Salvia sclareoides is a plant of spontaneous Portuguese vegetation that has relevant properties, as part of its cholinergic action and in the prevention of the formation of amyloid plaques. Previous studies suggested [1,2] that this species of Salvia can be used as a functional food and also in the development of a food supplement in the context of the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Sweet cookies were developed with different concentrations (2 % and 5 %) of S. sclareoides, previously ground for particle size reduction (2.00 mm). The nutritional composition was determined, namely: moisture content, ash, total protein, total fat, dietary fibre and salt [3]. The available carbohydrates and the energy value were obtained by calculation. Extracts were prepared from the dried aerial parts of the plant. Different extraction methodologies were used and the phenolic profile of each extract was determined by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. The antioxidant and anticholinesterase activities of these extracts were also evaluated. The ethanol extract of S. sclareoides, with 2.00 mm grain size, presented the highest concentration of phenolic compounds (143.74 mg GAE/g dry extract) and antioxidant activity (68.45 %), while the aqueous extract showed the best anticholinesterase activity (30.86 %). The glycosylated flavonoids rutin and (7-O-glucosyl)luteolin are clearly the major constituents present in all extracts, along with epicatechin, ellagic acid and (7-O-glucosyl)naringenin. The nutritional composition of the cookies was determined, namely: fatty acid profile3, moisture content, ash, total protein, total fat3, dietary fibre and salt3. The available carbohydrates and the energetic value were obtained by calculation. Ethanol extracts from the salty cookies were prepared to evaluate the antioxidant (DPPH) and anticholinesterase (Ellman method) activities. Total phenolic content was evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteu1 method and the phenolic composition was analysed by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. The ethanol extracts of the cookies with 5% of S. sclareoides showed the best acetylcholinesterase inhibition (44.4%), the highest concentration of phenolic compounds (22.78 mg GAE/g dry extract), and antioxidant activity (10.3%). The flavonoids rutin and (7-O-glucosyl)luteolin are clearly the major constituents present in the extracts, along with epicatechin, ellagic acid, and (7-O-glucosyl) naringenin. The incorporation of this plant in the cookies formulation resulted in a pleasant and nutritionally interesting functional product with potential application in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. Objective: To determine the chemical composition, antioxidant activity and antibacterial properties of essential oils of the aerial parts of Salvia sclareoides (S. sclareoides). Methods: The essential oil of the areal parts of S. sclareoides was obtained by using hydrodistillation method and the composition of the volatile components analyzed by gas chromatography method coupled with mass spectrometry detector. The antimicrobial capacity of the essential oil of S. sclareoides was investigated by microdilution technique. The antioxidant activities were determined employing inhibition of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate radical method. Results: Mass spectra were searched against mass spectrometry databases and sixty components were recognized. Non-terpenoids (41.6%) and sesquiterpenes (39.7%) were determined as the main components of the essential oil. The main identified components were, linalool (27.6%), transcaryophyllene (16.6%), beta.-trans-ocimene (11.831%), germacrene-D (10%), bicyclogermacrene (3.3%) and caryophyllene oxide (2.8%). Two monoterpens (13.2%) and three oxygenated sesquiterpenes (5.5%) were also obtained from the essential oil of the S. sclareoides. In addition, results of our study supported the significant antioxidant activity of essential oil of S. sclareoides and potential use as a source of natural antioxidants. The essential oil of S. sclareoides aerial parts remarkably inhibited the growth of all tested microorganisms with the exception of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Conclusions: Results indicated that essential oil of S. sclareoides includes rather higher proportions of non-terpenoid and sesquiterpenes compounds with good antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

New data on the distribution and trophic associations are given for three eurytomid species: Eurytoma infracta Mayr, Eu. salvicola Zerova, and Systole (Trichosystole) cuspidata Zerova. Eurytoma infracta and S. (T.) cuspidata were reared in Portugal, the first species from Cynipid galls on Salvia sclareoides Brot. (Lamiaceae), the second, from seeds of the same plant. Eurytoma salvicola Zerova was found for the first time in France, having being reared there from galls of Oxyacina tibialis R.-D. (Diptera, Tephritidae) on Rosmarinus officinalis L.

Plants belonging to the genus Salvia (Lamiaceae) are known to have a wide range of biological properties. In this work, extracts obtained from the aerial parts of Salvia sclareoides Brot. were evaluated to investigate their chemical composition, toxicity, bioactivity, and stability under in vitro gastrointestinal conditions. The composition of the supercritical fluid extract was determined by GC and GC-MS, while the identification of the infusion constituents was performed by HPLC-DAD and LC-MS. The in vitro cytotoxicity of both extracts (0-2 mg/mL) was evaluated in Caco-2 cell lines by the MTT assay. The anti-inflammatory and anticholinesterase activities were determined through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 and acetylcholinesterase enzymes, while β-carotene/linoleic acid bleaching test and the DPPH assays were used to evaluate the antioxidant activity. The infusion inhibited cyclooxygenase-1 (IC50 = 271.0 μg/mL), and acetylcholinesterase (IC50 = 487.7 μg/ mL) enzymes, also demonstrated significant antioxidant properties, as evaluated by the DPPH (IC50 = 10.4 μg/mL) and β-carotene/linoleic acid (IC50 = 30.0 μg/mL) assays. No remarkable alterations in the composition or in the bioactivities of the infusion were observed after in vitro digestion, which supports the potential of S. sclareoides as a source of bioactive ingredients with neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties., This work was supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), Project UID/MULTI/00612/2013 and UID/QUI/50006/2013. Estudo de produção agronómica de espécis da salvia com vista à avaliação dos seus constituintes para o potencial controlo da doença de Alzaimer Salvia sclareoides is an aromatic herb native to Portugal, of which phenolic content (Folin–Ciocalteau method), chemical profile (HPLC/DAD), antioxidant activity (DPPH, β-carotene/linoleic acid assays), acute toxicity (MTT method, adapted for non-adherent cells), genotoxicity (short-term chromosomal aberration assay) and prion binding properties were evaluated in the acetone, water, ethanol, methanol and n-butanol extracts. The latter presented the highest phenolic content and antioxidant activity (DPPH assay), and was the single one with the flavonoids (+)-catechin, kaempferol O-glucoside and quercetin. Vanillic acid was the major component of all extracts but gallic, gentisic, caffeic, syringic, coumaric and ferulic acids were also found in some extracts. Only the n-butanol extract had components binding to the cellular form of human prion protein detected by NMR which showed specificity for two regions of the folded domain and for the unstructured N-terminal region. Extracts were not cytotoxic nor genotoxic, reinforcing the potential of S. sclareoides for nutraceutical purposes. In addition, nepetidin (2), nepeticin (3), lupendiol (4), (1β,11α)-dihydroxy-lup-20(29)-en-3-one (5), ursolic acid (6), sumaresinolic acid (7) and hederagenin (8), were identified in this Salvia sp. To the best of our knowledge, the compounds 2 and 7 are new constituents in Salvia spp. The acetone, ethanol, butanol and water extracts of the plant were screened for the in vitro inhibitory activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrilcholinesterase (BChE), enzymes which play a role in the Alzheimer disease. All extracts inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity at 10 μg/ml, a remarkable activity since the standard drug rivastigmine does not inhibit acetylcholinesterase at the same concentration.
