This bachelor thesis examines Chinese development assistance in Central Asia, specifically in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Over the past few years China has become the largest donor in the region, which contributes to China's growing influence. This thesis sets out to explain political motives of Chinese development assistance and analyse Chinese projects in the countries. In this thesis I explain the traditional concepts of development aid and the Chinese alternative, I also describe the development of foreign relations of the People's Republic of China with the countries of Central Asia, and Chinese activities and interests in the region. In my own analysis, I examine the allocation of Chinese development assistance by sector, and total amount of funding distributed according to traditional and Chinese definitions of development cooperation. The main result of this thesis is that the provision of Chinese development assistance in the region is determined primarily by China's own strategic and political interests, rather than altruistic interest in economic growth and improvement of living conditions in the countries of interest. Key words: development assistance, China, Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, political influence, Belt and Road Initiative

The diploma thesis focuses on the development cooperation and implementation of projects in local cultures using example of Ugandan community from the Lusanja village. The aim of this thesis is to describe the impact of development cooperation on the community and its expectations, to map the dialogue among the various actors of the project and to provide feedback to the Western non-profit organizations from the local culture. Based on field research conducted using ethnographic methods, the thesis brings an emic perspective of the local community to the Western idea of development cooperation. The emic perspective is mostly omitted from the development discourse, eventhough it could significantly affect the sustainability of implemented projects in developing countries. The thesis also covers the daily life of the Lusanja people. Key words: development cooperation, local community, NGOs, Uganda, sustainable development, ethnographic research

The main topic of this thesis is the use of development cooperation as an instrument of foreign policy of the People's Republic of China (China) and the European Union (EU) in Africa. The aim of this diploma thesis was to find out whether the development cooperation policy of China, respectively the EU with African countries, is motivated rather by pragmatic or normative interests. In order to answer this research question, a qualitative content analysis was applied, in which the documents of these two actors were examined. The main theoretical concept of this diploma thesis is the concept of normative power, which served as an indicator of normative interests. In the case of the EU, the hypothesis that the EU would primarily act as a normative power in development cooperation, i.e. that it would be interested in disseminating its norms in the international system, has not been confirmed. The results of the content analysis reveal that pragmatic interests prevail in the development cooperation between the EU and African countries. In the case of China's involvement in development cooperation, the results of the analysis reveal that the main motivations within this policy are mainly normative interests, i.e. the interests of disseminating its norms in the international politics.

The effectiveness of development cooperation is currently widely discussed. Development cooperation has come to be criticized, both in terms of its appropriateness and for failing to address some of the global challenges that affect poorer nations. Respecting the differences of developing countries, therefore, plays an important role. It is a question of whether developed countries are aware of cultural and other differences and are proceeding in their help concerning these differences. The problem that the thesis wants to draw attention to is the functionality of development cooperation, which can be influenced by various actors and their beliefs. The main goal is to try to explain, using the theory named Advocacy Coalition Framework, how the beliefs of actors can affect development cooperation. One of the other partial goals is to find out whether and how advocacy coalitions are formed in the field of development cooperation. The contribution of the work is mainly the critical application of the ACF theory in the field of development cooperation in the environment of the Republic of Kenya, as well as the application of the Q method in the research of the perspectives of selected actors. According to the author, the work can also have other benefits such as providing a new perspective on the issue of...

Ve třetím úseku se zaměřuji na již zmíněný projekt Adopce na dálku®, jenž propojuji s analýzou výsledků z terénního výzkumu., In my bachelor thesis I deal with the project Child sponsorship, which is implemented by Caritas of the Diocese of Hradec Králové. My aim is to describe the functioning of the project, to find out why the donors have chosen this kind of charity aid and to summarise how they evaluate its functioning. In the first part, I present the structure of the organization and the non-profit sector in general. In the next phase, I discuss "child sponsorship" as development cooperation projects and I try to outline the connection between development activity and work of anthropologists. In the third section, I focus on the aforementioned project Child sponsorship, which is linked to the analysis of the results from field research., Fakulta filozofická, Studentka krátce představila svou bakalářskou práci. The aim of this thesis is to provide a deeper understanding of exit strategies within the development studies and the development community. The exit of financial aid by donors from developing countries have large effects on the recipients. Modern donors are facing the challenge of how to effectively exit a partner country without affecting the sustainability of their intervention, their relationship with the partner and the economic and social impact on the beneficiaries. For this purpose, modern donors establish exit strategies to guide their processes. Czech Republic as a new modern donor is aiming to increase its effectivity of development cooperation. However, when exiting partner countries such as Serbia, it does not follow an exit strategy. This thesis tries to analyse how the process of exit of the Czech Republic can be used to argue for the need of exit strategies, and what lessons can be learned from past exits.

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of partnership in development cooperation. In particular, partnerships between development cooperation providers are nowadays being discussed very often, as this type of partnership is playing an increasingly important role in achieving global goals. However, the ambiguity of the concept remains a problem, which is reflected in the uncertainty of translating the theoretical engagements resulting from the partnership into practice. The bachelor thesis examines the issue of partnership between development co-providers at the theoretical level, and contains a case study to provide answers to questions about the importance and possible need to conclude international partnerships. The case study is based on two major development agencies: USAID (International Agency for International Development) and Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) whose Power Africa Partnership established a successful Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia project exploration. The Power Africa initiative is basically one of the largest public-private partnerships in the history of development cooperation.

Foreign policy of Czechoslovakia in 70's and 80's depended completely on the policy of the Soviet union and its promoted ideology. The Czechoslovak socialist republic preserved the narrowest relationship with the Soviet union and its sattelite states in Eastern Europe, while the relationship with the western countries oriented to co-operation with the United states, was very cold and was beeing restored very slowly and gradually. The developing countries, especially those heading to a socialist establishment, had a special position in Czechoslovak foreign policy. Especially these countries benefited from Czechoslovak aid such as financial, military or material support. Another way Czechoslovakia implemented its development aid was offering scholarships for university students. The purpose of this form of aid was to contribute to the progress of developing countries, most of whom gained independence recently. Simultaneously the policy pursued another aim - to spread the socialist ideology and the influlence of the Soviet union around the world. Hundreds of foreign students studied in Czechoslovak universities every year during 70's and 80's. Most of them came from so called developing countries. Foreign students came from various countries of the world, various cultures and therefore they perceived...

The bachelor thesis deals with development aid in general, presents its definition and analyzes in particular the development of various attitudes that were previously discussed. This theoretical background is an essential part of finding more effective approaches, as it can generally be said that the Western assistance to date has failed to do so. The work is thus further dealt with by other development cooperation alternatives that could be capable of 'the poorest' billion out of poverty. The second part then deals exclusively with the role of China in Africa, first attempts to map out the activities it deals with, and acquaintances with forms of cooperation that are different from those with other countries in the past. It represents the type of cooperation on which the most valuable investments of this bilateral aid are built, which are projects for the construction of transport and energy infrastructures in exchange for access to African natural resources, especially oil. In addition, the work focuses on the characteristics of the current socio-economic situation of Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo and evaluates the development of the most important economic and social indicators such as GDP and HDI. It finds that these variables generally record growth and improvement, which is not so significant in the social sphere, indicators that are more tangible about the quality of life of the people in these countries. In general, the work comes to the conclusion that China's presence in Africa is largely positive, as China, as a country with experience of transformation from a backward country into the world's second largest economy, has chosen a different approach to cooperation with the Third World, Exploiting their comparative advantage, which is the presence of mineral wealth and cheap labor, in exchange for what they are acutely needed - the development of transport and energy infrastructure.

The thesis deals with development cooperation in post-conflict reconstruction. The comparative case study analyzes the specific involvement of the international community in the post-war reconstruction of Rwanda and Burundi with emphasis on two main areas, political/constitutional, and socio-economic. Based on the findings of the analysis, possible measures are suggested to make development cooperation in post-conflict reconstruction more effective, especially in the case of Burundi. The results of the analysis show that the international community should in case of these two countries, among other things, mostly focus on securing political stability, supporting civil society, or building infrastructure, and thus help to achieve the goals of post-conflict reconstruction.

CHARLES UNIVERSITY IN PRAGUE FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Institute of Sociological Studies Department of Public and Social Policy Michaela Ditrych Lenc A Reflection of Capacity Development Concept in the Czech Development Cooperation Programme in Higher Education and Research - A Georgia Case Study Master's Thesis Prague 2017 Abstract The Master's thesis is concerned with a recently launched policy instrument called the programme placement of Czech students to developing countries whose aim is to enhance quality of higher education and research in Czech Republic's partner countries in the South. The programme, implemented in the framework of the Czech development policy, was introduced in 2012 as a complement modality to the government scholarship programme. The main aim of the thesis was to identify if the project implemented in Georgia within the programme placement had contributed to capacity development in higher education and research in that region. Based on the capacity development concept it was ascertained that the project had promoted development mainly of individual capacities and to a certain extent of organisational capacities as well. Even though the system level was taken into consideration during the implementation, significant system change has not been identified. Additionally, the project...

This study is a symmetrical ethnography of the Czech development project Kola pro Afriku (Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools), which involves the collection, repairs, modification and shipment of old Czech bicycles to The Gambia. Once there, they are distributed to partner schools and offered to communing pupils. In my research, I mainly focus on the pivotal technology of the project, bicycles, and their performances. Drawing on classic ethnographies of development and (most importantly) on studies based on the actor-network theory (ANT), I gradually explore the bike collection process, their modifications and repairs, their shipment to The Gambia and their local operations. When doing so, I focus on the social topology of the bicycles and its transformations in the timespace. In this regard, the bicycles gradually appear as junk (i.e. a dysfunctional relict of stabilized networks), as a fluid collectivity and as individually fluid. Thereby, this study shows that technology transfers may lead not only to changes in the set of relations, of which the given object consists, but in the very modes, in which those relations arise. It is precisely these topological transformations that significantly contribute to the functioning of the project Kola pro Afriku. Key words: development cooperation,...

The work looks at EU's development policy through the lens of one of integration theories, namely multi-level governance. The relationship between the EU and three countries from ACP group, Rwanda, Haiti and East Timor is being analysed. From current trends of multi-level governance the research is focusing on the process of strengthening of supranational level and on advancing regionalization, understood in terms of regional integration on one side and the transfer of powers to lower administrative units or local emancipation. The work is inspired by the idea of the author Martin Holland that integration theories are better observable on EU's development policy than on EU's integration itself. Using the comparison of official EU's declarations over development cooperation with ACP group and real agenda implemented in those countries, the work investigates EU's involvement during penetration of surveyed countries into transnational structures, into regional coalitions and the promotion of emancipation of lower administrative units in the country. The research aims to analyze bonds formed between the European Union and Rwanda, Haiti and East Timor, which, according to Martin Holland, the concept of multi-level governance should best describe.

Human rights are basic rights that belong to every person all over the world. However, many countries still don't respect them and they are being violated on daily basis. Many of the countries that have issues with human rights are developing countries. Human rights support has therefore become one of the goals of development cooperation. Since the 90's it has become apparent that support of human rights is a crucial prerequisite for sustainable and fair long-term development. Many participants are striving for a deeper integration of human rights into their development activities. Currently, the highest level of integration is an approach based on human rights. Sweden is leading the way in development cooperation and is actively fighting for human rights support in the field of international politics. This paper is going to asses and evaluate to what degree are human rights integrated into Sweden's development cooperation.

The aim of the thesis "Analysis of the Pontifical Missionary Societies' (PMS) Activities in the Czech Republic" is to determine to what extent the activities of Czech PMS are truly missionary. First, basic terms are defined: mission, charity, humanitarian aid, and development assistance (Chapter 1). What they all have in common is caring for others; charity and mission have religious motivation and are carried out by the Church, whereas humanitarian aid and development assistance are matters of a secular state (though in everyday use the terms are often confused). Charity, i. e. selfless help to those in need, does not have a religious goal, it is not an instrument of evangelization unlike mission, whose aim it is to proclaim the Gospel (Chapter 2). Mission lies at the heart of the PMS on a worldwide scale and for this purpose they were established: Society for the Propagation of the Faith 1822, Society of the Holy Childhood 1843, Society of St. Peter the Apostle 1889, and Missionary Union 1916 (Chapter 3). Since their renewal in the CR in 1993 the Societies have developed a wide range of membership forms and activities, and collection yields have grown tenfold (Chapter 4). What the money is spent on determines the basic character of the institution. Exact data of the National Office for 2011 and 2012 show...

This thesis deals with the assessment of the effectiveness of selected bilateral projects of Czech official development assistance. Main purpose is to assess how well were the projects prepared and what were their results and eventual impacts. On the basis of aid effectiveness literature and manuals and handbooks for project management some main recommended principles and components of the ideal project design were specified. These principles and components were confronted with the reality of selected Czech development projects, the way these projects were design and with results they brought. These information were gathered by undertaking an own survey among projects leaders and through analysis of existing evaluation reports. In general, the design of considered projects has not been found sufficiently coherent with the recommended principles. Projects' results have not been as good as was expected. Although many of the considered principles had already been well known a long time before the evaluated projects were implemented, it has to be noted that there were no common standards formally declared in the Czechia in the time when these projects were formulated and implemented. Key words: development cooperation, aid effectiveness, project cycle management, Czechia

This thesis concentrates on the examination of the effectiveness of development assistance and its comparison to the effectiveness of the integration of developing countries into foreign trade. The main aim of this study is to determine, whether the effectiveness of development assistance could be increased through closer interconnection with trade support. Consequently, the possibilities of the Czech Export Bank's participation in such arrangements are examined. The dependence of gross domestic product, gross national income per capita and life expectancy at birth on the amounts of development aid received and on the openness of development economies is measured by Pearson's coefficient of correlation and subsequently compared. All indicators were obtained from the databases of the OECD and the WB. The results showed a much more positive connection between openness and the factors examined than they did for the correlation between the amounts of the development aid received and the same indicators. The investigation in the Czech Export Bank revealed various opinions, it certified, however, that a closer connection between development assistance and the business sphere can be advisable. The support of the integration of developing economies into international trade was proven to be effective in a long run and the resources of development assistance should be used to establish the necessary technological and theoretical background to make it happen.
