide pH range (pH = 3–11). Quenching studies demonstrated the predominant role of singlet oxygen (1O2) in LEV degradation, alongside contributions from sulfate (SO4˙−) and hydroxyl (˙OH) radicals. In situ liquid cell electron microscopy technology has high temporal and spatial resolution, enabling real-time observation of physical and chemical processes in liquid environments. However, the common in situ liquid cell scanning electron microscopy (LC-SEM) technology has faced limitations due to the relatively large thickness of the SiNx window, resulting in unsatisfactory resolution and limiting the broad adoption of the LC-SEM technology. This article represents one novel approach of utilizing ultra-thin SiNx windows for LC-SEM observation of the distribution and dynamic changes of gold (Au) nanoparticles/zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnO QDs)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) ternary composites in liquid. The results demonstrate a single/near-single dispersed distribution of ZnO QDs on the surface of the rGO, with Au nanoparticles and ZnO clusters mainly concentrated on the rGO folds. The composite structure demonstrates relative stability, attributed to electrostatic forces. Using Au nanoparticles and ZnO QDs as hierarchical reference markers, a high LC-SEM image resolution of ∼4 nm is obtained, which allows the observation and motion analysis of the Au nanoparticles, rGO nanosheets, and ZnO QDs in the liquid cell. Such LC-SEM technology shows good repeatability on the noble-metal/ZnO-QDs/rGO ternary composite samples, with good potential for future QD composite material research studies. A novel MOF named [Zn2(L)(DMF)] was synthesized using solvothermal methods from the reaction of the new linker (4,4′,4′′-(4,4′,4′′-(benzene-1,3,5-triyltris(methylene))tris(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-4,1-diyl))tribenzoic acid) and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O. This new MOF was characterized by means of different techniques: powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption and desorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, suitable crystals were obtained, which allowed us to perform the X-Ray structure determination of this MOF. The capability of these new MOF to adsorb CO2 at different temperatures was measured and its isosteric enthalpy of adsorption was calculated. The novel MOF shows an uncommon node composed of a Zn3(–COO)6(DMF)2, and the asymmetric unit contains one crystallographically independent linker, one DMF molecule, and two Zn atoms. The [Zn2(L)(DMF)] MOF is a microporous material with high crystallinity and stability up to 250 °C. The multiple nitrogenated pyrazole linkers in its framework enhance its CO2 adsorption capabilities. This material exhibits a low CO2 isosteric enthalpy of adsorption (Hads), comparable to previously reported values for similar nitrogenated materials. Cobalt ferrite–silica–gold nanocomposite (CoFe2O4@SiO2@Au) is synthesized using a new method involving: i) the polyol method for cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CoFe2O4), ii) the Stober method for silica coating, iii) surface functionalization with 3‐aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES), and iv) decoration with gold nanoparticles via tetrakis hydroxy‐methyl‐phosphonium (THPC) reduction. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirm the morphology of the nanoparticles and coatings for the nanocomposites. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) absorption spectra exhibit plasmon resonance peaks with tuned shifts, discuss in terms of the difference in dielectric permittivity in the core where gold nanoparticles are anchored. Magnetic hysteresis analysis reveals superparamagnetic behavior with reduced saturation magnetization for the nanocomposites. These findings are useful, as superparamagnetic behavior combined with control of plasmonic emission is highly relevant for several magneto‐plasmonic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
