Blue supergiants (BSGs) are important objects to study the intermediate phases of massive star evolution, helping to constrain evolutionary models. However, the lack of a holistic study of a statistically significant and unbiased sample of these objects makes several long-standing questions about their nature to remain unsolved. The present and other upcoming papers of the IACOB series are focused in studying - from a pure empirical point of view - a sample of 500 Galactic O9 - B9 stars with luminosity classes I and II (plus 250 late O- and early B-type stars with luminosity classes III, IV and V) and covering distances up to 4 kpc from the Sun. We compile an initial set of 11000 high-resolution spectra of 1600 Galactic late O- and B-type stars. We use a new novel spectroscopic strategy based on a simple fitting of the Hbeta line to select stars in a specific region of the spectroscopic HR diagram. We evaluate the completeness of our sample using the Alma Luminous Star catalog (ALS III) and Gaia-DR3 data. We show the benefits of the proposed strategy for identifying BSGs descending from stellar objects born as O-type stars, in the context of single star evolution. The resulting sample reaches a high level of completeness with respect to the ALS III catalog, gathering the 80% for all-sky targets brighter than Bmag < 9 located within 2 kpc. However, we identify the need for new observations in specific regions of the Southern hemisphere. In conclusion, we have explored a very fast and robust method to select BSGs, providing a valuable tool for large spectroscopic surveys like WEAVE-SCIP or 4MIDABLE-LR, and highlighting the risk of using spectral classifications from the literature. Upcoming works will make use of this large and homogeneous spectroscopic sample to study specific properties of these stars in detail. In them, we can find the values of the frequencies, amplitudes, phases, corresponding errors, and S/N of the extracted peaks., In this work, we aim at constraining the age of the young open cluster Melotte 20, known as α Per, using seismic indices. The method consists of the following steps: (1) Extract the frequency content of a sample of stars in the field of an open cluster. (2) Search for possible regularities in the frequency spectra of δ Sct stars candidates, using different techniques, such as the Fourier transform, the autocorrelation function, the histogram of frequency differences and the échelle diagram. (3) Constrain the age of the selected stars by both the physical parameters and seismic indices by comparing them with a grid of asteroseismic models representative of δ Sct stars. (4) Find possible common ages between these stars to determine the age of the cluster. We performed the pulsation analysis with MultiModes, a rapid, accurate and powerful open-source code, which is presented in this paper. The result is that the age of α Per could be between 96 and 100 Myr. This is an improvement over different techniques in the past. The Carina Nebula is one of the major massive star-forming regions in the Galaxy. Its relatively nearby distance (2.35 kpc) makes it an ideal laboratory for the study of massive star formation, structure, and evolution, both for individual stars and stellar systems. Thanks to the high-quality spectra provided by the Gaia-ESO survey and the LiLiMaRlin library, as well as Gaia EDR3 astrometry, a detailed and homogeneous spectroscopic characterization of its massive stellar content can be carried out. Aims. Our main objective is to spectroscopically characterize all massive members of the Carina Nebula in the Gaia-ESO survey footprint to provide an updated census of massive stars in the region and an updated estimate of the binary fraction of O stars. Methods. We performed accurate spectral classification using an interactive code that compares spectra with spectral libraries of OB standard stars, as well as line-based classic methods. We calculated membership using our own algorithm based on Gaia EDR3 astrometry. To check the correlation between the spectroscopic n-qualifier and the rotational velocity, we used a semi-automated tool for the line-broadening characterization of OB stars based on a combined Fourier transform and goodness-of-fit methodology. Results. The Gaia-ESO survey sample of massive OB stars in the Carina Nebula consists of 234 stars. The addition of brighter sources from the Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey and additional sources from the literature allows us to create the most complete census of massive OB stars so far in the region. It contains a total of 316 stars, with 18 of them in the background and 4 in the foreground. Of the 294 stellar systems in Car OB1, 74 are of O type, 214 are of nonsupergiant B type, and 6 are of WR or nonO supergiant (II to Ia) spectral class. We identify 20 spectroscopic binary systems with an O-star primary, of which 6 are reported for the first time, and another 18 with a B-star primary, of which 13 are new detections. The average observed double-lined binary fraction of O-type stars in the surveyed region is 0.35, which represents a lower limit. We find a good correlation between the spectroscopic n-qualifier and the projected rotational velocity of the stars. The fraction of candidate runaways among the stars with and without the n-qualifier is 4.4% and 2.4%, respectively, although nonresolved double-lined binaries could be contaminating the sample of fast rotators. © The Authors 2023., This paper is based mainly on data products from spectroscopic observations made with ESO Telescopes at the Paranal Observatory under programme ID 188.B-3002. This process removes excess angular momentum from the star as viscosity facilitates the mass and angular momentum transfer within the disc and its growth. The angular momentum loss rates (AMLR) of Be stars is a subject of debate in the literature. Through the modelling of the disc formation and dissipation phases observed from Be stars, their average AMLR can be determined and this is the goal of this work. We use the viscous decretion disc (VDD) model to provide a range of the average AMLR for Be stars and compare these rates with predicted values from the literature. We explore the reasons for discrepancies between the predicted values of average AMLR, using the VDD and Geneva stellar evolution models that were previously reported in literature and find that the largest differences occur when Be stars are rotating below their critical speeds. We show that the time over which the mass reservoir builds up is inversely proportional to the average AMLR. Also, we determine a revised value of the average AMLR for the Galactic Be star ω CMa of 4.7×1036gcm2s−2⁠, which is in better agreement with the values expected for a typical B2-type star. Finally, the effect of disc truncation due to the presence of a companion star is investigated and we find that this has a minimal effect on the average AMLR. Las tasas de pérdida de momento angular (AMLR) de las estrellas Be son objeto de debate en la literatura. A través de la modelización de las fases de formación y disipación del disco observadas en estrellas Be, se puede determinar su AMLR media y este es el objetivo de este trabajo. Utilizamos el modelo de disco de decrecimiento viscoso (VDD) para proporcionar un rango de la AMLR media de las estrellas Be y comparamos estas tasas con los valores predichos en la literatura. Exploramos las razones de las discrepancias entre los valores predichos de AMLR media, utilizando el modelo VDD y los modelos de evolución estelar de Ginebra de los que se había informado previamente en la literatura, y descubrimos que las mayores diferencias se producen cuando las estrellas Be están rotando por debajo de sus velocidades críticas. Demostramos que el tiempo durante el cual se acumula el depósito de masa es inversamente proporcional a la AMLR media. Magnetic fields can drastically change predictions of evolutionary models of massive stars via mass-loss quenching, magnetic braking, and efficient angular momentum transport, which we aim to quantify in this work. We use the MESA software instrument to compute an extensive main-sequence grid of stellar structure and evolution models, as well as isochrones, accounting for the effects attributed to a surface fossil magnetic field. The grid is densely populated in initial mass (3-60 M$_\odot$), surface equatorial magnetic field strength (0-50 kG), and metallicity (representative of the Solar neighbourhood and the Magellanic Clouds). We use two magnetic braking and two chemical mixing schemes and compare the model predictions for slowly-rotating, nitrogen-enriched ("Group 2") stars with observations in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We quantify a range of initial field strengths that allow for producing Group 2 stars and find that typical values (up to a few kG) lead to solutions. Between the subgrids, we find notable departures in surface abundances and evolutionary paths. In our magnetic models, chemical mixing is always less efficient compared to non-magnetic models due to the rapid spin-down. We identify that quasi-chemically homogeneous main sequence evolution by efficient mixing could be prevented by fossil magnetic fields. We recommend comparing this grid of evolutionary models with spectropolarimetric and spectroscopic observations with the goals of i) revisiting the derived stellar parameters of known magnetic stars, and ii) observationally constraining the uncertain magnetic braking and chemical mixing schemes., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Asteroseismology has opened a window on the internal physics of thousands of stars, by relating oscillation spectra properties to the internal physics of stars. Mode identification, namely the process of associating a measured oscillation frequency to the corresponding mode geometry and properties, is the cornerstone of this analysis of seismic spectra. In rapidly rotating stars this identification is a challenging task that remains incomplete, as modes assume complex geometries and regular patterns in frequencies get scrambled under the influence of the Coriolis force and centrifugal flattening. In this article, I will first discuss the various classes of mode geometries that emerge in rapidly rotating stars and the related frequency and period patterns, as predicted by ray dynamics, complete (non-)adiabatic calculations, or using the traditional approximation of rotation. These patterns scale with structural quantities and help us derive crucial constraints on the structure and evolution of these stars. I will summarize the amazing progress accomplished over the last few years for the deciphering of gravity-mode pulsator oscillation spectra, and recent developments based on machine-learning classification techniques to distinguish oscillation modes and pattern analysis strategies that let us access the underlying physics of pressure-mode pulsators. These approaches pave the way to ensemble asteroseismology of classical pulsators. Finally, I will highlight how these recent progress can be combined to improve forward seismic modelling. I will focus on the example of Rasalhague, a well-known rapid rotator, to illustrate the process and the needed advances to obtain à-la-carte modelling of such stars.

Stellar dynamos generate magnetic fields that are of fundamental importance to the variability and evolution of Sun-like and low-mass stars, and for the development of their planetary systems. As a key to understanding stellar dynamos, empirical relations between stellar parameters and magnetic fields are required for comparison to ab initio predictions from dynamo models. We report measurements of surface-average magnetic fields in 292 M dwarfs from a comparison with radiative transfer calculations; for 260 of them, this is the first measurement of this kind. Our data were obtained from more than 15 000 high-resolution spectra taken during the CARMENES project. They reveal a relation between average field strength, ⟨B⟩, and Rossby number, Ro, resembling the well-studied rotation–activity relation. Among the slowly rotating stars, we find that magnetic flux, ΦB, is proportional to rotation period, P, and among the rapidly rotating stars that average surface fields do not grow significantly beyond the level set by the available kinetic energy. Furthermore, we find close relations between nonthermal coronal X-ray emission, chromospheric Hα and Ca H&K emission, and magnetic flux. Taken together, these relations demonstrate empirically that the rotation–activity relation can be traced back to a dependence of the magnetic dynamo on rotation. We advocate the picture that the magnetic dynamo generates magnetic flux on the stellar surface proportional to rotation rate with a saturation limit set by the available kinetic energy, and we provide relations for average field strengths and nonthermal emission that are independent of the choice of the convective turnover time. We also find that Ca H&K emission saturates at average field strengths of ⟨B⟩≈800 G while Hα and X-ray emission grow further with stronger fields in the more rapidly rotating stars. The evolutionary status of Be-type stars remains unclear, with both single-star and binary pathways having been proposed. Here, VFTS spectroscopy of 73 Be-type stars, in the spectral-type range, B0--B3, is analysed to estimate projected rotational velocities, radial velocities and stellar parameters. They are found to be rotating faster than the corresponding VFTS B-type sample but simulations imply that their projected rotational velocities are inconsistent with them all rotating at near critical velocities. The de-convolution of the projected rotational velocities estimates leads to a mean rotational velocity estimate of 320-350 km/s, approximately 100 km/s larger than that for the corresponding B-type sample. There is a dearth of targets with rotational velocities less than 0.4 of the critical velocity, with a broad distribution reaching up to critical rotation. Our best estimate for the mean or median of the rotational velocitiy is 0.68 of the critical velocity. Rapidly-rotating B-type stars are more numerous than their Be-type counterparts, whilst the observed frequency of Be-type stars identified as binary systems is significantly lower than that for normal B-type stars, consistent with their respective radial-velocity dispersions. The semi-amplitudes for the Be-type binaries are also smaller. Similar results are found for a SMC Be-type sample centred on NGC346 with no significant differences being found between the two samples. These results are compared with the predictions of single and binary stellar evolutionary models for Be-type stars. TZ Fornacis is a double-lined eclipsing binary system with similar masses (2.057 ± 0.001 and 1.958 ± 0.001 M⊙) but characterized by very different radii (8.28 ± 0.22 and 3.94 ± 0.17 R⊙). This similarity in terms of mass makes it possible to study the system’s differential stellar evolution as well as some aspects of its tidal evolution. With regard to its orbital elements, it was recently confirmed that its orbit is circular with an orbital period of 75.7 days. The less massive component rotates about 17 times faster than the primary one, which is synchronized with the mean orbital angular velocity. Our main objective in this work is to study both the nuclear and the tidal evolution of the system. Methods. To model the TZ For system, we used the MESA package, computing the grids using the exact observed masses, radii, and effective temperatures as input, and then varying the metallicity, the core overshooting amount, and the mixing-length parameter. A χ2 statistic was used to infer the optimal values of the core overshooting and the mixing-length parameters. The same procedure was used to generate rotating models with the GRANADA code. The respective errors in the average age of TZ For were less than 5%. On the other hand, the differential equations that govern the tidal evolution were integrated using the fifth-order Runge–Kutta method, ith a tolerance of 1 × 10−7. Results. We explored two scenarios regarding the initial eccentricities: a high one (0.30) and a case of an initial circular orbit. A good agreement has been found between the observational values of the eccentricity, synchronism levels, and orbital period with the values predicted by the integration of the tidal evolution equations. The influence of the friction timescale on the evolution of the orbital elements of TZ For is also studied here. The orbital elements most affected by the uncertainties in the friction timescale are the synchronism levels of the two components. On the other hand, we used the properties of the rotating models generated by the GRANADA code as the initial angular velocities instead of using trial values. In this case, comparisons between the theoretical values of the orbital elements and their observed counterparts also lead to a good interagreement. © A. We present measurements of spot properties on 31 young stellar objects, based on multi-band data from the HOYS (Hunting Outbursting Young Stars) project. On average the analysis for each object is based on 270 data points during 80 days in at least 3 bands. All the young low-mass stars in our sample show periodic photometric variations. We determine spot temperatures and coverage by comparing the measured photometric amplitudes in optical bands with simulated amplitudes based on atmosphere models, including a complete error propagation. 21 objects in our sample feature cool spots, with spot temperatures 500 - 2500 K below the stellar effective temperature ($T_{\rm eff}$), and a coverage of 0.05 - 0.4. Six more have hot spots, with temperatures up to 3000 K above $T_{\rm eff}$ and coverage below 0.15. The remaining four stars have ambiguous solutions or are AA Tau-type contaminants. All of the stars with large spots (i.e. high coverage $>0.1$) are relatively cool with $T_{\rm eff} < 4500$ K, which could be a result of having deeper convection zones. Apart from that, spot properties show no significant trends with rotation period, infrared excess, or stellar properties. Two main scenarios have been proposed for origin of massive runaway stars -- dynamical ejection or release from a binary at the first core collapse -- but their relative contribution remains debated. Using two large spectroscopic campaigns towards massive stars in 30 Doradus, we aim to provide observational constraints on the properties of the O-type runaway population in the most massive active star-forming region in the Local group. We use RV measurements of the O-type star populations in 30 Doradus obtained by the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey and the Tarantula Massive Binary Monitoring to identify single and binary O-type runaways. We discuss their rotational properties and qualitatively compare observations with expectations of ejection scenarios. We identify 23 single and one binary O-type runaway objects, most of them outside the main star-forming regions in 30 Doradus. We find an overabundance of rapid rotators (vsini > 200km/s) among the runaway population, providing an explanation of the overabundance of rapidly rotating stars in the 30 Doradus field. Considerations of the projected rotation rates and runaway line-of-sight (los) velocities reveal a conspicuous absence of rapidly rotating (vsini > 210k/ms), fast moving (v_{los} > 60km/s) runaways, and suggest the presence of two different populations of runaway stars: a population of rapidly-spinning but slowly moving runaways and a population of fast moving but slowly rotating ones. These are detected with a ratio close to 2:1 in our sample. We argue that slowly moving but rapidly spinning runaways result from binary ejections, while rapidly moving but slowly spinning runaways could result from dynamical ejections. A dozen short-period detached binaries are known to host transiting circumbinary planets. In all circumbinary systems so far, the planetary and binary orbits are aligned within a couple of degrees. However, the obliquity of the primary star, which is an important tracer of their formation, evolution, and tidal history, has only been measured in one circumbinary system until now. EBLM J0608-59/TOI-1338 is a low-mass eclipsing binary system with a recently discovered circumbinary planet identified by TESS. Here, we perform high-resolution spectroscopy during primary eclipse to measure the projected stellar obliquity of the primary component. The obliquity is low, and thus the primary star is aligned with the binary and planetary orbits with a projected spin-orbit angle $\beta = 2.8 \pm 17.1$ deg. The rotation period of $18.1 \pm 1.6$ days implied by our measurement of $v\sin{i_\star}$ suggests that the primary has not yet pseudo-synchronized with the binary orbit, but is consistent with gyrochronology and weak tidal interaction with the binary companion. Our result, combined with the known coplanarity of the binary and planet orbits, is suggestive of formation from a single disc. Finally, we considered whether the spectrum of the faint secondary star could affect our measurements. We show through simulations that the effect is negligible for our system, but can lead to strong biases in $v\sin{i_\star}$ and $\beta$ for higher flux ratios. [Context] The measurement of apsidal motion rates in eccentric eclipsing binaries is a unique way to gain insight into the internal structure of stars through the internal density concentration parameter, k2. High-quality physical parameters of the stellar components, together with precise measurements of the advance of the periastron, are needed for the comparison with values derived from models. [Aims] As a product of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, high-precision light curves of a large number of eclipsing binaries are now available. Using a selection of well-studied, double-lined eccentric eclipsing binary systems, we aim to determine their apsidal motion rates and place constraints on the internal density concentration and compare with the predictions from state-of-the-art theoretical models. [Methods] We computed times of minimum light using the TESS light curves of 34 eclipsing binaries with precise absolute parameters. We used the changing difference over time between primary and secondary eclipse timings to determine the apsidal motion rate. To extend the time baseline, we combined the high-precision TESS timings with reliable archival data. On the other hand, for each component of our sample of double-lined eclipsing binaries, we computed grids of evolutionary stellar models for the observed stellar mass exploring ranges of values of the overshooting parameter fov, the mixing-length parameter, and the metallicity. To find the best solution for the two components we adopted a χ2 statistic to infer the optimal values of the overshooting parameter and the mixing-length parameter. The theoretical internal structure constants to be compared with the observed values were calculated by integrating the differential equations of Radau for each stellar model. [Results] We have determined the apsidal motion rate of 27 double-lined eclipsing binaries with precise physical parameters. The obtained values, corrected for their relativistic contribution, yield precise empirical parameters of the internal stellar density concentration. The comparison of these results with the predictions based on new theoretical models shows very good agreement. Studying rotational variability of young stars is enabling us to investigate a multitude of properties of young star-disk systems. We utilise high cadence, multi-wavelength optical time series data from the Hunting Outbursting Young Stars citizen science project to identify periodic variables in the Pelican Nebula (IC5070). A double blind study using nine different period-finding algorithms was conducted and a sample of 59 periodic variables was identified. We find that a combination of four period finding algorithms can achieve a completeness of 85% and a contamination of 30% in identifying periods in inhomogeneous data sets. The best performing methods are periodograms that rely on fitting a sine curve. Utilising GaiaEDR3 data, we have identified an unbiased sample of 40 periodic YSOs, without using any colour or magnitude selections. With a 98.9% probability we can exclude a homogeneous YSO period distribution. Instead we find a bi-modal distribution with peaks at three and eight days. The sample has a disk fraction of 50%, and its statistical properties are in agreement with other similarly aged YSOs populations. In particular, we confirm that the presence of the disk is linked to predominantly slow rotation and find a probability of 4.8$\times$10$^{-3}$ that the observed relation between period and presence of a disk has occurred by chance. During the survey phase of the Kepler mission, several thousands of stars were observed in short cadence, allowing the detection of solar-like oscillations in more than 500 main-sequence and sub-giant stars. Later, the Kepler Science Office discovered an issue in the calibration that affected half of the short-cadence data, leading to a new data release (DR25) with improved corrections. We re-analyze the one-month time series of the Kepler survey phase to search for new solar-like oscillations. We study the seismic parameters of 99 stars (46 targets with new reported solar-like oscillations) increasing by around 8% the known sample of solar-like stars with asteroseismic analysis of the short-cadence data from Kepler. We compute the masses and radii using seismic scaling relations and find that this new sample populates the massive stars (above 1.2Ms and up to 2Ms) and subgiant phase. We determine the granulation parameters and amplitude of the modes, which agree with previously derived scaling relations. The stars studied here are slightly fainter than the previously known sample of main-sequence and subgiants with asteroseismic detections. We also study the surface rotation and magnetic activity levels of those stars. Our sample of has similar levels of activity compared to the previously known sample and in the same range as the Sun between the minimum and maximum of its activity cycle. We find that for 7 stars, a possible blend could be the reason for the previous non detection. We compare the radii obtained from the scaling relations with the Gaia ones and find that the Gaia radii are overestimated by 4.4% on average compared to the seismic radii and a decreasing trend with evolutionary stage. We re-analyze the DR25 of the main-sequence and sub-giant stars with solar-like oscillations previously detected and provide their global seismic parameters for a total of 526 stars., 18 pages, 21 figures. We investigate two topics regarding solar mass FGK-type stars, the lithium rotation connection (LRC) and the existence of the "lithium desert". We determine the minimum critical rotation velocity ($v \sin i$) related with the LRC separating slow from rapid stellar rotators, as being 5 km s$^{-1}$. This value also split different stellar properties. For the first time we explore the behaviour of the LRC for some stellar associations with ages between 45 Myr and 120 Myr. This allows us to study the LRC age dependence at the beginning of the general spin down stage for low mass stars, which starts at $\sim$ 30-40 Myr. We find that each stellar group presents a characteristic minimum lithium (Li) depletion connected to a specific large rotation velocity and that this minimum changes with age. For instance, this minimum changes from $\sim$ 50 km s$^{-1}$ to less than 20 km s$^{-1}$ in 200 Myr. Regarding the lithium desert, it was described as a limited region in the A(Li)-$T_{\rm eff}$ map containing no stars. Using $T_{\rm eff}$ from {\em Gaia} DR2 we detect 30 stars inside and/or near the same box defined originally as the Li desert. Due to their intrinsic $T_{\rm eff}$ errors some of these stars may be inside or outside the box, implying a large probability that the box contains several stars. Mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars are late-B upper main sequence chemically peculiar stars distinguished by large overabundances of heavy elements, slow rotation, and frequent membership in close binary systems. These stars lack strong magnetic fields typical of magnetic Bp stars but occasionally exhibit non-uniform surface distributions of chemical elements. The physical origin and the extent of this spot formation phenomenon remains unknown. Here we use 2-min cadence light curves of 64 HgMn stars observed by the TESS satellite during the first two years of its operation to investigate the incidence of rotational modulation and pulsations among HgMn stars. We found rotational variability with amplitudes of 0.1-3 mmag in 84 per cent of the targets, indicating ubiquitous presence of starspots on HgMn-star surfaces. Rotational period measurements reveal six fast-rotating stars with periods below 1.2 d, including one ultra-fast rotator (HD 14228) with a 0.34 d period. Asteroseismology has been able to provide insights on rotation for the Sun, solar-like stars, and compact objects like white dwarfs. However, this is still very difficult for intermediate-mass stars. These stars are moderate-to-rapid rotators. Rotation splits and shifts the oscillation modes, which makes the oscillation spectrum more complex and harder to interpret. Here we study the oscillation patterns of a sample of benchmark delta Sct stars belonging to eclipsing binary systems with the objective of finding the frequency spacing related to the rotational splitting (delta r). For this task, we combine three techniques: the Fourier transform, the autocorrelation function, and the histogram of frequency differences. The last two showed a similar behaviour. For most of the stars, it was necessary to determine the large separation (Delta nu) prior to spot delta r. This is the first time we may clearly state that one of the periodicities present in the p modes oscillation spectra of delta Sct stars corresponds to the rotational splitting. This is true independent of the stellar rotation rate. $\tau$ Sco, a well-studied magnetic B-type star in the Upper Sco association, has a number of surprising characteristics. It rotates very slowly and shows nitrogen excess. Its surface magnetic field is much more complex than a purely dipolar configuration which is unusual for a magnetic massive star. We employ the CMFGEN radiative transfer code to determine the fundamental parameters and surface CNO and helium abundances. Then, we employ MESA and GENEC stellar evolution models accounting for the effects of surface magnetic fields. To reconcile $\tau$ Sco's properties with single-star models, an increase is necessary in the efficiency of rotational mixing by a factor of 3 to 10 and in the efficiency of magnetic braking by a factor of 10. The spin down could be explained by assuming a magnetic field decay scenario. However, the simultaneous chemical enrichment challenges the single-star scenario. Previous works indeed suggested a stellar merger origin for $\tau$ Sco. However, the merger scenario also faces similar challenges as our magnetic single-star models to explain $\tau$ Sco's simultaneous slow rotation and nitrogen excess. In conclusion, the single-star channel seems less likely and versatile to explain these discrepancies, while the merger scenario and other potential binary-evolution channels still require further assessment as to whether they may self-consistently explain the observables of $\tau$ Sco., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. The Kepler and TESS missions delivered high-precision, long-duration photometric time series for hundreds of main-sequence stars with gravito-inertial (g) pulsation modes. This high precision allows us to evaluate increasingly detailed theoretical stellar models. Recent theoretical work extended the traditional approximation of rotation (TAR), a framework to evaluate the effect of the Coriolis acceleration on g-modes, to include the effects of the centrifugal acceleration in the approximation of slightly deformed stars, which so far had mostly been neglected in asteroseismology. This extension of the TAR was conceived by rederiving the TAR in a centrifugally deformed, spheroidal coordinate system. We explore the effect of the centrifugal acceleration on g modes and assess its detectability in space-based photometry. We implement the new framework to calculate the centrifugal deformation of precomputed 1D spherical stellar structure models and compute the corresponding g-mode frequencies, assuming uniform rotation. The framework is evaluated for a grid of stellar structure models covering a relevant parameter space for observed g-mode pulsators. The centrifugal acceleration modifies the effect of the Coriolis acceleration on g modes, narrowing the equatorial band in which they are trapped. Furthermore, the centrifugal acceleration causes the pulsation periods and period spacings of the most common g modes (prograde dipole modes and r modes) to increase with values similar to the observational uncertainties in Kepler and TESS data. The effect of the centrifugal acceleration on g~modes is formally detectable in modern space photometry. Implementation of the new theoretical framework in stellar structure and pulsation codes will allow for more precise asteroseismic modelling of centrifugally deformed stars, to assess its effect on mode excitation, -trapping and -damping., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, 1 table. Active M dwarfs frequently exhibit large flares, which can pose an existential threat to the habitability of any planet in orbit in addition to making said planets more difficult to detect. M dwarfs do not lose angular momentum as easily as earlier-type stars, which maintain the high levels of stellar activity for far longer. Studying young, fast-rotating M dwarfs is key to understanding their near stellar environment and the evolution of activity. Aims. We study stellar activity on the fast-rotating M dwarf GJ 3270. Methods. We analyzed dedicated high cadence, simultaneous, photometric and high-resolution spectroscopic observations obtained with CARMENES of GJ 3270 over 7.7 h, covering a total of eight flares of which two are strong enough to facilitate a detailed analysis. We consult the TESS data, obtained in the month prior to our own observations, to study rotational modulation and to compare the TESS flares to those observed in our campaign. Results. The TESS data exhibit rotational modulation with a period of 0.37 d. The strongest flare covered by our observing campaign released a total energy of about 3.6 × 1032 erg, putting it close to the superflare regime. This flare is visible in the B,V, r, i, and z photometric bands, which allows us to determine a peak temperature of about 10 000 K. The flare also leaves clear marks in the spectral time series. In particular, we observe an evolving, mainly blue asymmetry in chromospheric lines, which we attribute to a post-flare, corotating feature. To our knowledge this is the first time such a feature has been seen on a star other than our Sun. Conclusions. Our photometric and spectroscopic time series covers the eruption of a strong flare followed up by a corotating feature analogous to a post-flare arcadal loop on the Sun with a possible failed ejection of material. © E.N. We report the discovery and characterisation of WASP-180Ab, a hot Jupiter confirmed by the detection of its Doppler shadow and by measuring its mass using radial velocities. We find the 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1 $M_{\rm Jup}$, 1.24 $\pm$ 0.04 $R_{\rm Jup}$ planet to be in a misaligned, retrograde orbit around an F7 star with $T_{\rm eff}$ = 6500K and a moderate rotation speed of vsini = 19.9 km s$^{-1}$. The host star is the primary of a $V$ = 10.7 binary, where a secondary separated by 5$''$ ($\sim$1200 AU) contributes $\sim$30% of the light. WASP-180Ab therefore adds to a small sample of transiting hot Jupiters known in binary systems. In $\gamma$ Doradus stars, the g-mode period spacing shows an approximately linear relation with period. The slope is a new asteroseismic diagnostic, related to the rotation rate and the azimuthal order $m$. We report two automated methods, the `moving-window Fourier transform' and the `cross-correlation', to detect and measure the period spacings based on four-year light curves from the \textit{Kepler} satellite. The results show that the cross-correlation method performs better at detecting the period spacings and their slopes. In this paper, we apply our method to 22 $\gamma$ Dor stars with g-mode multiplets split by rotation. The rotation periods are similar to the g-mode period spacings, causing the multiplets to overlap. To clarify the overlapping patterns, we use the \'echelle diagram and introduce a `copy-shift' diagram to discern and measure the splittings. The first observational relation between slopes and splittings is shown. The slope deviates from zero when the splitting increases, as the theory predicts. The relation of period spacing ($\Delta P$) versus period ($P$) of dipole prograde g modes is known to be useful to measure rotation rates in the g-mode cavity of rapidly rotating $\gamma$ Dor and slowly pulsating B (SPB) stars. In a rapidly rotating star, an inertial mode in the convective core can resonantly couple with g modes propagative in the surrounding radiative region. The resonant coupling causes a dip in the $P$-$\Delta P$ relation, distinct from the modulations due to the chemical composition gradient. Such a resonance dip in $\Delta P$ of prograde dipole g modes appears around a frequency corresponding to a spin parameter $2f_{\rm rot}{\rm(cc)}/\nu_{\rm co-rot} \sim 8-11$ with $f_{\rm rot}$(cc) being the rotation frequency of the convective core and $\nu_{\rm co-rot}$ the pulsation frequency in the co-rotating frame. The spin parameter at the resonance depends somewhat on the extent of core overshooting, central hydrogen abundance, and other stellar parameters. We can fit the period at the observed dip with the prediction from prograde dipole g modes of a main-sequence model, allowing the convective core to rotate differentially from the surrounding g-mode cavity. We have performed such fittings for 16 selected $\gamma$ Dor stars having well defined dips, and found that the majority of $\gamma$ Dor stars we studied rotate nearly uniformly, while convective cores tend to rotate slightly faster than the g-mode cavity in less evolved stars., Comment: 21 pages, 28 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In order to understand stellar evolution, it is crucial to efficiently determine stellar surface rotation periods. An efficient tool to automatically determine reliable rotation periods is needed when dealing with large samples of stellar photometric datasets. The objective of this work is to develop such a tool. Random forest learning abilities are exploited to automate the extraction of rotation periods in Kepler light curves. Rotation periods and complementary parameters are obtained from three different methods: a wavelet analysis, the autocorrelation function of the light curve, and the composite spectrum. We train three different classifiers: one to detect if rotational modulations are present in the light curve, one to flag close binary or classical pulsators candidates that can bias our rotation period determination, and finally one classifier to provide the final rotation period. We test our machine learning pipeline on 23,431 stars of the Kepler K and M dwarf reference rotation catalog of Santos et al. (2019) for which 60% of the stars have been visually inspected. For the sample of 21,707 stars where all the input parameters are provided to the algorithm, 94.2% of them are correctly classified (as rotating or not). Among the stars that have a rotation period in the reference catalog, the machine learning provides a period that agrees within 10% of the reference value for 95.3% of the stars. Moreover, the yield of correct rotation periods is raised to 99.5% after visually inspecting 25.2% of the stars. Over the two main analysis steps, rotation classification and period selection, the pipeline yields a global agreement with the reference values of 92.1% and 96.9% before and after visual inspection. Aims: We aim to study the spot evolution and differential rotation in the magnetically active cool K-type giant star sigma Gem from broadband photometry and continuous spectroscopic observations that span 150 nights. Methods: We use high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra obtained with the Hertzsprung SONG telescope to reconstruct surface (photospheric) temperature maps with Doppler imaging techniques. The 303 observations span 150 nights and allow for a detailed analysis of the spot evolution and surface differential rotation. The Doppler imaging results are compared to simultaneous broadband photometry from the Tennessee State University T3 0.4 m Automated Photometric Telescope. The activity from the stellar chromosphere, which is higher in the stellar atmosphere, is also studied using SONG observations of Balmer H alpha line profiles and correlated with the photospheric activity. Results: The temperature maps obtained during eight consecutive stellar rotations show mainly high-latitude or polar spots, with the main spot concentrations above latitude 45 deg. The spots concentrate around phase 0.25 near the beginning of our observations and around phase 0.75 towards the end. The photometric observations confirm a small jump in spot phases that occurred in February 2016. The cross-correlation of the temperature maps reveals rather strong solar-like differential rotation, giving a relative surface differential rotation coefficient of $\alpha$ = 0.10 +/- 0.02. The discovery of the moderate differential rotation between the core and the envelope of evolved solar-like stars could be the signature of a strong magnetic field trapped inside the radiative interior. The population of intermediate-mass red giants presenting a surprisingly low-amplitude of their mixed modes could also arise from the effect of an internal magnetic field. Indeed, stars more massive than about 1.1Ms are known to develop a convective core during their main sequence, which could relax into a strong fossil magnetic field trapped inside the core of the star for the rest of its evolution. The observations of mixed modes can constitute an excellent probe of the deepest layers of evolved solar-like stars. The magnetic perturbation on mixed modes may thus be visible in asteroseismic data. To unravel which constraints can be obtained from observations, we theoretically investigate the effects of a plausible mixed axisymmetric magnetic field with various amplitudes on the mixed-mode frequencies of evolved solar-like stars. The first-order frequency perturbations are computed for dipolar and quadrupolar mixed modes. These computations are carried out for a range of stellar ages, masses, and metallicities. We show that typical fossil-field strengths of 0.1-1 MG, consistent with the presence of a dynamo in the convective core during the main sequence, provoke significant asymmetries on mixed-mode frequency multiplets during the red-giant branch. We show that these signatures may be detectable in asteroseismic data for field amplitudes small enough for the amplitude of the modes not to be affected by the conversion of gravity into Alfven waves inside the magnetised interior. Finally, we infer an upper limit for the strength of the field, and the associated lower limit for the timescale of its action, to redistribute angular momentum in stellar interiors., 30 pages, 19 figures, Submitted to A&A, Revised version

Recent studies show that the chemical evolution of Sr and Ba in the Galaxy can be explained if different production sites, hosting r- and s-processes, are taken into account. However, the question of unambiguously identifying these sites is still unsolved. Massive stars are shown to play an important role in the production of s-material if rotation is considered. In this work, we study in detail the contribution of rotating massive stars to the production of Sr and Ba, in order to explain their chemical evolution, but also to constrain the rotational behaviour of massive stars. A stochastic chemical evolution model was employed to reproduce the enrichment of the Galactic halo. We developed new methods for model-data comparison which help to objectively compare the stochastic results to the observations. We employed these methods to estimate the value of free parameters which describe the rotation of massive stars, assumed to be dependent on the stellar metallicity. We constrain the parameters using the observations for Sr and Ba. Employing these parameters for rotating massive stars in our stochastic model, we are able to correctly reproduce the chemical evolution of Sr and Ba, but also Y, Zr and La. The data supports a decrease of both the mean rotational velocities and their dispersion with increasing metallicity. Our results show that a metallicity-dependent rotation is a necessary assumption to explain the s-process in massive stars. Context. Stellar activity poses one of the main obstacles for the detection and characterisation of small exoplanets around cool stars, as it can induce radial velocity (RV) signals that can hide or mimic the presence of planetary companions. Several indicators of stellar activity are routinely used to identify activity-related signals in RVs, but not all indicators trace exactly the same activity effects, nor are any of them always effective in all stars. Aims. We evaluate the performance of a set of spectroscopic activity indicators for M dwarf stars with different masses and activity levels with the aim of finding a relation between the indicators and stellar properties. Methods. In a sample of 98 M dwarfs observed with CARMENES, we analyse the temporal behaviour of RVs and nine spectroscopic activity indicators: cross-correlation function (CCF) full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM), CCF contrast, CCF bisector inverse slope (BIS), RV chromatic index (CRX), differential line width (dLW), and indices of the chromospheric lines Hα and calcium infrared triplet. Results. A total of 56 stars of the initial sample show periodic signals related to activity in at least one of these ten parameters. RV is the parameter for which most of the targets show an activity-related signal. CRX and BIS are effective activity tracers for the most active stars in the sample, especially stars with a relatively high mass, while for less active stars, chromospheric lines perform best. FWHM and dLW show a similar behaviour in all mass and activity regimes, with the highest number of activity detections in the low-mass, high-activity regime. Most of the targets for which we cannot identify any activity-related signals are stars at the low-mass end of the sample (i.e. with the latest spectral types). These low-mass stars also show the lowest RV scatter, which indicates that ultracool M dwarfs could be better candidates for planet searches than earlier types, which show larger RV jitter. Conclusions. Our results show that the spectroscopic activity indicators analysed behave differently, depending on the mass and activity level of the target star. This underlines the importance of considering different indicators of stellar activity when studying the variability of RV measurements. We present TOI-1259Ab, a 1.0 Rjup gas giant planet transiting a 0.71 Rsun K-dwarf on a 3.48 day orbit. The system also contains a bound white dwarf companion TOI-1259B with a projected distance of approximately 1600 AU from the planet host. Transits are observed in nine TESS sector and are 2.7 per cent deep - among the deepest known - making TOI-1259Ab a promising target for atmospheric characterization. Our follow-up radial velocity measurements indicate a variability of semiamplitude K = 71 m/s, implying a planet mass of 0.44 Mjup. By fitting the spectral energy distribution of the white dwarf we derive a total age of 4.08 (+1.21 -0.53) Gyr for the system. The K-dwarf's light curve reveals a rotational variability with a period of 28 days, which implies a gyrochronology age broadly consistent with the white dwarf's total age., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. Large surveys with new-generation high-contrast imaging instruments are needed to derive the frequency and properties of exoplanet populations with separations from ~5 to 300 au. A careful assessment of the stellar properties is crucial for a proper understanding of when, where, and how frequently planets form, and how they evolve. The sensitivity of detection limits to stellar age makes this a key parameter for direct imaging surveys. Aims. We describe the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanets (SHINE), the largest direct imaging planet-search campaign initiated at the VLT in 2015 in the context of the SPHERE Guaranteed Time Observations of the SPHERE consortium. In this first paper we present the selection and the properties of the complete sample of stars surveyed with SHINE, focusing on the targets observed during the first phase of the survey (from February 2015 to February 2017). This early sample composed of 150 stars is used to perform a preliminary statistical analysis of the SHINE data, deferred to two companion papers presenting the survey performance, main discoveries, and the preliminary statistical constraints set by SHINE. Methods. Based on a large database collecting the stellar properties of all young nearby stars in the solar vicinity (including kinematics, membership to moving groups, isochrones, lithium abundance, rotation, and activity), we selected the original sample of 800 stars that were ranked in order of priority according to their sensitivity for planet detection in direct imaging with SPHERE. The properties of the stars that are part of the early statistical sample wererevisited, including for instance measurements from the Gaia Data Release 2. Rotation periods were derived for the vast majority of the late-type objects exploiting TESS light curves and dedicated photometric observations. Results. A unique type of oscillation modes has recently been identified in gamma Doradus variables. These low-frequency modes are called Rossby modes (or r modes) because they consist of Rossby waves in each spherical layer. These waves are characterised by toroidal motions that are restored by the latitudinal variation in the Coriolis force. The horizontal oscillations are weakly coupled in the radial direction. We show that these modes can be used to probe the interior of the stars. The method of thenu - root Delta nunu -Deltanudiagram, which has originally been developed to analyse another type of modes, Kelvin g-modes (or prograde sectoral g-modes), is extended to take Rossby modes into account. We first show based on a theoretical model and then on two stars, KIC 3240967 and KIC 12066947, that the method can be adapted to Rossby modes straightforwardly. In addition, we demonstrate that simultaneous analysis of Kelvin and Rossby modes results in (1) smaller uncertainties in the internal rotation rate and the characteristic period of gravity modes, and (2) a substantial reduction of the correlation between the estimates of the two parameters.

We systematically searched for gravity- and Rossby-mode period spacing patterns in Kepler eclipsing binaries with $\gamma$ Doradus pulsators. These stars provide an excellent opportunity to test the theory of tidal synchronisation and angular momentum transport in F- and A-type stars. We discovered 35 systems that show clear patterns, including the spectroscopic binary KIC 10080943. Combined with 45 non-eclipsing binaries with $\gamma$ Dor components that have been found using pulsation timing, we measured their near-core rotation rates and asymptotic period spacings. We find that many stars are tidally locked if the orbital periods are shorter than 10 days, in which the near-core rotation periods given by the traditional approximation of rotation (TAR) are consistent with the orbital period. Compared to the single stars, $\gamma$ Dor stars in binaries tend to have slower near-core rotation rates, likely a consequence of tidal spin-down. We also find three stars that have extremely slow near-core rotation rates. To explain these, we hypothesise that unstable tidally excited oscillations can transfer angular momentum from the star to the orbit, and slow the star below synchronism, a process we refer to as `inverse tides'., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Massive stars are important metal factories in the Universe. They have short and energetic lives, and many of them inevitably explode as a supernova and become a neutron star or black hole. In turn, the formation, evolution and explosive deaths of massive stars impact the surrounding interstellar medium and shape the evolution of their host galaxies. Yet the chemical and dynamical evolution of a massive star, including the chemical yield of the ultimate supernova and the remnant mass of the compact object, strongly depend on the interior physics of the progenitor star. We currently lack empirically calibrated prescriptions for various physical processes at work within massive stars, but this is now being remedied by asteroseismology. The study of stellar structure and evolution using stellar oscillations - asteroseismology - has undergone a revolution in the last two decades thanks to high-precision time series photometry from space telescopes. In particular, the long-term light curves provided by the MOST, CoRoT, BRITE, Kepler/K2 and TESS missions provided invaluable data sets in terms of photometric precision, duration and frequency resolution to successfully apply asteroseismology to massive stars and probe their interior physics. The observation and subsequent modelling of stellar pulsations in massive stars has revealed key missing ingredients in stellar structure and evolution models of these stars. Thus asteroseismology has opened a new window into calibrating stellar physics within a highly degenerate part of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. In this review, I provide a historical overview of the progress made using ground-based and early space missions, and discuss more recent advances and breakthroughs in our understanding of massive star interiors by means of asteroseismology with modern space telescopes., Comment: 46 pages, 6 figures. [Context] The method of gyrochronology relates the age of its star to its rotation period. However, recent evidence of deviations from gyrochronology relations has been reported in the literature., [Aims] We study the influence of tidal interaction between a star and its companion on the rotation velocity of the star to explain peculiar stellar rotation velocities., [Methods] We followed the interaction of a star and its planet using a comprehensive numerical framework that combines tidal friction, magnetic braking, planet migration, and detailed stellar evolution models from the GARSTEC grid. We focus on close-in companions from 1 to 20 MJup orbiting low-mass (0.8 − 1 M⊙) main-sequence stars with a broad metallicity of [Fe/H] = − 1 up to solar., [Results] Our simulations suggest that the dynamical interaction between a star and its companion can have different outcomes that depend on the initial semi-major axis and the mass of the planet, as well as on the mass and metallicity of its host star. In most cases, especially in the case of planet engulfment, we find a catastrophic increase in stellar rotation velocity from 1 kms−1 to over 40 kms−1 while the star is still on the main-sequence. The main prediction of our model is that low-mass main-sequence stars with abnormal rotation velocities should be more common at low-metallicity, as lower [Fe/H] favours faster planet engulfment, based on the assumption that the occurrence rate of close-in massive planets is similar at all metallicities., [Conclusions] Our scenario explains peculiar rotation velocities of low-mass main-sequence stars by the tidal interaction between the star and its companion. Studies of the rotation-activity relation of late-type stars are essential to enhance our understanding of stellar dynamos and angular momentum evolution. We study the rotation-activity relation with K2 for M dwarfs where it is especially poorly understood. We analyzed the light curves of all bright and nearby M dwarfs form the Superblink proper motion catalog that were in the K2 field of view. For a sample of 430 M dwarfs observed in campaigns C0-C19 in long cadence mode we determined the rotation period and a wealth of activity diagnostics. Our study of the rotation-activity relation based on photometric activity indicators confirmed the previously published abrupt change of the activity level at a rotation period of ~10d. A correction has been published: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Volume 502, Issue 4, April 2021, Page 5471, https://doi.org/10.1093/mnras/stab418, The large separation in the low-radial order regime is considered as a highly valuable observable to derive mean densities of delta Scuti stars, due to its independence with rotation. Up to now, theoretical studies of this Delta nu-(rho) over bar relation have been limited to 1D non-rotating models and 2D pseudo-evolutionary models. The present work aims at completing this scenario by investigating quantitatively the impact of rotation in this relation on a large grid of 1D asteroseismic models representative of delta Scuti stars. These include rotation effects on both the stellar evolution and the interaction with pulsation. This allowed us to compute the stellar deformation, get the polar and equatorial radii, and correct the stellar mean densities. We found that the new Delta nu-(rho) over bar relation for rotating models is compatible with previous works. We explained the dispersion of the points around the linear fits as caused mainly by the distribution of the stellar mass, and partially by the evolutionary stage. The new fit is found to be close to the previous theoretical studies for lower masses (1.3-1.81M(circle dot)). However, the opposite holds for the observations: For the higher masses (1.81-3M(circle dot)), the fit is more compatible with the empirical relation. To avoid such discrepancies, we provided new limits to the fit that encompass any possible dependence on mass. We applied these results to characterize the two well-known delta Scuti stars observed by CoRoT, HD174936 and HD174966, and compared the physical parameters with those of previous works. The inclusion of rotation in the modelling causes a tendency towards greater masses, radii, and luminosities, and lower density values. Comparison between Delta nu and Gaia's luminosities also allowed us to constrain the inclination angles and rotational velocities of both stars. In the frame of a study of the empirical isochrones of young stellar clusters, we have carried out BVIc Johnson-Cousins photometry of a sample of K and M stars of the Coma Berenices star cluster. All these stars have known rotational periods. Our main goal is to get a valuable reference on the colour-magnitude diagram, M-v versus B - V, for stars with ages within 400-800 Myr. For this purpose, we obtained BVIc photometry with an average upper limit for the precision of about 0.025 mag and used parallaxes from the Gaia Data Release 2. We found that one-third of our sample is located well above the cluster main sequence and these stars are confirmed as background giants by their radial velocities in the Gaia Data Release 2. This misclassification shows that giants with short-surface rotational periods can mimic main-sequence stars if they are located at the appropriate distance. We recommend caution when using rotational periods in order to determine cluster membership. Besides, the gyrochronology technique should be used only when the luminosity class of the stars is well known. Stellar interiors are the seat of efficient transport of angular momentum all along their evolution. Understanding the dependence of the turbulent transport triggered by the shear instabilities due to the differential rotation in stellar radiation zones is mandatory. Indeed, it constitutes one of the cornerstones of the rotational transport and mixing theory which is implemented in stellar evolution codes to predict the rotational and chemical evolutions of stars. We investigate horizontal shear instabilities in stellar radiation zones by considering the full Coriolis acceleration with both the dimensionless horizontal component $\tilde{f}$ and the vertical component $f$. We performed a linear stability analysis for a horizontal shear flow with a hyperbolic tangent profile, both numerically and asymptotically using the WKBJ approximation. As in the traditional approximation, we identified the inflectional and inertial instabilities. The inflectional instability is destabilized as $\tilde{f}$ increases and its maximum growth rate increases significantly, while the thermal diffusivity stabilizes the inflectional instability similarly to the traditional case. We present a sample of 14 M dwarf stars observed with XMM-Newton and Chandra, for which we also computed rotational periods from Kepler Two-Wheel (K2) Mission light curves. We compiled X-ray and rotation data from the literature and homogenized all data sets to provide the largest uniform sample of M dwarfs (302 stars) for X-ray activity and rotation studies to date. We then fit the relation between $L_{\rm x} - P_{\rm rot}$ using three different mass bins to separate partially and fully convective stars. We found a steeper slope in the unsaturated regime for fully convective stars and a nonconstant $L_{\rm x}$ level in the saturated regime for all masses. In the $L_{\rm x}/L_{\rm bol}-R_{\rm O}$ space we discovered a remarkable double gap that might be related to a discontinuous period evolution. Then we combined the evolution of $P_{\rm rot}$ predicted by angular momentum evolution models with our new results on the empirical $L_{\rm x} - P_{\rm rot}$ relation to provide an estimate for the age decay of X-ray luminosity. We compare predictions of this relationship with the actual X-ray luminosities of M stars with known ages from 100 Myr to a few billion years. We find remarkably good agreement between the predicted $L_{\rm x}$ and the observed values for partially convective stars. However, for fully convective stars at ages of a few billion years, the constructed $L_{\rm x}-$age relation overpredicts the X-ray luminosity because the angular momentum evolution model underpredicts the rotation period of these stars. Finally, we examine the effect of different parameterizations for the Rossby number ($R_{\rm O}$) on the shape of the activity-rotation relation in $L_{\rm x}/L_{\rm bol}-R_{\rm O}$ space, and we find that the slope in the unsaturated regime and the location of the break point of the dual power-law depend sensitively on the choice of $R_{\rm O}$., Accepted for publication by A&A

Context. Self-gravitational rotating bodies do not have spherically symmetric geometries. The study of physical events appearing in fast-spinning compact stars and accretion disks, for example those due to localized thermonuclear ignitions in white dwarfs or to the role played by hydrodynamic instabilities in stars and disks, often requires 3D simulations. When the numerical simulations are carried out with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique a critical point arises as to how to build a stable initial model with rotation because there is no well-established method for that purpose. Aims. We want to provide a portable, easy-to-implement methodology for SPH simulations to procedurally generate physically sound, stable initial conditions for rotating bodies. Methods. We explain and validate an easy and versatile novel relaxation method to obtain 3D equilibrium configurations of rotating bodies with SPH. As detailed below, this method is able to relax barotropic, P(ρ), structures either in rigid or differential rotation. The relaxation procedure strongly relies on the excellent conservation of angular momentum that characterizes the SPH technique. Results. We applied our proposal to obtain stable rotating structures of single white dwarfs, compact binaries harboring two white dwarfs, high-density stars approached as polytropes and accretion disks either in rigid or differential rotation. Conclusions. We present a novel relaxation method to build 3D rotating structures of barotropic bodies using the SPH technique. The method has been successfully applied to a variety of zero-temperature white dwarfs and polytropic self-gravitating structures. Our SPH results have been validated by comparing the main features (energies, central densities, and the polar-to-equatorial radius ratio) to those obtained with independent grid-based methods, for example, the self-consistent field method, showing that both methods agree within a few percent.

In this paper, we present results from the spectropolarimetric follow-up of photometrically selected candidate magnetic B stars from the MOBSTER project. Out of four observed targets, one (HD 38170) is found to host a detectable surface magnetic field, with a maximum longitudinal field measurement of 105$\pm$14 G. This star is chemically peculiar and classified as an $\alpha^2$ CVn variable. Its detection validates the use of TESS to perform a photometric selection of magnetic candidates. Furthermore, upper limits on the strength of a putative dipolar magnetic field are derived for the remaining three stars, and we report the discovery of a previously unknown spectroscopic binary system, HD 25709. Finally, we use our non-detections as case studies to further inform the criteria to be used for the selection of a larger sample of stars to be followed up using high-resolution spectropolarimetry., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, accepted by MNRAS (2021 March 23)

Comparing solar and stellar brightness variations is hampered by the difference in spectral passbands used in observations as well as by the possible difference in the inclination of their rotation axes from the line of sight. We calculate the rotational variability of the Sun as it would be measured in passbands used for stellar observations. In particular, we consider the filter systems used by the CoRoT, $Kepler$, TESS, and $Gaia$ space missions. We also quantify the effect of the inclination of the rotation axis on the solar rotational variability. We employ the Spectral And Total Irradiance REconstructions (SATIRE) model to calculate solar brightness variations in different filter systems as observed from the ecliptic plane. We then combine the simulations of the surface distribution of the magnetic features at different inclinations using a surface flux transport model (SFTM) with the SATIRE calculations to compute the dependence of the variability on the inclination. For an ecliptic-bound observer, the amplitude of the solar rotational variability, as observed in the total solar irradiance (TSI) is 0.68 mmag (averaged over solar cycles 21-24). We obtained corresponding amplitudes in the $Kepler$ (0.74 mmag), CoRoT (0.73 mmag), TESS (0.62 mmag), $Gaia~ $ (0.74 mmag), $Gaia~ G_{RP}$ (0.62 mmag), and ), $Gaia~ G_{BP}$ (0.86 mmag) passbands. Decreasing the inclination of the rotation axis decreases the rotational variability. For a sample of randomly inclined stars, the variability is on average 15% lower in all filter systems considered in this work. This almost compensates for the difference in the amplitudes of the variability in TSI and $Kepler$ passbands, making the amplitudes derived from the TSI records an ideal representation of the solar rotational variability for comparison to $Kepler$ stars with unknown inclinations., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Rotation period measurements of stars observed with the Kepler mission have revealed a lack of stars at intermediate rotation periods, accompanied by a decrease of photometric variability. Whether this so-called dearth region is a peculiarity of stars in the Kepler field, or reflects a general manifestation of stellar magnetic activity, is still under debate. Our goal is to measure stellar rotation periods and photometric variabilities for tens of thousands of K2 stars, located in different fields along the ecliptic plane, to shed light on the relation between stellar rotation and photometric variability. We use Lomb-Scargle periodograms, auto-correlation and wavelet functions to determine consistent rotation periods. Stellar brightness variability is assessed by computing the variability range from the light curve. We further apply Gaussian mixture models to search for bimodality in the rotation period distribution. Combining measurements from all K2 campaigns, we detect rotation periods in 29,860 stars. For effective temperatures below 6000K, the variability range shows a local minimum at different periods, consistent with an isochrone age of 750 Myr. Additionally, the K2 rotation period distribution shows evidence for bimodality, although the dearth region is less pronounced compared to the Kepler field. The period at the dip of the bimodal distribution shows good agreement with the period at the local variability minimum. We conclude that the period bimodality is present in different fields of the sky, and is hence a general manifestation of stellar magnetic activity. The reduced variability in the dearth region is interpreted as a cancelation between dark spots and bright faculae. Our results strongly advocate that the role of faculae has been underestimated so far, suggesting a more complex dependence of the brightness variability on the rotation period., 14 pages, 13+3 figures

We report our survey of γ Dor stars from the 4-yr Kepler mission. These stars pulsate mainly in g modes and r modes, showing period-spacing patterns in the amplitude spectra. The period-spacing patterns are sensitive to the chemical composition gradients and the near-core rotation, hence they are essential for understanding the stellar interior. We identified period-spacing patterns in 611 γ Dor stars. Almost every star pulsates in dipole g modes, while about 30% of stars also show clear patterns for quadrupole g modes and 16% of stars present r mode patterns. We measure periods, period spacings, and the gradient of the period spacings. These three observables guide the mode identifications and can be used to estimate the near-core rotation rate. We find many stars are hotter and show longer period-spacing patterns than theory. Using the Traditional Approximation of Rotation (TAR), we inferred the asymptotic spacings, the near-core rotation rates, and the radial orders of the g and r modes. Most stars have a near-core rotation rate around 1 d−1and an asymptotic spacing around 4000 s. We also find that many stars rotate more slowly than predicted by theory for unclear reasons. 11 stars show rotational splittings with fast rotation rates. We compared the observed slope–rotation relation with the theory and find a large spread. We detected rotational modulations in 58 stars and used them to derive the core-to-surface rotation ratios. The interiors rotate faster than the cores in most stars, but by no more than 5%.

Context. Massive stars are predicted to excite internal gravity waves (IGWs) by turbulent core convection and from turbulent pressure fluctuations in their near-surface layers. These IGWs are extremely efficient at transporting angular momentum and chemical species within stellar interiors, but they remain largely unconstrained observationally. Aims. We aim to characterise the photometric detection of IGWs across a large number of O and early-B stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, and explain the ubiquitous detection of stochastic variability in the photospheres of massive stars. Methods. We combined high-precision time-series photometry from the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite with high-resolution ground-based spectroscopy of 70 stars with spectral types O and B to probe the relationship between the photometric signatures of IGWs and parameters such as spectroscopic mass, luminosity, and macroturbulence. Results. A relationship is found between the location of a star in the spectroscopic Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and the amplitudes and frequencies of stochastic photometric variability in the light curves of massive stars. Furthermore, the properties of the stochastic variability are statistically correlated with macroturbulent velocity broadening in the spectral lines of massive stars. Conclusions. The common ensemble morphology for the stochastic low-frequency variability detected in space photometry and its relationship to macroturbulence is strong evidence for IGWs in massive stars, since these types of waves are unique in providing the dominant tangential velocity field required to explain the observed spectroscopy., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 10 pages and 5 figures (and an additional 7 pages of appendix tables and figures). We present the results of a timing analysis undertaken with the goal of obtaining an improved mass measurement of the recycled pulsar J2045+3633. Using regular high-cadence observations with the Effelsberg, Nan\c{c}ay, and Lovell radio telescopes, together with targeted campaigns with the Arecibo Telescope and Effelsberg, we have assembled a 6-yr timing data set for this pulsar. We measure highly significant values for the proper motion and the related rate of change of orbital semi-major axis ($\dot{x}$), and have obtained high precision values of the rate of advance of periastron time ($\dot{\omega}$), and two of the Shapiro delay parameters ($h_{3}$ and $\varsigma$). This has allowed us to improve the measurements of the pulsar and companion masses by an order of magnitude, yielding (with $1\sigma$ uncertainties) $1.251^{+0.021}_{-0.021}\,\text{M}_{\odot}$ for PSR J2045+3633, and $0.873^{+0.016}_{-0.014}\,\text{M}_{\odot}$ for its white dwarf companion, and has allowed us to place improved constraints on the geometrical orientation of the binary system. Pulsating variables of γ Doradus type (γ Dor) and slowly pulsating B-type (SPB) stars are found on and near the main sequence with typical periods varying between one and several days, making them rather hard to detect from the ground. It is only with space missions such as CoRoT and Kepler that we became truly capable of determining their oscillation frequencies with enough precision to perform in-depth analyses. Here we present an efficient and easy-to-implement seismic tool, in which the frequency (ν) and the square root of the frequency difference ($ \sqrt{\Delta \nu} $) are plotted against each other as the abscissa and the ordinate, respectively. This allows us to immediately (1) perform mode identification; (2) estimate the average rotation rate and the characteristic period of gravity modes; and (3) recognise certain physical effects, including buoyancy glitches and avoided crossings. This diagnostic tool can only be applied to prograde sectoral g modes. To validate the tool presented here, we used stellar models and also applied it to three γ Dor (KIC 12066947, KIC 5608334 and KIC 4846809) and one SPB star (KIC 3459297), all observed with Kepler. Furthermore, we show that the rotation rates determined using this new tool are consistent with the results of previous studies.
