The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the relationship between environmental, social and financial performance. In particular, based on the literature, we hypothesise the existence of a 'sand cone' model of sustainability that implies cumulative and sequential effects among the three performance dimensions. The hypothesis is tested using the fixed effects model on a longitudinal dataset of secondary data covering the period 2010–2019. The dataset includes 661 companies operating in the manufacturing industry and located in Europe, North America and Asia. The findings show that environmental, social and financial performance do not conflict but cumulate. The sequence of performance improvements that outlines a 'sand cone' starts with environmental sustainability and ends with financial performance, while social performance fully mediates the relationship between the two. Any other sequence is not confirmed by the data. These results are however valid only in Western countries (i.e. Europe and North America). Based on these findings, this research informs managers that the three pillars of sustainability have a cumulative effect, but only if a specific implementation sequence is followed. Object tracking is a challenging task which is required for different problems such as surveillance, traffic analysis and human-computer interaction. The problem of tracking an object can be considered in different categories such as single object tracking, multiple object tracking, short-term tracking, long-term tracking, tracking by detection and detection-free tracking. This study focuses on detection-free tracking for ground targets on aerial images. The studies in the literature show that correlation filter and deep learning based object trackers perform well recently. This paper proposes a new correlation filter-based tracker containing a strategy for re-detection issue. We improve the performance of correlation filter-based tracker by adding a lightweight re-detection ability to the correlation filter tracker in case of a long occlusion or complete loss of target. We use deep features to train Discriminative Correlation Filter(DCF) by integrating sub-networks from pre-trained ResNet and SAND models. The experimental results on the popular UAV123L dataset show that the proposed method(MADCF) improves the performance of DCF tracker and have a reasonable performance for long-term tracking problem. Moreover, we prepare a new tracking dataset (PESMOD tracking) consisting of UAV images, and we evaluate the proposed method and state-of-the-art method in this dataset. We observed that the proposed method performs much better in ground target tracking from VIVID and PESMOD aerial datasets. The proposed MADCF tracker performs better for small targets tracked by UAVs compared to the deep learning-based trackers. The penetration of renewable energy resources for distribution networks can significantly impact the security of power supply systems. To improve the penetration efficiency, a hierarchical optimization planning for a distributed generation (DG) network using the improved sand cat swarm optimization (ISCSO) is proposed to determine the optimal location and capacity of DG into the distribution network. Firstly, the sensor is used to collect data, and the ISCSO algorithm is used to construct a complex nonlinear DG planning problem, thus reducing the impact of DG uncertainty. Second, a DG hierarchical planning model is established to select the optimal location and capacity of DG access to the distribution network. Finally, in the classical test system, the effectiveness of the proposed model is verified by setting up multiple cases. The test results confirm that the total annual cost and power loss of the DG system can be reduced by 13.1 and 40.5%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the fact that scientists are aware that the streambed consists of various substrata in size, the estimation of benthic algal biomass has been conducted based almost exclusively on cobble sampling. This disparity in samples selected for the biomass estimation occurs because frame sampling collects all substrata, encompassed by the frame, including sand and stones, and is a time‐consuming method compared to single‐stone sampling. We conducted frame versus cobble sampling to test for sample selection disparity (SSD) in the estimation of benthic algal biomass. Estimates of algal biomass based on the frame sampling (area: 0.25 m2) were compared with those based on the cobble sampling taken at the same sampling points in a diatom‐dominated stream. Benthic algal biomass estimated based on cobble sampling was larger than the biomass estimated with frame sampling. The contribution of cobbles to the algal biomass encompassed by the frame was considerably higher than smaller substrata. These results suggest that cobble sampling tends to result in an overestimate of the benthic algal biomass in natural streams. Because the frame sampling requires intensive labor and time, we here proposed a general model based on quick visual assessments for percentage cover of cobbles on the streambed to calibrate estimates obtained by cobble sampling. This study examined the composition, distribution, and origins of rare, Noble, and fissionable elements for the first time in black sand deposits from the Northern Delta coastal region. The findings showed that among the elements under investigation, Fe, Ti, Mn, and Sn had the greatest mean levels, while Hf, Cd, and As had the lowest mean amounts. According to the study's elemental composition, black sand is thought to have economic worth for Ti, Zr, Hf, Sn, Ag, and W. The Zr, Co, Cd, Cu, Hf, V, W, and Zn correlation points to the same source origin. It is clear that the accessory mineral composition in the sediments under study especially the heavy ones controls the geochemical patterns of trace elements. The trace element concentrations of interest show a pattern of element variability related to the mineralogy of the sands, as indicated by the principal component analysis and cluster analysis. This article addresses the problem of vowel-generated glides in Kurpian. In general, glides come from two sources: Gliding and Glide Insertion, for instance, word-initial /#iVC/ → [jVC] and /#iC/ → [jiC], where V stands for a vowel and C for a consonant. Even though Gliding and Glide Insertion are different phonological operations, they are united by a single goal: to eliminate onsetless syllables because a glide, regardless of whether it comes from a vowel or from insertion, provides an onset to a syllable. Onset-driven effects are particularly rich in Kurpian because they involve all kinds of vowels, including /a/ but not /ɛ/, a situation that has not been noted in the past research on crosslinguistic typologies (Levi, Susannah V. 2004. We identified groups of mayfly species that share microhabitats in eastern Cuban streams by sampling during rainy and dry seasons in four microhabitats in pools (cobbles, sand, leaf litter and bank vegetation) and one microhabitat (cobbles) in riffles. A total of 20 species and three morphospecies were found. Species similarity in habitat use was analysed using k-means clustering. Overall, the highest number of individuals was collected in cobbles in riffles, followed by cobbles in pools. Five species groups, labelled from I to V, were identified based on their primary microhabitat use. Two groups (I and V) included species with a generalist pattern of habitat use, but differing in seasonality. Species in remaining groups tend to concentrate in specific microhabitats. Species of groups II and IV use mostly cobbles in riffles and in pools, respectively, while species in group III concentrate in sand during the rainy season. Slichter's model is a theoretical model that can be used for quantifying the permeability of non-cohesive materials. An inaccurate form of the equation has prevailed, undermining this model, which has been considered unreliable. This paper revises Slichter's work and proposes a corrected formulation of his equation by redefining key parameters such as the referential grain size, the porosity function, and the area of the pores. This approach was tested for poorly graded sands and well-graded sandy gravels in northern Croatia and a literature control group of heterogeneous sediments. The results were compared with permeabilities determined from: (1) pumping and slug tests, and (2) the well-established Hazen's experimental and Kozeny-Carman theoretical formulae. High correlativity between the different methods and with the field results confirmed the validity of the corrected Slichter's equation for predicting the permeability of non-cohesive materials, regardless of their gradation and mean geometric grain size. In this paper, a novel route for the utilisation of petroleum coke gasification ash in the preparation of autoclaved-aerated concrete (AAC) is presented. The waste ash along with quartz sand, cement, lime, and gypsum are used as the primary raw materials, with aluminium powder paste serving as the pore-forming agent. The effect of incorporating petroleum coke gasification ash on the dry density and thermal conductivity of the resulting AAC was investigated. The results indicate that the thermal insulation performance of AAC is significantly enhanced by reducing the thermal conductivity coefficient upon the addition of treated petroleum coke gasification ash. At a 40% ash content, the AAC exhibits remarkable performance that meet the requirements of A2.5B05 in GB 11,968-2006, with compressive strength higher than 2.5 MPa and dry density lower than 525 kg m−3. Furthermore, the study examined the optimal calcium silicon ratio after the addition of the ash, with the results demonstrating that AAC prepared with a ratio of 0.25–0.26 exhibits the best compressive strength and dry density. Cyclic resistance curves, derived through undrained element tests, are central to the study of liquefaction. Their use implies that water drainage is negligible during an earthquake. Nevertheless, a growing body of evidence suggests that this hypothesis is not realistic. In proximity to the interface of a liquefiable layer with an overlying lower permeability layer, upwards water flow can lead to localised, co-seismic pore volume increase. The aim of this paper is to quantify the effects of pore volume increase on cyclic resistance curves. Cyclic triaxial experiments are presented, performed under undrained conditions and under conditions of volumetric expansion. A constant inflow rate is chosen for the sake of simplicity. Results show that even small inflow rates have a detrimental effect on cyclic resistance. A simplified methodology is developed, which can estimate cyclic resistance under constant water inflow rates, by assuming a superposition of isotropic unloading and undrained cyclic shearing. The results presented add to increasing evidence on how current liquefaction susceptibility assessments might not be conservative for layered deposits. In the current study, the effects of cement or lime content, fibre content, partial cement or lime replacement with zeolite and curing time on the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of sand have been investigated. The results reveal that increasing cement or lime content increases Maximum Dry Density (MDD) and Optimum Water Content (OMC). However, increasing zeolite replacement percentage decreases MDD and OMC. Increasing the fibre content from 0 to 4% reduces the MDD and increases OMC. The optimum combination of the stabiliser and fibre has been derived from an array of tests. Results comparison shows the 0.5% fibre content and 8% stabiliser results in maximum effect. Also, the optimum percentage of 80% replacement of lime and 30% and 40% replacement of the cement with zeolite leads to the maximum UCS. Observing failure patterns demonstrates the influential performance of fibre content such as controlling the crack length and brittle behaviour. Due to the wide particle size distribution of coral sand, There are significant differences in mechanical behaviour of coral sand with different particle size distribution. It is of great significance to propose a quantitative analysis method for mechanical properties considering the effect of gradation. In this study, 27 groups of coral sand specimens with particle size ranging from 5 mm to 0.125 mm were prepared. The consolidated undrained (CU) triaxial shear tests were carried out and the influence of gradation and relative density on the shear characteristic were discussed. The grading and relative density of coral sand are controlled by the median particle size (d50) and relative density (Dr), The results show that the peak deviator stress decreased, and the effective internal friction angle first increased and then decreased with the increase of d50. Both the peak deviator stress and effective internal friction angle of coral sand increase with the relative density. A parabolic relationship was founded between the effect internal friction and d50 as Dr was constant. The effective friction angle peaked when d50 was 2 mm. Bonding of soil grains can be achieved by melting added polymer particles initially mixed with dry soil. Salient challenges associated with conventional external heating via boundary conduction include long treatment durations and inhomogeneous bonding. The current study aims to overcome these challenges via the use of microwaves to induce quick internal heating. Results of experiments on sand-silt specimens that contain a 10% fraction of natural microwave susceptor grains confirmed that internal heating produces homogeneous bonding much quicker than external heating (by a factor of 20), particularly when the target soil mass is relatively large. The tensile strength (qt) of specimens bonded via microwave heating was found to be inversely proportional to their fines content (FC), although the temperatures sustained by soils increased with increasing FC. Bonded specimens subject to a wetting–drying cycle exhibited lower tensile strengths than the unwetted counterparts. Yet, specimens subject to reexposure to microwaves after a wetting–drying cycle exhibited tensile strengths of at least 85% that of analogous unwetted specimens. The contraction behavior of monotonically expanded cavities is intriguing as it offers insights into certain geotechnical scenarios, especially for pressuremeter tests, where the unloading data is equally informative as the loading data. Despite many solutions for cavity expansion, attempts for the analyses of cavity contraction from an expanded state were rarely made. To extend previous solutions to include contraction, this paper presents a novel semianalytical solution for drained contraction of spherical and cylindrical cavities from an initially expanded state in soils characterized by a unified state parameter model for clay and sand (CASM). Given the nonself-similar nature of the contraction after expansion problems, the hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian (HEL) approach is employed to derive distributions and evolutions of stresses and strains around the cavities during the unloading process. Combined with the previous expansion solution, the complete loading-unloading cavity pressure curves and stress paths at the cavity wall are presented and verified against numerical simulations. Following validation through comparisons with calibration chamber pressuremeter tests conducted in Stockton Beach sand, a new method for the interpretation of pressuremeter testing data is developed based on the proposed solution. Urban Political Ecology (UPE) has explored human–soil relations, emphasising the political dimensions of environmental degradation in and through urbanisation. However, UPE lacks critical reflection on governance collusions with illicit actors. Bridging this gap, my paper combines UPE with literature on criminal urban governance, focusing on how urban sand shapes illicit urbanisation. To address UPE's oversight of criminal governance, I explore Rio de Janeiro's militias expanding their illegal portfolio through terrain modification, linking illicit activities to territorial control. Integrating criminal governance with UPE, I argue for the concept of Urban Illicit Ecologies (UIE). Urban sandscapes become multi‐sited, illicit geographies revealing imbrications of formal state and criminal actors, political dimensions, and inequalities in resource extraction and environmental processes. The stress–strain behavior of granular soils is related largely to their grain-size distributions and density. If sand particles are crushed under load, some basic physical and mechanical properties of sands will be changed to a certain extent, and the traditionally defined critical state is not unique in this crushing process. To describe the complex effects of particle breakage, the volumetric and shearing responses of crushable sands to compression-shear loading are attributed to the rearranging and crushing state (RCS) of sand particles. The interrelation between rearrangement and breakage of sand particles was analyzed phenomenologically as the physical basis of this study. To characterize the RCS over a large stress range, a special curve named the RCS curve is defined in the e–ln p plane and quantified through a specific loading path. A new breakage model is proposed to correlate the crushing stress with the breakage index and to control the evolution of the RCS-curve. To account for the state-dependent dilatancy of sand particles, a new state parameter called the RCS parameter is introduced into the plastic potential function. An elastoplastic model for crushable sands was established based on the evolution of the RCS and verified by relevant triaxial test data of three representative crushable sands with an initial confining pressure ranging from 50 kPa to 68.9 MPa. The stress–strain behavior, excess pore-water pressure, and accumulated particle breakage of these crushable sands were simulated satisfactorily. In light of its complicated makeup and fluctuating states of ice and salt crystals, it is challenging to forecast the strength of sodium sulfate saline sand. To examine the strength and deformation properties of sodium sulfate saline sand with various salt levels, many indoor triaxial shear tests were conducted at −2°C, −5°C, −8°C, and 25°C. The strength of sodium sulfate saline sand was found to be affected by temperature and the salt content, and the probable corresponding processes were then demonstrated. The introduction of the linear comparison composite (LCC) approach and homogenization theory led to the development of an upscaling strength model for sodium sulfate sand. Each phase's mechanical characteristics and the interactions between different components were taken into consideration. The triaxial tests of both unfrozen and frozen saline sand served as a basis for the developed strength prediction model's validation. Coral sand is known to have stress path dependence and fragility. In this research, a series of drained triaxial tests were conducted to explore stress path effects on the mechanical and particle breakage characteristics of coral sands. Several mechanical characteristics, such as critical state, strength, and dilatancy characteristics were studied. The results revealed that the dilatancy behaviors, stress-strain responses, and crushing of coral sands were strongly affected by consolidation stress and stress path. The critical state lines of coral sands were straight in p'-q space and e-(p'/Pa)0.44 plane regardless of stress path. Based on these characteristics, a dilatancy equation was derived and validated through test results. The accuracy of the constitutive model affects the precision of the finite element analysis. Four advanced sand constitutive models—the DM04 model, the SANISAND-MS model with memory surface (MS), the SANISAND-Sf model with semi-fluidized state (Sf), and the SANISAND-MSf model with both memory surface and semi-fluidized state—are examined in this article based on a comparison of simulation and experiment results of element tests. First, four constitutive models are implemented in OpenSees, and the constitutive models are calibrated based on the cyclic loading experiments of Karlsruhe fine sand. After that, the advantages and disadvantages of four constitutive models under different test conditions are analyzed. Finally, the finite element model of the LEAP-UCD-2017 (Liquefaction Experiments and Analysis Project, University of California Davis, 2017) centrifuge test is established to evaluate the performance of the four constitutive models for solving boundary value problems. Consequences are presented from flume experiments regarding bed scour at rock vanes and bendway weirs constructed of loose rock placed on sand bed channels. The experiments involved three flow discharges adjusted to replicate approximately the rising limb of a hydrograph and two bed-material sizes (a medium sand and a very coarse sand) subject to live-bed and clearwater scour. Observations show that these structures shortened due to rock dislodgement triggered by relatively modest contraction scour, which undermined the toe of the crest tip of these loose rock structures, causing the tips to become geotechnically unstable. Additionally, flow dislodgment of rock destabilized by tip slope failure further shortened the crest length of these structures and decreased tip slope. Displaced rock partially armored the scour zone and, thereby, affected scour depth and thalweg development. The experiments illustrated thalweg development as flow rate increased. Under various stress paths, the deformation characteristics represented great differences. In this paper, a series of cyclic triaxial tests have been conducted with Fujian standard sand. By comparing the constant deviatoric (CDS) and constant axial stress paths (CAS), the influence mechanism of the cyclic amplitude of the deviatoric stress was discussed. The test results showed that the stress path significantly influenced the volumetric and shear strains. The increasing and decreasing trend in the volumetric strain (ɛv) was consistent with the spherical stress (lnp). Compared with the two stress paths, the slope of the ɛv−lnp curve during the loading and unloading stages was larger under the CAS path. In the CDS path, qc almost did not affect the cumulative volumetric strain, and in the CAS path, the effect was obvious. The shear strain curve was in accordance with the direction of the stress path. As the cyclic number increased, the shear strain gradually accumulated. The shear strain accumulation under the CAS path was larger. The shear strain largely depended on the relative position between the critical state line (CSL) and the stress state of the soil during cyclic loading and unloading. Practical Applications: In practical engineering, the soil will experience various stress paths. For example, in slope or earth–rock dam engineering, where the water level rises and falls repeatedly, the soil often goes through the stress path of constant deviational stress with the cyclic increase and decrease in the spherical stress. In foundation pit engineering, the soil often experiences the stress path of the constant axial stress (CAS) with cyclic loading and unloading of the lateral stress. The stress path greatly influences the deformation and strength of soil. Therefore, the previous two stress paths are compared in this paper to discuss the influence of the cyclic amplitude of deviatoric stress. Under three different consolidation states, the cyclic amplitude of the deviatoric stress significantly influenced the volumetric and shear strains. The shear strain largely depended on the relative position between the critical state line (CSL) and the stress state of the soil during cyclic loading and unloading. Therefore, in practical engineering, if the stress path in the experiment differs from the actual value, the influence of the stress path should be properly considered. The main objective of this study was to investigate the response of uniform sand under constant volume (i.e., undrained) conditions and how it is influenced by the initial anisotropy induced in the soil fabric due to preshearing stress history. The experimental program explored a range of parameters, including stress–strain response, tendency to volume change, phase transformation, flow instability, noncoaxiality between stress and strain rate, and the critical state line. To induce initial anisotropy, samples were presheared along different directions and subsequently tested using an Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI)-type bidirectional direct simple shear apparatus. The testing program focused on the effects of initial anisotropy that were induced by preshearing, resulting from the application of initial shear stress in various directions relative to the subsequent shearing direction. To interpret the variations of stresses within the samples, Budhu's approach for stress state determination in simple shear specimens was adopted. The results demonstrate that the stress–strain behavior and global volume change tendency of the soil are heavily influenced by the magnitude and direction of the preshearing stress history. The mechanical properties of granular soils are significantly influenced by stress paths and particle breakage. In this study, a four-modulus incremental nonlinear model that incorporates the effects of the stress path and particle breakage was established based on an analysis of triaxial compression test results conducted on calcareous sands subjected to varying stress paths. A mathematical expression for this model and the process of determining its parameters was proposed. Subsequently, the model was experimentally verified. Our findings revealed that the isotropic compression consolidation volumetric strain modulus exhibited a curvilinear relationship with the average effective principal stress, whereas it demonstrated a linear correlation with the relative breakage index. Furthermore, a four-parameter nonlinear model was constructed, integrating the dilatancy equation to consider stress path effects and establishing a functional relationship between the stress ratio and shear strain. By comparing the experimental results with the calculated results for calcareous sands and rockfill materials, the model effectively simulated the stress ratio-axial strain behavior of granular soils under different stress paths. However, it failed to fully capture the volumetric strain-axial strain characteristics of granular soils after reaching the peak stress ratio. Most of the previous studies on the behavior of cemented sand were carried out under axisymmetric conditions. In this study, the failure and stress–strain behavior of cemented sand under plane strain conditions were investigated by drained plane strain tests. It was found that the behavior of cemented sand was much affected by its consolidation history, as the bonding began to break when the consolidated stress was larger than the yielding stress during coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest (K0) consolidation. The growth of the intermediate principal effective stress (σ2′) made the stress–strain curve stiffer and less dilative under plane strain than under axisymmetric conditions. The bonding mobilization during the test was analyzed using an energy-balance approach. The friction between the sand particles and the breaking of the cementation bonding was assumed to dissipate the work done on the cemented sand. The peak friction angle of the cemented sand was not influenced by the cement content (cc), while the effective cohesion increased with the amount of cementation, as indicated by the cc in a power function relationship. Investigate the effect of surface on frontal plane knee angle, knee moment and muscle activity. Randomised cross over. University Laboratory. Twenty females performed single-leg hop-landings onto sand, grass and firm surfaces. Kinematic, kinetic and muscle activity data were obtained. Compatibility curves were used to visualise parameter estimates alongside P - values, and S-value transforms. Knee angle for firm-sand (mean difference (d) ‾ = −2.2°; 95% compatibility interval (CI): −4.6 to 0.28, p = 0.083, s = 3.6) and firm-grass ( d ‾ = −1.9; 95% CI: −4.3 to 0.5, p = 0.125, S = 3) yielded <4 bits of reputational information against the null hypothesis (H). 5 bits (p = 0.025) of information against H were observed for knee moment between firm-sand ( d ‾ = 0.17 N m/kg-1. m-1; 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.31) with similar effects for firm-grass ( d ‾ = 0.14 N m/kg-1. m-1; 95% CI: −0.02 to 0.29, p = 0.055, S = 4). Muscle activity across surfaces ranged from almost no (S = 1) reputational evidence against H (Quadriceps and Hamstrings) to 10–13 'bits' against H for lateral gastrocnemius (lower on sand). The geological hazard of water–sand inrush is a matter of concern for infrastructure construction and resource exploration activities in China, due to the complex interplay between groundwater dynamics and the stability properties of sand particles. This phenomenon is characterized by its intensity, hazardous nature, and unpredictable behavior. Following comprehensive analysis, this study identifies the critical factors influencing water–sand inrush processes as fissure width, water stress (waterhead height), in-situ sand ground stress within the sand stratum, and clay content. To investigate these factors experimentally, a custom-designed hydraulically coupled water–sand inrush test apparatus was used. The apparatus was equipped with a cylinder to apply ground stress, a pneumatic diaphragm pump to regulate water stress, and a bottom opening in the sand layer. Tests were conducted to investigate the dynamic response of water–sand inrush events under various combinations of factor levels. The findings revealed that the critical value for inrush is only present in the fissure width, which was observed to be 3 mm for the tested sand material. Unlike fissure width, the other factors do not have definitive critical values but instead modulate the intensity of the inrush process without determining its occurrence. The 'inrush rate' serves as a measure of the severity of water–sand inrush disasters and shows a linear increase with both increasing groundwater stress and fissure width, a negative exponential function relationship between the inrush rate and the clay content. Notably, ground stress does not exert a significant influence on the intensity of the inrush process itself. Under constant conditions, the inrush rate remains relatively constant across different levels of sand ground stress, for instance, in the experiments, the inrush rate was measured at 1.606 kg/s when the water stress was 0.1 MPa and the fissure width was 5 mm. Grey relation analysis was used to examine the sensitivity of each factor's influence on the inrush rate. The results showed that water stress has the greatest impact on the intensity of water–sand inrush, followed by ground or soil stress, clay content, and the width of the fissures in the sand layer. This study explores how the ice cover on water surfaces affects the deformation of the channel bed around non-submerged spur dikes. Laboratory experiments have been conducted by using two types of model ice cover with different roughness coefficients and three sands with different median grain sizes. The effects of various layout angles of non-submerged spur dikes on the maximum scour depth and scour patterns around spur dikes have been evaluated. Results showed that the dike orientation angle is the critical factor influencing the maximum scour depth. The presence of an ice cover and its roughness coefficient dramatically affect the channel bed deformation around spur dikes. The combined effect of the dike orientation angle, ice cover roughness, and flow Froude number resulted in different scour patterns. For instance, the upstream length of scour holes decreases by approximately 60% when the dike angle changes from 90º to 60º, while an increase in flow rate by about 50% leads to a 20% increase in the downstream length of scour holes. Several studies have reported substantial increases in the shaft capacity of driven steel piles in the months following installation. This study investigates factors influencing this time dependence of shaft capacity by conducting a series of field tests on piles and a parallel series of interface shear tests using a newly developed apparatus. The piles and interfaces used in the experiments employ mild steel, stainless steel, and galvanized steel, while the aging periods allowed in the laboratory and field were 1 and 3 years, respectively. Chemical analyses of the crusts that developed at the sand–steel interfaces are reported. It is shown that the aging characteristic of sand-steel friction depends on the relative contributions of interlocking and dilation but is controlled by dilation at the crust–sand interface adjacent to the shaft of a driven pile. There is no gain in shaft friction with time in dry sand or for piles with non-reactive steel. This study focuses on the development and testing of a bio-inspired self-burrowing dual anchor soft probe for potential geotechnical applications. Dual anchor refers to the form of movement in soils in which some bivalve molluscs adopted by alternately generating anchoring effects in the soil through shell expansion and fluid-filled feet. By mimicking this mechanism, this study used pneumatic artificial muscles as soft actuators and developed an autonomous burrowing probe. The structure and the performance of the actuators and the probe were investigated and optimized. The burrowing-out process of the dual anchor probe was not a simple upward movement. Instead, it rose in the inflation phase and slipped downward in the deflation phase. The difference between the two was a stride in one single step. In the sands with relative densities of 30%, 50%, and 80%, the total slips accounted for 18.8%, 19.6%, and 26.9% of the total upward movements, respectively. Thus, the entire movement process showed a reciprocating upward trend. The burrowing process could be divided into a restricted stage and a free stage according to whether shear failure occurs in the overlying soil layer. When the soil density was high, the initial stage of burrowing was in a restricted stage. The amount of rise and slip were at a low level and increased slowly as the number of cycles increased. The sex-specific differences in the growth and population characteristics of the high-commercial-value sand crab Ovalipes punctatus were investigated in Korea. The estimated allometric growth between the sexes showed significant differences in all morphometric measurements. In the classification of growth types, carapace width-chela length exhibited positive and negative allometric growth in males and females, respectively. Carapace width-abdominal width showed positive relative growth in both sexes, and orbital spine width exhibited negative relative growth in both sexes. Consequently, sexual dimorphism was evident in all measured traits. Growth parameters estimated using the ELEFAN function of the FiSAT II program indicated higher values in males compared to females. Asymptotic length (CW∞) for males was estimated at 139.2 mm, whereas for females it was 116.6 mm. Additionally, the growth coefficient (K) was higher in males (0.65) than in females (0.54), suggesting faster growth in males. The winter point (WP) was 1 for males and 0.7 for females, indicating slower growth in males during the colder December and slower growth in females during the spawning period in August. The modified von Bertalanffy growth curves indicated asymptotic growth in all sexes, and the growth performance index (φ') showed higher values in males (4.10) compared to females (3.87), reflecting differences in growth curves. The steady increase in recruitment rates from July to September was associated with the appearance of larvae and their subsequent growth into juveniles, leading to their recruitment into the population during this period. In order to study the tensile properties of rock-concrete composite disc specimens with different roughness, the surface of the gray-white sand specimen was artificially grooved, and six different roughness were configured. The test results show that the roughness size and roughness mode jointly control the tensile strength of the rock-concrete interface. With the increase of roughness, the tensile strength of the sample changes from the initial decrease to the increase and then decrease, and the tensile strength reaches the highest when the roughness is f3. The variation trend of pre-peak energy accumulation and post-peak energy accumulation of the sample is opposite, and the dissipation energy is closely related to the crack propagation strain. The roughness and crack closure strain, crack peak strain, crack propagation strain and crack closure stress show a sinusoidal periodic variation. The crack propagation strain is closely related to the change of dissipation energy. The change trend of crack closure stress is basically consistent with the change trend of tensile strength. Therefore, in the actual project, grasping the period of roughness variation and selecting the construction position can make the rock-concrete interface stable and get twice the result with half the effort. This study reports satellite evidence for the most northerly blown dust activity yet observed on Earth. A systematic inspection of high‐resolution satellite imagery identified active dust events and their sources >82°N in Peary Land, Greenland. In the absence of any local weather measurements, for all observed dust activity a focus period in April 2020 with multiple dust plumes, reanalysis climate data found the majority of dust events to be associated with wind speeds exceeding a typical threshold value for blowing sand and dust uplift. High velocity oxyfuel coatings have been sprayed on aluminium (Al) alloy composites substrate with varying coating thickness and tested for their wear behavior. The density and micro‐ hardness of the coatings found to increase with increase in coating thickness. The air erosion wear test has been conducted using quartz sand of size up to 75 μm as erodent. The steady state experiments indicate that the greatest specific erosion rate is at 60° and minimum at 30°. Due to the presence of interlayer, specific erosion rate decreases with the increase in the thickness of the coatings. Surface topography of the eroded samples indicate a decrease in surface roughness with increase in impact velocity. Thereafter, Taguchi (L16) orthogonal array has been utilized in order to optimize the input parameters. Analysis of variance has been applied to determine the contribution of individual control factors. The results from Taguchi experiments and analysis of variance find the order of dominance of control factors and their individual contribution as: velocity (47.31 %) > coating thickness (29.94 %) > angle (13.26 %) > erodent feed rate (7.65 %). In this research paper, we introduce a novel and sustainable approach for forecasting the hydraulic conductivity of sand layers subjected to microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) to mitigate the diffusion of toxic pollutants. The proposed model uniquely integrates the impact of varying CaCO3 contents on the void ratio and estimates the average particle size of CaCO3 crystals through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. By incorporating these parameters into the K-C equation, a simplified predictive model is formulated for assessing the hydraulic conductivity of MICP-treated sand layers. The model's effectiveness is validated through comparison with experimental data and alternative models. The outcomes demonstrate a substantial reduction in hydraulic conductivity, with a decrease ranging between 93 and 97% in the initial assessment and a decrease between 67 and 92% in the follow-up assessment, both at 10% CaCO3 content. Notably, the hydraulic conductivity shows an initial sharp decrease followed by stabilization. These findings provide valuable insights into improving the prediction of hydraulic conductivity in MICP-treated sand layers, promoting a sustainable method for preventing pollution dispersion. Sand is frequently used as a fine aggregate in concrete mixtures, but the performance of concrete can be considerably impacted by regional variations in sand gradation. In this work, the effect of sand gradations on the fresh properties of three-dimensionally printable concrete (3DPC) mixtures was systematically investigated. The binder combinations (cement, fly ash, silica fume, limestone powder, ground granulated blast-furnace slag) and the water/binder ratio were kept constant throughout the trials. The sands used in the mixtures were standard Ennore sand (ES) (grades I, II and III) and locally available river sand (RS). The mini-slump heights and flow values of mixes made with RS and with optimal packing of binary and ternary combinations of the standard ESs were evaluated and compared with those of the unary packing of ESs and RS. A correlation between the fineness modulus of different sand gradations and printable flow time was determined. The influence of sand gradations and fineness modulus on buildability, shape retention, open time and extrudability were evaluated. It was found that the performance of the fresh 3DPC was influenced by the aggregate's gradation and grain size in addition to its fineness. In the article, the authors presented the results of research on the assessment of the effect of selected mineral additives on the strength properties of the standard mortar. The modification of the composition of the standard mortar made on the basis of CEM I 42.5R cement and quartz sand consisted of using seven selected mineral additives in the form of compacted microsilica, Mikrosill microsilica, limestone flour, glass flour, glass granulate, basalt flour, and fly ash in the amounts of 10 and 20% in relation to cement as its substitute. Reducing the share of cement in the standard mortar by 10% has a beneficial effect on improving the compressive strength by over 40% with the addition of microsilica, and in the case of bending strength, even by 10%. This paper examines the application of non-synthetic particle suspensions as a support medium for the additive manufacturing of complex doubly curved ceramic shells with overhangs between 0° and 90° using clay paste. In this method, the build-up material is injected within a constant volume of air-permeable particle suspension. As the used clay paste does not solidify right after injection, the suspension operates like a support medium and enables various print path strategies. Different non-synthetic suspension mixtures, including solid and flexible components such as quartz sand, refractory clay, various types of wood shavings, and cotton flocks, were evaluated for their ability to securely hold the injected material while allowing drying of the water-based clay body and its shrinkage. The balance between grain composition, added water, and the compressibility of the mixture during printing and drying played a pivotal role in the particle suspension design and assessment. Furthermore, the moisture absorption of the particle suspension and the structural integrity of the layer bond of the fired ceramics were also assessed. The examined additive manufacturing process not only enables the production of meso-scale doubly curved ceramic shells with average overhang of 56° but also introduces a new practice for designing specialized surfaces and constructions. The structured sand presents significant interparticle bonding and anisotropy, resulting in significant differences in the physical and mechanical properties from the pure sand. This study proposes a new surrogate model based on the concept of multi‐fidelity residual neural network (MR‐NN) as an alternative to DEM simulation for predicting the mechanical behaviours of structured sand with different initial anisotropy and saving largely computational costs. The model is initially trained using low‐fidelity (LF) data to focus on capturing the main underpinning correlations between macroscopic mechanical parameters with inter‐particle properties and anisotropic state variables (i.e., microscopic fabric and tilting angle of sand), where the LF data are generated from previously proposed anisotropic macro‐micro quantitative correlation. Subsequent training on sparser high‐fidelity (HF) data is used to calibrate and refine the model with HF data generated from DEM simulations for anisotropic structured sand. Feedforward neural network (FNN) is adopted as the baseline algorithm for training models. The macroscopic anisotropic parameters of structured sand predicted by the surrogate model are compared with DEM simulations to examine its feasibility and generalization ability. Furthermore, the robustness of the surrogate model is examined by discussing the effect of LF data on the performance of MR‐NN. The superiority of the MR‐NN is further verified by comparing the performance of the trained MR‐NN with the one‐shot trained FNN based on the same HF data. The use of solid waste such as coal and biomass co-fired fly ashes and sewage sludge fly ash instead of clay and other non-renewable resources to produce lightweight aggregates (LWAs) is conducive to sustainable development. In this study, the effects of co-fired fly ashes, sewage sludge fly ash and quartz sand proportion, sintering temperature and sintering time on the physical properties and microstructure of LWAs are studied by single factor experiment. Experimental results show that the optimal experiment conditions are the raw material ratio of co-fired fly ashes: sewage sludge fly ash: quartz sand = 9: 1: 4, 2 wt% SiC as an expansion agent, and sintering at 1060 °C for 10 min. The LWAs obtained under the above conditions have a bulk density of 0.85 g/cm3, an apparent density of 1.84 g/cm3, a 1-h water absorption of 2.71 %, and a compressive strength of 8.68 MPa, which are in accordance with the GB/T17431.1–2010 standard. Besides, the heavy metal immobilization effect of the LWAs is satisfying, where the heavy metal leaching concentrations meet the standard of GB5085.3–2007. In conclusion, it is feasible to use the raw materials to prepare the LWAs under the above sintering conditions, and the prepared LWAs have high strength and low water absorption. AbstractTraditional vacuum combined with surcharge preloading (TVSP) is commonly used for treating soft ground. However, the extensive use of sand as a horizontal drainage system poses a challenge due to its high demand for infrastructure construction and land reclamation. The straight-line vacuum combined with surcharge preloading (SVSP) is a technical improvement and innovation of the TVSP. It eliminates the sand cushion with the PVDs being directly connected to the vacuum pump through the main and branch pipes. This case presents the initial application of the SVSP for expressway ground treatment. The results indicate that the vacuum pressure in SVSP is 11 kPa greater than in TVSP. The SVSP induces a higher consolidation degree and higher settlement of soil ground. The higher vacuum pressure in the ground treated by SVSP also leads to a faster dissipation rate and a lower value of porewater pressure. Removing the sand cushion alters the boundary conditions for ground consolidation, leading to a lower consolidation degree for shallow ground than TVSP, and a higher consolidation degree for deep ground. To clarify the influence range and saturation distribution after the biogas desaturation method is applied, a three-dimensional model is established with TOUGH2 software to analyze the effect of construction parameters such as grouting volume, grouting rate, grouting depth, nitrogen source concentration, and soil porosity. ABSTRACT Wind‐blown sand movements induce desertification and cause various environmental problems. This study investigates the rebound probability of sand particles during sand transport. The widely used rebound probability models are essentially empirical and the mechanism that generates non‐rebounding particles remains unclear. By tracking the grain–bed collision process of impact particles in steady‐state sand flows, it was observed that non‐rebounding particles undergo repetitive collisional momentum losses within the rheological layer of the sand bed. Therefore, rebound probability models based on the incident velocity and angle cannot realistically describe rebound probability. Furthermore, the rheological sand bed produces numerous rebound particles with a coefficient of restitution above 1.0, converting the normal distribution of the coefficient of restitution into a lognormal distribution pattern with considerably larger variances. To elucidate the time-dependent swelling behavior of landfill sand-bentonite mixture liners under the effect of organic pollutants, an no loading swelling ratio test was conducted on mixtures with varying sand and diesel content. The evolution characteristics of the swelling time curve morphology were investigated. The micro-mechanisms underlying the swelling time effect evolution were explored. The results indicated that the sand-diesel interaction significantly altered the swelling time curve morphological characteristics of the mixture. As the sand content increased, the swelling coefficient at the stable state decreased. However, during the rapid swell phase, dieselcontaminated mixed soil does not exhibit the increase-then-decrease pattern in swell coefficient seen in unpolluted mixed soil. The duration of both the slow swelling phase and the time to reach a stable state were longer. Mechanistic analysis revealed that cation exchange capacity is insufficient to effectively analyze the evolution characteristics of the swelling time curve. Instead, the initial swelling potential of bentonite is the true indicator of the mixture’s swelling properties. The particle size distribution influences the changes in the swelling coefficient during the rapid swelling phase, but diesel alters the particle size distribution, mitigating its impact. The oil sealing effect within intra-aggregate and inter-aggregate pores not only weakened the swelling characteristics of the mixture at all stages but also increased the permeability resistance, thereby reducing the duration of the rapid swelling phase and extending the slow swelling and stable swelling phases. The demand for consumption vegetables, especially romaine lettuce, can be balanced with hydroponic-based production which can optimize the area of land to produce maximum production with good quality. Increasing the efficiency of romaine lettuce production using substrate hydroponics can be increased by using the combination of the growing media and the intervals of nutrients. This research aims to study the interaction between the combination of growung media and the interval of nutrients and to study the effect of these two factors on the growth and yield of romaine lettuce in a substrate hydroponic system. The research was conducted from April to June 2023 at the Angkasa Greenhouse, AR Saleh Air Base Complex, Pakis District, Malang Regency. This research used a factorial randomized block design (FRBD) with 9 treatments of a combination of growing media and AB mix nutrient solution intervals with 3 replications. The results showed that there was an interaction between the combination of growing media and the interval of AB mix nutrition on the leaf area per plant and root length. The combination of husk charcoal and cocopeat gave higher yields on the total fresh weight, root fresh weight, crown fresh weight, and consumption fresh weight compared to other treatments. Interval treatment of AB mix once every 2 days gave the same results compared to the interval of giving AB mix once every 1 day on the canopy width and leaf chloropyll content so that the interval of giving AB mix every 2 days was considered more efficient. This paper presents a comprehensive three-dimensional numerical investigation of horizontal square anchors embedded in geogrid-reinforced sand. Prior experimental studies have demonstrated notable enhancements in anchor uplift capacity when placed below geogrid reinforcement in soil. However, these results are limited to small anchor plates tested in laboratory conditions with over-reinforced sand. In contrast, this study focuses on large field-scale anchors and explores the influence of anchor width, embedment depth, reinforcement size, stiffness, and tensile strength on uplift capacity. The findings reveal that the optimal size for geogrid reinforcement is three times the anchor width. A diminishing improvement in uplift capacity with increasing anchor width was observed. Additionally, deeper anchor embedment reduces the uplift capacity improvement in geogrid-reinforced sand. The geogrid reinforcement is found to be more efficient in the case of shallow anchors placed in loose sand. To enhance the mechanical properties and stability of desert railway embankments, the utilization of geogrids has proven to be an effective measure. The article conducted field tests and discrete element simulations to thoroughly examine the static performance of embankments reinforced with geogrids. The study systematically explored the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the geogrid-reinforced embankment under static loading. Various factors were investigated, including the horizontal laying arrangements and depth to the top layer of the geogrid, as well as key design parameters such as the number of geogrid layers, geogrid width, and vertical spacing between geogrid layers. The findings indicate a progressive enhancement in the ultimate bearing capacity of the embankment with an increase in both the number of geogrid layers and the geogrid width. Conversely, there is a decrease in ultimate bearing capacity as the depth to the top layer increases. In comparison to unreinforced embankments, reinforced embankments exhibit a reduced contact anisotropy, signifying that the geogrid effectively disperses static loads, resulting in a more uniform contact distribution. The geogrid restrains both displacement and rotation of the aeolian sand, and this restraining effect progressively strengthens with an increase in the number of geogrid layers or the geogrid width. Reinforcing calcareous sands with geogrids is a potentially effective method for large-scale geotechnical constructions in coastal lands. The breakable nature of polygonal calcareous sands determines the complex particle-geogrid interactions. A three-dimensional numerical model of geogrid reinforced calcareous sand (GRCS) was established to investigate the potential mechanical laws based on the discrete element method (DEM), and the reasonableness of the numerical model was verified by comparing with the indoor triaxial test. It follows that the macro-microscopic mechanical behavior of GRCS under the influence of aperture size and tensile resistance of geogrids was further investigated via effective DEM simulations. The presented results show that the decreased aperture size and increased tensile resistance are beneficial to enhance the macro-mechanical properties of GRCS, including strength, internal friction angle and pseudo cohesion. Particle crushing is mainly affected by shear strain and confining pressure. The bulging deformation of GRCS is partially suppressed due to the confining effect of geogrids. Besides, the source of strength enhancement of GRCS is revealed based on the microscopic particle-geogrid interactions, and the calculation method of horizontal and vertical additional stresses in the reinforced soil element considering the effects of tensile resistance and aperture size is further established. • A DEM model is established for geogrid reinforced calcareous sand. • Aperture size and tensile resistance effects are considered. • The distribution and evolution of particle crushing are characterized. • The macro-micro mechanical behavior of GRCS is revealed. • An additional stress calculation method is developed.
