Pneumonia is a common disease affecting Alpine chamois. However, little is known concerning the etiological agents involved. We investigated whether Mycoplasma spp. infection occurs in Alpine chamois and describe the microscopic lesions associated with Mycoplasma-associated bronchopneumonia in this species. Lung tissues obtained from 45 chamois with gross evidence of pneumonia were analysed. The histological lesions and the presence of lungworms within the lungs were evaluated blindly. The presence of Mycoplasma spp. was assessed by immunohistochemistry (Mycoplasma bovis and Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides) and by end-point PCR. M. bovis was detected by immunohistochemistry and confirmed by PCR and sequencing in 6/45 (13%) cases, while all lungs were negative for M. mycoides subsp. mycoides. A significant association was found between the detection of M. bovis and the presence of severe lungworms infection in the examined lungs. We report for the first time M. bovis as a bacteria associated with verminous pneumonia in chamois.

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes are commonly used markers for monitoring adaptive genetic and evolutionary potential of species. In this study, we investigated genetic variation of the MHC class II DRB locus in the chamois genus Rupicapra by using next-generation sequencing. Sequencing of 102 samples led to the identification of 25 alleles, 11 of which are novel. The high ratio of the relative rates of nonsynonymous to synonymous mutations (dN/dS) suggests a signal of positive selection on this locus. We analyzed patterns of genetic variation within and among 2 subspecies of Northern Chamois and compared them to previously published studies using neutral markers to provide a basis for assessing the effects of demographic processes. Our analyses have shown that alleles are likely to be maintained by balancing selection in different populations with similar frequencies and that this mechanism also works in small, isolated populations that are strongly affected by genetic drift. Abstract Background Alterations in weather patterns due to climate change are accelerated in alpine environments, but mountains also provide a wide range of niches and potential refuge areas. In order to identify future critical habitat for mountain ungulates for effective protection, it is important to understand their spatial responses to changing weather conditions without movement constraints by human disturbance. Methods Using integrated step selection functions, we investigated fine-scale changes in seasonal habitat use in response to weather and time of day for 55 GPS-collared adult Alpine chamois in summer and 42 individuals in winter in a strictly protected area. Results Chamois reacted to increasing precipitation and wind speeds primarily by moving to lower elevations in summer and winter. However, reactions to high summer temperatures predominantly involved preferences for increasing tree cover density and northerly slopes. Snow depth had little effect on habitat choice, and southerly slopes were preferred in winter regardless of temperature. At night, chamois moved to steeper slopes and lower elevations than during daytime in both seasons, and to more open areas in summer. Steeper slopes were also preferred with increasing tree cover density. Conclusions Chamois employ adaptive fine-scale adjustments in their habitat choice consistent with respect to efficient thermoregulation and protection from both weather extremes and predation risk in summer and winter. Movement responses to climate change are therefore expected to be far more complex than simple altitudinal changes in distribution. Particularly the role of forest cover must not be underestimated, as it appears to provide important thermal refuge habitat from high summer temperatures.

The chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) is one of the primary mammals on the territory of Romania that still exists nowadays, but one which has restricted its suitable living habitat to alpine and subalpine areas due to global warming and the influence of anthropic factors (poaching, excessive grazing). The main aim of the present study consists of the ecological diagnosis of the fields in the Romanian Carpathians suitable for the chamois by using tools for mapping, as well as the statistical and mathematical analysis of the GIS technology. In order to determine field favorability modelling for the chamois, we used both knowledge expert-type data and official assessments of real actual numbers of specimens, but also, a complete database regarding the main biotic factors (topographic characteristics, hydrographic network, climate characteristics); abiotic factors (the existence of pastures, shrubby and forest vegetation, as well as the presence of feeding areas during winter), and anthropic factors (grazing, mountain tourism). All the hunting grounds at the level of the mountainous area in Romania was analysed in a qualitative and quantitative manner while taking into account the favorability and restriction character of these factors. To validate the modelling results that were obtained, the data from 97 hunting grounds where the chamois is present were used. The main results highlighted the territories situated in the massifs: Rodnei, Retezat, Făgăraş, Pietrosul Maramureşului as being territories that provide the best conditions for Rupicapra rupicapra. With these studies at our disposal, researchers may indirectly evaluate the genetic diversity of the species that are already present as well as the repopulation of the Romanian Carpathians' most advantageous areas. Non‐invasive genetic sampling (NGS) methods are becoming a mainstay in wildlife monitoring and can be used with spatial capture‐recapture (SCR) methods to estimate population density. Yet SCR based on NGS remains relatively underused for ungulate population monitoring, despite the importance of robust density estimates for this ecologically and economically important group of species. This may be in part attributed to biological characteristics of ungulate species and data collection methods that lead to violations of SCR model assumptions. We conducted a simulation study to evaluate the robustness of SCR methods to spatially heterogeneous density (i.e., configuration of individuals into groups of variable sizes and composition), individual heterogeneity in space‐use patterns, and adaptive sampling (i.e., variation in detectability across space that correlates with density). We evaluated each violation separately and in combination. We parameterized our simulations based on published information and preliminary analyses of NGS data sets of 3 ungulate species: chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), red deer (Cervus elaphus), and wild boar (Sus scrofa). While SCR estimates were robust to grouping and adaptive sampling, abundance estimates could be negatively biased (up to 10% in our simulations) in the presence of unaccounted individual heterogeneity in space use. The degree to which abundance estimates were underestimated depended mostly on the amount of variation in space use and detectability among age classes. This bias was also accompanied by a reduction in precision and coverage probability of the SCR estimators. We discuss the implications of these findings, possible approaches to identify problematic violations in available data sets (goodness‐of‐fit tests), and potential further developments of SCR models to ensure reliable abundance estimates for ungulate populations from NGS data. Covariance structure patterning of the phenotype can provide important insights into the evolution of forms. In this paper, we characterize the sex-specific phenotypic structure of cranial morphology in the four subspecies of chamois Rupicapra rupicapra (balcanica, carpatica, tatrica and rupicapra). We investigate variation in 18 craniometric characters of 360 adults chamois. Compared to the other subspecies, tatrica showed a highly integrated cranium. The cranium of carpatica and balcanica evolved in a more modular fashion, with most conspicuous nasal and oral modules. Females showed stronger correlations among cranial traits than males, suggesting higher potential for adaptations to new environmental conditions in the latter, matching sex-specific behavioral features. Subspecies rupicapra and tatrica showed contrasting levels of overall integration, followed by low levels of modularity, with sexual differences only in rupicapra. Our results suggest that, patterns and magnitudes of correlations among skeletal elements of the skull can evolve within a species through habitat and sexual selection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the situation of the population of chamois Rupicapra rupicapra in the canton of Jura (Switzerland) in order to highlight a potential gap between the management of the species and its natural dynamics. In addition, the situation of the species in the canton of Jura is compared to its national situation. The chamois number in the canton of Jura is far from the carrying capacity of the habitat, and the current management of the species is about to induce a decrease in the population, as evidenced by annual removal rates exceeding annual growth rates. Hunting management contributes thus to the gap from the natural equilibrium. Action should be taken as soon as possible to reverse this trend.

Abstract Depending on the habitats they live in, temperate ungulates have adapted to different degrees to seasonally changing forage and weather conditions, and to specific escape strategies from predators. Alpine chamois, a mountain ungulate, and red deer, originally adapted to open plains, would therefore be expected to differ in their physiological responses to potential stressors. Based on 742 chamois and 1557 red deer fecal samples collected year‐round every 2 weeks for 4 years at the same locations within a strictly protected area in the Swiss Alps, we analyzed glucocorticoid metabolite (FGM) concentrations for both species. Results from linear mixed effects models revealed no physiological stress response to changing visitor numbers, but instead to drought conditions for both species during summer. In winter, FGM concentrations increased with increasing snow height in both species, but this response was modulated by temperature in red deer. Chamois showed a stronger stress response to increasing snow height during November and December than between January and March, while FGM concentrations increased with decreasing temperature throughout winter. An increase in FGM concentrations with decreasing forage digestibility during winter was found only for red deer. The results are thus partly in contradiction to expectations based on feeding type and adaptations to different habitats between the two species. The lack of a response to forage digestibility in chamois may reflect either better adaptation to difficult feeding conditions in subalpine forests, or, by contrast, strong constraints imposed by forage quality. The similar responses of both species to weather conditions in winter suggest that climatic factors at the elevations examined here are sufficiently harsh to be limiting to temperate ungulates regardless of their specific adaptations to this environment.

A total of 109 fecal samples were collected from May to September, 2020 in the area of Rila National Park, Bulgaria. The samples were processed by flotation technique using saturated sodium chloride (sp. gr. 1.20), routine sedimentation method, Baermann's method and larval cultivation. In a total of 59 samples (54.12%) representatives of the family Protostrongylidae were found. The larvae found belong to four genera. The predominant infestations were with Muellerius spp. presented in 35.78% of the studied samples followed by Cystocaulus spp. - in 34.86%, respectively. The genus Protostrongylus was present in 7.34% of the samples, and Neostrongylus - 3.67%. Research on protostrongylid infestation of the Balkan chamois in the area of Rila National Park was carried out for the first time in Bulgaria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Uptake and use of energy are of key importance for animals living in temperate environments that undergo strong seasonal changes in forage quality and quantity. In ungulates, energy intake strongly affects body mass gain, an important component of individual fitness. Energy allocation among life‐history traits can be affected by internal and external factors. Here, we investigate large‐scale variation in body growth patterns of Alpine chamois Rupicapra rupicapra rupicapra, in relation to sex, age, temperature, and habitat variations across 31 (sub)populations in the Central European Alps. Taking advantage of an exceptionally large dataset (n = 178,175) of chamois hunted over 27 consecutive years between 1993 and 2019 in mountain ranges with different proportions of forest cover, we found that (i) patterns of body mass growth differ between mountain ranges, with lower body mass but faster mass growth with increasing proportion of forest cover and that (ii) the effect of spring and summer temperatures on changes in body growth patterns are larger in mountain ranges with lower forest cover compared to mountain ranges with higher forest cover. Our results show that patterns of body mass growth within a species are more plastic than expected and depend on environmental and climatic conditions. The recent decline in body mass observed in Alpine chamois populations may have greater impacts on populations living above the treeline than in forests, which may buffer against the effects of increasing temperatures on life‐history traits. Sympatric species with similar niches compete for common resources, often resulting in spatio-temporal avoidance. To date, little is known about the spatio-temporal interactions of ungulates in forested habitats. Using camera traps, we investigated the spatio-temporal responses of alpine chamois to the presence of red deer in the mountain forests of northern Croatia during the four seasons of 2018/2019. We hypothesized that chamois activity patterns should be affected by the presence of red deer, leading to either temporal or spatial segregation between the species. Our results showed that chamois tended to be more active during the day when red deer were absent, and showed contrasting patterns of activity across seasons, from bimodal to multimodal. However, temporal overlap coefficients between chamois and red deer were moderate throughout the study period, ranging from 0.57 in summer to 0.68 in autumn. Conversely, we found inconsistent/random occupancy patterns of chamois and red deer at different camera trap locations in different seasons. Our results are among the few available data on the interaction of these two species in forested areas and suggest weak effects of red deer on the spatio-temporal behaviour of Alpine chamois. Wild and domestic animals can be usefully employed as sentinels for the surveillance of diseases with an impact on public health. In the case of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), the detection of antibodies in animals can be more effective than screening ticks for detecting TBEV foci, due to the patchy distribution of the virus. In the Piedmont region, northwestern Italy, TBEV is considered absent, but an increase in tick densities, of Ixodes ricinus in particular, has been observed, and TBEV is spreading in bordering countries, e.g., Switzerland. Therefore, we collected sera from wild ungulates during the hunting season (October–December) from 2017 to 2019 in the Susa Valley, Italian western Alps, and screened them for TBEV antibodies by a commercial competitive ELISA test. We collected 267 serum samples by endocranial venous sinuses puncture from red deer, roe deer and northern chamois carcasses. The animals were hunted in 13 different municipalities, at altitudes ranging between 750 and 2800 m a.s.l. The serological survey for TBEV yielded negative results. Borderline results for five serum samples were further confirmed as negative for TBEV by a plaque reduction neutralisation test. To date, our results indicate that TBEV is not circulating in western Piedmont. However, monitoring of TBEV should continue since TBEV and its vector are spreading in Europe. The wide-range distribution of wild ungulates and their role as feeding hosts, make them useful indicators of the health threats posed by Ixodid ticks.

Climate change is known to affect key life‐history traits, such as body mass, reproduction, and survival in many species. Animal populations inhabiting mountain habitats are adapted to extreme seasonal environmental conditions but are also expected to be especially vulnerable to climate change. Studies on mountain ungulates typically focus on populations or sections of populations living above the tree line, whereas populations inhabiting forested habitats are largely understudied. Here, we investigate whether forested areas can mitigate the impact of climatic change on life‐history traits by evaluating the interactive effects of temperature and habitat characteristics on body mass variation in the Alpine chamois Rupicapra rupicapra rupicapra. We examined data of 20,573 yearling chamois collected from 1993 to 2019 in 28 mountain ranges in the Austrian Eastern Alps, characterized by different proportion of forest cover. Our results show that the temporal decline of chamois body mass is less pronounced in areas with greater proportion of forest cover. For chamois living in forest habitats only, no significant temporal change in body mass was detected. Variation in body mass was affected by the interaction between density and snow cover, as well as by the interaction between spring temperatures and forest cover, supporting the role of forests as thermal buffer against the effects of increasing temperatures on life‐history traits in a mountain ungulate. In turn, this study suggests a buffering effect of forests against climate change impacts. Assessments of the consequences of climate change on the life‐history traits and population dynamics of mountain‐dwelling species should thus consider the plasticity of the species with respect to the use and availability of different habitat types. Global climate change can affect animal ecology in numerous ways, but researchers usually emphasize undesirable consequences. Temperature increases, for instance, can induce direct physiological costs and indirect effects via mismatches in resource needs and availability. Species living in mountainous regions, however, could experience beneficial effects because winters might become less severe. We examined the potentially opposing effects of climate change during spring, summer, and winter on recruitment in Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). We examined initial recruitment (i.e., the ratio of kids to adult females) and net recruitment (i.e., the ratio of yearlings to adult females) of Alpine chamois through the use of linear mixed effects models and data from block count censuses performed across a 1,500‐km2 study area in the Italian Alps during summer from 2001 to 2015. Initial recruitment was relatively resistant to the effects of climate change, declining slightly over the study period. We suggest that the effects of increased forage availability and lower snow cover in winter may benefit the reproductive output of adult females, compensating for any negative effects of trophic mismatch and higher temperatures during summer. By contrast, net recruitment strongly declined throughout the study period, consistent with the slight decline of initial recruitment and the negative effects of increasing summer temperatures on the survival of kids during their first winter. These negative effects seemed to outweigh positive effects of climate change, even in a species strongly challenged by winter conditions. These findings provide important information for hunted populations; setting more appropriate hunting bags for yearling chamois should be considered. The ecological plasticity of the chamois, which also inhabits low altitudes, may allow a possible evolutionary escape for the species. © 2020 The Wildlife Society. Knowledge of population trends is of key importance for sustainable management of wildlife and finding reliable and cost–effective monitoring methods is therefore of great interest. In two populations of Alpine chamois Rupicapra rupicapra, we collected data on mortality from 12 424 individuals hunted or found dead and population size data based on ground counts over a period of 28 years. Our study had three aims: 1) we investigated if changes in population size obtained with a simple deterministic population reconstruction (DPR) approach using hunting and natural mortality covary with population size estimates obtained from ground count data. 2) We investigated if the performance of DPR is affected by the removal of natural mortality data. 3) We assessed how many years of mortality data are needed to obtain consistent population trends using DPR. Our results suggested that 1) population abundance from mortality data using DPR significantly and positively correlated with population abundance obtained with ground counts. 2) DPR without natural mortality data performed similarly as compared to DPR using full data (hunting and natural mortality). 3) Consistent estimates of population trends can be obtained with ≥10 years of mortality data, however, this time span was influenced by the mean age at death, which in turn was affected by the local hunting regime. Our results suggest that DPR and ground counts perform similarly for the estimation of temporal trends in Alpine chamois abundance. The consistence of ground counts and DPR supports the use of these methods as reliable tools for tracking abundance of chamois populations over time. However, the reliability of abundance estimates using DPR may vary between populations and the influence of different hunting regimes must be considered for the correct interpretation of results. The capital and income breeding concept links energy resources used during reproduction to the timing of their acquisition. During reproduction, capital breeders rely on resources gained previously and accumulated for reproductive investment. By contrast, income breeders use mainly resources collected during the period of reproductive activity. Most commonly, this concept is applied to females; relatively few studies have considered males. Moreover, there has been little attention to the link between the capital-income divide and other aspects of mating strategy. We studied adult males of three wild ungulates with different levels of polygyny. A large dataset (4,264 red deer, 53,619 roe deer, and 13,537 Alpine chamois, respectively) was obtained during 2007–2017 in the whole territory of Slovenia and in the Trento province, Italy. During the rut, body mass loss of males in highly polygynous species was more than twice that of weakly polygynous species: on average, red deer stags lost 19.5%; chamois bucks 16.0%; and roe deer bucks 7.5% of their body mass. This indicates potential for a hitherto unrecognized link between the degree of intrasexual competition and the degree of capital mating. The variability in body mass at the end of the rut was clearly reduced in both highly polygynous species (from 15.1 to 9.4% in red deer, and from 12.5 to 10.5% in chamois), but did not change in roe deer. Finally, roe deer bucks had recovered body mass to that of the pre-rut period by just 2 months after the rut, while red deer stags did not manage to compensate the loss of weight until the end of the year. We suggest that, at least in ungulates, there is a link between the degree of polygyny and that of capital breeding. Males of capital and income breeders underwent body mass changes resulting from different reproductive investment during the rut. Capital breeders lost considerably more weight, and invested a variable amount of energy among individuals or among years, possibly to cope with different environmental or body conditions. In so doing, they ended the rut with poorer but more even condition among individuals.

Understanding components of interspecific competition has long been a major goal in ecological studies. Classical models of competition typically consider equal responses of all individuals to the density of competitors, however responses may differ both among individuals from the same population, and between populations.Based on individual long‐term monitoring of two chamois populations in sympatry with red deer, we built a multi‐event capture‐recapture model to assess how vital rates of the smaller chamois are affected by competition from the larger red deer.In both populations, mortality and breeding probabilities of female chamois depend on age and in most cases, breeding status the preceding year. Successful breeders always performed better the next year, indicating that some females are of high quality. In one population where there was high spatial overlap between the two species, the survival of old female chamois that were successful breeders the preceding year (high‐quality) was negatively related to an index of red deer population size suggesting that they tend to skip reproduction instead of jeopardizing their own survival when the number of competitors increases. The breeding probability of young breeders (ages 2 and 3) was similarly affected by red deer population size. In contrast, in the second site with low spatial overlap between the two species, the vital rates of female chamois were not related to red deer population size.We provide evidence for population‐specific responses to interspecific competition and more generally, for context‐, age‐ and state‐dependent effects of interspecific competition.Our results also suggest that the classical assumption of equal responses of all individuals to interspecific competition should be relaxed, and emphasize the need to move towards more mechanistic approaches to better understand how natural populations respond to changes in their environment. Developmental stability of an individual is often evaluated by means of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in bilaterally paired morphological characters. Even though FA has been widely investigated in ungulates, its connection with the condition of individuals and their environment is still debated. In this study we investigated factors contributing to FA in horn length in the sexually monomorphic Alpine chamois. We measured right and left horn length of 1682 Alpine chamois (Nfemales = 734; Nmales = 948) shot during 2 consecutive hunting seasons (2015 and 2016) in 7 neighbouring districts in Central-Eastern Alps (Italy). We found no consistent left or right bias. Within our study population, FA values were normally distributed around a mean value that was not significantly different from zero (Skewness = − 0.107, SE = 0.06; Kurtosis = − 0.055, SE = 0.119). We also found that absolute FA in horn length was affected by environmental and climatic conditions experienced by the individuals during their first year and half of life. Statistically significant differences between right and left horn length were found with higher local population density and lower forage quality (i.e., siliceous substrate). Moreover, snow cover duration during the individuals' first winter increased horn length asymmetry. No individual characteristics played a role in promoting horn length asymmetry. The associations between exposure to stressors and deviations from bilateral symmetry suggest that absolute FA can be used to identify populations whose individuals experienced stressful conditions early in life. We found in this relatively monomorphic species that both male and female horns were equally affected by climate, substrate, and local population density, thus showing that large male secondary sexual characters, such as the antlers of deer stags, are not the only traits which can be influenced by a negative environment and exhibit increasing FA. How large herbivores track resource quantity and quality through time has formed the core of an abundance of literature on migratory populations in recent decades. Yet, relating foraging processes and habitat selection patterns in resident populations, where spatial heterogeneity of food resources is fine‐grained and/or where the portion of edible plants (i.e. the foodscape) is low, is challenging. We addressed this issue in a mountain population of chamois Rupicapra rupicapra, an intermediate feeder, whose individuals do not migrate. We relied on a rare combination of data on habitat use of 50 GPS‐collared females and data on the quantity (biomass) and quality (phenology) of edible resources in their landscape, derived from field sampling of vegetation, remote sensing and diet (DNA barcoding). The foodscape of the chamois was composed of a low proportion of the available biomass (<18%), including relatively high‐quality plants, with low spatial covariation between plant phenology and biomass. Chamois avoided areas with a low edible biomass (where the intake rate may be too low) and focused on areas with plants at approximately the flowering stage, whatever the average plant phenological stage available. Due to this constant preference for flowering plants, home range selection ratios therefore shifted during the summer from a selection of more advanced plants in June to their avoidance in August. When the phenology scores of all plants available, rather than edible plants only, were considered, areas with relatively more advanced plants were selected all summer long. This exemplifies that, when traits from edible plants are different from those of all plants available, it is crucial to consider the actual foodscape to decipher forage and habitat selection processes. During the early 1900s, Northern chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) populations in the northern Dinaric Mountains were extirpated. During the 1960s and 1970s there were several reintroductions of individuals from two Northern chamois subspecies (Alpine chamois, R. r. rupicapra and Balkan chamois, R. r. balcanica) from neighbouring areas in the attempt to re-establish the population. Accurate taxonomic classification, at subspecies level, of the autochthonous extirpated population was not known. To clarify which subspecies was present before reintroduction, we genotyped four male chamois skulls originating from Velebit Mountain, collected around 25 years before the population local extinction. DNA was successfully extracted from middle layer and outer sheath of horns. Assignment based on microsatellite loci, using both Bayesian clustering in STRUCTURE (with q values between 0.55 and 0.73) and DAPC (with individual membership probabilities of 0.99 and 1.00) indicated higher assessed likelihood for the Alpine subspecies. Most habitats are distributed heterogeneously in space, forcing animals to move according to both habitat characteristics and their needs for energy and safety. Animal space use should therefore vary according to habitat characteristics, a process known as the "functional response" in habitat selection. This response has often been tested vis-à-vis the proportion of a habitat category within areas available to individuals. Measuring sought-after resources in landscape where they are continuously distributed is a challenge and we posit here that both the mean availability of a resource and its spatial variation should be measured. Accordingly, we tested for a functional response in habitat selection according to these two descriptors of the resource available for a mountain herbivore. We hypothesized that selection should decrease with mean value of resources available and increase with its spatial variation. Based on GPS data from 50 chamois females and data on the actual foodscape (i.e. distribution of edible-only biomass in the landscape), we estimated individual selection ratio (during summer months) for biomass at the home range level, comparing edible biomass in individual home ranges and the mean and standard deviation of edible biomass in their available range. Chamois being a group-living species, available accessible ranges were shared by several individuals that formed socio-spatial groups (clusters) in the population. As expected, selection ratios increased with the standard deviation of edible resources in each cluster, but unlike our prediction, was unrelated to its mean. Selection of areas richer in resources hence did not fade away when more resources were available on average, a result that may be explained by the need for this capital breeder species to accumulate fat-reserve at a high rate during summer months. Abstract Different species exhibit individual daily and annual activity patterns in response to a range of intrinsic and extrinsic drivers. Historically, research on the activity budgets of large wild animals focused on daylight hours due to the logistical difficulties of observing animals at night. Thanks to recent advances in animal-attached technology, however, this research can be extended to a 24-h timeframe. Taking advantage of GPS collars with activity sensors collecting a large amount of data per hour, we separately studied diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns of Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), in order to identify the factors affecting them and the correlation between them. From March 2010 to November 2013, we collected data on 17 chamois in the Swiss National Park, a strict Alpine nature reserve where human management was forbidden and human harassment quite rare. Environmental factors were found to significantly influence both diurnal and nocturnal activity rhythms, with temperature and seasonality playing a pivotal role. Surprisingly, we detected a stable peak of activity in the first part of the night, which varied only slightly over the year. In summer, the nocturnal activity of males was inversely correlated to diurnal activity, arguably to compensate for scarce diurnal food intake. Conversely, winter nocturnal activity was positively related to the diurnal activity and served as a cumulative opportunity for energy intake. Chamois showed a weak lunarphilia, with a slight increase in activity levels during moonlit nights, especially during the mating season. Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) code for cell surface proteins essential for adaptive immunity. They show the most outstanding genetic diversity in vertebrates, which has been connected with various fitness traits and thus with the long-term persistence of populations. In this study, polymorphism of the MHC class II DRB locus was investigated in chamois with Single-Strand Conformation Polymorphism (SSCP)/Sanger genotyping and Ion Torrent S5 next-generation sequencing (NGS). From eight identified DRB variants in 28 individuals, five had already been described, and three were new, undescribed alleles. With conventional SSCP/Sanger sequencing, we were able to detect seven alleles, all of which were also detected with NGS. We found inconsistencies in the individual genotypes between the two methods, which were mainly caused by allelic dropout in the SSCP/Sanger method. Six out of 28 individuals were falsely classified as homozygous with SSCP/Sanger analysis. Overall, 25% of the individuals were identified as genotyping discrepancies between the two methods. Our results show that NGS technologies are better performing in sequencing highly variable regions such as the MHC, and they also have a higher detection capacity, thus allowing a more accurate description of the genetic composition, which is crucial for evolutionary and population genetic studies.

Chamois dispersion and population in Serbia today is relatively small in contrast to many suitable habitats across the country. One of the last stable populations can be found in the Tara Mountain. It is also one of the last places in Serbia where hunting tourists can hunt chamois. Considering that, it can be said that Tara chamois population can represent an important attracting factor for hunting tourists, both domestic and foreign. This paper analyses the significance of this population on the increase of variety of hunting tourism offer on Tara Mountain, but also in Serbia. Also, the values of trophies realized through hunting tourism are analyzed in terms of keeping track of the demand, but also as a way to monitor the population so it remains preserved in the future.

Foraging efficiency strongly affects individual fitness and is influenced by diverse factors such as food quality and quantity, as well as intra- and inter-specific interactions. We investigated whether Alpine chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra (Linnaeus, 1758)) in a protected area in the Swiss Alps adapted their foraging behaviour to forage availability and quality by modeling the bite and step rates of individuals on vegetation nitrogen content, relative plant cover, sex, daytime, air temperature, and slope. Vegetation characteristics were derived using remote sensing data from airborne imaging spectroscopy data sets and feeding locations determined using a theodolite. Chamois increased their bite rates with decreasing forage nitrogen content, decreasing slope, and increasing temperature. Step rates were higher at high temperatures and decreased with increasing relative plant cover. Males showed higher bite rates and lower step rates than females. Daytime had no influence on either bite or step rates. An increase in bite rate may represent a plastic adaptation of foraging behaviour to compensate for lower nutritional quality of the available vegetation. Our results show variability in foraging behaviour according to both vegetation characteristics and physical environment and emphasize the use of remote sensing data to investigate relationships between habitat and subtle behavioural adaptations in ungulates. The Dinaric region is the natural habitat of the Alpine chamois Rupicapra rupicapra rupicapra and Balkan chamois Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica. Recently confirmed, these two subspecies hybridize in the contact zone on Mts Velebit, coastal Croatia. Patterns of horn development in chamois can differ within populations and subspecies, and are mostly influenced by genetic structure, sex and resource availability. These factors control the direct ability of energy allocation to secondary sexual traits with diverse outcomes. This is the first study to investigate the horn growth patterns of Alpine and Balkan chamois populations and their admixed progeny. We explored the differences in horn growth and compensatory patterns among populations as a function of genetic background, separately for females and males. A significantly different pattern of horn development was detected in the hybrid population showing higher rates of initial horn growth – until 2.5 years, and much lower compensation rates in the first 4.5 years of life in both sexes in comparison to other chamois populations. Interestingly, differences in growth patterns were more expressed among males. Higher initial horn growth and low compensation rates in the hybrid population can be explained by both non‐genetic and genetic factors, but may suggest an effect of heterosis, i.e. the occurrence of hybrid vigour. Therefore, this situation could reveal the extent to which life history patterns and evolutionary consequences can shape important traits of population outlook/vigour, such as horn size, in different chamois populations. Orf-virus (ORFV) is a parapoxvirus that infects small ruminants worldwide causing sporadic zoonotic infections, mainly transmitted by direct contact with sheep and goats. Following an ORFV case in a hunter of Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), who did not report previous contact to domestic animals, a serological survey in Western Austria was conducted to assess the seroprevalence of ORFV in this species. In addition, this study also tested blood/tissue samples of chamois from different areas of the adjacent province of Bolzano/Northern Italy for antibodies against ORFV using immunofluorescence and ELISA. The observed seropositivity rates in the chamois tested on the Austrian and Italian side of the Alps were 23.5% and 9.5%, respectively, with a combined 95% confidence interval ranging from 0.0678 to 0.238. Although the prevalence was significantly lower than the one observed in Austrian sheep flocks, this study provided the first evidence that parapoxviruses have spilled over into chamois populations to a significant degree in the Tyrol regions of Austria and Italy.

A revision was performed of the material of tapeworm Moniezia trigonophora Stiles et Hassall, 1893, the finding of which in the territory of the Czech Republic in the host Rupicapra rupicapra (L., 1758) was mentioned by Lamka et al. (2007a, b).After the revision of the material the species M. trigonophora is not a parasite of R. rupicapra in the Czech Republic but tapeworms from M. benedeni species complex parasitize this host in Lusatian Mountains (compare in Kotrlý and Kotrlá-Erhardová, 1970).

Con frecuencia cuando en los yacimientos arqueológicos aparece fauna asociada a restos líticos, ésta suele interpretarse como la consecuencia de una actividad antrópica. Sin embargo dependiendo de la cronología de dichas asociaciones, los juicios de valor vertidos sobre ellas difieren, de manera que ante contextos del Pleistoceno Inferior o Medio se discute el grado de intervención que puedan tener cediendo un papel predominante a otros agentes como los carnívoros, restringiendo al ser humano a un segundo plano como carroñero. Por el contrario en contextos del Pleistoceno Superior y concretamente para el Paleolitico Superior es frecuente la asunción de vincular las acumulaciones osteologicas a la acción humana con independencia de que se realicen estudios tafonómicos. Ante esto la tafonomía se ha destacado como una ciencia imprescindible para la correcta comprensión de las concentraciones óseas, y por ello los yacimientos deben ser analizados desde este punto de vista. En este trabajo se plantea una revisión tafonómica de los macrovertebrados de la Cueva de Amalda, y la evidencias que ofrecen difieren notablemente de las interpretaciones iniciales de ALTUNA (1990), así como de las asunciones que interpretan este yacimiento como un cazadero de recursos de montaña.

Activity rhythms play an important role in the ecological relations of a species and form part of its evolutionary adaptation. Such rhythms are strongly synchronised with the annual cyclic changes by environmental stimuli, the so-called zeitgebers. Animals' reliance on environmental stimuli is highly species-specific and allows behavioural adjustments to be made in preparation for the conditions expected in each season. We investigated daily and annual activity rhythms of Alpine chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra) by analysing high-resolution data of animals monitored with GPS collars. This first detailed field study of chamois activity showed that this species exhibited clear daily and annual activity rhythms entrained to the light-dark cycle. Chamois were more active during spring-summer and less active during winter, likely in response to the variation in the availability of food resources: both sexes appeared to maximise energy intake during the season offering the highest amount of food resources to compensate for poor food supply during winter. Daily activity was influenced by the climatic factors considered. We showed a negative correlation between daily activity and adverse climatic conditions (i.e. precipitation and, during winter, snow depth). As activity was strongly influenced by the interplay between temperature and wind throughout the year and by radiation and wind in winter, we conjectured that it was critically dependent upon animals' thermal balance. In conclusion, our study highlighted that chamois is well adapted to the Alpine environment and seasonality but also raised questions about its ability to adapt to future climate change. Significance statement: In this study, we investigated the effects of ecological factors on Alpine chamois activity. Thanks to radio collars with accelerometers, we obtained highly detailed information on activity levels of wild animals. We found that chamois were more active during spring-summer (i.e. the seasons with the highest quality and quantity of food) and less active during winter. Our results showed that chamois activity was strongly influenced by such climatic factors as temperature, precipitation and wind speed. In winter time, chamois activity increased during the days with high solar radiation and decreased with high snow depth. Given their wide distribution in the Alps, chamois can be considered as a sentinel species of Alpine habitats. ABSTRACT The Dinaric Mountains in Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina provide a unique system to address the effects of past hunting on the genetic structure of northern chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra) and possible hybridization in the contact zone in the Velebit Mountains. The northern Dinaric Mountains should be occupied by alpine chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra rupicapra), whereas the central and southern areas are inhabited by the Balkan chamois ( R. rupicapra balcanica). This is the first study to characterize the genetic variation in chamois populations in the area. We used microsatellite and mitochondrial markers to analyze the genetic variation and structure of chamois populations from different geographical areas with different histories. Specifically, we explored the influence of recent human translocations and geographical isolation on the genetic architecture of chamois populations in the assumed contact zone. We successfully genotyped 74 individual samples and the number of alleles/locus ranged from 6 to 20 with a mean of 9.20. Allelic richness across populations ranged from 2.94 in the Prenj Mountains, Bosnia and Herzegovina to 3.56 in the Biokovo Mountains, Croatia. A similar pattern was also observed for heterozygosity, ranging between 0.729 and 0.572, and expected heterozygosity, ranging between 0.762 and 0.644 in the Prenj and Biokovo mountains, respectively. The global genetic distance (FST) for 7 population samples was 0.103 ± 0.047 (range = 0.0156-0.185). The STRUCTURE tree clusters separated samples from the northern Dinaric Mountains from those of the southern Dinaric Mountains into 2 clusters according to geographic location. The results obtained using a Bayesian clustering methodology was similar. By using mtDNA variation in chamois from Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the existence of alpine chamois haplotypes in northern areas and Balkan chamois haplotypes in southern areas was confirmed. These results confirm the impact of recent human management (i.e., translocation) into the Velebit Mountains, which established a new contact (hybridization) zone between the subspecies. Therefore, future translocations must be planned carefully to avoid compromising genetic integrity and posing a serious risk to native species, as in this case. © 2016 The Wildlife Society. In long-lived mammals, costs of reproduction may vary with age. The terminal investment hypothesis predicts greater reproductive effort as females approach the end of their life expectancy. We monitored 97 individually marked female Alpine chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra (L., 1758)) between 2007 and 2013 to determine how age-specific reproduction affected body mass and subsequent reproductive success. We captured and weighed females between April and August and monitored reproductive success from April to October through mother-kid associations. Reproductive success was strongly age-dependent and peaked at 70% for prime-aged females (4-7 years). Reproductive senescence began at 8 years, earlier than reported by other studies of ungulates. There was no clear evidence of reproductive costs in any age class. Reproductive success was very heterogeneous for old females, suggesting variability in the onset of senescence. Old females were less likely to reproduce in poor years despite being heavier than prime-aged females, suggesting reproductive restraint in late life rather than terminal investment. Female mass remained stable from May to August with no effect of lactation. Our results suggest that chamois reproductive strategy becomes increasingly conservative with age, resulting in no detectable costs of reproduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reduction of predation risk is widely considered a major factor affecting the nocturnal activity of mammals. Furthermore, on precipitous mountain terrain, moving in very poor light conditions should be avoided by animals with no special eyesight adaptation to darkness. The Northern chamois Rupicapra rupicapra has been for long considered as a diurnal species, with occasional nocturnal movements. For the first time, we have quantified the nocturnal activity of 21 radiotagged female chamois from the Italian Eastern Alps (Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Natural Park), continuously monitored for two years from sunset to sunrise, with 24 h tracking sessions carried out for six months. Large predators were not present in the study site. Despite their mainly diurnal activity pattern, peaks of nocturnal movements were detected throughout the year. The least proportion of active night fixes occurred in January and in July, while the most were in April and in October. The greater nocturnal activity in the warm months compared to cold periods, was probably due to frozen snow cover reducing nocturnal movements. Movements were mainly concentrated in bright moonlight nights, possibly because of the absence of large predators, but more likely because of increased visibility. Distributions of 12 mammal species (Castor fiber, Spermophilus citellus, Muscardinus avellanarius, Glis glis, Lutra lutra, Mustela erminea, Mustela putorius, Canis lupus, Ursus arctos, Lynx lynx, Alces alces, Rupicapra rupicapra) in Silesia during the years 2004-2008 are presented on maps. A rough estimation of their numbers is also provided for seven regions in Silesia (Katowice [Upper Silesia], Opole, Wrocław, Wa*#322;brzych, Legnica, Jelenia Góra and Zielona Góra regions). The study is based on inquiries addressed to all (N=871) forest districts in Silesia. Data were obtained from 730 (83.8%) forest districts. Population dynamics of those species were also traced as far back as literature records allowed. In many species, population dynamics are shaped by age-structured demographic parameters, such as survival, which can cause age-specific sensitivity to environmental conditions. Accordingly, we can expect populations with different age-specific survival to be differently affected by environmental variation. However, this hypothesis is rarely tested at the intra-specific level. Using capture-mark-recapture models, we quantified age-specific survival and the extent of annual variations in survival of females of alpine chamois in two sites. In one population, survival was very high (>0.94; Bauges, France) until the onset of senescence at approximately 7 years old, whereas the two other populations (Swiss National Park, SNP) had a later onset (12 years old) and a lower rate of senescence. Senescence patterns are therefore not fixed within species. Annual variation in survival was higher in the Bauges (SD = 0.26) compared to the SNP populations (SD = 0.20). Also, in each population, the age classes with the lowest survival also experienced the largest temporal variation, in accordance with inter-specific comparisons showing a greater impact of environmental variation on these age classes. The large difference between the populations in age-specific survival and variation suggests that environmental variation and climate change will affect these populations differently. In large mammalian herbivores, an increase in herd size not only reduces predation risk but also energy intake. As a consequence, the size of the groups made up by herbivores is often assumed to be the outcome of a trade-off depending on local predation risk and food availability. We studied Alpine chamois ( Rupicapra rupicapra) group size in a 3660 ha wide area (central-Eastern Alps, Italy) where mouflon ( Ovis gmelinii) were also present. We walked seven hiking trails (spanning a total of 33.9 km) in a high-elevation environment every 15 days from May to October in 2007-2009, and located all the groups of free-ranging ungulates within our study site. We analyzed the size variation in female groups with kids of Alpine chamois in relation to (i) forage availability (as estimated using the normalized difference vegetation index); (ii) distance from safe areas; (iii) presence of potential competitor species (i.e., mouflon); and (iv) environmental variables (elevation, slope exposure). We found that forage availability was one of the most important drivers of group size patterns. Larger groups were found in meadows with higher productivity, whereas smaller groups were located in lower quality meadows in sheltered areas, indicating how the female group size may be the outcome of both resource availability and predation risk avoidance. Interestingly, proximity of a mouflon group was able to modify the size of Alpine chamois female groups, especially if the nearest mouflon group was concurrently close and inclusive of a higher percentage of rams. [fr] Chez les chamois, nous avons étudié l’influence des différentes perturbations de diverses fréquences sur le comportement et nous nous sommes demandés si les résultats obtenus pouvaient orienter la gestion des populations. En effet, aussi bien le type que la fréquence de la perturbation ont influencé de manière significative le comportement. De plus, la tolérance aux perturbations varie avec la saison, l'heure du jour, le sexe et la taille du groupe. Les perturbations produites par des engins aériens ont provoqué une réponse beaucoup plus forte que celles provenant du terrain; la réponse étant augmentée avec la vitesse ou le degré du bruit de la source de perturbation. Là où les perturbations étaient fréquentes, la réponse se voyait réduite par rapport a des territoires éloignés, cela nous indiquant une habituation certaine. Los resultados indican claramente que el tipo y frecuencia de las molestias tienen una fuerte influencia en la respuesta y que la tolerancia a las molestias varía con la estación, hora del día, sexo y tamaño grupal. Las molestias producidas por objetos volantes provocan una respuesta mucho mayor que las originadas desde tierra, además la intensidad de la respuesta se incrementa con la velocidad o el nivel de ruido de la molestia. Donde las molestias son frecuentes la respuesta es menor que en áreas remotas, lo que indica un efecto de habituación. Mientras la distancia de reacción y la de huida varía con la intensidad de la molestia, la longitud del recorrido de huida no se vio influida por el tipo o frecuencia de las molestias. Las molestias afectaron también al uso del hábitat: los hábitats seleccionados tras la molestia fueron principalmente rocas y bosques indicando un cambio en el uso hacia hábitats inaccesibles o con abundante cobertura.
